We adopted our Chihuahua mix Eva in March. The process was very easy, and Eva’s foster parents shared a lot of helpful information about our new pup. Eva was already microchipped, vaccinated, and spayed. We had her polished on her potty skills within 2 weeks. Eva has completed our family and Homeward Bound was a pleasure to work with.
We had a great experience at Homeward Bound. They obviously love the dogs and care about the homes the dogs are adopted to. The volunteers were friendly and helpful. And the blanket we were given to take home has been a comfort to our puppy since she warmed her way into our lives. Thank you.
It was just coincidence that we chose to adopt Ralphie, even though my name is so close to what they called him. He had apparently been through so much trauma that we didnt rename him. He adapted to our house layout quite quickly, and, allowing for the occasional accident, he knows to head for the back door so he can go out into our yard. Were glad that we were able to give him a new home where hes loved and cared for.
Yes, Homeward Bound is picky. They spend a lot of time and energy taking care of these pups and they want to make sure they go to good homes. If you have a veterinarian who knows that you take care of your current/previous animals then you shouldnt have a problem. The application is lengthy and specific but probably no worse than other rescues. The interview did take a while on adoption day and it was a little chaotic but there were many people there to adopt and the volunteers were working as fast as they could.I fell in love with Bud the moment I saw him. At 15 weeks he was obviously well cared for and was well on his way to being potty trained. His foster dad was happy to tell me all about Bud and gave me his contact info should I have any questions.I am very happy with the overall experience and would highly recommend Homeward Bound!
We adopted a lab puppy from Homeward Bound 15 years ago. When he passed away in January we again looked to Homeward Bound for another fur baby. This time we were looking for a smaller dog and one older than 1 year old. We attended one clinic in March and then Covid 19 closed everything and the available dogs began scarce. We were interested in several dogs over 4 months but dogs were being adopted very quickly. The foster volunteers were all happy to tell you about the dog you are interested in and made sure the dog was the right fit for your home. In July, we were finally able to adopt a one year old beagle terrier mix. She is a great fit for our home. I thank Homeward Bound and all the volunteers for the effort they expend making sure each dog finds the best home.
Homeward Bound is a great pet rescue group who makes sure to the rescue animals go to good homes. They provide good support during the adoption process. They do a great job trying to rescue as many animals as possible. The only reason I didn’t give 5 stars was because of an incident that began with my puppy while he was at the foster parent’s, the fallout I had to deal with after, and the short term medical problems my puppy had to go through. It was an innocent error made by the foster and a series of unfortunate dominos that followed. However, I appreciate and respect the difficult job of the rescuers and fosters who are all volunteering their time and energy to helping innocent abandoned animals and I don’t blame them for the situation.Even with the unique and unfortunate situation I experienced, I would still recommend Homeward Bound. They are committed to the animals and for me that’s number one.
My partner and I adopted a puppy from Homeward Bound in September and had a very positive experience. Most of my communication was with his foster who was very friendly and helpful. They took their time finding the right homes for these puppies and were serious about potential adopters having the relevant breed experience which I appreciated. I have fostered and adopted from other rescues and I was happy with my experience with Homeward Bound.
After losing our beloved husky to cancer earlier this year, my husband and I decided to adopt a rescue dog. We attempted to work with a few rescues in the area but many were non responsive and some were just rude. Homeward Bound was amazing! Mind you it was during the pandemic and they werent running clinics. We met up with a couple of the foster families to meet the dogs they were hosting. It took a few meets before we found the right match for us and all of the volunteers were incredibly patient and understanding. Our pup, Dax, has been with us for a few minths now. He is a super sweet boy and a great fit for us. Months later, the folks at HBR are still great at answering questions and offering support. I would recommend this rescue to anyone serious about expanding their family.
During quarantine we had lost our beloved pup of 15 years and our other dog was taking it hard. I knew I wanted to adopt another older dog and so I began my search on Petfinder which brought us to our current cuddly girl Emmie.Homeward Bound was super descriptive about all their pets personalities and took the time to update anything they learned about their dogs while they lived in the care of their fosters. I knew I wanted an older dog who was just as much of a couch potato as my current rescue. They were spot on with Emmie.I filled out an extensive reference form and got a call back to be interviewed in no time. From there I was put in contact with Emmies foster parents and was able to request pictures and ask as many questions as I needed. In a weeks time we all met up at a dog park for everyone to meet. It was important that my current rescue and Emmie got along. They hit it off and from there it was a matter of signing a couple of forms and getting the leash.Emmies papers came equipped with where she was rescued and a full medical history. Homeward bound was very strict about getting her microchip registered as well as getting her licensed through the city in which we live. Her papers came with a list of resources in case we encountered any behavioral issues or otherwise. The experience was truly a great one and I highly recommend this rescue to anyone looking for the perfect addition to their family!
We adopted a young dog from Homeward Bound Rescue in March 2021. He was healthy, fully caught up on vaccinations, neutered, and well taken care of. We received a packet of his medical history, his microchip info, and tips on new puppy ownership. We visited a volunteers foster home, (which was clean and welcoming), to pick him up. 10/10 would recommend!
I had a good experience with Homeward Bound, and am giving 5 stars based on my own experience. I am a bit concerned about some of the negative reviews Ive seen on the site. I can only imagine that its a difficult process matching these beautiful dogs with new homes. I think the organization has every right to set high standards for adoption, especially if theyre successful in placing of of the dogs that they take in. Its something that the folks who run this organization truly value, and its reflected in extensive attention they give to vetting possible adoptions. Perhaps as a matter of customer service orientation, the values of the organization, and the specific expectations such as annual vet visits can be stated up front (and perhaps it is already; I dont recall), so folks who dont meet the organizations expectations can look elsewhere (and learn in the process)? That way theres care given to the good wishes that many potential adopters bring to the process, as well as the dedicated staff and volunteers who make this organization what it is. Wishing everyone well in this journey. I was incredibly lucky in bringing Maya in to my home.
