For Birds Only in other cities:
I just bought a parakeet yesterday from them and am so pleased. The lady at the counter let me and my husband just walk in and choose the one we want. I was playing with the parrots and feeding all of them and at the end I bought a beautiful parakeet. She is so lovable and already is eating off of my hands. I’m so happy because most parakeets don’t like human interaction the next day , this one has already gotten use to me. He’s so healthy and cute and I can tell very clean. I like the place and will be coming here more often.
I did not feel welcome here. It was more about the business as the first question asked was if I needed a cage. Rude young lady. Please don’t make it seem as if you care for the birds when you have 6 cockatiels and larger birds living in a small cage. Horrible.Btw, I overheard about them shutting down for good. Best of luck.
I love birds, I loved them with all my heart. Theres isnt many places on the island that sells a wide variety of exotic birds. I was really excited to discover this place with my boyfriend. Im saddened to say that, although they have such a wide variety, I can see the staff doesnt care about these birds. The birds in the back clearly dont receive much human interaction. And not only that the way that the woman and the male staff handled our bird and the birds there was very forcefully. The male staff member slammed his hand on the parakeet cage to get them to fly around. I dont think frightening them is the right way. I just feel that they need someone in the back constantly, to help customers and to take care and interact with the birds. Not scare the birds to get them to corporate. Also, they just didnt seem very knowledgeable on the species that they had. And there were quite a few birds in quarantine cages with no water or food. Which was alarming. All in all, I just dont think theyre doing everything they can for these birds. Bottom line, handle your birds. Give them the best life while they are in your shop. Happier birds, well loved birds are nicer and tamer birds. Thus, more people and families will buy them because most of the work will be done.I never write reviews, but thanks for coming to my ted talk.
After watching this place on youtube we decided to take the 70+ mile trek from upstate NY to check it out. Well... after about 20 mins... we were in love and ready to purchase a parrot even though we only went to look. After chatting it up with Ida and her staff about the birds and understanding their temperament and quirks we decided on one and blew a bag. Now Im home realizing I just bought a 30 year responsiblity. Literally a mortgage that can talk. Hopefully this is a bit more enjoyable than a mortgage.Great store with a wide variety of products for birds and other animals including cats, dogs and even fish. And a welcoming and family vibe that you just will never get at the big box stores.
This is the place to come for all your bird and pet needs. Specializing in birds, there is no one out there that can handle a bird like Ida. Shell clip wings, nails and beaks with no problem. Buy your birds from her and you and your pet will be happy for years to come. She will also board and take care of your bird if you go on vacation. Great Place!!!
I got an Indian ringneck almost 2 months ago from this place.. its really a great place to buy parrots from here cause they have many kinds of them.. but i saw one parrot was getting picked on by all the other parrots in the tank they had.. poor guy was bleeding from the back.. I couldnt stand it.. so I right away had to buy him.. hes still scared of many stuff but hes an amazing bird.. I love him to death! N will definitely go buy another one in the future, from this place! The owner was very helpful.. gave me tips on how to raise him and whatnot.. enjoyed the jungle room as well.. definitely a place to visit!!!
I would not recommend this place. Besides being overpriced, the staff is rude and make you feel unwelcome. I got both my parakeets from them and I took them back to get their nails clipped. The older lady proceeded to slam my budgie against its cage in order to grab it, after I explained to her multiple times that he was hand tamed and would go to her hand by himself if she tried. He passed away after only four months. Im giving it a star only because my other parakeet is still alive. I dont know if their bigger parrots are better and healthier, but Id recommend going somewhere else.
So its is my first time going to For Birds Only in Mineola, being that Im a bird lover and purchased 2 birds from else where I only came here for the essential toys or what not. They were not welcoming. The birds not only didnt look happy but many of them DID NOT have any water especially 2 babys over by the fish area. I just feel there is way to many birds for such a small place! I am very frustrated with what I had to walk into. I would not recommend going there to buy a bird but for your basics then its fine.
The owner is only helpful and nice when you are making a purchase but when the issue came up with the purchase we made she caught such a bad attitude. We came to the store and asked for her advise on what birds to get that will be kids friendly as we were buying for our kids . She advised us on buying love birds .we wanted to buy one just to see how it bonds with kids but she advised on buying 2 love birds saying that they are better when they have a pair and that they were already together in one cage and it is better not to separate them .so we spent about $500 including the cage and food for birds .she was very nice and sweet .6 months later the birds laid eggs (both were females but still laid eggs ) and they became so aggressive .they would not let kids even touch them and even bit my 3 year olds finger and it was bleeding . We came to the store and explained the situation to her and told her that we will buy another bird and asked just give us some sort of credit toward the new bird .not only she did not do it ,she refused giving service to birds saying that I charge for it .i said of course I am not expecting it free .then she still refused .but worst of all is that she accused us of doing wrong by buying 2 birds while supposedly she told us to buy only one . Such a liar .She made her money and did not want anything to do with that . I understand everyone wants to make money but she was way too money hungry and dishonest . Certainly will never go back and she lost another 500 as were we planning to buy another bird .
