How can you rate a thrift shop with any sense of consistency in regards to their wares? Ill tell you how, thrift shops are products of their neighborhoods, most of their wares come from locals, and this Housing works, with its location in the upper west side tends to have great art books, and housewares. Youll find a mix of antiques, and modern pieces reflecting the diverse nature of its surrounding community. If you want antiques, stick to the upper East side housing works, if you want fashionable pieces go to the hells kitchen location, each one has its own sort of feel and range. The beauty of the upper west side location, vs say those in three flat iron district, is there are few thrift ships around ensuring that locals drop things off here. Its a bit hit or miss, but when it hits, its pretty great.
Good place to go in and settle in for a hunt. They routinely get good designers in (like m.gemi) but its scattered in throughout, so you have to search. The staff do not always know what they have (likely because they move so much stuff that its likely impossible to keep track) but it would be nice to have someone be able to answer your questions.
We bought a beautiful Tiffany-style reproduction lamp here that was in perfect shape. Dogs are welcome in the store and this is our dogs favorite shop outside of American Apparel. They concentrate more on apparel than some of the similar shops in the area like Good Olde Things.
I’m unimpressed by this location - the prices are much higher than a typical thrift store (even in nyc!) and are more in-line with an antique store. I’ve been in this store several times and have bought something once or twice, but overall I usually find everything to be more expensive than it is worth at a “thrift” store. Today I also found a small brass candle stick I wanted to buy, but because the price tag said $15 for a “pair” and they couldn’t find the other one, they refused to sell the single to me. They said “they may find the other one somewhere in a box” at some point. Unclear about the reasoning. I would say this is a pass.
While the clothing donations to Housing Works Thrifts are all sent to a single location for pricing and redistribution the stores books, housewares and furniture donations tend to come from locals emptying their closets and refreshing their decor. While the quantity of quality clothing is now split among a lot of locations, the latter categories are where regulars can really score great bargains. That being said it does pay to check out the racks -- a couple of months ago I picked up a full length, soft black leather trench for 25 bucks. Each HW thrift develops its own niche that reflects its neighborhood. After a few bumpy years, the UWS location on Columbus is back in business with its ecclectic mix in housewares, carefully edited book seelction and quickly rotating furniture stock.
THIS IS A FASCINATING THRIFT SHOP. THE COLUMBUS AVENUE LOCATION IS ONE OF MANY. I HAVE VISITED A FEW OTHER BRANCHES AND SUSPECT THAT COLUMBUS TENDS TO GET MORE INTERESTING AND HIGHER-END MERCHANDISE. I AM CONSTANTLY ROTATING PROPERTY, DONATING AND BUYING. HARD NOT TO FIND SOMETHING THAT YOU DONT NEED AND CANT LIVE WITHOUT!

2022-02-22Love the concept of this store. They make the donations process very easy/convenient…. As far as items available, it’s obviously a hit or miss… secret is probably to go often.

2022-07-17Very nasty employee girls who work there! I was discussing with my friend if she was sure buying a body cream in a jar which was opened and looked used that sells for only $2 discounted from original price in retail stores? Then the employee girl interrupted us and said We Dont Sell Here Used Stuff!! All Our Products Are Brand New!! The Customers Opened It to Smell!! She goes telling her employees in the counter about our conversation, and gave me an angry look while talking to her employee, very agrresive 2 girls 🙍🏻♀️ are working there,so be careful if you need help they will shout at you! Not going there anymore 😞 🤷♀️ ruined my whole day!!

2022-04-06I really like the causes that Housing Works supports. They charge a premium over other thrift stores, but a lot of the times have better merchandise.

