Went there for birthday lunch with my daughter. Food was excellent we especially liked the smoked salmon appetizer. Schnitzel, red cabbage and potato pancakes good too. The very nice waitress heard us talking about my birthday. She brought a dish of ice cream with a candle at the end of our meal. Very enjoyable.
My wife is German from Wiesbaden Germany. We travel often and always seek to find good German Food. We were really surprised when we stopped for lunch at Guss. The food, beverage, and hospitality were wonderful. We will definitely be back and highly recommend this establishment for great German Food, great service, and very warm hospitality.
Last night a couple with two very young children came onto Gus 25 minutes late for their reservation. We honored the reservation they were seated at 6:55 pm. They ordered appetizers and dinner (we normally anticipate an hour and a half to two hours to accommodate a party of four) they received the apps and then were served salads and had received their entrees when I noticed the little girl becoming antsy. I asked the mother if the little girl needed the ladies room. The mother said no. the mother seemed out of sorts. The mother said I want to speak to a manager. I said that would be me. She then told me that they had been at the table for an hour and a half and had no service. A blatant lie. Not knowing all of the particulars I took her at her word and suggested that if she was dissatisfied she could leave an there will be no charges. They promptly left. Thereafter I found out what had actually transpired. Some people should not dine out
Cannot possibly say enough good things about this place!!!!!! My family and i were up in New York for the day from jersey and due to unfortunate circumstances we needed a place to stop for dinner: they accommodated us, a party of 10, with no problem. They helped turn an otherwise sad day around into a completely uplifting moment. The staff, the owner, the food. Everything was amazing!!! Would leave 100 stars if I could!!!
I cannot thank the staff enough for turning our familys day around. Incredible service, delicious food, and over all a wonderful time. I cannot recommend this place or the wonderful people who work there enough. Thank you thank you. Please go see for yourself how great this place is!
Food is always Great. I come here with my family of four and the staff is always nice and so is the owner. We just came here for my sisters birthday party turning 11. They were really nice to us. Eggplant Napoleon is always great and so is the pork schnitzel. Great staff, service, and food.
This is the most iconic family-owned restaurant in the Hudson Valley. Ive been dining here since a child, and have the absolute best memories to go along with it all. I do prefer this style of food during the winter months because its so comforting on a cold night. The smoked trout appetizer is perfect. For dinner entrees, I have a few favorites, but in the last few years Ive been choosing from their Regional German specials, and they will not disappoint. The meatloaf and classic turkey entree is also a winner. The interior is frozen in time, with pine walls and great lighting. Please never update the look. Its perfect just the way it is. Theres always a great beer selection, and they make a mean martini.
Out with some friends: our choices for dinner included Potato Pancake, stuff cabbage, NY Strip, Pea soup, Eggplant appetizer which all were good. No complaints here and we are planning to stop by again. Nice to find a local place for German food. Waitress was attentive and took care of us when we needed something.
Sauerbraten is always excellent. For that matter, every meal I have had here is excellent, Ive always stuck to German fare in all honesty, but Im sure every choice is excellent. Apple Strudel with amazing whipped cream and vanilla ice cream is terrific. The beer selection is excellent. I always enjoy a meal here and have also enjoy ending a ride with some excellent German libation. A great place I sincerely hope is around for another 7 decades.
I call this excellent restaurant once a month since I like the special atmosphere that is part of this place. The team is awfuly loving and qualified. The service is deeply fast. Also, the food they cook is first-rate. I visited more than once and I was always pleased. The expense is fair. I highly suggest this place to to all.
Wonderful place! Family owned and operated for 3 generations. Food is always impeccable. They serve a tasty selection of German foods that are prepared traditionally, as well as a fantastic selection of american picks. Their roast beef dinner will remind you of Mom’s homemade Sunday dinner as kid. Its the ultimate comfort food. The NY strip steak is my very favorite, always cooked to perfection, I order it with their creamy homemade mashed potatoes and fresh veggies. The shrimp cocktail is always fresh, served with a zesty homemade cocktail sauce. A couple of other must try appetizers here are the Clammer Jammers and the Eggplant Napoleon, both are amazing. This is one place where you do not want to skip the bread. It is a signature of Gus’s. They make their own rye bread, fresh sliced for each table and its out of this world. Something else worth mentioning, most of the servers have been working here for years and years and years. Im talking like 10, 20 years. I feel that is a credit to the lovely dedicated family that owns this restaurant. Family is always on hand and very friendly. Many recipes are old family recipes that they take great pride in serving. My family has been going here since the 60s. Nowadays my husband and I rarely go anywhere else. Why would we? Great food, great service, great prices and if I am going to spend my money going out somewhere, I am happy to give it to a family that really cares about their business, employees and their customers being happy.
Disappointing. Always wanted to check the place out, so we went for lunch today. They had a lunch menu with a separate Specials menu which showed the Schnitzel and the Hungarian Goulash as specials for a reduced price. Well, we figured it was a good deal and we ordered both specials. When the check came, we were charged the regular price. I mentioned it to the waitress and she brought it to the attention of the owner. According to him, the specials menu was printed out with the wrong price and he would not honor the sales price shown. We had to pay the higher price. We really felt tricked and being German myself, I have to say, if this would have happened in Germany, the owners would have handled this in a much more professional manner. Do you want your customers coming back or not? Very disappointing and additionally, the food was nothing to get excited about. We will not go back there.
I enjoyed my visit here. It was very laid back and comfortable. I ordered bratwurst and dumplings. The brats were very good, but those dumplings with the bacon in them I think were the best dumplings Ive ever had. Dinkelacker on tap..you cant go wrong if you like German fare. Thanks, cant wait to come back! Prost!
It cannot be mistaken for anything else but a long time German bar/restaurant. While the food is authentic and the beer ice cold it just isnt real good authentic food. It is okay but no wow factor, I must come back. Staff was very friendly but it does not have the it factor.
We are always greeted and remembered! The staff is always amazing! Oh, and the food? By far the best German restaurant around! Not saying the others arent good, but Guss is spectacular. The saurbraten, pork loin and saurkraut are my favorite! Just remember to call and reserve the prime rib on the weekend!
The service was a little bit to be desired tonight. My wife had ordered her food and when it came out it was cold. She had asked for water and was put off until someone else at the table had asked for water as well. Again she asked the waitress to bring her a glass of Pepsi and it never showed up until I asked her about it. My meal was ok but nothing to write home about it. Prime rib was cooked how I like it but the mashed potatoes were cold and nasty tasting.
Great food. And I mean great as in AWAESOME. They have some German American dishes and lots of solid Americana. Everything is made in house. Beer was good and atmosphere was friendly, clean, and comfortable. Its exactly what you want from a small town restaurant and bar. Owner was working bar and was spot on with food and drink recommendations. Offered samples of even the lesser known vegetable that came with dinner. 75% of people were regulars and they offered great conversation. Some people were speakmg German which was cool. I cant wait to come back.
Old family run restaurant, German. Small family style. Friday night special is great primrib, or home made Turkey. Great home made bread, well drinks and beers, soda or water for the kids. Also other German items. Over flow parking lot across the street. Can be a little on the costly side, but food is well worth it . Take most major credit cards,as well as cash. Can become quite busy on weekends, closed Mondays.
Excellent. I took my father there after we just met at 50 year. He was so happy with Guss we went back for a 2nd time with my step mother. My dad wanted to to go back for the prime rib. He absolutely love it the first time, and had to have it the 2nd time. He comes from Maryland just to go to Guss. And get his prime rib he loved it since I suggested it the first time. So definitely go to Guss for the prime rib its worth the trip.
Stopped for lunch, did not look like much from outside but was very quaint inside. The service was excellent and the specials were fantastic, Schnitzel and SaurBraten. We stayed for dessert, the Raspberry Crepes were truly to die for, the Plum Dumpling and the Apple Strudel were delicous! We will return.
Been driving past this place for a few years. Tonight decided to give a chance wanted to try something local and different. Food was good, not exactly as I remembered growing up eating at my Aunt(German). If your nearby and looking for something that is not the same ol’ then I would recommend stopping in.

