Renters beware, the regular rate increases which are not made obvious up front are annoying, within a year my rate has increased twice from $72 to $99 and I am now seriously considering moving out. No issues with the staff and facility, both have been satisfactory for my purposes. The elevator has been out of service on occasion which I can tolerate.
Couldn’t say enough good things about Extra Space Storage!We rented a unit in their Dumbo location and from the very beginning every single person we dealt with was so helpful and patient.Their rates are also so competitive, the cheapest we found in Brooklyn.Over all just a great experience. One we were pleasantly surprised by! :)
I have been storing my stuff at Extra Space Storage for some time now, and it is always clean and well maintained. The staff is wonderful, with a special shout out to Diamond and Ashley who have been SUPER helpful. Can’t thank them enough!
Across the span of 2 days and multiple visits, the team at the 160 John Street location went out of their way to help walk me through the process, making several efforts to highlight my storage space options and remedy a scheduling issue that had occurred.They reached out to other warehouses, and went over several choices that would work best for my needs. I received numerous helpful calls, texts and emails along with the in-person assistance from quite a few staff members all working to guide me along and make as pleasant of an experience as could have been hoped for during my difficult move.
I arrived at 4:25pm on a Sunday and store manager Linda informed me that the facility hours only extend to 4pm on Sundays. Nonetheless, she allowed me access since I only had a single item to bring to my unit, and since other people were still in the building. I really appreciated her accommodating me.Additionally, I wish to communicate my frustration with the unreasonably restrictive facility hours; two suggestions: (1) the hours should be extended or (2) those with storage units should be allowed after-hours access with a gate code. Even if #2 necessitated an after hours security guard, this would be a very small incremental cost on top of existing leasing costs, for great added value to the storage facility.Thank you for your consideration.
The building itself may be a little dated but the staff absolutely make up for it! Every staff member has gone above and beyond to make my experience as smooth as possible. Extra thanks go to Diamond and Ashley for taking extra care of my experience at Extra Space!

Great and easy set up. Diamond, the employee who worked there, is literally a gem. She lives up to her name. She deserves a raise and promotion. She made the experience a pleasure.
The staff was so helpful and accommodating to our needs. TBH, the building is old and definitely has some wear & tear but it makes up for it in price and the staff.

This place was great when it was Tuck it Away storage. Since extra space took it over it’s a mess and the prices have gotten crazy. Elevators never work, and I’ve been stuck in their passenger elevator twice. Avoid this place.

To sum this up quick.. JUST STAY AWAY FROM ANY SUPER LOW PRICES. They pull you in with a reasonable rate and then increase your rent repeatedly. I started with a $40 unit, that increased 50% to $60. Fine. Then this month, I look at my bill, it went from $60 to $105! Thats absolutely absurd. They give you a lame excuse about market rates and giving a 30 day notice. Funny thing, I get random spam calls from their office reminding me to pay my bill (which Im never late on) but they wont call to say hey, your rates are increasing next month. They email me spam, but they wont email to inform me about a rent increase. Instead a rep at the office tells me a letter was mailed out to inform customers. Went through all my December mail, and nothing from the storage unit. These practices are seriously unfair to people that are lured in with affordable prices that fit their budget. Meanwhile they beat their 3rd quarter financials and are up over 20% in revenue and 36% in profits, and they still want to hurt customers pockets. I am currently disputing what will be my last month of rent with this company due to a lack of clear and untimely communication on their behalf. After that I am moving my stuff out to a more reputable location that does not inflate their unit prices as frequently and as drastically as Extra Space does. If this was a modern facility, with decent units with lighting, fine, increases are understandable, but this location is FAR from that. The people that work there are cool, yea.. but who cares.. this 1 star is for the way this company is run and how they like to use junk generic excuses that will go just like thisExtra Space Storage would like to thank ****** for reaching out. We understand the frustration and hope to clarify. Extra Space does review rates periodically which are based on the current market value for that specific sized unit. Rental agreements with Extra Space are strictly month-to-month, therefore rates are not guaranteed for any specified amount of time. Pursuant to section 4 of the lease agreement that Ms. ******** signed Customer’s Rental Terms May Change with 30 Days Notice. Customer acknowledges this Lease is month to month and that Owner may change or increase Customer’s Monthly Rental Charge, fees and charges, due to changes in market conditions or for any other reason at any time upon 30 days’ notice to Customer. Owner may send notice to Customer’s email address or by any other method of notice described in Section 30 below... blah blah blahIts flat out wrong. 30 days is not enough time to say hey, thats too expensive for me, let me find another place, get a vehicle and move my stuff out before I get stuck with a bill I cant maintain. Then when you never receive a communication of an increase, youre just stuck with a bill. Good job guys! Way to stick it to your customers! 👍