They are all truly amazing people and really care about each and every dog. They make sure that the dogs are placed in the perfect home for them. I have recently adopted a gorgeous dog that fits amazing with my family and myself. I was getting frustrated filling out so many applications for different rescues (I was approved but the dogs I wanted always got swooped up), then I learned all that happened so I could be lucky enough to get this beautiful girl I have now. She is a smart and I couldn’t be happier! No complaints! Love them!
We adopted a puppy at the end of January 2021 after waiting many months for one to become available. The foster, Rob, went above and beyond when he agreed to keep our puppy an extra 2 weeks after my husband tested positive for COVID 19. We were in isolation and quarantine so we could not go out to meet the pup yet, even though that would have been such a wonderful time to have started out with him. Not only did Rob break the rules because they are not supposed to hold a pup for anyone, but he continued to train him so we picked up a totally housebroken, crate trained puppy. And the extra fun thing was that he had an adult dog of his own that looked just like our puppy! We are thrilled to finally have this pup and are thankful to Homeward Bound for everything they do to rescue pups and connect them with new owners. We also appreciate the the microchip, neutering, great collar, and wealth of information and recommendations to get us started. I highly recommend Homeward Bound!
We recently adopted through Homeward Bound and could not be happier. Kona (formally Denise) is such an even tempered, social dog. Exactly what we were looking for. The agency and the family who fostered her did an amazing job. We would totally recommend adopting through Homeward Bound.
We adopted our puppy Roxy (previously Birdie) about a month ago. Everyone that we had the pleasure of speaking with throughout the whole process were wonderful. They kept working with us until we found a great fit for our family! I know that if I come up with any questions now or in the future I would feel comfortable and confident reaching out to any of their representatives.
Thank you Homeward Bound Dog Rescue-and especially Amy (foster mom)-for all you do to save dogs and for allowing me to adopt another puppy from your organization. Your prompt attention to my application, quick contact by foster mom, photos shared of puppy and the clear love/security you give to dogs in your care is so greatly appreciated. I’m so glad there are organizations like yours around to helpsave such wonderful creatures and find them their forever home.
We currently have two Homeward Bound pups in our family - and were so glad we have them!! Homeward Bound made sure that our pups were the best fit for us. All of their dogs are fostered until they find their forever homes, so the volunteers literally put their everything into the whole process! If youre thinking about adopting a new furry family member, be sure to get your application in now! I would ABSOLUTELY recommend Homeward Bound to help you find them!
I have always been a huge believer of adopting from a shelter instead of buying from a breeder. I applied to this rescue looking for a high-energy companion for my border collie. I never heard back from them. I was waiting for some sort of attempt to get in contact with me in order to set up an interview or clarify anything that was on my application. They never even attempted to get to know me as a person or learn about how I care for my pets. I am very active with my dog, bringing him for walks, hikes, and car rides, in addition to, playing ball with him every day. I buy only the best pet supplies. I could’ve and would’ve provided an excellent, loving home for any animal I adopted. I waited for a month and messaged them on Facebook about the status of my application and their responses were very short, borderline rude. In addition, I encouraged another individual to adopt through them instead of buying from a breeder, and he never heard back from them either. I understand having a screening process for adoption, but when you don’t even get back to the person, how do you expect animals to get adopted?
I really wanted to like this rescue. But it just didnt work for me.Homeward Bound does have what is probably the largest variety of dogs in the area. If youre looking for a dog and dont have any other animals or requirements that your new family member needs to meet, it may work out for you. However, it became painfully obvious that the rescue itself doesnt really know any of the animals. Theyre more interested in getting the dogs adopted than they are with matching dogs to the right families.A lot of your experience will probably depend on who the dogs foster is. While some of the fosters may be completely forthright about the dogs needs, others seem to gloss things over just to get them placed. We ended up in a completely unworkable situation because our foster lied to us about two of the most important factors in our decision making. It was only after we signed the adoption papers that they completely changed their story. If we had known all of the information upfront instead of having issues misrepresented to us, we absolutely would not have adopted him. It all resulted in a whole lot of heartbreak for us and placing the dog in a situation that was absolutely not the right one for him. And it could have been avoided if the rescue spent a little more time making sure each home is the right fit. After all, dogs are all individuals with their own needs, and some need more specific homes than others to truly thrive.
I’m not one to put out a review on anything but I feel like this should be said for those eagerly looking to grow their family by adding a fur baby addition. I took my time to carefully read through all the adoption information on their website so I was taking all the correct steps and had a good chance of adopting a puppy. I filled out my first application and got an email not much time after which made me so excited. I emailed back answering all their questions but then never heard back. About a month later I filled out another application. I got an email shortly after that. I again, answered all their questions. Days went by and nothing. So I emailed them in a very professional manner explaining I’m very serious about adopting and would love to adopt from them. I got an email soon after that with another question in which I answered. Never heard back and it’s been some time now. I’m very disappointed if this is the way they work. Be real with people. If their application was denied then tell them especially if they’re showing such interest. I’ve seen several reviews with the same sorta issues. Just please keep these reviews in mind so if something similar happens to you, it’s not so unexpected but it is still a little heartbreaking especially to those family’s who are so excited about growing their family’s. Thanks
I was impressed by how organized and how thorough they were. You know the dogs in their care are safe and are bound to go to a very good home matched to their needs. The extensive application and interview are necessary to make sure the already traumatized pups dont end up having to be rehomed AGAIN. And if you cant afford the very reasonable adoption fee, then you cant afford a dog.
This is a rescue who cares about all of their animals, far beyond when theyve left for their furever homes. The amount of professionalism, love and support that goes in these animals and the organization is unparalleled elsewhere. Anyone who chooses to work with them will not regret it!
