Great restaurant with excellent service and attentiveness! I noticed there were a number of people dining indoors—too many for my liking—and they allowed us to dine in the patio area up front which is a covered, heated area. Staff was attentive and responsive, the atmosphere and food was great. I highly recommend and plan on dining there again.
Ended up getting lunch here unplanned. Luckily we were able to get a table without a reservation. I figured the food would be a bit more expensive because we were in the garden, but honestly we got what we paid for: everything was really delicious. The ambience of the restaurant is excellent as well.
It was one of my favorite place! . Chef and menu changed..I invited my friends yesterday and I was embarrassed. Awful. Service from start to finish was not good. Food was HORRIBLE and took two hours to come. The service was extremely poor. At the end we order coffee and was serve without a saucer, and waiter claimed they don’t have clean saucer. Very sad that such a beautiful place can’t serve a nice lunch.
The staff were very nice and accommodating. However, my friend and I both ordered the Hudson burgers and my other friend had soup. After eating both myself and my friend that had the burger had really bad stomach pains. My friend went to the bathroom almost immediately. I however just had bad cramps. Now in sweating and praying I make it home in time. Its safe to say we had food poisoning from the burgers. We did not share food and aside from crackers that was all I ate today.
It was a 90 degrees day and my husband and I were hungry, thirsty, and tired from walking through the garden for half the day. We had not made a reservation earlier because the official NYBG brochure advertising the restaurant says walk-ins welcome. The hostess condescendingly asked if we had made a reservation before and then when we nodded a no added rather impolitely Im sorry but you have to sit outside in the sun and pointed to a table outside without even an umbrella. Its not like they would have charged us less had we chosen to sit at the table, risking getting a heatstroke. It is unethical to condescendingly offer sub-par service to customers who dont look like they belong to NY high society and insult them like this. Maybe remove the walk-ins welcome from the brochure? We both walked out without a word.
After walking a great deal viewing the gardens, we were delighted to have lunch here. The terrace is just gorgeous overlooking the gardens. The hostess and server were very pleasant and attentive. The food was absolutely delicious and healthy. It was quick and we were able to get back out and finish with our tour. I would highly recommend this place and would have reservations for sure on the weekend.
If you are looking for a healthy meal this is not the place. Their fish is not wild caught quality so we ended up ordering a chicken entrée thinking we order on the safe side. How could they go wrong with chicken? The only thing that was edible in this dish were the beautifully prepared toppings. For appetizers we ordered an outstading salad. The ambiance is very cool and the decor quaint.
A garden is a special place, where one can refresh and enjoy nature’s finest. Place a restaurant inside the garden and pure joy! The Hudson Garden Grill is light and airy, not too large, but big enough and an enjoyable menu of different foods for a light lunch (or heavy if your pocketbook allows). Service is friendly and appropriate and the setting is lovely and beautiful. Stop by when at the Gardens (reservations recommended)
A nice upscale bistro/grill right in the center of the NY botanical gardens. We were going to hit author Ave for Italian, but this was way more convenient. They have gluten free and vegan options. All our meals were top quality. I have the seasonal butternut squash soup, and creamy quinoa veg dish which was fantastic. Others ordered burgers and crab cake, which looked great as well. My portion was small for the price, but it was well presented and delicious, so I didnt mind. Prices are on the high side, but hey, its NYC, and its very convenient if your in the park. Ill be going back here.
The restaurant is located on the grounds of the New York Botanical Garden, which is such a treat if youre visiting the garden for any of their excellent exhibits. The Stephen Starr restaurant (hes behind Upland, Clocktower and Le Coucou) bears his usual formula: a stunning space and excellent food. The ingredients are all sourced locally from the Hudson Valley so the menu changes with the seasons. I ordered the tuna, which was seared medium rare per my request, to perfection. Presentation is great, and you cant beat the view!
I was actually really surprised by how good the food was here. I didnt expect much to be honest since it was in the garden - very little competition so no reason for it to be good - but it was! They were a bit understaffed so we had to wait maybe 10 minutes to order but it wasnt really a problem. I got the veggie burger and my husband had the chicken sandwich. I can only vouch for these two items on the menu but my veggie burger was shockingly good. Like, next time I go back to the garden the main attraction will be eating that veggie burger again! My husband really liked his chicken sandwich as well.
After walking around the botanical gardens in the hot sun I thought Id give this restaurant a try. From the inside the place looks great....thats about it! The food itself was okay and honestly would give this four stars.....but the waitress was terrible. Now Ive worked in restaurants before and one thing Ive always been on point with is service! Making sure your customers are good with orders, drinks, ect. My server greeted me as well as took my order and thats about it! No asking if I needed refills or even if I was okay with the meal!! There was an elderly couple next to me and another women beside them and they were treated with excellent service by the same waitress. This Waitress passed me about 8 times before I had to flag her down and when I told her how long I was waiting for she simply said that we shouldve asked the other Waiters that were working......guess what? She was the only one in our section. If there were more Waiters/Waitresses available trust me this review would end on a positive note. Wont be returning to this restaurant ever again
