Looks worse then a bake sale at your local High School. You walk in, and you head over to the cases, we found that eye appeal of the product to be on par with that of a bake sale or aunt Judys kitchen. Cakes looked flat, muffins were small and pongee. We understand its Gluten Free but if you want to charge that for it, you gotta have a better display.
I buy a cake yesterday for my birthday. It was awful dry and hard to eat the chocolate frosting it hasn’t any taste to chocolate. And the price was ridiculous $72. I’m also buy a donuts, but you should take a look to this recipe it taste like a muffin instead a donuts. Terrible experience. The personal very nice. But the products overpriced and terrible tasted
Great food. But bad business policies take this spot down 2 stars for me. I was THRILLED when I finally found a gluten-free AND vegan bakery. Most are one or the other. I went 4 times in one week, traveling all the way from Brooklyn!I love them and the staff are great. But they are always out of the most popular items. This bakery has been there for years now so they should know which products they need to make more of each day. By now, there should not be these supply and demand issues. It is beyond annoying to travel all the way there and not be able to buy products that are mega pricey - $8 for a Jalapeño Cheddar biscuit! - to begin with. And they gave me a number to call to supposedly reserve product. But no one picks it up and it says the mailbox is full.Get my fav the Jalapeño Cheddar biscuit, the Veggie Bombs, the cupcakes, and the teacakes. Skip the plain biscuit that was textured like sawdust. It was so awful I spit it out so as not to take in calories on something I didnt like.
The staff was really friendly and my experience was pretty good overall. I got a somoa donut and a jalapeño cheddar biscuit. Even though I’m not gluten free and I usually don’t enjoy gluten free foods, I thought the texture was really good for both the donut and the biscuit. The texture of the donut was slightly less desirable but still very delicious. The jalapeño cheddar biscuit was also really good until I got to the center of the biscuit. Whatever was used for fermenting the dough mixed with what I think might’ve been jalapeño brine made the center taste like champagne. Aside from that, the outer layer of the biscuit was tasty and buttery.
I don’t like to leave negative reviews, and being a lactose intolerant celiac, I know my options are limited when it comes to dessert. That being said, these desserts looked pretty. That’s where the good part ends. Sadly, they were flavorless. I sampled the samoa donut, which should taste like coconut, caramel and chocolate. It was none of those things. Just a sweet flavorless dough. The cinnamon sugar donut tasted the same as the samoa but with a thin dusting of cinnamon on top. The carrot cake cupcake had the tiniest single sliver of carrot and some cinnamon. No raisins. The frosting was goopy and flavorless. And we sampled the birthday cake, which again tasted like everything else just sweet with no flavor at all. So, in summary it seems evident that the same exact dough is formed into different shapes whether it be cake, cupcake or donut and simply decorated differently with more flavorless ingredients. Sadly, it all went into the trash. Celiacs deserve better. And if you look there are other better options in NYC. Just because it’s vegan and gluten free doesn’t mean it has to taste awful. I’m giving two stars for good service and being dedicated gluten free, so no cross contamination risk.
Absolutely loved this bakery! Ive been waiting years to visit here on pilgrimage from the UK, and got to see the newly refurbished shop interior on the day it reopened in January 2020. Definitely not disappointed - there was a wide range of gluten-free and vegan cakes, cookies and doughnuts available. All of them were great! The staff were very friendly and welcoming, and served with the biggest of smiles. Kinda wish I lived across the pond so that I could visit more often, but at least I know now that Im baking correctly from the recipe books! Looking forward to visiting again someday soon.
This is the best bakery I’ve ever been to, hands down. Try their lemon slices and cupcake tops if it’s your first time as they’ll give you a sense of range of sweet items. The bagels are delicious toasted and tend to sell out pretty quickly in the mornings. All vegan and gluten free with lots of choices of process sugar and nut free items.A definite place to visit, for sure!!!!
Those looking for gluten free, dairy free, vegan dessert options need to go here! Not much to look at as a storefront, but the baked goods are delicious. For folks with allergies this bakery is a yummy relief. Dont count on seating inside the shop though! Plan on buying your treats and eating them elsewhere. Xx
Great bakery..Most pastries priced around $5, and made without most food allergents ( No eggs, peanuts, etc). My 20 year son who is allergic to eggs, peanuts, 9ther nuts, shellfish, etc. cried when he tasted stored bought donuts for the 1st time in his life, after asking his brother if thats how they usually tasted 🙂... We will be back for a 3rd time in a week, just so he can take some back to Austin, TX .. We need a branch there !!
Erin McKennas Bakery baked our wedding cake for us! It was a little difficult to find a vegan bakery that would make a tiered cake at all, let alone one that was gluten free for some of our attendees. Erin McKennas Bakery was helpful and kind all throughout the process - from setting up the taste tests to ordering and picking up our final cake. The cake itself was delicious and more than fed everyone in attendance! My only small complaint would be that one of the layers had a little too thick of a layer of frosting in the middle. Other than that, big fan of the bakery (Ive also tried a bunch of the other baked goods) and I definitely recommend them for a wedding, birthday, or just a Wednesday!
