You can’t beat this iconic throwback that will always result in great stories, great entertainment, and a vibe that makes you forget you’re on the UES… from the retro decor, throwback DJ sets, and addictive burgers, Ethyl’s is an unpretentious time capsule that never disappoints.
This was one of the coolest places Ive been in NY. Ive been to a couple of nice bars here in the city, but the vibe here is awesome. I didnt hear one song I didnt like, and the food was outstanding. Adam was such a great host and the staff was on point with everything. Highly recommend this place. Great spot.
Come here pretty often.. honestly the servers arent always the nicest but aside from that, this is a super fun place with great music, dancers, and always some classic movie playing on tv. Bingo some nights is fun and different. Drinks are good and affordable. Also, surprisingly good burgers and snacks. Gets pretty crowded on weekends.
Interesting place, to say the least. Cool Disco themed bar and grill with old 70s movies playing on their screens during the day and Disco music with videos on the weekends. Food is also actually pretty good! A cool local spot to go dance on a Saturday night if you are craving old school disco jams ;)
This place is great. Awesome 70s disco music and vibes, nice dancefloor with a friendly crowd and some regulars/locals. The age range varied from mid 20s to late 50s but somehow it all works together. If youre looking for a good night of dancing without all the downsides of a standart nightclub (i.e creepers, packed, smoke) this is a place for you. Also, entrance is free ;)
If you don’t like a retro vibe, just stay away and let us enjoy. 80s and 90s music, posters and vibe. Lots of fun and reasonable drink prices. There’s a bit of an odd mix between dressed up women in tune with the vibe/era and ‘bro-fist dudes’ but otherwise a good time for all.
Solid, good bar. This would have been everyones go-to neighborhood bar if the neighborhood was the Lower of the East Sides. But being on the Upper East Side, it is something of a novelty with its cool, funky, retro vibe. But most importantly, their Happy Hour $5 Burgers are totally worth clocking out earlier with the headache excuse. Friendly, attentive service and good beer selection too!
Amazing atmosphere, cool music, feel good vibes. Nice staff, good, friendly service with a smile. Really enjoyed our brief time here, will definitely return. Great happy hour food & drink, awesome value for money & the disco curds are just delicious, as well as the cinco dolla burger. Thought the French onion mac n cheese was overpriced & burnt in comparison. Overall awesome though.
Im from CA and have been to many a dance bar. This place is amazing! $5 burger is delicious. Go-Go dancers have moves and kept the vibe up all night. Worked up a good sweat dancing to the 70s music. Will definitely be back next time Im in NY!Yea its pretty loud, but the FUNK is best played at MAX volume! Yasss!! lol
Great place, and the $5 burger is real. But Im uncomfortable with the atmosphere and themes and what they mean about women. I understand kitsch and nostalgia but take a look around-- have we really come that far? And are you really sure that all the objectifying and go-go dancing is ironic? Look, enjoy it if you like-- all Im saying is its not the place for a radical feminist like this guy.
This is my regular spot for a relaxed weekday drink. Weekend has girls dancing on the bar and place is packed full of bridge and tunnel people so I would avoid it then unless that is your crowd. Atmosphere is punk with a bit of 70s disco flare. They play old movies and dirty cartoons on tvs.
Fun atmosphere, good 70s rock and disco music, space to dance, and very friendly and hospitable bartenders and waitstaff. My burger was ridiculously good for $5 and our excellent waitress kept the Fat Tire pouring all night long.Docking a star for the owner, who is very unpleasant. I wish I didnt interact with him but he gave us no choice. Try to avoid him if possible. Older macho Italian guy who gets off on being a chadrool. Kinda makes me sad my money went in his pocket. He didnt ruin our good time, though!
Some of the worst service I’ve ever had and I’m really not expecting much when I go to a bar. We grabbed a high top in the bar area and were told it was table service — great! The waitress took our initial order and then as it got busier (Friday night) we never saw her again. After our first round had been cleared and no one asked if we wanted another, one of us went up to the bar to get another round and our waitress came over and told us not to do that and that she’d bring our check over without asking us if we’d like more food or drink. We settled up but were still working on our drinks. Then she came over and told us we had 10-15 more minutes at the table because she had a reservation coming....2 minutes later she comes to seat her reservation and tells us we had to go then. The bussers were pushy and rude and the drinks were watered down.Don’t waste your money.
A really really fun bar retroactive to the seventies! It is actually as if one stepped back in time to my beloved 70s. There is one magnificent bartender called Gavi, who isthe handsomest guy. Also, they have strippers, three or four times a week. This bar is a must for anyone who lived and thrived in the seventies....I dont know what has happened to this bar lately. There is one Norwegian female bartender who castrates every single person who enters the bar. I will never go to this place again as long as I live.
Love the vibe, great fun. But, dont charge me extra for ice(!) And for the olives in my martini(!) !! Also, dont jack $5 well drinks to $10 after happy hour. But, free live entertainment is great. Food is tops. 4 stars if you fix the first few issues. That said, I still love you enough to stop whenever Im in that nabe.
