Grocery shopping should not be stressful, unfortunately not at Gristedes. With my first experience shopping there, I had a really bad experience. The cashier at the checkout counter is extremely rude. Just to give you the scenario, after waiting in line, someone cuts in. I try to point out I was there first, but she jumped into our conversation and told me to go to another counter (with a a bit of raised voice). I did as she told me even if I thought it was rude. After I finished paying, I went to her and explained that she should have not said that at least not in that kind of manner. Instead of trying to explain her side, she became extremely defensive. Finally, I had to go to the manager, whom I think is professional. I don’t want anyone to have a similar experience.
The prices here are disturbing. $8 for mayo that you can get down the block at target for $4. Bags of lettuce for $5+. Everything is mocked up for 50 - 100% more then other places. Don’t buy anything from here unless you absolutely need to. Go get your food delivered from amazon fresh or anywhere else but here.

On the positive +Clean, organized and friendly staff. On the negative - lack of bargains very small produce and vegetables selection and the deli area does not reflect cleanliness or good service.

Staff is nice, store is relatively clean but the prices are stupid high. They are right across from my apt so I go there when I need to since 1991. One thing Ive learned over that time is not to buy anything from their deli as its never fresh or well made. Every so often I would try something from the deli only to have to throw it out.Today I re-affirmed that lesson when I made the mistake of buying some of their pre-made tuna salad that comes in a plastic container- it was full of cheap mayonnaise and had an acrid taste that my stomach is still grumbling about 2 hours later. Youd think over 25 years Id have learned my lesson.
I usually dont like shopping at gristedes, but this location is different than the other ones I tried. Very clean store and polite staff.

Pros: Staff is helpful and extremely friendly.Cons: Expensive, even by Midtown East standards! Also, limited produce section and what is available is pricey.Walk the extra few blocks to Fairway Market.

There is something about this place that makes me feel at home. Yes the prices are high, the isles are small and they dont have the fresh food of their competitors but I like the people and wouldnt go anywhere else for the quick run for staples.
I went to this store for the first time and I felt so welcome , staff are so helpful lovely cashier ( Wilda) shes such a sweetheart , the only downside is that the groceries are very pricey. But I will go back😊

Wow.... I just moved into the neighborhood and I have to say, Im not impressed with this store. I literally saw at least two types of produce that showed a noticable amount of mold. I am going to try the Dagostinos instead

Gristedes is great on Tuesdays because all students and seniors get a 10% off. The workers are helpful and kind.

2019-08-16This is THE most expensive place I’ve ever been. Look!? $5.49 for a small box of salad. Whoever dreamed up this joint...I bow down to you, you know capitalism better than anyone. Congratulations (ish)That baby spinach or rocket (arugula) is worth less than 1 cent.Needless to say I spent $95 on some pasta, cheese, garlic etc. No wonder everyone eats out in this town. I love it BUT this can’t be right.Mostly

2019-03-29Staff is great. Register clerks are always friendly. In general the store could use a facelift. They did some work to update it, but in no way is it a modern grocery store. Prices are often more expensive on trivial items than buying from their competitors/drug stores etc., but thats the price for convenience I suppose.Overall experience is good and most items I want are available. Good local grocery store thats usually stocked with the items I need.Store is clean and well maintained.

2019-07-08This is an exceedingly convenient market. Pleanty of variety stuffed into it. Given the location, the prices are very reasonable here. Ive only seen fresh produce here. Shelves are stocked neatly and well organized. All staff Ive interacted with are helpful and friendly. I would certainly recommend!

2019-11-20From the Dept of State:Stores that provide plastic bags to customers must accept the same type of bag for recycling or reuse.This Gristedes told me the blue plastic recycling bin at the entrance was to recycle plastic bags, but this is mixed with other recyclables, which is prohibited, and also lined with a black trash bag like its being thrown away. Our environment and community recycling efforts are important. I will be reporting this location for improper recycling. I hope you take proper steps to fix this asap.
