Ethos in other cities:
When it comes to Greek, this is a favorite. Amazing Octopus Sharas and Melitzana Feta. The service has been great both times weve come for dinner. The Ethos chips are a bit too abundant for only 2 to share but still good. Definitely recommend the Htenia (scallops), which wer ordered the last time. Wide variety overall. Best Greek restaurant in the city, and the atmosphere at night is great.
Loved This Restaurant . The steamed sea bass was excellent, fresh, light, perfectly satisfying. The service was excellent. The staff was attentive and we didnt have to wait very long after finishing our appetizer before the entrees arrived. The ambiance is nice... mirrors.and murals. Its expensive yet warm and inviting. I cant wait to go back.
Lovely aesthetic , ethos chips , octopus and sesame feta are a must try from the appetizer menu .Big selection of wines and Greek wines . Amazing signature cocktails , try the midnight mojito , the smoke and fire and the blood orange margarita .Staff is experienced and friendly ...
Came here to celebrate a birthday dinner. Not only was the food incredible but every time they bring out a birthday cake, they dim the lights and blast music as the waiters carry the dessert with a lit sparkler to your table. It was a truly unique experience. Great food. Great service. Highly recommended for a birthday experience.
We wanted to end our holiday on a nice meal out but ended up being the worst place we went to all week. It felt like they just wanted us out the whole time. We walked in on a staff meeting rather than the door being locked. The menu doesnt offer any non alcoholic drinks and it doesnt explain what is exactly on the plate. The calamari was over done; I was chewing for ages. We ordered a medium done steak share and it was close to blue. The fries were very oily. We had 3 different servers and everyone seemed to avoid us a lot.
Love this place. Im not typically the biggest Mediterranean food fan... but Ethos Gallery 51 won me over. All the foods I typically dont like I wanted seconds of. Beautiful atmosphere, lively and cozy at once. Good drinks... excellent food... excellent service. I cant wait to go back.
Food was delicious but pricey. The worst part is that the servers never let you dine and talk with each other in peace but continue to get in your face pushing for more food and drinks. It was absolutely annoying. I know the servers live on tips, which are tied to the amount of the order, but there should be some limits to upselling! Will not come back.
This a real Greek restaurant. They want you to take your time and enjoy each course and the people you are there with. The service is impeccable. You can expect if you come for a special occasion it will be treated as such. The food is delicious. Seafood is extremely fresh. Go for a special night and you wont be disappointed. Not many places like it left in NY. It makes it even more rare that it is seemingly isolated in midtown east on 1st ave like a treasure just waiting to be found.
Have ordered from here too many times to count & the food has been delicious and high-quality every single time! Absolutely love their avgolemono soup, horiatiki salad, spanakopita, imam, and octapodi sharas plates for appetizers. Their kotopoulo (roasted chicken) and fish are great picks if youre not sure what to get for entrees. Overall, amazing, delicious, and quick every time!
We went there on an official lunch, there were about 20 of us. We had preordered and half the orders were messed up. The main issue was that the waiter doesn’t know how to treat customers. When one in our company said she had ordered the grilled octopus instead the fried calamari the waiter told her “No, you ordered the fried calamari”. This is just one example but similar things happened to most of us. They forgot to bring the side dishes of rice and lemon potatoes, and when one of us asked at the end of our meal, the waiter didn’t even apologize. The dessert portions (galaktobureko) were so tiny it was embarrassing. All of us commented on that. I’ve eaten in many Greek restaurants before and the one thing that is consistent are the large portions and hospitality. I didn’t feel that in this place. If this wasn’t an official lunch most of us would’ve complained to the manager, but in this case we all just left frustrated. The food was good, but the overall experience was not. I hope they can raise their service standards and I’d be happy to recommend them in the future.
Excellent Moussaka - ample bread, the apps are large sophisticated and beautifully prepared. lots of variety on the menu. Had the greek seafood paella and it was superb. super fresh and lots of variety to choose from. went with three friends for a great dinner and came out to less than I expected pricewise so good bang for buck as well. Go!
