Lock 17 on the Erie Barge Canal is the tallest lift lock on the canal and one of the tallest lift locks in the world. The downstream end of the lock can be seen from the Route 169 bridge over the canal, but to get up close and personal with the lock and see how truly impressive it is you need to do a little walking.Take Elizabeth Street off of Route 167 in Little Falls down to Canal Place. Canal Place is an area with shops, restaurants and inns right along the Mohawk River. Continue across a narrow bridge to Moss Island. There you will find a small park that overlooks the barge canal. Park your car and take the crushed stone path to the East. A flat walk of 0.6 miles (with interesting views of Little Falls) will get you to Lock 17.

2021-08-21This was a most fascinating engineered structure to see and learn about. We happen to be there when a power boat needed a lift, so we got to see it in action. The operator was friendly and answered all my questions.

2019-09-22Great place for a day adventure. Great place to fish the Erie Canal from shore. Take short a hiking tour across Moss Island. Watch the lift lock in action. Small picnic area to have lunch in.

2019-08-23Awesome lock. One of tallest. A must see. I could not give it 5 stars do to lack a maintenance and reduce number of hours of operation. Also the Moss Island park may not be suitable for small children do cliffs and other hazards. Stay near the lock with supervision.

2021-07-28It is an awesome experience to see this lock in action. We watched two boats go through, one upstream and the other downstream. The power of the equipment is amazing. The lock attendant is happy to answer questions. Bring your kids. This is a very educational and interesting place!

2019-07-17Absolutely amazing place. They fit 7 boats in and brought them up in about 2 hours. Met a wonderful man and his black lab while there. Sadly, I never asked his name. He is a local treasure. My husband and I were told all about the Lock, the area, and local lore. The Lock workers were also full of facts and information. Timing is everything ... Hope boats come for your visit!

2019-06-29Well this was a high lift! The lock was having an issue and it took a long time to fill. But still you should experience the locks if you can!

2021-10-07Hard to get to but worth it as a great example of an Erie Canal lock. Was fortunate that a boat was traversing upstream while we were there so we got to see the lock in operation.

2019-05-21Great parking and super fun to go cast a line with your kiddos. Watching the boats enter and pass through the lock is something you cant experience just anywhere. Quick access up to the miracle mile trail which has plenty of discover all by itself. Or if you walk up the lock 17 stairs and across to Moss Island you can explore a spot full of cool terrain, big wild blueberry patches. The rocks show an amazing tell of time where over time the water has smoothed out large cylinders and coves throughout parts of the rock formation..see if you can find the little cave that maintains ice all year round. Its hidden in plain sight, post a picture if you can find it!
