I have come to love the food from Edgars and I planned on taking my friends here for breakfast but I wanted to check the reviews as I have only ever ordered from doordash. The behavior of the owner is shocking and I can assuredly say I will not be visiting in person ever. Im happy to have my food delivered instead.
My companion ordered a $3 coffee, but I chose not to place an order. His order was promptly delivered to the table, at which point we were informed that there was a $5 minimum per person. This “policy” was not posted on the wall, nor was it printed in the menu, nor was it verbally communicated to us until AFTER my companion’s coffee was delivered.I left. He proceeded to quickly down his coffee and was required to pay $5 for a coffee which was clearly marked as $3.It was a bad experience. Not recommended.
Apparently the owner or manager may be of some relation to Edgar based on his people skills. Was waiting for my company to arrive and pulled out my tablet to review some work. Was told that I had to put it away and there is no WiFi. I told the waitress its not a problem and that I didnt need any. A man, apparently the owner, came out and started to speak in a loud, angry voice, pointing at signs that are outside of the restaurant that say no laptops, no online meetings, and caused a commotion that attracted the attention of all people there. He said no electronic devices at all. I told him that I didnt know and never encountered such an issue before. The owner responded angrily that I didnt have to eat there. So I told the owner that I wouldnt and Im leaving. The other diners were shocked and even apologized to me and said that the guy is crazy.I can certainly appreciate venues having problems with difficult, rude people parking themselves in restaurants for a cup of coffee and sitting there for hours having online meetings, pretending it is their office. I told them when I arrived that I was waiting for someone who would arrive 5 minutes later and had no such intention. Being polite and courteous to inform someone isnt too difficult. I can appreciate the staffs frustration too. But there was no need to let the entire venue know their rule and take it out on a patron.Unrelated and also quite terrible, which almost made me leave before this happened. I sat in the small outdoor area was because there was no air conditioning inside, which made sitting there impossibly uncomfortable. And to add to the bizzare nature, the table they set up was next to the open storage area underneath the restaurant, which was directly to the right of the side door they created to make more space. Its a dangerous fall waiting to happen. Ive been there before several times but this will be the last. A great case study and example of how not to run a restaurant.
Horrendous service. Incredibly awful and prejudiced owner. They will degrade you and are hostile towards anyone if you dont seem even the slightest bit European. On one occasion, the owner verbally abused me and degraded me in front of all of the customers - he approached me to, instead of kindly notifying me of the no device policy, scold me in front of the entire cafe and yell at me to get out. I have never been treated so inhumanely. He practically chased me out of there. It was utterly shameful behavior. This is all to say, I encourage my fellow neighbors to avoid this establishment, simply put, because we cannot celebrate nor support such disgusting behavior in our beloved neighborhood. And indeed, I am not the only one to have had this experience, given past posts.
A. The food and drinks here tastes so bad. Save yourself and go to Starbucks.B. Customer service was the worst thing I’ve ever experienced. Witnessed them yell at and kick out a girl today for absolutely no reason besides what I can only assume to be racial profiling.C. Worst cafe experience of my life and I suggest you don’t go anywhere near this place if you love yourself.
Everything is overpriced. They demanded each person to order $5 minimum even though there is no indication when you walk in. My friend ended up leaving so I can finish my espresso. I ordered an espresso that’s marked $3, but the bill comes and it’s $5. Do not recommend.
Weird place. I should’ve listened to reviews about not wanting people to work, but I figured it was a technology vendetta. Place is almost empty and I get chastised for pulling out a book. Food is super meh, 2/10 at best, and decor is “inspired by” Poe (stones ripped off a building he wrote The Raven in, taped to the current building wall). Hard pass.
Sweet little cafe in the neighborhood. Food is excellent! Chocolate desert is amazing :)Staff is super friendly and always smiling even with the mask on, you could see it in their eyes! The owner is always there and greeting his customers with the best smile! Feels good to sit there and have a great italian food!!
I wanted a place to read until late while drinking coffee and eating. I walked 15 minutes to get here. I ordered like $15 worth of food and drinks and was planning to spend $10-$20 more over the next couple hours. But...within 15 seconds of sitting down the waitress kicks me out telling me her boss doesnt allow me to use my tablet. Its a free country I guess but I wont be coming back. I get not wanting people to take up tables while others are waiting but I was literally only one of two occupied tables out of maybe 15 total.