2021-12-29I first ate at this restaurant about 25 years ago and the food was amazing! 25 years later, we decided to make the trip and were looking forward to another amazing dinner. Unfortunately, the dinner wasnt quite as amazing as I last remembered it. The food we had was all good, but not great. I dont know what happened after all these years, (maybe a different owner or chef) but it certainly wasnt worth more than 3 stars. The portions are decent, but dont expect to be taking home a doggy bag though. We had some mixed drinks, but they were way too strong to enjoy. Thats what shots are for. We mentioned it to the waitress and she kindly apologized and removed it off the bill (which was very fair). We just played it safe and had beer instead. I remember the place having an old world charm. The decor was still the same but they tried to modernize it by adding colored LED lighting. It was so out of place. It just made it look cheap. It was like bedazzling antique furniture. For what it cost to eat here, I wouldnt recommend it when there are so many more great restaurants in Orange County with better than average food.

2022-03-06Gus has successfully owned + this establishment for over 40 years + for good reason! Uncompromising quality + authentic flavored German cuisine. Just when we thought we couldnt eat one more spaetzle + gravy, it was time for apple strudel We came as a bereavement group + left uplifted by the outstanding comfort food!

2022-04-23I was curious about trying this place after moving in right down the block. Boy was I disappointed. Im not even sure how this place stays open after all these years because it is the worst German food I have ever tasted in my life. Clearly their time has long passed.

2021-01-28The Spatan Octoberfest on tap was ice cold. The blue cheese on the salad was very creamy. The rye bread was very fresh. Mashed potatoes were fluffy. Red cabbage was tender. Schnitzel was crispy. $21.95 for the pork schnitzel dinner. $25.95 for the veal schnitzel dinner. Our waitress, Debbie, was very nice and did not rush us. Will be back.

2021-01-17Absolutely amazing experience and incredible authentic German food. I’d have to say my favorite was the German potato salad and their bratwurst!! The rye bread is also their original recipe dating back to the 30s and it’s SO ridiculously good.Amazing atmosphere and German decorations, super nice owner and their dog Chloe was the best!12/10 will be back again.

2022-06-06Delicious schnitzel and hoffbrau beer on tap. The only reason its not 5 stars is that they dont serve German style pretzels 😃