I appreciated the in-depth application process and screening, it was clear to me that my interest in adopting wasn’t going to out weigh the best interest of a dog. We were matched with the perfect dog! The foster mom took care to share with us how our little guy had been doing in her home and the follow-up we received after the adoption further supported how much this organization cares for the animals they work with.
I went for the first time last Saturday. I had a great experience. I decided to volunteer and adopt. They had all ages, all sizes. I love the fact that they are not in a shelter. If not adopted, they go home for the week with a foster. The foster can work on training and evaluate the dog/pup for adoption. Every person I met has a true love for dogs. Everyone was very friendly and helpful.
We adopted Beau now named Sam from homeward bounds in September after losing our sweet Cocoa after almost 16yrs in August. We fell in love with Sam instantly, he’s the most well behaved puppy. He will be celebrating his 6 month birthday in a few short weeks. He’s well adjusted to his forever home and we can’t wait to watch him grow in to a handsome dog. Oh I almost forgot he has a big brother Cody that absolutely loves his little brother. Thank you homeward bounds for giving us Sam and for mending our broken hearts. No dog will ever replace our beloved Cocoa but Sam definitely has made our home full again with lots of laughs and love..
My husband and I were looking for a companion for our 4 year old Chow. Ellie was our baby but had grown bored and needed a sibling. We searched and saw Teo on Steve Caparizzo Pet Connection and immediately fell in love!! Homeward Bound wanted a family who had experience with chows previously as they can be aggressive. We went through several phone interviews with volunteers at the rescue. They were very thorough and professional. We hadn’t ever adopted a dog from a rescue and they were all very informative about the process. We met Teo with his foster mom Alyssa and we were sold! He is the sweetest boy. He is so playful and loving. He transitioned very quickly and became such a big part of our family. He is so well behaved and wonderful which I’m sure is a direct result of the kindness and dedication from the staff at Homeward Bound. I would recommend them to anyone looking for a pet!
Homeward Bound gave our family the best gift in the world, our loving dog! We had never adopted a dog before this so we didn’t know what to expect. We saw our pup on petfinder and reached out to this shelter right away. They were so helpful, professional and they knew she was the perfect match for us!
Nothing but positive reviews for this organization. We got our rescue,Harold, at the end of July and he quickly became a member of our family. Poor guy was so scared and skittish. His foster, Nick, delivered him (due to Covid-19 restrictions) and stayed long enough to make sure we were a good match. Homeward Bound answered all of our questions and made the adoption go very smoothly! I truly believe he got a great start with Homeward Bound!
We recently adopted our new family member Willow. We were nervous the whole process would be drawn out and difficult. Terry and Barbara were great to work with and quickly got the ball rolling when we found the pup we were interested in. She was already being well cared for and loved until we became her forever home.If you and your family our looking for a new fur baby, I highly suggest looking at Homeward Bound first!!
This is the second rescue from Homeward Bound. Absolutely the best dogs I’ve ever had. My dog’s foster mom was incredible!!!!! She had the basic training down. I was expecting to start from scratch but the time and effort Terri put in with my dog is just amazing. I would recommend Homeward in a heartbeat. Hands down the best!!!!
I am without words right now. We recently lost our dog of 13 years and missing him so much we decided to look into adopting another dog. I decided to apply for adoption in case I found a dog to adopt however was denied because although my dog had all his vaccinations he did not have annual checkups. He was a very healthy, happy amazing dog and if he needed we brought him to the vet. I have raised 4 kids and we treated our dog as part of our family. Yet they told me I was not a good candidate for adoption. I spent over 2,000 in one day to try and save him not to mention the emotional pain we all went through when he didn’t come home. I was trying to do the right thing by adopting and not buying a dog however apparently this organization without even a home visit or meeting me can make such a decision. I know at least 2 people who were approved who had no previous pet experience and lived in an apartment. I have a nice home with a great fenced yard and much love to give. Very very poor organization.
We adopted a puppy from homeward bound back in April. We were impressed with the professionalism of the organization and it was clear that our little guy was cared for really well by the fostering households prior to him coming to us. I cant recommend them highly enough!
Homeward Bound is a great organization. We have adopted three puppies from them over the past 11 years and couldnt be happier. The foster parents really do a great job with the puppies/dogs. The folks at the adoption clinics offer helpful information and really try to help find your perfect mate. We highly recommend Homeward Bound!
I cant t express how happy my wife and I are with our experience at HB. Terri and Sarah, the two members of the organization that I interacted with were wonderful, kind and understanding of our recent past with a dog.Terri was wonderful in her screening questions, kind and gentle. Sarah, the foster mom, was wonderful and careful to make sure that our new puppy, Scout, would get along well with our other dog, Lt. Starbuck. I had a great experience with a great organization. Scout is growing into a wonderful doggy, kind, gentle and fearless. We love her so much, and we love the experience we had with Homeward Bound.
We submitted the application, they called our references and we received glowing recommendations from all, including our landlord. We were looking to foster, not adopt as we just lost our amazing American Bulldog to a stroke. Since I am home 24/7 we thought we might fill that hole in our hearts by providing a dog in need with a loving, responsible home. We have a tremendous backyard and a cat.During our interview, they seemed very concerned about our cat. Understandable. However, 3 hours later we received an email stating that we were denied because our son has autism and they were concerned for his safety. This is MY child, I would do nothing to put him in harms way and would have him spend time with a dog before bringing the dog into our home. It was a condescending email implying that I do not care for my son’s safety. Of course I responded, and, if you know an autism mom than you know it was not a pleasant response.Later, my friends neighbor told me she used to work for them, that they lied about the dogs and told the volunteers to lie about the dogs. She said to consider myself lucky to have been turned down by them.Seriously, these people make puppy mills look good.
