This place came highly recommended from a few of my Korean friends. My girlfriend and I are world travelers and have a deep appreciation for Korean food. I dont know if they were having an off day but we were thoroughly disappointed and felt robbed. The short rib meat was good but everything else lacked depth of flavor and we just couldnt taste the love. I know many of you are going to disagree but this is strictly my experience. GO TO THE CAST IRON POT! ITS UP A FEW BLCOKS ,its all you can eat and even thought certain cuts of meat cater to the western palate, they still serve traditional styles at a fraction of the price compared to Hahm Jis with a more responsive waiting staff.
The food here are alway fantastic. All the side dish are tasty. Its a little pricey compare to other asian food but its normal for Korean or Japanese food to be on the pricey side. Lots of street parking around the area harder to find parking in the event and weekend. Also a lot of good coffee and dessert place around the area for after dinner.
Hahm Ji Bach is one of the most popular Korean restaurants in Flushing and they are open 24 hours which is perfect when we feel hungry at late night. The staff was cool but served everything quickly. There is a variety of options on their menu and we had a difficult time making up our decisions. However, it’s kind of disappointing that some dishes were not available.Their sides were great with 10 different kinds. We had their Duck Hotpot with Scaly hedgehog and 2 single orders of BBQ (Hanger steak and Galbi).Overall, their food was not the best but decent. The duck in the hotpot was braised tender and the broth was flavorful. The Galbi was well grilled but the hanger steak was overcooked and too hard to chew.
Found this place on Google and Yelp and decided to bring my family as were not familiar with the neighborhood(Murray Hill). Glad it turned out as a great choice. We went for early dinner before 6pm and this place was packed (indoor) by 7pm. Their food was pretty tasty with good portions. We ordered Dolsot Spicy Squid (not the best Ive had), Sul Lang Tang, Pickled radish stew w. Blood sausages and pigs ears and their summer Ssam platter w. Spicy pork belly. Loved their individualized banchan and highly recommends the last two dishes. My family also enjoyed tasting the traditional Korean wine sample(5 assortments). They were thoughtful to bring us extra glasses to share among us. This is a landmark restaurant and frequented by Koreans and locals. Do check this out if youre in the area!
Summary: With respect to Korean cuisine, Hahm Ji Bach serves as the gold standard in NYC. All menu items are unapologetic in their bold flavors and authenticity. All ingredients, especially the cuts of meat for BBQ, are fresh and of the highest quality. Patrons can experience all the flavors of Korea without actually being in Korea.Must Try: Marinated beef short ribs, LA Kalbi, and Bulgogi. Also recommended: All menu stews and soups are excellent.Avoid: N/A⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ - Outstanding, worth a special excursion
A few blocks off Northern blvd, but so worth the visit. The name has a meaning of giving a generous portion so expect a slightly larger amount of food all for mostly ~$20 per person. You literally can share an order of food thats for one person. Side dishes are plentiful, a lot of stews, all mostly spicy, service is good and can get crowed, place is clean and decor is modern. Will visit again.
Great atmosphere and wonderful staff. Very attentive and eager to explain to you whats going on, whats the popular dishes, how to eat certain things, I had a great time... would go back again. Got the thick cut pork belly Korean BBQ and Bulgogi, it was absolutely delicious!
We came as a group and this was a really fun experience. The pork and sides were a stand out but the bulgogi beef was lacking flavor. They forgot to bring some of the items like the egg and brought them at the very end but we didn’t mind because we were fully satisfied!
I’m a huge fan of Korean bbq, but this was a huge let down. The meat was mediocre and had little flavor to it, the waitstaff was rude and it took multiple attempts to get someone’s attention, and the overall hygiene of the place needs some help. As a heads up, we tried the thick cut pork, marinated short rib, beef brisket, dumplings, and glass noodles and all were mediocre. I wouldn’t recommend.
Best Korean food in town. Waitresses were lovely - they chatted with us, gave us free beer and Champaign once they know it’s a birthday celebration, attentive and quick! Even the lady boss came around to say hi to the tables. Food was good portion, lots of free sides, no problems when asking for additional sides. Definitely recommend!
Love how this place has a full table of side dishes! Friendly staff here too. Their meat quality here is awesome. I ordered the beef briskets, la galbi and pork belly. You must try their thick pork belly - super delicious and they cook it to perfection (not overcooked like how other places do it). I heard they also have a downstairs that can fit 100 ppl? And that you can rent it out for company parties!
It was 2AM. My wife and I just woke up after passing out from drinking all afternoon at a BBQ. Having skipped dinner, we were hungry, and we were treated like royalty at Hahm Ji Bach. We got our usual: pork belly and beef tongue bbq to start, a plate of galbi and a seafood pancake while we wait for our large bowl of beef intestine soup to cook. Although there are many other Korean restaurants in Flushing, we always seem to find ourselves at Hahm Ji Bach. Their food just suits our Taiwanese-American taste buds. The service is very friendly (discrimination against non-Korean speakers is quite low, unlike a lot of other Korean places) and the decor is open and airy with a hint of higher class Korean (compared to a homely hole-in-the-wall feel).
Delicious traditional Korean food. When you walk in, you see all the awards, so you know they are Dong something right(even though I cant read any of them...could just be taekwondo trophies so dont piss them off). The waiters are super friendly and quick. I started off with the japchae and seafood pancake. The japchae was surprisingly good especially with the beef and veggies. The seafood pancake is probably my favorite pancake Ive had in a long time. Its got a good chew with a nice crunch in the outside. For my main, I ordered the LA galbi with cold noodles, no complaints. I tried some of my girlfriends bibimbap and I thought it couldve used some more crunch on the rice so maybe our stone pot wasnt hot enough but it wasnt bad. Good stuff if youre in the neighborhood but the wait can get a little long so I would advise coming before 7pm or be ready to wait 30-60 mins.