Easy and to the point. This location made it easy to book online at a reasonable price, drop off items, pick them up, and then close out our account without any hassle. I have to commend the staff for being extra helpful and informative, especially during a hectic time in our lives where we were relocating to NYC. Specifically both Esana and Steffon made the drop off and pick up of our items a breeze. Highly recommended location if you need temporary storage.
I give this storage facility 5 stars - it is clean, well organized, and the staff is quick and clear to communicate. From my initial email to voice my interest in renting a storage unit to move-in, everything was smooth and the process/pricing was exactly as described. Ive had horror stories from other storage companies but feel confident in this Extra Space Storage Dumbo location. Jose and the rest of the team have been great - he actually let me know of a $50 refund you can put towards your moving expenses (moving vehicle rental, hiring movers, etc..) which I would have otherwise not known about. I really appreciate that!
I have nothing but amazing things to say about this storage place. The price but mostly ASHLEY was incredible from start to finish. She was the most helpful person I’ve met. She found us a storage unit within our budget went over and beyond with her customer service. Our move in and out was smooth and Ashley made sure she was on hand to help. Ashley is superb at her job and has excellent customer service and always has a smile. She is the person that makes this location 5+* .

Excellent staff, very helpful. The elevators are often out of service, and that was difficult being in the 9th floor when I first moved in. My rent went up exponentially. Be careful to read the fine print.

Ive been at the storage for about 4 years now. I have 3 units. What I like about using the storage is the employees are very helpful. The price for renting the units are very responsible and the location has been totally renovated. What more can you ask.

The staff is helpful and find ways to accommodate you. Only issue is that sometimes they park their cars on the cargo spots and block the ramps to access the storage units. Besides that... pretty solid spot

I love the location, price and cleanliness. But they could use more staff (someone to do the elevator) and provide a better security. I can just walk in with no questions. The elevator is always down for days.

Very easy process. Reserved online, got a phone call within a few minutes to confirm and explain the conditions. We were able to show up whenever we were ready (I think the reservation holds for 30 days?) Ashley was at the desk to help check us in, helped bring our items up the elevator, and escorted us to our unit. She brought us a ladder (we got an upper unit) and even waited for us at the elevator to bring us back down. Super friendly service :)
I went to the John Street location and was very pleased with the quality of service and attention provided by Ashley Colon. She was warm and friendly (for a early morning) and knowledgeable about the facility and rooms available.
Jose and ‘Yes’ are a great duo. The staff was very patient with me and helped me find the perfect storage solution for my 1-bedroom apartment. The team is very knowledgeable and pretty fun to work with. I have used other storage facilities in the past and the attention to detail wasn’t even close to the Extra Space Storage - Dumbo Team!

Just rented from Extra Space and cant be more than happy to store my stuff with Jay and team. Jay is absolutely amazing and super helpful. And by helpful I mean Jay goes out of his way to help you any way he can, including helping you to move your stuff into your unit.Every customer who walked into the office knew Jay and greeted him with smiles. Im now one of those happy customers who will greet Jay with smiles anytime I come by to grab something from my storage unit.

