Nice location, good prices and decent portions. The service isn’t the greatest, appears to be family owned, but they don’t check on you or get refills or anything for your drinks. I wasn’t overly impressed, but then the food came. I had the Enchiladas 3 ways special which was awesome and my wife had a combo plate which was also very nice. I don’t live in Buffalo but I go down a couple times a year, this is definitely a place I’ll return to on my next visit.
First thing I liked about the place was interior design which was also accompanied with music: so Mexican so Cozy. Staff are not good, they are great. Very friendly and polite. The food was Awsome for quality and quantity and the price. I dont remember the name of food but it had rice beans steak and chicken with taste cheese sauce ( I added the picture). It is not in my way but I may go again with my friends if some of them has a car.
Mexican staff and menu is genuine, not like Taco Bell situation. Consistently good food, with nice combos and a large menu to choose from. I cant handle super spicy food, and there are selections that are fine for me, plus you can ask the staff for advice. Quick service, and also fun decor.
That was horrible -my girlfriend after we left. The appetizer was cold and the tortillas arrived ripped. Both of our entrees were much smaller than expected. Chimichanga had very little meat, made to look bigger by a pile of sour cream and a large puddle of rather unseasoned beans. Also, you need to bring the check to the front. You will not be told this. Our experience explains why it was almost completely empty in the dinning area.
The waiter was little rude, never explain correctly what we asked on the menu when try again ask him again he replied that he already told us. After the meal Never bring napkins or fill the soda (refills are included on the price) Then I expect a real burrito not a flat one, suppose to have rice, beans and the meat inside for outside the guacamole, onions and pepper. They bring a big plantilla with half spoon rice, half of one half spoon of beans 2 little pieces like 1 inch each of meat inside, for outside the guacamole was something watering green stuff (really not Guacamole) for $11, sorry but for that price I get better food on Chipotle or Taco Bell...Others Mexican restaurants are better than that. 😞 Sorry
I have been coming to El Palenque for years. Usually I have to order a side of rice with my choice of foodas they default to only serving beans with the menu item. Not all but for the ones I like. I ordered the Tacos de Birria and wa very disappointed. After having the same at another place. They were not dipped in Birria then fried over the grill top as they should be. The queso dip was runny. I hope the food quality improves. Ill still come over for margaritas.
Our female server was rude and in a rush to take our order. It was 2 o’clock today 8/26/20. There was not one lunch special that included shrimp. I am a pescatarian and cannot eat meat or chicken for health/digestive/medical issues. I was told I could not substitute shrimp instead of the chicken or add shrimp to the lunch mushroom entree as shrimp is expensive. I am well aware of this and was willing to pay the extra $$. I had no choice but to order off the dinner menu that was double the price. There was a mini taco shell salad that came with the meal that consisted of lettuce, a slice of tomato and some type of guacamole mixture that was already turning brown. The taco shell was stale. When I mentioned it to our server she said, oh you are not supposed to eat that, THE SMALL SHELL IS INEDIBLE. You are only to eat the large taco shells. This was not stated on the menu or stated when the dish was served. I have never heard that the salad served in a mini taco bowl was inedible! I asked for a side of rice instead. I thought the server would take something off our bill as the rice side was $3.00. When we cashed out, I complained to the gentleman as we were cashing out and he stated that the server was the owner. NO EXCUSES!!! I will never go back to this restaurant again due to the poor service and stale food. In today’s economy, I always tip 20%, not today. I only tipped 15% based on the service and stale food. As we were walking out I heard them talking about me in Spanish which I understand. So rude! No apology from the owner/server for the bad service or stale food. Very disappointed in our lunch today.
Food was decent. Service was ok...but the server was very annoyed when I needed more time to order and when I asked a question on the menu. She brought us what we needed. My husband did really like the fajitas! They had great flavor. I had some kind of Grande plate. It was good... but everything tastes the same. The enchildas tasted like the taco...the other two things were similar. I didnt get a margarita tonight...but Ive had them there before. They are giant and yummy!
1- Horrible service; waitress walked away as soon as she would put something on the table. The waitress never asked if she could get anything. If the waitress doesn’t ask how the food is... obviously it’s not a good place to eat because they don’t care about quality.2- Another server brought me the wrong ticket after having to get up to request the ticket due to lack of service. I could not tell the ticket was incorrect because all I received were amounts with no description. The server had to chase me as I was walking out to insist on me running my credit card again. I understand that people make mistakes but off the back, he should have been apologetic and approached the situation better.3- Food was not up to par; certainly not authentic. Fried food was soggy. The chips were stale. The margarita was a pre-mix from a supermarket. On a side note- menu was extremely long and too many options.I am not one to typically write reviews but it irritated me that I was offering my constructive criticism to three employees and each employee became offensive. This is a place of service. Customer service is key so you should always want to know what your customers think to always progress from complacency.Just my recommendation... take a hard pass.
