Dive Bar in other cities:
Dive Bar was by far my favorite dining experience during my stay in NYC. The menu had many NOLA inspired dishes and a huge beer selection. I had the tomato soup and muffaletta pretzletta. The half sandwich portion was very large and easily enough for 2 people. Our waitress was extremely friendly and attentive. The environment was fun and comfortable.
Thank god or whatever your respective holy power is but The Dive Bar(s) are my favorite establishments on Earth. Lee and Nick have always been the absolute best hosts. Their staff equally amazing over the years. Living a block from Dive 96 for 9 years I drank, ate and enjoyed life a lot more always being warmly welcomed here. The food is amazing, the beer selection amazing and the overall experience made it such a wonderful place to frequent (usually 8-10x week LOL!). Miss you all and thank you 🙏🏻
Great atmosphere for hanging out with friends and neighbors. Not only will you find a huge drink menu, including craft beers youve never heard of before but will most certainly want to try, but youll also find a great food menu as well. The establishment prides itself on just how good the food is! A must visit place in a terrific neighborhood thats easy to get to even if youre not on the upper west side.
Five star service. Food looks great and good portions. But they could be a couple bucks less per plate. Happy hour prices on the drinks are good. The drinks are good! I live on the upper west side. This place is close to me. Will be going again. Recommend the Nachos. Huge plate.
Our waitress had a quaint British accent, a high energy level and a positive attitude. It was an entertaining pleasure being served by her. The food was well prepared and a decent serving size for the price. I really enjoyed the variety of drink selections. The wait staff seemed very knowledgeable about the drinks and handled food allergy concerns with proper care. I look forward to returning on my next trip.
Good bar, though sometimes very crowded, with a great beer selection and possible growler fills (havent done yet). The prices were fair. Good for watching sports games. Our waitress was generally very attentive and paid attention to when our drinks were running low. Will go back, with my growler.
Pretty unfriendly service to begin with. When I finally got a seat at the bar, neither of the bartenders cleaned up the prior peoples drink glasses and wadded up napkins! Gross! I sat there as long as I could but after a half hour or so I couldnt take it any more so I left. I guess when they say Dive Bar, they really mean it.....I probably wont be going back....
I been going to this place for over 15 years. Drinks are pretty good, food is actually really good for bar food. Only problem for me is the bartenders lately just dont do it for me. either seem frustrated, overwhelmed or just not happy. forget trying to have a conversation with them. Some of the wait staff is pretty cool like Jessie, shes awesome. Always upbeat and on-point. Thanks Jessie!
I am confused and thoroughly disappointed. We have gone to this Dive Bar for many years. We ordered our dinner tonight for delivery. I had been craving Dive bars famous fries and Kentucky Bourbon wings. What arrived was not like anything wed had there before. The fries were thin and dry, the wings were BONELESS, not much flavor, just hot- nothing like what I had previously enjoyed at the Dive Bar-- and my husbands burger was like a hockey puck. We looked up photos online of the food wed ordered afterwards because we wondered if the food had changed-- new menu or something. Everything looked as we remembered from before. So we are mystified and disappointed-- and we LOVE this place. Or rather loved it.
I had previously given this bar 2 stars because its loud and service is slow. They seem to start raising the volume of the music at around seven. Why do bars do this? The extra star is because $5 wine at happy hour is a good deal, and the large plate of fries is the most fries ever.
Great. All-around great. From the staff, beer selection, decor and location, Dive Bar is one of my favorite spots in the city. Not too far North on the 1, 2, 3 line, but just far enough away from the bustle of Midtown. The staff is friendly, and the crowd is never too big. (Unless youre at the Bourbon County release event.) Its an excellent spot for people who love good beer.
Nice, local bar. We shared the 4 beer taster before settling on a pint each. They had a great variety of beers although a few of the were off the night we were there. We had the shrimp po boy and a burger and bother were good pub classics. On a Tuesday night they also have trivia on the screens.
Great place to chill. Service is fairly prompt, servers are kind, and the food is delicious. The poutine is the bomb. Happy hour prices are solid too, though I wish the hours were advertised, as it took me a couple of trips to figure out there was one. Go when they arent too busy and its all around great. If you dont like how packed the inside can get, theres usually a table outside you can snag. Cheers!