In my experience, though it was a nice atmosphere, some of the waiters and other people were unnecessarily rude to my party and I. Korean bbq overpriced averaging at $25+ for 1 person and 1 meat. Bibimpap was not good. Half of the party thought the food was okay at best, and others thought it was not good at all. I would find another place that is more worth the money if it were me.
We sat outdoors. The food and customer service was just as great as eating inside. The servers were really skilled with cooking the meat well and delicious. More importantly, we picked out the meats we wanted but the servers helped picked out the selection of dishes to make sure we were enjoying everything for what its worth. We really enjoyed our meal. The servers were real friendly and nice. No regrets here.
This place was so good. If you are used to going to Manhattan ktown, you will be pleasantly surprised at how amazing everything tastes here compared to even the best spots in ktown. Short rib and skirt steak BBQ was so tender, and the sundobu and deonjang jjigae were some of the most flavorful stews weve had. They also have raw marinated crab which is impossible to find.
It was always my go to spot whenever I craved for soup. Food is delicious. Then why 2 stars?Reason: - there was a cockaroach crawling on the wall behind us!- bathrooms were disgusting.. gender neutral.. toilet and urinal together in a room.. not only reeked of urine but actual urine everywhere- asked for our food to go and were given containers but the containers were dirty.. at first I thought they maybe washed it or something because it seemed wet. However, I used a napkin to wipe it, it was actually soemthing gooey and pink.. asked for another one but that one also had some stains on it as well
My friends and I went out on a Saturday night after making a reservation. This has been my third time dining here, and wow has the quality precipitously decreased. First, the service here is poor to non-existent. The servers looked drenched in sweat and were clearly exhausted from the influx of unending customers. But asking for something was an obvious inconvenience for this server who even rolled her eyes. Second, the food portion is laughable. The amount of food this place touts as serving versus how MUCH they give you is noticeable. Third, food quality is mediocre at best. We got the Korean pork belly bbq and short ribs and it tasted bland. My friends got the bibimbap and were disappointed in flavorless concoction. Will not come here again. Better more affordable restaurants within walking distance. Bonus: it is a cacophonous place here and your speech will definitely be lost and you won’t hear a word your peers say.
We were starving when we got here and were so glad that we were nearly immediately seated on a Friday night. I think we just arrived at a perfect time because we ended up with the only table that became available and was being cleaned. Anyway, ban chan game was solid, $5 beer, and presentation of our beef bbq combo was awesome (see photo). The food looks way better than it tastes.. and they use flat hot grill - not charcoal :-(. However, because every other aspect of our experience was great including attentive and friendly staff and variety of complimentary dessert - I believe they deserve 4 stars (bump up from a 3 I would have given otherwise).
Our waitress was extremely to us for no reasons. Because we did not order barbecue??? I have no idea. The lady didnt serve us AT ALL ok? She completely just ignored every SINGLE request! For gods sake, their food is just literally average...or below. Dont waste your time traveling all the way to this nowhere place hoping their have some extraordinary cuisine. NO. Its Korean food be realistic. Especially if youre Chinese, 去锅大爷吧. Dont torture yourself by going there! Smile :)
Went for dinner yesterday with a friend, one of my best dining experiences to date. I had sundae gukbap (stew with blood sausage) served with rice. It was rich and spicy and really hit the spot. The variety of salad items that came with the meal served to balance the richness of the stew. Waitstaff were responsive and cordial. Cant wait to come back!
I have been coming to this restaurant for several months once a week the food is good but unfortunately they never have the heater onand this last time we ate there someone opened the door to go down to the basement and I asked the busser to close it and he tried to close it until one of the waitresses yelled at him and didnt let him close it so I asked her if she could close it she just ignored me im disappointed how they treat the customer they only care about their business.!
The food is good. The service for us was lacking. The server didnt speak any English and we had to call other servers over anytime we had a question. She started to cook our food and then left it, we cooked it ourselves, no big deal. We had to hunt her down for our drinks, she kept disappearing. The hostess is great though. She always had a smile on her face and helped answer our questions. The meat is definitely not worth the 40.00 servings though. We plan on going back but for the cooked dishes. Well try another place for the BBQ.
We went on the night of Labor Day and it was busy as heck! Finding parking took forever in this neighborhood as there was no valet parking. We waited about 30 mins before being seated and if you are dining indoors, they will check proof of vaccination for COVID-19. Our main dish we ordered was agujjim (spicy braised monkfish with soybean sprouts). Our secondary dish was nakjiboggeum (spicy marinated squid). The main dish was big enough for a party of 4. We enjoyed the dish with rice. Unfortunately, the agujjim was a bit bland for our taste. Side dishes (banchan) were great. Side dishes usually comes with kimchi, macaroni salad, stir fried anchovy with peanuts, seasoned sprouts and marinated spinach. Surprisingly though our food came out quick despite the busyness. Respect to the kitchen. The waitress were very busy accommodating all the tables, including outdoor dining.
We went for my birthday and holy hell the food was amazing! Best japchae Ive ever had. The Korean BBQ was delicious and they even had charcoal to cook the pork over. Excellent selection of traditional dishes and vegetarian options (for my brother). The servers were so friendly and jokes around with us. I cant wait to go there again 💯💯💯👌👌👌
I have been dreading outdoor dining as most restaurants have it by the sidewalk close to the street. This one on the other hand has some tables by the alleyway separated by shower curtains making things very safe during this time when covid is still rampant. Service is still amazing with all staff wearing masks and the food tastes amazing. You can customize how spicy you wish to have your soup so that you are not dying if its too over the top. Recommend coming here during this time for its safety, and any other time for the flavors.
Food is pretty good, generally clean, staff are nice. We were lucky we went on a day it wasnt packed. We brought a birthday cake early for our friend and when we asked for it they just brought it out still in the box, comms issue so she didnt get it so she took it back bc it must have clicked when we all looked at her like what are you doing lol so ruined surprise but then a few later they turned off the lights and temporarily turned restaurant into a disco and brought her cake out properly w the candles and it was literally a disco the loudest jam pumping birthday song youll ever hear, it was absolutely great! She loved it, we loved it so made up for the faux pas. We had a great time!