Fine as long as nothing goes wrong with your purchase. If something goes go wrong, you’re on your own. For example, we bought a large bag of Lafeber’s Nutriberries from this shop. We opened it, used maybe 10% of the bag and found that beneath the few that were on top of the bag the remainder was one, big, stuck together mass that could not be separated. We brought it back to the store and the short woman behind the counter told us we needed to separate the mass with our hands. I handed her the bag and asked her to show us how and as expected, she couldn’t do it. However, she told us she would not refund our money or replace the bag. We called Lafeber’s and told them what had happened. They replaced the bag and wanted to know what store had refused to refund us. We told them. The Lafeber’s person said she couldn’t understand why the shop hadn’t simply asked their distributor for a replacement bag because that was standard procedure. We had a problem with a sickly bird too. Listen, bird food, toys, etc. are readily available on line and if you want a bird, go see Mark.
The place seems to have everything that you could want for a bird but they also suggest reptiles and I must say it is not very clean place are you mean they do seem to have a devoted group of people that visit there as I did see a lot of people talking to staff . You are not allowed in the bird room by yourself. Again I cant stress this enough it wasnt a very clean place and their stock seems to sit around for some items as they were covered in dust.
Very beautiful birds but kept in poor conditions, flies are walking around on them and on you while you are interacting with birds. The old lady, the owner is extremely rude and impolite. She has not idea about her birds. Instead of helping you her behavior makes you leave the store slamming the doors.Go to Rockville Centre if you want to buy a bird they are much nicer and work with you.
Most heartless place I have ever been to, not one working said anything to me. They keep birds in 5 gallon fish tanks no room to move around, one was crying for help and all they did was covered it up blocking air holes. Poor thing didn’t even have water or toys. Never seen such neglect to such cute animals before. It sickens me I couldn’t bare being in there any longer than 5 minutes.
Walked in there and walked right out. So shocked at the poor conditions Im writing this from my car right outside the store. The place smells damp, the owner looked at me like I was trash when I walked in and I had to be the one to initiate conversation instead of him asking can I help you upon our making eye contact the second time.Ive been raising birds since I was 12 and now at 32 I can confidently say that there is at least a good 40% chance your bird will get sick and/or die in the first few weeks to months of ownership. The water bowls are filthy, the cages are filthy. Some of the birds are feather plucking... which is not surprising since there are barely any toys in the cages. Heartbreakingly there was an African Grey showing signs of dehydration and on closer inspection there was no water bowl for him, only food. The birds are either in overcrowded tanks, enclosures or cages far too small for them...all filthy like they havent been wiped down for years. This was so disgusting and heartbreaking because I love birds it was hard to see them in such poor conditions. Not to mention the non existent customer service. DONT support these animal abusers. If you need a parrot, trust me, go to Rockville Center.
This is my all-time favorite pet shop in Mineola and it really has little to do with the selection of pet food and products. Whenever I happen to be in a bad mood, I can always go in the back of the store where there is a large and bustling room filled with exotic birds and parrots all trying to get friendly with me. This store is so much fun and there are so many different types of feathered friends!
My first review ever cause i usually dont care enough to bother but whoever i talked to on phone was rude enough to warrant a negative review. Anyway i asked for opinion on a diaper harness for a duck and was told what would I know buy it and if it doesnt fit throw it out why would you do that to a duck, just leave it in a cage and dont let it walk around the house real good customer service
I bought an African Grey Parrot from this place a week later that I bought I took it to the vet for a regular check up and found out that my African Grey had PBFD which is a disease that affects a birds feathers and beak so I presumed to go to this shop and show the lady the results and she said that this was a lie and that the veterinarian was lying to us. If you want to buy a parrot don’t go to this shop. Go to Rockville center instead
I bought my Tootsie, a cockatoo, from these people years ago! These people not only sell you a lifelong friend, they coach you through the process of raising the bird. Cockatoos are difficult pets, and if not for their assistance, I dont know if I would have been able to handle Tootsie for so long! I plan to have her my entire life and then my daughters entire life!! I purchase my pet supplies here too! Thanks guys!
