Ignore the 1-star reviews. Everything from the front desk staff, to the membership advisors, to the trainers are pleasant and professional. Siobhan made the signing up process easy. She was very informative and recommended the best membership, additional locations, and personal trainer. Speaking of personal trainers, Ive been working with Shelby for four weeks and have learned a TON. Shes encouraging and talks through each drill as we go. I dont feel shamed or pressured with her.The space is fine and always kept clean. Its New York, so everything is on top of each other. If you dont like stairs, then a gym isnt for you.
Dont come here if you are the kind of person who is serious about working out. The gym is not well equipped for serious lifters, and the people who are members here have horrible gym etiquette. Not one staff member corrects someone misusing or hogging entire sections; which is especially problematic during peak times. It is impossible to get a full workout done here, due to the fact that both members and trainers hog up multiple machines and sections at a time without regard for anyone else. If equinox is going to justify charging members $165 a month for the privilege to work out here, then they need to start acting like a serious gym. This place is a complete joke, and nothing more than a vanity for people who like to stare at themselves in the mirror with 5lb mini weights. Dont bother with this place.
Very good workout facilities, and clean. The cold scented towels are a plus. On the minus side, the main cardio room on the ground floor is often too cold in spring, summer and fall. Ideally, it should be room temperature or just a shade cool. But not as cold as an Arctic blast. My wife misses the pool, and I miss the sauna. (The steam room is a horse of a different color.) Somehow, a gym without a sauna just doesnt feel right.
Went to this gym twice on Saturdays and had a good workout. Looks like other commenters had very personal experiences that may not be of issue to others like me. I think rules are a necessary evil for any public gym location in the busiest city and I think they benefit more than harm so I’m okay with them.
One would think that by paying a premium you would avoid working out with tools. I have worked out over the years at many different Equinox gyms in the city and somehow, by far, this one attracts the biggest number of gym morons (dudes) I have ever seen. Zero gym etiquette, zero locker room etiquette, rude AF...go to any other Equinox for a better experience.
Warning to all Equinox members out there, you’d better check your charges from Equinox carefully, they might have been over-charging you secretly.I recently found out that Wells Fargo is not the only big company secretly takes advantage of its customers. Equinox did the same to me.I liked the gym… until I found out it secretly overcharged me about $50/month for over 2 years. I signed up through my company’s discount program. That means Equinox deducts money from my paycheck every month. Unless I go into my pay slip and check the details every month, I don’t know how much they are charging me. And who’d think a big company like Equinox would secretly overcharge members? When I found out, I thought it was an honest mistake and Equinox would refund me the money. But they refused, can’t even give me a legit reason. I emailed them the contract I signed. But they stopped replying to my emails or taking my phone calls.I will fight this to the end.But if you are an Equinox member or considering to be, you’d better add checking charges from Equinox to your monthly routine.
The trainers at this location are weird... I finally decided to go back and visit this one after a long time because I liked everything else but once I got out the locker room and into the strength area, one of the trainers started yelling something at me (heard it through my music) with his arms out. Ive never trained with him nor have I ever interacted with him. I didnt really react, had my music on, but made me remember why i stopped coming to this location...The trainers here are just really weird and its only this location from my experience.
THEY REFUSE TO PUT AC ON on 2nd floor, particularly during hot summer months. There is only one fan moving hot air around- I’ve asked staff at least on 5 occasions to put AC on and the only answer I got was “ we will let our engineer know”. For the last two months I wasn’t able to work out and had to leave the gym because the temperature was over 80 degrees. The staff is arrogant and will not help you.
I wish it was laid out differently... stuff is scattered around 4 floors, and the weight room is divided in two. I honestly havn’t been getting my best weight workouts in because of it. -Locker rooms are also really cramped. People are tripping over one another trying to get changed. Sometimes I wonder if it’s worth it, or if I should just go to blink...
Horrible!!!!!! the gym itself is nice but the staff makes me not want to everrrr step foot in there again! horrible staff everybody is walking around confused nobody knows what they are doing god forbid you need to see the manager .....that will NEVER EVER HAPPEN ! THEY JUST COME UP WITH EVERY EXCUSE POSSIBLE TO NOT LET U SEE THE MANAGER THAT HIDES OUT IN THEIR ROOM DOESNT EVEN HAVE DECENCY TO COME OUT AND TALK TO SOMEONE EVEN WHEN ITS A SERIOUS MATTER...HORRIBLE JUST HORRIBLE NEVER AGAIN!!! GET NEW STAFF!! INCLUDING MANAGER!

2022-05-15This is THE WORST Equinox in NYC. Nothing against the staff since there’s nothing wrong with them, but the facility is just awful.Cramped space and not enough machines/weights/etc for $250+ a month. When I first used this gym I thought i had to be missing a floor or area with more stuff in it, but nope it’s small relative to other Equinox’s. I would not sign up to use this as your primary gym as you can get a membership elsewhere for a fraction of the cost. Or, if you want to use Equinox just pick another location.

