Our family of 4 stayed here for a weekend. Wish we books more nights! It absolutely exceeded our expectations. The hostel has som much artsy character and it’s spotless! Beds are comfy, linens and towels clean and fresh. Communal kitchen with free food and delicious morning coffee/ tea. Ping pong table, foosball table, laundry room, tv room with comfy couches, free bikes to use while you stay there. The coolest are people who stay there and the conversation you will have! JP at the front desk is knowledgeable, and kind and funny. He gave us some tips where to go and what to do to have the best Buffalo experience. Location is a gem! Walking distance to bars, restaurants and impressive City Hall. Hostel has every single thing you would need for your stay. We will be booking beds here every single time we are in the area.
I stayed here because I was taking a summer class at the University at Buffalo. This is an amazing place to be; there is a great sense on community and belongingness. All the staff and even the other guest are welcoming. This Hostel has allowed me the privacy to study well, and can also be sociable if you want it to be. The location is great, right in the middle of town, and either walking or a short uber to where you need to go. Totally reccomend!
Our youth church group scheduled a trip to the Niagara falls and wanted to stay in a place with a safe environment, the Hostel Buffalo was perfect and accomodating overall. The teens enjoyed the game room so much. We will definetely check it out in the near future. Thanks Hostel Buffalo!!!
I stayed here 2 nights in late September and had no clue what to expect. This is, without a doubt, the best hostel Ive ever stayed at in the US. JP was insanely hospitable and was great for conversation and history of the area. HIGHLY recommended!! I feel this is a huge secret in Buffalo. Will def be back next year for Borderland Festival! I stayed in an open room and my stuff was never touched. Great security and great tenants. I met some amazing people here, from all walks of life. This is the quintessential hostel folks, just do it!
Amazing hostel. Probably one of the better hostels Ive stayed at while travelling. Location is right downtown and close to cool restaurants and bars. Allentown is walkable as well. The hostel is super clean and cozy. It has nice shared areas (including a ping pong table) and free coffee/bagels in the morning. The best past were the staff. We chatted forever and they gave us great recommendations. Do the bike tour as well!
Awesome, artistic spot with clean places to sleep and friendly staff. They offer their kitchen to a group that feeds the homeless once a week. They have a piano for all visitors to use, a lending library, and a room to watch..VHS tapes! Also a laundry room, so many great plants, and fun art everywhere. They post flyers with the newest happenings in the area. Just a cool spot.
I stayed here on a Friday and Saturday night. This place is good if you want a relatively quiet stay (which i was happy with). But if youre looking for a hostel with a bustling common room of solo travellers mingling and staff organizing pub crawls then this isnt for you. Most people seem to stay in their rooms and hostel staff at the front desk.
This was a nice place to stay conveniently located in the theater district. The staff were very friendly and helpful and overall just great to talk to. They also have done great keeping the building safe and clean. The guest room was very cozy, and it was next to the kitchen. If you’re in buffalo/ Niagara Falls this is a great place to stay for a very cheap price!
Amazing staff. I met Don, Nicole (or so) and Cat (a lady). I met all of them on different duration and they well warm and kind. Don stood out for me. He took his time to explain the navigation from the hostel to Niagara Falls. I truly appreciated that. The hostel is located in downtown buffalo with easy access to events. The hostel has clean bathrooms all the time. You are given your bed linens and towel which is cool. I walked most of the time and used the train or bus where necessary. I had a great time. I will definitely visit again. I recommend this hostel for budget-friendly travelers.
Amazing place!! I loved the style and vibes of HBN. You can use the kitchen and its cooking utensils anytime, and there is free coffee, oat and bread so you can serve yourself; also you can use the fridge. The hostel is clean and have different areas for recreation like the basement with Netflix and DVD movies, ping pong table, a lounge on the second floor and a piano on the ground floor!! Also there are plenty of books all around. Finally the location is great and the staff is so kind. I really recommend this Hostel
My stay at Hostel Buffalo-Niagara was excellent. The rooms were clean, the common area well equipped and full of things to do, and the staff friendly and ready to help with advice for what to do in the city. Add in an eccletic aesthetic with unique art and decorations plus tidbits about the city all over the place, and you have yourself an awesome - and affordable - place to stay while visiting. Easy 10/10.