HORRENDOUS!!! do NOT eat here if youre looking for korean BBQ - the portions are ridiculously small and tastes all burnt and flavorless.the food: its hard to get KBBQ wrong, but this place really does. 75$ plus combo set comes with the smallest portions thats not even enough for one person- a true SCAM. i also had two of their nengmyuns (cold buckwheat noodle). the bibimyun (spicy version) is absolutely disgusting, the mulnengmyun is ok. the noodles in both are so soggy and overcooked. PLUS, they forgot our steamed egg after we asked for it twice, that we ended up just never receiving it at all. like what?the service: so so so BAD. they completely ignored my party although we asked multiple times to try to even PLACE our order. they are just very inattentive and push your questions to another server that doesnt end up doing anything.overall: rude, ridiculous, and left hungry.
Food was good. But I’m leaving 2 stars for service. Arrived and was told we had to eat outside, party of 2. Saw tables available inside, but believed it was to meet a COVID guidelines, so I obliged. After food was finished, we waited for waiter to come back outside, never did. When I went inside to pay check, saw tables that we couldn’t sit at previously filled with patrons... I don’t know or understand why, but I have my suspicions as to why we were told to sit outside. I won’t return ever.
**Update: went for dinner last night with a couple of friends. When we asked for additional banchan, the woman rudely said “No”. This ruined my whole mood and experience!! Because of such mean waitress, giving 3 stars.Old: Love this place so much! Prices are affordable and BBQ is delicious. Staff is OK - could have been more attentive. But overall great place.
This place is so chic looking compared to other Korean barbecue places in the area. Also my party only had to wait 30 minutes for a table, when it was packed. So it wasnt bad at all. The service is slightly lacking, but thats kind of the norm at these places. The food is great though. The kimchi and other side dishes are little tastes of everything. A lot of the time you may not know what youre looking at until you take a bite and tastes it.The meat itself tastes great and I really like how the servers take care of all the cooking for you. The duck is a must to get here, it is by far the best thing I have tried here. I would gladly come back here again.
Simply the best. I remember when they started in the old location. The food quality has not changed. If your lucky you will get seated immediately but if not its worth the wait. Maybe you will get lucky again and see the staff sing Happy Birthday to someone. Very entertaining !!
I have been consistently coming here, at least once a month, since I first discovered it 6 years ago. My husbands first experience with Korean food left him traumatized but Hahm Ji Bach turned that completely around. The food is phenomenal, the service is excellent and the owner really makes you feel like family. I am always excited to come here. My favorite dishes are the Spicy Stir-fried Squid, the LA Galbi, and the Spicy Marinated Beef. During my vegan transition they were more than accommodating and I found a lot of delicious vegan-friendly food too. Whenever I felt sick I had the ddeokkguk (brothy rice cake soup) or the soondoobu (spicy tofu soup). I love this place but, more so, I love the staff!
I adore this restaurant! They give splendid meals, their menu is rich, The chef in that place is a real authority in the kitchen, I love a lot trying all their food. The food is consistently fresh and tasty, the attitude towards the visitors is helpful. I visit often this place and I was never disappointed. I recommend it to all my friends.
The restaurant is still there. It just moved down the block. This Korean restaurant has great food. The main attraction is the belly pork and rib eye steak. Both were delicious, and prepared right in front of us on a bar b que grill. I liked the soft freshly made Korean noodle dish. There were delicious. There are lot of small side dishes, which come with the meal. They are complimentary. I think we even got a complimentary dessert. It was served in a small bowl and it was almost frozen. Everything was good. Reasonably priced. The service was good.
I came here with family for a late lunch on a Sunday and the place was crowded. We were given a ton of delicious and authentic side dishes. We ordered the kalbi and some cold noodles and everything was delicious. The servers were very friendly and accommodating. One of my favorite Korean restaurants Ive been to.
I ordered take out for lunch for me and my colleague while I was working and found a worm in my soup while eating. Disgusted, I called them to demand a refund and they told me I have to bring the food back to them so they can give me a refund. So I take time out of my lunch break to go there with my colleague to bring them back the food (which thankfully I only took 2 bites out of) and they tell me they’re only going to give refund for half the order since I only brought back one dish and that if we wanted a refund on the whole order then I would have to bring back everything. How does that make sense? Making me go back and forth during my work hours to receive compensation for finding a BUG in THEIR food?? They were acting like me finding a bug in the food was a huge inconvenience for them. So we go back with the rest of the food to receive the full refund and the workers like “why didn’t you bring back the side dishes? You have to bring that back too”And get this- their excuse for the bug in my soup was that they have so many vegetables that sometimes they don’t have time to wash them 🤢🤢 Thats disgusting. Needless to say, this has got to be one of the worst take out experiences I’ve ever had, and I’m never going back.
Authentic Korean food selection, very helpful and friendly staff always ready to explain, assist, or suggest different options. Fast service, but for large parties youd probably need a reservation. Tip: Small Army Soup is not small at all and could feed an army of four.
The food are average. The taste and service were acceptable. But, the valet parking service which the restaurant use was horrible.I am not sure the valet parking person is a direct employee of the restaurant or a contracted independent provider. The valet guy stole coins, phone charger, along with other stuffs. I called to let the manager to know about this, she/he never bother to call me again.DO NOT GO!!.. NOT worth of your money or priceless family dinner out.