I want to love this organization because they are so dedicated to their animals, but their human-side customer service is lacking, and I feel like there has to be some kind of a middle ground so theres more chances for dogs to get a good home. They are completely foster-based, so once a week all of the fosters descend upon a parking lot in Schenectady and a small cramped indoor set of cages. Its chaotic and does not properly showcase the dogs. They need a bigger location.Additionally, its not at all clear that an online application must be completed in advance of the visit. Perhaps a sign could be posted on the front so people dont waste their time visiting the dogs before being turned away. I dont see this as a very efficient system - there were lots of people there to get a dog, but very very few are adopted each week relative to the numbers they have. They straight up reject anyone who doesnt have a fenced yard, which automatically removes a large portion of responsible adults.I think, because its all fosters, they feel justified in setting rigorous standards for their animals, and I respect that. But every dog not getting adopted at the event is a dog taking up space for another being killed at a shelter. Ive volunteered at other rescue organizations who make the decision to adopt out knowing that the dog could possibly come back and thats ok. One woman rejected an elderly man because the dog was too energetic for him. Really? How about take a chance and see if they could both find love, if they chose each other? Sometimes imperfect fits end up being perfect.
I adopted a dog recently from Homeward Bound and I was so pleased with their fast response time and the process for adopting. We were so happy to add our new dog to the family and Homeward Bound continues to check in and make sure everything is going well. I highly recommend working with them to adopt your next dog!
These people can say whatever they want to say about us but the fact of the matter is this: My wife and I were looking to adopt at least 1 dog from here. It didnt work in our favor because the way how we would handle this organizations version of crating a dog 24 hours a day would be settled by using a couple baby gates to put the dog in the kitchen till I would come home Mondays and Fridays at 3 or make arrangements during the day to take care of the dog till I would get out of work. The other days of the week would be no problem to need to gate them unless they misbehaved. This organization seems to be a hit or miss and judging by the amounts of 1 star reviews to the 5 stars the 1 stars happen more often. My wife and I know how to take care of dogs, we both grew up with many, not like some of these people we see walking their dogs on a walk where they hit them and verbally abuse them and it blows my mind how people like that are able to apply and be granted to adopt a pet. I would say this place is too picky and discriminates against hard working loving people and very unprofessional and take your business elsewhere and not recommended.
We adopted our puppy Iris (now known as Pumpkin) through this agency and I just want to mention that Homeward Bound made the process extremely easy. We are so happy with our new addition and you can tell that this rescue truly cares about the animals that they take in. Thank you!
I have this a 1 because I know that they do a lot to help animals. But a far as them working with a future adopter, they fail.Filling out an application is very time consuming. And having my vet, and other references taking time to answer questions. Due fo some missing info. That is it. They cannot be bothered to get back to you.I find that this applying on line to a rescue, puts in a huge pool of anybodies. There is very little care as of who I am or what my treatment to my fur family is like. It has become very upsetting, and heartbreaking To think of missing info makes you not worthy.
My wife, child and I were sent an email to come in for the final step of adoption. We went to the facility, went through the interview, and were approved to look at six month and older dogs. We found an awesome dog that we loved and she seemed to like us. We went to schedule a home visit to make sure the dog would be alright with our cats. We got contact information to make arrangements for the home visit and left. Four hours later, we received an email from Tamara saying we were denied to adopt. No explanation was given and upon confirming the email was correct, we were denied with just an explanation saying we were not a good match. Seriously, youre denying a good family to take care of a dog needing a good home for no legitimate reason. This place is terrible and I would not recommend anyone go here for a pet.
I have recently applied to adopt a puppy from this rescue. Unfortunately, I was denied. The reason being my family dog was brought to the vet 4 times in the 6 years we had him under our supervision. I guess unless you have accurate or complete veterinary records, you risk being denied rather abruptly. Ironically, our family rescued him and he had a great life; spoiled beyond belief. I was truly looking forward to raising one of the puppies and have been researching training techniques for over a year. However, they chose not check with my references in which I regularly watch their dogs when my friends and family is on vacation. I wish there was an interview they would entertain because they are the only people I know which would call me unfit to rescue a puppy. Based off of email exchange and an one page application is how they determine your worthiness. Real shame, hate to see it. Surely these precious pups have missed out on their forever homes before and unfortunately here again.
I adopted my dog from Homeward Bound nine years ago, and was the best decision ever! People are complaining about being denied, but they need to understand that HB only wants what’s best for the dogs. They want to make sure the dogs have responsible owners, who do the yearly wellness checks, vaccinations, etc. It’s not all about just getting the dogs adopted, but it’s more about the right home. I always recommend this group to anyone looking to adopt.
We had a wonderful experience adopting our puppy from Homeward Bound. The volunteers are all very dedicated and helpful and the organization is very thorough and devoted to finding appropriate homes for their dogs. I am very grateful for all the work that goes into this operation.
We got our dog, Bobby, about 15 months ago, from homeward bound. They ARE picky with whom they place dogs, and their demeanor can be a bit off putting. I take this as them being highly responsible about making sure animals are placed in situations that have a high rate of success. We did have an instance of meeting with and bonding with a dog, only to be told someone else filled out their paperwork faster. However, it worked out well in the end. Bobby is an amazing dog and his foster family stayed in contact with us for weeks chatting about how he was doing and answering any questions we had. He was rescued from Kentucky. There was no misinformation given about his personality or disposition. I would go through Homeward Bound again.
Homeward Bound Rescue went above & beyond in getting us a rescuedog from KY. One of their people even drove the dog to us from Albany. We could not love LOGAN more & would highly recommend this rescue if you are looking to help a dog in need enjoy the rest of his life.