The servers are friendly, the food is good and plentiful, and the lunch prices especially rock. I dont love the dinner prices for the value, but when I get an appetizer and split an entree with my husband, thats a perfect amount of food for both of us for dinner. I ate here all the time for lunch as a vegetarian because it was close to work and the price was right. Now that Im not vegetarian, Ive branched out to their other dishes and those are tasty too. Last visit I wasnt feeling anything heavy, so I ordered the tortilla soup. Holy freaking moly, this is the best chicken tortilla soup I have ever had!!! Ive had a lot, as the very first restaurant I worked at had a pretty good one, and ever since I moved away Ive been looking for a replacement. This one blows it out of the water. So very good. I would be back anyways because its a good restaurant, but Ill definitely be making special visits just for their tortilla soup. Try it!
This is a family type restaurant, casual and friendly. Large standard Mexican restaurant menu and the food is very good. We try and stop for lunch when we are on the area and have never been disappointed. The burritos are great and they offer a good selection of combo plates for lunch. Prices are reasonable.
It really baffles me as to why there are any bad reviews here... We found this gem on doordash , and its the only place Ive found with a really amazing Mexican food around here. We decided to eat in house a few weeks ago and I was so Happy to see that the environment was cozy, and clean and the staff were very friendly. It wasnt that busy, and I dont understand this because we have had perfect service every time. And delicious food!!! And Im really picky about my food and environment
We have been going here for years and this was formerly a 5 star for me. Last visit a week ago, my chicken and shrimp fajitas, which used to be loaded with deliciously scorched green peppers and onions, had almost no veggies. Instead, it came with what I would say was 1/2 of one pepper and 3-4 slivers of onion. My husbands fish meal, which he orders every single time, was also smaller... He normally takes home half. This, time, he ate his usual amount and the plate was almost empty. Im not exaggerating. I mentioned it to the server. She agreed with me about the fajitas, but no action. Denied the fish meal was smaller. 3 stars are for the flavour of the food overall and the delicious complimentary salsa and freshly prepared tortilla chips. However, doubtful well return. What a shame!
They have good food however, the portions are small and you dont get rice and beans on every plate. The prices are pretty high for the amount of food you get. The waiter was nice but we had to keep asking for refills even though anyone would know we needed them. Might go back.
Go Here To Get Annoyed by rude and angry behaviour of staff. Looked like nice Mexican restaurant. The food was delicious. But ... the waiter got our order wrong twice and wouldnt accept his mistake. Another waiter who we mentioned this to wouldnt give a hoot about it claiming he didnt take the order and therefore he does NOT care. He became visibly angry, mumbled something in Spanish. What he said and tone was not polite. When I paid the bill I didnt add a tip because of the terrible attitude of the waiters. This made the cashier angry and he asked us to leave the restaurant. Sure we were leaving but rather upset by the behavior of the entire staff. I have tried reaching Lily who I believe is the manager there, but she is never available. I am surprised this place has not been shut down. Keep away from this place.
Not my favorite Mexican restaurant but it is okay. I think we just had a bad server who neglected us.. The foods flavor was great! Only issue was the portions were so small for the price. The entres either came with rice OR beans. Not both. My lime margarita tasted like the bottle mixer stuff you buy in the store.
Probably the fastest, cheapest, best Mexican food in Buffalo. Ill be honest, the tables are always sticky and first time I went in I was skeptical but the excellent quality of the food keeps us coming back! Never ordered a bad dish. Prices are low, portions are big, and service is fast fast fast! We joke that they must know what we want before we walk in the door theyre so fast!
Service is extremely poor, and the food quality matches the service...very poor! The chicken wasnt fresh at all, and seemed like frozen food just warmed up in a microwave. Fried ice cream wasnt fried but just regular ice cream served.... disappointing!! To add to that the staff is extremely rude and literally try to bully you to tip more even though service is third class!! Piece of advice....do not go here as theres plenty of good places around Buffalo you can go to and enjoy much better food!
First off, the menu had left over food on it. We got an attitude when we asked to have it cleaned. The server was totally rude overall. The food was cold. We one of the plates taken away and they still wanted to charge for it overall a bad experience. I will not ever go there again. Also the bathroom had a pool of urine on the floor. The health department should close this place down. However the Corona beer was good. It was the only thing I we enjoyed.
Awful experience. What ever you do do not order the #33. It’s an anemic dish, no sides, not even garnish. The flavor was weak and it was served lukewarm at best. The service was below subpar. It was as if my server had no idea how to describe what was on the menu.Cleanliness was questionable, I’d give it three out of five.To top it all off the cashier verbally tried to bully me into tipping! Not once but three times.., with attitude? It felt like I was in the midst of a comedy. I have a few tip for you.., clear your tables, serve food hot, improve your hospitality and take the #33 off the menu, now!!!!
