The waitress had a horrible attitude, when my breakfast arrived she piled butter packets and syrup canisters ON TOP OF my food. Has she never heard of cross contamination??? I don’t know where anything like that has been, and when i asked her to take it back she said “well you should have said not to do that” i have to tell her not to contaminate my food???! What is wrong with these people
First time we got there for breakfast !After we had read positive comments about that place, my wife and I decided to give a try !After waiting a longtime, we had the visit of a waitress. We looked at the menu, and we did not find any complete breakfast. One egg with toasts 4.95$One egg with toasts and homefries 6.95 $Add meat 3.00$Add a coffee 2.95 $total of 12.95$ for only one egg, toasts and frozen potatoes, you get homefries or a patty of potatoes like McDo.Raw bacons in my wife wrap, a wrap in that place costs around 7.00$ egg, a little bit of cheese and raw bacons.First and last time, Plattsburgh has plenty others good restaurants for their people !
We tried this place for the first time and did pick up. We ordered buffalo chicken sandwich ( without the blue cheese), asked for no blue cheese. We also ordered two chocolate chips pancakes and a fry sea food plater ( haddock, garlic herb shrimp and buffalo shrimp). When going there it took a while for anyone to even greet let alone help cash out my meal. The meal we got was not what we asked for. There blue cheese on the sandwich, the pancakes where plan. Over all the food was ok. Portion was average. Will I go back? Probably not.
Love this place! Stop every time Im anywhere near. Even Burlington. Great Michigan dogs! Fresh cut french fries. Amazing chocolate shake! Great service. And the entrance to the Northway is across the street. Never had anything to complain about here in the last 10 years!
I ordered a Philly cheese steak, when I got my order it had burnt cheese all underneath all the meat burnt and I mean burnt cheese. You could literally take this huge piece of cheese off. I complained and delt with it bc I was heading back to VT. The cook came over where I was sitting and I slide the burnt cheese on the plate right to him, and said you want this..Then we ordered 2 michagan dogs ( my boyfriend was so excited to go there bc 2 years ago it WAS GREAT)they sucked. You couldnt even taste anything but hot dog.. Then we got such small amounts bc we asked for our meal that we ate there to be put in a to go box. Wow I didnt realize how much of a difference in the amount and quality you get.
Ok so I was pleasantly surprised. I didnt know that they did breakfast and I ordered two eggs over medium two white toast with home fries and coffee. I have to say that was by far the best restaurant breakfast I have had in a long time. So much better then The Hungry Bear or Pennys ever thought of serving. Gus Red Hots has my vote for breakfast and lunch now I have to go in and try something from their dinner that I havent had before. Thanks guys for the best breakfast and Kayla you service was wonderful
Very limited menu. We thought it would be traditional diner style with variety but basically is a burger and breakfast place. We had burgers and they were unremarkable, nothing special. Service was average to good. Perhaps they are better known for their breakfast. They need to expand their menu, at least to add some salad meals and perhaps daily special dinner entrees other than burgers.
So glad to have Gus open again. This place is an old time landmark. So happy the new owners didnt change any of the good stuff, but did make a lot of improvements. The outdoor seating deck is great. The food is very good and reasonably priced. The service is also very good. I was a waitress at Gus in the late sixties. It was like a trip down memory lane. I could almost see Gus standing in his favorite spot keeping his eye on everything! Thanks for bringing it back.
Established in 1951, Gus is a Plattsburgh staple and one of the more famous michigan joints in Plattsburgh. While their Michigan are what Gus is famous for, they also offer plenty of other tasty options.Among which is their reuben sandwiches and pouting. Dining in is highly recommended as you can feel the history when you walk through the door and the friendly wait staff are ready to welcome you in.They recently added pizza to their menu and just like everything on their menu it is very good.If you are visiting Plattsburgh definitely stop in.