The place itself tiny & not much attractive inside to stay. You hardly notice it from the street. BUT! This thing on the picture - double chocolate agave crumble cake - really insanely delicious. Homestyle (really reminded me my mothers homemade cakes), not much sweet with a swirls of liquid chocolate on crumbled top. Ate it at once! And after that really got feeling that vegan desserts are much tastier & satisfying than regular sugary sugar. Go & try! I plan to try all the things & than all the other vegan bakeries of NY to get final opinion - who is the winner in battle classic desserts against vegan style.
Very basic and boring flavors, nothing special.Chocolate chip cookies were just okay. The bakery items were terrible. Dry and not a good flavor. You want vegan doughnuts? Go to dun well. This place sucked.I paid $5.99 for a bag from toogoodtogo and it was seemingly rock hard stuff from who knows when, with no flavor regardless if it was not so dry.Lemonade was also $4.. lol.. erin.. girl..
Its really hard to find a vegan bakery when youre not in NYC. Since I was in NYC I decided to try one I found on trip advisor which lead me to Erin McKennas. My expectations were neutral and I decided to order a blueberry scone and a mint brownie. I wasnt thrilled with either. The scone was meh and the mint brownie although the icing was awesome the brownie itself was like a dry chocolate cupcake there was nothing brownie about it. The prices were a little high but I expect that in NYC . The display was dark and you really couldnt see what was in the case and there werent prices on anything. It was so hot inside and i was expecting a little more from a well known NYC bakery.
It was ok. Good options for vegan and gluten free. I give it 3 stars because the loaves were moist, I tried the chocolate raspberry & the banana chip which were great. I was not a fan of the cupcakes at all, the frosting is way too sweet, thick and stale/hard not sure if it was supposed to be soft and buttery. Also the bread on the cupcake was dry I was disappointed, also over priced. If I were to come back it would be for the loaves.
Its ok. I prefer the donuts over the cupcakes. My dad said you couldnt tell it was GF & V, thats how much they resembled regular cupcakes but just a tad dry. I like them. I made a huge order and when I left I didnt get something I was charged for. So it is what it is.
Literally the best doughnuts and treats. Just a delight as soon as you walk in. You know you will find something something for yourself even if you have an allergy to something. I am lactose intolerant and this place was my go to when I lived in NYC for a treat that I knew wouldn’t hurt my stomach.
Been going here for more than 10 years and won’t stop anytime soon! It was one of the first places where I could buy a baked good (only homemade before then). A pioneer in the vegan and gluten-free field. It fits so many of the dietary restrictions in my family, including having agave treats! The frosting is non traditional but soooo delicious. My favorites are the cupcake tops, eclairs, brownies, cookie sandwiches and donuts. It’s a bit pricey but having bought their cookbook and purchased all the ingredients for different specialty recipes, there’s a reason the prices are the way they are. Their day old goods are a great steal! Overall, could not recommend enough.
It’s great in that its vegan- that is about it. I would almost go for Oreos (because also accidentally vegan) over this place; at least I wouldn’t be out $8.00 for a cookie. The cupcakes and tea cakes are dry. They have their display case out which is all giant and covered in frosting, and then they put the actual piece in the box from the back fridge which is half the size and barely frosted. Over priced and underwhelming. I’ll go without dessert if this place is my only option.
Visited the Orlando and NY locations a few times and have never been disappointed. Having a huge selection of gluten free & vegan items at reasonable prices is just bliss! I think EMs cakes rival if not surpass the taste of regular baked goods too, so even if you have no allergies you must stop by and try. Great service at both locations too! Highly recommend!
This little bakery is a gem. By far my favorite gf bakery in NYC. Highly recommend going out of your way to get some sweets from this quaint shop. Service is great and everyone was so kind and helpful in ordering. I got a slice of lemon loaf and also an apple cider donut. CANT RECOMMEND ENOUGH
This place rocks! Gluten free, vegan, and delicious? Is this a dream? I dont have dietary restrictions, but I lovedd their doughnuts, esp the apple cider one! They put a little bit of chunky applesauce filling which I thought was a fantastic idea to keep the doughnut moist in the inside, but crispy crunchy and light on the outside. I expected dense, but it was not at ALL! Some of the others tasted a little too crumbly for my liking and waay sweet, but this definitely exceeded my expectations, and Ill be back for more soon!
My favorite bakery in NYC. The staff is always very friendly and make you feel at home. They have so many delicious pastries and baked goods. They also are able to bake cake you a cake with just a few days notice. No animal products used in their baked goods. Social distancing encouraged.
Got two cakes form this bakery for my bday, my guests did not eat them cause there were almost uneatable. Overly sweet and the flavors was not good at all. I would not recommend getting cakes from this place, maybe pastries are better, but def not cakes! For what it was the price was too high and the quality low. I am very surprised they have so many good reviews.
We tried a samoa donut, jalapeno cornbread, a mint choc chip cookie sandwich, and a pumpkin pie cupcake. They were all delicious and will likely be back to try more of the offerings. Its nice to be able to walk into a place and be able to eat anything they serve. Having both wheat and nut allergies and I being dairy free the hubby and I deeply appreciate this in and of itself.