Is didnt have to cost much to dine here, but I took my wife here for her birthday and we got some of their price stuff w/ 3 alcoholic drinks. The food was good and the service excellent. Very genuine hospitality. They gave us 2 shots of Greek liquor and a desert platter on the house for her bday. The Greek liquor is a must try. Sweet, strong and tasty liquor. Also try the Rhode Island. Its a zesty lemon alcoholic beverage out of this world. The stuffed grape leaves were on point. The steak seasoned and cooked to perfection. My wife would have liked a little more sea food in her seafood orzo dish. Very nice decor and atmosphere. The attribute is dressy casual, but not quite formal.Absolutely loved our experience here.
Tomatoes arent sweet, surprising for tomato Greek Salad! Grilled Prawns are great and highly recommended!! Cant go wrong with this dish. As you become a regular here they are much more welcoming than when i forst started coming. Increasing my review to 4 stars from 3.
This is one of the best Greek restaurants Ive ever been to. I have been several times and am always extremely pleased with the food. Tastes just like what my Greek family cooked me as a child. The staff are friendly and professional, but it gets busy on Friday and saturday evenings, so make sure you make a reservation if you want a spot without a wait!
Came here for my bachelorette party dinner and it could not have been more perfect! The restaurant itself is stunning and so classy. Every bite of food was delicious, especially the calamari. And the wait staff went above and beyond. When my friends mentioned it was my bachelorette party, they even brought out a complimentary dessert platter and cocktails. Definitely plan to come back. It would also make a great date spot. HIGHLY recommend!
Great small plates, underwhelming and over expensive main dishes. If you just order a bunch of small plates and share amongst your group, youll leave pretty happy even though its still on the more expensive side. The entrees on the other hand arent that great and will leave you unsatisfied and broke. The ambiance is wonderful and their birthday wishes are incredibly fun!
Dine at Ethos regularly with my dear M50 girlfriends. The menu is incredibly focused. I really like a tight menu. Generally one can rest assured of freshness and quality when a restaurant has a a short range from which to select. The wait staff is energized. They are articulate when questions regarding the menu are asked. They are extremely professional and help orchestrate the movement of tables as patrons conclude their meals. A really sophisticated rhythm and seriousness which only can be achieved if their is a level of stability in the ranks. The owner is generally on hand to keep the peace and has excellent host skills.Last night I did take out from Ethos. A friend was hosting and I offered to bring some APPS from Ethos. The selections were a hit, along with the Hostessues pigs in a blanket. I admit now that I consumed six of the little frankfurters. Fantastic!!!And then we played an interesting card game with fill in the blank statement cards and a range of quirky sentences, phrases all of which could be completed in funny to funniest !!! Definitely, a great evening with terrific Ethos APS...
I called tonight and asked for best grilled fish. Christian recommended the red snapper. After delivery I called them back and I had to post to say, it was the BEST fish I ever had. I always order from them branzino, octopus or lobster or mussels and Im always happy with what I get, the food is always perfect and when you call everyone is so nice and helpful! And I always have fish out in different restaurants. But this tonight again, was the best fish I ever had. Keep it up Ethos!!!! See u next week! Thank you again. VK
The simple and beautiful sea-side decor went perfectly with our absolutely delicious dinner. Ive worked in Greece and tried the best of the best foods from NYC to the Cyclades, and Ethos is firmly among the top of my list. My husband and I enjoyed a vine-ripe tomato and feta salad, haloumi, and an extremely tasteful mushrooms in a lemon sauce (must order!). We had snapper and dorado as our main dishes - absolutely fresh and very generous in size. We could have shared one, especially given the variety of appetizers we ordered. Dessert - too good for words. This was our anniversary dinner, and we were treated like special guests. The complimentary champagne drinks were a lovely, delicious touch. The talented bartender also created a special mixed drink for my hard-to-please whiskey-drinking husband, which he loved. Make a reservation - this place filled up quickly on a Sunday evening after 7 p.m.
