ESSEN in other cities:
This place has any type of breakfast, lunch and snack food you can think of. Great place for a grab and go lunch. They have a very extensive hot bar thats pay by weight and also pre-made sandwiches, sushi and breakfast. Also have build your own sushi, rice bowl, pasta and sandwich stations. There is a seating area upstairs if you need it.
They do not put on airs, it is exactly what you expected to be.SLOW FAST FOOD.The guys who work here are excellent, and efficient. They will remember your usual and get it ready in less than 3 minutes. The cashiers are also super quick. It is super clean in here and they have a lot of healthy options (also some unhealthy ones)
Great breakfast buffet, early serving, too. Great location for commuters, just north of Penn Station. Price is a little high for the serving, but the quality and selection of (at least in my experience) their breakfast makes it worth it. Very friendly staff.Only 4 stars, as the price to eat there daily, before or after commuting, isnt very cost effective (otherwise would be 5).
Look I don’t rave about places unless there’s something to rave about. Well this is it! The place has FRESH variety after variety with everything perfectly cooked! Hot, cold, salad, or sandwich and everything in between they have it. Basically you can eat at this place breakfast, lunch, or dinner. My first time in NYC and I’m in love with this place. Definitely a MUST to have especially if you are seeking healthy choices!!!
By far the freshest and absolute best buffet options in the city. For the health conscious and those not so much. Essen has limitless food selection in terms of diversity, from pasta, to pork belly, to lamb, sliders and so much more.Whether you choose grilled, fried, steamed, baked or raw...the food is delicious. You can dine here daily and never tire of this place! Excellent staff, customer service and price points. Just a fantastic joint.
Food is great. prices are HIGH! Whoo! Prepare to SPEND in this place! They have a variety of goof options on the buffet lines to include soups, fruits, burgers, wings, etc.. they also have cold prepared sandwiches and a deli for custom sandwiches and salads. They also have packaged chips, juices, candy, baked goods. Really its a great place to find food everyone can eat. Service is efficient and relatively friendly. Just make sure to bring the wallet!
Essen is a once in awhile lunch place to go to. The sandwiches if you watch them carefully is great. I say watch them because the guys behind the counter gossip a lot and lose track of what they are doing to your food. So stay alert. The salads are risky because some ingredients will make you sick. I know it did to me. Leave the hot stands alone. They are bland at best and often need more added for taste and anyone may and do touch them. Prices are typical NYC but some things there are worth it.
I cant stand this place for anything other than having a place to sit. The food overall is as you would expect from a large food emporium - its mediocre at best as they pump out hundreds of units a day. Most of the breakfast buffet items are sugar based, and the eggs are generally hardened a bit under the heating lamps.I know this review wont deter anyone from coming here. After all, its convenient and there are plenty of options. But if you dont like crazy crowds for nothing particularly special for lunch, consider yourself warned.
Ive been coming in since they reopened and will keep coming back. There are so many options to choose from. Please invest more in seafood 😅. I love those spinach and vegetable dumplings and please add more flavor to the dumpling sauce. Put a lot of lemon in it.😅 Love those shumai!😋👍🙌
The food is so amazing!! Ive enjoyed eating here even if just for some soup. The fruit is always fresh and the food is well prepared. There are so many options to choose from and each is cooked to perfection. I have never been disappointed when partaking of these treats!
To whom it may concern. I would have rated Essen with one star. The cashiers are great so I gave two. I have worked in the area for two years. In the morning I always had a issue with the staff that makes breakfast sanwiches. They are very rude. They have terrible customer service skills. Many times I have said good morning. There response is what do you want. That same unprofessionalism shows in there work effort. They messed up my order last week. I informed them of the error. He threw the sanwhich in the garbage with extreme force then stared at me. I will never order another sanwhich from them. I hope the owners are aware sales are going down because of there unruly behavior. I work hard for my money. I refused to spend it with establishments that allow employee s to disrespect there clients.