One of the best vegan bakeries I’ve tried. The chocolate cupcake was so moist and dense. I got it with the mint icing. Worst part of the cupcake (it was kind of gummy and tacky? Maybe because it was cold?) but definitely worked eaten together. My boyfriend got a cookie which was pretty decent. We got donuts for the next day and the raspberry jam filled donut was a GREAT cake donut. That and the chocolate cake was the best overall. Definitely go here for the cake donuts and the actual cake.
Hubby bought half a dozen vegan cupcakes for my Birthday, Red Velvet, Chocolate and Vanilla. They also have Carrot, but I dont like that flavor. They were pricey at over $6 each w tax......but OMG sooo good. Worth it for an occasional special treat. Would have been 5 stars if less pricey.
My niece and I made a trip to this little, adorable, gluten-free bakery a priority on our NYC trip and it was sooooo worth it! We tried a little of everything, and the donuts, brownies and more were moist and delicious. It’s so nice to be able yo go to a bakery and have choices when you are gluten-free. It was like being a kid in a candy shop. :)
The pastries here are out-of-this-world good. Everything is gluten free and dairy free but somehow better than normal pastries. They change up the flavors often. I especially love their cupcakes. The staff are always sweet and helpful and its a great place to sit and people watch through the storefront window. They often have a free samples plate out, too :) its in a historic district and I love walking through it to get to the bakery. The only downside is that its incredibly expensive-- ~$4 for one cupcake.
Great spot for vegan, gluten free and non dairy treats. Been using them for kids birthday cakes for a few years now. Agave sweetener is an option instead of sugar, along with chickpea flour, coconut cream base for icing. The cakes taste delicious, sweet but not as hyper sweet as sucrose and white flour based ingredients. Definitely more expensive than a cheap cake made with flour and sugar, but its your body. Up to you to decide if its worth it.
Went in today after at least a few years since the last visit, only because I’m not often in the neighborhood. What struck me first was that the warm, homey vibe was now absent. Secondly, the wide array of allergy friendly baked goods was less than half of what I remember. What was available was not displayed in a particularly appealing manner. Any bakery should be tantalizing and grab the customer from the moment one enters. After deciding on Samoa brownie bites to take home to my son, (who always loved the treats from here, esp since he could safely eat their baked goods), my friend suggested we get a cupcake to share. Since I recalled that the bakery at one time was known for having some of the best cupcakes in the City at the height of the cupcake craze, I readily agreed. We each took a bite after we left the store. It was the absolute worst cupcake I ever tasted. Everything about it was awful, particularly the sour taste. We immediately threw away the rest of our $5+ cupcake. Fortunately the brownie bites were as delicious as I remember all of their baked goods being. Hence the 3 stars. Otherwise I was ready to give it 1 or 2. Sad that this once great bakery providing baked goods to a underserved segment of the population has not sustained its greatness.
This place is absolutely incredible! My sons best friend has allergies to several top allergens and this place satisfied both kids. Toddler approved! They are both three. I thought this place was wonderful. My son and I dont have any allergies and Im very open-minded to anything that taste good. Well done Erin McKennas Bakery!
Super cute bakery in terms of atmosphere, but did not love the items I got there. I was disappointed with the doughnut I got because it basically tasted like cake in the shape of a doughnut. I was expecting so much more. The texture was too light and mushy and needed more substance. It was a mocha flavor but all I tasted was sweet. It didnt have much flavor. Ive had better vegan and gluten free desserts at other bakeries and even from grocery store purchases, which is why I have put a two rating.
I hate walking into new places bc people can be rude but i love this bakery bc everyone’s so nice and everything is amazingi loved everything i got. blueberry scone, vanilla sprinkle donut, samoa donut, vanilla and red velvet cupcakes, banana bread and a bagel, all soooo good.
Overall, not impressed… I was told delivery (which was less than 2 miles away from the store) would be $20. I couldnt make it there, so fine, I paid almost as much for delivery as I did for the product. They were one of the few places I found that delivered, so theres that. For $30 I got 3 doughnuts, 2 cupcakes, 2 cookies, and a brownie bite, which is expensive, but not terrible for vegan baked goods, but they just werent very good.As a non-vegan, Ive tried many vegan baked goods with my significant other, and these were some of the worst. Everything was dry and crumbly in a bad way, and not terribly flavorful. I would not recommend going here again, considering the competition out there for vegan goods is strong.
I dont have dietary restrictions, so Ill be comparing this bakery to regular bakeries. I enjoyed the chocolate cake and the eclair was surprisingly refreshing, but I didnt find either special enough to make me comeback. I suppose, but could be wrong, that people on vegan and gluten free diets would rate this place higher.
Great sweets - so many choices! Not a fan of the icing but the carrot cake was great. Chocolate chip cookie sandwich was great, too, but oh man! A little sweet. I wish they had tiny ones, lol. Staff could be friendlier, but all in all great options and I would visit again.
This bakery is great for vegans and non-vegans alike. I have been a few times with a vegan friend of mine who has tried almost everything on the menu. I tried a cupcake, and it was just alright (I have had much better ones with this vegan friend at other places). I tried their breads, though, and they were phenomenal. I also tried a caramel donut. I would recommend this bakeshop to non-vegans and vegans, but would just give a heads up about the not so great cupcakes. It is very cutesy, and the staff is so friendly and helpful youll feel inspired to tip them. Another thing: It is also open late if you have a craving for sweets or baked goods after hours!