Really disappointing. I came for Sunday brunch. The service was very slow and it was difficult to communicate with the wait staff because one person who waited on us spoke no English and the other spoke limited English. The food was bad too. I ordered a slice of apple Brown Betty to start, and while it did taste good, it was straight out of the fridge. It would have been much better warm. I also ordered an omelette with veggies and cheese and a side of potatoes. It took about 25 minutes to arrive, and when it did the waitress said “sorry no potatoes”. The omelette had no flavor and didn’t seem to have any cheese—I couldn’t taste or see any, though the waitress assured me it was there. It also came with a salad, but the lettuce had that red stuff it gets on the edges when it goes bad. At the end I tried to pay, and several minutes after I gave my credit card, the waitress came back and said the credit card machine was broken.
Today I was finishing my report on laptop at this place. I’ve been treated so bad just I have my laptop in front of me. The owner of the place run into my table and historically started shaking his hands near my face and showing how desperately they desire only customers with cash and no technologies;) they brought check without asking and the reputation of this place forever will be on the very low level.
FROM LOVE TO COMPLETE DISAPPOINTMENT AND SADNESS .We used to love Edgar’s Cafe at 650 Amsterdam (between 92 & 91). The food was always good and Bennie the owner was very friendly to us. We’ve brought at least 16 of our friends here over time and they began to frequent Edgar’s.In the past I had heard from a number of friends that he went crazy screaming at them if they were on iPods or phones. Recently I too have seen him in action : yelling at customers, waitstaff.Last we were there and the service which used to be decent was awful! We asked the server for water and menus which we got in about 10 minutes. However 40 minutes past, no server.Since I’ve known Bennie for many years I went to him. With a smile and In a nice, quiet voice - no anger or hostility - I asked if there was a problem because we had been there for 50 minutes without ordering.Bennie started screaming at me (really screaming loudly) in front of all the patrons. My partner who was sitting outside came in to see what the ruckus was. Then Bennie says in such a nasty way “I SEE YOU BOTH GO EAT AT THE RESTAURANT NEXT DOOR SCARLATTO “. Then he repeats I SEE YOU EAT THERE!Does he punish customers who go to Scarlatto? I think he’s lost his marbles. The is crazy nuts! The experience at Edgar’s was embarrassing. I mean what restaurant owners yell at their patrons? We are never eating there again and we have shared this with all our friends and neighbors. It’s a shame that Bennie’s Anger permeates Edgar’s.Goodbye Bennie from 16 former customers.
We used to go to this restaurant when we lived in the area roughly ten years ago. We’ve since moved up to Harlem and forgot all about Edgar’s. We’ve only recently rediscovered it and are glad we did. Both my wife and I really love this place. The staff is wonderfully friendly, the food is great and very reasonably priced and the desserts are to die for. Just a truly pleasant experience every time we go to Edgars.
I love this place, the food is consistently good , service is friendly and love that owner Benny always asks how things are! I’ve been going to cafe Edgar’s for over 25 years when it was o west 84th st and followed them uptown to Amsterdam ave. Also amazing is their selection of desserts!
Always loved Edgars! Theyre known for their cakes, coffees, and teas - which are as good as billed. Theyre other food delights as well. Recently went for brunch and the selection was great. I appreciate that they use organic eggs and other fresh ingredients. I do note that my poached eggs were a little too hard, but still tasty - please let the cook know. Theyre taking Covid-19 precautions and thats appreciated.
Cute little cafe. It reminds me a little like a cafe that was on Broadway, between 79th and 80th, that no longer exists. I cant remember the name. Great place to get dessert and coffee or light appetizers like bruschetta. They also serve dinner, too. Staff is very attentive and enjoyed my younger son who can be very social and talkative.
Overpriced, bland food options, as my salad was without dressing nor was my protein cooked. The owner (old white guy) keeps intruding into your conversation, the waiters rush you and don’t even provide sauces. Avoid small tables as there’s no room for all the toppings, water etc and your food, which is bound to spill. The light turns off randomly, the walls pealing, and not a comfortable experience.
