Where else can you dine, wine and have a great time with your friends and family amongst so much history. Every time I come here I marinate in the nostalgia of American History. An extremely under appreciated venue. Regardless this place is the gift that just keeps on giving - amazing line up of Beers and Whiskey. Great good food. Huge place and an awesome venue. Play the impresario here with your friends, will strongly advise to look up the history of the building first. What a place to drink in the museum of American History
You can palpably feel the history oozing from the walls of this joint. It was so on point, and there’s a museum I’ve gotta go back for! Dark wood surrounds you, as well as whiskeys, wines, ales, and drinks galore, low lighting adds extra mystique and the menu held a variety of choices (one star off for not having complete printed menus to make ordering easier). Tasty food. Everywhere you turn, there’s something to stare at and they don’t rush you to leave so long as your drink’s there. Live music, I’d suggest dressy casual wear (don’t be bummy), and you may or may not need to make a rez, depending on the hr. We got there around 5pm, right before the dinner crowd and “reserved” table signs. So many rooms and corridors! A repeat, most def.
Beautiful old tavern, the food is out of this world, the staff is amazing, the place is packed! Have a Founding Fathers experience, get some fish and chips, chicken pot pie, sticky toffee pudding. The museum is upstairs, the restaurant is in 2 separate rooms and there is a bar in 2 other spaces. It feels like the place keeps going on forever. Seems like a lot of locals get together there, too. Good meeting place for bigger groups if you have a reservation. We were just 2, so got a table right away. When the weather is nice, there is outdoor seating too.I know everyone is short staffed and with so many patrons, its tough to stay on top of bathroom trouble but these guys get on it if you let them know. Not their fault, there were some heavy drinkers, clogged a couple sinks in the cramped ladies room. Cmon people, be decent.
Went for dinner here last night because it was close to my hotel and wanted some healthy food. Ordered steak, with veg and thankfully they put sauce on the side. Everything was Luke warm coming out. The fries were clearly there for ages because the Parmesan was put on when they were already well on the way to cold. The vegetables were the wrong side of Al dente and practically raw. I like my carrots raw but not when Im paying for them to be cooked. 🤣The cost here does not reflect the food. Do yourself a favor and go somewhere else.
Everything was so delicious. We had the Pot Pie, Fish and Chips, and Grilled Cheese and Tomato Bisque. We followed that up with the Stocky Tofie Pudding. Everything was so delicious. My only beef was that they did not give a Military Discount - even on Veterans Day. Definitely recommend this tavern but they could step up to the plate and honor those who served in such a historic venue.
If you are visiting the financial district in NY, make sure to stop by for a bite at this landmark. Knowing that you are sharing the same space with George Washington (at some point) is an incredible experience. We had burgers and where excellent. But the best was the president punch, what a cocktail.Very friendly staff as well.Defenitely a very satisfying experience. Thank you!!
Great. This is a very fun spot with lots of different dinning options. The main dining room is quiet but it has 2 (yes two) bars that are amazing. Old and fun and somewhat loud but lots of booths and lots of fun to eat in the bars. Be sure to get the bread pudding dessert and the fried cheesecake rolls are amazing. She loved the clam chowder and the Scotch Eggs (sausage wrapped and then fried eggs). We got extra dipping sauce for the scotch egg because it was soo good. I loved the chicken pot pie and the German pretzel was the best I have ever had. Crisp outside and soft inside with 2 amazing sauces. A very fun place with live fun music in the bar dining areas on weekends. Highly recommend this place. Casual dress in encouraged. Check out all of our reviews. If we do not like it we do no review it so all of the ones you see are places that are fantastic. Follow us if you like. We had over 7 million views in 2021 and we thank you for that. Must see (and must eat) place in Manhattan. The oldest functioning taverns of the city that manages to serve great food.Highly recommend fish and chips and salads, especially the one with feta and watermelons. In general the food is very very good. Only one time I was slightly disappointed (by Scots eggs, a little too greasy). Drinks are good too, especially simple Gin Gimlet.
Hadnt been back here since just before 9/11 happened. But I was so glad to go back to visit and have a nice meal and a cocktail. Its quite comfortable around the bar, I like to chat with the others sitting there. The bartenders were considerate and helpful. I loved the Roasted Chicken meal, such a big portion, I brought some home to snack on the next day. Beautifully historic building, as well as some museum pieces to learn about and see. Great for all ages...Ill be returning again!
A building and bar with a history going back to George Washington. Today the tavern still has that historic feel with wooden bars and style of furnishings, making it a very comfortable place to have a drink, eat or enjoy the live music. Didnt eat here but had a couple of drinks. Recommend the Irish coffee that is made with nutmeg.
I came here because of the history, expecting to have a decent meal, but nothing too special - I feel like a lot of historic restaurants can kind of coast on recognition. Not so here. The drinks and food were fantastic; I especially recommend the porter pie. The servers were attentive and kind. The bill was surprisingly reasonable for the amount of food and drinks we had. Really highly recommend. We will be back.