Food quality is excellent. Better than Wholefoods. Price is bit aggressive and don’t show lists. SeeMs to be NOT right. Asked to show full lists but denied because they don’t have it. Two lunch boxes, one evian 1 liter bottle, two Americano - 12 oz single shot per cup. Usually I pay less than $30 at Whole Foods. But taste and quality is way better than Whole Foods.
I discovered this little gem whilst staying at The New Yorker Hotel NYC. Its just down the street. Perfect for breakfast, we went every day. They do everything from healthy fruit and yoghurt to fried food and pastries. The pastries and coffee are well priced. The other food is weighed out so can be a little pricey if you get a lot. I would recommend starting your day here with some nice breakfast and the chocolate muffins are amazing.
Their breakfast buffet options are amazing. They dont just give you 5-7, more like 15. However it is on the pricey side given it cost 10/pound for breakfast items. Try their baked avocados if they made it for the day. Also try to use smaller containers. For some reason it cost a bit less.
This is a great place that has a large variety of food. It has a buffet bar along with several DIFFERENT stations for Salad, Sandwiches, Soups, Pad Thai etc. The food is really great and from the crowds everyday it seems to be a popular place to enjoy a meal. They also have a seating area as well.
I absolutely loved this place. The food..... especially the salad bar is so fresh and colorful that it caught my eye from the street. The salad, the essen special, was phenomenal!!! Lots of choices. No way you can go wrong here. I also had a chicken pesto panini, FABULOUS!!Cant wait to go back for another salad tomorrow. I will not get the side salad portion. I need a full size of that green goodness!! Would love to have one of these in Charlotte, North Carolina.
Food is okay but customer service is super trash. Women behind register did not greet me upon checkout even when I said hello. After I paid she said “next” without giving me a chance to put my card away. I, the customer told her “have a great day.” Lol. I will not spend any more money there especially since it’s pretty pricey anyway. I still believe in customer service so I won’t be referring coworkers to eat here.
Wide variety of fairly fresh food offered with an occasional smile . Breakfast is your best bet. After that, its just not worth the price . It may all look good on display but fails to deliver on taste.PS. And guys , get some real maple syrup already . The days of aunt jamima are gone.
Used this place regularly. Food quality ok no real complaints. Get a chicken ceasar salad most days I go there. Over the last six weeks I have noticed that they are getting smaller and smaller. A large salad is now only the Air space over what a small would be! Not very impressed at being charged extra for air!!!
I bought my lunch today, Saturday July 14th at 13:03.It is been more than five months that I always have my lunch there, I always get the same food and drink. Today I was ridiculous OVERCHARGED for a food that is usual for me. I know exactly what to eat, my portion amount and always paid $18-$19 which it is a high price already.I went to the other location at Soho, I had the usual food and paid $17.45 and called my attention already. Today same food, same portion, same drink I was charge $25.59 THAT IS INSANE!!!!!!!!!!!!So you will pay you food plus a weight that they FOR SURE will charge you!
Large selection of fresh food daily.Hot and cold food, buffet style.Theres also sandwiches and paninis made to order. Theres bakery food, coffee, ice cream, snacks and many more different types of food.Theres convenient and nice clean seating upstairs if you want to eat there. The cashiers are quick to serve everyone even if theres a long line youll be out in minutes.WiFi is free.
I am a regular to this location but I will no longer go to any Essen. Today I got yelled at. I bought my lunch as I usually do and I got a very important call right after paying for my lunch. Today was raining cats and dogs, so instead of picking the phone outside Essen I answered close to the door but not in the middle, a good 5 foot far from the door on a quiet area. A small dark haired woman kicked me off telling me I can not be talking there and I have to go upstairs or outside. She was NOT nice, terrible customer service. She yelled at me like if I was a toddler.I know you do not care about loosing customers because it is full of tourists. But as a hardworking Newyorker I will put my money somewhere else. If I can choose I will choose other place that invest in good customer service.