Very unprofessional and rude service. We went there to celebrate a special occasion, and were looking forward to enjoying time with friends. The rude waitress forced us ALL to order an item (no splitting of any desserts allowed apparently, and you couldn’t just order a hot drink, it had to be accompanied by a dessert!) or else we wouldn’t be able to stay. None of us wanted to ruin the occasion so all reluctantly ordered under the scrutinizing glare of the waitress. We wanted to split the bill onto two cards, but that wasn’t allowed either. We worked things out with the cards only to have issues with tips come up. The waitress ran after us stating what we did was “illegal”, which basically meant we didn’t tip as much as she wanted us to. The cherry on top was that she would “return the tip, since you guys probably need it anyways”.. excuse me? Tipping is based on gratuity, it is not the law. We were very unhappy. Stay away.
AMAZING!!! The atmosphere the food and now the prices! Best in all of the upper west side!! I came in for a cup of cappuccino and then they suggested the special they were offering. I was amazed to find out I would get a pasta of my choice, a salad and a glass of wine for only 22 dollars! Is this even real in NYC??? This is a must, come on your own, come on a date but you must come! I’ve fallen madly in love with this gothic charm!
This is one of my favorite restaurants in NYC. It is dark, cozy, and romantic. They have a beautifully decorated space themed around Edgar Allan Poe. The food is gorgeous and the owner is such a friendly man who clearly taught the kitchen how to prepare food like youd expect from a traditional kitchen in Italy. Many of the patrons have become his friend and he will sit with them and chat for a couple minutes. The staff are cheerful and attentive and make it a joy to visit. Even if this isnt your regular spot, give it a shot, Im sure you wont be disappointed.
The owner was super rude to me and my classmate. He made the servers basically kick us out within 7 minutes of arriving. Its honestly amazing to me that they make any money at all treating people like that. All of their money has to come from people who order something thinking itll be a nice coffee shop and then immediately leave cause they realise theyre unwelcome. The servers were sweet and amazing and made a really good drink and even put my drink in a to go cup when I was no longer welcome. But that owner is really a horrible person and horrible business owner.
Like others have posted, I was drawn in by the great deal of a salad, wine, and pasta all for $22 - what a deal! You get to pick pretty much any pasta on the menu, any wine, and get a small house salad (same deal for two people but only $39 total). I had the pasta a la vodka and it was basic but good. The tiramisu was simply wonderful though! An easy walk from Central Park, not too far from time square, and definitely worth the price.
Great place and location overall.Very sweet and attentive service.Wish I could give it 5 stars but cant because the cook never learned how to make a proper omelette. He cooks them at way to high a temperature and that kills the eggs. They come out of the kitchen flat and lifeless. Alas.Rest of the place and the food is good.
Small, quiet, dim lit. Great atmosphere for small quiet get together or a date. They serve delicious cakes and pies, some of which are kosher. We had chocolate mousse cheesecake, chocolate banana mousse, lemonade. The server was very nice and helpful. Well be coming back.
The food was good and so were some of the deserts. The coffee was good. Both our servers left during our stay... with no warning or advisement at all. The, maybe, bus boy? Took care of us along with someone who might have been the owner. They seemed to have a hard time understanding us at all or getting anything to the table in a timely fashion. Service seemed overall disinterested.
Before you go here, read the Yelp reviews and youll see just how bad peoples experiences have been. Owner treats customers with disrespect and contempt. Screams at people to leave when all but one table is empty. Its one thing to be civilized and come to the customer directly and politely ask that they either order more or leave because of restaurant policy. That would have been perfectly fair and acceptable (even though again, the place was empty). Instead, this guy screams about it (not even at me) but to the entire restaurant. According to other reviews, especially on Yelp, this wasnt the first time.According to other reviews, this guy has blatantly told people he does not care about their experience because he has been open for so long. He clearly thinks he can treat people in whatever way he wants. There are so many great places in NY. Dont go to this place. Show guys like this that you CANNOT just get away with treating customers like dirt.