I was torn between three and four stars. The banana bread was dry and barely had a banana flavor, the cranberry bread (can’t remember the exact name) was good! They had a decent selection of doughnuts, brownie bites, cupcakes, cookies, and other sweets. I think it’s a great place for celiacs but not my first choice.
We tried three different donuts, the pumpkin cake, and a vanilla cupcake. The donuts were amazing--soft, fresh, and uniquely flavored (though I prefer the deep fried real donuts to the baked kind offered here which are basically just a cupcake in a different shape). The pumpkin bread was okay--but the cupcake was awful. For being so expensive, they need to practice better quality control. The cupcake tasted very old--it was dry. The store is super small and we were lucky to find a spot against the wall, but it was so crowded there was no incentive to stay and enjoy yourself or have a coffee, so we got everything to go and ate it in the street.
OMG, the Samoa donut was super scrumptious. The red velvet cupcake was delish. The employees were really nice. I cant go to the Delancey Street area without getting a treat from this place. Vegan and gluten free. I have loved this bakery for more than ten years already. Happy Holidays!!!
This bakery is the best, if I lived anywhere near here Id be in so much trouble. I dont even like cupcakes! But their gluten free vegan ones taste even better than the regular kind. The salted caramel cupcake was divine. I also had a brownie cupcake with a mint icing that was insane, I have no idea how they make that. Tastes way better than regular icing even. So glad this place is around, its warm and cozy on a warm day. Yeah its pricy but you get your moneys worth rather than the usual overpriced tasteless slice of disappointment that is most all other gluten free/vegan replacement stuff. Also had a cran-apple loaf which tasted really fresh.
The service was great but the cupcakes are very dense and dry. My sister and I Had the chocolate and mint flavor, the blondie cupcake and the cookie sammy. The best was the cookie sammy. I have tried many vegan cupcakes and they all ring to true this statement that the cupcakes are not moist and light and fluffy. I wish someone could master this already.
On the pricier side for baked goods, but great option for gluten free. I’m a fan of their cookie sandwiches – which are two cookies and a thin layer of vanilla frosting. They have a seasonal option of pumpkin maple cupcakes. So good. They also have cupcake tops, which is a nice choice if you’re looking for something slightly less heavy. And of course, their donuts are tasty – more like pound cake than a traditional donut.
When they have the pumpkin chocolate dipped madelines or pumpkin eclairs I am all for this place, but just for those 2 items. I find the baked goods here to be extremely too dry. My friend recently and very sweetly bought me a donut and cupcake from here in consideration of my allergies, so obviously I gave it another go. Took a bite of each, said I would save it for later and tossed it the moment she left. Hasnt gotten any better, just tasted more dry than the last time I went myself and inedible. If the pumpkin options were on regular rotation I would come here more often since I am frequently in the area, but otherwise, not worth the calories or hype, sorry.
For someone looking for gluten-free / vegan baked goods in NYC, Erin McKennas Bakery is a great place to start.Tucked away on the lower east side I was surprised by its out of the way location assuming itd be on more of a thoroughfare.Walking into the cute and tiny shop I asked for recommendations. Inquiring of my likes and dislikes the staff ended up pointing me toward their coconut and coffee crunch donuts. I selected both without hesitation.Theres seating for one or two at the front window or at a small bench outside. I made use of both on the two trips I took here during my stay in the city. The donuts were light and flavorful. The toppings crunchy, fresh and not overly sweet. The cake dough was lighter than other GF donuts Ive had in the past, which I liked. Not airy as in traditional flour donuts, but not dense like birthday cake either. The only drawback for me is that on both occasions what I ate sat in my stomach like a rock for hours after.Overall, for gluten-free baking, Erin McKenna provides something sweet without asking those with sensitivities to compromise.
Gluten-free, vegan, dairy-free, nut-free.....I dont know how they do it! Considering what ingredients they have to work with the baked good are very tasty. If you have dietary restrictions this place is awesome. If you dont its still pretty good but more expensive than regular sweets.
I was here last week to order my engagement cake, and had Armen helping me. He was so knowledgeable, creative, and professional. We sat down for an hour to draw out the custom design I wanted; his creativity helped me come to a final decision. He was very patient and helped me visualize exactly what it would look like. He also gave me advice on how to set up my desert table. My event is in March and will be posting up their beautiful work. They also let me taste samples and it was delicious. To all the brides, make sure to come here for your event. It will be the least stressful
I was very disappointed in the cake that was given to me. We spent 230 on a cake that I expected to be professionally done and what I received was a cake that looked as if it was done by a child. It was very upsetting and since it was for my son 1st birthday and there was nothing I could do in such a short time I had no choice but to stay with the cake. Not only did the cake look like it was made by a 5yr it did not taste good either the vanilla flavor cake did not taste nothing like vanilla it had no flavor at all and it was dry reminded me of corn bread and the brownie flavor was also dry and bitter noone at the party enjoyed this cake. If the cake could not have been done the way I asked I should have been told that it could be done. I was mislead and it was a waste of money. I will not ever purchase from this bakery never again and I wont recommend these cakes to anyone. I almost cried when I opened that box and saw the cake honestly I wanted everything to be perfect for my sons birthday and this ruined it for me. I dont want to hear I should expect this for a vegan cake because Ive been to many vegan bakeries and Ive had some amazing cakes. The cake looked and tasted as if the Baker hated their job so sad.