Went today with my family sat at the bar and had zero problems waiting for food or even the food. The sauce was on the dryer side which everyone likes there sauce different. The customer service on the other hand is what really bothered my entire family was the owner roberts reaction to a customer issue where there was a problem with the order. The owner did not wait to go into the kitchen before he started swearing loud enough for us and probably the older gentleman who’s order was messed up to be out of earshot. Extremely disrespectful and disappointing as this restaurant used to be family oriented and so friendly when was Carl was running it. My father even stepped up and told the owner that’s his actions were completely uncalled for which they were. The poor waitress apologized to us which his actions are not her fault. We didn’t even bother to finish our meals we paid and left. It’s sad to see what once was a good restaurant go up in smoke because of a owner who can’t keep his composure until he gets to the kitchen. I understand the reopening and the amount of costumers have been crazy but the owners actions today were completely unacceptable. 0/10
Completely remodeled inside & out, just in time for the 21 ADK summer. I recently placed a breakfast order on my way home, picked it up, drove home while being ready to enjoy my eggs & home fries only to find out my 2 over lightly eggs were over done. I called to tell them in the future what over lightly eggs were to me and ask what I should say the next time I order so my eggs are the way I like & the wait staff gave the phone to the owner Janelle, who immediately apologized and said she would replace them. Nice diner styled restaurant known for their Michigan style hot dogs. Service was very good. So good two servers came to our table to take our order, lol. I had their Michigan burger which was very good. The child sized chicken fingers was a generous 4 pieces with fries. The poutines were a bit skimpy portion and curds. Other than that I would recommend stopping here.
Location, location and location. If you are heading to the Adirondacks via the ferry to Plattsburgh you will drive right by this place. If you like hot dogs then you can stop here for Plattsburghs signature hot dog, the Michigan. My wife does not particularly like hot dogs so Guss works for both of us because they have a complete menu of diner fare. She likes their Reuben sandwich. So, convenient, inexpensive, good food. Whats not to like?
Food was good for most of our party. However, my eggs were awful. It was as if they just scraped someones leftover eggs onto my plate and called those my two scrambled eggs. They were part burned and part runny. So gross. Service was friendly but incredibly slow compared to other customers who arrived after us.
If you like the standard greasy diner style food, then youll probably like what is served. Not saying that in a bad way, because I personally like that kind of food, but this is not the place to go for an upscale dining experience.I grew up in the area in the 60s and 70s, so I might be a bit biased when I say I love the atmosphere of this place. It has a homey feel.Service is usually just fine, but occasionally when busy it can be slow. The food is fairly standard diner fair. I think the prices are a **little** high, but Ill make allowances due to the crazy circumstances in the last year and the expense involved reopening this place. It seems the new menu has been trimmed down a little, but still maintains all the old favorites. Overall the place looks and runs just like it did before it closed, which is nice. Cosmetically, very little has changed inside. However, the new owners have added a nice outdoor seating area as well as freshly paved the parking lot and spruced it up and I think it looks nicer than it ever has from the road.As for the michigans (red hots), it really depends on what type of michigan you like. If you like the standard michigan which is served at places like Clare & Carls, Michigans Plus, McSweeneys or Nitzis then youll like these michigans because in my opinion they all taste about the same. These michigans are much more chili powder based and have a mushier consistency. I personally prefer a sweeter, meatier style of sauce such as the type served at Ronnies. But to each their own.The poutine was not half bad and was more authentic than youll find at most places as it used real cheese curds. However, it really should have more gravy and the gravy itself needs a heartier flavor.Im hoping this year they continue the tradition with their perch dinner, because it was absolutely the best in the area.So overall when Im in the mood for a hometown atmosphere and greasy diner food, or its 5:00 p.m. and I feel like eating breakfast, this is where I usually go and Im rarely disappointed. Its so nice to have this place reopened and operating like usual.
