Look. I dont mind paying premium prices for premium products. However the customer service here is abysmal. There are always 3 or 4 employees standing around chatting amoung themselves and not paying attention. Their policy of outright REFUSING to give you a bag until you have completely unpacked the entire contents of your (often very full) basket onto the little shelf and gone through literally the entire checkout process with them standing behind you making sarcastic comments is the most frustrating part of my day when I go there. Its almost not worth going there. Ive even tried giving them 5c coin in advance to prove Im not trying to avoid paying 5c but the process of unpacking and balancing everything only to have to repack it when you asked for a bag 5 minutes ago is ridiculous. Go to Fairway instead,
Rating based on the awesome Colombe selection of decaf & reg coffee in addition to the bread section where they sell this amazing whole grain spelt flour bread. Other than that, the grocery items are meh and overpriced. But given the demographics and loc. of the supermarket it all makes sense. Overall Gourmet Garbage ahem, I mean Garage is an ok place.
OMG!!! Always always food not safe temperatures are way to warm for seafood eggs etc look at this quiche with good till date of 6/9 and my photo of 6/3. It’s crawling with mold and there are towers of mold climbing up from tomatoes!!!!!! Where the hell is the board of health.??? Constantly getting sick from their food. Last time.
One of the better places in the area to get breakfast from in the area. Decent price and a good variety of breakfast items. The employees are very nice warm and inviting. The lunch is ok they make the most out of the space allotted. Prices are about the norm for the area.
They have quality items, many of which are still overpriced. Service at the various counters is v good (prompt and expert), in my experience; however, cashiers are often inattentive . Theyve also, much to my disappointment, stopped carrying certain items I used to like and go there for.
I usually pop in here to buy a prepared meal. Always delicious and healthy.I love their cookies and cupcakes made by Gourmet Garage. What I enjoy most is that I usually find some condiments that I cannot find in a grocery store. I like that. Variety keeps me on my toes.
Its small and convenient in the neighborhood. Small selection of everything, high quality products, organic, wholesome, nice baked goods, fresh produce but again, small selection but high quality. I havent tried the sushi bar or prepared packaged foods or the butcher section (as Im vegetarian) but Its there. Its relatively small but you can find a remarkably huge variety of a little bit of everything of high quality. The more you look the more you find!
I hate this place... I pass it on my way home, but I decided not to spend my money there anymore. First of all, it is insanely overpriced. The selection is OK, but most of the common items can be bought for half the price in regular supermarkets. You almost always have to queue to pay. What bothers me are the specials: they always put this huge signage SPECIAL $$ OFF, but when you get to pay, it almost always charges the full price. Then you have to argue, have them go check it and waste time. It is incredibly inconvenient. They rely on people not paying attention to how much is charged at the cashier, and the specials are really just a trick. I dont like that, it is not about the $1 off, but about the principle.
Best for a quick take-out: they have Pizza, Sandwiches, Sushi, Salad Bar, and a Soup Bar! Also a decent place for fresh meat and cheese in particular, and the biggest plus is that theres rarely a line. The downside is that most things are a bit pricey, especially produce - Wholefoods 7 blocks down is generally cheaper.
This place is an incredible disappointment. For a store that had a virtual monopoly on high end grocery 10-15 years ago, Gourmet Garbage has virtually become on par with your local bodega. In fact, I’d argue it’s significantly worse given that prices are 1.5-2 times higher than the bodega.
A vast variety of ready to eat, great quality meals. Stop by for a steamy cup of hearty soup. You must try the chicken dumpling, the jambalaya and the beef chili beans soup. All chunky, meaty and flavorful. They offer veggie options as well. For desert just grab some creamy delicious raisins rice pudding. Cant go wrong with that!
Went there around dinner time for a sandwich at the deli -- many ingredients (key ingredients) were gone, probably not replenished after the lunch rush. I had an italian sandwich on stale bread with jalapenos instead of red peppers...I could tell the guy felt bad when he handed the sandwich, but they were happy to take my 10$ for it. Might be fine as a grocery store, but for takeout after lunchtime I wouldnt expect much.
For the 6th time, ive had to pour out a guart of sour milk I bought two days after I bought it. I can see having this happen once or twice, but this is too much.I brought two back. One checkout woman said I needed my receipt; another told me it was my fault at not looking at the expiration date although the milk was bought prior to that date. I gave up.The milk price is higher than its competitors. I expected a better product as well as better service.I will still go to the store, but Im staying away from any refrigerated item.
Following dental work, I once bought mashed potatoes and split pea soup, among other things. Well, the mashed potatoes were lumpy and the split peas in the soup not fully cooked. Given GGs exorbitant prices and the simplicity of preparing these gourmet dishes, this was shameless. Moreover, they would not make good on this purchase. Sine they are close to where I live, this is a lose-lose situation.