Ive conducted some serious taste testing in my search for delicious vegan AND gluten-free baked goods. Im happy to report that BabyCakes is your one-stop vegan cake shop! For my boyfriends birthday last year, I ordered a banana bread cake with vanilla frosting and it was a huge hit! Our friends - many are not vegan or gluten-free - loved it and my banana bread-loving boyfriend was psyched about how rich and delicious it was. If youre stopping in for a quick treat, try the agave sweetened brownies or amazing donuts!
My wife and I visited the bakery over the Thanksgiving holiday 2016. I am GF (celiac dz) and also lactose intolerant. Aside from being a little tricky to find, I was extremely pleased with the wonderful treats we purchased. The textures were delightful and flavors tasty. Pricing was about what I expected. Only criticism I leave is the availability to sit and enjoy your treats, but there is not much room to adjust seating options.
Non pretentious vegan cafe where you can enjoy vegan desserts. It’s a quaint, quiet place with all of the delicious desserts: brownies, chocolate cake, cupcakes, cookies, etc. Loved the atmosphere and the staff. I will choose this place any other vegan commercialized spot any day.
My friend is raw vegan and this bakery has everything you need. It was a chocolate cake with frosting. It didnt last long, and no one who wasnt vegan didnt even ask why the cake was different. After we mentioned that is was vegan and what it didnt have and everyone said the cake was delicious and it tasted great. Im not vegan myself but I will b going back to get this cake really soon, I had 2 servings last night
Babycakes miraculously makes healthy taste good. Ive had the large chocolate chips.Theyre tasty and slightly crispy. The coffees quite good too. Open late on Saturdays, Ive parked myself here to savor a snack and charge my smartphone. The staffs friendly and comes across as genuine and gracious.Babycakes, Ill be back in a bit!
Im no baker - and dont even have a great sweet-tooth, but my girlfriend is gluten-free and apparently this is her FAVORITE place in the city. I went on Valentines Day and it was PACKED! Even still they ladies there were able to make it painless for me and serve me up the perfect assortment of confectionery treats!Service was so excellent that I couldnt NOT review them!
Cute little store it was a bit crowded so I didnt get a chance to check out the front of the store. I was distracted by the display of vegan friendly baked goodness, so I cant vouch if they provide any seating or not. Once you enter the store you will be hit with the aroma of buttery pastries. I wish they made a perfume with that particular scent, it will make everyone feel fabulous. So many baked goods were on display, so hard to just pick a few items. Their donuts on my hit list for the next trip! What caught my eyes are the mini brownie cups. There was chocolate chip brownie and agave filling brownie, the staff recommended me to get the chocolate chip brownie at $1.25 /each. Lets just say I ordered a dozen - I regret not ordering more :(As all the baked goods are vegan friendly and gluten free, their product is on cakier side of things. A cake-y brownie I dont mind. How cake-y you ask, I got to try the blueberry churro - the texture was more like a donut than churro.Tips: Day old cupcakes are buy one, get one.
We are from out of state and came in for the first time today to this bakery. We ordered over $40 of GF bakery treats including cinnamon rolls, lemon bread, lemon scones, carrot cupcake and it was all 5-star and truly delicious. We enjoyed every morsel throughout the day. The lower review is due to the young lady who helped us who was so unfriendly. It was super disappointing having such poor service when we sought out this specific bakery because we had purchased the Babycakes cookbook a few yrs back. We told her how excited we were to be there and she literally smirked. Service in every other place we frequented in Manhattan over the last wk was top-notch and we enjoyed delicious GF restaurants and cafes with excellent service for our family. Not until this stop at this bakery were we ever treated with an unfriendly attitude.
Now I am not vegan but there is something about vegan desserts that are just so perfect. Some people say compensation for ingredients lacking but who cares as long as they taste as they do? I had a friend bringing some Babycakes to a dinner party and there began my love for this delicious spot. With friends with gluten allergies -they can really help you out!
Stopped by the bakery while passing through NYC. My girlfriend is allergic to just about all the fun foods lol and so hadn’t had a donut in years. It was such a pleasure to watch her pick out a box of things to try. It was the first time I’d seen her have so many options that she couldn’t actually try them all. Thanks for everything you do. I had a bite of a donut and damn, so good. It’s not like it can’t be done, you just need to put your mind to it like Erin McKenna’s Bakery has and vegan, gf baked goods can be just as enjoyable as their gluteny cream-cheese filled cousins. Will be back next time we’re in the city.
I love Erin McKennas bakery. I remember checking it out when the bakery first opened, as Babycakes. And am happy to report that the variety of choices, the quality of each item and overall deliciousness is top notch.I have a huge sweet tooth and checked out mostly all of the bakeries in New York. While Im not a vegan or gluten intolerant, I am mindful of what I put into my body, and Erin McKennas bakery always feels like a sweet indulgence that I can feel good about. I know there are no processed ingredients, artificial colors, or weird stuff that I cant pronounce in anything they create. The texture of the products and flavor cannot be beat! Youre definitely not compromising on taste or soulful sweet goodness in coming here.I recently ordered a couple of doughnuts and chocolate chip cookie sandwich through Postmates. All were delicious - highly recommend!