Per other 1-star reviews, this one aligns. What a grumpy and mean old man!And what an EMPTY cafe!I went there with a good friend; this was our second visit. Similar to the first visit, we were among maybe 3 other 2-seaters in the cafe. Unlike our first visit, which was quite wonderful, this time Grumpy waited on us.My first mistake was asking for an earl grey tea with simple syrup. He told me only plain tea was permitted 🧐🤣. Then, after we each ordered our beverages, as we did on our first visit, Grumps rudely made clear that we were NOT spending enough money. After sharing our frustration and surprise, we ultimately decided to leave (and post this review). The sad part is had GrumpyPants kindly explained that we needed to order a specific minimum, we would have happily done so. We were unaware of a minimum. Now it makes sense the surrounding eateries are at capacity, while The Edgar has maybe 3 patrons. First timers, I’d assume.
I and two other people came at 3pm on Sunday for a coffee chat. We each ordered a coffee. The waitress suggested we order cake, but we said maybe later. 10 minutes later she asked us again, again at 20 minutes, and after a half hour she said she needed that table for a reservation. We offered to move (there were at least 8 empty tables, at 3:30pm on a Sunday) but she said that wasnt good enough. So we paid up and left. I will never go back - its a CAFE, but they wont allow you to order just a coffee? Very poor customer service.
Ridiculous! Ive never encountered such a rude owner. Some ancient Italian grandpa! Came over to my boyfriend and me after we had finished our meal and were sharing a kiss (nothing R-rated, just kisses) and rudely announced this is a public place!Im sorry, this is a public place in the 21st century New York City, not the Republic of Gilead! So if youre gonna shame your customers for kissing, maybe open a cafe in some backward, repressive country where women wear sacks over their bodies.Disgusting!Food was mediocre. Waitress was very nice. The place was empty. Now I know why. You have no regulars. Who would want to come back to such lack of hospitality!!!
Such a fabulous place to eat! Friendly staff that makes you feel like family. Authentic and delicious with a perfect atmosphere combined with a little bit of history behind the place. Owner made sure to personally interact with every table. Our only regret is that we didnt try the cake. Also its no longer cash-only!!!
TLDR: GO ELSEWHERE. rude owner. dont spend your money in a place that doesnt care about treating customers with minimum respect.I thought this was going to be my new cafe to go to but despite the spaciousness, sweet servers and good coffee, it is not worth dealing with the rude owner. The servers were great and very attentive; coffee was solid. But, the owner kept stopping by our table and staring without talking to us or saying something to the server while pointing to our table. The cafe had only 2-3 other customers at a time (and plenty of space!), we had already ordered and we were not even talking. If the owner didnt like us studying there for 2+ hours, he couldve asked us to leave instead of yelling it indirectly to the cafe.
Omg, the owner of this place is mean!!! His food is overpriced and it are so tiny! I ordered a bagel with smoked salmon and cream cheese. The bagel was the size of a mini bagel and I paid $16!!!! Also, hes so rude to the staff. He talks to them like if they are slaves!!!
I eat there regularly on Sunday mornings; I live nearby, like their early opening time, 8:00 am. The food is excellent, the service attentive and very pleasant. The owner is an elderly Italian gentleman, very old school, who has been present every time Ive eaten there, from 8:00 am on, Ive been told that hes there all day every day. Hes been consistently pleasant to me, Ive never seen him or the servers behave rudely to any customer, in the many times Ive eaten there.
After quietly and politely pointing out that the beef carpaccio was brown and then frozen in the middle, the owner came out and snapped at us in front of everyone. He proceeded to argue with my husband well within 6 feet with his mask slipping down under his nose.Rude. Negligent. Awful. Avoid.
Ive gone here for years. The food is excellent, but lately, the service has deteriorated. I think its caught on more in the neighborhood and the weekends are impossible. They have one (or maybe two) waitstaff and one cook in back. Its not enough to handle a weekend crowd such as they are getting. Too bad, as I loved this place. All the old waitresses are gone, but I dont think its their fault, I think they need more help in the back.
Stopped in here with two friends to pass the time and cool off. Arrived around 4 pm on a Saturday. Ordered an iced coffee, which tasted like regular drip coffee with ice. The owner was staring at us the whole time, clearly wondering if we were going to order something besides just coffee. There were maybe 4 other people in the place, so plenty of tables were unused. Im not surprised why.