Ethos has excellent decor, with great seating as well. I love the layout of the entire place and the tissue floor decor is so unique that it makes the entire space look like something from another country, as if youve been transplanted to the Greek isles. The servers here are very attentive and accommodating and the food is pretty good. Since this is a greek spot, I recommend the fish and seafood dishes over the meats, as they are done better here. The lamb chops were good, but the salmon and other fishes on the menu are better.
Had a wonderful dinner at Ethos tonight! Were vegetarians and were delighted to find a wonderful selection of items on the menu (unusual in a Greek restaurant). The Imam, Gigantes, Feta Saganaki and Greek Salad were all delicious, and the highlight had to be the wonderful service from both the host as well as our waiters. They brought out water for our dog, without us asking, and were kind and attentive throughout. They even brought complimentary dessert to the table at the end, which was the loveliest gesture. Seems like a lot of people were celebrating special occasions inside as we saw staff play lively Greek music snd bring out sparklers a few times. Will definitely be back.
I thought we were going to a classy restaurant, but our experience was like we went to a (somewhat trashy) club. The restaurant was very loud and we needed to yell at each other for the entire dinner. The worst part was, for every 5-10 minutes, they dimed the light and turned on club style loud music. Then some waiters came out with those small fireworks the same as in the clubs when someone orders a bottle. I was not sure why. The loud music lasted about 5 min each time. Our conversion was constantly interrupted. The food was not bad. But comparing to restaurants with the same prince range, Avra (also Greek) on 48th is much better.
It would come as no surprise to me if my meal at Ethos was interrupted by a Barry Manilow set. This place reeks of 1980s premium quality vintage gold. The menu and decor is perhaps slightly dated, but the food is Greek and therefore somewhere between good and exceptional. I had a delicious lamb shank, served on a bed of tomato based rice. The menu could do with an update to bring it into the 21st century, but I suspect you could make a similar conclusion about wider Greek society, but therein lies its attraction. Quite paradoxical. If youre in this part of town and after an authentic slice of hellenic culture then look no further than Ethos Gallery.
The music was blaring and the acoustics horrible. We had great difficulty hearing each other.I was treated rudely when I entered by the maitre d who would not seat me at the table, which was in the corner and empty.BUT_he later sat a gentleman at his table alone before his party came.He did not want me standing and kept pushing me to sit at the bar.The sauvignon blanc tasted rancid. The lamb chops were so salty, I could hardly eat them and they were not good.I would NEVER return to this restaurant again.
If you have some extra cash to spend and want to have a very nice lunch or dinner, I would recommend Ethos to the fullest. The ambience and feel of a Greek island is strong. Its also airy and comfortable and the food is amazing. Most of the entrees are family style, so even though the price is hefty if just one person is eating from an entrée, its well worth it, especially if you are with a party. The one appetizer that blew my mind, and I was addicted to was the Octapodi Sharas. At $24, there is enough to share between two people, but youll want double. The Greek salad- Horiatiki at $20 is another dish that can feed 2-3 people. Again if youre willing to drop around $30-$50 a person, not counting alcohol (I would recommend sharing a bottle of wine), Ethos is a must visit restaurant. Its right down the street from the UN, so the area is very nice.
Food was ok, service was slow. We waited for our main course too long asking the waiter twice about it. The check in the end was wrong(too high), and ever higher after we complained, it was ridiculous. Finally got the check with the right amount, without an apology or the smallest compensation.
They used to be good, but now its a cantina. Besides, thee owner makes this place very unpleasant. He fired all the nice and good people who worked there and there is NO FUN any more!! There used to be music and dancing late on the wekends.THE FOOD IS NOT AS GOOD EITHER. BETTER GO TO AVRA
I made a reservation for two. Upon arriving on time, I was offered one of their nasty outside sidewalk tables, close to people walking their dogs and urinating and defecating near the tables. I declined and asked for one of the several indoor tables for two that were unused. They told me that it would be a long wait for one of those tables. I left. Thank God this is Manhattan and we have lots of choices.