This historic tavern and restaurant has great drinks, food and staff. A friend I went with raved the bison burger she ordered was the best burger she had ever had anywhere. Drinks are NYC prices but great, generous and well crafted. The staff are wonderful, friendly and attentive. Food is truly worth the trip. Cant wait to go again. Glad it survived the pandemic. Historical figures like Washington, Hamilton and Burr once frequented this NYC gem.
Great place to eat with multiple atmospheres in one place. The restaurant is huge and had a variety of dining rooms to accommodate every diner or patron. Theres a transitional styled dining room, rustic dining room, larger pub style, cozy pub style. Its very cool. I cant think of another restaurant like this. The pot pies are my favorite dishes but they have delicious salads as well.
I have visited the site previously for its museum upstairs (Worth the time & money). This time, I went here for a bon voyage party. They had very attentive service, great beer on tap (I had an IPA) and the salads are delicious! I ordered the arugula and pear salad. Next time I drop by, I’ll try to aim for happy hour.
For being a highly-rated historical place, I was pretty disappointed. There is so much potential to turn this place into an incredible tavern, but instead it felt more like a cheap bar with trashy pop music (I don’t think George Washington would be too keen on this) and below average drinks.
So cozy and delightful after riding the Staten Island ferry. We got there right at 12 noon too which was lucky because they filled up fast--make reservations if you dont want to sit at the bar like we did. Bartender (Kevin?) is super friendly and familiar with the locals that sat flanking us. We got hit apple cider (spiked and unspiked) + a bowl of New England chowder that mightve been the best Ive ever had.
This is always one of our favorite haunts when we are in NYC! The aesthetic of the tavern and the history are just so amazing. The drinks are yummy and strong and the raw oysters are always delicious. If you don’t have this on your list of places to visit… definitely add it!
This was a cool place. Food was delicious. The Salmon salad with champagne dressing was amazing. Tavern burger was excellent. Large size portion. Reuben sandwich was so delicious. The roast beef had an incredible flavor. Drinks were good with a great variety. The fact that the tavern has been open since 1762 is wild!!
The tavern has so much history and character. Also, great food and service. We were a party of 14 people with no reservations. The staff were able to open a section that could accommodate our group, within minutes. The wait staff were accommodating to our varied readiness and moved through the group fluidly taking drink and food orders. Everyone around me loved their choice of food.
The food is really good. Love the atmosphere here, its definitely got character and some cool history behind it. I got the pot pie which was very fresh and so good. My guy got the fish and chips which was also fresh and delicious. Large serving size as well. He liked it so much he wanted to go back the next day.
Take a walk into history. Visit the museum and see the room where Washington delivered his farewell to his troops. The restaurant has a large assortment of food, all of which is delicious. The bar offers an endless choice of beers and ales and the whiskey room is unbelievable and memorable. Highly recommend for adults and children. You will have a memorable time...
I think entertainment is as important as the food.We were told an Irish band was to perform Sunday evening starting between 6 and 6:30pm. Our dinner reservation was for 5:15pm. There was a lone guitar singer that was playing pop type and some Irish music all the way up until 7:30pm when we left.Be careful if you are going to see an expected performer.Food was great. Place is great.
This old American restaurant was crowded on Sunday noon with slightly older, educated, well mannered, white ladies and gentlemen. The building goes as far as late 1700 when it was used for George Washington to deliver farewell speech to Continental army. Theres a museum in the same building ($7 per adult, $1 per kid). The food was great and reasonably priced (eg: $23 for Fish & Chips) The draft beer was $10 each which raised our entire bill. ;-)Great atmosphere, loved the crowd, enjoyed the food! I would recommend this place to anyone in the mood for weekend brunch / dinner.
Came for a quick dinner after we arrived into the city. Great atmosphere and service. Come for that. Giving it four stars cause that’s where they shine. Plus the history. The food is just so-so. Got the scotch eggs, good flavor but they fell apart when eating. Got the burger and it was on the dry side. Also, got the pretzel. Definitely get the pretzel cause it was the best thing we had there. It’s a bit on the pricey side but I prob just feel that way cause the flavor was mediocre. On the plus side, they are open for a late dinner so it met our needs.
Beyond the historical significance of this place, the food is amazing with a ride variety of drinks. The staff is great and also a great piano room with top notch talent. Well worth whatever you will spend, which is surprisingly not as much as you would think in a place like this.
Had the Bison Burger. The burger was juicy and soft but unfortunately it was definitely not seasoned very well and tasted rather bland. The bread that came with the clam chowder was stale and crumbled like a scone when torn. The scotch egg on the other hand was great!
The food was average and slightly over priced in my opinion. The atmosphere was fun and historical. I would recommend going for the museum and maybe a midday drink, but not much more.Ordered the oyster special (1 pint of oyster stout + 3 oysters for $14) which was by far the best value on their menu.
I was pretty excited to attempt out Fraunces based totally on the online critiques and excessive praise from friends, however it just turned into no longer as much as par with my expectations. I do suppose a number of it stems from the truth they have been simplest supplying outside dining once I went, but I think that might best remove from the historic atmosphere. The food turned into not tremendous, was first-class, just wasn’t some thing too special. The drinks even though were robust and precisely what I wanted. I definitely would like to go back to offer it some other go along with indoor seating and notice if the vibe provides greater to my revel in!