Great place for breakfast the eggs are amazing. The portions are extremely generous and the staff are extremely polite and helpful. The decor is quirky with pictures and art work of Edgar Allen Poe adorning the walls. The place has moved as it was originally below Allen Poes home.
An extremely charming little cafe, named for Edgar Allan Poe. Stopped in for breakfast during a snow storm and was pleasantly surprised. The service was excellent, my eggs were over cooked, but the whole grain toast was great. A very pleasant visit for a snowy winter morning.
I will never step foot in this restaurant. It was the worst customer service experience I ever had. I ordered a tea. I did not like it and asked if I could get something else instead. I thought that wouldnt be a problem since every other restaurant Ive ever been to, including Starbucks, would just go get something else.Nope! Not here. The waitress kept saying she couldnt do it. Finally she brought over the boss/owner/manager who might be the rudest person Ive ever met. He started yelling at me and asked what was he supposed to do, just throw it away and lose money? I didnt realize a bag of tea was the same price as a brick of gold. I have never been yelled at like that by a man. I told him that he was being rude and he basically told me to leave.Im upset and I wouldnt recommend anyone to ever go in here. I dont want any other woman to feel disrespected just like I was.Im unhappy to see that other people had bad customer service experiences, but at least I wasnt the only one.
A friend of mine and I went to Edgars after seeing Tales of Hoffman at the Met. It was a hike from Lincoln Center to 91st and Amsterdam Avenue, but when we got there, it was worth every moment. There are so many things on the menu, its difficult to choose, but I finally settled for an Edgars Salad, which was a lot of fresh salad mixings with walnuts. It was so good, I couldnt finish it all. My friend had a different salad and we shared Brishetta as well. Its a good place to know about, thats for sure!
The owner was incredibly disrespectful. I ordered a sparkling water and was about to order food but he kicked me out after a bit because apparently what I ordered was not enough. The place was absolutely empty! So apart from rude it was completely irrational. Please go to another place where you are treated the way you should.
When the first Starbucks opened up on the Upper West Side -- that was on Broadway & 87th St. -- many years back, a lot of us in the neighborhood assumed that meant doom for Edgars.on 84th off Broadway. It didnt. Oh, Edgars has had to move a few blocks uptown and over to Amsterdam, but its the same old place. Still great coffee and a huge selection of very good pastries, and still run by the same wonderful guy, with whom you can discuss baseball even though hes a Mets fan.
This is a Gem of an UWS restaurant! Edgar Allen Poe inspired the decor... the soups and salads are exceptional, the Italian dishes are wonderful, great pizza, very tasty sandwiches, coffees, teas, and desserts are world class. Benedetto is the owner in residence who cares deeply about his guests and the quality of the food... and on Friday and Saturday night solo jazz guitar is featured starting at 8:30pm.
Super fresh bruschetta, delicious hearty pasta fagioli soup, tasty smoked tuna tartare salad. Husband had the quiche and chocolate mousse cheesecake, enjoyed them a lot. Great date atmosphere between the music, ambience and charm. Been here many times over the years, always delightful.
Fresh, familiar feeling, old school & old world Cafe. Those folks complaining absolutely had it coming. He runs a great place & is very caring to his customers and his long serving staff. Not his fault the snowflakes expect to be catered to by the entire world. If you want internet and elevator music you cant be too far from Starbucks.
Want to fear for your physical safety under intimidation from the owner? This place is for you!Dear owner: seek help, before your aggression manifests in a physical altercation that lands you in jail for assault.---Came here around 8:30 on a Monday night for an informal business meeting, I arrived first and as it wasnt clear if there was table service or not I went up to the counter and ordered a coffee and found my way to a table to wait for the other person.A few minutes go buy and I see the coffee sitting on the counter, I go back up to pay and out of the shadows comes a man aggressively moving towards me and yelling:Owner: What do you want!?Me: I, uh, ordered coffee?Owner: What do you want?!Me: That? right there? (*gesturing at the coffee*), I ordered it and I need to get it and pay?At this point, I surmised this man was the owner. Although I was still baffled as to why he appeared to be picking a fight with me (Im a quiet, inoffensive, mild-mannered guy).Owner: No laptops outside! Now, I didnt have a laptop out. I supposed we might want to reference something on a screen, but he continued:Owner: Get out!Me: Are laptops allowed inside?Owner: Get out!! (*gestures in my face to leave*)Me: Ok, can I pay for my coffee?Owner: Get out!!! (*waves away the poor lady working there who was trying to give me my coffee*)Me: Ok, fine.I left and went to Starbucks. I cant recall a time where Ive felt as physically threatened to the same degree and Ive walked down my fair share of dark alleys.