Its a good place to get a nice meal while walking in the NYBG. They try to use as much as possible from their own gardens in the food they have, and they have an ever changing menu. They are the more expensive option on the gardens, but the food options are nicer. The staff is always friendly.
We were three for lunch, I must say I was pleasantly surprised how good the food was! The menu is very limited and written in a manner that sounds boring so we all ordered with reluctance. It was such a surprise that the food was excellent! Chef quality. I had the chicken sandwich, it had cheese, bacon, tomato, etc with a delicious spread on the bread and a salad. My friend had a veggie burger, delicious! My other friend had crispy chicken on a bed of salad, delicious too! The dessert was just sherbet and fruit, but OMG it has some sort of sauce with it that MADE THE DISH unbelievable. We were completely satisfied as we have a thing for dessert! We recommend!
Not very many vegetarian options! Had to order mostly sides to create a meal or get a salad. I had the monkey bread which was really good, fries which were average (nothing special), the Gnocci which was forgettable and the Corn succotash which was terrible. For drinks I had the pineapple ginger lemonade which was all ginger no pineapple. The cuba libre for dessert was half fantastic half too sour. The chocolate cigar was fantastic but the lime thing in the cup was was SUPER sour. If you like sour this is for you. If Not, stay away!! This place was less than memorable. Not suited for vegetarians.
Not a very good experience at this restaurant. Service was poor from the host and waitress. Appetizers were never put in and food came out ~40 minutes after we ordered it. We ended up skipping the appetizers because we were so hungry and didn’t want the other food to sit under a heat lamp. Ordered the veggie burger but for $19 I would have liked something a bit more significant than what seemed like a morning star patty. Other food looked good though. Complimentary dessert was offered for the mistakes, and I thank them for that on a customer service point of view. Overall I think this place could be excellent if the staff had closer monitoring from a supervisor or leader checking on tables, the food was priced more fairly and had a bit more to it.
Food, meh; service awful, prices too high for pub style food. We waited 45 minutes after ordering for our food to arrive, were double charged for our bread order, and my soup never arrived. The entrees were mediocre, and the waitress checked in with us only once the entire time we were seated. No water, no How is everything? ... and the restaurant was far from crowded. That, plus $25 on average for an entree at lunchtime? Pass on this one, NYC has plenty of great food.
Fairly nice food but not the best service. We were sat in the entry way next to the very noisy front desk and kitchen. We asked to be moved to a quieter table a couple of times but the staff were not very helpful. It was a shame as it’s a nice restaurant but we just couldn’t enjoy it.
What an amazing restaurant! Besides the beautiful decor the setting in the botanical gardens is so serene and gorgeous. The wait staff is extremely friendly and helpful with menu suggestions. Lastly (and most importantly) the food is absolutely incredible.....not kidding!!! Make a point of eating here if you have the opportunity rather than a local restaurant (sorry local businesses!!)
Lovely setting in the garden with big, arching windows looking out at lawn and trees. It is a pretty room in a mildly feminine style with whitewashed wooden walls and blue plaid tablecloths. Food was quite good. I liked the pork bao but it needed a little more spice to it. Hamburger was too big and gooey and the bun wasnt up to the task. The bun pretty much disintegrated leaving us to eat it with a fork. Cocktails were OK but weak. My biggest issue however, would be the rushed service. Cocktails came out with first course (I want my cocktails delivered BEFORE the food.) And the mains came out before we had even finished the first course. Very annoying and I think there was some failure to communicate between the runner, waiter and kitchen, because the waiter appeared chagrined by this as well.
Really loved this place in the past, we always came here for lunch before the holiday train show. Today’s meal was incredibly underwhelming. Artichokes were drowned in a mediocre pesto, crab cake was very dry and tasted like it was too old to be served, butternut squash farro was almost flavorless. This restaurant can and should do better, especially at this very high price point.
The chef has made American Classic fair from around the country to an elevated, elegant, and exciting deliciousness. Service excellent and works well with young children. When visiting the gardens it worth having reservations and enjoy the beauty of the gardens with the beautiful food and decor of the grill and this stupendous chef!
Delicious fresh and creative food. Loved the Buffalo cauliflower. The Cuban sandwich didnt meet my fiancés Florida standards but was tasty. My lemon sage pasta was delicious. We also had cocktails which were very good. The atmosphere is lovely with big windows looking out on the garden and fresh bright decor. Perfect for a lunch date.
Food was delicious, cooked perfectly and presented with care and true artistic vision. Service staff were professional, prompt, informative and knowledgeable. This dining experience was in ALL ways comparable to any Manhattan restaurant at any price. The best value Ive found in a long time.
The food arrived 1 hour after we placed the order. It also took them a long time to take our order. We were sited at 11:50 and received the food at 1:10. The kids were starving by the time the food arrived and the burgers they received were just 2 buns with the meat patty in the middle. Otherwise the food was good and the complimentary bread was incredibly delicious. I wish I had just ordered from this bread. I was also glad we sat outside - inside was an air-conditioned freezer. Ive had great experience there before they made it a fancy restaurant.
