Never in my life have I had a waiter discourage me to order an appetizer while we are putting in the orders because we didnt tell him the appetizer first. (Note this is all while hes taking the same set of orders). If there is a system in place, he should have explained it to us first. The service here is sub par.
The food is delicious but the prices have gotten out of control recently. You can see old photos from the menu where some dishes have gone up by as much as 50% in price just in a year and a half. Tasty food but can only have it once in a while due to costs these days.
👎🏼🤮 This isnt Indian food. Its just some chef pretending to make Indian food. The Idli was salty and rubbery. Idlis are supposed to be light and fluffy. Takes a real genius to mess up this dish. The vada was dense, salty, and lacked any kind of flavor. Vadas are meant to be crisp on the outside and soft on the inside. The Dosa, which I presume was made from the same batter was another salty mess. The sambar was the only saving grace here and the chutneys, especially the red one, well I dont know what you call that! Theres nothing Royale about this restaurant.
I was so ready to love this place! It is cute inside and there are so many dosa options, plus it is reasonably priced. I came here for early dinner, ordered, ate and couldn’t finish all of my food. After waiting several minutes, the waiter didn’t check on me, so I had to get them and ask for a container. I took my food home and ate a second dinner later that night. After warming all of my food in their original containers, I went to dip the dosa in the curry sauce with all the carrots and veggie goodness. When I took a bite, there was something hairy and chewy in it. I pulled it out and it was part of a scrubbing sponge. Surely it was not a new one and I am horrified that I found it in my food. While cute and likely the other food is delicious, I won’t be returning to risk other physical contamination in my food.
Rude staff, messed up order, and foreign object in foodCalled ahead to place and pick up a simple order - the man at the phone was very rude and sarcastic. When I reached home and realized that half of the order they had given me (and billed me correctly for) was incorrect, I called up and the same rude man answered and didnt seem to believe me or have the patience for me to send him an image of the mistake. Once the image went through, they refused to fix the order, but said they would refund the whole amount. They only refunded half. After the whole ordeal was over and we decided to eat the food we were given anyway we found some sort of plastic in the dosa. Didnt bother calling back. Super disappointed.
Food is excellent. However we ordered from Caviar and the dosa - the main part of our meal - was left out of the order. When I called to ask if they could deliver the missing item, I was told I’d have to ask for a refund, reorder and wait the 50 min Caviar delivery time. Seems like a courtesy could have been extended given half our meal was left out of the bag.
We placed an order for delivery on a Monday night. Our food came more than two hours later and was ice cold. The person who picked up the phone when we called to ask about our 2 hour delivery was pretty rude. When we eventually got our food we were so hungry that we ate it cold and it was pretty good. I would like to give them another try since I am new to the neighborhood and love Indian food but if I’m gonna be honest, this was not the best first impression.
I’m not sure what was going on with this place today, but it definitely wasn’t their best. Placed our order a little after 7 and didn’t get it until 9:15. Curry was lukewarm, dosa was cold, naan was cold and tough. We had actually gone by earlier to eat in person and found the wait staff to be pretty frosty (it was drizzly so we didn’t opt for the outdoor seats), but we gave them a second shot with dinner delivery.I may give them another try yet, but I’m not getting my hopes up. If the food had arrived sooner and had been hot (or even warm for that matter), I’m sure it would have been pretty good.
What time is your last order? The restaurant closing timings are shown as 10pm/11pm yet when I arrived by 9:30pm yesterday (Tuesday) I was told the kitchen is shut?Revise your timings properly. Don’t tell customers you close at 10pm when you stop taking orders a half hour before
Clanging from 5 stars to 3 because the delivery is just so inconsistent and so often delayed- its a shame because the food is really good, and as authentic you are going to get for South Indian food. I think some of the problem is the delivery apps, giving you an initial estimate, then increasing the time, but the restaurant shouldnt give an estimate, then actually get the food ready an HOUR later. Its too much.
This used to be a decent place, but both the service and the food quality have deteriorated significantly over time. The serving lady is often rude. This time she started stuffing our tables with the main course, when the table had no room left and we were clearly still working on the starters. The food is bland and no longer tastes authentic, which it used to a couple of years back. The place requires customers to pay only in cash. The ATM inside the restaurant used to be free but now requires customers to pay a transaction fee. I will not visit them again.
Best Idli outside of India. Missed The taste dearly. I have been looking for Idli in different countries and cities and found it here! A traditional breakfast from street food to restaurants to home made goodies, one can only imagine the best morning treat in South India. And at Dosa Royale, the fresh, soft, tasteful rice cake is just exactly the SAME as in my memory. Amazed, satisfied. Will def come back.
The service was ok. I felt bad for the server. He was juggling a full house along with a phone that would not stop ringing for to go orders (the ringing was really annoying). The family dosa that we ordered was good, but the chicken korma had no taste and the chicken was not tender. The other dishes our party ordered were average. I will not go back.
If i could give this place less than 1 star i would. Never ordering from here again!! Food over 2 hrs late, they obviously unplugged their phone to avoid complaints. Terrible service! And their food is mediocre at best. Such a waste of time. NEVER ORDER FROM THIS PLACE THEY ARE THE WORST!! So many better options in nyc