I can genuinely say, with all of the confidence inside me, that the host who works there is the most hospitable server, and person, I have ever met. While writing this, I am having a horribly difficult week, and the person working there completely lifted my spirits. I am unsure of his name, but we had a nice conversation, and he was able to offer a positive sentiment that helped curb my negative emotions. To the server who made the acquisition of fried pickles for my pmsing girlfriend, thank you so much for being who you are. This is written at 6:26 pm EST, on December 18, 2020. (I mention the date and time just so the server can be pinpointed exactly.)
It’s your typical dive bar...Sketchy looking with sometimes out of control individuals. Food is nothing special but definitely amazing when you need to find something after a night of partying. It’s just your typical bar to go grab a beer, a drink or two, and hang out with your friends in a very casual setting.
This is a review for the food, I went there for a quick dinner and didnt have anything to drink. The server was friendly and attentive, the atmosphere is nice, but I have to admit, I would not come back here for dinner if I was in the area.I had a salad with scallops on it and the scallops were so small I thought they were chickpeas. My friend has a chicken fajita and seemed to be content with it, but honestly it was mediocre bar food. Stick to what you know!
The service is good, the food is exactly what you want if you want bar food. Basically if you like loud, college style bars with bar food and a good beer selection, this place is for you. If you dont (like me), this place can still be tolerable, which makes it an absolute gem when I am forced to go to such bars by my friends.Edit/response for Dive Bar owners: Different people like different styles of bars. I know a lot of people love loud bars like yours (including many of my friends). Kudos to you all for hitting your niche and and still having a solid environment for those outside of the niche.
This place is the best. The food is excellent, but the vibe is what really makes this place stand out. It nails the divey feel youd expect from a place called Dive Bar, but with the friendliest service ever. We felt like it was our neighborhood bar, despite only popping in for some food and drinks to get out of the rain. Would highly recommend.
I stopped in with a friend after work randomly and do not regret our decision. The drinks are not cheap, but the quality is worth every cent. The food was extremely tasty too, and the waitress was very kind and helpful. Definitely hitting this place up again in the near future.
Great casual vibe. The beer selection is enormous. If you dont find a beer you like, then youre not a beer person... They also have various ciders available as well. Ive been a few times. Its always been pretty crowded, and normally their service is pretty good. However there was one day where the wait staff was all over the place: food to the wrong table, two waitresses accidentally covering the same table, the main course arrived before the appetizer, and the appetizer still showed on the bill when we sent it back (we thought they forgot about it which wasnt a big deal for us anyways).Everything was corrected at the end of it, and we got a sincere apology. Honestly I felt bad for the waitresses because it seemed like they were having one of those days where everything goes wrong. Weve all been there. It was far from a representative experience there, and it never kept me from going back.
The bartenders were friendly and when they were actually waiting on you - pretty accommodating. Wait staff deserves the credit for all 3 stars. But there were a whole lot of negatives. For the very small crowd that was there - less than 25 ppl- the friendly, accommodating bartenders were not very attentive at all. I had to wait and wait and draw considerable attention to myself to order or get a drink. And I was sitting center, at the bar; party of one.The worst side of this place: Obviously the bar cant really be held responsible for drunk Neanderthals looking to thrust themselves onto - or into, rather- undiscriminating women... but I specifically chose this place to AVOID that kind of thing. When one inebriated monkey got in my space, touching me presumptively, (again, right at the bar) started helping himself to my chips n salsa like we had ordered together or something... I looked around like, um is anyone seeing this..?? There was no backup offered, nor was this A hole even warned by the bouncer who sat at the door the entire 2 hours without peeking in or doing a sweep. Like I said, this is to be expected late nights at many bars.. but I did research to find a bar where this kind of thing was NOT typical. Ladies beware - 30-something men can still behave like 20-something men when intoxicated - even at supposedly 30+ casual unassuming bars that come highly recommended.
Great bar, good drinks reasonable price for a big city, food was quite good busy place, spent 2 full days drinking in there whilst staying in new York for a week back in 2017 and never felt out of place by customers or staff and I felt more at home and relaxed in this bar than I have done in plenty of pubs and bars in England. Would love to go back if Im ever in new York sgain
Great uptown spot for craft beers and trivia in a no frills environment. Havent been brave enough to eat anything here given the UWS has far better options for that.Im a sucker for fish tanks so it goes without saying that having one as the centerpiece of the bar is a plus in my book.Do be sure to take some of the free candy theyve got lying around if thats your thing.
