Grit in other cities:
This place has a good vibes and great potential. The potential lies in the menu and with perfection this joint can become an instant classic. As of now, the food at some moments truly excited me while other times the flavors and options felt uninspired and just fell flat.Tbh for such a place I would expect more out of the box dishes like Beef Bacon Stuffed Medjool Dates, and Stuffed Cabbage and less of the popcorn chicken which was too sweet and reminded me of the poppers from Mikes Burgers in Five Towns.House cocktails were interesting but can use some tweaking, I didnt try the beer and perhaps that where this establishment shines - it truly has a rather robust offering of beerOverall I would love to come back but I think there is lot of work to be done if this joint is to become a timeless classic.
Nice outdoor seating. Not well heated. With todays policy abt covid 19 outdoor seating and heating I can see how restauranteurs are struggling. However, the food. The menu is nothing more than just a meat mish mash. The beet salad was not fresh, whatever dressing they had smelled moldy. The beef dumplings were terrible! Very oily from frying the filling was fatty and just not tasty. Their signature burger was cold and fell apart as soon I picked it up.
New local beer garden and restaurant. We were seated in the outdoor area which was accompanied by great music and a relaxed atmosphere. Service was good, especially for a holiday weekend after their initial opening. Good beer selection and a nice variety of cocktails including beer cocktails such as the Southern 75 which had bourbon within an IPA. We had a fresh heirloom tomato salad, priced reasonably. Would recommend the B. Russell cocktail and Nightshine Dark Lager.
The food & service was great. I got beef brisket, which was cooked nice & tender & juicy with fresh herbs on top & mashed potatoes on the side. It was really good, with a good sized portion. He got duck which he really enjoyed as well.We got the chocolate ruglach with marshmallows to share for dessert & we were both perfectly full. Its was delicious, warm, chewy & goey. All of the staff were very nice & courteous & even recommended the duck over the more experience veal.
I could go on all day about this place, about how rude the staff are, how small, expensive and overcooked the portions are, how disgusting the bathroom is, and how empty the place is on your average Thursday night but whats the point its not like theyre gonna take this review seriously and make a change for the better theyll just respond and deny everything then offer me a free meal to change my rating like they always do🙁
I understand that they just opened but this will be as a way to improve:The restaurant is well made a separate indoor and outdoor area, the indoor is very modern and the outdoor is more friendly with simple outdoor chairs and tables. We arrived when it was still empty and paid attention that there was lots of staff but then it became crowded very fast. The staff was very nice and the waiter was able to give good recommendations, we didnt have to wait too long for our order to come. When we wanted to order more and it was already crowded, it was impossible to ask anything from anyone, we had to ask 3 times for the same request until we got it and it took 30 minutes!Overall the dish are well made and very tasty but they come as very small portions. The breaded beef is about 2 oz with a big salad, and the chicken liver is only if you really love liver. The Hoisin steak is delicious and a must. They have delicious beer cocktail.Expect to spend $200 for 2 for food and drink.I will recommend it for a bar experience with some appetizers rather than a restaurant experience.
Great food !!!! Great service !!!!!!!Ask for Michoel !This above is review is from the previous time we came (mid-December time)We went back for dinner the other night - It was even better !!! If I could give gruit another 5 star review I would ! Also, shout out to Michoel for taking such good care of us, for the 2nd time!!!!
I very rarely write reviews but this was really such a disappointing experience. My family came in from Europe and were tired and hungry so we decided to give this place a try. We got there at 5:30 and we waited and waited and kept asking where our food was since it was by that time almost 7 and we still hadn’t been served our food. Finally I walked over to someone who seemed like the manager and I told him that we had been there since 5:30 and was served nothing but French fries. He seemed really embarrassed and tried to make it right by making our food get out faster. But by the time we were served the food was cold, the portions were tiny! We paid over 50 dollars for an appetizer sized portion of short ribs. We were so confused we even asked if they gave us the right thing. The food was underwhelming all around same with the drinks. The manager offered us free desert and a round of drinks to make it right but we were all so tired and so disappointed by the food that we didn’t even really take advantage of it and still walked out with a bill of almost 300 dollars. Truly disappointed about another crown heights restaurant trying to be trendy and charging unfair prices for underwhelming food.
