Worst restaurant experience I’ve ever had - sat in the back, basically the dish washing room, and the owner yelled at his employees constantly - slamming things and shaving past them. He mentioned it was a whole new staff and everyone’s first day. No accountability. We also ordered appetizers and three of the four came. The forth one never came and at hour 2, they hadn’t even started making our main course. We eventually paid for the appetizers and walked out. Toxic environment and will not go again.
Our favorite Basque restaurant. A whole lot of love goes into every dish. A few favorite staples are the fishermans rice, suckling pig, and the octopus. Despite the challenging times, they never disappoint. Dishes just magically appear one after another from the tiny kitchen!
Amazing place! Owner Mikel is a proud Basque and a great host. Menu full of tapas that are beautifully prepared. Bonito al Furikake was spectacular. The Pulpo with Espuma de Patata was delightful. Be sure to ask for specials that dont appear on the menu. Get to this place while you can and watch this place grow!
Incredible food, inexpensive as far as tapas go, and the nicest owner Ive ever met. The gazpacho (pictured) was delicious. The owner said it was made from produce from the nearby Union Square farmers market. The langoustines and shrimp in the arroz meloso were flavorful and really well cooked. We did not try a bad thing here, and I cant stress enough how generous the owner is. This is his first restaurant apparently, and he went ridiculously above and beyond to leave us with a good impression of the place, even though we already loved it because of the food.
If you are looking for authentic Spanish food and Spanish service here is the place to be. The chef is super dope and spontaneous in a good way! The food was very nicely cooked, the texture, flavor, and presentation were on point. Many people commented on the service, if you are looking for an efficient New Yorker style service, don’t come. Be prepared to come and go with the flow.I’ve tried many Spanish food in different countries, this one is definitely a lot better than the ones with 4.6+ ratings in NYC
Wish I could give this restaurant 0 stars. We were a group looking to celebrate a special occasion on Saturday night. The restaurant gave away the private room we booked a month in advance to another group. When we arrived there was no apology or attempt to rectify the issue in a fair and reasonable manner. I was appalled by the hostile and aggressive tone in which the staff spoke to 6 women who they confirmed were not in the wrong. In summary, take your business and time elsewhere where it will be appreciated and respected. This restaurant has despicable customer service that has the ability to ruin your whole weekend.
We sat down at 6:10 and served the first appetizer at 7:03... The service was not good (except for being very aggressive at checkout) and we were never filled with water. Not once did he ask, Everything all good? Or something like that. The food was good, the chef was attentive, but the service was terrible. 10% tips
Avoid! Hazardous to your mental health! Read the one star reviews; they’re all like our experience last night. First off, the tables are high, wobbly and tiny and you have to sit on a barstool with no back. Our drinks did not arrive at the same time. I ordered a main dish that clearly should have been an appetizer. Although visually well plated, it turned out to be two small shrimp and two small langoustines… with a teaspoon of micro-greens. Nothing else! We waited an hour and my companion’s dish never came so we left and had to eat somewhere else. We saw other people struggling with the uncomfortable seating and another couple left after having to wait too long. Our server had no idea how to wait on a table. If it hadn’t been so annoying, it would have been laughable. Never again.
If I can give 0 stars I would. Waited 1 hour for our drinks to come— and all we ordered was wine. Then waited another hour, food was still didn’t show up. Food finally showed up when we asked if we can leave if the food doesn’t come in 10 minutes….. the wait staff were very apologetic but they kept saying “there’s nothing we can do”. At the end of the horrible 3 hours, one of our dishes still didn’t come. And they chef “went to take a break” and hasn’t even started cooking our last dish. We had to go a block away to get jerk chicken because we were still starving after the 3 hours of torture. No discount was offered for this crazy experience. Don’t know how a restaurant like this could survive in NYC. Sooooo AVOID THIS PLACE IF YOU ARE HUNGRY! I will never be back.
Definitely was a huge disappointment! I called this restaurant to plan my husband bday party for 18 people over a month in advance. Not once I was told that this place cannot possibly accommodate such party. They told me that we will sit on “air conditioned terrace’ . Well , the terrace is tiny nook that can barely fit 8 people. “Air conditioning “ were 3 fans that were blowing our hair into the food . They didn’t even have regular tables and chairs. It’s more of bar stools. We were cramped and extremely uncomfortable. I had no choice but to stay there because I planned this dinner, picked a menu w chef. He never mentioned to me that his restaurant is more of “ small bite” place. When we got there , we had to wait until other people leave . As far as food , because it was a lot of us the quality definitely was not up to par with what they post on their Instagram page. Definitely wasn’t platted the same and looked un appealing Huge disappointment and I felt embarrassed with my friends because I picked a menu to make it convenient for everyone. Should have been told by the owner that they can’t serve and sit such crowd.
I wish there were less stars to give. We booked a reservation A WEEK IN ADVANCE for 4, they sat us in a table that can fit 2 and told us that once the party next to us will be done they will move us to their table. As they were about to move us, another party came in and they just gave them the table and basically left us no choice to leave - all of that after 40 minutes of telling us that theyll move us. Both waiters were rude and didnt even pretend to care. Food might be really good but we never got to taste it. One of my worst experiences ever in a restaurant
Really wanted to love this place as the food can be great, but both times ive been here the service has been horrendous. Waited 35 mins before getting seated for our reservation on a table way too small for our party, waited another 1 hour before we were served our first dish (which wasnt what we ordered), and our white wine was served warm. Ended up waiting for 3 hours and only got 2 out of the 6 dishes we ordered. Never coming back
