This place is great and a must stop if your a record junkie and in the new york, New York area. It has two stories of used and new records of every genre. The staff is extremely helpful as well. I had asked the guy if he could put a record on so I can see what it was like and he did with no hesitation. Its nice to not see some hipster just giving you attitude for asking questions and patronizing there place of employment. Thanks generation Ill be back on my next trip to the city.
Ive been visiting Generation Records since the late 90s. Great selection of Punk/Hardcore, t shirts and used CDs. Prices are very competitive and they frequently have 1st press records and other gems. The Staff is super friendly and on point with support for your needs.
If you are an independent artist, do not leave your records at this store for sale. When your fans call the store will tell them your album is not available after you spend a lot of time and money promoting your record and the store. The manager will also refuse to identify himself and will accuse you of having an attitude when confronted about shady and unprofessional behavior by staff and management. Management will also defend staff and mock you about your record not selling although you are doing everything to promote your record.
The entrance host / brunette/cashier..was super accommodating ..in all areas. I found rare stickers shirts and giant posters that used to go for 30 plus dollars got them $10 that this place still stands in this century is a testament 2 the power of music/pop culture from the 20th century I even encounter a Patron Who was a club promoter in the 80s/band manager what are the odds
Everyone at Generation Records knows how much I love them but Ill never stop singing my praises. Ive been coming here for the past 4 years, from Milo to Amanda to Frank just everyone that works here are amazing, theyre like family to me. Everyone is super friendly, very funny, they actually take the time to chat with their customers and get to know us, as I can imagine they have a lot of stuff to do but they never make me or anyone feel like were in their way, always just so helpful. A good 90% of my vinyl collection is from here, thats how much Ive shopped here. Im still in awe at how eclectic and interesting and sometimes rare and unique their selections are, and the prices are always reasonable. Over the years Ive always been impressed at how theyre getting better and better at organizing the records by genre, and how professional they are on Record Store Day, they turn organized chaos into an art it feels like. I recommend this place to people all the time, and will continue to do so! Its my home away from home and is really the best NYC record store ever.
I make a trip to this store every time I’m in New York City. They have a great selection of heavy metal and punk vinyls and the staff seem nice and very knowledgeable. The only complaint I really have is that most of their new vinyl albums are really pricey. I always buy something to help support the store, but pretty much every album I picked up was $35-40, many of which are easily found online for about half that amount.
I cannot believe this place is still open. This makes me so happy. I used to come here in my teens to buy CDs and they always stocked the most obscure records. I think of it more as a music library - you can pass hours here just browsing. You should visit this place - a part of NYC history! This should definitely be a stop on any NYC punk/rock walking tour (when this pandemic passes)
Awesome selection of new and used records. There seems to be a good turnover with new arrivals coming in often. Staff was friendly and very helpful also. We were from out of town and he gave us some solid tips about other great record stores in lower Manhattan for us to visit but Generation Records was probably our favourite and in a great location.
One of New York City’s greatest record shops. There was a time when rummaging through a record shop was an incredibly fun and enjoyable way To spend an afternoon. And being as to how Record stores are becoming scarce, it is great to still have A store here in the village That caters to that sentiment. All in all phenomenal record shop
Hands down, my favorite record store in Manhattan. Been going here for YEARS. Ive spent whole days in here when I was a teenager. They always have a great selection, upstairs AND downstairs. You can lose yourself just looking at all their records they have for sale. Always love their shirts and hoodies selections for sale. Punk, Metal, Hardcore, and even Horror movie shirts. The best. Staff is always great and friendly. You have to purchase items from downstairs at the counter downstairs and upstairs items at the upstairs counter, but that isnt even a problem to me. Ive seen a show and book signing here as well and it was very well done. Generation can do no wrong.
A Treasure Chest, with lots of music industry item choices for everyone! Miles the dude working the ground level area gave some good advice on how to shop for a record player in this current market for those of us looking to get back into vinyl but havent been around a turn-table since maybe when our parents were raising us back in the day! Found some cool old school punk patches, Descendants & Operation Ivy, Rancid, NOFX! Strolling through this shop was a trip, a good trip! ;)
Absolutely fantastic place, I wish I had more time to explore the whole place! Downstairs is massive and has some pressed t-shirts i wish they had more sizes for but I cant complain if Ive never seen them printed before (eyeing that Grimes Oblivion shirt). Worth a visit if youre remotely nearby!
The main draw for me was this shops fantastic selection of hardcore punk records at reasonable prices (as well as other many other genres) which are expensive and rare to purchase in the UK. One of my purchases included The Return of the Living Dead soundtrack on vinyl - an item I have sought after for some time now. I saw it in a shop in Brighton a few years ago which was expensive. This was only $24.99 which roughly equates to £20. Other items include CDs, band/cult film t-shirts and Misfits figures! My only regret is I would have loved to have spent longer in there (much to the detriment of my bank account).
If you love Rock t-shirts, this is the place! All sizes are available here and there are mugs, keychains, 45s,CDs, and of course, vinyl records. There was even a live show when we went. This is a gathering place on a block with spots stop and hang not far from the square.
I went to a couple record stores on my trip to NYC, and this was hands down overall the best one. If you’re not sure out of all the record stores to go to, this is the one. Others usually specialize in genres and that’s fine, but Generation Records really has a bit of everything.
If you love music, and you still like to buy physical music like I do, then please support your local record store. Generation Records is a legitimate gem in a quickly changing neighborhood, one that once promoted art and music, and now caters to tourists. Generation Records is the Vintage Vinyl of New York City, selling new music, used music, vinyl, hard to find rarities and way more t-shirts than even Vintage! Some things have changed lately because its older brother store, Bleeker St Records, sadly went out of business recently and they had.to make room in Generation for certain items. So again, if you love music than Please support this place and any other record store that might be in your area. You wont regret it!
Unbelievable the selection of records this place has. Also, a great collection of CDs, and old skool toys like the old WWF action figures. Not sure you want an album? Ask the friendly staff, and theyll happily play it for you over the sound system. Lots of posters and T-shirts too.
Was looking for a particular record that I saw listed on their discogs account. Went in asking for it and was told that their discogs inventory was a separate entity. They have no way of checking what vinyls are in stock as only CDs are inputted into their system. When asked if the discogs inventory was kept on site or if I could rummage through it myself the cashier just shrugged. There may be some gems in there, but theyre probably buried behind the $39 new releases.
Metal and punk sections are extremely weak. If you want Great White and a Winger LP then this what they have. If you want typical goodwill records this is what they have. I didnt see much good at all. Lots of albums but lots of Goodwill type albums. Oddly I couldnt find either of the NYC jazz artists I looked for in their CD selection either. Truth is NYC is NOT the place for records and its a touch biz to keep alive in Manhattan I am sure. UNfortuantely teh worst was having to listen to teh staff guy downstairs go on and on about his band gigs with some guy that was hanging out there. Holy .... went on and on forever.
By now, a stalwart, because they still exists. They came years later than Bleeker Bob, Second Coming, Free Being, Venus Records, ect. But, Generation is still here when the others are all gone.Selections of rock, punk, metal and more on CD and vinyl. New and used. Videos and a few books. For this era, a good selection. They dont have everything, but almost no one else has anything..
Unfriendly staff even managed to growl at me because I took out one poster that later didnt bought, sorry bro but thats your job, they have a very good catalogue of records and bootlegs, is definitely worth stopping by and checking out but dont expect a warm welcome, I know I felt an intruder for the most part I was there.