These guys were very welcoming to me and one of the nicest Hostels I have ever stayed with. The staff were easy to make friends with and very informative on what was going on in the city. The Hostel is in a great location, being right on the main street and right by the free train that goes up and down main street. The hostel itself is clean and well kept. The beds are comfy and clean, the bathrooms are well kept, and the atmosphere is nice. It has game rooms, wifi, a full kitchen you can cook your food in and free bike rentals! As far as Im concerned it is a great place to stay!
I had rented a room in a eight bedded dorm. The room was quite spacious. The staff were friendly and helpful. The toilets were clean, though it would have been even better with some basic necessities such as sachets of toothpaste, soap, etc for emergency purposes. The linens and towels were clean. Im not sure about the air-conditioning, because it was quite warm during the night. Small inconveniences aside, it was a very pleasant stay, and Id definitely recommend the place.
Ive stayed here twice now. And for the most part its alright but, Communal style living isnt fun nor comfortable. But, $30 a night is the best price youll find in downtown buffalo. So If youre young and need somewhere to stay for a couple nights then the Hostel will work fine but, its not for everybody and its not for couples and youll want privacy. They do have a few single rooms available but those were full when i checked in. Make sure you do a reservation for the single rooms before going.
Inexpensive and clean - what more could you want from a hostel? Would highly recommend to anyone wanting a hostel stay in buffalo. Well located on one of the main streets in buffalo and near a light rail stop. Location is safe and building is well secured by multiple sets of locked doors.Look forward to stating here again if Im ever back in towne!
Killer VHS collection in the basement, almost didnt check it out before leaving! Would have been a huge mistake. I love that they have a flat-rate no matter how last-minute the reservation - weekend/weekday. I came in the winter/off-season, so Im not sure if that would change or not. Well-supplied kitchen. Seems to be a lot of businesses nearby/pretty centrally located. Its mostly just street parking, but I was able to get parking spots within a block or two, and the desk associate informed me that street parkings free on weekends. How great! Lots of little things that make this a nice, affordable place to stay.
I love Buffalo Niagara Hostel! If youre visiting Buffalo and looking for the citys truly authentic soul, this is the place to stay. Centrally located and the best budget/ deal in town, I highly recommend it. Bonus tip: they have awesome contemporary art shows, music events, and community gatherings often that enliven Buffalos sleepy downtown. This is a Buffalo treasure you would be remiss not to check out.
Not clean or quiet but the price is right. Some out of order equipment in the bathrooms. The desk is not manned from 10:30-4 so good luck getting into the room during that time if your key card stops working. The room was pretty cold but they gave us extra blankets in advance. Compared to other hostels Ive stayed in this one is below average.
It was my second time staying in a hostel and it was as good if not better than my first experience. The staff is extremely nice, helpful and warm. The place is decorated so beautifully with lots of art all over the place. Kitchen is wonderful. They have written small notes all over the place to tell you whatever you need to know about how things are done at the hostel. Lots of good books lying everywhere. Has everything including laundry and ironing. Just keep in mind that there is no staff between 10:30 am and 4 pm so talk to them ahead of time if you need some help regarding that.
Quirky cool place to stay. Great location right downtown. First time I ever stayed in a hostel and it was exactly what I expected. I was in town to get my passport so all I needed was a bed to crash in and this fit the bill. Stayed in a womens dorm on a bunk bed. The train outside was a little loud in the middle of the night but I managed to sleep through it. They provided bed linens and towels. If you need to lock something up though make sure you bring a lock because they may run out.
If youre young, like to explore, and travel with a budget, you should consider this place to stay when you are in Buffalo. This hostel located in downtown Buffalo, the Theater District, great location to walk or bike around the city, see some old buildings and churches, go to the river bank, or watch some great shows in the Sheas performance art center. When I stayed here, I joined the Buffalo slow roll biking group, biked around the city for about 2 hours, saw some beautiful views and hospitable neighborhood. I watched an amazing show Riverdance in Sheas, wonderful Irish music and dancing, as if coming from the fairy tale. The hostel itself is artistic. They have high ceiling, full wall of interesting posters and stylist plants occupy the reception area. The room is spacious and comfy. Theres a small studio next to it hosting shows for artists from time to time. I happened to see them put up a show called The lonely town. Loved it.Best way to get here from the airport is taking the airport G express bus, $2.5 takes about 20 minutes, cheap and efficient. To go to the Niagara falls, walk a few blocks and take No. 40b bus, get you right to the Niagara visitor center.I definitely enjoyed my stay.
