The chef surprised us with chicken tostadas which were so delicious. Just the right amount of sweet onion and a warm crispy tortilla 😋. We had chicken chimichangas and the carnitas burrito. The Mexican cream was very delicious. Their Pico de Gallo was super fresh and the guac was amazing as well. Their margarita was refreshing and salty just the way it was meant to be. Our server was very friendly and the indoor space is clean and they are very conscientious of social distancing. Highly recommend and we will definitely be returning soon!!!!
The food is delicious! The best chimichanga I ever had. Im pretty sure all they heard from our table was oohs and ahhs! And to top it off, everyone was so nice! I wish I had pictures to post but the food was devoured before I even thought about taking pics😁. I cant wait to go back!
Fantastic experience, the owner is personable and accommodated us despite it being before 3 pm and the private party that was winding down. He was cordial had a server bring us beverages and fresh tortilla chips and salsa until we could order from the kitchen. The Sangria was excellent.
Ive been here for dine-in and take out and posted a positive review months ago because ive had really great experiences with food and service. yesterday on the other hand was terrible. my bf and I arrived at 3pm right when they opened and we were the only people there. waited a little for the patio to get ready and then ordered a drink and soda. we placed our food order when the waitress brought the drinks. more than an hour later and our food had still not arrived. a large table of guys and two other couples came in after us and BOTH got their orders while we sat with no explanation, no chips and salsa refill, no inquiry about how the drink tasted nothing other than a water refill. we decided to leave and asked to speak with a manager. the female mgr apologized and asked us to wait so she could check what happened in the kitchen. she came back with a male who also apologized and called the waitress over. the waitress claimed that she used an ordering station that malfunctioned. I told her I understand that things happen but she was on the patio multiple times during the hour we waited but decided to go to the 3 other tables while telling us nothing. the mgr nodded but did nothing to address the problem with us so we decided to leave. its not my responsibility to address their staffing problems. I dont know if the problem was poor management, a broken ordering station, an untrained waitstaff or if someone had a problem with us being an interracial couple. I do know that we were surprised and disappointed with the treatment we received from the waitress and lack of resolution from management.
Really great Mexican food. My favorite is the bar sample that comes with spare ribs, short ribs, steak, shrimp, sausage, refried beans, rice, guacamole and a bunch of other additions. God beer and wines. I had a local hazy IPA that tasted great. Wait staff was very friendly. We got seated immediately, no wait for a table.
I want a table without waiting, whenever I come to eat here, so I should not really write this review- but....... it was so delicious! We had dinner at El Sombrero last week. Wow, unbelievable authentic food! Before we could sit down, the owner came over to introduce himself. He gave us some complimentary tacos, to get a feel for his place. They were outstanding. The tacos and sauce they also serve when you set down are all freshly done there. We got a tour of the space for events and eating. It is absolutely beautiful! I am hispanic, and they past my test. I cant wait for my parents to come up. I intend to be a regular. If you want excellent Tex-Mex food, this is your place to go.
That restaurant used to be a good place to go eat, but now worse place, I went there with my family I ordered drinks the server never bring me the drink , when I ask him about my drink, he gave the drink to another table that close to mine, the drink left at the other person for hours, they talked they eat, when the people they didnt ordered that drink, the server took the same drink and gave it to me, thats is very disrespectful, with covid around that should never happen, dont go there they look black people like trash, bad place.
I rate this place 1 out of 5 stars because we came into this restaurant tired and hungry with kids and had to wait for about 50 min for the food to arrive. Over that time they served us nacho chips with salsa two times. I would like to say that the food was not realy bad but the problem was that the people who made an order and came after us for take out order were served first and we with our 2 little kids were waiting for our food for about 50 min. It was like they only serve take out orders and forgot about our order. After 50 minutes of waiting we wanted to cancel our order. Finally the waitress brings the food, (she was very nice to us by the way), but we just asked for boxes to pack the food and leave. I understand that if the restaurant is busy it should take no more than 20 or 30 minutes to serve the food, but not about an hour. The price was also high.
