Great, Small park in Brooklyn. Though onen wonders how many people realize its partially a tomb. Which makes for fascinating observation of people with their drum circles and yoga and exercises and everything else. Sure, most of the park is walking paths (of varied terrain), sports fields (soccer, tennis), and playground, etc. But the monument and steps - is commemorative and in memoriam of the dead dating back to the American Revolution. Fascinating juxtaposition of death and burial, life and activity.
Lovely park for kids, dogs, lovers, fitness enthusiasts, and more. The weather wasnt too bright during my visit, so it felt like the crowd was just right. I can imagine the crowd doubling or quadrupling on a nicer day.The kids who are toddlers to much older will love the playgrounds, steps, and space for exploration.I dont believe that everyone will enjoy this park when it gets really hot and crowded. I felt like there were not many trees around to provide plenty of shade, and I only noticed one small public restroom (has baby changing stations). All in all, I enjoyed the space.
Something for everybody, must say it seems ppl clean up more after their dogs here than prospect park, which is great for all the mommas/ caregivers with crawling/ adventurous kids. Tennis courts, two playgrounds, restrooms and plenty of lawn space to hangout. They also have a dedicated picnic area with benches.
This is one of my favorite places! Its fun to take walks since the terrain is Hilly but it has trails you can hike or run on. This park has two great playgrounds in different sections one is catered to younger kids while the other has a childrens play area for the younger ones but caters to older kids who prefer to climb higher and includes more challenging play spaces which consists of Gorgeous Bird carvings and a Water Play Area as well. It is also filled with beautiful and Shady trees which provide perfect areas for picnics or relaxation. It has the Prison Ship Martyrs Memorial Monument there that has a great area around it where people practice martial arts and skateboard stunts. If youre a gamer also fun spot for Pokemon Go with scattered poke stops throughout the park. I enjoy this park because its in the middle of busy downtown Brooklyn but it feels like an escape to Nature even if its only for a little while to breathe fresh air and unwind. I like it because people of all ages can come here and theres something theyll want to do and also on Saturday Mornings the Farmers Market is just on the side street by Dekalb and S. Oxford Ave :)
Tons of interesting trees surround Fort Greene Park and offer a very different environment based on which you choose to sit under. The south side of the park along DeKalb has good shade around the meadow but open grass (and some exposed dirt patches) great for lawn games, frisbee and playing with the dogs spending their day in the park.
Relatively safe park. Just dont stay in after 10PM. Neighborhood families congragate and enjoy the beautiful trees and well put together architectural design. Few tables for picnic but many were sitting on the floor, with their own blankets, close flowers and cherry blossoms. We absolute love Spring in NY and we were celebrating as we are beating Covid-19. Get vaccinated, people! Science over religion, fear, and authoritarianism.
I love this park! Its hard to park around here as it is in the middle of a neighborhood, but there is so much space once you are inside. They have a couple of playgrounds for the kids. Beautiful sculptures at different entrances, and a war memorial make this park different from the rest.
This 30.2 acre park, designed by Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux, is one of the precious gems in Fort Greene precious. Its a hill with paved lanes for walkers, dirt lanes for runners, small sections of forests for those who miss the flavor of nature, play ground for kids, and decent lawns for sport and gatherings. The top of the hill, surrounding the prison ship martyrs monument, is often used by individuals and groups for drumming, dancing, yoga, boxing, Tai chi and other fun social activities.
Lovely topography in the typically flat streets of Brooklyn and New York. Aside from its appeal as a site of eighteenth century history, it’s just a great green space for walking dogs, throwing balls, talking to friends, and looking up at the reaching thin branches of tall trees. Strategically placed within easy paces of shops and nosh. Interesting and evolving view of downtown Brooklyn. Well maintained.
Beautiful park just a few minutes from Atlantic terminal, great place to spend a morning, particularly if you’re a dog lover! Hit the park before 9a for dog heaven! All the dogs are allowed off leash and roam free through the park. There are also great tennis courts here and some Brooklyn history you can learn about at the big obelisk in the center.
Good place to go for a jog. Even has a mud trial for jogging.Has lot of open space to do cross fit workouts.Great place for dogs. Even has 4 tennis courts.Farmers market open right beside fort greene on Sunday mornings.Has 2 big kids playground sections.Great place for kids to do some snow sledging during winter.