This is a wonderful restaurant and bar, or, rather, collection of bars under one roof. It knows what it is, as a piece of history and a tourist destination, and really leans into it. The food is on the upper end of what you expect from a pub: good sandwiches, great appetizers—try the pretzel—and okay fish & chips. There is a wide selection of beers, ales, and ciders, and the bartenders are skilled cocktail mixers. This has become my go-to place for taking friends and family who visit me in the city after we go downtown to see all the usual tourist traps. Fraunces Tavern, though, is anything but a tourist trap.
Im a history buff and have a tendency of following the foot steps of his Excellency George Washington. It was here at Fraunces Tavern (one of Americas oldest restaurants) where Washington dined. Upstairs is where he met with his generals after the British were defeated and evacuated New York. That evening was an emotional rollercoaster for Washington and his men as many tears were shed. Oh, did I mention the food and service were fantastic
Historical and interesting interior in a prime location. The Fraunces Tavern serves an extremely delicious crab cake which enhanced by the avocado purée it’s served on. The lobster Mac n cheese was good with thick macaroni and large pieces of lobster. Everyone around the table loved their chicken pot pies whereas the fish n chips was less popular. As appetizers the table shared large soft pretzels and sweet potato fries that all hot the spot. The service was at times slow but always friendly and helpful.
Pleasantly surprised! Ive been several times for lunch, the food and service are always excellent... Sure it is a tourist place but it is also a locals place and has been for several hundred years and they know what theyre doing. However this time I was only there for cocktails.. and they really delivered. Friendly super professional bartender making really pro cocktails, this is now one of my neighborhood cocktails go-tos.
I was pretty excited to try out Fraunces based on the online reviews and high praise from friends, but it just was not up to par with my expectations. I do think a lot of it stems from the fact they were only offering outdoor dining when I went, but I think that would only take away from the historic ambiance. The food was not great, was fine, just wasn’t anything too special. The drinks though were strong and exactly what I wanted. I definitely would love to go back to give it another go with indoor seating and see if the vibe adds more to my experience!
Great historic building. George Washington had many meetings in the building. Beer selection was huge. We had fish n chips with mushy peas. Fish was good n crunchy. Normally I dont eat peas but these had a decent flavor. Highly recommend a stop here. There is also a museum on the premises.
Great historical tavern going back to George Washington, hidden in a tourist destination. Looks both historic and corporate, with bars dedicated to whiskey and bourbon, but not showcasing anything interesting (buffalo trace?). Griping over, they had Southern Tier Pumking on draft, the only pumpkin beer I like. Awaome atmosphere, great service.
I got the avocado toast but without the ham. It was gigantic but I ate it all. It was super delicious!!!! The only bad thing was that it was very loud inside the restaurant. But later it got quiet and calm. I highly recommend this place! Especially for a family dinner.
This famous place served as a headquarters for George Washington. It was the main reason to visit this restaurant. The food, dessert was delicious 🤤. First, we didn’t know about live music, it was cool to experience it with a banjo.FYI: live music is on Saturday from 8 pm
The service is slow. Waited 30 mins for my order of 3 cheeses. Took it to go And discovered they only gave me 2 types with just 3 prices of each. Called to get the other cheese and had to wait another 15 after calling ahead. Definitely not going back. This is the third time I tried to give them a chance
This could have been a great experience. The food is good, the atmosphere is great. The only problem and it because a major one for me, is how rude the bartender was to me. He spoke to me like I was stupid and got an attitude when I tried to explain that the hostess told me to wait in his precious Whiskey bar despite there being no customers present. He implied that because I was to young to drink (I’m not, I’m in my 30s) that he didn’t want me there. Just because someone is young doesn’tMean you should speak down to them. Treat human beings like human beings. It ruined the whole evening for me.
I went to Fraunces Tavern last week to celebrate my 50th after hearing great things from a friend, and I must say I was very disappointed! The service was very slow and the staff seemed very unwilling, not what you expect from such a high rated business. My trip to New York was great and I really enjoyed all the sightseeing and restaurants that were actually good. We spent the first day on a boat trip and the second getting a cheeky look at Liberty! What real dreams are made of! The third day was spent in a beautiful art gallery with my wonderful husband of 31 years, still going strong! Such a magnificent city, shame the Fraunces Tavern didn’t meet high hopes!
I cannot tell a lie...at least when it comes to this place. Having just come from Green-Wood Cemetery where the Battle of Brooklyn took place its nice to go to the place where George Washington said goodbye to his fellow officers at the conclusion of the Revolutionary War.I doubt the soldiers of the Continental Army were able to order a bison burger with fries but it is a good choice for lunch. There are a lot of local brews available at this historic place. While this place may date back to the 18th century they have modernized. They do accept credit cards and the restrooms are American Standard.