Had dinner last week and it was FANTASTIC!! When you first walk in, you can’t help but be impressed by the gorgeous bar. Enough TV’s if you like sports (which I do) and plenty of seating. Drink menu included red & white sangria (I had the white and it was delicious) as well as a tasty list of tap beer ((Ommegang Nirvana!!). Coconut shrimp appetizer was delicious and set the tone for my chicken chimichangas! We were a party of 15 and everyone left happy. Very nicely done and I’d definitely recommend dining here if you’re in the neighborhood!
I know I’m late to the game because they have been open for a while, but I can honestly say it was well worth the wait, and I will definitely be back! Went on a busy Friday night.. during the dinner rush so I expected to have to wait for a table, but as soon as we walked in and got to the hostess stand they asked us if we would mind being seated at a smaller bar table.. We were seated right away. The service was amazing, the food was not only delicious but beautifully plated as well! The margaritas were to die for, and also discounted because it was national margarita day. I was so impressed with the decor of the restaurant.. the mural on the dining room wall is so pretty! I will be sure to return soon, and to tell everyone I know to go to this hidden gem in Sullivan county!!
Got stuck in traffic on Friday and arrived with a great appetite. My wife and I ordered take out which was ready within a half hour. We took our meal home and it was still at a perfect temperature to eat. Great tostados, salads, steak, fries and broccoli. Can always count on a great meal from El Sombrero!
With all of the reviews I have read. I am very pleased to say, this restaurant had no problem living up to them. The service was very impressive, and as a former waitress it is difficult to impress me. (Resort World could definitely take pointers from them). The food.....was amazing. Off the hook yummy! Overall experience raised the bar for many of the restaurants in Sullivan County. I will go back again.
Very nice place. The owner is super involved. Walks around making sure you are taken care of and happy. I didnt know it existed until now. I would have given 5 stars but I felt that putting lettuce on my flautas made them soggy. Otherwise it was overall great and I would totally go back.
Excellent food, excellent atmosphere. Although, the waitress with the super long hair that wasn’t put back into a pony tail bothered me. The food took a little long to come to our table but you can tell that they’re not throwing things together. They care about how they’re presenting each dish. The lava cake is small, BUT it was so delicious and the perfect amount after a big meal. I had the steak fajitas and it was INCREDIBLE. In my opinion I think there could’ve been less peppers and a wider variety of veggies, but over all the steak was perfect, well cooked and juicy. But with the menu, there are a couple spelling errors. Coming from the grammar police, I think that is a very silly mistake. I came with my family and we were all satisfied with the food and decided that we will DEFINITELY be coming back! Thank you guys! I’m looking forward to coming back!
This is a lovely spot for excellent Mexican food. The owners are gracious and welcoming, and the food and service are excellent. They were willing to customize our drink and food choices - always the sign of a good restaurant. They also have a bar, and serve variety of drinks. They are in the process of opening a larger room, which will be great, as they are very popular on summer weekends. There is ample parking, and the place is clean and well decorated. The only down side is that it tends to get quite noisy, but the quality and value make it well worth your while. I heartily recommend this restaurant!
Awesome place for great cocktails and food. Enjoyed the company of my wife, daughter and future son in law. Had the shrimp cerviche app. And the NY Strip Steak entre. Everyone was very pleased with the quality of the food and the service was 2nd to none. They knocked it out of the park.
The atmosphere, the food, and the interior of the restaurant are all amazing. The Owner came to our table and asked how everything was, and we all told him it was amazing, you could truly see the relief and pride. The food was presented beautifully, and the staff were all very kind and respectable. Our waitress (I didnt get her name, as I showed up to my familys table late) was very attentive and accommodating. The food was incredible, flavorful, and presented a beautifully. We even ordered desert, and my god was it incredible. My girlfriend and I ordered the chocolate lava cake, and it was absolutely incredible. I had to stop her from eating it so i could get a video, and pictures of it.We had such a good time, my father even decided this is our go-to every tuesday. When we left, the owner met us at the door and asked us one more time how everything was and we all again told him it was spectacular. You can tell when a restaurant cares about what it serves, and how it functions. And this owner truly cares, you dont see that too often. I hope they never change.
