Great for a leisure walk, picnic, or lazy Sunday of exploring. Easy enough to walk all around the Fort in a short amount of time, lush and hilly, with a goat pen! and great views of the river and Verrazano Bridge. Great photo ops, and secret nooks and crannies for the adventurous.
A warning to vistors, access to the bathroom is iffy and inconsistent along the main road despite the stated operation hours and bus service is infrequent at least for me but that isnt the park services fault. Aside from that, very quiet and scenic views from as far as jersey city, Manhattan and also clear views of bay ridge and verrazano bridge. Usually quiet and not very crowded, quite a bit to explore around here. Not much else to say, worth a visit or two like for dates.
Fantastic location of great historical value to New York City. Thankfully, this long decommissioned military site has been preserved granted the public access to it. This is also a great scenic location, overlooking the Brooklyn landscape, Verazzano bridge and the downtown Manhattan city line.
We had a very bad experience at Fort Wadsworth.I would give them zero star if possible. We used to combine 22 players from two different United Methodist churches in Brooklyn and come to Fort Wadsworth after church on Sunday to play cricket for two weeks. We always noticed that park police kept an eye on us about what are we doing. On third Sunday, when we came to Fort, there is a basketball court on Hudson Road right next to where we play cricket. My friend drop his son there for him to play basketball and all of sudden lady park ranger came and stopped behind our car. She said, this is a “private property” and you cant play basketball here. My friend asked his son to come back in car and we were leaving. Lady said you cant go like that, since you pulled over on side of the road, I will go first then you go. I am not sure which employee manual of National Park Service teaches that rule. She was showing her authority to us though we followed what she said. First of all, it is not a private property but it is a property National Park Service and say it is off limits to public rather than private property. She went back to her office and we started playing cricket. Next thing is, within 5 minutes, police came and stopped our play. Police officer said, you can only play here if you have a permit. Police officer even said that they got a call from Park Ranger complaining about our game. I am not surprise, that same lady went back and called police. Police officer said, he understand that you all are playing a sport but if you guys don’t go then they will get a phone call again.National Park Service should post a sign on Hudson Rd stating that permits are required for using this ground. There was no clear sign posted for permits. In winter same hills are used for sledding in snow week after week, I hope National Park Service is asking for permits at that time.Cc: U.S. Department of the InteriorNational Park Service
Part of Gateway National Recreation Area, the area has several historic structures dealing with history from the Revolutionary War to World War II. The overlook has great views of New York Harbor and the Verrazano Narrows Bridge. There is a small visitor center run by the National Park Service at the fort offering various tours. Camping is available and areas for walks on the beach.
Amazing panoramic views and great history. Rangers offer guided tours from the visitor center or you can self tour. Part of the larger Gateway National Park which is spread across Sandy Hook Nj, Staten Island, and Brooklyn. Some sites offer camping in unique locations. Worth the trip just for the view alone.
Beautiful National Park located on Staten Island under Verrazano bridge, with Great views of New York Harbor. Guided tours Wednesday through Sunday from Ranger station. Small camp ground open in the summer. Wonderful place to hike or ride bikes. Bus 51 from Staten Island Ferry takes you right to the gate. No place to eat in the park but there are restaurants a short walk outside the gate.
Nice but would be so much better if I could rummage through the old fort and battery. Some nice buildings in need of renovation. HGTV should come down and hook it up. There were some hijinks but there are a lot of cops so you have to pick and choose carefully what chaos you want to engage in.
National park on the N shore of Staten Island is a beautiful, scenic, historical place to visit. Gorgeous views of the VZN bridge, paths to the boardwalk on Father Cap. Bike, walk, run, stroll the paths and enjoy the views. In the Borough of parks this one stands out and does not disappoint.
Nice area to walk around. They have posted historical information about the old cannon batteries overlooking the bay and access to the beach. The national park service provides guided tours at select days and times and are not daily so if you plan to have that experience plan ahead.
Excellent views of Lower Manhattan and Brooklyn. Vearrazzano Bridge for photos. Deer roaming the area right here in NYC. Lower NY harbor. Ships. Ferries. Container ships. Fishing boats. Hey! NY harbor is bustling with activity! No bettter place to view from Ft. Wadsworth. (Has a much higher view than my beloved Brooklyn viewpoints.)
Beautiful and tranquil. An exquisite view of the Verrazano Bridge and of New York Bay. Never crowded even on the most beautiful of days and a staff whos always happy to give answers to questions. Goats are kept on the side of the hill, seasonally. That was a complete surprise, lol. Apparently, theres a over abundance of poison ivy growing there and the goats keep the vegetation in check, it seems theyre immune to it and eat it, heartedly. Who knew??? lol. The fort is like is like a time capsule. You can envision sentries standing at their posts looking for invading ships. Although, by the time of its completion it was already deemed obsolete. Try it, its a must-visit on Staten Island.
The Fort Wadsworth unit has beautiful views of the Narrows, Upper and Lower New York Bays, lovely grounds and interesting historic forts! But the visitor center is lacking! It looks like it was created on a shoestring budget, lacks color, interactive exhibits, and there are no authentic artifacts from its history on display, especially for the Revolutionary War period. No book shop, either! I can’t recommend it!
