We had the most delicious pot pie and Henning was gracious and accommodating for our large fundraiser comedy show that I produced there. I will definitely be producing more events there if he’ll have me. But either way, you can bet your bottom dollar that I will be a regular diner.
Amazing restaurant. Really top notch food, could compete at the highest level. Best steak I’ve had in a long time, all local high quality ingredients everything is handmade. I really can say enough good things about this place. We drove in late from the city and they treated us like family. Adding this place to my favorites list.
Phenomenal. My only issue with our experience is the lighting. The restaurant ambiance is warm and low lit, but it still doesnt hinder the rating. We had a party of 4 adults and one child (18months). The staff was friendly and welcoming with the child. Our party ordered the Mac and Cheese as an appitizer, Steak Diane, Hungarian Goulash and Grilled Skirt Steak. Each item was beautifully prepared, cooked to perfection and delicious. Only one plate went unfinished due to the size (Hungarian Goulash).Pop-ups were served rather than rolls while waiting with a delicious radish butter, along with all glasses on the table being filled with water (a very nice addition I wish more restaurants would do). Will be back again without a doubt.
Been a while since being here with my family and friends and my girlfriend but we all ate the ceaser salads and the trout sushi to start. For dinner we had the chicken dishes and the steak both were cooked perfectly. The waitress was not only prompt and professional but was good fun too . The atmosphere has a very relaxing feel to it that I have not found anywhere else. Cant complain about the dessert either the creme Brule and chocolate souffle are excellent. Definitely worth stopping by both at night for the dinner service and during the day downstairs for the excellent deli food. Coming back as soon as I can find the time. Well done on everything.
Steak Diane is my favorite dish and Hennings Local makes it just right! They also make their own sodas! I love the ginger soda. I have also tried the pomegranate and its good too! It is a beautiful restaurant. I would love to have a party there. I might have to do just that!
Third maybe fourth time I have been here. Will not be the last. This restaurant sits above a gas station and Cafe (which is also amazing) and boasts amazing food across the menu. Start off with a handcrafted cocktail and the pop overs they bring to every table. As the radish butter melts on your pop over peruse the menu. It is updated every so often but you can always find a great steak, trout, or goulash that will knock your socks off! One thing my table noticed that seemed off was a lack of chicken on the menu other than the chicken liver pate appetizer. If you are a chicken dish lover just check out the menu before arriving. I am sure that chicken will arrive on the menu at some point but it wasnt as of last Saturday.
Food was excellent! Well prepared and perfect portion sizes (plenty of food-we brought home a doggie bag)! Was more than willing to accommodate my food allergy. Staff was very attentive, yet not over bearing. There were only two down sides: we were not informed when we made the reservations that it would be a set menu that evening (for Valentines day): and the entrance was very slushy and wet-it could have been cleared a little better (especially when older or less agile guests could easily slip & fall). Over all, great experience!
The food deserves a 4/5 with some dishes even being 5/5. The problem is a poorly trained, yet mostly friendly, wait staff. My dad ordered a stout and received a blond beer. My drink took at least 30 minutes with multiple reminders to our waitress. After sitting for an hour after ordering the hostess explained to us that the ticket for our order failed to print and that our order would come out shortly. The restaurant seems to be poorly managed, which is a shame because the food is very good. We will not return.
This guy can cook. I ordered a handful of items - steak, salmon, pork belly, chicken chorizo, farro, salad, and hummus - through his website (the restaurant is open Friday-Sunday for take-out) and enjoyed everything. The food is local, fresh, and not pretentious. If youre in the Catskills, this is a worthwhile stop.
I want to first say that knowing New Year’s Eve to be a challenge for dinner I still wanted to bring our friends to one of our favorite places . Rebecca was beyond friendly, informative and fun . The food is always such a great surprise but I have to say the portions were seriously small , I gave my girlfriends husband my filet . The woman behind us leaned in and said last year you gave the whole steak ! I would have also thought appropriate a glass of complimentary champagne . We arrived at 9 left at 10:30 and had cocktails and additional food at home . This is not a negative review just a few suggestions . We love your bartenders , waitstaff and chef , I think we will just bring them back to truly enjoy all you have to offer Without It being a holiday affair . Happy new year
I HAVE TO SAY I EAT ALL OVER AND SOME FANCY STUFF AND SOME OK PLACEC, BUT THIS PLACE IS LIKE A TOP TEN ZAGET RESTAURANT IN THNE MIDDLE OF NOWHERE. GREAT FOOD, GOOD SERVICE AND THE CHECK WAS CRAZY LOW. YOU GUYS HAVE A GREAT PLACE WE WILL BE BACK EVEN ITS A 3 HOUR RIDE....
Wow. Foodies rejoice. We have been summering up here for 26 years and we have never come across a restaurant even remotely this good so far from the city. The Fat Lady Cafe and Benji & Jakes are nice, and have good food, but this place could easily be found in Red Hook or Loisaida. The food was phenomenal, locally sourced and perfectly prepared. Portions were huge and everything was clearly made fresh to order. Our only complaint was that the menu was limited - we wanted more appetizer choices. The ambiance is serene and low key without feeling low class. The service was friendly and the staff was knowledgeable. Wow, just wow.