If you always eat Tex-Mex its time to venture out and try real Mexican food at El Palenque. The ground beef in my tacos was not overcooked so I could actually taste the flavor of the meat. A spoonful of salsa on top of the taco accentuated the meats flavor. I thoroughly enjoyed the carnitas (pork), also flavorful and tender, which was served with rice and refried beans. The refried beans here are amazing; they are seasoned well and have a creamy texture. The menu has a lot of choices including options for children and vegetarians. Dinner portions are large and filling. Excellent takeout customer service too!
Very tasty steak & chicken fajitas for two. Although, kind of pricey for the quantity delivered. Wife & I are not big eaters and we had no problem finishing the entree & wanting more.Past portions were much larger than what we recd this time. Actually looked like a single order.
Wednesday night at 7;30, fast service, hot delicious food within 10 min of order placed. Yummy chips to hold us over.Flexible on my enchilada order and able bodied staff hustling around. Only complaint if I had to make one is no check-up on us after delivery and more napkins. Overall darn good meal!
Used to be a great restaurant. Ive ordered many times in the past. Today I Ordered take out, when I got home I noticed that I did not get what I ordered. I called the restaurant to explain. The man I spoke with was very rude and argued with me that I was wrong and would not fix my order. Im very disappointed with the service and will not return. There are other great options in the area. Also on a side note the appearance of the restaurant has declined over the last few years and it seems like they just dont care to stay current or in business. I will never return and recommend you find somewhere else to eat.
Came her for my sisters birthday. Ambiance was perfect. Almost empty, quiet mariachi music playing softly in the background, quirky decorations. The menu included everyones favorite dish. And chips and salsa were served almost immediately! It was wonderful. The staff was friendly and hospitable. Food was served piping hot, although Ive tasted better. Plus the outside of the restaurant needs some TLC, with an overgrown yard and unruly rose bush. Overall, a solid 4 stars. Thank you, El Palenque!
This place used to be good. NOT anymore.Online menu gave the price of a certain dish as $8.75. I arrived to pick up my order and was charged over $13.00! I inquired and a mature woman at the front counter angrily snapped that the price went up a few months ago and the new price is $11.50. I showed her the online menu and she got even more impatient and visibly furious, arguing that her husband was supposed to call to have that changed. I asked how anyone looking at their online menu is supposed to know about their THIRTY percent price hike, and she simply stomped off.On the walk to my car, I did some quick arithmetic and wondered how tax could take the price from $11.50 to over $13.00, so I went back and asked. They now have -- wait for it -- a take-out fee!The portion itself was an even bigger disappointment. Lots of rice and lettuce, and two pathetic little strips of chicken -- highway robbery with rude treatment. Hard to imagine that they will be in business much longer.
Caught my attention from the blvd, finally tried it, and enjoyed this dig! Ordered a Burrito California, which was no less than excellent! Wouldnt say this place is romantic, but theres intimate seating available for a nice quiet setting. Tableside margaritas, chips, fresh salsa & genuine service - gets 5 star experience from me. Conveniently located nearby to thrifts. Will come back, lots to try!
I love this place and I try to eat here at least once a month, if not every other week. Their food is great, especially the rice and beans (served on most dinner specials as a side.) Food is served on Fiestaware (ladies) and the plates are HOT to the touch.Personally, I recommend the #17 and medium lime (frozen) margarita w/ salt on the rim. (About $22.50 total before tip) Family owned, authentic Mexican...highly recommend.
Place is awful. Went for the lunch special ordered enchiladas, chips, and guac. chips and guac were average, but the enchiladas were very bland and seemed like they just heated a premade enchilada in the microwave. Got charged for queso when we didn’t order it but def still ate it. When we saw the charge we told the waitress we never ordered it and she got frustrated and stormed off. She angrily said “to bad your paying for it” as she left. $9 for queso seems a little outrageous and the fact she gave that attitude was a huge turnoff for me. Definitely not going to this place again. I recommend Papi Grande’s instead that place is mad good
Place went down hill. Food quality is zero chef must not have a clue. See this picture of nachos supreme....presentation is garbage Im hungry I may eat it because Im starving and risk praying to the porcelain gods tomorrow... Shame their prices were always good for good authentic Mexican food. Now youre better off going to mighty sloop-o for Mexican cuisines. Get back on track guys you got a great location id hate to see another restaurant go under.
