Hotel Carter in New York
Filthiest place you cannot even dream about. It has mold everywhere from the so called rooms walls to closet and bath. They have a 10 minutes refund policy no questions asked do yourself a favor and check the rooms first then run! this hotel is the perfect match to Spirit air airplanes ... not sure which one is worst but none is for people that care about their safety or health.
Please dont be scared by some of the previous unfavorable reviews. After reading them, we almost considered switching hotels; but, are so glad that we didnt. Not sure if the renovations are making the difference or if previous reviewers have a different opinion of what this hotel should be. For the price, I would give this 5 stars. Yes, there are nicer, fancier hotels with more frills; but, for the price you cant beat the Hotel Carter. Staff was friendly and very accommodating, our room was clean (no bugs), neighborhood felt safe (1/2 a block from Hard Rock), parking garage right under the hotel as well as a delightful deli on the first floor. Yes, it is a older hotel and yes the plumbing can be a little testy as it can be in any older building. The walls had layers of paint; but, does that really affect your stay? The only time there was garbage in the hall was during cleaning time (and really, what else are they supposed to do with it, wave a magic wand?). My husband and I stayed for our 2nd honeymoon. We would not even think twice about staying again and would bring our children to stay as well. Close to everything and you cant beat the price. I know I would rather not pay more for something fancier. Im there to explore NYC, not hang out in the room. If you are accustomed to and can afford places with bellhop and concierge services then you may want to pass this by. However, if you want a safe, clean, affordable NYC close to it all then be sure to check out the Carter!
If convenience is your desire, or budget is your need- this was the place. 1.5 blocks from time square cant be beat. The hotel boasts being one of the oldest and it shows. questionable elevators, small rooms with little ventilation. LOUD construction and deliveries happening all night long, and the only A/C was in the lobby.
I stayed here 10 years ago for 16 days. I heard recently from New Yorkers it was closed but to my surprise they reopened again? Anyway it was a very old school very rundown hotel but cheap for Manhattan standards and you cannot beat the very convienent location. At the end of the block is Times Square and the subway so it is perfect to use as a base to explore the rest of Manhattan or maybe even the other boroughs too if you dont mind the travelling. We stayed here so long that everyday when we came back the staff talked to us and wanted to know where we went lol. Okay this hotel is cheap and nothing fancy but hey you dont come to New York City to stay in your hotelroom right? If possible I would stay here again. It was part of the whole old school New York experience.
Booked this hotel for 3 nights. Arrived to a room that reeked of paint, filthy bedding and sheets. Workers were drilling throughout the night in the room next door, there was not even hot water! Customer service was of no use whatsoever until they moved us to another room. In the new room sheets were absolutely filthy and there was only one outlet in the room that worked ( it was in the bathroom). No working AC, no working TV. I would not recommend this hotel to anyone.
This was the worst experience I have ever had at any hotel. First, the staff was fairly rude. Second, they only provided a sheet in a freezing cold room. When I asked for a real blanket it, they said they would give me more sheets, which they never did. The sheets I did have had brown stains on them. Third, the bathroom was a closet that required squeezing past the door to use the crappy toilet. Fourth, it was so loud that I could barely sleep. Fifth, there is literally an entrance a strip club IN THE LOBBY. Guarded by what looks like discount sleezy Mafiosos. Sixth, the elevators sometimes breaks. Save your money, use Airbnb.
I have to give this hotel five stars for location and price. I booked a double room for 1 week in September and paid $800 in total. If you are looking for a hotel with high standards, top service and luxury, this one wont be the one for you.As a tourist in Manhattan for the first time, I would not spend much time in the room anyway, so it was perfect as a place to sleep at night because of the location.
The moment I entered this hotel I knew its was going to be bad! But not as bad as it really was...There were trash under my bed and in the drawer, gum sticked to the carpet, the window had a hole and the chill air of the spring made me sick, the TV had only two volumes: loud and louder, the bathroom floor was full of dirty, a couple of argentinian tourists next door had fleas in their bed....The list of horrible things can go on and on.Even 1 star is too much for this place.Stay away....