If I could give zero stars, I would. We had decided to go to Gus for dinner tonight and see how much it had changed under the new ownership and support local business. I must say, Im not impressed. When we walked in, we were told we could seat ourselves and somebody would be with us in just a minute. This was the only acknowledgment that we even existed. We sat for over ten minutes waiting for a waitress. During this time we watched the waitstaff at the counter messing around and chitchatting. Id also like to mention the fact that it was about sixty degrees outside and they had the air conditioner turned basically as low as it could go. During this ten minutes we froze. Eventually we decided that they obviously didnt want our business and left. Im quite disappointed and probably wont be returning.Edit: I also posted a comment on their Facebook page. Today when I checked to see if anybody had gotten back to me, I discovered they removed the post. Glad to see that they have no customer service skills. I certainly wont be returning and I recommend you dont even waste your time. There are multiple other home-style restaurants in the Plattsburgh/ West Chazy area that have amazing food and actually care about their customers satisfaction. Obviously all of the positive feedback/comments on Facebook only exist because they remove negative comments. Seriously, dont bother wasting your time.
I was so happy when my 4 year old daughter picked Gus Red Hots for her special lunch after her Pre-K Graduation!!! I was so sad when they closed down...and was soooooo happy to see that when they reopened they reopened tenfold! I love and always will love the Original Gus Red Hots, but it has another new place in my heart for sure!!!❤️
My food was good. I had the Reuben, but on wheat. It was good, the corned beef was very good. The French fries were good. Crispy and delicious, especially with the ketchup. But my favorite fries are the late crinkle-cut. The waitress was very good. I would give it a try if you havent been there.
The place reminded me of back then movies, where the local kids would go to get shakes, very cute and comfortable. Absolutely loved, loved LOVED the service here! And great food! It really hit the spot when I found out the mashed potatoes are HOMEMADE! And, if you visit... Have one of their Maple shakes, they are to die for! Definitely recommend to anyone looking for a nice hot meal and amazing customer service! Keep up the great work, guys!
Ive been eating here since the early 1980s when I was a little guy. I live in New Jersey now and I will still drive up here to get Michigans. The food is fantastic! A New England institution! If they sold the sauce over the internet, I would buy it weekly. Last time I was up there, I bought an entire cooler full of pints and gave them out to the family as gifts. Seriously, give it a try. Its a piece of local history.
The staff is always friendly and attentive to your needs. The food is very good and reasonably priced. It creates a small town feel to an ever growing community. This is exactly the type of restaurant that I hope never disappears from America. I rate it a 10 plus for the atmosphere, look and charm of American Dining.
Decor was inviting and warm. Lots of neat pictures and license plates from all states. Service was with a smile and friendly. Our waitress forgot my soup as an appetizer. But in the end the soup was a delicious tomato. The sirloin special with gravy was also very good and homemade. It could be hotter ad mine was warm . Deffinantely will return.
Pleasantly surprised. Ive driven by so many times when visiting Plattsburgh, but never had the time to stop in. Im so glad I finally did! Wonderful menu with great variety. The Michigan was excellent as well as the wings, patty melt, and philly cheese steak. Staff was friendly and Gus has a warm atmosphere. Perfect place for good food at a reasonable price. Will be going back often.👍
Cheap, quick, just off the ferry if youve come over from Vermont. I thought it was cool that they serve perch from Lake Champlain. Nothing that exciting in terms of quality or freshness of ingredients - its a diner and they serve diner food. Im a little spoiled by some of the options we have on the VT side of the lake, but I also think there is a place for cheap diner fare and I see no reason to deduct them any points as a result. If youre looking to spend very little and get in and out in a hurry, this is a great option - if youre looking for a memorable meal that will keep you coming back, you need to do a better job managing your own expectations.
If youre in the mood for a classic diner, definitely stop into Gus. We had stopped in on the way to upstate NY and loved that the decor included local history and old timey photos of the area throughout the last century. Our waitress, Abby, was wonderful. She was attentive and let us know about price breaks via the specials for the morning. Also, if you ask any of the local diners about different activities to do locally, theyll give you the inside scoop! Next time were in the area, were coming back!