This place is living history! Literally. I first learned of Fraunces Tavern in grade school. George freaking Washington was here. He bade farewell to his troops here. (Saving the nascent country by putting on his spectacles here -Google it). That being said, we came here for the food, not just the amazing, step back into the 1700s atmosphere.Had the lobster mac n cheese. So much lobster practically a 1:1 ratio with the the macaroni, pretty amazing. Also the Tavern Burger. Perfectly cooked, topped with bacon and onion ring. GW would have been proud and I was extremely happy with the meal. Also the service was incredible. Considering how busy the waiter was, he was so attentive to our table, prompt and extremely courteous. This place gets no better. Wish I could give more stars.Enjoy
Fraunces Tavern is a great choice for a date, family dinner, etc. It’s also neat that there’s history that goes along with the restaurant. I’m bummed that I didn’t get to see the inside of the restaurant, thanks COVID, but judging by pictures it seems awesome. I will say that the outdoor seating/live music setup they had was one of the better situations I’ve seen in the city.As far as food goes, I really enjoyed my entree. I ordered the salmon, and it was cooked exceptionally well. The inside was softer than the outside, and they hit the desirable “crisp” on the outside of the fish perfectly. The cauliflower purée, as well as the mushrooms, complemented the fish well and did outweigh the flavor of the salmon. The service here was good, but nothing outstanding. I really want to come back to dry another dish, as well as to see the interior of the restaurant. Overall, though, I was more than satisfied with my experience at Fraunces Tavern!
Even though i would give 5 starts to the restaurant, this review is for the museum located above the restaurant.I enjoy NYC history and this is the right place if you want to learn more about George Washington, American flags and go through a little bit of history of end of 1700.Museum closes at 5pm every day and is 7$ for adults.Adding a couple of pictures from December 2021.
If the food was a good as the service and atmosphere, Fraunces would be a must see/eat. Maybe I just ordered the wrong thing or they had an off day, but my meal was pretty average. The churrasco steak was pretty tough and overcooked and the chimichirri sauce tasted like it came out of a can. I did enjoy the fried cauliflower.
Food was above average at best. Service was pretty poor. The waitress on this particular night was just clueless. Dont want to take away from the historical vibe that makes this a major part of Old world NYC. The bar is fun, with live music and its definitely a great tavern that takes you back in time.
Excellent outdoor seating with individual igloo style or partial cover. Every single person was very friendly, accommodating and attentive. Margarita and Old fashioned are good strong cocktails. Cucumber gimlet tasted like lysol. Scotch egg was tasty but pricey for $15 for one egg. Short rib burger was excellent and priced well. Chicken pot pie is a must have and a quality comfort dish.
Absolutely love this place. They have great food, an awesome drink menu, but that isnt even the best part about this establishment. Their manager Ricky, and their staff really stepped up and made our recent event a huge success. If you are looking for a great place to have a fun evening and where they treat their customers well, this is that place.
Update 6 months later with a disappointing lunchtime review.Service was good, but the food, specifically the fish and chips was not up to scratch. The fish was advertised as cod, but it was lukewarm, soggy and undercooked. Tasted nothing like my expectation of cod.And then to add to the mess that this menu item suffers from, the mushy peas were stone cold, just pulled out of the fridge. As an English expat who has eaten plenty of fish and chips in his life, who on earth thinks the mushy peas should be served refrigerator cold.Do yourself a favor and if you are dining at Fraunces Tacern,.skip.the fish and chips menu item.Fraunces Tavern is still a cool place for a drink, just choose your food wisely.A cool place for drinks or lunch/dinner. Probably the closest place to an English pub I have experienced in the US. Has character from its history. we had lunch today and the service was excellent. Will go back in a few days for dinner ant that will probably raise my rating to 5 stars. Lunch today was good, just not outstanding.
I like to consider myself a bit of a history nerd, particularly when it comes to the American Revolution. When the opportunity presents itself to eat at the very same tavern where George Washington gave his farewell address to his officers after the war, how could I pass that up? The historic vibe and authenticity are well-maintained, and I cannot speak enough about how much I loved that. But let’s set that aside for a moment, as I did not get to visit the museum portion. The atmosphere in here is incredible, and authentic. The food is beyond delicious, and incredibly filling and hearty (though not to the point where you regret eating). The prices are quite reasonable, especially considering the location ($36 for two Bloody Marys, a full sized appetizer, and a full sized entrée - viva brunch!). The staff is super friendly. The cocktails are delightful, the beer and whiskey selections are a dream, and there’s a series of visiting or rotating taps that mean no two visits here are ever going to be precisely the same - even though they’ll both be incredible!I very eagerly await my next visit here.
Lovely bar, great choice of craft beers and stouts. Highy recommend the stouts. We originally heading down here for the Dead Rabbit but lucky for us it doesnt open till 4pm.so Kevin the bar man looked after us with good beers and craic about back home (ireland) Ignore the Dead Rabbit next door this place is as good and opens earlier 👍 😀😉
Service was horrible, people that were seated after us and ordered after us received their food before us. Wasnt even offered refill on ice tea. Flat iron steak sandwich was horrible. It had more gristle than meat, and so much mayo the sandwich kept falling apart. Fries were greasy and cold. Would not recommend at all.