I wasnt happy..I applied for a female lemon beagle and the person I talked to said Id be the first Person shed contacted when this female Lemon beagle was available. The foster family didnt want to do a meet and greet at the beginning of COVID.. which I understood. I wait a few months to find that the lemon beagle has already been adopted. I didnt bring it to the attention of the person who emailed me because at that point it didnt matter the dog was already adopted I cant change anything. I see other dogs I like but I dont see the point in trying to adopt when Im passed over.
Glad to see many other reviews saying the same thing and that it’s not just me. Do not expect a response once filling out an application, even if you send a follow up email. You would think an adoption agency would want to find their dogs forever homes, not ignore those who want to rescue their dogs.
I am always impressed by the enthusiasm and warmth of volunteers and employees of animal shelters. I think it is because people who are excited about animals are usually happy to get to be around them all day. This Rescue I cannot say the same of. Tamara in particular has been cold and curt, and quite disrespectful to my family. My family currently owns two dogs, one adopted almost 13 years ago from this organization. We love them both, all of the dogs we have ever adopted have lived long and healthy lives. When we were interested in getting a new puppy (because our other two dogs are getting old) we were lead through a series of questions about our vet. When contacted, our Homeward Bound adoptee, Jasper, wasnt up to date on his wellness shots, which we OPT to take (lyme medication in particular). These are voluntary shots that we choose to give our animals, so we didnt think being a little late was a huge deal. Tamara chastised us, said she would call back IN A YEAR to our vet to make sure he gets checked up on, and then said we would not be able to adopt any more puppies from them. The vet even contacted her and told her it was their fault for not sending their regular reminder for his shots. We have accepted that they made a rule and stuck very closely to it, and on its own that would be one thing. However, Tamaras tone and fairly rude emails were unwarranted and extremely unprofessional. Im sad that working with dogs has not melted her frozen heart, and I hope all the adorable and sweet puppies arent affected by her coldness...
This is a dog rescue that does not seem to be focused on placing dogs. They are condescending, especially Tamara. She is rude and incredibly judgmental.. My girlfriend grew up around several dogs all her life, but they see you as a beginner with dogs unless you have done obedience training. We were told we were being “dishonest” because we did not mark ourselves as beginners all over email with zero actual conversations. We own a large home with a giant yard where two adults are home almost 24/7. My girlfriend is active and would be walking and running with the dog. We have three healthy cats that are all current with the vet and happy. Both children are over the age of five, which is something a lot of rescues seem to require. I don’t know what more you could want from people looking to give a dog a loving home. They are a rescue in Tennessee that takes dogs from the south and sells them in NY. Maybe it’s legit, maybe not. Their attitude doesn’t make you want to give them the benefit of the doubt. The people you deal with are out of state and as mentioned, not pleasant to deal with. Places like this give puppy mills a good name. I wouldn’t recommend going with them unless you don’t actually want a dog. Go with any number of other local shelters who actually want to place dogs and you are more sure that it wasn’t taken from someone’s home to be sold in another state.
We applied to adopt and never got a response. Their website says they are open Saturdays, but also says they are not open due to COVID. The huge sign on their building says they are open Saturdays, but then they turn you away at the door. Application is a huge time eater and doesnt get an acknowledgement.
Id give zero stars if I could. Beyond furious with this organization right now. I have been donating and supporting dog rescues my entire adult life-- including a Homeward Bound one this past weekend. My husband has had dogs his entire life and me, my entire adult life. Our dog/s are a huge part of our family. They are friendly, get 5 star ratings at the vet and by everyone they meet. I live in a clean home with a giant fenced in yard. I received a rude email saying I wasnt a good match because my outdoor cat doesnt go to the vet yearly. Ill never consider this organization for adoption again. There are sooo many good ones out there. This one is definitely missing the point!!
I have volunteered with Homeward Bound as a foster for the past three years and have fostered 74 puppies over that time. It is true, you need to have all of your vetting and references up-to-date before you apply. You also need to have your entire family (whomever lives under your roof) to come in for an interview. Homeward Bound is trying to find the best homes for all of the unwanted dogs/puppies that are slated to be euthanized, specifically from certain regions in the south.Everyone that is at the clinic working, who you email, or who you call is a volunteer--with their own jobs, kids, and pets. Some may be better at relating to dogs than people, but everyone there, is in it for the right reason.
My experience was awful Tamara is rude and does not follow up with anything. I have rescued 5 dogs over the past 30 yrs all which were part of my family till the end. She asked for vet to contact I gave her the information and she emailed me back and said the had no records which was not true at all as I nit only brought dogs there for care but also for grooming. She never responded back to me e so we could work it out. My impression is she could care less about these dogs who need a loving family . Shes pathetic.
Filled out an application no response, have a double lot fenced in yard , and take care of my dogs llike they were my kids , dont waste your time with them and I donate money to all kinds of dog rescues wouldnt give them a penny , the dog I was interested in was supposedly 11 weeks old and within 3 days he was 14 weeks old ,scammers making money off of poor dogs who need a god home. , if I could give them 0 stars I would
I adopted from this organization in 2005 and my experience was fine. Not the case this time. They never called my references or even talked to me. They called my vet and talked to a receptionist and denied me because my very healthy 16 year old house cat doesn’t go in for a checkup every year. She’s been in for dental work and an ear infection and my dog goes every year and is up to date with all his shots but that wasn’t good enough. I have used this vet clinic for 20 years and the vet would have told them my pets have always been well cared for. The worst part was how rude they were. Wouldn’t respond to my emails. With all the animals in need of homes these people deny families that can clearly provide safe loving homes.
Adopted from homeward bound 3 months ago and in the process of making our second adoption. We have also been a foster family since we adopted. Absolutely love volunteering and I am glad homeward bound has great guidelines in place to get the rescues in the right hands to be loved and cared for properly. I never have a problem getting a response when I need advice or assistance with a foster. The people are wonderful and this is a great rescue group!!