Amazing staff, location and price, very comfortable!12 minute walk or a quick streetcar ride from the heart of downtown Buffalo and the Sabres arena. The price is great, the hostel is super clean, cozy, and comfortable as well. The staff are very nice people who genuinely love their city and ensuring their guests have a great visit. Would recommend this place to anyone looking to spend a night or two in Buffalo for a sporting event or to check out the Falls.
This place is cool as hell. I loved and enjoyed my time there.First the staff is very nice and friendly. The building is like an art museum I couldnt stop taking pictures and selifies every a few steps. I took as many pictures inside as I took by the falls. The residents are professionals and considerate to others. The rooms are quite ( off course it depends on your roomate), beds are comfy.Theres a beautiful huge kitchen in each floor, with every cooking tool you can think off- Free oat meals and tea all day long. Theres also free items cabinets passed on by floor-mates. The living room has a beautiful view, books, cool board games, dinning table and my favorite, the rocking chair.Theres a movie room in the basement with a huge collection of movies. next to it theres a laundry room.Oh yeah, theres a piano too.I really enjoyed the time I spent there and met a lot of cool people. I highly recommend this for young professionals who are looking to explore buffalo in style.
This was the best hostel Ive stayed. From the very beginning it felt like home, a cozy place to stay in Buffalo, NY. It has most comodities most people need for a short stay; bathrooms, kitchen with lots of food to cook for free, a dining room, lots of books to read, etc. Staff treat travelers like friends. This is a must-stay in Buffalo, very affordable hostel. Its located 15 min walk away from the terminal and over half an hour away from Niagara Falls, US. We loved this hostel!
All the hostel was really clean, the bed was comfortable, the staff was helpful and kind, and it was located downtown, near the bus station, train and several local buses, so that was great for walking and my trip to Niagara Falls. The bedroom was big, the kitchen full and with everything you need for just breakfast or cooking something, the bathroom was clean and the hot water works perfectly.
A truly great place to stay. Its clean; the staff is friendly and very helpful. The location seems to be pretty central, close to the Allen and Elmwood area, which I found to be very cool places. The front door is locked via a keypad after hours and the living areas are further locked via keycard access (as are the individual rooms) so its very secure and safe. I met a lot of fun and interesting people in the 2 nights I had here as well. If youre going to stay in Buffalo theres no reason not to stay at this hostel!
The guys were firendly, place was very clean, beds were fine. The place was just completely empty when I was there was the only problem, but so was the rest of buffalo. Height of the busy season, but I think there were 12 beds in my dorm and 2 dudes. So not much of a social scene and I think thats the best part of a hostel really..
Recently stayed at Hostel Buffalo-Niagara for one night. The staff was friendly and helpful. Rooms were clean and the kitchen had everything I needed.Checkout was at 10:30 but the staff was nice enough to give me a temporary key card to access the kitchen and lounge until I left for the airport. Will definitely stay here again when I pass through Buffalo.
Stayed here for the bar exam in february just before the exam. The room was freezing cold and unbearably loud. Couldnt get any sleep. Even the hallway was warmer than the room...So I had to move to a hotel when the exam started. The lounge area and kitchen was nice though.
It was my first time ever staying in a hostel, and Im honestly really glad that I gave the experience a chance, instead of just checking into a hotel. The staff is super down-to-earth, helpful, and friendly; the beds are very comfortable; the building is very safe, secure, and clean. They provide bed linens, a blanket, a pillow, a fresh towel, the keycode to the front door, and a keycard to the lounges and bedroom. There is a kitchen with 2 refrigerators, 2 stoves, and all the dishes, utensils, pots and pans, and spices you could hope for. They also provide free oatmeal (with optional brown sugar and raisins) and coffee (with optional creamer and sugar). Rooms have little cube lockers for your things, and the basement has big luggage lockers, and they also have a storage room for bigger things. You can bring your own lock, or rent one for a fully refundable fee. I stayed here for 4 days and honestly had a great time. I cant wait to return in the future. :)
This hostel needs to be SAVED for generations to come! Been going here since 2005 and its truly a gem for Buffalo and my personal home away from home,, JP and the rest of the staff are very attentive to guests and engage very well and take a genuine interest on how your day went and offered numerous alternative events to attend in and outside the hostel.. excellent facilities!!