2022-05-16I dont live in this neighborhood but I would shop here regularly if I did. The selection of prepared foods and grocery items is excellent. Everything seems to be of very good quality and the prices are reasonable -- much more so than the stores that cater to my fellow tourists just a few blocks away in any given direction. I should also mention that its clean, well lit and pleasant in just about every regard thats desirable in a store.

2022-07-13Very limited selection of items. If you are looking for non-organic goods, they don’t carry them. Instead they carry all higher priced organic items. Prices in general are fairly outrageous compared to other nearby grocers. I only go in here when in a pinch because of its proximity to home, but I have to close my eyes when I get to the cash register. Very clean and staff is friendly.

2022-07-17Beware: expired goods all overI have been living in the neighborhood for two years and was a frequent customer. today (7/17) I bought Nosa yogurt and when I opened it it was watery so I checked the expiry date, which was 06/28! So i went back to the store to replace it. there were multiple other yogurts with the same expiry date - i found one with 7/31 ..i told the counter - appeared like they dont really cared. they did not even apologize and when I informed themabout the other expired products they simple said: we will let them (who???) know.It seems like they try to generate more money out of their already expensive prices ... I am really very disappointed - services are going downhill everywhere in this city ...

2022-05-03Ok quality products for mostly exorbitant prices, (probably because of the location near Lincoln Center.) Small but stocked with a decent amount of diverse grocery items. Good organic section.

2022-01-25Whats with not giving bags?? I am happy to pay for a bag but they hide bags away and wont give you one when you ask and give huge attitude if you ask for one. Why do I have to unpack my entire trolley before getting a bag? Very rude staff as well. Not to mention they come over in a huff and smash things on your checkout screen to make sure you pay for such bags. Sheesh.

2022-02-07I bought a salmon sandwich here this afternoon that was marked good until 2/8/22. Today is 2/6/22 and the bread on which the salmon was served was stale and dry. About a half hour after I consumed this concoction, I had serious intestinal problems.

2022-01-18Great food, but the workers there usually give me an attitude every time I go there. They’re being paid to stand around, ignore customers & act bothered if you ask for any assistance. This place would be 5 stars if they replaced half their staff

2021-10-15One of the great places for lunch many different soups a great variety of foods that are well prepared. Theyre fried Chicken is delicious and for six bucks for four pieces you cant go wrong. Nice sushi. Meats great hot bar salad bar. Sometimes when the students from the local school across the street are there for lunch it can get super crowded but other than that its well run its clean and a great place to go.

2022-05-19The customer service over the phones is terrible, I called in the morning and asked if they still had sushi before I made a trip over there and the lady over the phone was being lazy and told me “whatever’s there is there!”. So rude! I was so irritated.

2021-08-30Ever since they switched to self checkout this place just makes you feel bad very time you’re there. They won’t let you bag your items while you check out, make you do double the work moving your items from side to side because they are so worried someone would steal their precious 5 cent bag after paying $50-$100 for just a couple of items (they are crazy expensive which is what you’d expect for the lack of competition here)When you are ready to bag you have to go and ask for bags which are kept under lock and key with the Vice President of bagging who will ask you to commit to the number of bags and pay before you start bagging so no room for error there, you better be on point with your bag calculations.Just increase the price of milk by 5 cents and free us of this bagging nightmare!