Blasted in here with a party of 15+ people on Labor Day, after a big music festival in NYC. Although I did not partake in drinking, many people in the group did and I was scared the waiters/waitresses would be annoyed with us, but they actually indulged in the fun and provided us with excellent and very attentive service. The basement had lots of extra seating, which is where we were. They did an excellent job accommodating us and our rowdy behavior. The experience of eating Korean BBQ was a little long for us, but we didnt mind. They first came out with tons of tiny plated appetizers that were included with the meals. I could have gotten full off of these little dishes (tofu, anchovies, kimchi, eggplant, salad, etc). The menu was extensive with so many different choices. I LOVE that our waitress was blunt when she said our choices werent the best and she gave better suggestions on what to get, and Im glad we went with her picks. The marinated short ribs didnt even need to be chewed, the meat was so tender. Everything that we got was actually just perfect. A little pricy, but its worth it with everything that comes with the meal. This restaurant was the best ending to an excellent weekend in NYC.
The food is good and the staff were friendly. They also have an intense birthday song prepared for those of you looking to celebrate there. Seriously, it was like they were using a flare as a candle. Also the song blares out from all the speakers. Beats any other restaurants version that Ive ever seen.
I don’t say this lightly, but here we had the worst dining experience in recent memory. I’ve visited dozens of KBBQ joints across the US as well as a few in Seoul and Busan, and none were even close to the misery that is Hahm Ji Bach.My friends and I were really excited to try a coal Korean BBQ spot after reading so many positive reviews about this restaurant. The few times we had walked past, it looked very busy and had an inviting atmosphere. We considered ourselves lucky when the hostess mentioned there was no wait on an unusually quiet Saturday evening. However, that’s where the good times ended and the nightmare began. Perhaps due to our small party size of three, we were ushered downstairs to a small windowless basement. This is not an incriminating assessment in and of itself, but very much relevant because the BBQ fumes had absolutely nowhere to dissipate. There was poor ventilation and we nearly suffocated from smoke inhalation an hour later, but I’m getting ahead of myself. Our server was clearly overworked — in general 24 hour venues are understaffed — but everything started out on a friendly enough tone. We were not expecting to be coddled. She recommended we order one meat dish per person, though we decided that at $25-$30 per dish, we would share the thinly sliced beef, an order of pork belly, as well as the glass noodles as an appetizer. Our server later said that our meal only came with two portions of rice, and made it sound like she was doing us a huge favor when we asked for a third. Even the person in our party who spoke Korean to her noticed the poor attitude. The panchan (side dishes) were nothing to write home about. The steamed egg was burnt through and tasted like charred plastic. When confronted with this, our server insinuated that because it’s “free”, the restaurant doesn’t care about the quality of these dishes. This wouldn’t have bothered me if it hadn’t taken them over 30 minutes to bring out our meats. That’s right, simply to bring out the raw meat took the restaurant a full half hour. Normally this part takes under five minutes at a proper KBBQ joint. The chadulbaeggi (thinly sliced beef) was grisly and unremarkable, not to mention only about 6 ounces of meat - certainly not worth the $31 price tag. It also took them an inordinate amount of time to refill a single side dish of peanuts and anchovies, after I asked about it three times. Don’t expect to get water refills. The waitstaff’s attitude was poor towards each other as well as to all the customers in the downstairs dungeon. They were clearly stressed out and taking it out on the job. There’s rude, and then there’s this lady (“angry ajumma”). She got upset with me for asking about the coal bbq, because apparently they only use coal for select dishes. Finally, the Samgyeopsal (thick pork belly) was indeed the highlight of the meal, though after feeling abused, exhausted and confused, we weren’t really able to enjoy it.The basement filled up with smoke towards the end and the large party next to us begged the waitstaff to pay upstairs. We got out as soon as we could, but I’ll never get those two hours of my life back.TL;DR: stay away from this place. it’s understaffed, overpriced, unimpressive, and grossly mismanaged. In addition, poor food quality and safety standards make it dangerous for vulnerable segments of the population (e.g. asthmatic, elderly, infants). If you want good KBBQ in this area, I highly recommend Han Joo just down the street.
The yangyum kalbi was really good. The jaeyuk beokkum was good too. I dont personally eat spicy food, but my boyfriends family get the agujjim all the time and they say its really good. The banchans are also delicous especially the peanut with sardines, tomato kimchi and macaroni salad. Service was great too.
Pork spare ribs were fall off the bone delicious and super tender. But the ojinga bokum was super spicy...we have had ojinga bokum from many Korean restaurants and this was by far the spiciest ever. The place was nice and not loud. Servers were attentive. We will definitely be coming back.
Loved the restaurant! We went early at 5:30PM on Saturday so we had no wait, but this place is usually packed so Id advise you to go early. We had the dumplings which werent that great but the Soon dubu and kalbi tang was to die for. They also give lots of side dishes and have great service! Definitely an authentic Korean restaurant to try out.
Ive been coming to Joes Shanghai for quite sometime although Ive never really tried their soup dumplings (weird.. I know), until recently, when I started eating pork again.Boy, was I missing out! I am a huge fan of their crab meat soup dumplings. Perfect amount of meat, broth, & the skin was not too thick.Ive also tried their vegetable fried rice and stir fry Shanghai noodles. Portions are generous. & the meal itself is extremely affordable. Be aware that most likely youll have to wait/share a table with strangers but its totally worth it!
Food was all great. Service was fine.I felt someone’s eyes who served food for other table awkwardly when i received extra tofu from other person who took care of our table. i paid enough tip to the woman who served our table. However i didn’t know why the woman in charge of other table looked at us like that.
It was a little busy when I went there however they were staff with about 4 to 5 servers when I visited. After waiting about 15 to 20 minutes I finally ordered my food. But 10 minutes later they came back without even knowing what we ordered I just wasted my time for 30 minutes for nothing. I would summarize my experience as the worst experience. I will probably never, ever revisit this restaurant.
The bbq food is made right in front of us on the table bbq, which is pretty cool! Food was pretty good if you can handle the different type of spiciness of korean food! It was one of our friends birthday, so the cake cutting was arranged by the place, so much fun with the lights off, everyone singing along with music. Overall, good one!