2022-04-10Me and my dad are big into classic rock and have always wondered what the record stores in the city were like. So when we looked up the best classic rock record store in NYC generation records showed up. Boy were they wrong a very bad selection of classic rock almost nothing. I understand that people who are into things like jazz, easy listening like it however if you want to find classic rock records dont come here.

2022-06-20The selection was awesome! I found a Phoebe Bridgers vinyl for the first time in person, but I didn’t get it because I didn’t want it to get crushed in my suitcase. I ended up getting a couple t-shirts, and the girl checking me out seemed like she would rather be doing anything else. She looked so miserable. I hope she’s doing okay.

2020-11-28Tons of cool stuff in pretty much every imaginable genre:CDs, DVDs, cassettes, records, posters, pins, and more... And the prices were actually really low. I found The Music Man on DVD for $2.00 and it was completely intact, not a scratch.

2020-11-03Cool spot to browse for vinyl, cds and even cassette tapes. They have an incredible selection, super friendly staff and two floors to explore. My friend went in to ask for some obscure band she used to follow. They didn’t have it (and honestly were not familiar with the band), but they were happy to research and procure it.Pick up a pin or iconic tote bag while you are there.

2022-02-13Largest selection of vinyls I have seen in the city. They have a small selection of pop on vinyl but have a great selection of jazz, metal, soundtracks, etc. I found that the prices for anything that isnt used is a little higher than market price. There is a section for CDs as well with cool finds. They also have a lower level with posters, vinyls at a heavy discount, and CDs.

2022-03-15I am surprised a 2 floor vintage store like this still exists and retains its sizable market of shoppers... the selection is vast and diverse with something for all (merch, tapes, posters) especially for punk fans

2019-05-01Very nice and authentic place. They even got a selection of old or damaged vinyles you can take for free. I really enjoyed it.