I havent been able to eat dairy, eggs, soy, or wheat for a while and thought Id never eat yummy deserts again - I was so wrong!! This bakery had seriously the most amazing donuts, cupcakes, and cookies! I couldnt even tell they were allergen free --- cant wait to go again! Im already craving more. It was a little pricy but no more than most NYC bakerys.
Anyone would love this place but if youre gluten-free and/or vegan, you must go! We were lucky to be staying nearby and went twice in our 3 days in Manhattan. We had donuts: chocolate dipped, samoa, cinnamon and sugar, and cookies and cream. They were all to die for.
Edited to add: OMG THOSE DONUTS. I shared them with my mom and another GF/DF friend and all 3 of us were practically teary-eyed because they were SO good.Ive only tried the bagel and the scone so far...I also got an eclair and one of each of the 7 donuts they had. So far Im in love and am already anticipating ordering from them for shipment to Buffalo in the future because this bagel is the best GFV bread product Ive had in the 4 years Ive been forced to eat GF/DF. 😍 Bakery was nice, staff was very friendly! Wish I lived closer.
The doughnuts everyone raves about? They did not sit well for me. They tasted very odd and cereal-y, and it just didnt work for me. Some of the cookies and cupcakes are pretty good. Im not vegan nor am I gluten intolerant or celiac, but for those that are, I know this bakery is a haven of happiness.
The cake I bought here was good, but their customer service is doubtful. I got charged twice for the same order. Since I had placed an order by phone, I provided credit card details. However, while collecting the order, I paid by cash & reminded them too to not charge my credit card. After a few days, I saw a charge on the credit card statement. On following up with the bakery, they were not prompt in looking this up. I had to follow up 3-4 times. Ive edited my rating up to 3 stars since they finally did provide a refund.
Ive been here twice. Both times late at night, near closing. The first time, I had a doughnut and a brownie bite (they threw in an extra too! :)) and I had a coffee...that experience was AMAZING! The second time, last week, I brought my sister for a birthday treat and I was pretty disappointed! We both had the carrot cake cupcake and it was SUPER dry and the frosting was meh. They gave us each a free cupcake top and those were delicious...MUCH better than the ones we paid for! The coffee is always tasty and the staff is super friendly. My only other beef is that the prices are a bit ridiculous, even for NYC. Plus, the $4 doughnut that I splurged on last time was even SMALLER this time around, so I couldnt convince myself that it was worth the money. :-(
Best bakery to go to if you have dietary restrictions or food allergies! This is where to go if you are vegan or gluten-free! Their cupcakes taste delicious and now they are even making doughnuts. Its a tiny shop but good enough. You can buy a little something and eat it along the wall. They have a few bar stools. A cake can be kind of expensive, but worth it for the quality.
My mom has celiacs disease and hadnt been able to have a doughnut in years until we came here! The perfect gift for anyone gluten-sensitive. If that doesnt convince you enough, I on the other hand can still eat gluten and honestly love their carrot cake cupcakes more than any gluten-filled cupcakes Ive had.
GLUTEN FREE CUPCAKES! My family is all gluten free and sugar free and always searching for a spot for treats. At this little spot you can grab a sugar free, gluten free cupcake and maybe a cup of Stumptown coffee or a tea and chill for a bit. They have a variety of deserts and do have ones with sugar if you are in the need for that fix. The folks behind the counter are cool and inviting. My 3 year old daughter and I hang out here sometimes on a date and chat with the people that come in while we eat our cupcakes. :)
My toddler has allergies to wheat, soy, nuts and egg and he is also a very fussy eater, often saying no to anything new and unfamiliar. He is turning 3 in a few days and I bought cupcakes from here to celebrate his birthday over the weekend. They were pricey ($4.95 per cupcake) but after blowing out his candles my toddler looked at the lemon frosted cupcake and eagerly opened his mouth and bit into it and then went on to eat it happily. It was his first time eating a cupcake. I couldnt have been more pleased. We also bought the brownie bites and they were really delicious. So glad for this place. I didnt know which cupcakes to pick for the party so I asked the shop to help me pick some that kids would like and the person at the counter definitely picked the right ones. Great service
Go here for the pastries not so much for birthday cakes. I ordered a cake for a 60th birthday party and I was disappointed by this bakery. Not worth the price, even for a vegan cake. The cake turned out to be uneatable. An hour before going to pick it up, the bakery calls and says, the cake isnt setting and asked me if I would like to cancel my cake or pick it up, two and a half hours later. Of course I needed the cake...AND after all this the cake tasted awful. The store did not even have the courtesy to apologize.