We ordered perch and French fry and they were over cooked and hard. I thought it was pricey at $12.95 a plate and the fountain soda at almost $3.00 a glass. The waitress did not come back to see if we wanted refills for our sodas and never came back to ask us how our food was until we were done. The place could be cleaner my arm stuck to the table while I was eating and my Mom had to scrape off a French fry that was stuck to her foot.
Diner-style with authentic history dating back to the late 1940s. Worth the stop! More than just a red hot hot dog restaurant. Eat in, take out! Convenient to ferry and state park. The Michigan dogs are the best Ive ever had! Highly recommended!!!:(but not for those on a diet! LOL!
The fish & chips was overcooked. The menu said I would be eating haddock. I got tilapia instead. The waitress is either new or has a short attention span. I asked for black tea. I got green tea. I didnt finish me meal because it was so poorly cooked and I didnt get what I ordered. Still had to pay for that disgusting food. We wont be back.
Went for perch fry. Cook told us he just served the last couple orders. We had a nice chat. Theres more local perch on the way. Fried chicken dinner and Reuben burger worked out just fine. Like my burger rare and fries extra crispy. He nailed it! We will be back. Plattsburgh landmark not to be missed. Their Michigans rock.
If I could give less then one star, I definitely would. 3 of us went there for lunch today. Took 10 minutes to get my cup of decaf, coworker ordered reg, did not get here’s. She was told the other server had taken off with the pot (there were 2 others sitting there.). I ordered the hot turkey w/mashed potatoes. When it was brought over with the Michigan fries another coworker had ordered, we asked for coffee refills. The server rolled her eyes at us and tossed the other plate on the table, so that it landed on mine... my potatoes were cold and the rest barely warm. When I said something about it. I was told she could put it in the microwave (if I wanted a microwave dinner, I would have had a TV dinner). Then they bring the other order of a Rubin sandwich, which was ordered with NO sourcrout (spelled wrong), it arrives smothered in it. This lousy meal for the tune of $50.00. We will never go back to eat there again, and advise others to eat elsewhere 😡
Clean diner in the middle of nowhere. I stumbled across this place when I crossed the border, retuning to the United States from Canada. Nothing like a good diner breakfast to welcome you home from a trip up north. I enjoyed their triple 2 plate (2 eggs, 2 pancakes, and 2 pieces of ham)
Heading to Gus on the way home from a roadtrip across the border has been a traditon thats been around for almost as long as the establishment has been open.Dont let the area or its outside appearance fool you, the inside is clean and the staff has always been inviting and friendly with the orders always coming quickly.Theres not much in the way of a true diner like Gus around my current local so I definitely appreciate and enjoy the atmosphere of Gus though some may find it a little dated. The food isnt anything too spectacular but is definitely tasty, enjoyable diner and comfort food favourites. The red hot michigans are my go-tos but everything Ive seen come out of the kitchen has always looked appetizing.Gus definitely is re-inventing the wheel in any way but its been using the same wheel it started with, so-to-speak, and it definitely isnt broken so theres no need to fix it.
The waitress was disrespectful and very bad at her job messed are order up and didnt check on us to see if everything was ok and we had to go wait ten minutes for are check at the counter well they found her and she filled out the check worse service Ive received in years
Saw their sign on the side of the road while driving back to New York from Montreal... I figured any place called GUS Red Hots has got to be good, and they definitely are!Take a pit stop here--they wont let you down! GUS has been here for since 1949.... and that says everything.
Place is an absolute trash heap. Mold covers many areas in the kitchen. Food isnt prepared to health department standards. If you complain the owners berate and belittle you and will kick you out. The perch is defrosted in the same sink as the kitchen hoods are degreased in. How people dont get food poisoning from there is beyond me, will never eat there again. Would suggest people avoid it at all costs
Gus is an indelible part of growing up in the north country. This is an old timey diner with a clean and cheerful atmosphere. The food is simple and inexpensive.Visitors should not miss the chance to order a couple Red Hots as this is one of the few places they can be had.