2022-06-29This Equinox location is one of the nicest on the Eastside near the Lipstick Building just down the street. Located conveniently to the subway line (6-train), accessibility is very quick by public transport. Having had a membership (between 2020-2012) Equinox offers a great range of yoga and Pilates classes as well as aerobics, to cycling. This facility lacks a swimming pool, and the nearest is at the Columbus Circle location. Membership offers two types:1) the one club, or 2) the passport, which features all other club locations throughout NYC. Of course pricing from then till now has dramatically increased over time. And literally is unaffordable for the average person. But, if it’s within budget—such an outstanding organization to workout at by comparison to other competitors outside of the New York City venue. In my opinion they should go “nationwide” as a corporate entity and move into the stock market, honestly. At least one or two, in places on the West Coast like (Seattle, San Francisco or LA), seriously LA— such a great place for landing several everywhere!

2022-05-02Ive been coming here since February and I really like this location, mostly because its so close to me.For the past like month though, the mens steam room has had dirt all over the floor... Its very annoying to have a good workout, and then end it in the steam room, only to have my feet feel disgusting. In most Equinoxes, I see them using a hose and spraying down the steam room and stuff, but I know for a fact they dont do it here... Theres no way people are tracking in this much dirt literally every single day of the week. Pretty annoying to be honest.Photo is from a (small) 1sqft section of the floor in the steam room.

2018-04-28I love this Equinox on 54tg street! One of the reasons is the super cool and professional instructor - Steve Feinberg who train Speedball and Shadow do classes which are great! The staff is great and very helping. The whole place is always clean and fresh - showers included! You can get a worm or cold towel if youd like.Theres a huge group fitness classes selection and the instructors are highly qualified.Membership is required.

2022-02-12Constantly closed (7pm on friday for example, so you cant get there after work, and randomly closed many saturdays), tiny, and over crowded. Not enough machines. Better experience at NYSC or NYHR for half the cost. Waiting for year to be up so I can cancel.

2021-07-01Gym itself is Equinox standard but the management isn’t. I signed up at this branch for an all access membership and asked them a few days later about upgrading . They wanted to charge me an one time upgraded fee despite the fact that I just signed up and that I would pay more every month. Do yourself a favor and don’t sign up at this branch for a membership.

2017-04-24Equinox @ 54th Street has their own policies of what members can and cannot to do. Additionally, management is rude, unprofessional and has no respect to members of their club. After going to Equinox @ 54th street for almost two years, now I am forced to go to other Equinox locations as management (specifically Nikki Williams) and other staff members are disrespectful to their members.Things that happened to me and went wrong in the past 6 month @Equinox 54th Street:1.Nikki Williams (manager) suggests that you workout in the yoga room in bare feet. Note: I am talking about utilizing yoga room when other fitness room is busy and yoga room was utilized by 30+ sweaty ppl and not yet cleaned. This is absolutely disgusting suggesting members to use the room with bare feet while it is covered in sweat and other dirt. Anyways, you pay $180 bucks a month to get fungus and other disease.2.Generally, the fitness studio room is very dirty…you can see sticky sweat on the floor and a bunch of hair and other dirt. I have seen cleaning staff clean it, but the way they clean it doesn’t make a difference.3.Cleaning staff members are disrespectful of members who use fitness studio for their workouts. They randomly select time to clean the back of the room when the room is full of individuals working out. They create so much noise that you can’t even hear music in your earphones.4.I always use instructor’s station to plug in my phone to play my music. I have never had this issue at other locations such as Bryant Park, East Side Sports Club, Bond Street, 63rd Street. But at Equinox @54th you CANT do it! And this is where it gets really funny. I see members use the music station all the time, but whenever I want to use it the manager comes and literally screams at me and my friends.5.One Saturday, I was doing an online workout with four of my friends in the fitness studio. Manager (it was someone else not Nikki) came up to the room and told us that we can’t workout together as it violates gym’s policy. What kind of policy? Since when I can’t workout with my friends?6.Two weeks ago, I decided to use sauna and left a full box of scrub right outside by the sauna area. 5 minutes later the box was gone. Either someone stole it or cleaning lady threw it way – I don’t know. Never ever leave anything outside of your locker. It will be gone in minutes. My review is very lengthy, but these are the experiences I constantly have to face at Equinox on 54th Street. You might wonder why I ran into so many issues. I do workout 6 days a week every single month, so I am pretty much there all the time. I have not experienced these issues at other Equinox locations. This is very disappointing as I have paid in total about 5k to Equinox in the past 2 years. I don’t pay this money to deal with rude management (like Nikki) who doesn’t care about their members.

2018-10-14The management of this gym is incompetent- I ended up getting a billing issue resolved by a manager at another location (even though I am only paying for this location) because they are so useless. For the price paid they do not maintain the club well either. I came in on Sunday and nearly slipped and fell because there was a leak in one of the bathrooms and I slipped and one of the TVs also wasnt working. Dont they do a walk through in the morning? When I asked to speak to the manager to let them know about the leak in case someone else hurt themselves a guy at the front desk was unnecessarily rude- I dont know his name ( he had dreadlocks on the off chance the management reads these posts). All in all the staff here as the other reviews have reflected are not good ( the manager did take care of the water issue once she was notified but the problem would never have occurred in the first place if they had done a walk through.) They also dont listen to feedback from their clients either -several people told them they wanted classical pilates classes ( the only two classes they have are either waitlisted and you cant get in or seriously packed) and instead they offered something called pilates remix by people who dont have proper pilates training. At this price you would expect something more. And check your bills carefully that appears to be an issue in all the equinoxes not just this one. If there was another gym close by I would definitely go elsewhere. And for the poor service and upkeep they just raised the rates! Only in New York....