Very great experience. Help a friend of mine move in. The manager Marlon was so helpful. He explained everything to us, helped us with packing supplies showed us the rooms and suggested the size that would best work for us. Very clean and customer servive was key for me. Kiaa (at the 160 John St. location) has outstanding customer service and went OUT OF HER WAY to assist my boyfriend and I last night (01.25.2019). I cannot fully express how amazed I am at the level of service we received at the END of her shift- right through to her staying late to thoroughly oversee the process. Her genuine helpfulness was surprising and appreciated. I highly recommend using this facility as an affordable storage option.
Both DeAsia and Jose were super helpful, nice and friendly. The location is further away from busy roads and that makes it easy to park which is so important. My experience with them has been absolutely great! Highly recommended!
Just moved in my stuff in yesterday. showed up just barely before closing and James kindly stayed open late so that I could get everything in. super friendly, great service!update: staff is still great, but for sure this place is dank. I guess you get what you pay for, because this is definitely the inexpensive storage option around by a long shot. If all you need is a place to put your stuff and arent concerned with the bells and whistles, I would still recommend.
Had the most easy and fast experience here. It was a breeze and the representative there really helped me navigate where/what I needed. I had to ask for his name, Marlon Joseph, because he is honestly the most competent I have seen in all my storage using experience thus far. I am a permanent customer now.
I cant speak more highly of Extra Space. Really. James was a dream. I went there expecting typical NYC service (grumpy people, lots of hidden fees, etc) and instead I received outstanding, friendly, and honest service. They were genuine and there were no hidden costs. James was incredibly explanatory and helpful in the process. He made sure I was in and out very quickly and painlessly. I would highly recommend.

Jose helped us better than we possibly could have imagined. He was kind, professional, patient and super helpful. We realllllyy wanted to get a smaller unit, but were worried wed need a bigger one. Jose showed us three options and assured us the smallest (and cheapest) was all we needed. Once everything was loaded in, he was right! Super nice, low pressure atmosphere — thanks!
I chose extra space storage because I got a great deal for the space I chose. The entire process on signing the space out and moving my things in was very easy. I came in super late that day and the place was going to close in 1 hr and 15 mins. I haven’t fully brought all my stuff in so my friend went back to get the rest of my stuff while I signed the lease. James was very helpful and accommodating. While my friend went to get my stuff, he showed me my unit and explained the contract to me prior to signing. When my friend did arrive, we only had 15 minutes to put everything in storage before it closed. Even though we rushed, we still went over the time limit but James was very nice and stayed until we were done. I highly recommend this place. Great service!

I had a very pleasant moving experience. Marlon the store manager was very prompt with the freight elevator and made sure we were in and out of the facilities very quickly. All my items in my unit were clean after being stored there for 10 months. Would use this space again for my storage needs.

Excellent service - Jules and Consuela went above and beyond to help us - we had to move a U-Haul truck full of stuff. Letting us pull the truck by the loading dock alone cut the time and overall effort in half. Cant say enough positives about Jules and his customer focus.

The team here is great and accommodating, especially Ashley. When someone was taking to long with the elevator she walked up all ten floors to bring it down for me.The staff is what makes renting here worth it.
Great experience, it was my 1st time using storage and Jose made it easy. I was in a rush trying to get my things put away safe and he made the entire process simple. I would definitely refer friends and family to him and his staff.
I can’t speak highly enough of the team at Extra Space storage. We were not the easiest tenant/client (a team member of ours lost our key) and Jules, Kia, Jose and team went above and beyond to help us out. Jules really took the extra mile in helping us strategize about our options with our space. Things are neat and clean. Office is bright. Would recommend if you’re looking for storage in the Dumbo area.

Great guys working on site down in Brooklyn. They do their best to be kind and helpful. They dont communicate well with one another or with customers on what the rules of storage rental are. I had to go back and forth several times because of so much miscommunication. Someof their affiliates working in construction are so unprofessional. I think I would prefer to rent a sealed storage space where airtight crates are made readily available as opposed to cardboard boxes since recent renovation by this so called construction company has now negatively affected the quality of my storage space (dusty white flakes of paint all over my stuff), as well as my overall experience with the Extra Space Storage team, who always did try their best to accommodate me. I think it was a bad case of too little too late for me. Now I am left feeling really really disappointed. That being said, I am really grateful for the kind response (below), from the owner. Hopefully we reach some kind of a resolution.
Jose M. Ramirez is an excellent manager with compassion and understanding of how to work with his customers. He patiently walked my through the process when I had a problem with my locks in my 2 units. He patiently listened to my problem and addressed it quickly. He is a hands on manager who was able to find a solution and efficiently assisted me.
James was very accommodating from the beginning to end of the process. Everyone here has been so sweet and pleasant to work with. I called with very short notice, and Leslie on the phone found the the perfect sized storage in such a quick amount of time. I will definitely use them again in the future!
I had taken out a unit in this location under the previous ownership of Tuck-It-Away Storage. By comparison, Extra Space coming in and taking over the operation is LIGHT YEARS better than before.I went in to move into a smaller sized unit, so when it came to switching and then moving my items, the staff were professional, helpful, easily engaging, pleasant, and enjoyable to be around.
The guys always make my visit to my unit very plesant. Most days when I come in James is the one who is their and his friendly and positive attitude goes a long way. Hes very helpful and knowledgeable with storage. Excellent customer service.

