Great homey neighborhood barVery good food. They have a yearly beard competition. The drawback was a poorly poured Guinness .
Cool place. Casual. Vegan choices. As well as the most amazing burger in town. Drinks did the job right.
Was a nice neighborhood watering hole. Sometimes a bit heavy on the hipster douchebag crowd, but overall its a dive with good food and a meh beer selection. Gone down hill.

Its a small and cozy place with a great vibe. I would highly recommend the wings. At first I ordered a burger that came with bacon without realizing it. When I told them, the waiter was great and got me another burger. The people were absolutely great. If youre ever in the neighborhood, I would recommend stopping in for a bite to eat.
Initial post: Food was great when they opened, but has fallen off lately. Too busy for their own good most nights. Staff kind of rude as a result. Definitely off of my list of places to go. I recommend you go somewhere else.Edit: Ive been back a few times since and have had mostly good experiences. The food is still good, and you should probably go try it out. Ive still found the bartender to be rude though, and its still hella busy on weekend nights. But a good place for dinner or drinks on a week night.
Great bar, great food, great drinks, but most of all GREAT PEOPLE!! Had a fun time, cant wait to go again. If your in the area I highly recommend you stop in!!

Ive been here more times than Id like to admit. And I couldnt even tell you why. The place is super trendy and really hipster friendly. But also not. The crowds have always been varied. The food is great! Ive gotten myself a reuben here and it was very tasty and super filling. Prices are what youd expect. The location is kind of odd and parking can sometimes be a pain. But even though I dont know why I keep coming here... I usually find myself here.
Drunk guy gave me a hat and said he never wanted to see me again. So that was pretty great. Then a ghost smashed our glasses (I swear we didnt touch them) and now I am afraid to go back because Im pretty sure everyone thinks we broke them. Fantastic spot though! Great prices and friendly people.
Nice little hole in the wall dive. This is our fave place to come when were looking for some drinks at a chill spot where we can actually hear each other speak. They have pretty good food as well if youre hungry.
Gooood food. Way better pub food than I was expecting. Cocktail I had was not great though. But if youre looking for some beer and a burger, fantastic place.

Outstanding burgers and a good atmosphere, and the selection of rotating drafts is small but usually interesting. Its the quintessential neighborhood pub, and my favorite place when I want a burger and a draft beer.
Great little neighborhood bar tucked away in the city. Beer is ice cold and cheap, staff is friendly.
Amazing jukebox, has a pool table, and has great dive bar food late. They brine and smoke their wings, so those are always a good bet. Neighborhood can be a bit sketchy later in the night but thats the city.
Great Irish pub with a comfortable neighborhood feel. Service was on spot, though menu was limited as they were shutting down the kitchen for the New Year. Suggestions? Try the wings and burritos.

What an awesome pub. We came in and had Buffalo wings and jalapeño boats and they were delicious. Friendly staff and the jukebox was a nice touch. If you are near Elmwood give this a go.

Some of my favorite ladies work here: the food and drinks arent too shabby either! This is a fantastic place to sit back, relax, and let loose: its a fun environment, particularly if you need a break from adulting! There is also something to be said for the jukebox selection: quite stellar, indeed!
Horrible in the middle of my food order the bartender actually stopped me from ordering and said the 3 girls that walked in were more important then my bill was 27$ I paid with a 100$ bill she took my 67$ change and put it in her tip jar then pretends like I dont exist 15 min later after showing her the receipt she argued but then gave me my change I watched that talk blonde Rob from about 7 drunk people they would order 1 beer pay with a 20 and she would PUT all the change in her tip jar good thing I dont drink because they obviously steal from there patrons Ill never go back
This place was a nice surprise. The food is great and good prices. The beer selection is wonderful. Id definitely go back
2nd best bar in buffalo
Havent been to Essex in years, still great juke box and chill vibe. Real deal dart board and scoring apparatus a plus too. Was very impressed with the BBQ and sides (albeit a bit pricy) still worth it since I dont eat out much...wouldve given 4 1/2 stars if allowed.
Went on a Sunday early evening and they were out of chicken, food was ok at best small side portions. Had the ribs which were chewy although great sauce. Wouldnt rush back to eat.

I went to the Essex Street Pub around 1987-1989. I was a graduate student at UB. The Essex Street Pub was excellent back then. As was Buffalo generally--and still is. I was surprised when I first stepped foot in the Essex Street Pub, having been led there by an English woman who was living in Buffalo, as it was in what is largely a residential area. I remember finding myself at a table off in the corner, with this very nice English woman, and I think she suggested that I get a Watney beer. Something like that. It was something English. After she took me to the Essex Street Pub I took her to Anacones on Bailey Avenue--and she like Anacones. I no longer live in Buffalo, though I visit often, and would love to visit the Essex Street Pub again. Fond memories! Its sad that Anacones is closed. Great beef-on-weck. And great pretzel rods with mustard. And the Anacone son was a very good guy.

Essex is always packed, it has the best jukebox in Buffalo, drinks are reasonable, and the owner is a pretty funny guy.

2021-05-10What a great place to eat and have a nice cold beer. Good people and a nice staff. The menu has stuff you only find here and it is very tasty. Friendly place and will be my new hang out as soon as I move closer!

2021-06-10Essex is a cozy corner bar. The drinks are reasonably priced and the staff is friendly. The menu and food prices are a bit limited and higher than usual right now because of covid, but thats understandable. Not a bad place to get some drinks and shoot some pool with your friends.