Honestly, this is one of those places that is impossible to find fault with.Fraunces is seemingly a labyrinth of several historical restaurants in one. The main dining room with its long, rough hewn tables and pews. The chefs table, a tiny room that seats only 12. The main bar area with live music and a jovial vibe. And of course the tiny Dingle Whiskey bar, which is the subject of today’s review.Last night, we were lucky enough to snag one of the coveted fireside tables in The Dingle for pre dinner drinks. I suggest you arrive just before the dinner rush for a chance at this spot.(For the record, we’ve eaten in Fraunces main bar many times before. Standard pub food and vibe never disappoint)The entire point here is the history and the whiskey - and the tiny size makes it one of the hardest seats to get in town. Want to impress a date or an out of town guest? Show them the 450 whiskey menu and remind them that George Washington sat in this very spot over 200 years ago.Neat whiskey not your thing? The mixed cocktails are exceptional as well. This is the old NY you’ve been searching for and the roaring fire is simply a bonus.
Hands down the best place weve been to in NYC. Lots of history. Excellent craft beer list. Best bartenders youve had. Amazing ambiance. This is a definite must see. There is also a museum, at an additional cost. Save yourself the dough and just buy another drink. Embrace the history. Look at the floor boards above. Now thats real wood! Multiple bars to choose from within.
This has to be one of the coolest spots Ive ever drank in. You walk in and feel transported to American Revolutionary times, in fact George Washington had several meetings in this establishment! I honestly cant rave about this place enough, from the lighting to the music, to the foooood, good lord I was so happy! We sat in a little corner table and ordered the house beer (same name as the establishment, definitely worth a try) and some whiskey. We sipped on our drinks while we people watched the interesting crowd that gathered at the bar. Ill tell you one thing you must do... Order the oysters! I was in heaven with my ipa and oysters! Great size and wonderful flavor, I couldnt ask for better. The server recommended the fish n chips or chicken pot pie, we went for fish and chips. Perfectly cooked cod, it was so fresh and flaky!Overall, what a cool experience in a historic place. Service was A+ as was the food.Plus its right around the corner from the Bull statue!
The place is very interesting by itself, historical, with more than 300 years, they even have a museum inside. Its also really cool to explore the many different rooms, all on low light, keeping their tavern mood. The food is really honest, generous portions and a price range that is affordable compared to other places on the surroundings.
Historic pub/restaurant where George Washington once addressed his troops. Theres a small museum upstairs to commemorate this.I had a cheese and meats plate that was tasty, along with an imperial stout.Great selection of some hard to find craft beers, both bottled and on tap, including Porter House beers (on tap) imported from Dublin. Deep selection of spirits also, including Dingle Gin (personal favorite) from Dingle, Ireland.Cozy atmosphere but on the pricey side.On a subsequent visit I had a Tavern Burger which was overcooked and basically tasteless. The bacon on top was plentiful so I had some hope, but somehow even the bacon didnt have much flavor. So pick something else if youre going to dine here.
Portions are more than enough and some items are great for sharing. Something I didnt know before being seated is that there are 2 sides to the restaurant and they have different menus! One side (the side we werent seated at) had better vegetarian options. The real reason to visit is the museum though! I had no idea we would need a couple hours to explore all the different floors and rooms that compromise this museum. Definitely worth a visit for any American History fan!It is easy to walk from here to Trinity Church, or to the Battery.
Waited 40 minutes for a seat just to be ignored by the overworked waitress (management refuses to pay people well, so they cant get staff). $35 plus tax/tip and 2 hours of ones life for a meh burger. The museum upstairs is just something to list on the website and you wont actually be allowed to visit.
Fraunces Tavern was a great restaurant. We didn’t have an opportunity to go through the museum upstairs, be we enjoyed our dining experience. Stepping inside was like stepping back in time. Loved the decor, and the different rooms to give it an intimate feel. We sat near the band, which was fantastic - incredibly talented musicians. The music and atmosphere set the mood, and the food didn’t disappoint! My husband had the Reuben and devoured it. I had the chicken Cobb salad, and almost completely finished it. Delicious!
I really enjoyed this historic tavern. Its located in downtown Manhattan and is packed full of history. The building is old and has retained its character. The staff were very friendly and helpful and we had lunch there which was lovely. Theres plenty to look at on the walls in the bar and there is also a larger restaurant area. A lovely place to stop on a hot afternoon.
So exciting for me to eat at this historic place. Delicious meal. To eat in the dining room you need to make a reservation. Otherwise theyll seat you in the bar area which is much louder. We did have a reservation and had a great meal. Amazing drink selection as well.
Fraunces Tavern was an amazing experience pairing modern cuisine with an atmosphere straight from the Revolutionary War.Being one of the oldest buildings in NYC it was memorable just walking up to the front door. The architecture stood out the second we turned the corner making the last of our walk to the building. Once walking in the step back in time continued with the beautiful setup. The staff was extremely friendly and from the greeter to the waiter made my daughters day. The food was outstanding and well worth the stop. We tried the chicken pot pie which was one of the best we’ve ever had and finished it off with one of their desserts.Overall we had a great time that we will soon not forget!
