Its a beautiful place. Unfortunately they put 390 on one side, Elmwood is on the other meaning traffic can be heard. I have found it to be a refuge. Typically the park is less crowded. Also, I have not found a tick on my dogs or myself. We go through some heavy underbrush, tall grass and on the secret paths frequently. By comparison to Mendon Ponds where I found four ticks on my dogs and myself after one visit, I definitely prefer Genesee Valley Park. There are many features to the park. Several pavilions can be rented for parties. There is a fantastic brand-new playground at the corner of Genesee and Scottsville/Elmwood in the north west corner of the park. A second playground is on the east side and accessible by using the park drive off Elmwood. There are multiple baseball diamonds, a place for cricket and lit tennis courts. Also, the boathouse has kayaks and canoes for rental. The canal trail bike trail and Genesee bike trail intersect in the park, as such there is a fair amount of bikers. It is a great place to ride. Off-road on the paved path is very relaxing compared to on street riding. Its a great way to get comfortable with longer rides without the distraction of car traffic.Good birding, at least according to this non-expert. Many cranes, duck varieties, herons, blackbirds, etc inhabit the space. Canoeing/kayaking the river is a great way to see the lush life on the river. In the winter I enjoy following the animal tracks and guessing based on the size of the track. Squirrel, rabbit, raccoon and coyote have been my guesses. The park is home to innumerable ground hogs as well. Little in the way of deer. Rarely are their deer droppings except in the south east corner of the park where someone puts out bread for the wildlife.
I visit Genesee Valley Park for the trail system.I enjoy visiting this park because of the leisurely trail system that runs along the river from downtown... passing through the University Of Rochester Campus and connecting to this park. The trail also connects from this park onto the erie canal trail. The trail is great for jogging, biking, rollerblading or easy walks. 5 Stars!
Genesee Valley Park is one of the most well known parks in the city of Rochester. It has well maintained tennis courts, a public swimming pool which is heavily attended in the summer, 3 baseball fields and plenty of running, riding or walking trails. The firefighter training facility is on one of the trails and sometimes you can catch them practicing putting out fires.Theres also picnic areas with tables and grills. The playground was rebuilt in the fall of 2017 and went from two separate playgrounds to one. There is a medium sized building with male and female bathrooms that can be rented out for small events. The building hosts a day camp in the summer.
I go to Genesee Valley Park often to have a picnic and chill out with friends and family. This park is indeed great for barbeques and picnics. First, it is huge and has parking spaces around the park so you will be able to park near your picnic spot. Also, they have grills on several spots along with gazebo next to them. Great for kids to hang around. Overall, great place and would keep visiting here :)
Its a nice place to go if you want some peace and a piece of nature without going far from RIT. Its usually very pretty no matter the season. Lucky now and then you can see deers up close which I still find fascinating. In fall, the colorful trees are heart warming, in summer the grass and the pretty flowers are enticing. One of my favorite places in Rochester. A drive along the Genesee valley park is also very pleasant when the sun is still out and you can take in the view.I also like the bridges in the park, the ones over water bodies as well as the one over the highway .
Its a large park with open fields, trees, a major river, baseball and softball fields, pavilions, playgrounds, trails (waking, running or biking), tennis courts, a pool, ice skating, canoe/kayak rental, fishing and even a 36 hole golf course... Did I miss anything? Lots of space to do whatever you want to do.Its a beautiful asset to urban Rochester. A well maintained park that is clean and lighted. Parking areas in several areas. On the semi downside: I believe you carry your garbage out - no facilities for disposing of it. And public restrooms are pretty sparse.
Nice spacious.park. Urban feel. Woods trails are well worn. Mostly sidewalk and foot bridge walkways. Graffiti in quite a few places. Nice spots to sit on shoreline.benches. A few people playing music very loudly at picnics or parties. Usually some small recreational watercraft activity. Situated at the confluence of the north bound Genesee River, west bound Erie Canal, and north bound Red Creek. I carry here.
We played the South Course. I havent played their in 40 years. The course was in nice shape, but i thought the greens were in excellent condition. The course was very busy, but we still played 18 holes in under 4 hrs. Using a coupon from the entertainment book, $28 for 2 players, 18 holes and a cart is a bargain. We plan to go back and play the north course later this year. Nice day.
The guide never said hi when we arrived or asked what level we were. He took us on a not very wide course with down logs and tons of weeds. It was hard and not fun this was only our 2nd time out. The tour was suppose to be 2 hours but we were out for 2.5 hours. Got a 15 minute late start no communication as to why. Then the guide was not in front when we headed back I had no clue which turns another customer showed us the way. The guide was more interested in taking photos with his big expensive camera.
Played tennis here, able to get a court right away. Theres a sizable parking lot but people still park along both sides of the entrance road anyway (illegally).... why - when there is room in the lot? And why is that not monitored? Police in Rochester are so quick to give you $50 parking tickets on other streets, yet they let this happen along the road to the park where it actually IS a dangerous situation, especially with kids all around, theres barely enough room to drive through.....
Lots of room in the park big place to walk around in exercise do what you need to do or just chill relax and at the picnic benches or in your car really clean. maintenance is usually out all the time during the day. its a very popular Park in Rochester in the city. People hang out there during the day and at night.
This is a pretty nice park. Ive played kickball here for years and it has always been a fantastic time. Lots of wild life and they keep it mowed well. Sometimes parking can get tough during peak kickball and if the lodges are rented. There are definitely some odd vehicles that basically drive in, smoke or sell or buy some drugs then drive out, but its infrequent. You only notice it once in a while if youre sitting in the parking lot for a while. They think they are being sneaky but they arent.
This is a really nice park with quite a few picnic spots, play ground and jogging places. The best part is that there is a trail that runs on the both sides of the river and just close by enough so that you could have a nice sunset view. The park ends at the University of Rochester. There is a bridge that connects the other side of the river and it is also a fantastic spot for sunset. This has been my go to place for walks or biking!
One of my favorite parks in the city. Walking, biking and kayaking through the parks many trails and bridges is what sets this park apart. Also, there are many fields for soccer, baseball and other sports. Golfing (if thats your thing) and foot golf. The pavilions are great for renting too. On rare occasion, an occupied shelter can be near another and might be loud but the rest are spread out. Overall, one of the best!