What an embarrassing experience. I don’t even know where to start. We ordered a $52 pitcher of margaritas as soon as we sat down. 47 minutes later one of our 4 meals showed up. Still no drinks. And the meal they delivered they didn’t know what it was, or who ordered it (how do you not know what the dish is you carried out of the kitchen). Next up 10 min later is the second of 4 meals. They said “who ordered the fajita”. Wow…. It was not even a fajita dish! So they took it back and brought out a fajita that was no longer sizzling. The our watered down $52 pitcher showed up, then the rest of our 4 meals. Take a look at the taco picture! They showed up with one piece of overcooked fish! No toppings, dry, and burnt. It was not a busy weeknight. I asked for a manger but got tired of waiting. What is going on?
We’ve hit El Sombrero at least once a week since they opened a little more than a year ago. At first, there were some service glitches, but the food was always delicious. Well, the service glitches have been worked out, and the food is still delicious. Luis and Annie—the owners—are always on the premises, and the bar staff—particularly Bud, Erica, and Evan—are friendly and knowledgeable. The atmosphere is excellent as well, and the menu is family-friendly. Reservations are recommended on Saturdays.
A few friends and I went here on a whim. After checking out the reviews I was confident we would enjoy our meal and I was not disappointed. Everything, from the guacamole to the margarita to the chips themselves, had a wonderful inherent flavor to them (aside from salt as is common with most Mexican places!). I had the vegetable burrito and it was also quite tasty but I wish it came with rice and beans on the side. The are a few kinks to work out with service. A few things took awhile to get and out server forgot we ordered an appetizer but she was friendly and cleared the table well (this coming from a former server).Overall El Sombrero is definitely a place you want to visit while you’re here in Sullivan County!
I don’t agree with the other reviews. We had a great meal, six of us on a saturday night.and the place was busy5-10 minutes into the evening drinks, within an hour we had eaten and gotten the check. Good food. But my steak fajita could have been closer to medium rare. - don’t overthink it though, definitely be backNice friendly attentive people working here. .
Wow! Lucky to find this place, “the best food we’ve had in a long time” . Family business with so much care and great service. Large portions with great quality, it was just so good and fresh. Gotta make sure to give this place a shot when you’re in the area. What a find!
Very excited about having a real restaurant here. Although we don’t live in the area full time we spend lots of time here every summer for the last 10 years. I must say I’m a bit surprised about the negative reviews my experience was totally different from what those people have described. Let me also note that I am very spoiled when it comes to food having lived in New York City for over 20 years. Before this restaurant opened we had to go to Ellenville if we wanted a nice dinner. Here’s the bottom line: service is good, very attentive. Food is above average and excellent considering the area and compared to the competition. The place is well designed and clean. Food prices are very reasonable. Have I had better Mexican food in my life- yes, did this place meet and exceed my expectations- absolutely.Everyone I came with agreed that we will be back. Nice touch with the owner following up at the end to ask about our experience and to ask for any suggestions on what to improve. Good luck on making this business a long term success!
My husband DJ and I just had the most AMAZING experience at El Sombrero in Rock Hill, NY. The chef Luis and his beautiful wife Annie made us feel at home. The servers were extremely attentive. The food was exquisite..... try the Sombrero Nachos filled with chicken, cheese, beans etc. The main course, with such beautiful presentation, had amazing flavor!! Beautiful restaurant and very warm and inviting. We will be back. Thanks Luis & Annie!
Did not have a good experience. the food tasted like it was not seasoned; my fries were cold and bland. Asked for a piña colada it was watered down with just a lot of whipped cream on top. The only cultural thing about the restaurant is it’s name. Was hoping to enjoy at least something about the new restaurant but sorry guys.