I got a private room, it was great. This was my first experience in a hostel. My room card ended up not working bc it was near my phone, they helped me i was in a panic it was 2am and staff was on site and helped me within minutes. Very clean, very polite staff. Would reccomend!!
First, this is not a safe area. It is deserted and scary.I stayed at this hostel in late August. The room was hot and stuffy and smelled of garbage. Small bugs were biting me. I had to move to another hotel. When I called the front desk, I was told I would receive a refund. Fast forward 3 months: no refund. When I called the manager he argued with me and even yelled. He accused me of scamming him.The bottom line: find another place to stay.
Overall we had a wonderful experience with our time at the Buffalo Niagra Hostel. The place is very clean, we had a private room that had two bunk beds in it and was just down the hall from the bathrooms. The bathrooms were very clean, and even though we were staying on a summer weekend, we hardly saw anybody the whole time. The hostel is located right next to the metro train that runs down main street, which is free to ride downtown and only about $4 per person to ride down to the park or zoo. The hostel is about at 10 minute walk to a local coffee place called Spot that is great for lunch and breakfast. The hostel has a full kitchen and a lounge with pool table, darts, and TV with a variety of old VHS tapes that will remind you of simpler times. My wife and I watched Willow on our last night. Speaking of movies, about three buildings down from the Hostel is an old movie theatre that is very low key, but is clean and plays just about anything that is playing in mainline theatres. We had a great experience with this hostel and strongly recommend to anyone looking for a good place to stay on a budget in Buffalo.
The Hostel in downtown Buffalo has been a hub and second home for me in getting to know the city. The staff is very informed with all things Buffalo (be it common places and directions or underground happenings and quirky up-and-comings). Plus, the staff is so friendly even behind their edgy artsy expression
Hey there everyone, If you are traveling to buffalo and need a nice place to stay, this hostel is an excellent choice, very clean rooms, washrooms with showers that are maintained very well and one doesnt have to wait to get their turn as they have them on every floor and usually are not busy. They have a kitchen with free coffee and tea, a fridge and all kinds of utensils you can use to cook whatever you wanted to, less than a mile from downtown and right next to all kinds of transport and the entertainment district of buffalo, the staff were very helpful and were available for any kind of advice you might need, also has a lounge in the basement with a good collection of videos you can watch for free.......overall a great place to stay and meetwonderful people and home like experience....you should have no problems here.....ideal for anyone coming for an interview or to visit the sisters of charity hospital or uni of buff hospital
Awesome place to stay. Friendly staff, clean. Meet people from all over. We stayed here as a Youth group on a mission trip. We worked on the East side doing work on homes for Habitat. The Buffalo Hostel provided a safe affordable place to stay for our group of 27. If you take the Hostel away, you may also be taking away groups like us. People coming into the community, to be a part of raising up their neighborhoods, building homes, confidence,self-worth, empowerment, perspective, self-lessness...the list goes on and on. It is also a place to meet and learn from people all over the country and the world. If you take away the Buffalo Hostel, its not just the building youll lose.Chele ParkerGranby, CT.
Really great place. Right in the centre of Buffalo, with a metro/tram station right outside. Spotlessly clean. Buffalo is not that interesting, but its great place to stop for Niagara falls, and there were some outdoor concerts while I was there. I managed to meet some very fun people there, one of whom I met up with later in my trip. Gotta try the Buffao wings and pizza too.
Nice hostel. I ll be back👍. To the manager: Dont pay the internet bill, so people will start talking to each other. 7,8 people in a room and all of them are sitting on their phones. The one that is talking is usually the one that has his phone dead. And yes his talking by himself 😒!
This place is an amazing place to be. No matter how many nights you stay this hostel is where its at. Everything is so conveniently located around the hostel and the staff here is amazing. So whenever you come to Buffalo please make Hostel Buffalo-Niagara your home away from home
Top location, nice rooms, very tidy, comfortable beds and the best: the staff is very friendly, provides you with all the necessary information about public transportation, cool places and events to see in Buffalo and helps you out when you have other problems or concerns. We were really lucky to find that hostel and can only recommend it!