2021-12-22Omg the worst thrift store ,I live close to the store and I know how much people used to donate including myself .My husband and me work as superintendent so when sometimes tenant moves to Europe they leave the whole apt bed ,sofa, dishes , we call Housing works at Columbus 74th St .I want the place to make money , the store has less things and furniture no more donations from people sadly this is only due to nasty people working there ,now they hardly have anything in the store to sell if they do its junk and overpriced ,Today I found one jacket for man from Zara priced for 25$ a good deal 50% less from what I would pay in the store ,looked new not used ,waiting in line to pay and the salesperson with a name Michele who happened to be manager after I asked for one said ,not sorry or nothing she just ripped the ticket and said this is a womens jacket and this is not the price Bc i put it this morning by mistake ,she just wanted the jacket for herself and didnt want to sell it to me ,she thinks that jacket is worth more and the price will be tomorrow morning .I will never send a broken book in the store anymore ,there other thrift stores that will have my donations from now on . Thrift stores are also for the people in the community for our neighbors who cant afford the retail stores prices it does not have to be so expensive ,its all bc of the You tubers finding this and that and now thrift stores are with prices of French vintage stores.

2020-08-22We had an unfortunate experience there today. We came eager to donate our goods but housing Works said that they could only take two boxes. This, without any warning. No mention of it on its voicemail, which we checked before packing up boxes and driving there. My husband and I were both there, so I suggested that housing works take two from each of us (all we had was four boxes in total) It is not an insignificant effort to drive our donations to housing works. The manager, Samantha, came out and refused the simple courtesy of letting us drop off an extra two boxes, stating that this was posted on the website. Nope it was not. No actually it wasn’t -not on their voice. This is not the way to run a charitable group. You don’t extinguish peoples charitable inclinations with an odd kind of superiority. You just do the right thing. Housing Works did not.

2016-10-26This place is just such a good find! They had so many coats, name brand stuff! For really really inexpensive it made me scratch my head, and on top of that solid vintage furniture that makes me wish I had more square footage in my place. Also the ladies shoe collection is pretty on point (pardon the pun) and the service was great, the staff was really nice and helpful and attentive, you can tell they care about their clients and the energy in the space reflects that :) I will be back for sure!

2018-04-07Disappointing experience, particularly due to an employee named Christina and the older gentleman who seemed to be the manager of this Housing Works location.Over the weekend I found an item, a large item on the high end of pricing in the store, marked “auction,” and asked the very friendly weekend staff about the sale. I was kindly informed that the item (as well as the the item’s price) would be available Monday morning and that I should arrive early if I didn’t want to miss it. Well, my 14 year old niece was in town on Monday, so I brought her along with me. We arrived Monday morning 30 minutes before they opened. It was snowing pretty heavily. At 10 till, an older gentleman angrily pushed passed us and knocked on the glass door, and Christina came and opened it for him. “Hello,” I said very genuinely, “are you able to release pricing information?” Christina, flustered, harshly closed the door all but a crack and asked which item I was interested in. I told her and she responded with a scoff, “oh, that’s not even for sale.” She slammed the door, locked the locks and walked away before I could respond. We waited, and minutes later she returned to the double door entrance way, only to remain on the other side and shout a price. “What??” I responded. She simply shook her head while walking away. Finally 10:05 and they allow us in from the cold, only to be offered more scoffs, more rudeness, and avoided eye contact. Fortunately I was able to purchase the amazing item for an amazing price. Housing Works is a great company with a great cause and really fantastic finds. But this location clearly needs a new weekday opening staff.

2020-09-22The staff are friendly and helpful.I respectfully suggest they need a person to upgrade the look of the store with retail experience.Attractively displaying the donations will help to sell the items.Put merchandise in groups. Example cds DVD’s are overstocked and lumped together.I have occasionally improved the display on shelves. Can’t help it. I was in retail.I donated a large bag of classical cds, symphony, piano, opera. Give that group a dedicated space and they will sell.Example, I donated a cased two volume set, large, heavy, therefor it was put out separately and sold immediately for $50.Maybe a table “featuring” some of the more attractive items would generate sales.

2021-06-11I never leave reviews, but I had such a terrible experience with Tina from this location. I tried to ask her a question, but she kept cutting me off and telling me she couldn’t help. I even offered to leave my number so somebody who could help could call me and she refused. It was very embarrassing all around.