Well the food was great, the organization was terrible. Maybe because we came with 13 people and they might have not been prepared for that. I dont really know. However, customer service was horrible. They were really nice though. I will be going back just not with so many people next time.
Excellent food, nice TexMex decor.........salsa fresh and from experience......delicious! , guacamole fresh but needs more cilantro......meats, shrimp and veggies all good......Mexican Coke a welcome change from regular coke........priced good but you get what you pay for...lot of reviews indicated No or Very poor service........our waiter was great but the staff was shortchanged......we didnt receive tableware for over half and hour and our appetizers were on the table! ....the restaurant, not our waiter needs to address this........and fast......I hope this is not the norm..........Ill be back!
Ok, so Im local and this is the first time my family and I have come here. We ordered the calamari as an appetizer which was delicious, but after that things went downhill. I ordered a grand margarita top shelf, the drink tasted like it came out of the bottle of mixture that they sell at the liquor store (which I have at home) , I politely returned the drink and said what I felt was wrong, our waitress was very polite and patient. Next came our dinner, we ordered a chicken quesadilla, as well as the 16oz strip steak. The quesadilla was good, although the shredded chicken seemed like it came out of the crock pot. The strip steak I ordered medium rare, which was cooked correctly, however the steak was extremely chewy and hard to chew and swallow after already complaining about the maragaerta, and a long island drink that was also clearly not made correctly I was trying to save my husband the embarrassment of complaining about another thing. I waited almost 45min for my meal for it to come out disappointing, this restaurant seemed as though it is a beginner and staff doesnt know or isnt aware how to run it properly not sure if I would return or recommend.
Only came here once for dinner and drinks. I enjoyed the drinks which were appropriately priced. The food was another story. We never received any chips and salsa, even after asking for them, perhaps the wait staff was too busy. The food was a long wait, but I dont have a problem if its worth it. It wasnt. The servings are small, the sides are small or not even included. The sides of pico, guac, etc, were less than 1/4 cup size servings. This was with the most expensive thing on the menu mind you. A meat platter for 2 which was $50... it left me still hungry to say the least. The included 10oz skirt steak requested med-rare turned out to be 5oz and well done. Oh, and the sausage was Italian hot sausage, not chorizo!Feel like theyre pinching expenses everywhere possible which is simply degrading the experience. I wouldnt get food here again personally. Go to Middletown and try one of the authentic Mexican restaurants, youll leave full, happy, and with more money still in your pocket.
Its was my 40th Birthday the owner Luis showed my family and I the most amazing g service his staff and service was beyond our expectations. We will be coming back the food was amazing the drinks. It was an amazing experience. Thank you for making my 40th celebration amazing!
Dinner on a Friday night! We showed up early without reservations and since the bar was packed; we chose to be seated immediately. The space itself is stunning with hand-laid stonework and an amazingWestern desert sunset mural across two walls—all very new, modern, comfortable and sparkling clean. The restaurant also has nice sunset views of the lake across the street (should be very nice for drinks on the large front porch in the summertime!) We ordered drinks (various flavored over-sized margaritas—including a slightly sweet blueberry one) and appetizers (lightly fried calamari, a very smooth guacamole and the most amazing and huge coconut shrimp trio) and they arrived almost immediately after the free nachos and house-made salsa opener.Mains were an enormous chimichanga with salsa verde (along with a chimichurri sauce we asked for extra) and the special Sombrero grilled platter for two piled high with St Louis BBQ ribs, fall-off-the-bone short ribs, marinated mesquite chicken as well as perfectly tender flank steak slices and two hot & spicy fat chorizos along with a cubed mango/cucumber accompaniment! (We took enough home for two more meals!) The waitress assured us that almost all the offerings were fresh not frozen and made in-house including all the sauces. The food was served on stark white plates and platters and had all the pre-requisite “schmears” and garnishes. Beautifully done!We chose to share the stacked-high tiramisu dessert topped with blueberries and strawberries--but are really looking forward to the molten chocolate cake next time! The waitress was so sweet about putting a birthday candle on the tiramisu and making the presentation for us. The bar looks like fun but was still crowded after dinner so we chose to go straight home afterwards; vowing to spend some time there the next time we go.While I had noted one or two less positive reviews here; I cannot for the life of me now think that any one of them still applies to this newly-opened restaurant finally up on its very capable feet and running smoothly at this time. We honestly loved every single bite (even as leftovers later) and found the service and atmosphere perfectly charming. My only suggestion would be to make some effort to lessen the sound level as the areas could be quite noisy (almost wiping out our normal table conversations) when the place was full. Apparently the owners have plans to complete the second phase of the dining spaces shortly and things may quiet down a bit there then. Best wishes for continued success--hoping to return soon!