Okay to begin with, this hotel is the worst ive ever stayed in BUT you get what you pay for. And in NY you CANT get a better location (not even a worse location) for this cheap price and to be honest, how much time do you spend in the hotel?Even though the room wasnt the cleanest i had a good stay, 30 second walk to the heart of times square. Im satisfied as i only slept in the room and dropped off my shoppingbags occasially. And yes i saw ONE cockroach during my 4 day stay there and it was tiny. Our hotwater was working pefectly fine AC and TV worked perfectly too and the sheets were clean so no complaint there, a little bit noisy but hey its the city that never sleeps :)All in all i do recommend this hotel for people who arent fussy , then maybe you should save money for a few years and stay at the Waldorf Astoria..
Stayed there Jun 11 2014, to visit LIM college. Hotel was not that bad at all. It was clean, clean lining, clean bathroom, and hot water. Never believe what you read, til you experience it for yourself. Plan on using this hotel next month, Aug 2014, for my parents to stay, while they help move in for college.
I was there with my friend for a weekend and we were actually satisfied. The price was pretty high concerning the not-so-great-room and the extra-fee for a few hrs wi-fi but it was all good. I was shocked about the staff though! After checking out and heading straight to the airport, I realized I had forgotton my phone in my room and called the hotel right away from a phone, which a lady was so nice to let me borrow. I told the staff I forgot my phone and really needed it back since I had gotten it from my employers. Since we had checked out way before check-out-time I was sure the rooms had not been cleaned yet (and I double-checked with the person on the phone). Even though I gave them another number to call me on and my e-mail-address aswell as my address so they could send me the phone, they never reached out to me after that. After a few other calls and e-mails, they told me they had never found my phone. I was soo upset since I knew somebody must have had taken it. After I demanded to talk to manager of Hotel Carter, I was told they HAD FOUND my phone but could not send it to me. Even I promised to pay for the shipping they wouldnt want to do it. I had to send my friend who lived in New York at the time to go there, pick up my phone and send it to me! I am still really surprised about this terrible service and obvious lie towards me! Would never go there again for that matter!
OVER PRICED AND A UGLY HOTEL. No covers and short on PILLOWS. WARNING DO NOT GO HERE. PLEASE DONT GO HERE I had to take my whole family to the hilton thats a block away and only paid 150 there (booked online) and I got BEST VIP ROOMS. I lost 130 here for the 1st night and they didnt even refund me even though I moved to the other hotel. DIRTY HOTEL PLEASE DONT WASTE YOUR MONEY
Good service, good prices for the ideal location if youre looking to do anything in or around Time Square or Broadway, very close to many shops, eateries, entertainment, and subway stations. However, the hotel is lacking a sense of 21st Century appeal...economy rooms at their best.
It was a nice suprise to see this. Great value for money. A bit worn down but clean. Toilet and shower worked without problem. Friendly service. Lived on 6th floor facing a brickwall. Only noise heard a week sound from AC. I will gladly return to Carter. It is well spent money.
If you are looking for a hotel with pool in the basement, luxury food and a perfect view over Central park, you might be considering another hotel. But if you need a hotel just for sleeping and has a good location, this one is perfect. I booked this hotel for 7 days, and next time im visiting Manhattan, im gonna use Hotel Carter again.
BED BUG PALACE. Was put in a room on the top floor...and while I loved the view, the room hadnt seen a make-over since the 1950s. 6 channels on the TV, complete with cable hanging from the ceiling, filthy towels from the previous guests (which means the room was never FULLY cleaned), no lampshade on the lamp, and an AC unit that simply did not work. The elevator that goes to the 24th floor opens to a window that is shattered with broken glass STILL all over the balcony that is closed off. Cheap is never good when youre TERRIFIED of getting eaten alive by bugs. AVOID AVOID AVOID.
Its not tht bad . Really. I went there last October with my girlfriend we were scared too because of all the listings but being there and spending the night it was actually not bad at all we enjoy the roomit was okay Im actually going to be going back there this November for another stay I hope to get the same result
I stayed in March 2008 thanks to a reservation from the Turisberg agency in via Camozzia in Bergamo. After 2 days I managed to have the shower spray washer replaced as it was not installed. Unfortunately I could not take a shower under the flow of water directed by the metal tube. I forgot to tip the hotel plumber. Otherwise, everything is fine except a large amount of dust under the furniture and the double bed.