Been coming here for years. Every meal is 5 stars in my opinion. Love the steak diane, always my fav. Very homey and cozy meals, quiet and consistent. Great to have a place like this in such a culinary deficient area especially in the winter when so many restaurants close. Beautiful dining room as well.
The food is solid and enjoyable. The place is very snooty. They are very serious about the no substitutions rule which is literally insane. Some of the best restaurants will bend over backwards to make substitutions (think 11 Madison Park) but this place is bending. Also its incredibly slow. Like very very slow. The pop overs are good. The Mac and cheese is yummy. And the filet mignon was cooked as ordered.
My wife and I had dinner here and had a delightful experience. We were seated outside with a view of the pond and running brook. Service was prompt and friendly. I ordered the roasted chicken while my wife had the trout a’ la norwegienne. Both dishes were tasty and well-prepared. We finished out with creme brulee and coffee. Highly recommend.
Do not show up without reservations!! We did and we were seated at a very tall, uncomfortable bar table. If you are a tall person, this is not an issue, but I am only 5 feet tall. There was a long wait for our food to arrive, but that was because the restaurant was full. When it did arrive, it was absolutely delicious. The only other problem was partly my fault, having read the reviews I adhered to their no substitution rule and did not ask them to switch out the horseradish mash for a different one. As it happens, they would have exchanged it. This review started at 3 stars, but the host was kind enough to inquire about our experience and was very apologetic.
We live nearby. First time here. Good food, but omg a long wait for our entrees; like over an hour! $16 for a cheeseburger -- one of the least expensive entrees. Apologies offered; drinks paid for, but disappointed overall. You only get one chance to make a first impression.
Have eaten here twice in the past two years. Easily the best restaurant I have tried in the region. Ambience is great, staff friendly and the food excellent. Compared to the other high end places around that area the prices are reasonable. Looking forward to going back in November. Yum!
Ambience was cute although sound reverberated a lot in the room. Twigs and antlers twined on chandeliers was a bit unusual for decor. Our main complaint is the chefs rigidity about no substitutions, even down to swapping one flavored mashed potato for another. Especially given the servers explanation that its just too hard for kitchen staff to read the ticket if there are substitutions, slowing down service. Aside from this major limitation, especially since favors like horseradish and Gorgonzola are not things everyone cares for, the food was overall mediocre and not worth the hefty bill. We wont be returning.
Heard good things about this restaurant so we wanted to try it. Traveled a long way, service was poor, found hair in my food (which could have came from the woman with the long wiry hair flying all over, which should be tied back when you are serving food). My wife enjoyed her dinner, but I could not enjoy mine!
Sorry. We walked out when we seen the menu. Be sure to check it. What happened? The trout dishes didnt even sound appetizing for the price. They need at least three more choices and something simple. I guess everything is a la carte? They dont even tell you what comes with the twenty dollar entree. Tons of beef. Youd had better me a big red meat eater. We are not. We were going for fish and good appetizers and hopefullyto get something for the money. We were big fans of the Eldred Preserve, used to go at least twice a season. Shame.
If pleasing the customer is the goal for success in a good restaurant, Hennings is failing miserably. When I asked if I could have the other potato offering on the menu rather then the mashed, the answer was no and a person who said he was the manager arrived at our table and proceeded to give us a bizarre and illogical explanation. He actually said the kitchen is too small to switch the potatoes from one plate to another (even though they are both prepared and on the menu). We said ok. When our plates come, I will switch potatoes with my friend. He said he would put the mashed on a separate plate to make it easier. However, there was a $6 charge on our check which he didnt mention. On a previous visit, I was told that I could not have fewer fingerlings and more kale because, kale is too expensive. Huh? One wonders if this dimwit is managing or sabotaging the restaurant, or both? - Managing to sabotage.
Hennings Local is simply one of the best restaurants for miles around. Henning sources locally grown vegetables, fish from nearby hatcheries, and poultry, lamb, beef and pork from local farms. He crafts an ever-changing menu of the freshest ingredients, and every meal Ive had there rivals some of the best farm-to-table restaurants in Manhattan. The ambience of the restaurant is warm and cozy during the winter, and bustling with locals and visitors to Sullivan County in the summer time. Hennings has quickly become a great place to meet people in the area and share stories of how we all ended up at such a fine restaurant.Meal highlights include the roasted chicken, the double center cut filet mignon, a myriad of trout dishes, and a delectable array of homemade deserts and ice cream. If you are looking for a wonderful meal to remember, Hennings Local will not disappoint.
It would have been nice to know that they had moved their location. After driving to the Eldred location I was able to find their website and learned of the new address and drove to it. Only to find that they were having a private party that evening and were not open to the public. When you have a website things like this should be posted so people like myself do not make the journey for no reason.

