Hunan Slurp used to be my favourite place. But unfortunately after todays event I have to strongly advise against this restaurant if you have food allergies. We have made calls to the restaurant prior to making a reservation to confirm they can accommodate peanut allergy, and double informed our server of the peanut allergy. One person in our party had a serious reaction. The waiter said there were not physical visible peanut pieces. This is a poor understanding of food allergies. Even a trace could cause scary consequences. It does not need to be a visible piece. I urge the restaurant to look into their current process in the kitchen and communication amongst staff to exercise their basic duty of care for their customers.
I usually don’t write reviews, but this is the worst dining experience i’ve had in a while. I usually don’t care about service as long as the food is good but first of all, all the popular items were sold out which was about half the menu but ok maybe thats my fault. I came at 8 pm on a Saturday and they close at 9:30pm. Either way, when we did order, our first dish took 20 minutes to come, then the next dish took another 30 minutes. Before half our dishes even came out they asked us if we wanted anything else because the chef was going home. The food came and it was extremely overpriced for the amount of meat that was in there. The beef dish had almost no beef, mostly celery and the beef was sliced like the size of a worm and impossible to find. The duck dish was basically all bones and no meat for 33 dollars. Much better Chinese restaurants around the area. Would not come again.
Their dishes are adopted from traditional dishes but added some more interesting stuff to them. The 擂辣椒 is definitely a must try. Usually the dish is threaded pepper with eggs and spices, but they added fried salty yolk and turned the flavor into a amazing mixture. Their ginger chicken is a little bit too sweet (and not spicy enough) to be called a genuine Hunan dish, but the spices really taste like things I would eat in China. The soup for their noodles are a little bit too bland for my taste. I think Silky Kitchen has more flavorful soup. Dont come here if you are just for the noodles. Make sure you try out at least one or two other dishes.
Interior is contemporary, I like the fact that they use fresh flowers to decorate all tables. Host/waiter is really attentive. For food, the presentation is good, but the taste is more fusion style than authentic Hunan style. (The taste is more on a sweet, vinegary side. If you like it, you like it.)Portion is generous.
Im not from Hunan but all my Hunan friends love this place so I guess its quite authentic? :DThe owner is very passionate about the business, he creates specials for different seasons and spends time to talk to his customers. Hes more about sharing the food he loves with the a broader audience rather than making a profit.Best of luck and hope there will be a LIC location soon!
Environmental and decoration is very nice, it is not like the old style Chinese restaurant. The atmosphere is modern and enjoyable.Food is great, as a Chinese, I like the creative and the real Chinese food here, especially I like the hunan rice noodle! Highly recommended! 💛I also like the duck tongue and green beans soup in this restaurant!Staff is good, and I went there several times without reservations. Maybe the weekend or dinner time will need reservations since the restaurant space is not huge. All in all, love this place.
HOMETOWN LU FEN RICE NOODLE WITH SLICED BEEF, CHAR SU, PEANUT, CUCUMBER L, BEAN CURD AND CRISPY SOY BEAN IS EVERYTHING 😋🤤 LOVE THAT PERFECTLY SOFT BOILED EGG. Also tried the skewered beef (small pieces of beef on a toothpick), sweet and sour spare rib, smashed cucumber and cherry tomato marinated in plum sauce - the last one surprised me because I wasn’t expecting it to be fantastic and it was incredible. Can’t wait to go back already
I love everything about this place! Upon entering, you are fully immersed into an extraordinary space where no detail is left unconsidered. From the overarching wooden slat interior design, the marble tables, ceramic and metal serving ware, to the floral touches all around. Food is without exception too. The appetizer consists of poached and skinned cherry tomatoes bathed in a fruity broth. Rice noodles are al dente, plentiful, and sit under assortment of accompanying ingredients. I cant wait to come back and try out the other concoctions.
Hunan Slurp is a tasty casual chic restaurant featuring Hunan style noodles and small bites. We arrived at 7:30PM on a Tuesday with no wait. Note Hunan Slurp was completely BYOB when we ate there, but now has wine and beer as well.We started with the Organic Cucumber and Hunan Salad (Grilled pepper and eggplant, preserved duck egg, soy sauce and sesame oil dressing). Both were delicious with the Cucumber coming out as my preferred of the two.Next we each ordered a different noodle dish, my choice being Hometown Lu Fen (Sliced beef, char su, peanut, cucumber, tofu). The Le Fun was good! Nothing extraordinary, but definitely satisfying. All in all, I would say Hunan Slurp was well received, a tad pricey, but not awe-inspiring. Would I come back? Yes.Come here for a causal/chic noodle experience that is satisfying. Good for a catch up with an old friend. Maybe not the place to show off to a new date.