First time there it was not bad. This time our food was made wrong and had to be remade so it could be eaten. Serve was bad and I cannot even say what the problem was. Drinks was requested and never received. Check had to be changed 2x. Server could just have been having a bad night. Needs to finish serving a table before going on to the next table.
I don’t think people up here know good food they are just happy to get a new restaurant. All the food is seasoned the same. Waiter forgot to bring half the stuff. At least give free dessert to compensate then I wouldn’t give poor review. I’m from the city and know good. You want good Mexican then go to awurtsboro or Ellenville. Sorry guys was hoping for a good new restaurant
This was my first time at El Sombrero. The decor was lovely and that is where my positivity ends. We were seated at 8:00, the first time a server came to the table was 8:15. Chips and salsa were brought to the table. Our order was not taken, a glass of water wasnt even offered!!! Finally at 8:30 the server returned to take our order. A few drinks, an app and entrees were ordered. Another 10 to 15 minutes later our drinks still havent been brought to the table. At this point another server comes to our table to tell us that the computers arent working properly and apologizes for the delay. We are still ok with the issues(Ive worked at restaurants before). Then I ask if we could at least get our drinks(we have been waiting awhile and still NO WATER IN THE EMPTY WATER GLASSES ON THE TABLE!!!) The server says to me, If we bring you your drinks and the computers arent working then its like giving you free drinks!! WHAT????? The least you could do is comp a flippin margarita for the ridiculously awful service that we were getting!! The server was rude about it and we walked out! That is an hour of my time that I will never get back!! It was very disappointing because I was really looking forward to trying the food. Now I will never get that chance because I will never go back there again!
My husband and I have waited and waited for El Sombrero to open, since we love Mexican food. After 3 trips there since the opening, Im saddened by the poor quality of the food! Rice is tasteless, tiny portion of watery refried beans unedible, sweet red sauce on the enchiladas is like nothing Ive every tasted at a Mexican restaurant. Just not good. Nachos were sloppy and although the meat was tasty, they just were so mediocre! Thus far, the only really tasty item Ive had has been the carnitas tacos. I join a previous reviewer to say that the overpowering smell of disinfectant is unbearable, ruining the experience. We REALLY want this place to succeed, but they simply have to get their act together!
New restaurant in town. I will say that the first thing you will smell when you walk in isnt food but rather one of the waitresses heavy heavy cologne. Awful she needs to relax a little bit on that. Table service: first two people brought me to a table, then another person came and gave me water and nachos with a side of salsa, then another person came and gave me a menu and salt and pepper. Then finally the waitress came and asked me for my order. Kind of a strange Arrangement but okay. being the type of person that loves homemade tacos I asked if the tacos came with refried beans and rice. She said No 3 tacos for $10 and refried beans and rice for an extra $4. Which is really ridiculous because in Middletown you can get an entire meal for $10 with the beans and rice. I opted for the chicken fajitas. About 25 minutes later the fajitas came. Very nice presentation. The chicken and vegetables were very good. The pico de gallo on the side was very good. The beans were the most disgusting thing Ive ever had. They came in a shot glass and you needed to either slurp it down or use a spoon. Baby food is thicker than their beans. I wouldnt even feed it to a senior citizen in a nursing home. You could use a straw to eat it. When I did try it, it was nasty. I have no idea what they used but that was not refried beans. The Mexican rice --- unbelievably disappointingly!!! disgusting as well. No flavor at all. Maybe might leave that out for the animals at night time but I wasnt eating it. So for $17 plus a $3 tip I basically got half of a meal that I liked. Tex Mex beans and rice should be OUTSTANDING and a huge component in Tex Mex Food. I lived in California for 10 years and I know a lot about this. If these people want to stay and business they need to get up to speed with those two components alone. Maybe take a visit to Middletown Mexican Restaurant on Route 211 called El Tapatio . Try their beans and rice and then try yours and tell me that theirs isnt better? And also pay attention to their price tags. One third of yours.