Usually, the food is reliable. Today I ordered the lobster roll. It is described as warm on the menu and as being served with fries. It arrived with potato chips, which I did not want. The meat itself was teppid at best and had nothing on it. No butter, no dressing, nothing. It was totally bland. The roll was a hard roll, not the usual soft, buttery roll lobster is usually served on. It wasnt warm either, just slightly stale. The final insult is the price. Steer clear.
Contrary to some of the reviews, the serving sizes for the entrées were pretty standard for a restaurant. Ill even say they were a little larger than most restaurant lunch portions. However, its true that the prices are quite high. Quality was decent. We had a good experience overall.
This place is off the charts. I loved the service and the food is meticulously prepared in a way that makes eating more than just an action. Its an experience and if you are looking at the botanical garden as your wedding venue then you want to eat here to get an idea of what quality of food your guests will be enjoying
We went on a fairly quiet day and had outstanding service and food. A little pricy, but worth the value. While not the best place for children, they went out of their way to make sure we had a great family dinning experience. An unexpected and delicious surprise on our NYBG visit.
The lobster bolognese is excellent, according to one of my companions. When crispy, the French fries are very good, too.The omelet and the chicken paillard are both mediocre. Mixed drinks are ok.Our waitress was incredibly slow. Incredibly. The bussers were actually outstanding. I think this place should review the staff and see if some role changes might be in order.Next time I go to the New York Botanical Garden, I will skip this place.
Just had lunch here and everything was perfect. Went with the Hudson Burger with fries that didnt taste like frozen fries and the burger was cooked exactly as I ordered it. Enjoyed a side of brussel sprouts with bacon. My friend had the egg and ham sandwich which she said was perfect and looked it too.The space is nice and airy with tall ceilings white walls and big windows facing the landscaped grounds and trees of the garden. You feel as if youre almost outdoors.Pricey but worth it.
Service was great. Came during the Burle Marx exhibit. The Brazilian themed menu was great in theory but horrible in execution. The pork sausage was basically keilbasa. The pao de quiejo was awful. Tostones as a side? Come on. Anyway, the most appealing dish ordered by our group was a burger, and if we wanted burgers we could have gone anywhere else. Im sure they have great seasonal menus but they really dropped the ball with this one and Im not sure Id risk coming back, considering how expensive it was.
Very nice hostess (Thank you Jaylin) .& servers but food was only fair and overpriced. At $27 for Bronzio I received a very small piece of overcooked fish. If not for the bread and butter I would have left hungry. I had to return a gummy rice pudding which the server removed from the check. Last years visit was far more satisfying. .. New cook ?
When we first arrived, the maitre d told me how happy he was to see me, as we were the last reservation of the day (what?).Service was poor- I looked at an empty table full of dirty dishes for about 20 minutes. They shoved my entree in front of me when I wasnt done with my app, and then never took my app plates away. There were times when there was no one on the floor at all. I understand its the end of the shift & people want to go home, but Im paying the same price as someone who came at the beginning of the day.The food was ok for the price, but if the ambiance leads me to believe theyre aiming for great service, theyve missed their mark.I wont return- I would rather try something in the neighborhood.
OK food and good service.. ask for Collin and follow his advise. Last year thr Sea scallops were amazing! The bomb is the dessert to order. Yesterday the new menu had a $32 crab cake over sandy boc Choy! The waiter acknowledged another customer had complained but did not make a price adjustment. Forget the upsidr down mess of a banana split ... cheap chocolate surup @ Pricy for an upscale ($120 lunch) uneven dining experience. Skip it.
The food was delicious if a little over priced- taking stars out because after our plates came our waiter never ever returned- we were short a set of utensils, had no salt and pepper and other tables were too packed for us to borrow. I asked for a substitution due to an allergy and received a half portion at full price. At one point we tried to get more utensils and an extra drink from a busser who came by to take some plates and he refused to help us and said we should ask our (completely absent) server instead. Disappointing compared to previous experiences.
Had a very upsetting experience just before the Mothers day. Reserved a table outside for a family. Waited for over an hour just to find out they can only seat us on the sun while two tables in the shade have some special reservation. The hostess, Jayleen(not sure its correct spelling) was very rude. Did not even try to explain anything just refused to give us a table. I know theyre busy today and dont care but it is not the way to treat customers. I used to love this place. Not any more.
Watch out for the grilled salmon - they forgot to mention that it is wrapped in bacon. Im a Jew and dont eat meat so it was a double whammy for me. We also ordered the beet salad and French fries which never arrived. We didnt mention it because after the bacon incident we just wanted to leave.
Deserts, and coffee!! Sometimes they have delicious vegetarian options. They had delicious mango Tres le-Ches, monkey bread, chocolate bomb, and once we were lucky when they were serving butternut squash pasta. I wish they were more consistent with 20% -40% vegetarian options.
DISGUSTED with the head chef of this restaurant- would not swap fried chicken for grilled chicken on a SIMPLE COBB SALAD for a customer with Celiac Disease because it was not how he envisioned the dish. Cant believe they allow that kind of customer service, will NOT be returning.
I dont recommend you to go to this place. The way they assign the table was awful. We were told to come back at certain time, but when we came back, we were forced to wait much longer. Their answer was that they were arranging a table. How long does it take to arrange one table??