We have moved from 10-16 August. We were 7, three rooms, children, young people, adults and elderly so the review is very extensive! Start with prejudice. Hotel in great location in my best view of NYC and worth it just for that! The rooms (3) were quite clean and adjusted every 2 days. I think that they also read the comments, in fact cleaning made them as thrust as possible, they also threw away the bag with dirty clothes so dont leave anything out of the suitcase. For the rest, everything is really good! I repeat the area is worth all the expense of the hotel! Now the negative notes: michette 50 years ago march and therefore despite the cleanliness it stinks to disgust the hotel like the rooms like NYC itself (the first night was terrible, then with the climatizzarre a little you resolve and a little you get used to ). Given the size of the hotel there is a sort of guardian who turns and enters room x x to see if its ok and then leaves. Since he came into my grandparents room finding my naked grandmother (what a scene, haha) make sure you come in!
NEVER NEVER AGAIN! We were there in May 2012 and were immediately rejected after the flight and arrival that there was supposed to be water damage. There would be no replacement room or hotel. The manager was unavailable until TODAY. We later had to sue hotel costs through a lawyer. Absolute criminals!
I had very heavy suitcase. But all people who worked in that place disapeared as fast as they saw me. I had to drag my luggage upstairs by myself. The room also looked horrible. Everything looked very old as if didnt change since 1960s. Also the bathroom door was broken. We could not even close it at least a little bit. The smel in the room was terrible as well as everything else. And TV didnt work. The TV was made in 1960 too. I saw such old TVs only in the movies. So only one good thing about this hotel is location. In Russian. The only plus is the location. Close to the heart of New York. Cockroaches in the room. Broken, skewed toilet door. Which did not close at all. A huge window in the bathroom without a curtain. People from a nearby skyscraper examined all parts of my body. :) The furniture is old and the smell of old stuff is terrible. The TV does not work and is made in the 1960s. Everything is very shabby. And again, de COCKROACHES !!! I would not be surprised that there are bugs there.
I was there with my cousin and sister in the fall of 2014, and we had no problem with the Hotel. The maid always spends every other day, but leaves everything in order. Besides being very well located. We recommend it to anyone who wants the best location in NYC, doesnt like to stay in hostel and is looking for affordable prices.Room Tip: Rooms on lower floors will have easier access when going up and down.
The hotel is very cheap (or was). I took a bloodstained room from the curtain. Bed half clean, but the room very dirty. Place is old too. Downstairs is glued to a strip club, so at dawn you can hear the whole ballad. Worth it? It goes for those who have no money. The place is in the heart of the world. Right in the middle of new york.
I was in October 2013, knowing very well what I was going to find, a budget hotel, but with an unbeatable location-price ratio. If you are one of those who want the hotel to sleep, clean and spend money on other things on the trip, it is perfect. The room was very clean, as was the toilet.
The hotel is very basic. It is ideal for those who do not want to spend much. I was there in 2014. I dont even know if there is still lolBut the location was great, close to everything, subway, shops, sights ... But the hotel was very old and did not have much infrastructure. Id stay there again.
