Food Universe Marketplace in other cities:
One of the worst grocery stores Ive ever been too. Produce is frequently moldy. I even got ICE CREAM from them that had gone bad (?!)... The only thing going for them is (1) Not crowded, and (2) Excellent beer selection in the back. (Although even the beer room is gross, as the refrigeration unit is overworked and floods the room CONSTANTLY...seriously, there is always standing water in the beer room.)
Used to be associated supermarket here, theyve modified the interior, but its still just an awful, typical ghetto store, where the prices are not marked, they cheat you on the prices, so be careful, the produce is not always fresh, it doesnt smell anymore, like most do in this area, but its way overpriced for what it is. I only shop there when costco supply runs out. Only get milk, some tomatoes and maybe juice. Always check the price when you can!
I came down with a really horrible stomach flu last night and have been completely bedridden with alternating fever/chills. Really awesome stuff. At about hour 24 of feeling absolutely terrible, I realized I needed to get some hydration but water wasnt doing it, so I decided to see if I could get some gatorade from somewhere. Now, if I was feeling capable of leaving my apartment without fear of losing control of my faculties, I would have just gone out and gotten some, problem solved. However, as that wasnt the case, I decided to call around to see if anyone was able to deliver. The man I talked to on the phone at Associated was very nice, and took my order. I ended up ordering more than I wanted to be sure I met their minimum, which was a very kind $10. I was planning on tipping more than I normally would for the silliness of what I ordered, 2 big gatorades and 2 big gingerales. I was told that was enough for delivery, so I gave them my address (about 3 blocks away) and phone number and was told that it would be there in about 10 minutes.10 minutes comes and goes, then 20, then 30. I call back at about 40 minutes and ask, as kindly as possible, if I may have missed the delivery person somehow (though I dont know how as I hadnt moved since Id called). The man said that the delivery person had left about 10 minutes ago, and that he would call him to check on where he was. I never received a call back.An hour and 10 minutes after my original call, and still nothing. I called back and a woman picked up and I told her about the issue. She told me that the delivery person had gone out, COULDNT FIND MY ADDRESS, and had come back. And since there was only her, the manager and the delivery person at the store, he wouldnt be going out again. As I continued to feel my stomach turn, now from a combination of being sick and lack of anything in it, I informed her that that was impossible since the building was only 3 blocks away, extremely clearly marked (its kind of notable building in the area) and literally the only building on that stretch of my street between the two cross streets Id given. She said she knew, but that he couldnt go out again. I clarified that he in fact did go out and came back because he claimed he couldnt find the address, she said yes, so I asked her why he hadnt called since he had my phone number. She said she would go check, and that was when I was hung up on.I would have loved to air these grievances over the phone with the manager because Im not usually a fan or negative reviews based on one experience, but I wasnt left with much of a choice since it became abundantly clear that they didnt want to speak with me over the phone.Im fully aware that I do not live far from this grocery store, and that in a normal situation, I could have just gone out myself. But anyone that has had the stomach flu knows that you really dont want to be out anywhere when in the throws of it, and sometimes the only thing that helps is a little bit of gatorade and gingerale and kindness. Im so fuming mad that I was given the run around on this simply because I really needed the stuff, and if they had just told me that the order was too small to deliver or they didnt have enough people, I would have understood and moved on to my next option then instead of an hour and a half of grossness later. I cant believe that they consider it good business to not only not deliver on a promise that is actually very simple to fulfill, but then not even apologize or acknowledge that they did something wrong, but instead end the interaction by hanging up on me. I used to shop here occasionally, but I never will again, simply because I dont want to support a place that is dishonest. Its literally called a convenience store. Be convenient and if you cant, at least be honest.I gave it two stars because its a decent grocery store when you go in person, aside from the fact that the customer service in person is usually pretty slow as well.

2022-05-10Have often seen molded food. Many items on selves are past expiration dates. If something has a sale sticker on it check the expiration date!!!! I’ve seen sale items with scratched off expiration dates as well. Throughly check bread for mold and expiration dates. They don’t rotate it for fresh bread often. Most items in freezer are freezer burnt.I’ve had to wait multiple times for someone to come to the register. While the cashiers are never rude. They are rather aloof and move slowly when busy.

2022-05-29Well stocked with the basics, but sadly I agree about the produce. Bought potatoes and when I cut into them at home they were green…which a quick google told me means they’re semi-poisonous. Bummer.

2021-09-03KEEP AN EYE ON EXPIRATION DATES! And, dont think youre getting a good deal price-wise either. This place is run more like a larger scale, second rate (and over-priced) bodega. Places like this is why more people order groceries shipped rather deal with backed-up lines, barely alert (often rude) check-out clerks and diminishing quality overall.

2019-09-01Extremely rude cashier Ashley spoke to us like we were dirt. Even when we complained to the manager about it in front of her she remained arrogant and dismissive. She must be related to the owners or else she’d be fired. Not a bad selection of groceries, albeit overpriced. The meat we bought was not fresh and we threw it away when we opened it up at home. The manager tried his best to be friendly, but he clearly has no control over his employees.

2017-09-20Ive never bought meat here and I rarely buy produce. so I cant speak to what others are saying about the mold. but the beer selection is indeed great, and yes the fridge is usually flooding but I dont really care about that. everything else is a little better than a corner store, although prices are meh. however the staff is very nice and will often negotiate or find stuff for you. since this place is down theblock from me I go there often, but if I had another choice I would probably take it.

2015-11-24Decent quality. Definitely better than a bodega, just a little bit less than a premium supermarket. Produce is usually a cut above what is available at Associated, but not by much. Their meat selection is small, but well-kept. There is a *huge* well-stocked walk-in beer corner in the back of the store with an impressive variety of beer from all over the world. Prices are about average, sometimes discount, about the same as the C-Town at 4918 Broadway, and definitely not as expensive as Park Terrace Deli.

2018-04-29Mixed experiences with some not great produce or fresh meat. They have an extensive beer selection which my friends like. There was a spate of issues where they were not accepting cards for a while. It seems to be resolved now.Go for the drink selection but buy your fresh food carefully.

2017-03-13Theyre making steady improvements, but much work remains to be done. Great beer selection, though you often have to contend with leaking or flooding to get to the beer. Produce quality is mixed - often great herbs, but fruit is sometimes moldy. The lighting got replaced at some point but could still be improved (maybe a warmer color); it would go a long way toward making grocery shopping a more pleasant experience.

2017-03-20Some good stuff, some horrible stuff, like the packaged grape tomatoes that were going fuzzy when I brought them home. Should have checked them before buying - I didnt bring them back - but geez - they were pretty far gone. Someone should check that stuff. Maybe their beer selection is great, but most everything else can be bought at either Fine Fare or C-Town or theres another small market close by that doesnt have produce but its cleaner and probably more trustworthy.