Ill be brief....very disappointed in the service, server was not very friendly and inatentive. Hell we werent sure she was our server until we asked. The meal was just ok, not bad, just bland. On a positive note, there portion sizes where good, so you can share if youre not a big eater and my Manhattan was outstanding .... Have been looking forward to eating here for an entire year, primarily because of the historical significance. Needless to say, VERY DISAPPOINTED 😢My stars guide:1.) run for the hills2.) do not recommend3.) recommend with hesitation4.) recommend5.) recommend with extreme prejudice
This is a cute place with a little interesting history as well. Almost everyone in our large party ordered their famous chicken pot pie. The sauce had a nice flavor, the chicken was tender, and I liked that they used fresh peas. Since we were in a room to ourselves, we were also able to order their huge pretzel. It was good but nothing spectacular.
This place is a 5+ stars, at least for those of us who love ambience, good food, great beer, coupled with being surrounded by history. George Washington toasted his troops here in 1783 at the end of the revolutionary war. The place has tried to stay true to its history. I never grow tired of visiting this place, one of my favorite lower Manhattan haunts.
Great selection of craft beers and an extensive whiskey and wine list. Love the food. My boyfriend ordered a filet mignon on a hot sizzling stone with truffle mashed potatoes. Went here for my birthday and we loved it. The museum upstairs is great too but it closes at 5pm.
Unique little Tavern with historic meaning as well with ties to Washington. Convenient given the location near Wall St., the Tavern has both a bar side and a dining area with slightly different menus. In addition to this there also is a museum that lies upstairs with various historical artifacts. We didnt contribute to the museum, but did enjoy the tasty eats and got in and out in roughly an hour at peak lunch hour.
Great place for drinks food and history. Flight of beer was a nice choice so I could try out different flavors. The steak cobb salad was really good. The lobster Mac and cheese is a must try! So much lobster and absolutely delicious. The 2 upstairs floors are a museum. This was a very interesting visit.
The oldest pub in town - the town of NYC! Just beside the dead rabbit, and the irony is this place is like the rabbit hole: you just go from one room to another room, another atmosphere, another vibe!!Starts off with the fine dining - which is mostly reserved - then transitions to the good-old-pub we all know!Of course not the place for engaging or large group conversations - rather the general college ruckus!! (That is, the pub is too loud to talk)
A small museum upstairs, but its mighty on history. Their collection of revolutionary items is amazing. I only wish there were more artifacts. The stories attached are very informative. We also enjoyed working as a family to use the cipher to decipher the secret message in the espionage room.
For a city as steeped in history as New York---and by New York I refer to old New York, which by definition refers to Manhattan and New Amsterdam (its first European name)---none of its original buildings remain. Fraunces Tavern is about as good as it gets. While many that visit know that it is old, almost none realize that the structure was still built more than a century after the Dutch founded the city in 1625. Regardless, far far too few tangible pieces of New Yorks Revolutionary War history remain and Fraunces is one of them and significant no less for its actual history of being the spot where General Washington dismissed his officers after the war, both a politically unheard of event for its time and historic in a sentimental sense. The museum upstairs has long been host to tourists and school kids alike, well worth a visit during its somewhat limited hours. As for the restaurant, I have eaten and imbibed here many times and can say it is one of my favorite spots in all the city. I had a birthday dinner here, co-hosted with a friend. Great choice of beverages, including my favorite Irish hard ciders.
Very tasty dishes and great serving. I was also pleased with the wonderful people who work in this restaurant. We were served by a waiter Tamara and thanks to her courtesy I was pleased to be there from the first second.Great location, I will definitely go back to this place.
Hard to believe this historic building still stands and operates in the heart of the city, amongst skyscrapers and subways. When you step inside you are instantly taken back to colonial times. Definitely reserve your dining time (lunch or dinner) and spend the extra seven bucks to do the museum tour upstairs. Its worth it!
Really cool tavern with lots of history! They have a huuuuuge beer list. My husband loved the Fraunces Ale and I enjoyed my fruity wheat. We split a Reuben sandwich and sweet potato fries ... delicious!! Wish we would have had time to stay a little longer and try more beers/drinks and food. Definitely a must-go-to if youre in the area!
We are in the habit of visiting the oldest bar in each city we go to, and this was it for New York City!!! Built in 1719 and the site were George Washington addressed his troops in 1783, this place has some history. The decor was awesome!!! You could feel the history dripping off the walls. They have church pews for sitting for some tables. And the holiday decorations were beautiful. The service was excellent. The food was pretty bland. The cream of turkey soup lacked anything of seasoning and was still wanting after half a shaker of salt and pepper went in it. George Washington’s Horse back did not seem to have much horse meat in it—just a bacon wrapped date that was ok. The brown bread was a bit dry (no butter given). The mashed potatoes (the “creamy red mash” or something like that) was quite good.
Being a symbol comes with a big responsibility. Its particularly the case when its associated with the title of the oldest like this place that is the oldest bar in New York City. Although being old doesnt necessarily mean its good as weve all been fooled more than once by that promotion, Fraunces Tavern stands as the full-bodied epitome of how the old can transcend beyond its frame, inspiring the new.