A fun place where kids come to the area of the soccer nets and decide there are enough players to eventually form 2 teams to play the game. The adult acts as the ref. Size or skill doesnt matter as strangers, kids come together and get along as they have fun kicking a ball up and down a soccer field. What a nice view we enjoyed as spectators on an early Friday evening!
Played soccer here with my friends as a kid and they have a decent tennis court. I still go sometimes to walk the trails or go for a nice run. My friends and I still meet there to workout together in the open spaces as well. The area is good for reserving for bbqs and parties. Highly recommend it.
Seasonal bathrooms, so beware! They may not always be open! However, this park has the advantage of being a nature, so the phallic human has easy access to drainage. The trails are quite expansive, so a quick rest stop with privacy is not out of reason, but dumping is not recommended. Also its quite beautiful with pavilions and playgrounds for the whole family to enjoy. I recommend the pine area of the trails.
An absolutely huge oasis of nature in the middle of the city. A next-door neighbor to University of Rochester, this park has a little bit of everything including enough nature trails and out of the way nooks you could get lost, cool old bridges you can go over and examine, pavilions you can rent for events, a playground, and the coolest gosh-darn birdhouse you ever did see. More like a bird condominium. Definitely worth stopping by for an afternoon and enjoying the sights.
What a big beautiful park! Good community park. Lots of space for outdoor activities. Be sure to plan around local events like kickball if you want access to fields. Pavilions are worth renting of you have a big party coming in. Also has the pool and ice rink nearby. Kayak rentals available in season for on the canal.
I absolutely love this park. I ride my bike on the trails several times per week when the weather permits and it never gets boring. Frederick Law Olmsted parks are a local treasure and Rochester is lucky to have this one in the city. The park also has a huge public pool which I have used for lap swim during the summer.
Great park, always good shows in the summer for party in the park. Great big old trees for lounging and resting under their grand canopies, few of them are asking for volunteers to climb up and give them a one of those amazing tree hugs, dont wait until they are taking the trees away before you give them the affection they deserve, dont take nature for granted, go down to the river and visit those big oaks that hold up the sky over the park and if youre not up for a good old hug then just reach out your hand and just go with a solid hardwood hand shake. Be a good Rochestarian and help keep our trees happy and healthy with some love.
This place is much bigger than you might think. While its not really a place for hiking, its a fantastic place to bike, relax, or utilize an open field. Ive seen everything from LARPing to birthday parties here. Really worth the trip if youre on a bike; the park is an intersection of sorts for several trails.
Great up going to this park.Love having picnics and bbqs here in the Spring.Nice and beautiful park they just need to keep the crime down during the evening. And I guess some people go canoeing here and some fish here, but I wouldnt recommend eatting the fish. Who knows what contaminates might be in that river?Enjoy the fall leave colors changing and a long walk on the over pass bridge.
Beautiful grounds in the middle of Rochester. We were there for a xc meet and the place was packed. Before going for a nice day out, you will want to check if any events are happening so that you dont end up enjoying the area with 10,000 new friends. Even with such a large crowd, it is peaceful and beautiful. Easy parking.
Cheap course thats decently maintained. My only complaint is how big the aeration holes were on the greens. There was practically no point in putting because the holes were so huge and they werent filled in with sand to help smooth out the surface. The aeration holes made for terrible reads when putting.
Justed used the park as a starting point for our bike ride on the Genesee Riverway Trail and Canal Trail. From what I saw of the park, it appears to he a very nice park. Very busy with lots of people and picnics. A few different walking/biking trails seem to intersect it.
Never had an issue with the park until my sons birthday/graduation party. I rented a shelter, this year, which was not clean and had the smell of urine/raw fish during the entire time of the party. I continuously asked the park attendants for assistance and they came over and sprinkled Ajax where the stench was coming from. My family even purchased bleach to try to mask the odor, which did help. I contacted the park office for a refund and was refused because according to them we used the shelter for majority of the duration. My family intended on staying longer but several people left do to the awful smell. I will never book this park again for any event. I am not sure why I have to give this one star in order to post my review, because in my opinion one star is too much.
Genesee valley Park is a beautiful and will maintain park right in the city of Rochester. it has a golf course, mini pavilions which can be rented, and lots of space to enjoy a game of frisbee or something like that. It also borders right on the Genesee River and canal and there is kayak and canoe rental on site.
I grew up living across the street from Genesee Valley Park. There has been waves of good and bad within the park over the years. I like the park, but would be cautious traveling through the park at night. Personally, I have witnessed crime on various occasions within the park. Overall, the park is nice and generally clean... just a few people ruin it for many at times.
The fields are extremely uneven. The grass is always cut but you need a level field for most sporting events. Facilities are far away from many of the activities fields, which makes it difficult to reach mid game. Could use some upgrades, including lights. It could be better for the use it gets from KLOR and other organizations that use the park.
This is a great park, with a lot of areas to walk around. It is quite popular though, and the pavilions are often reserved for parties, so expect to see lots of people if you go.If youre up for a longer walk, the park works as a nice starting point to walk along the Genesee Riverway Trail and the Erie Canal Heritage Trail. The Genesee Riverway Trail heads north through U of R, all the way up to High Falls, and at least a little ways beyond. It might also head south, but Ive never tried to go that way.The Erie Canal Heritage Trail heads both east and west for a very, very long way (I think the trail goes all the way from Buffalo to Albany, even though parts of the canal are gone).
Great place to take a walk or bike ride especially if you like water. Beautiful views of the Genesee River and the Erie/Barge Canal as it crosses the Genesee River. Park is the work of Frederick Law Olmstead. Be sure to take the bridges that cross over both the Canal and the River. Wander North of Elmwood Ave to take in the University and views of the city of Rochester
A beautiful old city park along the Genesee River with a scenic golf course, outdoor Olympic size swimming pool, indoor ice rink, marina where you can rent boats, pavilions and picnic space and long beautiful walking paths trough the large park along the river. The park is located between the University of Rochester River Campus and the intersection of the Erie Canal and the Genesee River. Grab a picnic basket, golf clubs, life jackets and enjoy Rochesters Genesee Valley Park!!!