Although the rescue would benefit from an adoption site with more space we were very satisfied with our experience with them. All of the volunteers acted professional and knowledge and the foster parent for the dog we ended up adopting was very kind and forthcoming with information about the dog.
Had an incredible experience adopting from this rescue today. Their adoption process is lengthy, but for all of the right reasons. They really check on a lot of things before approving you to adopt a pet which I think is wonderful. The volunteers were very kind and sweet and managing a huge incoming of puppies and dogs from the south while still running an adoption clinic. Their adoption fee was beyond fair as they transported the pup, microchipped, made sure it was up to date on medical and vaccines, sent you home with Frontline and a bit of food. They were very organized despite having quite a bit on their plate. They send you home with plenty of information and provide support in case you need it throughout the life of the dog you adopted.
Absolutely love this rescue, the dogs come up from the South every Saturday and the volunteers do an amazing job of finding them forever homes! There are no kennels or shelters, this is completely volunteer and donation funded. The dogs that arent adopted are placed in foster homes where the volunteers can help train them and show them love. This group is such a blessing, Ive adopted 2 so far!
Originally had a wonderful experience adopting my little Charlie from here in February 2017. I sent many interested adopters in this direction when they were searching for a new companion. Charlie’s foster mom, Barb, was knowledgable and devoted to the rehousing these dogs, as one could only hope for an adoption agency. I even raised money for a generous donation which i made to HB in September of 2018. Unfortunately, after the initial adoption and maybe a one-year check in call from homeward bound, all I have experienced is lack in response from them- less than desirable for a rescue agency. When I came across legal issues with the possession of my dog, I couldn’t get a response from them. Multiple phone calls, messages, and emails were left, and nothing was ever returned. Please be cautious when deciding where to adopt a dog from, and be mindful that this is not a responsive agency. This is very disheartening to share since this is where i got the worlds most wonderful little dog. Since dogs do not have a voice, it is up to us as people to advocate for their best interest. Homeward bound dog rescue of New York does not enforce their adoption contract, stating that “If the dog does not continue to reside with the adopter, for any reason, they must be surrendered to homeward bound.” My dog is no longer with his adopter, myself, and Homeward bound never responded to any of my desperate messages for help.
I truly appreciate when a rescue organization does their due diligence in making sure that animals go to safe homes. That being said, these people are over the top. Not only did they not contact any of my references before deciding to decline my application, they based their evaluation on vet reference without actually talking to my vet. The receptionist is not a valid resource. My vet knows how good I am to my animals. I hope they can find homes for their rescues. I will find my dog elsewhere and will discourage people from using this rescue.
Great place and people to get your favorite pet. Many volunteers and young ladies washing all dogs that come in. Many cages and varieties of puppys and older dogs to rescue. All have their shots and paper work. Also excellent screening of the people adopting animals. Very great system and great people to deal with.A must try adoption home.
I experienced the same thing that many of these 1 star reviewers did. I made the mistake of telling Tamara that I previously had a dog who died of lymphoma. My vet talked through options with me and we decided it was best to put her down peacefully instead of submitting her to the pain of another year of treatment. When I explained this, Tamara immediately questioned my (and my vets) decision to do so and seemed put off by our decision. She then performed her vet history check consisting of calling the random front desk receptionists at the multiple vets we had been to over the years (we lived in many different cities). When some of the vets told her that my dog required vaccinations in 2018 she immediately discounted me for not having records of those vaccinations. These vaccinations were not performed because my dog died in 2017. When I explained this to her she seemed flustered and confused and told me that my vet history is too complicated and I will not be approved to adopt.I would suggest going to another shelter that is willing to put in the due diligence required to accurately judge someones ability to care for a pet.
We filled out an application to this organization as we thought they would be perfect to adopt from since they supposedly foster all dogs instead of keeping them in a shelter, and our home has plenty of space and a fully fenced backyard for any dog. What we got instead was a short email when we specifically asked to be contacted by phone. A very condescending woman, Tamara, was the point of contact for these emails. She accused us of lying about our past pet history when we simply didnt have all the records on hand and refused to speak with our Vet directly. Probably because she didnt want to hear how phenomenal of pet parents we are and shed have to deal with the fact that her premature judgement of us via email was wrong. Apparently, from other reviews here, this is not uncommon when dealing with this woman; and its a shame. What shes done, instead of providing a dog with a loving home, has condemned a dog from being in a perfectly loving and safe environment for its life.Tamara should certainly not be working for this organization until she learns proper respect and customer service. Avoid this organization at all costs, or lie to their face and say youve never owned pets. Apparently, inexperience gets you places with this organization versus actually being a responsible pet parent.