Eat in a tavern that Washington ate at? This is a no brainer, and you get a great meal and beer out of the visit. My wife really enjoyed her chicken salad, my burger was tasty. The wait staff seemed to be a little overwhelmed. We did visit on a Friday evening, so it is expected.
Hello!!!! I made an open table reservation. Computer was not working... We got there and only one waitress was serving inside, outside, and also taking temperature as a hostess. We sat in the bar area on the left, got regular water and that was it. I noticed the table next to us stood up and left when we sat. Exactly same thing we did fifteen minutes after. Not an issue. The entire area is a disaster, the lovelace (potterhouse) has no management so its staff has no hospitality skills and dead rabbit is not even open. Ha ha.See ya when I see ya!!!
Excellent food, service, and history here. The jumbo pretzel is the best Ive ever had, and Ive had a lot. Great salads, too. You can get flights of whiskeys to try too if youre interested in staying a while. Nice place to go after a sunset trip on the Staten Island Ferry.
I wish I could give this place 6 stars. I have been wanting to go there for years and actually got the opportunity to eat there 4 times this past week. You could talk all day about the history of this location. We got to tour the museum upstairs, highly recommend you do that. I tried the burger, fish n chips, lots of oysters and a few beers including oyster stout. My wife says the chicken pot pie is the best she ever had. Adam was our server twice and Kevin at the bar did an amazing job juggling a million things at once. With the service, the food, and an amazing location, this is a must go to for anyone visiting the waterfront area. I look forward to going back again next year.
After my friend took me here the first time, I loved it so much I was back with a different friend the next week. I haven’t tried any of their food but the beer and cocktails were delightful. I also love the interior—cozy overall and each room (there’s like 5 different bars) having a different atmosphere to it. I don’t know what it looks like other times but when I went during late November-early December, they had a lot of lights and ornaments decorating the bar that seemed to enhance the coziness.
Loved this place. Historically one of the oldest, if not THE oldest building in Manhatten. Where George Washington bid farewell to his troops after the war.The building has a museum, restaurant/bar and a whiskey bar to choose from. We were in the restaurant/bat on two separate days, each time the service and the food was great. Looking around I discovered the Whiskey Bar, it almost feels like its in a totally different building. theres a fireplace, overstuffed chairs and a big, wooden bar. Its quiet and a place youd love to sit and enjoy a whiskey. Stop by, youll certainly enjoy the history of the place, then the food and drink.
A couple of friends and I were in New York for the night and were drawn into this establishment because of the warmth of the lights outside and the vibe of the building. When we entered, we greeted by a very helpful hostess who explained the layout - which was a bit intimidating at first due the many spaces. The building and decor are gorgeous. When we ordered drinks from the bar, the bartenders were attentive and fun. My friends ordered cocktails which were elegant and tasty, and I ordered a red ale which, as the bartender warned me, was a slow pouring ale. It was delicious and he was super cool about me giving him a hard time for ordering another one, knowing that it was a bit time consuming. We were about to leave but found ourselves upstairs in the Piano Bar, and stayed until almost closing time. It was such a cool spot with great fun people, we couldnt find any reason to leave.Without a doubt, of ALL the cool places to be in New York, this is hands down my favorite, and I will probably stay in a hotel nearby, just to have access to this amazing place every time I come to NYC.
Went here tonight and had an unpleasant experience to say the least. Restaurant didn’t have 2 of the items I wanted to try the most, which is understandable given the certain economic difficulties but I wish the servers were transparent with their menu BEFORE taking our order. I originally ordered the beef pasta (which is the reason I wanted to go here in the first place) only to find out they ran out. I decided to order the pot pie but for $20+ it was not worth it. Ordered an appetizer as well that came out with our main entrees- again, if there was a delay, I wouldn’t of ordered an appetizer in the first place and a heads up would’ve been nice. When dessert time came around AGAIN what I wanted wasn’t available. Ordered something else, and after taking awhile we noticed our dessert was sitting in the next stall for about 6mins- the server had set down the platter, walked away and forgot about our plate and it was just sitting there. At some point I guess they remembered and brought it to our table- again it was just okay and at this point after my experience I was over the place. On top of all of this there were 3 servers that were in rotation of our table- not sure why (we seemed like the only table in this situation) but we were getting different service at all times. First server didn’t seem aware of the pasta being out, second server came to let us know and asked what we wanted instead. We told the first server (since we saw them first) and told them the replacement meal (they were unaware of the item being out in the first place and was confused). Second server came over and confirmed what I told the first server (don’t know why I was asked twice!?) Third server said they were taking over for the first server (although the first server was still coming around- I doubt they let them know or the situation) but never really got us anything besides our ticket when we were ready. Overall the experience was bad, the food was not the greatest, and with all the server issues they seemed unorganized.
My husband and I visited last week and it was great! The atmosphere is super nice with all the Christmas decorations and it’s so historic! The appetizer of fried cauliflower was great! I ordered the filet and it comes out on a hot stone and with these awesome sauces. It was probably the best filet I’ve ever had. So tender so tasty! However my husbands fish and chips weren’t that amazing. He wished he had gotten the filet. Overall it was a really good experience! Service was great too!
