Our son is a current student at HWS and has just finished his freshman year. HE LOVES IT! The faculty are highly supportive and engaged with the students. The style of education is not only highly academic, but also requires students to collaborate on projects both within the classroom environment and with the community of Geneva, NY, thus mimicking real job market skills. HWS has a guaranteed internship program that includes a stipend for any student who finds an unpaid internship, because they feel so strongly about gaining work experience and do not want students to have to reject offers simply because they need an internship that generates an income. Our son says that the party scene is mostly confined to the weekend and that fraternities are not the major source for socializing, rather the teams and social clubs which form a more responsible social bond. HWS is suitable for students who wish to be involved. The president of HWS was the former head of the Peace Corp under Clinton. The college reflects his tremendous guidance. Im just disappointed that the NYT decided to embellish a sad story that is far to common on campuses across the country.
I think the problem with a lot of these reviews are that they are written by people who mention almost solely the NY Times rape victim article; which definitely requires attention, of course, but not many of these people seem to have attended this school or mention its numerous other merits. This school sits on a beautiful campus with a lake (used not only for swimming and sailing, but also for scientific class field trips), is amazingly (and even Ill admit surprisingly) diverse, and has some of the most dedicated and supportive professors. I was nervous after reading a lot of these reviews when I originally went to this college, as 1. a small white girl, 2. shy vegetarian with multiple tattoos, and 3. a double major in Environmental Science and Asian Studies, but I never shouldve doubted HWS. I have met amazing people, some of whom have overcome horrible pasts and obstacles, and others who have never been exposed to such tragedies. No matter their pasts or differences, they find themselves on common ground with similar passion for their studies, and most importantly, their knowledge of their impact on the future/each other.Basically what Im trying to say is that to anyone feeling anxious about this school. or judging it solely by their recent NY Times coverage, think twice. This school is one of the most community services/charity orientated Ive ever seen, full of people from inner cities and Cape Cod beach-houses, all of whom support not only one another, but also their passions and futures.
Focusing largely on appearances and saving face, it fails to advocate for its students once theyve agreed to attend. This past year, HWS revealed itself to be particularly problematic:••They mishandled a case against a freshman girl who was raped by 3 football players. They held the judicial panel before the results of the rape kit were ready. They published her name in a email to the entire school, while the accused went unmentioned and were cleared of all charges.••An employee stole 50,000 dollars from the school••Someone set fires on the third floor of one of the freshman dorms. Three times. During finals week.••A student broke his neck while drunk at a frat. He was left outside a bluelight station in the snow. This frat was kicked off campus, but they bought the house from the school and operate outside the schools influence. It is notorious for cocaine, roofies, and rape. It went uninvestigated.••Promised to establish an LGBT studies major, but did not offer tenure to professor who would have made it possible..... Seriously. Dont go here.
After graduation you can expect $8 to $11 with lots of debt if you choose fluff majors. Choose science, Pre Med, engineering or nursing or do not go. You will be better off. Many college degrees are worthless. Do not find out the hard way and be in debt up to your butt.

2022-01-20Neo Gothic, Ivy covered halls full of rich ceremonial traditions preserved by an empathetic administration with an impressive network of supportive alumni who continue to value their affiliation and time spent at the prestigious colleges of Hobart & William Smith. The President is an inspiring and impressive person who has demonstrated her prioritization of fostering academic exploration, independent and critical thinking, diversity of thought, international partnerships with ancient institutions abroad and the management and preservation of the high esteem of the colleges.

2021-11-15School is amazing. Campus is wide open . Fairly small campus and could do more for the community and students. Should integrate community and service to the community. Seems like a separate entity from the city it is in. Reminds me of a cheap Fordham university. They also seemed separated from the bronx.

2021-06-25We live near these great colleges. Pre-pandemic we attended sports, student plays and performances and walked in their field house. The campus is beautiful and essential to the health of Geneva. If our grown children were of college age I would send them here in a heartbeat.

2020-09-26We loved our visit with our daughter whom is seriously considering HWS for the Fall of 2021. Campus was especially beautiful this time of year (early Fall). Our tour guide Michael was very well versed and articulate and the admissions crew (Jessica and others) were very knowledgeable and helpful. The town of Geneva is a great college town and being right on Lake Seneca is a huge bonus. Absolutely visit if you are even considering applying.

2020-10-23A truly special place. I now work for a college counseling company, and with every day I realize more and more how special and incredible HWS is and how lucky I am to have gone here. Happy to now be able to hire HWS grads to work for us - knowing that they are so well prepared. I would give this place a million stars if I could! In regards to some negative reviews about a situation that happened years ago and was written about - things are not always as they seem, my friends 🙂

2016-04-09Awesome school delivering a first rate education that equips students to accomplish just about anything they desire. Hobart William Smith students can hold their own against and often are better thinkers than many of the brand name got to get in colleges. The school offers Intimate classes with real professors focused on teaching. Very safe and welcoming environment. Not a fan of the Greek system, but it is not a dominant presence. I would send my child there in a New York second.

2014-11-11One of the many great things about Hobart is its laser beam focus on teaching critical thinking; something none of the reviewers giving one star seem to have in any abundance. I went to Hobart in the 80s and I can attest that this is a very tight nit school where people care deeply about everyones well being. The whole purpose behind having a coordinate college system with separate woman and mens colleges is to ensure a separate strong voice for womans issues and concerns. There are numerous organizations that provide resources to woman if something as tragic as this occurs. But read the article again folks. What the States Attorney said is that there is nothing to prosecute, meaning that, in his expert opinion with all the facts you dont have, there was no crime. A horrible embarrassing tragedy, yes. Poorly handled from a public relations perspective, yes. But please think for a moment. That bit about a winning football program blinding the administration to justice? Really? I know youve never seen Hobart on TV, because there is no TV contract. The stadium is smaller than many high school stadiums. Hobart is a very small division three school - so, no big money and no profit motive. I have two daughters and I hope they will get into the William Smith classes of 25 and 26 because I know what a great education it provides and what a caring place it is.

2014-08-20HWS is a fantastic institution on both the social and academic level. As a student who has been there through the rape scandal, I can say that I am disappointed to see how much that has clouded the image of the school. While there certainly were errors made on the administrations part - the New York Times article was exaggerated. I, and most of my fellow students, have had both support and success during our time on campus. I would send my son or daughter here in a heartbeat. The small size makes relations with professors and the administration very close - it is not every school where the president is likely to know you by name. Since my first year, the resources provided have given me opportunities I never would have expected. I have never regretted my choice to come here.

2018-04-10As a Hobart alum, I can conclusively say that being at HWS is the best part of my life so far. I learned so much about adulthood here. The campus is so supportive, everyone really wants to help you. The ARTH department is one of the best groups of people Ive ever worked with; the MDSC department not so much but Prof. Burditt is fantastic. I miss HWS every day, and if youre considering coming here despite the relative nowhere of its location, I promise its worth it.