The place seems to have been redone recently. They still have no idea how to manage reservations. We waited 45 minutes for our supposedly confirmed online reservation, and then we just left, it didnt seem like theyd have a table ready anytime soon. Waste of time, and rude, given that they accepted an online reservation with a specific time. Some feta salad is not worth an hours wait, sorry.
Must haves include the tzatziki and the grilled octopus as starters. Both were super fresh and the octopus was different from any other preparation if had. Slightly charred and not at all rubbery. For my main, the bronzini was prepared simply but was quite good. Theyll even let you pick out your own fish, if thats your thing!
I have no idea how the food is. Although we had a reservation, we were told that wed have to eat outside. When we chose a table on the side street rather than the noisy, windy avenue, we were told we couldnt have it because it was reserved by the owner. Clearly they werent interested in having us as customers, so we went elsewhere.
I went to Ethos as part of a Greek Cooking class, for which Ethos sells discount tickets on Groupon and Gilt (maybe other places as well). What they offer is not a cooking class at all - none of the students actually cut, chopped, seasoned or had their hands on any knife or food item. This was simply a demonstration of a few knife skills and combination of seasonings which are Greek. The chef who was conducting the demonstration, became tense and impatient when some of the attendees asked about some variations. Granted, the variations took it away from being traditional Greek, but there was no reason to get snippy. We did get to eat what the chef prepared. Under-seasoned and tremendously oily Greek salad, chicken and potatoes.I could not recommend Athos Gallery 51 to anyone.

2022-06-12This is a very nice hidden gem to eat at! The service is outstanding, the atmosphere is very nice. I am a very picky eater, but was very satisfied with this food! The food was very well prepared and aesthetically pleasing. This is for sure a fine dining experience. I highly recommend eating here! This would be a great place to take a date!

2022-06-23Wanted to try someplace new for lunch with a friend. Not only is this place beautiful, it makes you feel like you are on vacation to some exotic Greek destination. Add on top of that warm and inviting service and excellent food. This is my new favorite place!

2022-04-30Update 4/29: We initially fell in love with this place because of the quality of the ingredients. Our second visit was disappointing. The vegetables were not ripe, the ethos chips not as tasty and more oily, and the fish was bland. None of the lovely Euro music as before, just American pop. An off day or due to the new management? Hoping to come back and give it another shot to relive our first experience.—Excellent and true Greek food (my boyfriend is from Greece and was astonished by the quality). Loved the spanakopita, ethos chips, and tomato salad. Food is farm to table and vegetables taste out of this world (European style). We immediately asked where they source their produce after recognizing the distinct taste in their tomatoes. Even their olive oil is very clearly from Greece once you try it. Very romantic and cozy. Will be back!

2021-12-15I live locally. I have walked past Ethos many times. I love Mediterranean and fresh fish. I came by on a Tuesday night around 8pm. The friendly host found us a perfect corner table in the bar area. Then candle light and music set the tone for a nice dining experience. We had the Greek salad and baked eggplant to start. Very fresh ingredients with a lot of flavor. We finished with the whole fish Dorado, excellent and sole.I will definitely come back to this neighborhood gem.

2022-03-20Nice location and great cocktails but food and service was subpar. Staff interrupted 3 times just 10 min after receiving appetizers asking if we were ready for next course, once wouldve been fine but we ended up feeling rushed. ordered lamb chops medium rare and they were fully cooked. Sent them back and second batch was still overcooked. Shrimp linguine dish was overcooked and underseasoned. Staff was apologetic so maybe it was an off night for the restaurant. The Tomato salad & zucchini chips were delicious.

2017-09-30Great food, opulent decor, and Greek atmosphere. The lump crab meat with mustard aioli was top notch. I also ordered the moussaka and brought the lamb instead. It was in fact a serendipitous moment and the lamb tasted awesome.