One of the best Mexican restaurants here in Western New York since Ive last Arizona. Its so hard to find good Mexican food but this is one of the closest youre going to find here in Western New York. Wait staff is relatively friendly. I wish the portion sizes were a little bit bigger. Overall this restaurant is very clean and the food is kind of tasty
Good Mexican food in a city starved for it. Food isnt too expensive and the chips and salsa are delicious. Staff is a bit inattentive and slow. Especially if they are slow. Only saw our waiter once after food was delivered and took forever to get more water. But a decent restaurant
WOW! First word I can describe everything about this place -food,service and decor! Great thing I didnt pay attention to the negative reviews complaining about this place and raving another restaurant (probably the staff of other Mexican restaurants). I have been to Mexico and the food here was amazing! My bf is Mexican and he loved the ambience of the place. The decor gives off a Mexican feeling and I felt cozy! The food was fantastic and I must say better than the authentic Mexican food we get here in Greater Toronto Area that also cost double the price, with that said, El Palenque offers great food for a great price with a great service! I will definitely make the trip to go back and have a meal there :) 15/10 !
We made a reservation for 14. When we arrived they had lost our reservation and didnt have a table for us. They seated us at 4 different tables. The waiter was rude and continuously scolded us for switching seats/tables if we dared get up and socialize with the rest of our party. He shared specials with only half of our tables so half of us couldnt benefit. The food itself was terribly bland. Basically unseasoned ground beef on a tortilla. When the bill arrived, it was a cash register tape with random prices that we had to sit and try to figure out who to assign which to. No bueno.
Been going there for a while and it never disappoints. The guacamole and cheese dip were outstanding and I always get the fajitas. They were excellent as usual. The service was outstanding and they were very nice. Its probably my favorite Mexican restaurant in the area
Love this place. best salsa I have ever eaten...sometimes it can be too spicy...but it is always cold and I love the fresh crisp garlic thats in it. always tastes so fresh. I always get the shrimp quesadilla because it is always flawless. the tortilla is crisp never soggy. we also order the chicken wings which are the best Ive ever eaten! plus I have an old lady crush on the cute waiter with the tattoos! hes adorable and always smells so nice.🤗
Food is good. Restaurant itself is not up to date. Inside and outside look old. There is never a wait. You can order carryout but the drinks for carryout are very small. The food portions are nice though. Not really an expensive place to eat either. Lunch menu items not available the rest of the day eithe. They dont have a large variety of drinks either as there is no bar there. Mostly just beer and not many types. They use a calculator to provide totals. I have paid different totals on lccassions for the same order. Complementary chips sometimes taste old. The sause is awesome though.
This is the first bad review Ive left, I usually try not to. However this place was terrible and nothing redemptive about it. Service was very slow, brought out the wrong order then tried to tell me its what I ordered. Both our orders were bla at best. Carnitas were tough dry chunks of fat and over cooked tough grizzel. Beef in tacos/burrito were flavorless and cold. The beans were watery and terrible, guac a strange discoloration as if very old perhaps? Freezing cold inside with leaky roof. Small portions for price. Salsa was good tho.
I drove all the way from Canada to have some authentic Mexican food. Weve been coming to this location for about 15 years, about 10 times per year. Over the past two years theres been a bit of decline in the quality of the food, but still good, or else we would not still visit. I always order a couple orders of Chile Rellenos to take home, after weve enjoyed our meal. I was very unpleasantly surprised this time when I got home to discover the pathetic dish that I payed for. Its obvious they didnt have enough chiles, so instead of being honest, they cut them in half, and tried to pass it off as a full meal. So, half the Chile, very little meat, and almost no sauce. Im very disappointed, seeing as weve been a loyal customer for several years. As I said, I drive from Canada, so its not like I could have returned them, and get my money back. Im writing this, so that hopefully this will not happen again, and those preparing the food will have a little bit more integrity.
Rude. Rude. Rude. The staff, and the waitress we had that bordered on hostle. The food used to be amazing - now not so much. They charged a significant fee for a side of sour cream and guacamole which really is more of a condiment. Never going back. Never. Ever. Plenty of amazing food here in Buffalo with staff that are friendly and welcoming to waste my time and money here.
Came in, got seated and they forgot about us. We waited 20 minutes with no one to take our order so we got fed up and left. 3 servers behind the counter with their thumb up their butts. I get better customer service at an abandoned gas station. At least there you might find a homeless man to ask you for change, but certainly more interaction than their servers would give you.
Ordered. First come the drinks. No straw. Not a big deal, but we saw three different waiters, the last of which came unequipped, so I could never ask for a straw. Then comes the food.Order is completely off. Reorder.Comes back, hard shell taco is FLAT.Crunch it into sandwich form essentially, bite in, explodes. One napkin, which is used instantly, forcing me to wash my hands off in the bathroom. Again, we didnt see the waiter after this so I couldnt get any extras to help me neatly mop up the slop that was left. The rest of the food was just uninteresting.Other times Ive gone its just been the same bland meals, and this experience was downright disgraceful.
The servers could be a little friendlier and I noticed that all of the employees were of Hispanic decent which makes me wonder about discrimination within their hiring practice. The food was very good and waiting time was reasonable The facade of the building could use some improvement make it more welcoming from the street view.