2022-05-04Decent comfort American food for a decent price. to be honest if you’re visiting the botanical gardens this is just a really nice added experience. The building itself is so gorgeous and you see out to the garden and just the vibe itself was so right. I mean you wouldn’t come here for amazing food it’s pretty much just your basics with some seafood thrown in. Highly recommend making a reservation. But nothing special just a cute lunch place.

2022-01-03Located inside the NY Botanical garden, this is an excellent choice for having a meal while visiting the garden. The restaurant is small, so reservation is highly recommended. They do have a beautiful interior. The menu is small and precious. Items are on pricier side, but they do make em well. We liked the ricotta a lot for appetizers. The pulpo (octopus) was the best entree. Octopus was cooked to perfect tender, didnt taste like rubber. Chicken breast was also well made. The burger was decent. The lamb pasta dish was okay for me, but I felt adding some shredded cheese could have enhanced the dish.Overall we had a really good lunch. The service was top notch. We would not mind dining here again when we visit NYBG next time.

2022-04-30Honestly didn’t have very high expectations since cafes in museums/gardens are usually average at best. Hudson Garden Grill is a pleasant surprise. Food is more serious than I thought it would be. Some ingredients seem to be farm-to-table? Interior includes elements from the botanic garden. Visited many times and never disappointed so far. Usually crowded on weekends so reservation is recommended.