First and foremost, the 3 stars are linked to the Quality / Price ratio (especially the latter) paid for 6 nights!Location80 meters from Times Square .. ImpressiveSecurity: no problem during the entire stay. Anyway there are police everywhere!Home - LobbyArrived around 4 p.m.No lineRoom received (on the 12th floor) in 3 minutes. The room was between the room where the sheets are stored and the service elevators ... advantages: No noise at night! Disadvantage: room smaller than the others. After seeing the room, we go down to change it and strangely no more room available.ElevatorsIn total 3Relatively fast before 8:15 a.m.After reasonable waiting time1 down for 2 daysCorridorsin the 12th, simple; with a slight smell of insecticiderepainted walls and ceilingsWell lightedBedroom* renovated room but its still more makeup than real renovationSmall, but no more1 TV without remote control1 bedside lamp not connected2 electrical outlets in the bedroom (one next to the other)1 electrical outlet in the bathroomView on .. a wall ..Slightly noisy exterior ventilation but not too disturbingLoud noise in our friends room* Bathroom1 bath with curtain and fixed shower head1 sink + mirror with an eco lamp just above1 hook to hang 1 towel2 small towels available. We asked for 2 more on the way down and we received 3 (1 for the hair of the lady as we were told :)1 hair dryer (someone must have forgotten to bring it down)* Bedding1 bed of more or less 160 - 180 cm3 cushionsClean sheetsNo big or small beastsSlightly soft mattress for my taste but we slept well.CleaningEvery 2 daysI left a 10 euro tip on the pillow and the bed was made perfectly(whereas in our friends room the bed was not made or changed on the same day ::?)The vacuum cleaner was not passed during our entire stayStayConsidering the price, 480 EUR for 6 nights, I will not complain. We slept well (minus the first night because of everything we had read on the internet) but then fatigue took over everything else. For the next trip to New York would I go back to The Carter? In theory I will look for another hotel or an apartment as much as possible ... but we must admit that the 1,000 EUR saved compared to another hotel in Times Square (in May) were happily spent elsewhere and that its good :)DepartureWeighs available in the Lobby. Very important to be sure not to exceed the authorized kilos or on the contrary to get there by buying extra stuff at the last moment :)Suitcases left on site for USD 3 per suitcaseKey delivery in 2 seconds and thats it ...On return, suitcases collected in 2 minutes
The location was perfect but the hotel really sunny. There was some kind of green and slimy mold hanging down from the ceiling of the bathroom and the stench was indescribable. Had to change to another room with black mold on the ceiling instead. Do not go there if you are allergic!
The hotel is old, facilities of the year of the inquisition, the bathroom disgusts you, in summer, the cooling is not enough, the room is very modest, it is, in a nutshell, to get dead tired and get to sleep , get up, bathe and go for a walk. Its location is fabulous. Half a block from Times Square and half a block from the subway station that takes you to JFK airport.
Its a horrible hotel. The architecture of the 20s and 30s was completely destroyed. It was a real time travel, I could feel the atmosphere of the 30s with the smell of McDonalds oil coming in from the ventilator right outside your room. It was a nightmare then, a funny memory today. Hope you are upgrading properly now.
I was at Hotel Carter during July 2013 and I found it to be an excellent price-quality ratio, clean rooms (they did the cleaning every third day), hot water and beds in very good condition. Best of all is the proximity to Times Square, cafes, restaurants, subway stations, etc., it is a very central hotel. If I return to NYC I return to the Carter Hotel.
The first time I went I had not entered well and asked the one who cleaned for the TV control. And what he did was to steal my wallet with everything and money, cards, Id and the rest ... it goes without saying that I formed revolution and with calling the police and magic the wallet appeared with everything ...
Strengths:- Excellent location- Cheaper price compared to other hotels- Comfortable bedNegative points:- No light in the closet- Stairs to enter the hotel (it becomes complicated when you have several suitcases)- Paid WifiPlace made only for sleepingPositives:- Excellent location- Cheaper price compared to other hotels- Comfortable bedNegatives:- No light in closet- Ladder to enter the hotel (becomes complicated when you have several suitcases)- Paid WifiDone only place to sleep
I was staying in the carter from March 19 to 30, 2013 and the truth that met my expectations for the price I paid, I stayed on the 7th floor and the room was clean and freshly painted the only thing I would have needed is a change carpet but not a major problem, 32 lcd television and bathroom with perfect hot water, clean towels and sheets every day, spectacular beds, but the best and best is the location, as soon as you leave the hotel to 50 meters to the right TIME SQUARE already with that and the price can not be asked for more, next year I will go to Miami but I will spend 3 days in New York and I will stay again in the carter without doubts, I recommend it
I HAVE ALREADY BEEN IN THIS HOTEL THREE TIMES AND I AM NOTING YOUR BEST, I JUST RETURNED FROM THERE AND RECOMMEND IT, THE PLACE IS NOT A FIRST HOTEL, BUT ARE TIDY AND THE PERFECT LOCATION, AFTER HOTEL IS TO GOOD, AND THIS IT HAS GOOD, GREAT BEDS AND VERY GOOD BATH, BEING NEAR RESTAURANTS, THEATERS, SHOPPING AND BUS STATION IT BECOMES MUCH BETTER. SAVE ON DAILY AND SPEND IN CITY. IF YOU DONT HAVE FRESH THINKING THAT YOU WILL HOST IN A HILTON, CARTER IS PERFECT, I WILL GO BACK AND RECOMMEND.