TERRIBLE SERVICE. The waitress was rude. She messed up our food order. Did not bring us napkins. Over charged us by claiming everyone had 2 rounds of drinks and then called us a liar when we called her out on it. When she brought out the food she tried to hand it to my friend who had his phone in his hand. She took the plate and wiggled it in front of his face instead of just putting it on the table in front of him. He was confused and tried to move his hand out of the way and she almost dropped the plate on his lap. She got angry at him and told him to put his phone away. We are not coming back and I would suggest no one else come back until they figure out how to treat customers the right way.
Great drinks if youre willing to make the hike uptown. Dont be fooled by the name. Its definitely far from divey. Also dont think youre limited to your standard bar food. Oh no no... the food here really shines. I had their catfish sandwich, which was amazing. I was underwhelmed by the fries though. Just plan on polishing off your sandwich and youre more than set. They also have an extensive dessert menu - ask to take a peek and theyll bring over a tray for you to peruse.
This place has a really nice alcohol selection. The had at least 20 beers on tap including punkin ale. The food was pretty good, but the bartender forgot to put my order in, so I sat around for half an hour before I asked him what the deal was. I got my meal 5 minutes later, and for the trouble the bartender took the last beer I had off my tab.
After starting at another bar had we quickly left, we found dive bar and then stayed the rest of our night. This is an awesome place with great decor, friendly staff, tons of selection, and the best Guinness Ive ever had. If you like fun, go to dive bar; if not then I feel sad for you
Im with the other reviewers - average all around. The food is decent, the beer selection is decent, the beer is super cold and the service is friendly. I love the dive-y decor (both dive-related and dive as a descriptor) though and thank god for normal-sized bathrooms, a hot commodity on the UWS!
Lives up to the name. The decor is what your would expect from a dive bar. Lots of random knick-knacks on the walls, looks like it hasnt been updated in some time. I thought the atmosphere was really fun. That said, there are plenty of TVs here, and the taplist is excellent. They probably had 25 beers on tap, one from Other Half, 3 Bourbon County Stouts, and several other beers that arent necessarily easy to come by.They also appeared to have a large selection of bourbons and whiskeys. Couldnt really comment on the quality or prices, but there were certainly a lot of them.
The meal is really bad. We ordered a chicken sandwich but it didn’t have chicken, the salads were too spicy and the coke tasted like diluted with water. The WiFi service didn’t work! Although the place and waiter service are fine, definitely it isn’t a good value for money!
Cute and effective bar! Dropped in with two friends after an event. Spacing was a bit tight but then again, its Manhattan. I ordered a burger and fries with two glasses of wine while my friends had blue long islands. Food was decent, drinks were fine, waitress was sweet, and the ambiance was cool! No complaints here and if Im ever in the neighborhood, I would definitely drop in for a bite and drink. Be aware though, the security/owner does ID you! No complaints from me as Im in my 30s and found it as a bit of a compliment! BUTTTTT.....since having had a front row seat (only available seating was a table right by the door) and being able to witness that EVERYONE regardless of how old you looked was IDd.....I thought it was important to mention. Either way, have no fear....still a cool bar!
We went there twice during our stay in NYC. The service was good, a bartender with excelllent memory and good food as well. Few IPAs on tap (didnt try), for a sport fan it would be a good choice I reckon. Nothing fancy, just proper boozer. Can recommend if you live/stay nearby.
The first time i ate here, the food was incredible which influenced my decision to return. The second time, I was unfortuantely disappointed by almost facet of the dining experience. The only staff member working was more concerned with stuffing her/his (which pronoun is appropriate is unknown) own face than waiting on the patrons. The liberal burger I ordered was overcooked and undercooked all on one semi stale roll. The fries were barely cooked and dripping oil. I had the pleasure of washing it down with a improperly poured $12 beer. There are too many restaurants in NYC to roll the dice on overpriced food served by lazy staff members accompanied by even more expensive beer per ounce.
This place is average. The food is decent and the drink selection is good but I find the prices to be a bit high for what you get. I also find the clientele to be a bit surly at times and the awkward proximity of the table to the bar make it uncomfortable when the bar gets crowded. The acoustics are also really lousy so it is hard to hear. The staff is pleasant though.
A wonderful community of people from all walks of life. The Dive Bar became our date night destination nearly twenty years ago, and has continued to be our home away from home! The people who work there are always welcoming and fun, in addition to being highly professional. The food is always a cut above the usual pub grub, especially the mussels from around the world!