We arrived late afternoon before a holiday, frantic to secure storage space in a different state before our relocation. Marlon was as cool and calm as they come. He had all of the paperwork prepared before we arrived, and our drive there was only 10 minutes! He must have dropped everything when we called his location. In any case, this was an easy and terrific experience and we highly recommend ExtraSpace Storage!

Ive been a customer since its Tuck it Away days. Jules, Brenda (and the retired Mr Mohammed) were the highlight of my trips to storage! Always helpful and accommodating. The facilities leave much to be desired but the staff is TERRIFIC. Marlon and James have been a welcome addition to the team and go above and beyond to make sure your experience is smooth and stress-free!
My friend has had a space here for over 13 years and I often come with him. I gotta say, the management has taken a turn I am am grateful for Extra Space Storage. The staff - Jose, Jeff and Jay are spectacular and always go above and beyond to provide the perfect experience. thanks Extra Space.

The location is conspicuous and easy to find. The staff is also very enthusiastic and humorous. Especially ashley, she will help you as much as possible, guide, lead the way, and even help you with your luggage. I really do n’t regret choosing this one.

I needed to rent a space ASAP. I walked in was greeted by Kia and she help make everything so easy. Kia’s knowledge on storage made by process so fast. She is super nice kind caring and helpful. Can’t leave out her amazing co-workers Jose, Jules and Conseader. They are all pleasant to work with and I feel very safe having my items stored with them.

Perfect size, inexpensive. Service was great - Leo & Jose were very helpful getting my unit, and another worker helped me officially move in. Street parking is limited, but you can pull into driveway to unload if needed.
This place was so accommodating!!! They serviced patrons that weren’t even theirs!!! We were there 2 ride bikes with another company, yet they gave us coffee, crackers & comedy 😂. The people there are EVERYTHING!!! If you are in the Brooklyn area & need a storage unit or some “fun” accommodations, hit em up!!!
Nice facility. Although parking was tough due to construction, the management was helpful in making arrangements to get our truck to the loading dock. Great freight elevator and plenty of carts to help move your stuff with minimal effort. Would recommend this facility.
Worst place had several items taken from my locker. I don’t know how they got in. Very hard to reach extra space storage and the insurance company the work with is a joke. Find another place to put you stuff.
Leo helped me do a remote lease for a different store upstate. He made it super easy and really streamlined the process. Easiest storage set up I’ve ever had. If you’re using the facility in DUMBO ask for Leo.
Ashley, under Jose supervision, professionally guided me to a product that suits my needs and possibilities. It is in the last floor (10th) and while the elevators are fully functional I take it as an opportunity for cardio training. Bathrooms are complicated by COVID, though. My bet is that this will keep working for me.
The customer service is flawless! Everytime I go in Jules, Jose & James always greet me with up the most courtesy and willingness to meet my needs!!Keep up the good work!!

I visited this extra space location because it was close to my home and I was looking for somewhere to store some extra items that I had laying around the house. I met Marlon Joseph one of the store managers there and he was so helpful. Although I was uncertain if I would actually need the space he was very patient with me. I asked a ton of questions that most people would be annoyed at. Ultimately I decided not to rent and ended up tossing the extra items. But in this day and age you have to appreciate good customer service when you receive it. If you need storage ask for Marlon.
Moving is a hard process, But Kiaa and Jose made getting a storage unit a breeze! they are funny, considerate and very helpful. Location is a bit old but is clean and the staff is great !
Kiaa and Jules were kind, helpful, professional, and beyond courteous. They are the best. Considering how shady and expensive storage in New York can be, anyone not using Extra Space on John St is making a big mistake. They cant be beat.