Interesting - kitschy place, with a bit of a funky vibe. Their menu is short and focused on very typical bar grub. Good execution, but nothing special to go out of your way for.We had the misfortune of going there while they must have been hosting some manner of social mdeia event. You can only watch a certain number of idiots take food photos before you get fed up and say we gotta go.
I came back to this bar after 2 years and was kicked out by Justin the “manager”. I was sitting outside with my dog. It started raining and the waitress told us we can wait inside until the rain stops. We went in and Justin immediately kicked us out. My friend and I had a full beer that we just ordered. He was so unprofessional and rude. He didn’t let us wait near the front door until the rain stopped. The rain stopped 5 minutes after we were kicked out. I just had the worse experience of my life. I have never been kicked out of a bar and I wasn’t even drunk. He didn’t even let me explain that the waitress offered us to come inside for a few minutes. He asked me to shut up and get out. I understand that dogs are not allowed in a bar and I was not trying to impose it. It just started raining hard for a few minutes. It literally stopped 5 minutes after. I would appreciate if someone else from that bar contact me, so we can discuss in detail. This should not happen to anyone else.
The service:Had the worst waitresses. She was constantly on her phone, and was so busy in her phone conversation that she never attended to our table.(mind you we where the only customers in the building) she was extremely rude, and impatient with us.The food:The food was disgusting. The fires were burned, the chicken was over cooked and dry. All the food taste like it was cooked in old cooking oil. Just disgusting! We spoke to manager and got him to take off majority of the food because we refused to eat it and pay for itThe drinks:We had a total of four drinks and I must say they both were nasty. The first was some sort of a rum punch and it taste like pure grapefruit juice. We had to ask if liquor was in it. It was bitter, sour and taste like pure juice, so we had them exchange it for something else. By the time the second drinks got to us ( becuz the waitresses was busy on her phone our drinks sat at the bar until she was done with her phone conversation) the ice had melted and made the drink taste like water with a splash of cool aid in it . It was disgusting.Overall will not be returning to this place
I was threatened to be raped and murdered by a man and his friends while I was out with my coworkers at this bar. I said excuse me to a large man who shoved me and he started cursing me out, threatening me and my friends, including taking pictures and coming over to say to watch myself on my way home. The bar tenders tried to charge their own drinks that they took with us to our tab and didnt alert us to when we started ordering after happy hour. Our bill was nearly 300 when it first arrived. I had to argue at the end of a long work week with them about how poorly they kept their records and bills. We didnt feel safe telling management about the threats made to us and the intimidation and rape threats made to us at the bar. Dont go here. I had to stay on the phone with my friend until I went home and I still dont know what the guy who threatened me did with my photos. Im scared to at the least but I refuse to be bullied by white men with low self esteem that gets people killed. This bar fostered this attitude. Avoid and boycott.
Bill had extra drinks. They removed but then made max gratuity mandatory. Tried to give free shots with still extra drink on bill. Said no just please correct. Staff tries to justify value of free shots. Stand our ground. Staff gets more angry at us. Finally bill correct but gratuity still mandatory at 20% for what had become unbearable service. Paid and left in frustration. F that place
Usually like the place, ran into the bar owner tho who was clearly racist didnt want to let in 3 black gay guys in because apparently they werent letting else in. And right in front of us let every white person and was open a hour and half longer. We seen this waiting for our friends still inside. Maybe the owner need to work that gut into a better attitude
A fairly odd place at times, and at other times fun, unique, and interesting. Not a spot you expect to find on the UES. Points off for the bouncer hollering at everyone to get out with no warning at around 3:30, maybe only 10 minutes after last call. Couldnt finish our drinks and honestly felt quite threatened to leave.
This is a cute place but I just paid 8 bucks for a tiny bacon cheeseburger and 5 bucks for a shot drink. I would have walked out but 1. Im in the service industry also. 2. That is bad karma and 3. I am fluffy and delicious and cant run that fast. Save this place for a date and let him spend his money.
Sooo I love this place. Used to come here allllll the time precovid.I tried calling and going on their website, but I couldn’t tell if they were open. I went on night on a Thursday or Friday after 5 and they were closed. Does anyone know if they are closed for good? :(
Do they ever pick up the phone?? Food was mediocre, fries were burned. Service non-existent.. The place is divey so I wasnt expecting anything better. I also left something important by accident and called them several times but they never picked up the phone and lost it. Unfortunatley I was visiting so I couldnt go back in person. Never again.
Take a stroll back to life in 80s NYC, with grit, classic posters, memorabilia and DJs spinning period sets. Have a $5 burger and sip from a vintage plastic glass while contemplating what youve done with your life since then or wondering why you were born a little too late.
Fun ambiance and vibe (it is a go-go after all)Be warned, if you go on a busier evening (fri/sat), staff is constantly walking through groups of people and can be very touchy (not in inappropriate way, but our lower backs and shoulders got like 20 pats throughout the evening).