What can I say? I havent stayed in too many hostels in my life, but Im sure that few are as pleasant as Hostel Buffalo Niagara. The first thing you notice is the welcoming reception area, with cool posters from floor to ceiling, collected over years of Buffalo art and cultural events, intermixed with handy suggestions for things to do and goings on about town. My friend and I didnt need any of that since I used to live in Buffalo, I already know my way around and had a long list of things I wanted to do, but it was nice to see that a guest could find out about a lot of cool, alternative events right there. The hostel walls are decorated with images taken from Buffalos past and colorful wall art and the entire place is absolutely spotless. Our room on the third floor, in the back, was very comfortable, had really high ceilings and two huge windows, giving us great light and air circulation. The bunk beds were comfortable as far as bunk beds go and the bathrooms were also clean and spacious. There is a nice & comfy and funky lounge on the second floor, right next to an equally great and well equipped kitchen, though we didnt do any cooking. The lounge is chock-a-block with well-selected literature, comfy sofas and friendly travelers. Just last week a ping-pong table was installed in the basement and the hostel also offers bike-rentals for getting around what is an extremely bike-able city. The hostel is located in the heart of Buffalos theater district and within easy walking distance of downtown Buffalo attractions as well as Allentown, a historic neighborhood and foodie/bar scene destination. With the notable exception of SpOt coffee, a Buffalo institution, avoid the nearby Chippewa St nightlife strip at all costs. If you need to go further afield, the hostel is well situated for access to both the NFTA Metro train that goes up main street and a host of busses going all over. The Greyhound bus station is also about a ten minute walk away, and the Exchange St. Amtrak station is about the same.Buffalo is a truly special town, with tons of history, art, culture and blue-collar personality. For budget travelers or those that just like hostel culture, the Hostel Buffalo-Niagara is a fantastic home base for exploring everything this underrated city, and region have to offer.
Hostel Buffalo Niagara understands the spirit of hostelling well. Pity the City of Buffalo wants to sell out the building from under the organization. The locals have rallied to save the Main Street institution smack dab in a vital theater district showing everything from Hamilton to off off off Broadway. My room was neat and secure. The kitchen had two stoves, two sinks and two fridges and plenty of counter space. A common room off the kitchen gave me a peaceful place to drink coffee and write. I drank coffee, wrote and gazed upon the passing subway cars. The fun awaits close at hand and the staff can handle night owls and late check outs alike. I wish I had found a Save the Hostel sticker before I checked out. All the cool businesses downtown proudly displayed the message. As much as Im a big fan on my own room, bunking with twelve men has brought back memories of my time in the barracks, the former. At the Sigma Nu House, at the corner of Oakhill and Abbott in East Lansing, the men kept their rooms for entertaining. And we all slept in the dormer. We actually built a bar in our room, with shelves for bottles of spirits and a fridge for beer. When we held a house wide progressive party, each room following an international theme, we found a bear rug and a Soviet flag and served vodka straight and vodka in orange juice. Waldo, no one went by their first names, believed strongly that communism had to be contained. I rather stood for the position, Well, have we met the Soviets? Are the Soviets really that horrible? Lenin, Stalin, Gorbachev, Yeltsin, Putin, I was happy when MTV began singing songs of Glasnost, like Young Lawyers in Love.Last night, I was awakened numerous times by visitors from all over arriving, almost making me think of young soldiers with their torches on while making the bed, arriving with backpacks carrying just enough gear, but no guns or ammo. I noted their movements and fell asleep when the torches went dark. These troopers worked quickly to make camp in the bunk house and score some zzzzzzs.I awoke early, not as early as during the work week, but early enough to put on the coffee in the kitchen. Ready to be poured when a party of men and women from Spain arrived for breakfast. Like many who visit this hostel, they have rented a car to drive up to Niagara Falls, although a two dollar bus ride on the 40 bus runs all day. I usually keep to myself, just enjoying the table talk. Today, though, I asked if they knew about Goat Island. You can drive your car out to Goat Island and visit the American and the Canadian Falls easily. G. O. A. T Island? Thats right. And then walk over to Luna Island, a great big stone perch between Bridal Falls and the American Falls. The group shared this news excitedly and began talking about soccer in Mandrid and Barcelona. I had shares my little bit of tourist knowledge and so could turn back to my private writing without feeling selfish.