Despite the name, this bar isnt particularly divey. Its large, well lit (for a bar), and has a extensive food menu and beer selection. While my dining partners had a regular lager and wings, I was able to get a Belgian witbier, eggplant parm panini, and a surprisingly fresh salad. The price was also reasonable, considering the location.
The name says it all. Legendary drink specials, a beer list to shock even Bacchus himself carrying even the fabled Gulden Draak. It doesnt stop there, Poutine and Shakshuka on demand and oysters. Surprisingly delicious fare at an establishment humbly referred to as Dive Bar. Definitely worth a visit!
One of the local bars in my neighborhood, my roommate and I usually end up here when were not sure what to do for dinner. The food is well above your typical bar standard, and they have a very wide selection of beer that can serve any beer-drinkers taste. The staff is friendly and helpful when they can be - even though the kitchen always seems to take forever to deliver the food (which is always worth the wait). It gets very crowded on game days, but if you can get there early enough for a seat at the bar, its worth it!
Just ate a delicious Lobster Mac&Cheese, substantial ‘small’ side salad... love the way the oil and balsamic, to dress the salad, came as 2 separate bottles to be applied by the customer... waiting on Pecan Pie. Have drunk a tasty Pumpkin Ale, my 1st, followed by a Nitro Lefthand Stout. Great and attentive service from a friendly young blonde. She’s off on holiday to the UK and Ireland so going to leave her a $20 to buy some Guinness with. Suggested she Google Ireland’s highest altitude Guinness, not far from Dublin, and go drink a beer there, or several. Around this ‘hood’ for a few more days and hopefully will be back to try some more of the menu and beer. Busy bar, a good sign, and I bet most of them are locals. Highly recommend!
That I hadnt yet reviewed Dive Bar on 96th is almost disturbing, since it is the nicest Dive Bar in the area. Their beer menu is longer than a New Yorker thinkpiece and is certain to have at least a couple that will hook you in (but some will still drink Bud...erm, not that theres anything wrong with it). But honestly, I go to Dive Bar to stuff my face with their pretzel sliders cuz I believe them to be Gods answers to why we should go on living despite the shitstorm raging outside...
Non-franchise Sports Pub segment. See the specials food menu in the photos below (not on their website), the yellow papered images I uploaded. LARGE Beer menu also uploaded for viewing (pink papered images). Located a short walk East from the 96th Street 1, 2, 3 train express stop. This place is a Hidden Gem. More a location for the post-college age demographic. Monitors are abundant. Bar top seating, tables, booths and outside seating is available. The website above has their standard menu for viewing. Comfortable, theme decor. The staff was honest, friendly and served a full house very efficiently. Prices par. Portions a little more than par. The bourbon flavored wings definitely were better than the standard Buffalo flavor. I had the double smash sliders as my entree from the specials menu (in the pics, the one with the jalepeno bread bun and veggies). Great food! Tom the barkeep was knowledgeable and helpful in guiding someone through their large beer menu.
Rudest bartender/waitress Ive ever encountered in my life.Edit/explanation: waitress yelled and berated a group of foreigners for about 2-3 minutes because of a misunderstanding. I wasnt even a customer in this situation- I just witnessed it. This bar is not very friendly toward foreign travelers. There is no situation when it is okay to speak to people this way.
DISRESPECTFUL STAFF- KICKED US OUT FOR NOT NOT DRINKING ALCOHOLI wish I could give this place a negative review. My wife and I were just kicked out of the Dive Bar by the male bartender for not drinking alcohol. We went there to watch Game 7 of the yanks game (diehard yankee fans). We waiting a bit for a seat, then we sat down at the end of the bar and ordered and paid for seltzers. The bartender asked us if we were drinking...I advised him no we were not drinking alcohol (because my wife may be pregnant) and he had told us I have paying customers and if you arent drinking leave. Regardless of pregnancy or not, its COMPLETELY WRONG to kick someone out for not drinking alcohol. We will NEVER go back there again...what a heartless way to treat people.
Reasonable prices and good bar food... quick service with a somewhat mixed crowd... definitely not a real dive bar but the closest you can find on the Upper West side in 2016 I would have to say... anytime i am in the upper west side this is one of my go-to spots for a pint or three...
8/20/16...Dive Bar on Broadway ...dont waste your time...Evening of decompressing I fan of 80s rock music...plays the Village People_YMCA...Customer begins to criticize his choice in song advocates for LGBTQ community . Bartender offers discriminator free drink ..assistant blames customers response to my choice in song to complainers exhaustion.Ive been exhausted before , never causing discrimination ,Im a Social service employee and cannot fathom discrimination, particularly at a place for relaxation and socialization. If u respect equality dont visit location ,broadway Dive Bar ..