It was a precious warm day during a winter here in NYC and we did NOT regret spending it outdoor dinning at Haizea! The food was wonderful! We ordered the Pulpo and the Shrimp with baby eels and all the flavors were fantastic! The owner Chef Mikel is an incredible host. To top it off, not only is their outdoor set up beautiful but we also felt CoVid-safe . Can’t wait to come back here again.
After reading about Haizea in the New Yorker, my girlfriend and I made a reservation. Upon arrival, there was no host or hostess, the two servers were exasperated and the chef was making a dessert. We were told that no table was available, despite our rez. Every table I saw only had water, except for the table inside, where after I inquired, was for friends of the chef.We waited 20 minutes before asking a different waitress (the first left in a hurry) about our table. She just held her hands up and said to maybe wait. Another patron walked up and told the waitress that she had ordered an hour ago, and never got her food. No one was in the kitchen. I promptly left. The chef was outside at one of the patio tables taking selfies after hand dropping off the dessert.I’m presuming that the flash of fame from the New Yorker has gotten to his head. I have never before set foot in such an ill managed “restaurant”. Perhaps the food is delicious as reported. Perhaps not. I would have liked the opportunity to try ANYTHING from the menu. To anyone who wants to eat here— good luck. You’ll need it.
Have not been so disappointed dinning in NyC for a long time. Just dinned there tonight and the servers had no idea what we ordered (yes there was a long delay in everything as simple as getting us water), in the end, they of course brought us the wrong bill… if you want details, we ordered the octopus which was covered with a thick layer of spices but had no flavor when biting into it. the lobster rice dish was better but the rice was clearly cooked separately from the lobster as it had no lobster flavor whatsoever. I guess this place used to be good but perhaps due to short of the right staff (chefs included), the quality is just not there anymore. John Slattery from Mad Men stopped by with his whole family looking for food btw but left quickly to go to the swanky bar next door instead. Not sure what he saw wrong about this place but i wish i had done the same…
The chef seems unfriendly - we (me and bf) were sitting next to another American couple and the chef came in and only greeted the other couple, asked them if the temp was good enough and he - the chef - totally ignored us. The food is mediocre. Won’t come back and won’t recommend at all.
So, I wouldn’t want to write a review for this, but the way we were treated is like nothing I’ve ever experienced. We showed up at 7:05 for a 7p reservation… and immediately noticed a very weird vibe in the place. There wasn’t any cooking going on, a couple people were standing around and no one really greeted us… check 1 for something being off. Finally spoke to someone about our reservation after several minutes and they confirmed but started fidgeting around… apparently they had sat someone in our table …. That’s fine, it happens. He said, look Im going to put you in this back area to wait, should be 10 minutes, here’s a glass of cava. All good, no worries… very nice of him. So we sat and waited….and waited…and waited…. With zero updates. Finally it hit 7:40 and we were a little perturbed at this point, so we flagged down the only waiter in the place to ask what the issue was. We had a 9pm comedy show reservation so were starting to get worried we’d miss it. He proceeds to tell us…uh, yeah I don’t know… maybe you should leave. Uhhh what?!! So we start getting a little angry at this point, and flagged down the original reception gentleman whom appeared to be either the head chef or owner. He just shrugged his shoulders and said, not sure what to do… while not coherently really saying anything to us. Worst service, understanding, and organization I’ve ever seen. You made a mistake… that’s completely fine, however keep your customer updated. We finally walked out around 7:45/7:50 and left to another restaurant. I understand staffing shortages, house issues, etc…. But if that’s the problem, be open and clear about it and we’ll be 100% understanding. The mish mash of service we received was a disaster. I’ll give 1 star for the kind glass of cava we received. I’ve been to San Sebastián multiple times and love the basque culture and food… this is not a representation of either. Go elsewhere!!
Gave away the last two tables to walk-in parties as we were waiting to check in and then refused to honor our reservation. I asked them to call us when a table opened up and nothing. I get that you dont want to say no to people who walk up, but there is a reason that people reserve tables at restaurants on Friday nights. So book at your own risk, 50-50 they tell you to get lost.
Tiny gem in the giant apple! A respite from some of the grande eateries in NYC. Much attention to detail with meticulous execution of small plates. The chef knocked each one out of the park! Great wine selection as well. A must try but only with your most special friend or friends!
Ive been going to the Basque Country every year since 2016 until the pandemic hit, and I needed the Basques and their food back in my life. Haizea is the perfect Basque restaurant to experience this in. Chef Mikel de Luis is a treasure and the work hes put into the restaurant even during a pandemic is awe-inspiring. The food is incredible, and its clear he puts all his lives for food and his culture into it. Highly recommend! Eskerrik asko esperientziagatik!
Fresh innovative food that arrives to its destination in great condition. spectacular Calamar Sandwich; best Octopus ever with addictive Mojo Picon; crunchy fabulous duck and wild mushroom fideua, light airy yet crispy croquettes: tasty Paella, outstanding suckling pig, perfect tortilla espanola.
I stopped at this little Basque place located on Sullivan Street, technically in Soho I think. Well, its very close to Houston Street. It is a narrow place, but very cozy, decorated with great care. The site evokes the atmosphere of txoko, which is the purpose of the owner, Mikel. He has made a strong bet at a very difficult time. I intend to return soon. I encourage everyone to visit the site.
The truth is a place to repeat, it was spectacular, they made us feel at home, the attention of both the owner and the waiter who was from Ecuador was impressive, we went with a baby and they solved everything for us, it is difficult to find this quality of people in NY, I left with the best impression of the city thanks to this place. Thank you