2022-07-09Always a fun place. GO-GO dancers on the bar, obscure 70s and 80s movies, 80s music and a great crowd.

2018-11-09Fun atmosphere and great bar food at this UES spot. Theres a new French Dip Burger called the French Connection thats a must, and a Pu Pu Platter with some great fried apps thats perfect for a few people to split - plus their famously inexpensive (and tasty) FiDolla burger (single is $5, double is $5) with a number of variations. Theres also a great drink menu, and they have gogo dancers once or twice a week to liven things up.

2018-11-11Great place for an after party burger. Delicious french fries and awesome kind service. We got there when it as their last call but they cooked for us and allow us to get the best after party dinner.

2019-06-04Ethyls is a time. The kind of time you have is up to you. Its not fancy. Its not for everyone. But if youre looking to let loose, have a drink, and dance to some retro music, theres a good chance youll be in good company. The bar features cabaret dancers (I mean literally on the bar), and Im not going to lie, their Fi-Dolla cheeseburger is pretty outstanding.

2019-02-14The food was budget friendly and tasty, the drinks were amazing! I ordered two rounds of the Hot Pants Punch, it was out of this world. Would have given it five stars, but the music was too loud, I couldn’t hear a thing.

2020-02-17A tragedy if Ive ever seen one. A 70s go-go bar with so much potential, yet laden with incompetent and rude staff. To start, the list of rulesposted on the front door are not only overwhelming and exhausting, but they are longer and arguably more complex than their cocktail menu. Getting into the bar is more challenging than going through airport security -- theyll make you stand in the cold for no reason. Then, you are forced to buy a ticket for $15 - multiple people who look very serious and have flashlights will confirm your purchase. Avoid drinks with jalapeño unless you are ready for a night of a burning mouth, indigestion and have Pepcid on hand. At this point, youll want to have fun, but the PTSD from entry and burning mouth have already put a damper on the evening.I admire the crowd that they attract, but the staff is extremely unfriendly. I was told multiple times that I was standing too close to a reserved seat which was really just a table that had been empty for over an hour easily. See photo of the waitress to know who you should avoid, although maybe its best to just avoid this bar altogether.

2021-04-28Fun dive bar with a great happy hour. Known for their $5 burger which is really good actually. They also have really good wings that they have a special on Wednesdays (#wingWednesday) which includes their Valentina hot wings and a cocktail. Ive tried their classic $5 burger which is pretty good. Its more of a slider, but its simple and delicious. Good place to check out if youre in the area.

2021-08-06I legit love this place. The only good place on the UES for dancing. Also, their cheeseburgers are very good and well-priced. The music is always on point and usually very busy - but always able to get drinks / service. Very cool vibes.