Long wait, table of 7 was seated seconds before us. Their chips were brought, drinks were served and order was placed and we hadnt even had a waiter come to our table to greet us. Clearly tips from a large order were more important than customer service. We got up and left. Never coming back here again.
The food here is good I have no complaints on that part but the order taker (an older woman ) is very impatient and not too polite I’ve come here a few times and everytime I’m very polite and it never fails she isn’t I felt rushed while ordering and she treated me as if she did not want my service just completely rushed me out didn’t even hand me my bag of food properly the only reason I still come back is because the rest of the staff is kind and the food is really great ❗️
One of the worst experiences up until this point:My coworkers and I have loved this restaurant up until this point. As frequent visitors are food was always hot, fresh, and delicious. However, when you call to explain to them that this time your order is wrong, they tell you to bring it back to fix it. We order on our lunch breaks and bring it back to our office. We do not have the time to bring it back for you to fix your mistake. Also, when you order something and add something on, and even possibly pay for it, they forget to add it, then instead of offering to fix their mistake, they tell you well you need to pay more. Also, when you find a hair in your food, and explain this to them, they treat you poorly, tell you it is your fault and hang up on you. Lets just say it takes one time to eliminate all the great times we had. I believe we will be finding somewhere else to go out and eat, instead of this place. Customer Service should be on the top of your list since customers drive your business. Hopefully when we get in contact with the owner, things will change
The service is appalling. Everyone waits forever to get a table and then the waiter is surly. The Margaritas were terrible, made with a horrible green margarita mix that was sickly sweet. Really what does it take to mix with fresh ingredients. The food was average, but when there is little or no competition, what can you expect.
Ive always had a great time at El Palenque. Unfortunately, my most recent visit left me the most dissatisfying experience at any restaurants in my life time. An old server named Peter was just absolutely terrible. I understand that it is possible for anyone to have a terrible day at work but the way he treated my friends and I was very demeaning and uncomfortable. His attitude alone inspired me to write this review and it simply ruined all the good memories and the food I have experienced at this restaurant. I did try to raise my concern to the manager but I was not able to find a manager at the time; I also did not want to waste more time to wait for a manager to show up and have this server mumbling in Spanish while staring at us far away. I do not see myself returning to this restaurant any time soon.
Myself and my coworkers ordered for delivery. We all got the chicken quesadillas. We do not believe the salsa on top was salsa, as it looked and tasted like marinara sauce. If it was salsa I have no idea how it tasted like this. This was all 7 of our quesadillas. Someone ordered a side of chips and salsa. This salsa tasted completely different than the sauce on the quesadillas and was actually pretty good. I wish that this salsa was on the quesadillas.
So decided to get takeout from this terrible place. 1)They got our order wrong. 2) Both me and my fiancé‘s food was tasteless. My dog didn’t even want to eat this. The only thing that was actually good was the sour cream they gave me. And that was probably from Walmart so thank you Walmart for providing me with some yummy sour cream. Now I understand why we went there and there was no customers. I’m scared that I might get food poisoning.
A couple years ago i would have given this place 5 stars. Now the food isnt as good, and the service is terrible. Went there and waited over 20 minutes for chips n salsa. After we ordered our drinks it took at least 10 to 15 minutes to get them. After we ordered our food it took another 45minutes or so to get. Food came just as we were ready to get up and leave. Place wasnt even busy, just had a couple people. I dont understand why the wait for what USED to be great food, but now mediocre. Places like La Galera are packed and the chips and salsa keep coming, and dont.need to ask for a pop refill. If El Pukincaca dont get thier act together theyll be our of business. Other mexican restaurants put this place to shame. Anybody who gave this place 5 stars dont get out much.
Horrible service. This was my first time in NY, wanted to eat Mexican, I chose this placed based on the good reviews but left very disappointed. I placed my order thru phone 15 minutes before my arrival time. When I get there, to my surprise the cook had not even started my order. The restuarant was currently serving 2 tables. The cashier apologized and said that he was playing multiple roles and said that management expected him to run the show. I waited another additional 15 minutes for my food. During this time the cook and cashiers behavior was very unprofessional, they cursed at each other, insulted each other in vulgar maner, yelled at each other to hurry up. After witnessing this poor behavior my food is finally handed to me, my rice was burnt, was extra fried, and my tacos were so shamefully put together. Meat was over seasoned, and the tacos literally had about 2-3 stips of meat placed on them. The cilantro and cebolla where slapped onto so careless that they were not even placed inside the tacos. I showed my dinner box to the cashier, he again apologized, said this is what I have to deal with on a day to day basis went back to the cook, argued some more then finally came back with my plate. So disappointed in you Palenque.
Great food. I repeat: Great Food! In fact, the food is so good it almost makes the cheap decor and cramped seating bearable. I would not recommend taking a family with kids on a Friday or saturday. There are a lot of college age kids who frequent the place who are loud and obnoxious. This is amplified by the cramped seating. At the end of the day I still give it ★★★★ out of five. The food is that good.
