It gets crowded. As in can hardly walk through the bikes and people crowded. But there is a lot to see and do here. Nice parks, hammocks, food, gardens, the skyline and landmarks. A good spot to spend a day, but Id suggest taking a picnic rather than eating there. There are places to rent bikes if you dont want to walk around and most things are pretty well signed, so dont worry about getting lost.
This place is your gateway to the magical Governors Island! 🏝️ Ferries ⛴️ depart every 40 mins and tickets are free for NYCID card holders and senior citizens. Get tickets in advance on the Governors Island website to skip the line. The ferry also provides a quick and easy ride to the island with spectacular views of NYC skyscrapers 🏙️, Staten Island, Lady Library, and more. I wish it departed more often!
They dont allow electrical scooters, even though bikes and strollers are allowed. We have electrical buses, electrical scateboards, electrical cars, yet the ferry service hasnt caught up with the times. This is a big negative for me as an environmentally conscious traveler.
Appropriate distance away from the hustle and bustle of city. Relaxing place for New Yorkers. So much activities. You can go for biking the whole day and they have zipline too plus they just added glamping during summer. $3 ferry ticket going to the island is so worth it.
There is no fee for the ferry trips before noon on the weekends. Service was on time and the staff was friendly. The trip to the island really takes no time at all. The ferry spends more time turning around than they actual do crossing the water. Comfortable seating on the lower deck with a gorgeous cityscape view on the upper deck.
You must go here!! Looking for a change but can go to far? This is the place! Number one you get a ferry ride which is so relaxing! If it gets to hot in the summer there is an indoor air conditioning Indoor seating area!!! Second you’ll have the best time governors island!!! I highly recommended going!!!
Ferry is undependable; the island is brilliant! In my experience:(A) the views on the southern end are the best(B) Taco Vista is delicious, tip well!(C) The boats are only even roughly on time 28% of the time.(D) it’s the perfect place for a relaxed New York experience
Incompetent staff allow people to cut the line getting in the return ferry. During busy hours, this forces people who were actually in the line to miss the boat due to overcapacity and wait an additional 30 minutes to an hour for the next ferry. Security and staff refuse to do anything about the line cutters and instead argue and get aggressive with those in the line when they complain.
ITS SUCH A SHAME THAT WHILE WALKING IN THE LINE TO GO ON THE BOAT I FELL DOWN AND RIP MY JEANS WITH BRUISES MY KNEES AND HANDS. MY KNEES IS SWOLLEN AND IN PAIN RIGHT NOW I CANT WALK MUCH OR SLEEP BECAUSE OF THE PAIN. THE REASON I FELL IS BECAUSE THERE WERE HOSE PIPES ON THE GROUND WHERE PEOPLE HAVE TO LINE UP AND WALK AS I DIDNT SEE IT. I FELT EMBARRASSED WHEN I FELL HARD ON THE GROUND. WHEN I ASKED TO SPEAK TO A SUPERVISOR OR MANAGER NO ONES KNOWS WHERE IS THE MANAGER AS I COMPLAINED ABOUT THE HOSE ARE AT A DANGEROUS PLACE AND IT NEED TO BE MOVE BUT THE STAFF CONTINUED TO IGNORED ME. THEY SHOW NO COMPASSION AND NEVER ASKED IF I AM OKAY. THEY TREATED AS IF I AM A LIER. SHAME ON THE STAFFS
There are lot of activities here on the island and for almost all the age group. Go as a large group to enjoy your time here away from the city. Can be reached by taking a ferry from Manhattan or Brooklyn. Will be closed during the cold season. Not many food options, so make sure to take your own food. Number of trams roam around the island which will drop you at any point of your interest.
Governors island is a gem for tourists and locals alike. Climb the hills to take in amazing views of the harbor, the city and the statue, play on the slides, and then relax in the hammock garden. Its a really good idea to bring or rent bikes so you can really take in the whole island in a reasonable amount of time.
A great place for a day out with family and/or friends. If you want to ride a bike around one of the best scenic views of the east coast, peddle yourself downtown. You can enjoy the contrast of a state park and view NYC looming just a boat ride away. On a hot day you can bring or buy your meal and sit under a tree while enjoying a cool breeze from NYCs harbor. It usually has a lot less people than Central Park. The only bad thing is no dogs allowed.

2022-02-28Bare bones ferry that takes you back and forth from the ferry terminal to Governors Island. When we went in February 2022, almost nobody was inside the ferry with us as almost everyone had dogs with them. If you have a dog with you, you have to ride outside on the bottom floor. Im assuming this is because if a dog is going to make a mess, better that it happens outside where it can easily be hosed off.Ferry ride is only a few bucks and takes less than 15 minutes to get to the island.Easy. No complaints. Met expectations.

On the i$land, everything i$ too expensive and not worth it!.And I ONLY mean the food! Great place for a picnic with friends, or just to get away for the day. Hope this helps!

2022-06-06A five minutes ride from the Staten Island Ferry terminal. The ride is free, the boat leaves every half an hour. A great place fir a quick getaway from the city. You can book a place for glamping or just have a morning hike and spend the rest of the day at the spa.

2021-10-01The Governors Island Ferry terminal is located at 10 South Street, Slip 7, New York, NY. The ferry hours are Monday thru Friday from 10:00 am to 4:40 pm from Manhattan and returning from 10:20 am to 6:20 pm from Governors Island, every 40 minutes. On Saturday and Sunday the return from the island is extended to 7:00 pm. It’s a comfortable 15 minute ride. The crew is friendly.

2018-07-01Departure / landing terminal for the main ferry from Manhattan to Governors Island. The ferry itself is very short, cant be more than 5 or 10 minutes. 2 or 3 deck levels to choose from, and the view of the lower Manhattan skyline as the ferry sets out is amazing. The lines here are really long, though, so come early!

2021-11-21Historic! Governors Island Ferry!!! If you have ever been on the Staten Island Ferry (which is huge)...the Governors Island Ferry is sure to please. The upper deck provides insane views of Manhattan, Brooklyn Bridge, and Statue of Liberty! Its RIGHT NEXT DOOR TO THE Staten Island Ferry. The bus stops right across the street - and the 6 train is also near by. As I come from the LOWER EAST SIDE - its just quickest to hop on the bus. Tickets are cheap and if you have an NYID pass - they are free. also free before noon, but check the website to sign up. Since covid, everything is different, so rides were limited, and you had to logon to the website and reserve your seat on the ferry. anyway, if you are going to gov island - its the best way to get there. im not sure there is any other way :-)