This was our favorite Korean place, but our experience here was not acceptable.1. Its a popular and busy place so keep your standard by hire more people. 2 waitresses and 2 busboys were taking care 7 big and 1 small tables.2. Our order was forgotten. No one checked temperature of our grill when it was off. They did replace our order after we complained.3. Meats were defrosted, but not dried so they were cooked in water. So it was a watery mess.
My new favorite Korean restaurant oh the service provided was sincerely executed with thoughtful suggestions, quite frankly the way that you wish to be treated. Our food was well prepared then the ample banchan made for a marvelous presentation. This echoes what the former Kum gang san had years ago, not just numbers of banchan dishes but also great flavors. The atmosphere was really pleasant a relaxing presence is made.
Went for the Korean BBQ cooked at your table by friendly smiling host ladies. Had pork belly, rib eye and especially duck. Also had a short rib and rice casserole, a squid plate and a big seafood pancake. The table was filled with dozens of vegetable and spice accompaniments like sea weed, peanuts with tiny anchovies, fish, tofu, bean paste, seaweed salad, of course Kim chi, plus dustings and sauces. Lots of fun to roll your meat in the greens, spice em up and bite.Favorite was the rib eye sliced thin and chopped - tender and flavorful. Similar for the duck. Pork belly was OK but Ive had better. Two of us loved the short rib rice casserole and two wished it had more meat. Most of us didnt like the squid so much, kind of spicy and chewy - next time Ill pick the octopus I think and stick with bbq.The egg seafood pancake was almost a meal alone: quite delicious. Also among the extras was an egg custard bowl almost dessert to offset the spices - great comfort food.So much fun - will go back for sure. The staff is just the best, they made us feel so comfortable. We appreciate that!
Last time I went to this restaurant, I was very disappointed. We waited for a table for 20 minutes. Then we were stuck in the corner, near the door. The food was not as good as last time. We were not brought all of the side dishes. After the food was dropped off at our table, the waitress disappeared for the rest of the evening. Everyone in our party was very unhappy. I will NOT go back to this restaurant. There are many other restaurants in the area with better wait service, and just as good if not better food. Prices are expensive.
The waitress was very helpful in teaching us the way to eat the BBQ meats. Pork belly, bulgogi and spicy squid were all very good! Also came with a lot of side dishes so youll definitely leave here feeling satisfied! A little more on the pricy side but worth a once in a while excursion!
Food is delicious. The owner here is rude and mean. We took our friends from my home country and ate there about three times. Rude to customers and employees. The employees were very nice. I can find something delicious like here somewhere else. You just lost 4 customers which you would think its not a big deal.
One of my coworkers showed me this place. We went as a group of six and we were attended pretty quickly. The food was amazing. I dont remember what the names were but we had pork, beef, and duck. That doesnt help much but they were all so delicious!I went there again recently and the service wasnt the same. I went with a friend and they ended up burning our food and didnt give us everything we ordered. It was only one bad experience hopefully but other than that Ill go there again because the food is just that good.
Big trendy restaurant in the middle of Murray Hill. Theres usually a wait but luckily I only went with my husband do we got seated right away. They have plenty of side dishes that was delicious. We filled up on those sides that when we got our food, we were too full to finish.I ordered the ox tail soup with noodles. It was delicious. They had plenty of thick slices of meat and their broth was in point.Hubby ordered their kimchi jiggae which is always good. Flavorful and spicy broth.
I never make any food reviews but I came here at 2am on a Friday night saw the great reviews and it was open 24/7. Once we got there we were seated immediately wasn’t busy at all. Food came fairly fast but the dumpling soup we ordered was luke warm. We also ordered the galbi which they cooked in the kitchen rather than on the grill and it came cold. But the waitress forgot the 2 sodas I ordered even though she repeated it when I ordered it. I didn’t mention anything either. seafood pancake also was a bit too cold. The bibimbap on hot stone was decent and we were offered fruits and a tasteless orange slush before we left. When it came to paying the order was $83 before tip. We left $93 which was more than a 10% tip and considering that it was 2am and the waitress didn’t do anything but serve us cold food and forget the soda that she heard me order we thought that a 9$ tip was acceptable. However when we were at the doorstep the waitress stops us to tell us that the tip was only $9. The funny thing was that I told my boyfriend that I had a feeling she would mention something before we left. So after everything we ended up giving a total of $15 tip for cold food and a waitress who barely did anything. Why be open 24/7 when you can’t serve warm food? Personally I’ve been to a way better 24/7 Kbbq spot.
One of the most popular restaurants in Murray Hill. The food is always reliable and good but Im very suspicious of the short ribs because upon unrolling you realize the meat isnt attached to the bone. A common trick used by Korean restaurants substituting the pricey short rib cut with a cheaper alternative. My suspicion was confirmed when they refused to grill the bones which are also strangely missing meat on them. The meat is usually scraped off the bones when reusing the bones because the excess meat on them will look different over time and multiple marinades. I can not be 100% sure but I have my doubts.
I picked this place based on a recommendation from the great Korea home cook Maangchi when she gave a talk at the local YMCA. And she wasnt wrong. This place is amazing! The banchan was so fresh, with a wide variety AND it was unlimited! For our table we had the pork belly (which my friends said was amazing), sliced duck, and a variety of beef. The meat was fresh and of great quality and our server showed us how to best eat them which was super helpful. If you want good authentic Korean food and are a big fan of banchan like I am, this place is perfect. Cannot wait to go back!
Hahm Ji Bach is your average Korean restaurant in Flushing, Queens. Unfortunately, there is a great amount of competition from much better managed and high-quality restaurants offering superior service and delicious Korean food in the neighborhood. I would recommend this restaurant for family outings and large groups. However, there are more authentic Korean restaurants nearby for more adventurous foodies and connoisseurs of traditional cuisine.