If they dont like you they ask for documents not mentioned. If you had a dog 5 years ago and dont have records and the Vet clinic closed down, they require the records. Not a fair decision when youve done nothing wrong. Be careful giving too much information when not required
I hope if considering this place you are able to read these comments first. President Tamara (based in Tennessee, orchestrating the puppy trafficking up from the South) and the bookkeeper Carol are the only two employed by this rescue organization. Everyone else is a volunteer and to be quite honest - all the volunteers with whom I interacted were very friendly, rational and honestly believed in their work.I cannot say the same for Tamara or Carol. It is quite clear these two make up their minds according to arbitrary (unpublished, entirely subjective) criteria, then seek out whatever evidence they need quote to pronounce you unfit. This is equivalent (to me) to denying service to someone because of their race and I do not believe non-profits exist to serve the whimsical egos of their founders. There is no appeal process, there is no documented standard for selection, there are no alternate people to work through.Look for reviews of this rescue not just here but also on Yelp and you will see consistent feedback. So - here is the advice offered to experiencing this establishment, just as I would review a restaurant:1. Keep your background simple. Apparently having any prior pet experience is purely a source of reasons to be judged unfit. No matter how amazing you think you have been - the cursory checks made will likely go no further than the random receptionist who answers the phone when they call your vet. So the best bet here is to simply say you will be a first-time pet owner - and stroke their egos asking for all the advice on how to be the best owner possible - then revert to normal later.2. Ignore the contract. I have on good legal authority that this is merely a bully document - think of the actual legal ordeals kids go through in custody cases, do you really think any court is going to support the ridiculous terms in the contract? Much as we love our pets, the law treats them as property and has its own criteria for abuse - once you have the dog, they forfeit any right to judge or even inspect. But - whatever - to get that far, pretend and play nice. Note just because you sign something does not make it a legal document. Its not even notarized.3. To avoid the bait-and-switch where you are enticed by puppies but then only approved for adult dogs, have a story at the ready for how you will only be away from home for 2-3 hours at a time during their first six months. Im serious. Puppy criteria will require the dog never be left more than 3 hours.4. If you have kids, make sure they are with you when you visit - this is another hurdle they will throw. By having the kids there to interact with the dog will alleviate this. Or even better - say you have no kids, that the dog will be like your child and the center of your universe.I hope with this easy 4-point guide, the experience will be more pleasant for you and you find a great pet. Ironically, doing this will also make things go more smoothly for the dogs, the volunteers, the foster families and even for Tamara and Carol. Wagging my tail!p.s. Attached photo is from the facebook page of the organizations president - to baseline the standard of living apparently considered appropriate for dog ownership.Update: apparently they took down the photo posted. It was from Tamara’s Facebook page and showed her own pack of dogs amidst the filth in her own home. I believe she and Carol get their kicks feeling superior to good people in some delusion of being authoritative and righteous. They can deny on any whim. They could be racist and homophobic for all anyone knows and deny based on that. I feel bad for the good volunteers.I adopted a rescue from Alabama via No Greater Love. Family run and very responsive. She’s a happy lil mixed breed and has been properly spoiled for nearly 4 months.
I am a vet tech. Went to their adoption clinic. There were great people there who were excited to have me adopt a pet. We had filled out the paperwork and after 2hours my husband and I had chosen a pup. When I was signing final paperwork and giving my $300 it was brought up to me that I would be bringing my dog to work with me . No idea where they got that impression but it was not true and I was denied a pup.My heart was broken.
If you have that many 1 star reviews - you have to believe that there is a reason why!!! I And #1 is HORRENDOUS customer service. I feel bad for the dogs mostly. Save for one or two volunteers, the rest are very unhelpful. Nobody knows who is doing what (or who anybody is). Complete chaos! Emails dont get returned (apparently because they get too many?). You must bring all family members - no surprises for the kids - no exceptions - you will not even get interviewed (which I question, what is the point of getting my application approved before going there?). It was a very sad experience. For family though, it worked out - because we went to the Mohawk-Humane Society later and brought home two beautiful doggies (a mother and daughter). And they could not be sweeter.
My children are scarred by this establishment. They were so excited to get a puppy. Employees or “volunteers” treat you and your children like dirt. Volunteers look at you like your trash and don’t deserve a dog because you work 9-5 like normal people. I will be contacting every person at this establishment that make any sort of decisions. Also, I will be contacting multiple organizations about this matter. Thanks for no help. Wish there was a no star option.
After filling out an application, we were denied the ability to adopt when we told this rescue that our cats only see the vet for required vaccinations and if there is something wrong with one of them. Visits to the vet for our cats are FAR too traumatic to bring them in Willy-nilly for a yearly checkup. We love our pets dearly and they live happy healthy lives indoors. Pet rescues should be happy for good homes willing to adopt a pet. Being so rigid with bringing animals to the vet needlessly seems cruel in and of itself. I definitely wouldnt recommend working with this rescue.
I tried adopting a dog through this rescue. I was turned down because I did not bring my dogs for a yearly checkup. I have had and cared for dogs for over 40 years. They all lived long lives. I always brought them to the vet for their vaccinations and, of course, when something seemed wrong with them. With all the dogs that need a good home, which I would definitely give them, I find it disheartening that this rescue would deny me a dog simply because I did not bring my pets for a yearly checkup. I have since gotten a dog from another rescue, she is one happy and lucky dog.
This is a small space in a central parking area. Although this place looks a bit disheveled and disorganized, you will find a well oiled team of people working together to foster and place dogs to the best matched humans they can find. We were impressed by the care and concern each dog and potential adopters received. Go now and find your forever for friend!
This was the worst rescue organization that Ive ever worked with. They are truly not good people. My husband and I are professionals who own our home with a fenced in yard. They told me that I was disorganized and they would not allow us to get one of their dogs without even a conversation. I would stay away. There are so many great organizations out there. This is not one of them.
Unfortunately this “rescue” does not focus on rehoming dogs. Denies people for unknown reasons and is very rude about how they conduct their “interviews”. Ours was a 20 minute lecture on how to care for a dog, knowing already that she wasn’t going to let us take it. Obviously not everyone there is probably awful but the foster mom that we had interview us clearly didn’t want to give up her dog regardless of who the adopters were, she didn’t even want it to come outside lol got the generic email from Tamara on the way home... it was a bad experience all around and a waste of time.
I wish I could give zero stars. Our application to adopt a dog was denied due to not having yearly vet exams. Our pets have ALWAYS received any medical care needed, UTD on vaccinations, spay/neuter, preventative care for heartworm and fleas etc. Tamara evidently could not be bothered to check out personal references, and anyone will tell you our dogs are very well taken care of, well trained, very loved and go everywhere with us: camping, boating, hiking etc. Its a shame that an extremely good and loving home is denied to a dog in need.