KIAA from Extra Space Storage (John St. Brooklyn, 11201) was INCREDIBLY helpful and friendly when she went out of her way to help me out and enthusiastically answer all my questions on Monday! Her smile and her easygoing professionalism were a big part of my decision to sign up with ESS. She even gave me tour of the spaces and hooked me up with just the one that met my needs. Juan did a KILLER job walking me through my contract when I signed up the next day, too. Hes got a great sense of humor and made the contract easy to understand. Unfortunately Kia was on break yesterday so I didnt get a chance to thank her for getting me started, so please do so for me and tell her that Im looking forward to seeing the gang soon! Omit the 1 star review, this is a ZERO star review. Went in with my family and young adult children to move out our storage unit on the top most floor of the building . In the middle of the move we come to find a man sitting in an upper unit near ours, identified by just his feet hanging out. In addition we notice a very foul smell coming from his area and either he was verbalizing to himself or someone else. We packed up all our stuff as fast as possible to get out of his presence and the unsafe environment. We didn’t want to bother him or have him bother us. The only item that would not fit in the elevator was a dining table and barstool. We intentionally left these items exactly in front on the elevator doors so when we would come back up we could just grab it and go. When we came back up to retrieve the table, it was gone from the spot we left it in. Nervous and unknowing of the location of our table or the stray man that was found on the floor, we went downstairs to the office to report the situation. A woman in the office let us know that they were conscious of a mentally ill man renting and living in the unit on the floor. As we left, I received a phone call saying our account had been fined for “trash” being left from our unit. Going back to the office to clear things up, we were confronted by a male office worker saying we intentionally left the “trash”, and we made up a lie to cover the story. He demanded we go back up there to retrieve them or be assessed $250. He knew the mentally ill person was still up there. Not wanting to put my family in harms way we refused, but he continued threatened to fine our account. He sent his two female office worker with us upstairs. We found our table. It was located far back of the building. My son also was able to snap a picture of the man as he tried to allures us. My issue is not with the man living at the storage but larceny occurs it is deemed unsafe. Mostly, I am disappointed at the attitude and lack of professionalism the young man.in the office demonstrated. He supported this act of larceny rather than safety of his customer. I will be contacting corporate on Monday to discuss this incident. My expectations is for them to implement a safety plan for their customer. I also want an action plan on the young man. They all need customer service training. Is residential or storage? Should anyone encountered this kind of mess we they are paying for secure storage? This event was unsafe and criminal on so many levels? By the way, I told the young man in the office that I will be reporting he to his management team. He admitted he didn’t care. Now, I know there are cameras throughout the property. I expect corporate to review the actions of all the events and conversations that took place. I please do not send a generic apology. I prefer action plan and best practices implemented. We could of lose our lives in your establishment. The environment is unsafe and the staff lack concerns for safety for their customers. This event literally made me sick! My first reaction was to report this to the police but decided to Report the event to the office. The staff further stated that since they didn’t witness the event I have ownership of the table. Watch your camera rolls!
Affordable storage facilities in a nice neighborhood. Excellent staff.
This was my first time using a storage service and i had no idea how things went about. Luckily i had Jose to help me out with the entire process of storing my stuff to finding the right lock to going through the paper work. If you want awesome customer service Jose is the guy ! Ask for him. And btw dont trust google maps on getting to this place, it could take you into few dead ends and one ways, do ask someone on the street for directions.
José has been more than nice and incredibly competent. He took the time to show me several storage spaces and reserved the one I liked. Thank you for great service!

This place is really cheap compared to other storages in New York! The staff here was very very kind, helpful, and friendly. The storage itself was in good condition and seems safe. The location is kind of in the nowhere, but honestly the cost makes up for that. I highly recommend this place!!

This place is all marketing and no service. Parking lot has been out of commission for months. The people that are renting this building from the owner are trying to see if it is a profitable move to stay here. Perhaps when they realize that it is, they will fix the elevator. They do alot to save money: they do not have even ONE garbage receptacle, they put timers on their lights and keep staff to a minimum. Some business model ......
I had 3 different storage of different sizes, on different floors during 3 years, and I do not a complain at all. The staff was always very helpful and nice.I will totally get a storage space here again if I need to.