Wondrous hostel with lovely staff, beautifully grand common areas, spacious rooms, great facilities including the VHS basement lounge, and convenient location on Main Street free train line and walking distance to the original Buffalo wings at Anchor Bar! Incredibly affordable at $25 per night. Highly recommend fellow travellers to layover this unique city and stay at Hostel Buffalo-Niagara, if not for the Original Wings, then Niagara Falls! If taking taxi or driving, try the address 662 Washington Street which is the back of the building identifiable with an old Hostelling International sign.

2022-05-09I had the pleasure of staying for two weeks. I very much enjoyed my stay. Its a charming eclectic boutique hostel, and the staff are hard working. They do an excellent job of maintaining it and creating a welcoming environment. A bonus is that its in the heart of downtown Buffalo, within walking distance to theatres, restaurants, cafes, etc and its not far from Niagara Falls. I rode the bus for $4 dollar round trip to the falls. Well worth it!

2022-03-17Pretty good value for the money. One issue is that there is only toilet and shower stall on one floor, so at full capacity, about 30 people are fighting for one stall. Also, if someone is using the shower, it becomes inconvenient/invasive to use the toilet. The beds are also a bit uncomfortable. I don’t expect $1000 mattresses, but the upper bunk is so low, you can’t sit up when you’re on the lower bunk. There parking instructions, but still receive the parking ticket. As a local business, they should make sure to give the correct information depending on what time of the year the guests are staying, as local laws change.*edited to add, JP was a fantastic host and even came to find me to personally apologize. I have changed my rating to reflect the great customer care received.

2022-05-30Was my first experience at the Hostel, stayed one night for the Buffalo marathon, free parking during the weekend in front of the building. Clean rooms and beds! Very cozy and they have everything you need. Good location close to many theaters.

2022-06-19It was my first time staying at a hostel and it was pretty good. I think that the aesthetic was really cool and you cant beat the price. I was able to check out the Allentown art festival and the falls from this place. I think there are some caveats if you do stay though- 1. the parking situation is street parking, so youll have to move your car by 8 am, I ended up moving my car by 10 am on both days I parked by loading money to the meter through the buffalo roam app- it was pretty handy! 2. There are not much in terms of toiletry beyond the bare basics, so I guess get more stuff for showers/hygiene than less (this might be a hostel thing in general though, so I guess advice overall?) 3. The breakfast is just oatmeal, its not continental or anything- but they sometimes have some things out to share! Also, they have alot of utensils for cooking, so if you want to prep your own food- its pretty easy to do. But anyways, this hostel stay was pretty affordable and not too bad. It gave me more finances to really travel to the falls and spend some money that I wouldnt be able to afford otherwise. Also, the area is pretty cool to check out- they have a waffle place/ art shop/ book store 2 blocks down (Liege waffles? I think) thats pretty worthwhile to give a visit and there seemed to be alot of activites in general for the neighborhood i.e. restaurants, theaters etc. Also, they feature local artists in their galleries and sometimes have some get togethers to talk about art! All in all, definitely a cool place to check out. I wish I had more energy to enjoy it on both days, but it was pretty cool for what I experienced.

2021-12-09Dont go to a hotel if you are traveling alone or with friends. This hostel is amazing and by far the best hostile Ive ever been to with my years of traveling. You are right downtown. Ease of check in and check out our unbeatable. Clean sheets, clean towels, clean bathroom, you just cant beat this place. I will be in Buffalo one day again in this will be the only place I stay at.

2021-08-11I loved staying here. It is such a unique accommodation that staying here was an experience in and of itself which added to the charm of Buffalo. It fits snuggly in the middle theatre district and is within a short walking distance to many bars and restaurants. I loved that it was so affordable because it allowed me to use most of my budget on food and beverage. Being able to give more money to the local businesses and tip local employees more instead paying for the overpriced hotels in Buffalo was something I was happy about. The staff at this hostel is extremely friendly and knowledgeable of the area. JP, at the front desk, knew so much about Buffalo history and all the construction happening in the area. There’s a lot happening in Buffalo. I left feeling excited to come back to with some friends and having another great time. I would highly recommend staying at the hostel for a unique and enriching experience if you’re going to Buffalo.

2022-06-24The hostel provided a homely experience. Lot of memories to be made here.