2022-03-20Recently, at Dive Bar on Manhattan’s Upper West Side, I got a lovely hazy IPA and an absolutely incredible Guinness beef stew that rivaled my grandparents home cooking. The Rye whiskeys were on the house from Lee, the Best bar owner in NYC! If you are looking for a pub forward dining experience in terms food, Dive Bar is an excellent choice. Lee is always adding both innovative recipes and classics with a twist to the menu. You won’t be disappointed!

2022-05-13The food was okay. We had the chicken fingers, fries, onion rings and lobster mac and cheese everything was pretty decent except the onion rings they were flavorless. We sat outside and the table was slanted so our drinks literally slid off the table twice. We told the waitress and she said well you could always sit inside at a booth lol.

2022-04-10Honestly, I was very impressed with the food. Better than I thought Id get at a dive bar. And a large selection. I was also very impressed with the vegan options for my friend. Definitely going to start eating out here more often.

2021-10-21Came to dive bar on a weeknight at 11 pm because it was one of the very few places that had outdoor seating and was still open at that time in the neighborhood. We were seated outside but it took some time before the server came with waters for us. Got the dive bar burger and the everything wings. We were almost served some other partys food at one point. When the food finally came, the fries that came with the burger were cold (they had so much potential to be delicious though because they had that crispy coat to it). Burger was pretty good, I was a pretty big fan of the bun and the patty was cooked well. The wings were perfectly crispy but lacked some flavor (perhaps a little more salt wouldve helped?). While there were a few hiccups in the overall dining experience, dive bar met my needs for a super late dinner.

2022-03-19Are you really reading this review considering stopping by? Get there!!! Dive Bar is an oasis of a watering hole! The number of draft beers alone is worth the trip and the tasty pub grub is delectable! Creative specials come in and out, but the wings and sandwiches are always top notch! Still reading? Get there! Friendly welcoming staff and a family atmosphere

2022-07-04Y’all. This bar. Okay — I’ve lived on 96 my whole life. As soon as I turned 21, I was front row girl. This place has it all: wonderful staff, really cool people go there to drink, it’s open late, good food and great drinks. Grab your neighbor, grab that guy you vibed with on the train, and come to this bar.

2022-04-16Excellent rotating draft beer selection. Amazing food options for vegetarians, vegans, etc. Most of all, if you didnt think you could find a neighborhood bar atmosphere in Manhattan, you gotta try this place.

2022-05-17Great drink selection, friendly service, and improved vegan friendly menu. Not really divey, but a very laid back & unpretentious bar to enjoy some drinks and food with friends.

2022-06-22Went in sat down and was not even addressed by any staff. Its almost like we werent even there. It wasnt busy or crowded. Would never put a foot in there again.