I am currently looking for space to store some things, that belonged to several family members. ie furniture, camping equipment, clothing and such..I got to speak to a young man named Miles who showed me several sized rooms all that would fit my need. He answered all my question regarding pricing and was very professional the whole time.
Got a good deal from the front desk. First floor storage 4 by 4 for $38 a month plus insurance $7.50.Nice size, staff are friendly, business hours are decent.

2022-06-03This is a great storage center and there is excellent service! Upon arriving I was greeted with a warm welcome and shown my unit. Unfortunately the unit was not the right size for the items that I had but Marvin was awesome at quickly finding me another unit, and I even saved some money. He helped with unloading the truck which he absolutely didn’t have to do and assisted with all my needs. 100/10 recommend this place, great customer service!

She went above and beyond to make sure I could continuously access my storage unit, even amidst broken elevators and many customers. She was attentive, knowledgeable and kind! Otherwise, facilities were well maintained, and rates were reasonable (including prorating when you need that extra day or two!)

2022-02-10Ashley was very helpful recently and took care of all our needs. She answered all my questions. She was respectful, informative, understanding, and kind. The location is also very well maintained and clean.When we were first looking for a storage unit we were sucked in by the low prices and we’re told our rate would remain the same for some time. However, within 3 months our rate was being changed to a $45-50 increase. Apparently its something that corporate/headquarters does to compete with other market prices. They do this every 3-9months. The location is not made aware as it is sent directly to the customer.While this can be frustrating, Ashley’s work ethic and need to find something that works for us is the reason to my review. The people in this location are very kind and helpful and are willing to go the extra mile to help.

2022-06-01Usually NEVER (and I mean never) write reviews, going out of my way to give these guys 5 stars. I ordered a locker, I described it to two very friendly guys in the office, and they recommended another size for $20 cheaper which fit my items perfectly. Then they offered to help me move them into the storage unit. Just nice guys making whats normally a menial task enjoyable. Honestly two of the nicest guys. Go here you wont regret it.

2022-07-03This experience was smooth and the people who work there are nice and helpful. The move-in process was not stressful. The facility is on a block essentially by itself with a parking lot and freight elevator + dollies which make move-in and out so easy. The people even caught that I accidentally rented a locker instead of a unit and caught that for me and fixed it all up, helping me decide a space size. Really good experience:)

2022-06-03Linda is amazing!!!! I can’t express enough how she has been so incredible during my time looking for a unit — whilst managing check ins and outs of customers alone at the end of the day. I’ve been so unsure during my google searches about where to get a unit, cost, size, etc. and she made the process so seamless and pleasant. I booked it on the spot as a result.Also the location is amazing for me. Very safe and actually easy from Manhattan. Highly recommend!Also I must mention Mika who was customer service in the phone and Marvin at this location who I spoke with earlier in the day with many questions. Thanks team!

2022-05-23ONE of the BEST EXPERIENCES I have ever had with a self storage facility. MARVIN& ASHELY, were PROFESSIONAL, HELPFUL, VERY PATIENT and just treated me the way they want to be treated. My sister reserved the unit but it was MARVIN who set everything up, explained the terms, discounts, accessibility of unit, insurance and MARVIN made a new contract so different people (sister, nieces roommate, me and my niece) would have access to the unit. It was my 1st time dealing with Extra Space Storage and MARVIN listened to my concerns about payments, moving out the unit early, getting rent prorated and to not waste money and helping me with additional supplies.In addition, Marvin and Ashley found a box that would hold my drawing table to go on on the airplane and were so kind in trying to find additional packaging supplies to make sure my drawing table wouldnt get damages.If you want FAIR, PROFESSIONAL and RESPECTFUL treatment go to this Extra space storage and see MARVIN, ASHLEY or DIAMOND. All of their staff are helpful and explain so you know what to expect when renting a unit.

2022-04-13I have had a storage unit at Extra Storage for a long time. I have always found the staff polite and helpful. However, I recently had some questions and concerns. I called and had the good fortune to speak to Diamond. Wow! She discovered that there were problems with my account and corrected them. She advised and helped with my payment schedule. I spoke to her several times and am now confident that all is in order. This means a lot to me. I cannot thank Diamond enough for her competence, kindness and patience. I will recommend Extra Storage with enthusiasm. Thank you Extra Storage, thank you Diamond!!!