I really love this truly old school tavern that dates back to pre-United States. Both times Ive visited was on a Sunday afternoon when a traditional Irish band plays. Its a great atmosphere of you dont mind a noisy bar scene (I would rate it 6-7 for noise, with 10 being the loudest bar Ive experienced). There is also the Fraunces Tavern Museum, which is extremely interesting. I recommend spending an hour or two in the museum, and then heading to the tavern, or for a quieter meal to the restaurant.
A few places in the world, let alone New York City, can compare with the history and ambiance of this location. legend to have been a favorite of general Washington during the revolutionary war, you too can feel like were traveling back in time when sitting in the various and varied rooms throughout the building. Make sure to enjoy the fireside and the whiskey bar when available.
Large bar with a rich history and manages to balance the preservation with maintain a lively atmosphere. There’s a dining area which is comfortable, but the best option is seating in the bar room; booths and side tables with friendly waitstaff and great tap beer options. Highly recommended for visitors to NY and locals alike.
Historic and Classy Fraunces Tavern located in lower Manhattan is an exciting restaurant to visit and eat in. Dating back to the Revolutionary War, the building is old, although refurbished in recent years. If youre interested in learning more about this building, there is a museum for visitors on the 2nd floor. The menu is varied but mostly classic dishes, such as chicken pot pie. There is a whisky bar at the front of the restaurant for enthusiasts.A must visit for anyone who is interested in US history. Wait staff is attentive.
How can one rate an establishment that has survived as long as Fraunces Tavern?I took my 95 year old neighbor there for his birthday celebration with some of his former work colleagues. (A group of 10).We all ordered from the menu andthe service and food were outstanding!

2022-04-11This place was super cool if you like history. My head was turning in all directions just looking at all of the history. Every room is amazing and you feel like George Washington is going to come around the corner. We only stopped in for a drink and a snack. We mostly wanted to see the place. We tried the scotch egg and it was probably one of the best I’ve tried. Usually they are kind of dry but this one was moist, cooked well and had a great flavor. Our server was better than most NY servers we’ve experienced on our trip. She actually talked to us, made good recommendations and returned to see how we were doing. She even told us they have live music and we should come back. Overall it was a nice experience and I bet it would be a fun place to hangout if I were a local.

2022-05-23Honestly, I loved just about everything about Fraunces. The history alone is incredible, but I really wasnt expecting the food and experience to be so fantastic. I had my first Scotch egg which was delicious. We had the fish and chips (fries) and a rustic spicy chorizo sandwich. We also tried the Truffle Parmesan Fries which were outstanding. They had a live jazz quartet that sounded amazing and, quite frankly, jazz is not my favorite. We went because of the connection to Alexander Hamilton, but Id return for the food and atmosphere alone!

2022-03-09Ambiance and character abound. Great music, great depth in the drink menu. The staff was attentive but not pushy. They were uniformly polite and authentic. I was underwhelmed by the food. My Ruben was so so. The fries with truffles were amazing, but the Mac and cheese was simply boring. Go for the music, go for the drinks, go for great service. I would not go out of my way for the food.

2022-05-20Steeped in history and conveniently located in the heart of Wall Street, Fraunces Tavern is worth a visit for the atmosphere alone. The dining area has quite a lot of character and the food is alright, if a bit pricy for what you get. 2 apps and 2 mains quickly added up. Service is quick and good. Their bar area had quite the selection and was very lively. Overall, I’d probably recommend this place more for a drink than for dinner.

2022-04-05Historical lunch stop. Traditional decor, standard lunch fair. Wait staff seemed a little understaffed. Had a lunch reservation, arrived early and they were able to seat us. Bar area has a fireplace with a library feel, well stocked with rare, expensive whiskey and other liquors. Neat tourist stop.

2021-12-22An institution, the historic Fraunces Tavern continues to offer great customer service and delicious, well-made food. We asked the waitstaff for recommendations and each recommendation worked out perfectly for our group. The food tastes great and the experience feels unique.

2022-03-16Excellent customer service. Our waitress was very smiley and friendly all the time.I was a bit hesitant in the beginning to order Salmon in a bar, but this was incredibly tasty! Very flavorful; the purée was perfect! Great vibe, a bit loud, but there are other areas inside of the Tavern where it is more private and less noise. Highly recommend this place!

2022-06-18I came here a few times in the evening which is always nice but wanted to stop by for lunch. The burgers are great and really hit the spot. I’d definitely stick to beer if you’re here because the cocktails aren’t that great. The vibe is always fun and I can’t wait to come back again.

2021-11-18We went to Fraunces for our anniversary dinner, and we were not disappointed. The building itself was decorated for Christmas, and the food was fantastic. Our server seemed a little new, but we had a pleasant evening enjoying each others company and the food. I got the salmon, my husband got the short rib pie, and we shared a plate of the fried cauliflower. Definitely going to be on our repeat list in the future!