I ordered as a gift for my daughter and I was disappointed in the packaging. It was delivered in a regular brown box with styrofoam; there was not even a label of where it came from or that it was gluten free ; there was no label that even said what I ordered, I didn’t remember a I had to look up the order. Very disappointing
One time before I requested for very little agave to be used for a cake and they said no. But tonight made up for it. I really wanted a vegan cupcake for my bday bc my very nonvegan family didnt wanna get me one. I got there at closing time and they let me iiiin! Super grateful! Not sure that it would happen with another crew but hey! I got my..CAKE CAKE CAKE CAKE CAKE CAKE CAKE!
Note: I am not a vegan! But, I went with a friend who is a vegan in order to sample their treats... the chocolate cupcake was dry as a bone. The caramel filling in the vanilla cupcake was unpleasnt oozey. I dont understand why everything has to be vegan AND gluten free. That said, I wont be returning unless I become allergic to wheat and dairy.
I went here after visiting Nyonya for my favorite ginger chicken and rice dish. My friend and I walked over there and it was a moderate walk but once we walked in, it was magical. The warm aroma of chocolate and agave met us and the bright and soft walls were so adorable. Everything is totally affordable and perfectly portioned. I got the lemon slice and apple churro. Not too sweet yet full of flavor. Best part-I am happy that this place has the most helpful and happy staff and that it had decent business hours (we went around 9:45p). I am throughly satisfied. Plus they have great tea and other beverages should you get thirsty. I plan on trying everything on the menu.
It does have a lot of variety of vegan and GF cakes. The nice thing is that after you eat their desserts you dont feel bloated, like with regular cakes. I dont like that the place is tiny and it is almost always impossible to sit there. It kind of always forces you to take out
Im surprised I didnt see them at the NYC Veg. Food Festival. Their cupcakes are the stuff of legend. Furthermore, as I cant eat dairy, its good to be able to walk into a place where I can eat most of the stuff on the menu (because its mainly vegan). SUPER reccomend. And the staff is super friendly, too.
A truly tiny bakery which i walked past twice before noticing where it was. Do not look for a sign saying BabyCakes as they no longer use that name. Fantastic doughnuts. much more filling than regular ones. I was stuffed for hours after eating 3. They also make cakes and other things so i will be ordering from them in the future.
5/5 stars! We have all of Erin Mckennas gluten free books and we were so excited to fly from MN to experience the fresh in person baked goods! Went back a 2nd year too. Gluten Free / Tree nut Free / Vegan Donuts, bagels, you name it! It is near impossible for me to go anywhere because of Celiac and allergies plus my vegan lifestyle. Erin Mckennas makes me feel safe and I don’t get sick. So delicious and I can’t wait to be back!!! I dream of going back a 3rd year!
While I am not a diagnosed celiac, I am gluten intolerant and I have tried all the gluten-free bakeries in Manhattan. Ive been to Erin McKennas bakery (they switched names, I guess, since I used to know it as BABYCAKES, many times. Each time I go, I am a little disappointed. The place is super cute, but the baked items are average, really. They do have a large variety, but sadly things simply dont seem to live up to the hype. The mocha cupcake is OK and last time, I had a cinnamon donut that was pretty meh. Ive also had the red velvet cupcake and it was also just OKay. Its definitely better than Jennifers Way overall, but if you really want to best, try Tu-Lus.
Being celiac, this place was awesome. I too had a slight problem with the lady behind the counter when I visited last year, and I couldnt understand why, as there was no line and I was the only customer (but this never happened again).... Needless to say, I got a box of cupcakes and took them home. I have never liked cupcakes or cake much because of my awful childhood memories of what would happen, and I was pleased with how light it tasted. It wasnt dense and heavy at all! Now I am addicted, and I only wish it was closer to me! I already bought the book, but the ingredients are difficult to find at times.
This cupcake shop comes as close to Magnolia as you are gonna get, a little different on the icing, cause I would say I might even like the icing better than Magnolia, but texture of the cupcakes a tad more fluffy, not as thick. Very cute little venue, kinda hip. Its a small little hole in the wall, but not quite as packed out at Magnolia. Def a good try for those who love cupcakes. I give it three stars cause they dont have alot of selection.
This bakery uses pictures of cakes that they cant even design. I had to cancel my order at their NYC location today after the back and fourth disappointments of them being unable to design a cake as pictured on their Instagram page. Sad ...it seems their using pictures of other bake shops products.
I ordered a cake from Babycakes for my wedding in November 2016. I went back and forth with them throughout the entire process with photos and they even did a sample cake for me to show the texture of the cake. I was very impressed with the continued follow up and was looking forward to having them make my wedding cake. My husband picked up the cake on our wedding day and unfortunately, Babycakes made our cake bright, kermit green which was way off from the light, mint green we had previously discussed. Being that it was the day of, there was nothing that we can do but hide the cake in a corner at our wedding and not light it. I reached out to my salesperson at Babycakes the week following the wedding to send a photo (as she had previously asked that we send one) and let her know my disappoint in how things turned out. Needless to say, I did not hear back from the salesperson with an apology or with any comments. It is funny how when something bad happens, people go silent. It was quite disappointing and to be honest left a sour taste in my mouth with Babycakes as all I wanted from them was an apology for not creating the cake that I paid for.