Feels like a much bigger park than it is because of the varied terrain and extensive landscaping. The mulch Xmas trees in the winter which makes everything smell amazing. Ive been coming here for years of picnics, dog walks, and farmers market shopping. Unique views from the top! Love this park!
Beautiful green space, I used to bring my kids here when they were younger. The playground on the Myrtle avenue entrance is truly awesome. It has a really cool space for kids to explore, make friends and have fun. The smaller swing set on the Dekalb Avenue entrance is really cool because the play space is wide open so that its easier to see and keep track of the little ones.
Best place for morning walk and hangout with friends .I love this place and i love going there everyday just go there and fell the nature by youre self and good place for picnic and have some fun with friends easily. Get your self chance to be there once in life. If you are a travellers this will be a great place to relax and be calm.Best of luck
Have lived next to this park all my life, so much changes have taken place and upgrades have been done and it definitely has more people visiting now. Wonderful big park in the middle of the community. Ive always loved coming here. Theres a playground on 2 different sides, a ball playing court, and lots of space for picnics/hanging out and just relaxing. During the winter times the kids all love to use the hills for snowboarding. So many things to do here. Theres also a little house that actually has some historical information on the park.
Love this outdoor park for small outdoor pandemic gatherings. The bathroom is at the top of the hill which I believe is accessible. However there are a ton of stairs (3 flights) if you’re coming from the northeast playground area. Take the sloping path on the East. From what I could tell, the bathrooms were still open on a Saturday at 6pm and there are two port-a-potties outside if they’re closed (and you’re brave). We hid from the rainstorm in the atrium area of the building with bathrooms. Definitely very cute park and a farmers market too.
Fort Greene Park is a city-owned and -operated park in Fort Greene, Brooklyn, New York City. The 30.2-acre park was originally named after the fort formerly located there, Fort Putnam, which itself was named for Rufus Putnam, George Washingtons Chief of Engineers in the Revolutionary War. Renamed in 1812 for Nathanael Greene, a hero of the American Revolutionary War, it was redesigned by Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux, who also designed Central Park and Prospect Park, in 1867. The park contains the Prison Ship Martyrs Monument, which includes a crypt designed by Olmsted and Vaux. Across the street from its DeKalb Avenue entrance at Ft. Greene Place is Brooklyn Technical High School. To its west is the oldest hospital in Brooklyn, now called the Brooklyn Hospital Center. North of the park are the Walt Whitman Houses, one of the largest housing projects in New York City.
This park, in my opinion, is the best park in Brooklyn. The reason because it is a large park with several entry points. There is a small historic museum, there is a toddler playground and a and older children playground, and there is plenty of area to just relax or have a picnic or a birthday party or just to relax with family and friends. From time to time especially on a weekend, there vendors selling ethically/sustainably made clothing, foods, drinks etc. It’s a festive park. And you can meet some really interesting people and families too.
Nice park. Family friendly. Tennis courts are tough to book because they are so popular. Nice place for a summers picnic. Four stars because it’s been so heavily used over the last year that the grass is wearing thin in places and no existent in some spots. Hopefully the park wardens will work on that so it comes back to what it was a few years ago.
I really enjoy spending time here with my kids. Mostly we like the green spaces, a big boulder in the middle they can climb, bike trails, lots of big, old trees. Sometimes it can get a little crowed and is not always possible to find a private area for a picnic so I would advise to come early in the day to save a spot for a big group gathering. Most people at the park are pretty laid back and usually drama free, except at the big playground. It seems like there are sometimes badly behaved kids there with little to no supervision so I tend to avoid that playground. The little playground is better, but is more geared towards younger kids. Sometimes people play music or skateboard around the monument so if you dont like that you can always sit elsewhere in park. There is also a farmers market on the weekend morning/early afternoon with lots of good produce and other specialty items.
Love this park. Lots of different aspects packed into a square block radius. Basketball courts. Children’s playgrounds, the monument, running paths, tennis courts, biking and walking paths, BBQ area with picnic tables, open fields, hilly areas, various trees. Fantastic for off leash dog play as dozens of neighbors and their dogs come to get some early morning energy out! You can always fond a friend there. Great spot for a celebration and party as well. A gem.
