The hike was beautiful overlooking the beach at one point. You can venture down the stairs to the beach as well. The museum was surprisingly large inside and included an abundance of detailed dioramas retelling American Indian history in the region, among other interesting paraphernalia. My family enjoyed the visit.
Ive had to been here at least 100 times! I grew up down the block. The preserve is amazing! So dynamic for its small size! They have a beautiful shore line, two ponds, a little grave yard... the trails are gorgeous, very private since not many people go. The museums dope too. Been there a few time. Pretty cheap, and you learn stuff about the Native American who lived on Long Island.
We stopped here for a visit because we wanted to check out new trails. The museum was so amazing we hardly had time left in the day to hike. Cross between Museum of Natural History, and childrens museum - we are going back again and again. My 8, 10, and 12 year old LOVED it all and then enjoyed hanging on the little beach skipping rocks. Beautiful - cant wait to go back
The museum is super fun even for adults but my favorite part is exploring the beach and trails that meander around/behind the building. Super serene with multiple marked trails to follow around! There are even signs posted to educate on the types of foliage in the area.
A Tranquil place. Very nice place for a walk and very informative with plants and trees around the park. It has an overlook to the ocean and there’s also an access stairs to the sea below. This place is relaxing and refreshing after a walk. i like the pond in the middle of the woods. It feels like a story set on a book. It has testrooms and parking area.
Beautiful quaint hidden gem in glen cove. quiet beach, moderate trails, spectacular views from the cliffs. notice the grey clay on the shoreline that the tides wash sand from to expose the rich resource that defined this location for native americans. stop by at the museum when its open but stop by for a hike year-round.
The trail 👣 was fun. I had a great 👍 morning workout. Came here during a school trip. The museum displays are very informative. A comprehensive historical data of North America which includes Canada, Mexico, United States was shared with student. Im very impressed with the historian because she did an excellent job of keeping all the students attentive.
This museum houses a wealth of Long Island specific geological and archeological history. I found myself amazed by the display cases housing various sea creatures found around the island. The dioramas on the native history were well done and informative. When youre done in the museum, head outside and hike the many trails on the property, including a stop at the shore of the cove.
Garvies Point is a historic gem on the North Shore of Long Island. The small preserve boasts colonial era gravesites and natural beachfront where erosion is evident by the varied piles of sand and clay. Geology classes from nearby colleges use it as an area to study. Elementary through secondary schools come regularly for its museum and workshops. The museum has a large collection of minerals and rocks, as well as Native American artifacts (both original and reproduction)and areas that show geologic time on our Earth and its impact on our lives. There is also a gift shop that caters mostly to the children who frequent the preserve, but some of the gemstone jewelry available is worthy of gift giving. Come check it out if you are interested in Long Islands geology & Native history, or just like hiking in a naturally beautiful area!

2022-03-20We have been to the quaint little museum several times, today was our first walk on the trails. We followed the loop trail from AllTrails. Lovely family home under 2 miles - made interesting by all the ups and downs involved. Took is about an hour. Clean trails, easy to follow. We had the AllTrails app running as there were many other trails cross crossing our chosen path, easy to go off track. Great use of an hour on a sunny weekend!

2022-03-23My son and I have visited Garvies Point 5 times now in all of the seasons. He loves going to Dino Daze each Spring and learning that the clay on the beach came from the remains of dinosaurs. He enjoyed the Native American Thanksgiving festival tasting popcorn soup, cooking meat over a fire, using sticks to scrape a log after hot coals were placed on it to make a canoe, getting his face painted with natural pigments from the clay and most especially learning to throw a spear. On school vacations he has enjoyed learning about flood plains and taking a guided hike showing how the boulders on the property are glacial erratics brought from far away. We took another hike to be nature detectives looking for squirrel, deer and raccoon tracks, insect marks on trees and even a few dormant hornet nests high in the trees. He learned that larger leaves grow on young trees to catch more sunlight to make food and larger trees have smaller leaves since they have so many more leaves, he shared that with his teacher proudly . Inside he enjoys the geology displays and the Native American dioramas. On our last visit my adult daughter joined us. She loved the peaceful beauty of the rocky beach, listening to the waves crash on the boulders at the shore. Well worth climbing the tall staircase to return to the parking lot. Both of my children found the gift shop irresistible, my daughter especially liked the mugs with moon and tree themes. My son is already asking me to return.

2018-08-09Great learning center for nature studies, Native American studies and much more. Museum is just the right size to engage young children but not overwhelm them. My kids really enjoyed their small camps and personalized attention.

2021-11-24Cute little local museum. Outdoor trails and indoor exhibits about Native Americans and local natural history and rocks/geodes. Our kids (6 and 10) had a nice time, and it is reasonably priced. Taking appropriate covid precautions. Friendly staff.

2021-12-27Great trails, can stay for a couple hours and go all around and take it slow or take a quick walk on some of the short quick trails. Stay on trails and Check for ticks before leaving (you should any time leaving a trail) this one particularly seemed to have a lot of ticks. Did find two on my sweatshirt upon leaving.