Pretty scenic views of the city and the surrounding area. Two cool forts which dont have too much historical significance since they never experience battle. In general the forts are kind of closed down and in disrepair. Would be nice if the NPS was able to invest some money into the park and make it a better experience.
You have to explore, otherwise you dont see any of the cool spots. I found a trail that goes through three (3) old tunnels that lead to a field, camp ground, and a beach! Its limited access since its under construction. There are a couple private beaches. You can hear the birds chirping and the waves crashing. Its a nice break from the busy city.
This review is wrong about Ft. Wadsworth. Its very small but it has a spectacular overlook under the Verrazzano Narrows Bridge. You get great views of Brooklyn and really nice one of Manhattan. There are binocular pedestals there. But bring your own to intensify the view. Plus your up high looking down at the old fort, Battery Weed, protecting the harbor entrance. Its historic and scenic at the same time. Great photo spot. And the VZ bridge is so close and it looms over you to set up more tremendous photo ops. You could bring lunch and even picnic there. Its a little tricky to find but its also a great place to see a cruise ship go in and out. And at the right time you can see Navy ships coming into the Harbor. I highly recommend it. 5 stars.
Can you review a historical site? I guess I just did. I have the opportunity of seeing it constantly, but guided tours are available if you want to get a feel for the history involved. As for that giant metal monstrosity that looms above it, I have no kind words for that.
Fort Wadsworth is a great free place to visit for all ages. Good place for a run or bike ride with great views of the Verrazano Bridge as well as Manhattan and Brooklyn. Tours of the fort itself are offered where they bring you into the fort and explain the history of the area and its role in American history
Best camping spot great views clean toilets love the open air private showers. The huge gazebo over looking the ocean is fantastic. Free firewood everyday the staff is the best ever! They have food lockers. For folks that want more of a getaway instead of tent camping the now have mini home trailers overlooking the ocean.
Great spot... all parts of the Gateway National Park group in the hold Gateway area of New York Citys entrance is a great historical landmark with lots of evolutionary 1812 war memorabilia Sandy Hook Fort Tilden Fort Hancock Fort Wadsworth are all great historical places to visit and the National Park Service has Park Rangers you can do tours and have full history told you an answer any questions it really great places to visit especially if you love American history
A nice place to walk during fair weather seasons. The view of the Verrazano Bridge is spectacular and there are plenty of little treasures to find while exploring. If you walk east along the water, youll end up at South Beach and eventually the boardwalk. Coast Guard Sector New York is located here and so are the National Park Service. Theres a lot going on within this space but its still friendly for visitors.
One of the military installations built to protect New York City from foreign attack especially Britain. It was part of a system of forts built all around New York Harbor strategically to repel sea invaders. NPS rangers do a great job interpreting the history of the fort. Excellent scenary from several vantage points.
I visited this fort with a walking tour group and had a great visit. It was a former United States military installation on Staten Island in New York City, situated on The Narrows which divide New York Bay into Upper and Lower halves, a natural point for defense of the Upper Bay and Manhattan beyond. Prior to closing in 1994 it claimed to be the longest continually garrisoned military installation in the United States.Today it is managed by the National Parks Service and is open to the public as part of the Gateway National Recreational Area. We were able to get a park ranger give us a tour of inside the fort which was educational and cool. Admission is free. The weather was beautiful and the views of the Verrazano bridge and water were amazing. We did see a few people walking around or sitting on benches enjoying the scenery surrounding the fort.Definitely a different and cool place to check out in NYC.
This place is one of the gateway national park can catch great view to verazano bridge Chanel, the park also got great visitor with ranger guide and 6 camp site for enjoy the closest NYC sky , the fort is huge , the greatest way to checkout the fort is see from overlooked can see background of New York verazano narrow channel and Brooklyn to Atlantic breeze, really love this place nice and quiet with highly recommend to visit
I love Ft. Wadsworth. Im not a big city person, and Ft. Wadsworth gives me the space I need to enjoy living near the big city, going over to Manhattan daily, retiring to my quiet place in the evenings. Its old, and, as with so many govt places, the recent face lift never touched the plumbing. The tub is clean, though, albeit ancient, for showers and theres no shortage of hot water. I am referring to the Coast Guard Guest Quarters. The fort is undergoing changes. The park police horses are gone somewhere. Battery Weed lies below the heights in desolate eminence below the grandeur of the Verrazano Narrows Bridge. Dwarfed on the horizon lie the skyscrapers. The city may never sleep but Staten Island does, and snug away from the bright lights, so do I.

2021-09-08Very cool and interesting place to visit. Lots of boards with info about the different things you are seeing. I did not enter Battery Weed as it was locked but it was fun to see up close regardless. The views of the water, bridge and skyline are great. There are benches also closer to the bridge if you just want to relax and take in the view. Check out the old defense cannon by that area also.

2021-05-15A well-signed historical fort and battery once used by the Army in the 19th century to guard the mouth of New York harbor. As the technology of war advanced, the stone fort buildings became obsolete as a means of defending the harbor, and they have been abandoned. Nature has began reclaiming the area, with vines growing into and on the roofs of the historical fort.