First time coming here even if I dine around Murray Hill often. Whenever I pass by, its always super crowded and parking is a nightmare. During the week, its not as bad and you can easily find a parking spot on northern- 2 blocks up.I came with 2 other friends and we ordered the kimchi stew with dumplings. We ordered the large size which was more than enough to feed the 3 of us. I would say its big enough for at least 4-5 people. They gave us a ton of side dishes and they were all fairly good. They even offered to refill on some side dishes we devoured while waiting for our soup. The kimchi stew came with udon noodles, rice cake, dumplings, in a boiling pot of kimchi stew. It was flavorful with kimchi and perfect to eat with rice. I like rice cake in my kimchi stew normally so I was thrilled to see them in this.At the end, they gave pineapple slices and the pumpkin juice which was delicious!! It was light and refreshing with a hint of pumpkin and a few pumpkin pieces. Seriously, its pumpkin season!
Came here again for my friends birthday, wasnt sure if I wanted to come knowing last time I was here the service sucked. Not surprised theyre still the same. Our waitress wasnt friendly at all, she didnt respond when we asked her to refill our water and it took us 5 tries until she finally gave us some water (dying of thirst here... ahhh!). She had no patience when we were ordering our food and had this attitude when we asked for recommendations. Dont bother asking because she will just point to the most expensive items on the list or tell you to stick to the barbecue section. Now to the food, we got seafood pancake, pork belly, japchae, spicy pork, galbi and squid. The portion was waaay too small for the price and the flavor for spicy pork and squid were exactly the same. Pork belly had no flavor at all so youll just have to use the dipping sauce they provided (umm.. not great). Seafood pancake was kinda bland and if you want to find better seafood pancake I recommend checking out arirang near 163st, they make it so much better there. Japjae was decent but also small in portion. They wouldnt refill our banchan when we asked, the lady was like oh you have to finish them all before we give you a new batch. That never happened and we didnt bother asking again. When we got the bill they calculated tips post tax and demand that amount even if you dont want to pay that much (tbh for the service we got, I didnt even want to tip!)Overall I wouldnt recommend coming to this place (might be better if youre korean), there are other places nearby that provides way better service and better food. Googong Tan next door is good or kang ho dong baekjeong is good for Korean barbeque. I dont usually give any restaurants 1 star but this experience was the worst! wont be coming back again.
Solid Korean food and not super expensive. We came here for my wifes birthday. We thought about getting the kalbi but made a last second decision to get the galbi jjim instead, which is the stew made from kalbi. I thought it was pretty good but the wife thought it was just okay. The banchan was solid -- everything tasted fresh. The kimchi wasnt the best but thats ok. We also got the seafood pajun, which was pretty good. The food is a solid value and would come back here any time for it. The decor is very homey, which I prefer. However, the service left a lot to be desired. Their managers must train the waiters to not show any emotion and just be as quick and efficient as possible. They come off as being a bit cold. If the wait staff were a bit friendlier, Id give this place 5 stars.
OMG. Yes. 뼈해장국 😋. So good. So messy. Ask to make it spicy. It has pork neck bones and blood (the bloos just tastes like 순대, nothing too crazy but you can leave them out without affecting the soup flavor). Im sure you can get typical BBQ or scallion pancake or whatever, but might as well get something that you cant make at home you know?
I wanted my aunt and uncle visiting from Korea to eat here because they give good side dishes. However, they have changed. Before I came, my aunt and uncle were in the restaurant first and they treated my family like dirt, thinking that they are not from NY. Welp, Im a NYker and they regretted having treated them rudely: asking them to pay more tip when my aunt clearly gave 25% tip. Then I didnt know and ended up paying them tip again because the hostess by the door asked for more. So, for a $26 meal, we ended up giving them $15 tip!!! Very rude, no sensible, and money greedy. Will never return and make sure to let my acquaintances know as well
I dont normally pay much attention to ambiance, but this restaurant is strikingly well-lit, airy and does NOT smell like smoke! On to the important part: banchan here is plentiful and diverse, and the meats are great too. I also liked the crisp edges on the kimchi pancake and the mesmerizingly wobbly egg custard. Order in Chinese if you can, it will be better than stumbling through the menu in English.
When I first came into the restaurant I was surprised of the interior decoration, the lighting and the color of the walls looked great. I am very critical with Korean cuisine. Every side dish has to taste just right. When I tried every side dish the taste was good. Not oily or sour. The main food was amazing. I had white beef bone broth Sul Lung Tang. I enjoyed my meal and next time I want to try the Korean BBQ.This place is AUTHENTIC KOREAN FOOD!Tip- Every Jan 1 all Korean restaurants (most places in Flushing) give out free Korean Duk Gok so ask the manager if they offer it on Jan 1st
OMG I cant recommend this place enough. The food is amazing, the prices are reasonable and the side dishes given are plentiful and ever refilling. The bqq is different from any other place with a below table suction system keeping the air clean and leaving you smelling less like you were standing over a grill. They have great non-bbq dishes as well, beer by the bottle, and normal Korean drinks like maquli and soju
Updated review 07.14.2020Absolutely horrid customer service. 한두번은 참아도 이번엔 정말 최악이었어요. 다시는 오더 안합다. I let it go a few times because I know people arent always in their best mood. But, today was a true picture of their overall low quality customer service, and an example of a bad owner/boss (I heard him yelling at one of his workers over something so trivial). This wasnt my first experience, seeing this restaurant owner in this light either... Tsk... Never ordering from here again.
This place will save you from the overpriced and underwhelming dreges of Korean food in ktown. Bonus points for being right of the LIRR Murray Hill train stocks which is literally a 20m ride of Penn station. The prices are not dissimilar from the citys but the quality is orders of magnitude better. This establish is a perfect pick if youre craving the full gamet of Korean foods: the free apps, the bbq meats, the stews, the makkoli. Now for the standouts: the Kalbi was well marinated, the Jap jae when I generally find bland was ridiculously good and served warm, the soondobut was favorable and fresh. Double bonus points the lady in charge that night was super nice. Our friends were running late and we took up a table probably longer than they expected and she was totally chill and even thought to bring us seafood pancake which she recommended with the makkoli we ordered while we waited.