Horrible management. good quality food, but pricey.1. Tried to order a pastrami and egg breakfast sandwich, but was told they only have pastrami for lunch. What? You literally have it, but refuse to sell it before lunchtime?...They lost a sale and I went to another place.2. Self-serve ice tea looked inviting, but when I got back to my office, it was ice coffee. NOT what I wanted.3. Came in at 11:05 to get lunch, but they were switching over from breakfast. I asked when I could order a sandwich and was told that started at 11:30. Fine. I saw pre-made chicken cesar wraps in the display case (about 20 of them) and asked the man if I could take one of those. He said no. So, the sandwiches will just sit there for 25 minutes before I can purchase? I said, should I really walk out and go to another place? Just got a blank stare.3 strikes Essen, this is a busy area, I can go elsewhere and tell all my friends and co-workers of your horrid customer service. Good-bye.
New favorite - IGK (same block) is in deep trouble. So far for lunch have tried Chicken Quesadilla which was very good / priced right ($7.95) and sushi. Sushi is very fresh and much cheaper per-piece compared to competition nearby. Runs around $6 for a pack of 10 piece (I tried the Salmon avocado and eel avocado, both high quality.) Lots of sushi selection too, well see if they can keep up with demand during lunch rush, but so far so good. Took a little while for quesadilla, maybe 5 minutes, but that is expected. They offer delivery if you dont want to wait.Great breakfast sandwiches - they dont skimp on the bacon and eggs are very fresh. Also - my new go-to for iced coffee. Variety of flavors available as well as cold-brew. I like to mix mine with half cold-brew and half french vanilla coffee. Better than Gregorys coffee and Starbucks iced coffee in my opinion. Milk / creamer options are kept cold in dispenser machine. I prefer this over counter top pour which is often warm and been sitting out all day.
Buffet style meal with a plethora of selections. Two people in my group for breakfast including, fruit, one coffee and two bottles of water. $10.99. only problem is that the food was lukewarm by the time you paid and went upstairs to eat. A great bargain for the money.
Lots of options to choose from. A bit expensive. Pricing for make your own goes by per pound. Options from meat to salad to seafood, sandwiches, burgers, pasta, healthy, fried, soup, etc. Not bad for mass cooked food. Plenty of lines to check out. You can dine in if you want as there are tables and chairs.
This place just opened a couple weeks ago. Their soups are made in house and to die for. Half of the soups are your standards. The other half are what appear to be their own recipes. Usually there is at least one korean recipe and these are great! I dont need to ask, but I can these soups are made on the spot for that day. Since its a prepared food place, I assume they use ingredients from the prior day... which is not a bad thing. Bottom line, their soups are really awesome, this is their strong point. Homemade soups.
This place is awesome! Practically has every food imaginable!! Honestly kinda overwhelming! So many stations from sandwiches, pizza, salads, Asian food, American food, baked goods, fruit salad bars regular salad bar, chips, candy, coffee, soups and Im sure plenty more!
I went there today for lunch with my client and had a terrible!! experience. The staff there was discriminative towards him because of his disability. He wasnt harming anyone , stealing anything not being violent. After I purchased lunched I simply wanted to use the bathroom. They told him to get out in a nasty way said hes disturbing the peace and threaten to call the cops! When I asked to speak to a manger and explained he was with me they started being rude and wouldnt allow me to see a manger. They scared my client out the store and started speaking in a different language. They treated him nasty and accused him of disturbing the peace threaten to call the cops and wouldnt allow me to speak to a manger . I was hurt sadden and disappointed of the enmoral discrimination my client and I endured. I never though people can treat others with disability and opposite race so nasty. Never again!!
Stood in line for 10 minutes at the salad counter staring at the sign that says opens at 1130Cute girl walks up and starts talking to the guy behind the counter and bam he starts making her salad for her. When he finished the employee asks whos next like WTF??I let him and his manager know I did not like being overlooked for a cute girl and was told by the manager if you dont like it go somewhere elseIf your Male and do not like being discriminated against I would not eat here.If your female and dont like being objectified you might not want to shop here.Nothing like a good case of employee sexual discrimination being over looked by the manager...