Just wondering what happened here. Used to love the food and Modelo on tap. Theyre no longer serving any draft beer. The chips that were delivered to the table tasted stale, like they were fried in rancid grease. The chicken fajitas were nowhere near as tasty as they used to be. Did someone forgot to marinate/season the chicken? Disappointed.
We went to this restaurant several times and have ordered take out several time also. My daughter is a vegetarian. They have always accommodated her. Tonight when I called to order take out of the two of us and stated that she is vegetarian, I was told flat out we dont change orders. I told him, fine..then I will order from somewhere else, and hung up. They have lost not only my business, but all of my family members and friends. If you are not willing to accommodate someone with a special diet, then you will not succeed. This has never happened before. I hope they realize that one of the employees just ruining their business.
The salsa is very spicy & Delicious the food is pretty good (besides the last time I went, everything was wrong the server did not listen or did not understand English & was the only server/cashier there) the service is by far the worst in any Mexican restaurant I have been to. I will not go again. Its really unfortunate because it has such great potential.
Good mexican food. You are served chips and salsa right away and free of charge. Then its down to picking from the wide variety of menu items. Chicken, beef, pork, most come with rice and beans. Nice selection to choose from. Margaritas, mexican beers. Calling to take out can be challenging because they dont always answer the phone right away but if you do get through its worth it.
So I put aside the negative reviews, and tried it. Twice.. BOTH times, BIG mistake!! Dingy.. Clearly they were short staffed and busy (visit #1).. The menus were tossed onto our table. It took another 15 minutes to get Salsa & chips, and our drink order taken. Another 10 for the drinks to arrive, and 10 more for our order to be taken. The Chili Rellenos?? FULL of seeds.. The dining area on the way to the restrooms? ALL tables were loaded with dirty dishes. Flies buzzing around..You know what flies are doing when they land on food? Theyre NOT eating, theyre laying eggs.. Time #2.. Waited 15 minutrs to be acknowledged after being seated. I got up and left. Wont go there again until I see how they rate with the Health Department & their customer service improves..
I venture to El Palinque at least once every couple weeks and we are always rewarded with excellent service. The food comes out hot and fresh and is reasonably priced. If you come during lunchtime you can get a lunch special around $5. Most meals will run anywhere from $6-12 bucks. This place also has some of the biggest margaritas around. If you get a large margarita expect to drink out of a fishbowl. In addition, food is served fast. This place is far from fine dining and can be considered just short of a dive, but its a fantastic value and fairly authentic. Much better than the Dennys that use to be in that location. Id compare it to La Tolteca but with the same/or better taste and a better price. You shouldnt be disappointed.
We waited 20 minutes before i had to flag down a server to take our order. Once the order was in the only time we saw our server again was because i had to flag him down to get more chips. I even had to go to the register to retrieve the bill. The food was even below average. Will never go here again.
The only reason I give one star is for the over worked waitress. Lunch on January 17th 2017 our whole table got food poisoning. The dish I had looked frozen reheated. But others had good looking dishes. 10 hours later we are all very sick. I missed work the next day. First time in almost a year. I hope they fix this problem before anyone ends up in the hospital.
The male host kid was constantly on his cell phone. Our server was confused with his computer. We waited a good solid 2 minutes for him to try to figure it out. I walked over to the host kid who was still on his phone. He said that the server was good and he would figure it out. It took everything in me not to go irate on this dandruff headed unwashed hair for 9 months lookin little twerp and smack him upside his head. He finally got off his phone and assisted his coworker. Also, the food was very basic. The salad was just chopped iceberg lettuce. And my 3 fish tacos comprised of 2 tacos having fish in them and chopped iceberg lettuce with 6 shreds of white cheese in a seperate dish.Very disappointing. Also a pitcher of margarita is 22 not 13 like most places.P.s. no music or televisions were on. I played regional mexican music on my phone. Thank you pandora.
I don’t know how this place is still even in business! I don’t know what put me off more, the fact that I could watch it raining inside through the holes in the roof or that they argued with me about what I ordered because they brought the wrong thing. The carnitas were quite possibly the worst I’ve had and all of western New York. They were fatty and chewy and gross. DO NOT RECOMMEND
The food is great. The service is horrible. Waiters that are too lazy to go around the table to pick up plates and ask you to hand them to th before jabbing you in the side with the end of the fork because they are in such a hurry to get away. Getting up to go to the counter to ask for a refill on your drink is not indicative of good service either.
We have been going to Victors place ( El Palenque ) since he first opened it. We dont go as often anymore. The food nor service is not what it use to be. As usual a new business will come out strong and then as time goes by it gets lazy. This is what I am afraid has happened here. It had such promise at the beginning. You cant tell people how to run their business, but maybe if they read the reviews they might get the message.