Everything was okay until our last load of pork bbq the waitress came and turnned the fire off when the meat wasnt even cooked all the way. Since pork belly has lots of fat this particular meat must be cooked fully. I called the waitress to turn back the fire then she pretended to turn it back on but never did. from what I know The bbq pan has to be lifted and light it manually to the gas ... She just turnned the knob back and force. Without knowing we were waiting for bbq to heat up for 15min .. Never got reheated and they were all busy with other new customers. First time to this place but never going back again. We left almost quarter portion of the meat.
Really delicious food and the kindest staff I’ve ever encountered at a restaurant, in my entire life. I came here after going to the BTS concert in New York and they were very gracious and accommodating despite the high traffic they were encountering. Definitely you shouldn’t miss this spot while you are in Flushing. If you don’t believe me, believe the fact that Hahm Ji Bach were BTS’ sole caterers for the three days leading up to the concert. If the food here is good enough for seven international kpop stars, it’s supremely more than good enough for the average traveler to Flushing. Definitely a very impressive feat; the food here is reason enough to celebrate though. Thank you so much for your hospitality once again!!!
I was born and raised in South Korea, so I should know something about authentic Korean barbecue, and Hahm Ji Bach is as authentic as it gets. I ordered a popular Korean meal of Galbi (marinated boneless ribs), and it was delicious. Following a standard Korean dinner route, I ordered a Naengmyeon (cold buckwheat noodle soup) after the meat. This wasnt extraordinary, but still was good. If you like Korean barbecue, or would like to try it for the first time, I strongly recommend Hahm Ji Bach.
Very bad experience at this place, never again. Very slow, forget my rice and said thought I don’t want rice. Forgot my sidedishs and ask me again, which other restaurants never happen before. Place is kinda old, BBQ smog everywhere. The most disappoint Korean restaurant service.
Always my go-to spot for some Korean food. My only issue is that their valet parking takes up residential parking and try to claim it as their own just because there’s a stupid cone there. It’s illegal to block a parking space in NYC using a cone unless it’s your driveway.
Joah is such a cute place!! The restaurant is decorated very simply, with potted plants, succulents and bottles. My boyfriend and I came here for dinner around 6:30 and the restaurant was pretty much empty. I ordered the Chadol Rabokki which had beef brisket, rice cakes, ramen and fish cake slices in a swet spicy gochujang sauce. The rice cake was soft and chewy and the beef brisket has a nice sweet taste to it and the sauce was hot and spicy. My boyfriend got the Joah Special Ramen with Pork Tonkatsu and a fried egg. The pork tonkatsus breading was pretty flavorful, making it taste good even when it got soggy from the broth. The broth was light and spicy. For drinks, I got the Blue Aloe Soju which has aloe juice, lemon juice and blue soju decorated oh so cutely in a glass. I loved that it was light and not too sweet, however wished the soju flavor came through a little more. The waitresses here are amazing! So friendly and attentive. I cant wait to come back and try their other foods and cocktails!
If there was no stars to write a review that’s what I would have given this place for a review. By far the worse service experience ever. Walked in and no one was in front, it was not busy what’s so ever. Took 15 minutes to get seated. When we placed our order in we specified exactly what we wanted and some how our order still got messed up. Our drinks came out after the grill was started. I asked the lady why we were given the wrong food order and she said the other lady told me her that was right. When it was not. I made a list of the entree numbers before we ordered and showed the server she wrote down the completely wrong things found out when the food came out. When the bill came out they tried charging me for 3 beers when I only order 2. The server had to call the previous server through the phone and asked which took more time. Also had some food left over I asked for 3 boxes for some meat squid and rice she came out with 1 small container and only boxed the squid. I asked politely for another box for the rice and her response was ‘ rice was on the house your not allowed to take it’ I spent over $190 to tell me I can’t take my left over rice home to basically tell me that they would rather throw it away then keeping a customer satisfied I think this place needs a change. And when paying I had to go up and sign at the front counter she was just watching on how much I tipped her and insisted on tipping her 25% when service wasn’t great, I never write reviews but, honestly by far the worse service ever! Food was not to die for go somewhere else.
If youre willing to venture out of Manhattans K-town, this is the place to be. The ban chan are fresh, plentiful and never-ending. They dont just give you 3-4 small dishes, you get more like 9-10 side dishes that could honestly fill you up before you get your main dishes. Pace yourself! Lettuce, salad, spinach, pickled cucumbers, bean sprouts, tofu cake, kimchi, prepared bean curd, many sauces... I dont even think I listed everything! The meat isnt some dinky frozen stuff, its HUGE SLABS of meat, plentiful and very very very tasty. We ordered the thick slices of pork and LA kalbi. They help to cook your raw meat on the hot stove and for NOOBS like myself, are willing to teach you how to properly eat the various types of meat that you order. Everything is very well marinated and full of flavor. They make sure that you dont overcook the meat and are very attentive to make sure you have everything that you need. It is premium prices but its worth paying for the quality. Its hard to find that in Manhattan.
Hahm Ji Bach is accessible by LIRR. This is one of the best Korean restaurants I have ever been to. Excellent for large groups. There is no fee to sit in the room downstairs. We had a private party or about 20 and it was just perfect. Make sure you order Sam Gyup Sal which is giant slabs of pork belly bacon grilled. You wrap it in thin slices of radish and dip it in crushed peanuts and bean paste. Also top it with perilla leaves. Its like a Korean taco. Doesnt that sound good?