2021-10-25I cannot complai-large enough room for just me,had no issues w bedbugs or anything, served its purpose in July 2005 for about $85 a night.I hope they fired the rude lady who was working there sitting at a table in lobby near front desk wearing a fake smile & she frowned at me & gave me an attitude when I asked her politely where can I checkout? Obviously she has issues. No other problems though-good deal!

2021-11-27The worst theater π experience ever! While waiting for my ticket at the ticket window, the women with the red hair was incredibly inept and partially feckless. There was some sort of game she played with her coworker at the next window. She asked, how was my ticket π« ordered? After correctly answering the question π, she informed me that my π« is being worked on... that did NOT sit πͺ well with my spirit. Now, keep in mind this was to be my fifth time going to see the play, Trouble In Mind. I passed the next few minutes outside on 42nd Street. As I return to retrieve my ticket, this time, I am assisted by the other window clerk (a male), and he asked me the same question (as if theres something nefarious was at play. As I stand there Im feeling my cortisone levels rise. He walks over to the printer π¨οΈ and proceeds to print out my ticket. The histrionics truly ensues as I go through the metal detectors. The guard/moonlighting mall constable attempts to search ππ my belongings as if he knew emphacticaly I was carrying contraband. I have nvr felt so demoralized and exceedingly embarrassed. Not only was he about to VIOLATE several civil rights; he had no PROBABLE cause to go through various departments of my belongings. This profiling was not done to anyone else in attendance attempting to enter the theater. Though, I have thoroughly enjoyed the PLAY during my previous visits...the workers and their ethos towards certain populations lets me know that they are in of racial sensitivity/diversity courses; which may aid in improving the customer experience. The irony is incredibly blatant...not much has changed on Broadway and for that matter at the Roundabout Theater π... making Trouble In Mind th@ more timely π. I wouldnt support another production there if it were π.Seat,O 110

2019-12-21Booked for only $99/night in April 2014. π€ Best possible price for the stay, only half a block away from infamous Time Square! πZero complaints. No bugs. π― Yes, it was sorta in disrepair but what did you expect?Wonderful hotel, I would come back when they had a space for me. β₯οΈ NYC

2013-12-24I was worried when I read the other reviews. I spent two nights the weekend before Christmas and I must say I was impressed. You want luxury... go waste your money elsewhere. This hotel served its purpose: someplace to rest your head after a long night in the city. Clean, pleasant smelling room, with a comfy bed, no bed bugs, a clean bathroom and plenty of hot water. The staff was pleasant. I will definitely be using this place again. I believe the other negative reviews were just over exaggerated. Trust me you will not be disappointed. There is even a cozy cafe with bargain prices for breakfast. I give it five stars because I feel it was worth every penny being that it was smack in the middle of Manhattan, the room/bathroom was clean and the staff was pleasant. Thank You Hotel Carter... see you again very soon !!!!!

2020-03-30It was excellent because of the all around experience. The exquisite room service was attequite to the price. The best part of the ordeal was the ticklish feeling I underwent at dusk that reminded me of the companionship I had of bed bugs. In a word breathtaking.

2014-09-18It was a room... Calling it a ghetto piece of S@$T would be disrespectful to ghettos. One of our rooms had a TV slightly larger than a laptop and static when trying to watch any of the channels. Washroom medicine cabinet was broken so it wouldnt stay closed. There were stains on the blankets. Hotel staff was rude and unhelpful. Door handles were slimy, the carpets hadnt been vacuumed, the toilets sprayed.... The contents when flushed. The only truth to the hotels website/description is that it is indeed close to times square.Do not recommend unless the place gets demolished.

2016-09-22Great physical location, but definitely a you get what you pay for sort of place. Rooms are dated and look and feel run down, things werent very clean, and the bathrooms were pretty dingy. I also found used underwear next to the bed. Overall though, its a secure and inexpensive place to stay, and as long as you set your expectations appropriately, its perfectly functional.

2018-09-17I was here back in June 2014 for 2 weeks. The location is very very nice. Only 2 min. walk from Times Square. The facilities is not good, but accommodation in Manhattan is very expensive so this hotel is good for the price. And when you are in NYC, you will experience the city and not stay at the hotel to much.