If money is not an issue then yea coming here when the food is fresh is nice, the food is ok BUT its over priced and imo its not worth it all. Go to freaking chipotle or something which is like 2 blocks away. Your wallet will thank you. 2 star rating because of how over priced it is its just not enough bang for you buck.
I came in at 11:00 I wanted a sandwhich I was told that I could have one made. Then I was told no not until 11:30 when I told, the manager he,was rude and said he did not care. What way is that to treat a customer. I will never go back rude service. They could care less about steady customers. No food is worth that kind if attitude. I work a block away.
In short, the place is filthy and the food expensive.- The background environment (kitchen and other direct parts of the place) is UNSANITARY!- The overall cleanliness needs to be improved.- $10/lb at the food bar is just too much for the quality of the food, the type of the place and the overall environment.- The minimum amount for a credit card purchase is ridiculous at this age.
In an area with plenty of open cafeterias along with penn stations concourse within walking distance, Essen does not provide any extra to win me over as a lunch regular.Hot buffet has the best selection nearby, but is accordingly overpriced. Asian, salad, sandwich, and other food stations are no better than what youll find at nearby Bistro, IGK, or Cafe R all within a few blocks.I only walk in when Im craving shumai from the hot buffet.
RUDE RUDE RUDE RUDE RUDE cashiers! Particularly the Japanese female who scoffs at customers. I used to be a regular customer...until TODAY. I paid using cash --- a combination of coins and paper bills. Then the Japanese female scolds me, in front of other customers, for giving her coins. EXCUSE ME? WOULD YOU RATHER have someone bring coins or would you rather NOT have a customer? VERY RUDE AND UNPROFESSIONAL. I didnt appreciate the fact that she scolded me and I also didnt like the fact that she scolded me in front of other customers. Essen 36th Street may have clean looking food but if you experience RUDE SERVICE, you will lose paying customers everytime! DO NOT GO HERE. SPEND YOUR HARD EARNED MONEY ELSEWHERE.
The food is ok and the people at the registers are nice but when you go to the back to get a wrap or quesadilla those men back there are rude and this is like the 3rd or 4th time one of them has been rude to me there is no need for that especially when I am paying for food for lunch
The breakfast sandwiches are terrible.Ive never seen anything like it. I tried one of the English muffins with bacon, egg and cheese and the cheese looked like melted plastic. I returned the sandwich and the toast with bacon, egg and cheese was worse. Disgusting!! I threw out the meal and eat nothing!

2019-09-17Ive been to the Essen in Madison Avenue and realized the food is same quality and same variety. Im really impressed with their excellence service and standards. This is indubitably my got-to for lunch. My friend that I brought also loved the food. This place is pretty close to the road and can be easily noticed from vehicle in normal traffic. Theres also wheelchair accessible entrance for the differently able.

2019-07-18Large variety of very good food at this “slow fast food” location on the corner of 8th Ave and 36th Street. The place offers select your own items and pay by the weight as well as panini sandwiches, burgers, salads and wood oven sandwiches. The staff is always courteous and always where gloves for cleanliness. I order a pizza burger (burger with mozzarella cheese and marinara sauce) deluxe with a bottled coke for a cost of $11.70 (not a bad price for such a large portion in NYC). The burger is very juicy and the steak fries are good too! I always see repeat customers at this location and would recommend others to try.

2019-07-30I ordered through Grubhub and the food arrived within an hour. Nothing was missing from the order. I ordered the chicken tacos platter it was a little spicy but okay. The Essen Cob Salad with dressing was too salty for me. I did enjoy the Chicken Club Pannini. I wasnt impressed with the food.

2019-10-28The food is fresh and delicious. There are so many options and dishes to choose from. They have already made hot food, but you can also order smoothies and a variety of Asian dishes. There is a good amount of seating upstairs and is not too cramped.

2022-03-27This place has convenience food options that are somewhat expensive for what you get but everything tasted fine. We had breakfast and you can get just about anything. They seem to have a wide variety of foods for other meals as well.