Very friendly staff. Very helpful with all of our questions. The Medium to Larger birds are out for hands on experience. They are hand raised and fed. They are very friendly and playful. We witnessed many customers coming in for their birds routine maintenace requirements... One even tried coming back into the handling area to see his old roomies. Either that or he didnt like his new owner.. Haha!
Very Large Bird Selection. BUT I truly think theyre more about making a buck then really care for the animals they sell. I saw a baby Blue/Gold Macaw in a small tank...he was quarantined or something. .but he looked squished in that tank! They also had some Chinchillas in 1cage (like 4 of them) and cage was sitting in the back of the store on a bottom shelf among other merchandise...basically the Chinchillas saw peoples legs and feet walking by all day and they were just there like product 4 in one cage on a shelf! I had to ask where they were to really notice they were there! I felt like buying one just to take it away from that environment... Made me Sad. And they had some baby parrotlets... Like 5-6 of them all in one little tank...the animals here to me did not appear happy and I felt so bad for them. They looked fed, etc...so Im not going to say neglect or abuse.. But they can do better by the animals as far as SPACE. The birds were average price to some being more pricey than average asking price around... They do have a large variety of food, treats, toys, cages. They also board...average price $10/dy. But when i asked if they need proof that the bird does not have any disease..they said No. And that they put the boarded birds in the basement away from the birds in the shop.. The man I spoke with also said that one bird was boarded with them and got sick/died but denied that it was anything to do with them...that bird was prob sick when it came in...First of all..Why would you tell a customer (me) that and also Why would you not ask for vet doc that bird is not ill and can be around other birds? And Why would you put boarded birds in the basement??!? Horrible. Regardless whether they think the birds are safe from each other because theyre in the basement...that is False...certain diseases spread by air... Food containers used... Cages used..Cleaning cloths used... But they dont seem to be too concerned about it...that they would take in a bird and not ask for health proof?? And the bird that he spoke of who got sick... He really cant say it had nothing to do with them if they dont ask for these things. I would Definitely NOT Board my bird here!! In the basement (sad) and maybe theres sick birds in the shop???!! NOooooo. Beware Bird Owners of having your bird boarded/groomed here... Youre taking a chance. The place isnt full of bad people running it...they seem nice enough but I didnt get the impression that they know fully what theyre doing with some things...and They dont have enough space and think its OK for the animals to be in close quarters...Which is why I do think theyre more about $$$ than the animals they care for....but their attitude is out of ignorance not malice...so if that makes any sense... Anyhow... Not a shop I would recommend.* I just read some other reviews and there is one from Adam Shapiro...his story sounds ALOT like the one told to me by the man who works in this shop!!!! And he claims his bird was not sick when he left it with them...Omg thats Scarey. *
Rip off with sick birds. my african grey died from that place never made 6months I shouldve purchased from rvc. Called her for assistance not a refund I was thinking like 20% of or $300 a month they said no..lol..shes about the money I would give zero stars if I could
They killed my bird!!!!! do not leave your bird here!!!! mine died two days after i left it with them. in december, 2014 i left my parrot there to go vacation. they called me two days later and said my bird was very sick. i asked why didnt you call me sooner? got no response. i said please please take him to a vet. she gave me some bs she couldnt. i called back a half hour later and said my sister is coming to get him to do it herself. then she says do not bother, he is dead. i have a feeling he had already been dead for quite some time since she wouldnt take him to the vet or call me sooner. then she has the nerve to tell me he was sick when i brought him in. more bs. why would i bring my sick bird that i loved and cared for many years to her and not a vet? i would never have left him if he was sick. he was happy and whistling the entire ride there. and why would she accept a sick bird that could make her other birds sick. i did some investigation and the first vet i called out of the blue told me to stay away from that place. i said too late. i am literally disgusted and sadden beyond belief and intend to get to the bottom of this. my bird went from fine to dead in two days while at this place.
A store i used to go with my father all the time to, I used to buy some fish here but then I stopped after a while seeing the same fish over and over in the stocking tanks, did I ever tell you they had A REMORA being sold there, I remember seeing that remora in a small tank struggling to swim around. It must be dead by now due to the lack of space for its large body to turn. A Filipino worker here named Fred used to help me all the time as he took care of the fish, and helped me out, recently after I heard Fred quit and left leaving someone else in charge with the fish department, and things went down hard as this person has no knowledge on keeping fish. From reading other peoples comments on avoiding this place, I plan to do the same as I take my business else where. It was great when Fred used to work here, I think some of you probably heard of him or not but he was the guy who would hook you up.