I loved the interior design of this restaurant. It was very pretty. The lighting, slatted wood walls, and long dining tables really opened this space up. Also, as a side note, one of our guest stated the bathroom was cute!We had a reservation for 8, and the restaurant was full when we got there. However, we got the best table by the window, and although some of our party were late, they were very accommodating. They let us sit, and order drinks and appetizers while we waited. I appreciated this small gesture, because most restaurant today are very strict with time, and you could lose the whole reservation if your party isnt on time.Additionally, the menu was creative, and from the appetizers (cold dishes on menu), to the main entrees, everything was expertly cooked and amazing! The photos attached just show a portion of what was placed on the table! The cold dish shown is the Cucumber smash salad, but we ate edamame (seasoned differently than most Asian restaurants, please try them, they are worth it), and shredded potatoes (spicy), as well. For my main entree, I chose Chili Octopus, which was spicy. It also was a large portion, Im not sure my photo did it justice. If you order this, dont fill up on appetizers lol. I definitely brought most of it home.Lastly, we drank Wangzai Milk, pure sugar, but very tasty. Also, if you have an infant they can provide a high chair. The waiters were attentive, friendly, informative, and funny. It was a fun, and fulfilling night! Go if you want to experience different options in Asian cuisine (Chinese), beautiful decor, and if you have a large party, or just want to impress your date (friend or other lol). The vibe is cool and mellow, but with a lot of style!
Disappointed, I read a review on Grub Street and decided to try the restaurant when we went to New York.Very cute restaurant in the East Village. We sat in front of the open kitchen. They dont have a license to sell alcoholic so I was able to go across the street to a convenience store to buy beer and bring it back.We ordered Smoked Pork that was Stir Fried with Smoked Bean Curd, it was ok. String Bean Mifen, Pickled, Diced and Stir Fried with Berkshire Pork and Chili, good. Hometown LU FEN Noodles with Sliced Beef, Char Su, Peanut, Cucumber, Bean Curd, and Crispy Soy Bean, best dish of all.The Ribs in a Black Bean Sauce were extremely disappointing. They were nib lets of ribs, not what we expected.Once was enough.
Do I love this place ? Absolutely!Authentic and delicious!Recommend the rice noodle and check the spicy level at the menu so if you cant eat spicy you will find the rice noodle without one.Great selections and nice ambiance great great taste. Cant ask for more.Definitely one of the best Hunan style food from China.
Top tier chinese restaurant in Manhattan. Probably the best high end traditional Hunan place. Owner is from Hunan and really understands the state of art when it comes to modern chinese cuisine. The menu changes occasionally but the 冬瓜,茄子,丝瓜,衡阳火爆蛙,香菜小椒牛肉丝 are all great.Service and ordering can be a bit chaotic / confusing... but that said the food is definitely worth it.Highly recommend a visit.
We ordered two rice noodle dish. One is dry noodle with three kinds of meat and half boiled egg. The other one has fish with soup and noodle separately. The fish soup was in a clay pot. Both the broth and the fish meat were tasty and fresh. I also like the eggplant dish. Even though the eggplant tasted a little bit raw but the idea to stuff it with aged egg purée was very creative! Overall it presented some traditional Chinese food in a nice and pricey way.
The staff was nice but the food was the worst food I’ve eaten in a while. Tasteless food disguised with spice. Unfortunately when we went to the toilet we could see the kitchen - a mess and dirty. I regret spending one of my four nights in New York in this restaurant. Definitely do not recommend.
Don’t let the slick interior and contemporary decor fool you, the rice noodles here are as authentic as they come. The fish fillet with mifen alone was worth the 4-hour drive to Manhattan from upstate New York, where I happened to be at the time. I also had the organic cucumber, a timeless side dish that was well executed, and the Hunan salad, which was beautifully presented and had a delightful combination of flavours. Would definitely go back for round two.
One of the best authentic Hunan food in the city. Hunan salad is a tasty starter with more than you can image flavor in the mouth. The hometown noodle, and fish fillet rice noodle are so good and tasty, as a guy literally from Hunan, I would highly recommend this place. Plus the location is great, east village and near SOHO.
This place probably has my favorite frog legs and noodles. Ive had this restaurant on my radar for quite a while, so when I had the opportunity to check it out, I knew I had to take it.The inside is insanely gorgeous. Modern and chic, you would never expect it to be a Chinese redtaurant. That definitely did not take away from the genuine flavors that burst in each dish. The bowls were aesthetic, and its a great place to eat a meal with a few friendsWe ordered the Hometown Lu Fen, which combined all flavors and textures together in a warming bowl of noodles, perfect for an overcast day. The frog legs brought back memories of home, completely authentic and spicy. The cabbage also surprised me with its amazing flavoring.I really dont have anything bad to say, as it was a pleasant experience. Because its in an area I dont frequent often, I dont think Ill be returning unfortunately.
I reserved a table at 8pm on Tuesday which is not even close to their close time 9:30pm. However more than half of the dishes on the menu are out of stock. They only open from 5 to 9:30, coming in at 8 with everything I wanna order is not in stock really impact my dinning experience a lot. The food was decent, the price is not very beautiful.
This is a very nice place to rice noodles. Also the spicy dishes are delicious. I really enjoy the spicy steamed fish. But their seat arrangement is super inefficient, they can easily make more money by optimizing the seats and bar inside and also make the customer happier for the waiting time.