The food was super delicious and the portion was very generous.. I order haemul pa jeon (seafood pancake) for appetizer, haemul dolsot (seafood rice hotpot or sth like that), and yangnyeom galbi (marinated short rib).. Everything was delicious, and I like every single bite of them including the tasty side dishes..
The Korean food in Murray Hill Queens really does taste better than K-Town in Manhattan. I went here during the Winter and it was the perfect place. The tables are a little cramped but they do their best to crowd it with food. I had never seen so much banchan in my life. The dish to get is the pork belly. I found the duk bo ki too spicy but bearable. They gave us complimentary soup which was really good. Tasted homemade. You can take the LIRR here or drive. Its worth it.

2022-05-10Yup! I loved the beef tofu stew and seafood pancake. The selection of bonchon/tasters was delicious. There was no skimping on the seafood pancake. The tofu stew had an egg inside and just tasted amazing 😍.

2022-03-27This is one of our favorite Korean places to go to. They always give so much of the small dishes. We always order thick pork belly and galbi and a mackerel, at the end of the meal we are extremely full

2021-08-26Hahm Ji Bach...the one and only. Decided to dine at the restaurant on a Wednesday evening, the indoor seating was very full so opted for the outdoor seating on this hot evening. The pitcher of Hite beer for $15.99 is a steal, as a glass would cost you $5.99 and was perfect for this humid evening. The restaurant does follow the New York State mandate of checking for vaccinations for their dine in customers. Ordered a marinated galbi and fresh galbi (short ribs) the grill the meat outside on a portable gas stove and flat griddle top. The marinated galbi is the way to go as it is both flavorful and tender. The fresh cut galbi was a bit overcooked and lacked any type of flavor. The best part of the meal is the banchan (small dishes) which comes out in an abundance amount, you can also request for more should you finish the tiny tapas type dishes. The spicy naeng myun (spicy cold noodles) dish was especially refreshing on this hot evening and really hit the spot. It was a perfect meal, my only observation was that they are definitely more attentive to the inside customers and there were stretches without seeing any staff outside. But the wait staff was very friendly and accommodating. Will visit again soon for the marinated galbi. Pricing point is decent for the size of the meal today. 👌

2022-06-29I have been here twice and really love this place. The Banchan consisted of 10 plates which provided a great variety while we waited for food. I ordered 육회 비빔밥 which had a really good flavor and a huge portion for the price. Their menu is pretty extensive and there are some deals for 2 if you bring someone with you. They also always give pumpkin juice after your meal which is a nice touch. The waitress stopped and had a short chat with us and the staff are pretty nice.

2022-03-25The food was good, but staff attitudes was the worst. If you want to eat in good mood, It’s very recommended you go somewhere else.It seems that the entire waitress and cashier are equipped with strange skills to make good food tasteless.Ive been visiting here from time to time for a few years now, but Im confident that firing yesterdays staffs will help boost sales.

2022-04-24Awful experience. We ordered pork and one of the dishes was served beef by mistake. The person at the counter DID NOT APOLOGIZE even once even when my friend mentioned that he did not eat beef for religious reasons. I would give a minus ten to an establishment that doesnt respect its customers. I get it, its rush hour but are you kidding me? He literally said that you ate other meat so why is it such a big problem!!!! The problem is that my friend doesnt eat beef which is why we did NOT order beef. We ate the beef served by mistake because we were not aware that the meat being served was beef. Its as simple as that. But it was us that highlighted that we were served the wrong thing. We are still contemplating a lawsuit at this juncture. Shocking experience!

2021-10-15Solid no frills Korean food at a good price. Lots of variety in soups/casseroles so you can find exactly what you want here.

2021-03-21Ive been to a few Korean BBQ places and this one was ok. They currently have indoor and outdoor dining so they can seat a large amount of people. The interior is simple with lot of plants. They are very busy so the servers arent there to kiss up to you but there to give you quick recommendations and explain how to eat certain things. They have a very large menu. From what I noticed they have a large variety of soups. The meat selection is vast but u wish they had better combination options. Some of the things wr ordered were chile pancakes, cold beef noodles, dumplings, pork belly, and short rib. The food overall was tasty.

2021-09-05I had the rare opportunity to come to Flushing for a date lunch. We haven’t had Korean food in a while and the wife was hankering for agujjim - which is a spicy braised monkfish. It’s main ingredient aside from the monkfish is kongnamul which is soybean sprouts. To the uninitiated, given its typically high price, it might be questionable on the risk/reward scale for trying new foods. Anyhow, we went for it. It’s usually a gigantic platter sized dish so it’s typically a family-style serving. It was just the two of us so we enjoyed the banchan (side dishes) while we waited. I have never been to this location, but have been to one of the prior locations many times before and was pretty reliable. There was the required cabbage kimchee as well as the radish kimchee, anchovy with peanuts, mild seasoned shishito peppers, potato/apple salad, marinated spinach, seasoned sprouts, as well as some spicy mackerel. This was all on in addition to a kale salad with a savory mayo dressing. The place was pretty busy with a steady stream of customers (always a great sign). We did end up waiting a bit - which is kind of expected for a dish that probably isn’t ordered as frequently. When it finally arrived we dug in. Would it taste as we remembered and were expecting? Would it be worth the wait? We’ll, it generally was. As usual, a mountain of kongnamul served piping hot with many chunks of monkfish pieces mixed throughout. It was so good, but the only thing that really detracted from the dish was how sweet it was. It’s usually spicy and maybe a bit salty, but there was an unexpected sweetness to it that took a bit of the shine off what was otherwise a tasty reminder of a beloved dish. Between the banchan and the enormity of the dish, we ended up taking about half home with us to eat for dinner. Other notes - they were checking vaccination cards but seating capacity indoors seemed to be at the normal without any additional spacing (is that even still required) and of course they had outdoor seating as well. It’s located near the Murray Hill LIRR station so convenient to get to and in a spot with a cluster of other Asian restaurants. Solid but relatively on par for Korean restaurants.