WOW! This is a hidden gem on the side streets of Brooklyn. One of The Best Indian spots I have ever eaten at! The food felt home cooked and extremly tasty. The Dosa Royal is extremly popular and huge and filling. The butter chicken and Cauliflower was very tasteful. They serve home made chapati, simply amazing! I HIGHLY recommend this place!!!!!!!!!!P.S. This is a cash only place
Food is okay so I may come back but only for delivery. Was there to dine-in Saturday night and the service was so bad: no one greeted us when we walked in. A staff member was seated low behind the counter, and we had to walk to the back of the restaurant to ask her for a table. A diner dropped a fork and no one helped her pick it up. They’re cash only yet they don’t have change to make change (awkward). And there’s no door to the kitchen, so the front house staff stand around joking and laughing loudly with kitchen staff. With so many options in the neighborhood I’m surprised they think they can get away with such poor service.
I always enjoy the food at Dosa Royale. However, on this visit the service was terrible. I arrived at 3:35PM and was told that the lunch special, that ends at 4PM wasnt available and I had to order from the regular menu. At the conclusion of my meal, I received the wrong change back from the waiter. When I attempted to correct the waiter, who clearly doesnt yet understand US money, he apologized but would not give me anymore money! He kept saying that his co-worker had told him what each of the bills were worth and he couldnt do anything for me. I will not return to this location.
If you want classic South Indian dishes with good balance of flavors youre better off heading elsewhere like Mid-town or Jackson Heights. This little Ft. Greene spot was about what youd expect for the neighborhood.. They have a few interesting veg-friendly fusion dishes on the menu. Otherwise its mostly dosas for people who plan poorly / dont know any better.
We recently visited Dosa Royale for a birthday dinner celebration. We were warmly greeted. The service was prompt and friendly. The food was authentic and delicious. The portions were good and our group of eight left feeling full. Our favorite dishes were the Shrimp Kolumbu, Tamarind Rice (w/fried egg), Onion Rava Dosa, and the mango lassi. We highly recommend this restaurant.
They added an extra $2 to my credit card charge. I have the receipt too. Silly amount to fight over but not okay! Just over $20 on a meal for one. One dish with a side of bread. It was luke warm and came out so quickly it couldnt have possibly been fresh. I get its hard times which is why I was originally ordered despite the high price ($18).
This is the best indian restaurant in Fort Greene/Clinton Hill. The quality of the dishes is outstanding and every meal is better than the last. The dosas, butter chicken, spinach curry, and samosa chaat are my personal favorites. This is one of those places where you want to try everything on the menu. Ive never been disappointed. Delivery or dine-in, doesnt matter, always good.
Was looking forward to trying this lovely looking spot out while safely maintaining social distancing. My husband ordered our food inside, the gentlemen inside wasnt wearing a mask, but he thought he would be putting one on. When he came outside to bring us water he was not wearing a mask. I was stunned because every other establishment I have been to has observed precautions like wearing gloves and masks and using single use cups. When I asked if he would be wearing a mask our server was so flippant as if it was such a hassle. He said I already told him were out of masks. I dont know which him he had told this to but it was not my husband. What was even more off-putting than him not wearing a mask was the dismissive tone in which he told us that he wasnt going to wear a mask and thats just the way it is. As if his actions were not an active choice. I know that leaving ones home brings inherent risks, but Ive been rocking a mask and gloves or dousing myself in hand sanitizer to help do my part. I am not interested in supporting anything less than the same.
The food is ok, but the cocktails that online sites claimed they supposedly served were a mirage. They do have a (very) few beer selections (but they were out of Brooklyn Lager, in Brooklyn!). Our waitress knew very little English, which created issues such as missed orders and lack of communication. Luckily someone else was fluent, but please, how can someone wait on tables when they dont know what the customers are asking for ?
Ordered chicken korma, uttapam, a masala dosa, and a side of rice. The chicken korma was heaven, though it was a little frustrating paying $10 for a side of plain basmati rice. The uttapam was good but the masala dosa was so chewy/tough I couldnt rip through it with my teeth. Bummer.
I have been craving idli at work since so long finally found my new obsession. I ordered the idli and the samosa chat and they both turned out better than I expected. The samosa chat is not like the other ones Ive had here before and theirs is perfect. Cant wait to try the other items on the menu. So happy this exists in Brooklyn !! South Indian me is super Happy :)
There were 5 pieces of baby eggplant for my $12 entree and they didnt even cook the flavor into the eggplant. Ordered an additional entree for a proper meal, the spinach and paneer dosa. The spinach was sour. The little bit of paneer was shredded, which I wasnt expecting. The crispy parts of the dosa bread were good and the paratha but definitely not worth the $36 I ended up spending. Never going back.
Such a sweet place, they have given trendy names for few food items and that catches your attention, I tried their CAULIFLOWER LASUNI which was amazing, this place has a good varieties of dosa. Worth a try.PS: they don’t accept credit/debit cards, carry enough cash or withdraw from the in-house atm.
Not your typical Indian fare (e.g., chicken tikka masala, lamb korma, naan). The many dosa dishes with the dipping sauces are tasty, enormous, and satisfying. Always, always, always get a dosa. However, I am often disappointed with their other entrees. While the rice dishes are tasty, the portion sizes are lacking. We ordered another rice dish thinking that they would improve after relocating from Carroll Gardens to Fort Greene, but again we were disappointed. From now on, were only ordering dosas.
This place probably is only for dosas - which is very oily/greasy too. We tried vada - soaking in oil. And eggplant kulambu - very very oily. Stomach didnt feel very good. Hopefully they dont reuse used oil, you never know 😓PS. Beware: Cash only place. They have their own ATM though but your bank may charge you per transaction.