I was lied to and cheated in this restaurant. I ordered Camarones A LA Diabla (yes the spicy one) but got Camarones AL Chipotie - its easy to note the difference, the first one other than being really spicy comes with lettuce, tomatoes and avocado while the later comes with beans and tortillas. When I complained they apparently come with the right order in less than 3 minutes- well this is what they did- they kept the same sauce, removed the beans and tortillas and added the salad. When I noticed this and complained- they started talking about new chef, etc etc. Basically this is what they did-1- Get the wrong order to a customer (and mistakes happen its human to make mistakes- just acknowledge and correct them)2- Try to cheat the customer by making the wrong order look like the right one3- Lie to the customer when caught cheating.Way to run a business!!
I live really close to El Palenque and love Mexican food. Over the past 3 years I have dined in this restaurant 6 times. Each time the service was poor and the quality of the food was low. I kept going back because I was hoping they would improve. They have not, it is a complete disappointment. I will not go back EVER! In my opinion there are only two really good Mexican restaurants in the buffalo area. La Tolteca on Transit in Williamsville and La Galleria on Niagara Falls Blvd in Niagara Falls. I love La Tolteca so much I could eat there every day!
Would give zero stars if I could. First time here, got seated immediately and then sat there for over 20 minutes without so much as a well be with you shortly let alone asking what we would like to drink. After they continued waiting on other people and seating others, we just walked out. Never again.
Two friends and I went to el palenque last weekend for the third time. we all thought the food was really good. but their service is poor. our first time there we had a waitress who was really friendly and nice, she knew what she was doing. this time we had an older man, who was not the best. we think we could be a manager or owner. when we first arrived he seemed friendly and took our order. one thing i noticed is he did not make any eye contact with us. when they came back my friends order was wrong and accused her of not knowing what she wanted. we are both fluent in spanish and know the food on the menu..we knew what she ordered and that wasnt it. he was rude, he has terrible people skills. after that whenever he would bring a drink he would slam the glass on the table, really? he has no customer service skills. we liked the food but we might just try to find another place. oh yeah and he charged us double for drinks
Ok I mean the food was good but it took about 40 minutes for our food to come after we ordered it and its not like the place was packed. there was only a few other people in the restaurant and you couldnt find a person to help you if your life depended on it. The place was very disorganized. I do not recommend it.
Horrible service. I called in an order for pick-up and asked if I could get Chorizo on nachos and they stated they cant make changes to the menu. I told them they could charge me extra, they still would not budge. When I got there to pick up my order I stood at the main desk for about 5 minutes while employees were walking around and cleaning things. When someone finally came to the desk I dont think they said more than 3 words as they took my money and handed me my food. I wont be visiting this restaurant again.
We eat here regularly and having lived in Mejico for some time, I can tell you the food is authentic and for the most part delicious. I give 4 stars instead of 5 because my favorite dish, Chili Pobalnos is inconsistent here. We really like and almost always order the Queso Fundido con Chorizo. We are planning on eating here tonight but I won’t be ordering the chili poblano. Follow-up after tonights dinner. WIfe got the chili poblano and it was excellent.
Went there 2 times a week before I had to deal with a very rude server (pet**). His name is mentioned continuously... I asked what is wrong with him to another server, that server said he has a close relationship with the owner...it explains everything...and the owner doesnt give a thing.
Outdated on the way you get checked out. They have to look at the menu to look at the price. Food was very bland and over cooked. They need to work on their customer service. Men’s restroom set up is a bit awkward. Don’t know if it’s for single use or multiple at once.
Waited 15 minutes before being seated, and waited an hour after placing our order, all the while nobody came over to check on us. A table of 5 that came in after us was seated, served, and left before we received our food. Not to mention that nobody was friendly. Not coming back here.
My Fathers favorite Restaurant. REAL Mexican food. Sit down restaurant. Not your mighty taco or Taco Bell. Salsa and chips with every meal, and always some pico o queso o crema...Yayaya!2020 Pandemic Update:Offers hand-off curb side pickup for take out. NO delivery. Salsa and chips are not included with take-out. Tin+ waxboard packaging, bagged in plastic bags.
Thought I would try it for the first time last night with the family worst mistake of my life. Started off by wondering if we seat ourselfs then throwing the menus on the table then took a while for drink. But took LONGER FOR THE FOOD (which wasnt that great) the other Mexico restaurant on transit rd is WAY better
Youd drive by El Palenque without even seeing it (corner of eggert and the blvd in a converted Dennys), but what a pleasant surprise. Authentic, fresh, TASTY Mexican food for super cheap! A hearty dinner is around $9 and their large margaritas are basically served in fishbowls. The decor is full of brightly painted tables and decorations, and everyone is greeted as Senor or Senorita.