2022-04-12This is such a beautiful location. Great for picnics, hiking, biking, playground, and more. The parking area was a little rough to navigate and needs some upkeep, but otherwise the park is beautifully maintained. Always a favorite spot for my family.

2021-06-29The Genesee valley park is a large park with plenty of walk ways, biking opportunities, and gazebos. Its a very good park in a central location in Rochester with access to both river and canal pathways.

2022-05-28Beautiful greenery that is expansive and easy to find a semi private place for you, the kids, and your pets in during social distancing times. Has sun, shade, grills, and covered gazebos. (Not sure if rental is needed.)

2022-05-12The course is actually in fine shape right now, and I had no problem playing behind the daytime league today. What was unacceptable was the staffing of the snack bar. One employee was alone as 25 people all finished their league at the same time. This employee did an amazing job, but the magement failed their employee and their customers. I am a head chef with over 10 years of experience, and I could never take orders from 25 people then go cook their food in a timely manner. The manager needs to come work the grill during the after league food rush. Again, the employee did a stellar job, but the situation was impossible and customers were getting more and more frustrated. Staff appropriately!

2022-01-07This place is a very beautiful place in the fall and the spring also just after a snowfall. There are good running tracks and also good cycling tracks. This place is kids friendly and have roofed area for gatherings. However the gathering area was muddy and not well cleaned when I was there, also there were some other muddy areas as well.