The outdoor dining was a wonderful experience beautiful set up very airy and roomy. The food came out exceptionally quick and was delicious and a very different experience than your standard restaurant so many wonderful flavours and uniqueness in every dish at a reasonable price. I highly recommend checking it out.
The food was really good!!I got Fried Rice which includes beef bacon and a sunny side up. The food tasted fine, but it tasted like they used soup base or flavor enhancer (ie MSG) in it, either that or it was too salty. Also got a BLT which was 5/5 (perfect) and fries which were pretty good. I split the mousse brownie dessert option with a friend; was not impressed with it... Overall, great experience! Would go back.
Good food and friendly staff. Came at 11 p.m. There was live music in the beer garden but I prefer the quieter air conditioned indoors. At that hour the food service was small plate which is more to my liking in this kind of venue. The burger was outstanding. The chili was a little too spicy for my liking. Overall, a pleasant experience
A nice place for drinks. The menu is good and the prices are ok.Their soft pretzel with their mustard is amazing and a must have. The burger we ordered was served raw but they gave us another one when we showed it to them. They were understaffed, but the staff covered for each other, and the service was good. The outside is designed and decorated very nicely. The lighting is good, the colors are cool, and the vibe is chill.Overall, I think they have potential and hope everyone gives them a chance. I would definitely stop by next time Im in the area.
The food here was fantastic! We started with the Chicken Liver Crock, and the only problem with it was that I didnt have more. The sourdough bread really complimented it, and while I didnt have any, my wife assured me that the plums pulled everything together. The Hasselback Kielbasa was the weak link in our meal. It was decent, but not mind blowing. It tasted pretty standard (adding mustard made a big difference), but the chicken skin crumble was a nice touch. We each got a House Burger, and agreed that it was hands down the juiciest burger we had ever had. The bacon jam was so good that I was poking around my plate trying to find every last bit of it.Service was decent; one of our dishes disappeared for a while, but we got it eventually. Some of the staff members had some trouble figuring out which table ordered what food, but I chalked that up to being relatively new.Thats why I took off one star, but I hope to go back again, and look forward to giving Gruit a full 5 stars.
The service was great. Servers very nice. Manager was very competent, took care of our problems we had with the food. So for that I give one star.Whats most important to me in a restaurant is the food. Duh. The food was horrendous. Not joking. Everything bad or blahs. Add some salt and we were literally served a dessert straight out of the freezer! Will not be back
I ordered the Empire Blvd cocktail and it was way too sweet, it tasted like liquid candy, the blackberry puree completely overpowered the tart flavor of lime and lemon juice and the aroma of the basil and elder flower. It took 20 minutes once we got our drinks before a server offered to take our food orders. Meanwhile our neighbors sitting next to us had been waiting over an hour for their food, when they complained about the lack of service they received an appeasing plate of appetizer fries. Shortly after, the manager poured them what appeared to be complimentary shots in a friendly manner. Fifteen minutes after my sister ordered a sangria they came back saying they dont have it. The Beef Bacon Stuffed Medjool Dates were good but the dates overpowered the meat. As they finally started serving us, we were let known that they were sold out of one of the dishes ordered. No comment on the Caesar salad, it looked mediocre. I ordered for myself the Stuffed Cabbage and enjoyed the turnip puree and tomato marmalade which it was served with. I was told that the burgers were great though the side salad was drowning in salt. The hoisin bbq wings were so bad that more than half the dish was returned to the kitchen and the manager took it off our bill. For desert we shared the Praline bar which was too sweet while the cake was too dry. When I got the bill I felt as if I was paying for a kosher meal as opposed to a good meal.