Very disappointing everytime you come they are temporarily closed. Website says open Mon - Sun 7:00 am to 8:00 pm. It is Monday at 12:08 they are closed with a sign new hours 7:00 - 4:00, closed on Monday. If hours keep changing and your temporarily closed, customers will stop coming.
Food is good Customer service is terrible.... Pretty sad when the Manager calls you a liar and then hangs up because of their mistake. So you know the results of how they handle complaints now when you are 300 miles away.So let me tell you what happened I went in and ordered 12 Michigans I needed 4 put together ready to eat and 8 deconstructed along with an extra jar of sauce.I left the counter not checking out the order...The waitress said youre all set babe I went out folded bag top and put it in 2 Ziploc bags so it wouldnt get mushy in cooler....So I get home to find out I was short 6 Michigans deconstructed and no onions..... I even put a tip on the bill why I dont know now.... And to boot there was an employee chiming in and laughing during my conversation with the Manager...Pretty sad when I loved that place and had great memories....
The cook was very rude to me and my family we go there as regulars and we only brought so much with us so we didnt spend alot so we was short 6 cents and the chef stopped us on our way out and said if we cant cover the whole check to never come back we definatly can afford it but bc of that he lost our money
I used to like to go to guss but after my last experience I will never go back. My wife and I went to Guss for a sandwich and drinks soda one each we ordered on turkey club sandwich two soda drinks the bill was 18.60 with tip yes you guessed it 20.00 for one club sandwich and two drinks.
Mom and I stopped in to have lunch on our way home from Vermont food was delicious as always but wait staff was horrible they treated their regulars great but not others our waitress never stopped by to see how we were I had to ask for a refill as she came to drop the check on the tabke and she rolled her eyes as if it killed her I will not be returning SMH!!!!

2021-12-26While traveling back to NY, we were passing by and decided to stop in for some Michigans because we cant get them anywhere else. My step-dad was telling me during this visit how he put the windows in while working for Adams Glass many years ago. It was a nice memory for him and we really enjoyed our meal.

2022-06-19Two local seniors and two out of town (Arizona) seniors dined for dinner. Was greeted immediately and seated at our choice of tables. Server was pleasant and taking our order reasonably fast and dinner was served without delays. All four meals were very good and the entire dining experience was great. Our quests from Arizona were very impressed with the whole atmosphere of the restaurant. Highly recommend dining here for the entire family.

2022-05-28Convenient location and overall nice spot. They are not allergy friendly if you have very bad food allergies but they try and be as accommodating as possible. They have a very large menu and the place itself is rather large. They have a take out window if you don’t want to go inside and they also have outdoor dining where you can bring your dog. The inside was relatively clean although the booth we sat at wasn’t the cleanest. The server was very nice and incredibly friendly. I ordered a fruit cup and it was a decent size but the kiwi came with the peel still on it. They had water bottles which was great. Everyone absolutely loved their food and it came out pretty quick. I would recommend this place just not specifically for gluten free/vegan options.

2022-05-20I finally visited Gus Red Hots on 5/20/22 for the first time. The waitress we had help and yet lacked that little bit you would expect, but she wasnt bad to say the least. As far as the food. My wife had tenders, fries, a salad and potato salad. I had French toast, scrambled eggs and sausage. When I tell you, Holy-moly! The food was fantastic. Minus the silverware wasnt properly cleaned, but the food made it all worth while. Im big on food and reviewing places. These minor things can be overlooked without a doubt! We will be back to try other dishes. Thank you to the staff and the cooks. Awesome job!

2022-05-08Nice place with new owners. Food was a little bland though, needs more salt and seasoning, but was hot. Didnt care for the Cole slaw either as it tasted wierd, but could just be my taste buds. Overall was ok. Ill have to try breakfast next and see how that tastes.