2022-04-13Fabulous Cafe which is named for Edgar Allan Poe. Lovely, friendly staff. The interior is charming. The desserts are downright evil! . If you need a chocolate fix, look no further. They are dog friendly. They brought my dog a water bowl while I enjoyed my latte, which also looked like dessert...

2022-07-21It makes me sad to put a “bad review” on a business that has history to this city but I feel like it’s worth mentioning. Most important:The owner is very rude. He is very rushed for customers to order. I was sitting with my friend and he started yelling at a customer for not ordering right away (the customer kept repeating that he was waiting for someone) the owner started speaking on the low disrespectfully. (The person’s Friend walked in right after, very awkward. Owner did not apologize) this made our experience very uncomfortable. On the other hand:These place has great variety of desserts, their food menu also looks great. However, they do have very strict rules about each customer spending more than 5 dollars (which I sort of understand, and there is barely anything worth less than 5 dollars anyway) as well as a ***No Laptop or tablet devices allowed*** which is good to know before you go planning on getting work done. The staff was kind, but the owner’s energy made me not want to come back here again.

2022-06-19We’ve been coming here for 8 years and just love it. Great local neighborhood place that makes you feel like you took a short trip to Italy for the day. The owner Benny has been so friendly to our family and watched my daughter grow up. They are very family friendly here and accommodating to kids.Great for brunch or Dinner with all fresh ingredients and affordable prices. We are gluten free and there are a ton of options here for GF including bread, pasta and deserts!

2022-02-21Had a great lunch at Edgar’s yesterday. Large menu with many yummy options, had a tough time choosing just one thing! So many desserts as well! I got the key lime pie and it was delicious. Waitresses were so kind and welcoming. Will be back to try something new soon!

2022-06-17Our favorite restaurant in the neighborhood by a mile. Everyone that works here is super warm and friendly and we feel at home. Cute decor, delicious pastries, a slow, calm European vibe, and good wines. Great date spot! The veggie pizza is absolutely amazing - must try!We see negative reviews here of folks thinking this is a coffee shop where you buy a coffee and sit for hours with a laptop. Guys, this is a restaurant, not your work from home alternative.

2022-05-13Horrible experience.I went there once with my friend and ordered a cappuccino. The manager, Pam, was very particular that we pay in cash, so we did and left a tip (I now wonder why)A few days later, I had my parents visiting the city. I had asked my Mom to wait at the cafe until I come back from the laundry. When I got back I saw her flustered waiting for me outside the cafe. I asked her why is she not in the cafe. Apparently, the manager wanted my Mom to pay for her cappuccino in cash (which is fine) and also demanded that she order for at least 5 dollars (which is fine again). When the bill arrived, after ordering extra cookies, the manager did not bother to bring back the change. When asked for it, she got the remaining amount and demanded that she pay for the tip right away and left only after she got the tip. I’m glad that was the extent to which her demands went. u2028I’m not sure how consistent the service is with the above experience but I’m pretty sure it’d be different if you walk in as a group or with a male friend.0/5 for cafe service.

2022-07-12Incredible breakfast spot! The waitress has been there forever and is super sweet. The theme being of Edgar Allen Poe is really weird but it’s well decorated.I recommend the French toast!NOTE you cannot come here to work, strict no laptop policy.

2022-06-08The owner is beyond nasty to waitstaff. Came here to celebrate a friend’s birthday and while the food was great, the owner treated a new waitress atrociously. He screamed and yelled at her, publicly, over little things and made for a very uncomfortable experience for everyone. I tipped well and assured her she was doing a wonderful job when she came to the table almost in tears. My heart goes out to her and I hope she quits - what a horrible way to treat another human being who is trying their hardest! I won’t be returning.