Ok. So I wasn’t going to come here because of the one star review. 🤷🏼♂️And I amSo happy I ignored it. The vibe is great. It’s a combination of throwback and good feelings. Everyone was just happy. The staff was so friendly and fun. They gave us shots and gave us ideas of what to do around there. And the food was dee-licious. Really good portion sizes. I mean like really good. We were full after the appetizers. We got the chicken fingers, fries and burger. 5 stars on everything. And everything was made when we ordered. Not before hand. So super fresh. We got the s’mores rugelach dessert. It was too sweet for me. Overall a 5 star experience. Would definitely return. 🥳
Atmosphere, location and staff are enjoyable.Prices are insane for the service you’re getting. If they lowered their item prices by $5 i would definitely recommend. To mention some of the issues:Food was either over or under spiced, and most the stuff I received seemed old (dark brown avocado, dried out lemon etc.)Menu needs major work, most items on menu are not clearly spelt out for the average consumer.
The only reason I gave 5 stars is because there wasnt an option for 6 stars!! Was at the gruit tonight 4th night of hannuka had the greatest experience I had in a long time! For starters the food was delicious (much better from what I read and saw online/social media) waiters were polite, professional and nice. We had a little confusion with our others and the waiter mistakenly ordered us two steak mains when we only ordered one. The manager came right out and asked us what the issue was and acted very professional took care of the situation like a pro. Customer service was at its finest!!!!
The food is truly excellent and for New York, is a great deal when it comes to portions and pricing. The service is still figuring some things out but the menu more than makes up for it. Must haves include the chicken confit spatzle and the beef cheek terrine. The chef is clearly talented and Im looking forward to going back!
Went to this place with an open mind. When I came in they said no waiter service available at the time. That was the first thing they said- so when I get my bill why is there a service charge?Spoke to the manager and no help- its policyAll the food tasted like salt. Honestly, no point in coming here. Nothing special.
Last night I took 3 of my daughters to Gruit to celebrate a birthday. We were all very disappointed in the food. The heirloom tomato salad was quite small and very expensive. The fish and chips dish was not worth the price we paid. The alcoholic beverage was so watered down and tasteless that we had to give it back.
Drinks were nice try the muleWe started with the Pretzel it was very goodFries were typical truffle friesStuffed cabbage was really good even though we couldnt find the meat, I would still order it againSkirt steak was very salty just the way it should beFor dessert we had sorbet, standard fareAnd coffee mooseWas a little too rich for our tasteBut very goodGreat atmosphereRelaxed environmentGood chill spotDefinitely coming back

2021-08-24We sat outside. It was very hot. Service was just terrible. A waiter actually ignored us several times. The food was not good whatsoever. The meat pizza was flavorless and dull. The prices were high and we were mischarged. Finding parking was impossible. In short, if it was good it would be worth the effort and price . But it just isn’t.

2021-05-25Phenomenal restaurant. A true culinary experience. All dishes cannot be made at home. A real creative and unique menu. Incredible drinks too. Only small critique is that some dishes are just a drop too salty. I felt the need to constantly have my water filled. Lol the everything bagel chicken tenders are delicious but just a drop too salty. Same goes for for the french fries. But other than that, a perfect night. Cant wait to return again. Keep it up. :) P.S - I do think they can improve their main dishes. Im hesitant to get them due to poor experiences previously so I usually end up just ordering a bunch of appetizers instead which are really awesome.

From the beef bacon, and faccocia appetizers, to the soup, and main dishes, each with its unique bursts of delectable flavors..... you have got to go try it to see it for yourselves! 5 star+ for sure!

2019-11-12Food, service and price for food were original and outstanding! Vibe was also cool. Deserts were underwhelming with an overwhelming price (which cost the fifth star) Deserts were not on menu , didnt think I would have to ask waitresses how much they are (sounds cheap if youre taking someone out for dinner) I ordered 2 desserts, thinking at most $13-15 was shocked by $21 price per dessert when bill came. After licking our plates clean and raving how good food and experience was, we couldnt even bring ourselves to take more than a few bites of dessert and we are not picky eaters ... Would highly recommend this place, Just dont be embarrassed to ask prices for anything not on the menu and skip dessert...