2022-05-03Cute, quaint little restaurant. The food is beautiful but wasn’t that great. Things were rather bland. The staff and service made up for that tho. The owner, Migel, was on site and extremely hospitable. Oysters and lobster appetizers were on the house and Miguel also threw in treats for the road. We felt very welcomed and at home here. Great vibes!

2022-05-27This was our first time having Basque cuisine. We had the octupus, sausage and iberico toast, duck, and a dessert I forgot the name of. Every course was amazing. The chef even gave us some personal attention. It was our best dining experience in New York on our current trip so far.

2021-09-04Adorable! Beautiful food, friendly staff, cute decor – and tasty. Classic regional tapas, beautifully presented, and nice Spanish beverages. Its small inside, a bit expensive (dishes add up), and taste, while fine, is not as amazing as the appearance, but overall a lovely option – a gem!

2022-04-03Went here on a Friday night as a walk in and it was quiet so we were seated which we were grateful for... However something was off about the place. We sat in a back room which looked like it was for lessons, no issue but it was extremely small and the seating was uncomfortable. We listened to the ice fridge make ice for most of the meal. The staff seemed really overwhelmed which was confusing as it was quiet. The complimentary canape entree was welcome and delicious. Most of the wine menu was unavailable though which was weird. When ordering I asked the size of the dishes and was told they were all small, the black rice maybe for two. It was actually all quite large generous serves - which is a positive but it was like our server didnt even know the menu and meant we over ordered by a lot. We ended up therefore ordering an extra appetizer which I didnt really like and at the end cancelling a main while we waited. It took a very long time for dishes to come out but I think thats because they come out one at a time which we werent really informed this would be the style. The food was pretty tasty if you are a seafood lover!

2021-12-12This deserves absolutely no stars. In fact, I am owed stars for showing up and interacting with the despicable piece of trash that is the owner of this restaurant. My party reserved a private room a month in advance. Upon arrival we’re told that another party was placed in that room last minute. We have email proof of our reservation and confirmed it via phone two days in advance. The owner and a majority of the wait staff were extremely hostile and unapologetic. The owner said his own wife who confirmed our reservation was bad at her job. I’ve never had an experience in New York this unpleasant. Avoid at all costs. The city is full of beautiful and delicious restaurants more deserving of your hard earned money.

2021-09-12I really wanted to like this place. The owner seemed cool but we showed up at 8 for an 8 PM reservation and weren’t seated until 830. We were seated in the dish washing room. It’s like hibachi, but instead of watching someone cook, you watch someone was dishes. We ordered a bunch of dishes and got 1 and it was solid. Good wine too. We waited almost 2 hours and never got another dish. The server apologized a lot and was friendly. Maybe just growing pains, but it wasn’t a good experience.

2021-06-25Nice employees. Fun place to eat at. The baby clams and the octopus were to die for!!! The cheese cake was a turndown. The berries weren’t fresh. One raspberry had mold on it. Ugh.

2021-07-25Presentation and environment is better than the food itself. Not much impressed by most dishes, ink rice are too salty and beef tartare is flavorless. Appreciate the free snack offered when seated tho

2020-12-31Absolutely delicious, must try! The food was so flavorful. We enjoyed croquettes, asparagus, octopus, lamb chops and paella. Each dish was more flavorful than the previous. The service was attentive while taking necessary covid precautions. The owner stopped out to check on us a few times and you can just tell he cares so much about each dish and your experience. And the outdoor set up is very festive and warm for the winter!Stop by or order to go, you will not regret it!