The park was nice they had indoor bathrooms (were semi clean) not sure how late they stayed open. Porta potties where available. The park was filled with families, friends, couples, people with their pets. It has a small play ground, basketball court, and containers to dispose your barbecue ashes 👍🏽
I really like Fort Greene Park. I went there last week for a live film screening hosted by rooftop films and it was a really nice park. It’s quite compact Siri always around people but it Doesn’t feel crowded. Definitely recommend if you’re in the area. There’s also a giant Monument right in the middle of Fort Greene Park. A cool little spot to hang out, skateboard, do yoga, or just enjoy the sunshine
Saturday Farmers market and clothing recycling drop off along the sidewalk surrounding the park. Flowers are beginning to bloom! Walking paths throughout the park are in great shape. Very active in and around the park. A variety of restaurants nearby. Cean restroom facility in the visitor center at the top of the hill inside the park. I definitely recommend a visit!
Update: hopefully the plans to remove gorgeous mature healthy trees has been rejected.. It is a wonderful green space in downtown Brooklyn. Lovely old trees providing shade for all users. It is also in danger from a ludicrous plan by the city to rip out 50 healthy trees in order to put in concrete paths and open areas. It is insane.
Great little neighborhood park. Farmers market on the weekend even in the winter. The offer composting and even clothes recycling. The market is pretty extensive as well. Youll always see someone running. There are barbecues throughout the spring and summer. Every morning until 9:00 a.m. they offer off leash dog park where a ton of owners show up and have their dogs run free and play. The one downside, is on the corner of the park on the Myrtle side a bunch of people tend to congregate on the park benches drinking and clearly drunk and just playing loud music, in general wasting the day away.
One of my favorite parks (in the world). It’s a medium sized park that is ideal for running, walking your dog, or chatting with friends. Nearby Dekalb Avenue has plenty of lovely restaurants and food shops which makes it easy to grab picnic fare on your way to the park. The monument to Sailors and Soldiers is fine. There’s a door. You can’t go in it. I tried.Sometimes there are comedy shows on the steps at the back of the park (Myrtle). They vary in quality, but certainly create a lovely atmosphere. I plan to frequent Ft Greene Park as long as I live in the neighborhood.
Amazing as always . Took my 5 yr old for the first time and she did not want to leave. The hills and the Boulder near the tennis court and nothing beats the tower in the center of the park. Best thing is the diverse groups and the interests played out all over at tables on the stairs and grass
Nice big park in Brooklyn. We were able to have out Friend baby shower here, its a park big enough for so many events that you want to host. But you must make sure you have a PERMIT! they also have chess tables, benches, basketball court and a huge wad of greenery of course
This park brings the entire neighborhood together to enjoy the green space. It’s especially lovely right now with practicing musicians, personal trainers, happy hours, picnics and plenty of cute dogs and kids.WiFi, decent bathrooms, and presence of park staff to help keep everyone safe and the grounds maintained are key.
Love this park minus the fact my dog seems to always come home with fleas during the off leash hours. Other then that very spacious area. Has been a little crowded during the pandemic so I avoid walks there.I always tell my friends who come to visit thats theres a hood side and the good side. The hood side is where the basketball court is its undeveloped and unkept but I enjoy it either way you get the best of both worlds in fort greene
It was my first time visiting Fort Greene Park for a ranger-led activity and I liked it. The park is set on a hill so you get a view around the area. I recall seeing parts of the Manhattan skyline from there. It was clean; the restroom seemed decently clean, too. There are open areas for recreational workouts. It was fun watching a group of people exercising, what seemed to be boot camp for muay thai. Its child-friendly as well. Plenty of grass and trees around, and benches to sit on. It didnt seem crowded and you get your space. If you ever need a little respite, this park is a good choice if youre in the area.
Wow- Fort Greene Park has changed. It looks great. Now filled with people running, walking, reading books, exercising and more. Theres an area for dogs to play safely. As well a playground for children. Theres enough grass to throw the ol football around also. The views of Downtowns latest skyscrapers is always encouraging. Spike Lee use to have a store across the street over two decades ago. Theres a hospital next door, as well as a High School. The Brownstones that line the blocks have been restored and up kept. NYC trains are close, and shopping is a walk away.
Great park for the people around the area. Lots of people working out these days outdoors which is great but whats not so great is large group of fitness class taking over the park for their own use. There should be a limit or reservation system for these groups monopolizing the park for their own class in a free space and no room for others. I know its Covid and all but its getting a bit ridiculous especially on the weekends.