2021-10-28REALLY tasty food for Indian food. They did a solid job on the Samosa chaat and Tandoori chicken. The chicken 65 is on the sweet side (tastes like Sesame chicken) but is a nice contrast to the other food. My biggest complaint is the portion size (extremely small for price and compared to other Indian restaurants). This place is 5 stars for taste but lost a star for the portion size.I believe this place is worth the try.

2022-04-20Food came quick. The shrimp curry was so salty I had to eat it with a lot of rice to make it edible. I didn’t even take the leftovers home. For the price I expected it to be way better or at least fun to eat. :/

2022-02-04Delicious and fresh... I love the spices- their other dishes besides dosas, are all unique and very tasty. Try their tangy spicy soup... better than at other Indian restaurants and life-giving on a rainy day like today!

2021-09-14August 2021: what a surprise find. Food was authentic. Quiet location in a residential area. Service could use some additional help when it was busy.We had dosa, coconut rice, chole batture, chai, and lots more. Everything was great.

2022-06-22Horrible service!! The male waiter was extremely rude to everyone in the restaurant (only 3 tables of customers, not busy whatsoever). He basically threw food on our table. Making extremely loud noise by throwing plates in the tray. He seemed very annoyed when we asked questions about the menu. When there were items missed in our dishes, he didn’t inform us in advance. Literally the worst service I have encountered in NYC!!! I felt bad for the owner of this restaurant who hires him, because the food was great. But definitely would NOT recommend this restaurant due to extremely unpleasant experience.

2022-05-28Food was okay, not great - quite salty. Sadly the coconut rice that I ordered came with mold.

2022-04-03As an Indian it takes a lot for me to like an Indian restaurant. Needless to say my expectations were not high coming in. The food is simple, I would even call it somewhat underspiced but in a surprisingly good way. Quick service and great flavor with the chutneys and sambhar hitting the right notes (spices, ginger and everything) and the absence of food coloring and too much oil that one finds in most Indian restaurants. Great job!

2022-07-05Mixed my order! Now lemme just say I love me a dosa but it’s really frustrating when you wait an hour for it just to get the wrong order. I’m also super mindful of things happening sometimes by mistake so I looked up this place here just to read everyone’s reviews and it looks like it’s a daily common review! Late orders and mixed/incorrect orders. So there you go. Consider yourself warned. I never really even bothered asking for a refund or replacement since I ordered through DoorDash and it wasn’t really their fault. Just thought of leaving this review instead.

2022-04-03The dosas were crisp and light and the chutneys/daal flavorful and the right level of spice. The dining room is no frills and not the cleanest.