Well, this rescue certainly pimps their dogs. They have a lot of rules for the adopter, but then they seem to not care about what they do.Not really pleased with his rescue. I mean I expected to be lied to a little, but not to the extent I was, and also, not making a PHONE CALL o inform of parvo possibility? I got an email... Now I have another dog, and was not pleased that they were possibly exposed as well. They get two stars because I managed to get a cute, moderately well behaved dog out of the deal. But the email and the lieing about things like crate training really are irritating.
Stay away from this place. Almost impossible to adopt a dog there. Was just approved to adopt a dog and was told to pick him up Saturday. Now they gave him to someone else. Im heartbroken. Stay away from this place and go to a reputable Animal Rescue..Very dirty dealings going on in this place .Foster mother had Sam for a week and now refuses to give him to me after I adopted him .She wants to keep him.How unfair and cruel is this?
I went to the adoption times on a Saturday eager to find a new pup. When we went to try to pet one that we liked, we were told we werent allowed because we werent approved to pet puppies. The staff woman there was very rude to us. Unfortunately for the puppies we will be going somewhere else for our new forever furball friend.
If I could post with NO STARS then I would!!!! I called to inquire about a puppy was denied even before meeting us because of where we live (no yard). Tamara is so rude. She hung up on me in the middle of our conversation. She definitely needs to be replaced!!!! Cannot believe this!!!
We rescued Diego (a Pomeranian/ chihuahua mix) who has brought us endless joy. The process with Homeward Bound was efficient, yet comprehensive to ensure a loving home. Diego turned three in March. He is so loving. He has a remarkably charming perdonality. While weighing 6 pounds, he believes he is a German Shephard. The woman who cared for him as a puppy at Homeward Bound certainly is responsible for making him a lady be bug.
Wish there was an option for 0 stars. Dealt with this rescue recently at the big connection event in Delmar. Got screwed out of a dog. I had been visiting with this dog on and off for some time and they just gave him to another couple who arrived much later and didnt even have a yard, because they had the paper filled out ; the paper they never mentioned and I didnt even know existed since I hadnt dealt with them before. People can make up their own minds but I would never deal with this bunch again!
Very rude send an email instead of talking to people we have had animals all our lives rescued them and all lived long and happy lives. Well we will go elsewhere and dont preach to me to rescue or adopt. Tamara should learn some customer service skills and respect. Hope she treats animals better than people
As much as I want to help their cause, they are probably one of the worst people to adopt from. Was rejected because I was still a student at the University at Albany. I have an on campus apartment and a housing downtown with friends. Denied because I wouldnt be responsible when I have a job and past experiences in taking care of dogs, especially owning 3 back home in Long Island. Tamara, you shouldnt be working at this shelter.

2022-01-31We adopted little puppy Taps yesterday and the whole process was made so easy. Michele was great as the middle man to our adoption process! Everyone responded in a super timely manner. His foster mom Lily was extremely helpful and knowledgeable. So happy to have our new family member! His big sister loves him.

2022-04-11We welcomed Freddie an older Parsons Terrier into our home. The representative from Homeward Bound was very helpful and was interested in seeing that he was a good match for his new family. As is true with many older dogs Freddie has his frailties but HB was up front describing his needs and they clearly had his best interests as their number one priority. I would recommend considering this rescue group to folks seeking a forever friend.

2022-01-25Last March we adopted our Jack and just a few days ago, Oreo. Both are through Homeward bound. Going through the application and interview process, it is evident that Homeward Bound cares very deeply about the placement of their animals. They ensure that the dogs are going to families who will not just take excellent care of the babies that they rescue but that these pups will be endlessly loved. We are now a family with 3 dogs and couldn’t be happier with them. The foster Moms and Dads take excellent care of the dogs and truly care about finding them loving homes. We had the pleasure of first working with Dyahn for Jacks adoption. She was wonderful, attentive and brought Jack to our home for us to meet. Rob was Oreo’s Dad and he was equally responsive and answered all our questions. He also was patient with us as we wanted to make sure Oreo would be a good fit not just for jack but also Oreo as they weren’t fans of each other at first. After several visits they were fine and we couldn’t be happier with the addition of Oreo to our family. It would not have been possible without Rob’s patience. Thank you Homeward Bound, Dyahn, and Rob!

2021-09-18We had been looking for a puppy for some time. We had contacted several other adoption agencies but either never heard back or were told they would require a fenced yard, but we live on a dead end. Finally we heard of HB and was accepted very quickly and within a week we adopted Clove (now Zoe). She is a very welcomed, loved and spoiled addition to our family. Thanks HB staff!

2021-10-10Awesome organization. The volunteers and foster homes are the best. They all deserve medals. Benji isn’t the first adoption from homeward bound. Will not be the last. Thank you Homeward bound for allowing us to adopt.

2021-07-19Very happy you rescued Cupcake now Luna. We love her so much and blessed to have her. Thank you for all you do to help these little friends. We are so thankful for Homeward Bound. All have been great to work with and understanding. Luna is doing great and growing up fast. She was a lucky little girl that they found her and her siblings. Thank you again.

2022-05-05This rescue group does not fully disclose the behavioral issues of the dog. They like that you paid 250.00 dollars and will turn around and re list the dog without any full disclosure of its high risk (aggression, biting and excessive hyper activity levels). Also, after spending an exorbitant amount of money on numerous vet visits, vaccinations (which had no follow up booster and had to be re-done) and medications (flea/tic and heart worm) will put blame on the owner and allude that the owner did not do enough. It was even disclosed to me by a foster parent that Homeward Bound is many times not forth coming and minimizes the dogs behavioral issues. Do yourself a favor and look at other rescue facilities.

2021-10-03Homeward Bound is the best. They knew he was a good boy! Absolutely sweet boy. Previous owners said he was bad boy but he’s wonderful and loving.

2022-04-18We adopted the most beautiful, gentle dog through Homeward Bound. Couldn’t be happier with the care they gave her in transporting her from her rescue family in Puerto Rico up to NY. Thank you!