2022-07-11Food and service were excellent. This place is a bit pricey but it is inside the Botanical Gardens. I ordred the Lil Gem Cesar Salad with Chicken and it was very good. Our server was polite and very attentive. I give this restaurant 4.6 stars.

2021-10-14Lovely restaurant in the NY Botanical gardens. Reservations are recommended. Indoor and outdoor seating available.Exquisite menu. The Hudson burger is quite good as is the crispy chicken sandwich. Very generous portions. There was a butternut squash soup with coconut foam, truffle oil and roasted pine nuts which was exquisite.Fine cocktail selection including mimosa and bloody Mary. Good selection of bottled beer.Nice ambiance complete with artwork of the gardens and vaulted ceilings.Service was a bit slow, and the menu a bit pricey. This restaurant is an asset to the NYBG. Its a great lunch spot after a long day of walking at the gardens. Ill be back on my next visit.

2022-07-06This place was very confusing for me to rate. The place is situated within the NY Botanical garden and has an amazing outdoor patio surrounded by the garden. The decor and food itself is beautiful and well done as far as an execution standpoint. But the “salad” was a fried piece of chicken with a couple of dressed leaves on top. Maybe it’s a demographic difference issue, but that was not a salad. Otherwise, beautiful place and food all around.

2022-04-17Such a nice surprise! As a restaurant in a tourism destination we didn’t really have much expectations. However they surprised us in a good way. Very reasonably priced and food tasted really good. Highly recommended!!!

2022-06-13I always grab a bite here after I visit an exhibition, event or just cause. The menu changes seasonally and they always have good choices especially if people in your party have dietary requirements. I got the special, which was filet mignon with roasted potatoes, broccoli rabe and truffle sauce, and someone else at my table got the vegan carrot schnitzel, both were delicious! 🙂

2021-05-16I just want to say outright that the service here is 0/10. I’m giving 1 stars only because the food was somewhat good. When we first walked to the hostess we were interrupted by a manager trying to get his friends a table. Granted, I understand but he at least could’ve said excuse me. We were absolutely starving so of course we sat here outside to dine. We waited about an hour for our table, & then about another 30 minutes to just place our order. Our waiter looked extremely overwhelmed. We felt bad, whoever is the manager of this restaurant should’ve been walking around to ensure his or her staff doesn’t need any help. Thankfully, the food came out pretty quickly. Started with the shrimp cocktail which is okay, I personally wouldn’t order this again. The shrimp wasn’t cleaned properly, & the guac mixed in the sauce was bland. The chicken was also just alright, but again I was starving so I finished the whole thing. My boyfriend got the burger & again, was just okay & he only finished it because he was practically dying of hunger. The only amazing thing was the French fries.

2022-06-20Ive been meaning to write this review for a while. I went here a couple weeks ago and I have to say the service was absolutely impeccable. They found us a table outside even though we didnt have a reservation. The staff was above and beyond so nice. I think this was the best service Ive ever had. Also given the location I thought the prices were very reasonable. Food was good. I enjoyed the beer salad with grilled chicken.
