The area is cool and a unique circle in NYC. Being right next to central park, its quite beautiful. The NYC Marathon runs trough here as well.I live right next to it, and it is nice but could use a clean up. Recently, there have been gunshots right nearby so don’t go late at night I guess?Overall pretty cool
The Duke Ellington Statute stands proud and Quite tall at the Northeast corner of Central Park in Harlem in the Duke Ellington Traffic Circle. The greek inspired triplet of pillars raises the statue high above traffic on busy 5th Avenue at 110th street.A small amphitheater surrounds the statue and is a pleasantly shaded place to grab a seat during the summer months. If youre looking to grab a photo, there is another area just to the east of the statue across 5th avenue that provides an ideal angle. Pro tip: Try to shoot at either very early morning or just before sundown to get a better balance of light and shadow.
The statue depicts him standing alone by his piano, but Dukes true instrument was his entire orchestra, which he kept on the go for 50 years. To me, the statue fails to capture the movement and grandeur of the entire Ellington enterprise. Still, I am glad it is there in Harlem, where most of Ellingtons music was composed and played for the first time.
Edward Kennedy Duke Ellington (April 29, 1899 – May 24, 1974) was an American composer, pianist, and leader of a jazz orchestra, which he led from 1923 until his death over a career spanning more than fifty years.Born in Washington, D.C., Ellington was based in New York City from the mid-1920s onward and gained a national profile through his orchestras appearances at the Cotton Club in Harlem. In the 1930s, his orchestra toured in Europe. Although widely considered to have been a pivotal figure in the history of jazz, Ellington embraced the phrase beyond category as a liberating principle and referred to his music as part of the more general category of American Music rather than to a musical genre such as jazz. Some of the jazz musicians who were members of Ellingtons orchestra, such as saxophonist Johnny Hodges, are considered to be among the best players in the idiom. Ellington melded them into the best-known orchestral unit in the history of jazz. Some members stayed with the orchestra for several decades. A master at writing miniatures for the three-minute 78 rpm recording format, Ellington wrote more than one thousand compositions; his extensive body of work is the largest recorded personal jazz legacy, with many of his pieces having become standards. Ellington also recorded songs written by his bandsmen, for example Juan Tizols Caravan, and Perdido, which brought a Spanish tinge to big band jazz. In the early 1940s, Ellington began a nearly thirty-year collaboration with composer-arranger-pianist Billy Strayhorn, whom he called his writing and arranging companion. With Strayhorn, he composed many extended compositions, or suites, as well as additional short pieces. Following an appearance at the Newport Jazz Festival, in July 1956, Ellington and his orchestra enjoyed a major revival and embarked on world tours. Ellington recorded for most American record companies of his era, performed in several films, scored several, and composed a handful of stage musicals.Ellington was noted for his inventive use of the orchestra, or big band, and for his eloquence and charisma. His reputation continued to rise after he died, and he was awarded a posthumous Pulitzer Prize Special Award for music in 1999.

2022-06-01A historical reminder of Harlem Splendor, the Renaissance, and the impact of Jazz upon American culture. It sits at one of the four corners of Central park and is the gateway to museum mile if headed downtown. Steps away from the Meer and Conservancy of beautiful gardens. The statue concept is fitting however the craftmanship of stonework immediately surrounding the statue along with its maintenance leave a bit to desired. However the Statue itself captures the essence of his musical genius. Tall, its piano high above the ground denotes a sentimental mood and the richness of his contributions to music globally.

2021-02-10This is a tall elegant monument to one of the heroes of jazz. At the northeast corner of Central Park this statue of Duke Ellington standing next to a grand piano is balanced on a set of pillars next to Tito Puente Way in East Harlem. Each pillar is held up by a group of angelic looking women with everything in black. The underside of the piano is a shimmering majestic gold all opposite The African Center. Have your camera ready, and this monument is well worth the trip.

2019-10-12I love the statue because it represents music, which I love and practice myself as a singer. I remember one night I was sitting on the steps and singing La Vie en Rose and it was the best I had ever practiced it! Needless to say, the view of the moon and placement of the statue really work well together to charge the space with an energy that has magnetic and illustrious strength.