2021-11-22I just heard about this restaurant a couple of weeks ago on Facebook, and I was waiting to try it. I thought everything was excellent.... nice waitstaff, beautiful ambience, generous portions, good drinks, everything was very tasty and plated nicely. When you stop and realize where the place is..... out in the middle of Cochecton.... I would even add a few more stars. The choices for fine dining in this area are slim, and this is a gem. Looking forward to going back again soon!

2021-12-25We have gone here 3 times. We enjoyed the first dinner. We feel all because it is a farm to table, you can have different vegetables and potatoes. The same were served every time. Specials would help too. The menu gets boring.

2022-05-23Asked for my burger cooked medium. It came out raw. I sent it back and by the time it came back out my friend was done eating. Nothing on bill was comped and no discount was offered. Burger was $22 and they couldn’t cook it right. LOL

2021-10-16This meal was sensational. As others have said, the building is baffling, sitting on top of a gas station in the middle of nowhere but upscale casual inside with really lovely decor and vibe. I had the burger, which may be one of the best if my life - cooked perfectly with an amazing crisp on the outside, the meat was flavorful and the sauce was a perfect match. And then the fries! I have no idea how they made the fries so good. My husband had the rack of lamb with this incredible, unusual sauce on it. We will absolutely be coming back here when we are in the area.

2021-07-04An AMAZING meal. Such a beautiful restaurant juxtaposed with a gas station. My boyfriend and I both agreed it was the best food wed had out in a very long time. We started with the trout appetizer (have never had it raw but it was fresh and light. I had lamb which was cooked to perfection, he had the coffee rubbed trout which had a flavor unlike anything wed ever had and was absolutely delicious. You MUST get a side of mashed potatoes!! Be sure to try one of their homemade sodas - I had juniper which was refreshing. We were so full that we didnt dare try dessert although we wanted to. While there are a number of restaurants to try in the area, you do NOT want to miss eating here. We will absolutely be back and wish we lived closer!!

2018-12-08Awesome restaurant with superbly prepared food and warm friendly service. Not the easiest place to find, but so we’ll worth the trip!Start off with steaming hot popovers and a well conceived menu and many craft cocktails to start things off!

2021-07-25Sara was an incredible server. The drinks were amazing, unique, and well executed! Food was the best we’ve ever eaten. Celebrated my best friend’s bachelorette party here. We had the Filet Mignon Diane, Sesame trout, duck, all of it. Every single bite was an experience. Stop messing around… just eat here.