2019-07-28Fun, interactive bird shop. Bird room is funnest part about this place, hands down. You can literally hold a bird or let one perch on youe arm. Owner is funny and knows a lot. Think a lot of people here think theyre rude, but theyre instead more straightforward and to the point.

2018-04-26I bought my little budgie there 6 years ago. The place has lots of supplies and LOTS of birds. Its a family run operation of people who clearly appreciate animals. I went in there to see if they had some advice or medicine for my bird who hasnt been himself lately. They were very helpful, very caring, and helped me out quite a bit. These reviewers saying that the owner is mean - cmon grow up!.... if you cant handle someone being a little direct with you. This lady didnt need to do anything for me, but they went above and beyond. I found mom, dad, and daughter to all be kind, concerned, and above all knowledgeable. As for the couple of negative reviews on here. Trust me, take them with a grain of salt. I find it odd that a few people have suggested to go to RVC ... do yourself a favor, go look up the owner of that store on youtube. Check out his carelessness with animals on his tv show, or go read my review of the place that I made the mistake of going to and would never go back to.As for For Birds Only, I recommend it.

2020-10-10We bought our parrot here for a nail trimming, and the young lady was very kind and gentle in handling her. The older man was also kind. I always appreciate it when their care for your bird is genuine! They are also pretty organized and clean, although parts of the bird room in the back look dusty with some cobwebs on the cages. Occasionally the owners can be a little moody, but were only human, so I get it.

2020-02-07I have had great experiences buying supplies and boarding my blue and gold at this store. I have loved my bird for over 30 years and feel confident entrusting her to their care. Before moving out here I used other facilities over the years, and I can say with experience, that the family who operates this store is the best. I have had the pleasure of dealing with mom, dad, and their daughter as well as their wonderful staff many times. My macaw can be difficult with strangers, but they have the experience and compassion to handle her. I always come home to a happy and healthy bird. Highly recommend!

2021-03-01This is one of my favorite stores. Family owned by such nice people. Unfortunately I found out yesterday (when bringing my bird in to get trimmed) that they are closing at the end of March after 37 years. Very sad to hear and they are such nice people.

2019-04-04I love this place. They take good care of the birds...I see them cleaning the cages. Feeding the babies is a big production. Ive seen the birds many times, as I like to hang with the birds before I leave. They have food and toys and water....but when they have to clean them, they just put the birds in empty ones--its short duration. Theres lots of birds. Always nice to me. But Im nice to them, and I dont make assumptions. If there was something that seemed weird, Id ask and not run away. They are good people. They even let me walk around with the birds while I shop--some of the birds are very friendly! I buy my dogs food there because I like to visit...I could go other places, but those birds call me and their prices are excellent.

Great selection of fish and supplies too. Great food and other products. I love the open bird rm too where you can go in and enjoy the birds while choosing your new companion.

2019-09-10I love Ida, the owner! She and her husband keep their store clean and well stocked. I have never seen a dirty cage. I bring my bird, Sami, to her for boarding when Im not home. She also trims his nails and beak and the birds are not afraid of her. Ida loves her birds and loves her store! I highly recommend For Birds Only!