Get ready, this is a story about how I came to find god due to the food poisoning I have received. So heres how it went. I got there figuring that I was the luckiest man on earth for having what looked to be a beautiful Mexican restaurant right near my house! I go in and wait to be seated, all is well. Different servers every time was interesting but not bad in any way. I order the shrimp burrito and I wait for the dish to arrive. I have a limited ammount of things that I can eat, seing as how I do not eat meat I was left with only the buritto a few salads and one or two other things that I could order. I dont complain because I love burritos. Usually. The thing comes and its the size of a frozen one you would buy from the supermarket and it was fairly expensive, it had a side of guacamole and some so called Mexican sour cream which tasted like yogurt with some water mixed in. I eat frequently at authentic Mexican restaurants and have always loved the sour cream. This was not good sour cream let me tell you that. But anaways, I ate the tiny burrito and it was okay, nothing special. We pay and then leave, and I figured that was the end of my experience. boy was I mistaken. I get home, have some water and watch a movie, then exactly 2 hours and 15 minutes went by. I felt a slight rumble at first, nothing crazy. 15 more minutes go by but strangely slower than usual and Im feeling some cramping that gets worse by the minute. 5 minutes pass and I feel overcome with a feeling I can not explain other than o sweet Jesus somthing is VERY wrong inside me. time comes to a hault. Somehow even though the pain was at its max, it continued to get more and more intense by the second. I fall onto the floor and pray for release. Somthing. ANYTHING. Im not even religious but I promise you I still saw God himself when I was on the floor begging for sweet release. But then, things got a little better when I stayed on the floor without moving a muscle, just enough for me to get my phone and write this review. Your cursed burrito made me beg for death. I will never go there again and I will spread my story far and wide for as long as I live. WHOEVER READS MY MESSAGE BEWARE Or FACE THE SAME FATE AS Myself.

2022-07-05I ordered a shrimp chimmichanga. It was excellent. My mouth is watering just thinking about it while writing this review. If you are in the are visiting or on your way to bethel woods and want to eat something before the concert, definitely go here. My one and only complaint is that the dish did not come with enough rice. This is a personal preference as I love rice.

2022-05-04Got here very late, was closed, the outside lighting gave a warm and nice reception, I pulled in the lot, spent a phone call, because if you drive on that road you might lose the cells signal at some point, i enjoyed the sight and fresh air breath.Somehow Google picked me up from there asking for a review, I love writing reviews, and so I did, do you see?

2021-09-04Incredible food, great service, and a really nice atmosphere. We went on a Friday night and were seated promptly. Our food came out rather quickly and was not only pretty it was delicious. There are little details throughout the dining room that I truly loved. Beautiful wall murals as well as rope trim. We will definitely go back.

2022-04-04My first visit to El Sombrero was awesome, met some nice people, owners Lewis n Anna were very nice n welcome me with open arms. The bartenders very attentive, nice n helpful. The food was sooo good I had a 20 pd steak cooked just right. My experience here rated a five star in all, I definitely will be back, do some more dancing. PS had steak sandwichs for two days . 😋. Thanks Lewis nAnna, see u soon.