The poor customer service exhibited makes me refuse to continue to buy their premium priced products. I ordered a cake for my 21st birthday, they werent finished with it in time and also spelled my name wrong. So I had to wait for them to scrape and redo it. But because Im a believer in second chances I went ahead and ordered another cake for my moms birthday. I walked in the store the same time as four other girls, whom I stepped behind in line, out of courtesy. They crowded the space and couldnt decide what to get. I stepped forward and told the associate that I just needed to pick up a cake and she said hold on. She proceeded to ring up the four girls plus one other girl who walked in after I did. When I asked her why she let them all skip me, she said that for future reference I need to place my order first. Umm... my order was placed two days ago over the phone. She rolled her eyes and said sorry but made no effort to improve my experience. Completely Rude and no concern for my time. Truly disappointed. Dear Erin Mckennas bakery: Next time, serve those who are ready first. Dont make me wait for people to make up their mind when we all Walked into the store at the same time. And if youre going to charge premium prices, then please be prepared to exhibit premium customer service.
Customer service wasnt the best, when my mom went to order she asked them how long it would take to make a cake so they said 2 days so she asked if she could order for thursday which was two days later. The employee stared at her for a while before saying anything. The icing color and piping color was messed up, and it was really sloppily decorated. If we werent in a rush I would have asked if they could redo it. It wasnt worth the money I paid for it. I was expecting a lot more from this bakery.
I loved this place. The stuff is very friendly. I usually buy donuts but I went today and they increased the prices. I find it very expensive for what it is. I wish they wouldnt... I got a little bit dissappointed. Once again , the stuff is always very helpful and nice. But is not worth the price :(
A bit disappointing. Ordered a chocolate cupcake, a doughnut and a slice of banana bread. The cupcake was dry. I didnt finish it. The banana bread was ok, but nothing special. The doughnut on the other hand was awesome !!I would to back there but woulndt order a cupcake again.
They charged me .50$ for each box and they told me on each box has a kosher certification. Got home and saw no kosher certification on any of the box. Called up and the manager/ owner was nasty. Where is your dam customer service? Never will shop there again. Stay away from this store.

2022-03-17This place truly makes gluten free and vegan dreams come true. I have been to the location in Orlando, but this one has so much more variety of goodies. I got one of their day old half off deal (a container of two slices of banana bread and a slice of lemon blueberry bread) and it was just as good as fresh! The staff was also extremely friendly and helpful. Thank you for making my visit to NYC so special!

2022-07-18Top me offWith a cupcake top that is, only found at @erinmckennasbakery ! Right across the street from me is this awesome bakery. They’re gluten free and vegan and use natural sweetness like agave. The cupcake top is a vanilla cupcake with chocolate frosting sweetened with that agave. And that full cupcake is a chocolate brownie cupcake with mocha frosting. You’d never guess that they are gluten free or vegan

2021-12-21I stumbled upon this adorable spot on my birthday (today). I was taking a peek through the windows and a lovely woman Carla and her dog Grizzly were sitting there outside and told me that I should try anything they make. We chatted then parted ways, or so i thought, and she ended up buying my birthday desserts. Needless to say, she truly made my day and the desserts came to a close second. I can’t wait to be back, they were very helpful in my decision and it’s such a cute spot tucked in the lower east side. I surely won’t forget my experience 💞 I chose the gingerbread cupcake, raspberry brownie, and they threw in a couple choc chip cookies…all were so good! Thank you 🙏

2022-07-21Gluten free is not my type. I don’t like donut. I think I was awful dry and hard to swallow. Anyway, the shop and staff is very nice.

2022-04-10The donuts here are excellent! The cupcakes and sweet breads are ok, but if you are going to pick one sweet, get a donut. So nice to find a yummy vegan dessert shop.

2022-03-23This location pales in comparison to the LA location. Just overall underwhelming when you know what the baked goods are supposed to taste like. Attached is a pic of the banana chocolate chip bread-- we found one measley chip in it. Sigh

2021-09-01Oh my my…oh hell yes…better put on your dessert dress. Stopped by not realizing it was vegan and such. Never would have known. So good. Did the mocha crunch doughnut (no-dough nut??) and the cookie sandwich - vanilla. But I’ll be back soon for the mint and the chocolate chocolate ship cookie sando 🍪

2022-06-24Thank you for being there! In my experience, whenever I have cake I’d eat just that: the cake. I always find the frosting too sweet for my taste buds so I remove it from it the cakes I eat. But oh my, I dared my self to taste a bit of the cake I got for my wife’s birthday and it was amazing! Not too sweet, perfect texture and compliments well the cake that is a bit more on the drier side. Absolutely loved it!

2022-07-20I ordered some vegan treats for my brothers Birthday on Door Dash. I mentioned in the order that it was a Birthday gift. When my brother received the box, it had Happy Birthday written on it. It also came with a candle. I was so touched by the extra special details Erins bakery provided. My brother said the baked goods were amazing. Thank you so much for such a pleasant experience!

2022-05-08Almost four years ago, we ordered a cake for a birthday party from Erin McKennas Bakery, and immediately thought of them to create our wedding cake. Working with Katherine and team was a smooth process, and our guests absolutely loved our brownie naked cake with vanilla icing. Guests with dietary restrictions who ordinarily are unable to enjoy a traditional wedding were especially excited! Thank you for a gorgeous and delicious wedding cake!