Dine at your own risk. I have been to mexican restaurants before and had great memories. That El Palenque at 951 Niagara Falls Blvd in Amherst, NY is horrible. The food was half cold and seemingly old, the service was awful. It was hard to tell if the server was being purposely deceitful or not, given the english language barrier. I cant imagine a good reason to spend another dime art that dump.
Very bad service, the staff does not care & are not welcoming.. Our server after seating us in a cramped table did not show up for 15 minutes. We walked out and he just did not care. Went to another restaurant where they were welcoming and our server was amazing. Will never go back.
Used to come here often. This will be my last visit because I sat here for over an hour before even getting a glass of water. When I mentioned this to the staff they gave me 20% off a marked up check. I spent over 2 hours in the establishment and only ordered a glass of water and a combo meal
Our office has tried ordering from this restaurant twice now, and both times we had multiple orders with missing items, wrong food, etc. Order a lunch special with a quesadilla, a taco, and rice and they forget to put in the quesadilla? Look, it aint rocket surgery, its a lunch order that was called in at 11:30. How can they screw up 4 out of 5 orders two consecutive times? Were done with them and will never order from them again.
We were sitting there for 20mins. None of servers was trying to approach us to take an order. We called them many times. But we only received an ignorance return. Customers came after us had their foods before us. Maybe they are racial because we are asians. Terrible place. Do not expect to feel welcome in this place.
A friend invited me to eat dinner at this restaurant my soft taco was dripping in what tasted like old dish water my son even took a bite and said mom dont eat it they did something to it i should take the plate and go to the hospital to go get checked ugh i asked to speak to the owner but they said he wasnt in ugh im so disgusted food should be enjoyable without be worried of being poisoned

2022-04-10The food and drinks available are very affordable but Im used to slightly bigger portions. A little more beans and rice would be nice. Salsa and chips were very good, spicy! I recommend getting chicken entrees here. Vegetarian options were bland unfortunately. The wait service was very attentive and fast delivery of orders. Lots of seating for big parties too.

2022-05-06I will give one star for the nice waitress we had. But other than that, I would give negative stars if I could. You can’t make a reservation so we had to wait for almost an hour in line to get a table, ok, we chose to wait so whatever. Then we ordered drinks and they tasted like kool aid with ice, the most bland margaritas I’ve ever had. I ordered fish tacos and birria tacos, I swear to god a 5 year old could cook something better. It was barely edible. Not only that but the birria tacos had basically nothing in it other than cilantro and onions (look at the picture). The fish tacos had some sort of ground fish meat in it that I’ve never seen before, looked like cat food or something. No seasoning, no flavor, nothing, it was the same as buying a tortilla at a grocery store and eating it as is. Then we went to pay the bill (which is not itemized so you don’t know what each price corresponds to), and the waitress said we could just not pay separately, it had to be all in one card (we were a party of 4). I’ve been in many bad restaurants and I try to review them based on their strengths too but this one deserves an award for the worst in Buffalo.

2022-06-29The service was terrible and for that alone, I would give it a negative. The food taste good but barely any meat, mostly bell peppers and onions. Went for lunch(12:30pm) and ordered off the lunch menu but was charged dinner prices because I asked for mixed meat. It would have been the same price for 2 meals ( 1 of each ) and I would have mixed it myself with a lot more food. We should have been told once we said lunch special but the waitress didn’t say anything and she only came to the table to bring the food and not again to see if anything was needed. Disgusting and I will not be back

2022-07-20Went here with my husband and mother-in-law, and we had a blast! Everything was fantastic, even the chips and salsa brought to the table before you order. Well seasoned, fantastic portions and excellent staff. Would recommend El Palenque to anyone in the area.

2022-06-02I wonder when the last time the salt and pepper shakers were washed? Sticky greasy caked up mess.Food is mediocre, service was mediocre, waiter never came back to check to see how I was doing, I wanted another beer but couldn’t even flag him down.A good waitstaff person should survey their tables as passing by.Visit was a true disappointment.

2022-03-30Could have added more meat and chicken to their combination fajita dish. For some reason it was very sparse and was mostly composed of bell peppers and onions. For the most part the food was very delicious and the dessert scrumptious.

2022-04-02Just had dinner here and are driving home now. My fiancé and I love Mexican, but this is not good. Watery queso & watery guacamole as starters. Entree included watery beans. I had one bite of fish taco and that was more than enough. Someone got to a fish, salted it, and shredded it to hell. Let me be clear . . . I love fish, but that “overly-fishy” flavor is a dead giveaway that the fish was not cooked to order. I can hear the kitchen staff now with an old, ugly filet . . . “Just put it in the food processor so it looks intentional.” Not. Good.

2022-07-02As others have stated, the staff is friendly but the food does not impress. I went with family and friends and everyone said no flavor, cold or not worth going again.