A hilly park perfect for walks, picnics, and sports, Ft Greene is easily accessible from both Downtown Brooklyn and Bed-Stuy. The monument and grand staircase provide nice views of Manhattan, and the many coffee shops and restaurants around the perimeter make it a good date location.
For a national park its pretty torn up. The grass is in serious need of proper management and cleanliness is very lacking. Great layout and space help make up for it. Design of the monument is pretty cool. Design of the park is also cool. Decent playgrounds for kids.
Just wish most of the cultural events that used to take place in that park dont get pushed out because of our new residents and you see it every year by permit denials for some events, new country club style system on the public tennis courts to name a few. The public park is for EVERYONE.
What does it mean to review a park, particularly a park, like Fort Greene Park, that isnt really a tourist destination, like, say Prospect Park, a mile south, or Central Park, emperor of American parks, across the river in Manhattan? Who decides to go to a park based on a review? That said, Fort Greene Park is something of a little gem. With the Prison Ships Monument atop the hill, the varied trees planted along the paths, and the ever-busy Farmers Market on Saturdays, its well worth that non-tourist visit. Oh, and you have to remember what it looked like back in the day. Much improved now.
Its kinda Boring; they should Upgrade the park now, like make it look more cool and fun. Like take away those tiny-no-fun slides anf add a Seasaw, and some Tire swings and regular seat swings so Bigger kids and Not Just babies can swing too.Its 2020, it shouldve been renovated 5_10yrs ago. UPGRADE NOW! Please🙏
One of my favorite parks in the city. Super well kept, they are constantly fixing/improving landscape and terrain, its usually very clean, playgrounds if you have kids at two corners. Most valuable for me and anyone with a dog - the entire park is off-leash from 9pm-9am. My puppers loves it and the dog community is super friendly. 10/5 stars if I could.
Fort Greene Park is not only a historical landmark but also a huge green space ideal for a daily stroll alone or with your best friend (both the 2 or 4 legged kind). Theres a childrens area complete with old-school swings and slides, and water sprinklers in the summer. There are tennis courts, dirt paths, and plenty of fresh cut lawns for picnics. Before the current health crises, the parks department also had free nighttime movie showings, and there are plenty of water fountains and a huge restroom complete with a small museum depicting the parks history.
Amazing place to play, relax and explore for adults and children. Different playgrounds and walking paths among trees with their detailed information. Interesting historical site on top of the park also with a seating area with tables to enjoy lunch, coffee or a good book. Also 2 blocks walk to the Whitman Library offering great activities to chill and enjoy which I did at World Cinema Series on Tuesdays 5 pm!

2022-05-23One of the best parks in Brooklyn. 2 playgrounds in the SE & NW corners, tennis, basketball and bathrooms. Plus the monument. Reseeding on the SE lawnsLots of space for dogs to run and play. The hills are steep and some of the paths arent well paved.Over 11,500 men and women that died in the Revolutionary War are buried in the crypt underneath this monument.

2021-11-10BROOKLYN LADIES WHO WALKABOUT:I love my neighborhood...I get to walk this amazing historical park almost everyday to get my steps in. Its a very people, kid and dog friendly park. In the summer it has amazing gatherings and free concerts. They also have tennis courts...The landscapers are making it more astetically pleasing for strolling and hanging out.

2022-06-12Nice space. We went for a 6yr old birthday party. Very clean environment and plenty of space for the kids to run around. The visitor center was right there with clean bathroom and some information. Not sure what it was about wasnt very catchy to peak an interest to see what it was about. Wouldve been nice if there was someone there to provide a lil background.

2022-03-30Didnt go inside the park as we were short of time and it was drizzling too. It was fairly big and looked quite nice from the outside but I am sure it will look much more beautiful in the next few days once the flowers really start blooming. Bit of a climb though as it is on a height.

2021-10-08Its my favorite park in the city. Usually only occupied by the local community. Rarely crowded or full of problematic people. Well maintained. They also host events every now and then, including a weekly farmers market on Saturdays. Its lovely!

2021-06-13The park I love. I come here daily to walk around. Beautiful park. Sometimes I wish people who visit to use the park with more love and care but the park staffs are doing their best to keep the park clean and beautiful. Maintenance is getting better and better every year. Family friendly. Two playgrounds, one for toddlers and one for more older kids. Street parking can be very challenging. My favorite thing to do here is during the late summer near the end of the sunset, watching the orchestra of light performed by the fireflies which is just stunning to see.