Excellent! The food is excellent. The staff was really nice and attentive. The interior design is well-considered down to the utencils.I dont know much about actual authentic Chinese food but my Chinese friends say this is one of the best places in NYC that theyve had for real Hunan food!
Not great. the cumin beef was served with each piece of meat on an individual toothpick. not sure why, but this seemed to me the equivalent of adding bones to boneless meat. pork noodles were immensely spicy though only labeled with a single pepper. Tastes were mostly just salty. The beef was dry and just a single cumin flavor.Overall, takeout quality with higher prices. Come for the nice atmosphere and clean bathroom.
The noodles and Hunan Charcuterie were really good! Unfortunately the pacing of the food served was a little off, as 2/3 dishes came extremely quickly, while we were left to wait much longer for the last noodle soup. Food is amazing and the service is great, but probably a little overloaded given how busy it was when we went.
I love the way this place looks. Its very stylish inside and a lot of thought has gone into the design and the appointments. Even the pen when we paid our check was complimenting the decor of the restaurant. We didnt have a lot of food. It was a chilly night in New York so we had the noodle soups thinking it had to be the highlight because the place is called slurp. I had the three Delicacies which I thought was fine but nothing special. It had pork. Mushrooms, fungus, and an egg. The most interesting thing was an a cake with bean vermicelli in it. I co-diner had the vegetarian one. It was pretty bland, but it was full of vegetables. The worst part was the noodles which were overcooked with an uninteresting texture. The best thing was the smashed cucumber salad. If you want exciting noodle soup stick to Ramen
Hunan Slurp has great ambience and is a nice restaurant, but the food was underwhelming. We got the mapo noodles and the sesame noodles. It was a bit bland and the mapo noodles tasted weird because of the chickpeas. The one highlight was the water spinach, which was garlickly and delicious :)
The food is faithful to its origin but the ingredients are a little cheap, especially the meat and the fish. The string bean tastes like from a frozen package. Service was good and attentive. The vibe here is somewhat similar to a Chinese malls restaurant, trying to be fancy and hip but achieve neither. And the price is way too high for the quality. In my opinion, Id enjoy the food much more if it was a more down-to-earth place like those hole in the wall restaurants in Chinatown. Ok Ok its East Village but maybe someone can put on a better Spotify playlist instead of the elevator piano or top ten pop from 2010...
IMPORTANT REVIEW of horrific and forceful dining experience below. As first timers, we asked our waiter to help us out with the menu. We clearly specified one diner, Samantha, is not great with spicy food. We asked if we could order a dish not spicy and he said we were able to order the Chicken dish non spicy but NOT the Beef and Pepper dish. He advised the beef and pepper noodle soup we order would be fine (his exact use of words). As customers do, we trusted the staff at hand. The moment the soup was placed down and one single sip of the broth was taken. Myself, who is EXTREMELY experience and enjoys very spicy food was beside myself uncomfortable. As one would normally do at any other dining establishment in New York City, I asked to send it back.We inquired if we could replace this $18.00 dish with one of the SAME price as we were hungry and wanted to try something else. Our waiter, did in fact take our dish from our table which in any dining environments, indicates it would be removed from the bill because he took it away without discussing anything that would soon happen next. The manager, SHUN, came to speak with us where it really began to become a comedy show at this point of how we were being treated.Shun explained how we would HAVE to pay for the meal we sent back immediately. The best he could do would be to take 10% off the dish returned or he could MAKE A NEW ONE (no spicy). But we could NOT order a different $18 dish even though Shun was going to make a brand new one.Why couldnt we order a non spicy dish from the start an hour earlier? Why couldnt Shun make a different dish if he was going to prepare one from the start? Why would the item simply not just be completely removed from our bill when it was removed from our table within seconds?Shun REPEATEDLY stated I know this makes no sense, but this is what is happening, i know it makes no senseWe were not even given ANY explanation, rules or regulations, this was purely based on utter disrespect.
The food and decorations really impreesed me.If you like spicy food or want to try authentic Chinsese food, this is the gem you need to try, the Skewed Beef and Beef Rice Noodle(reeeaally spicy!) are strongly recommended.I just cant describe how much I enjoyed when I found the taste is almost the same as that in China! They also provide special and tasty ice creams that a New Yorker must try XD
The best thing about Hunan Slurp is the silverware. Absolutely beautiful spoons. However, it goes downhill from there.I went to the bathroom to wash my hands. Aesop hand soap and lotion- very nice. Except they were both empty and had been refilled to the top with water! Even the lotion bottle! And this was not “add a little water to get the dregs off he bottom, it’s still soapy anyway.” Plain water, not a drop of suds. Very bad sign...Unto the food itself- the menu is written so inelegantly and the descriptions so inaccurate, it is impossible to order a meal correctly. For example, what’s described as “Hunan Salad (roasted pepper, eggplant, duck egg)”, is actually a stuffed eggplant appetizer, with no roasted pepper and stuffed with something like peanut butter! Maybe it’s duck egg Vitamixed with peanut butter.Next, a dish is described as “Chicken Feet (braised and tossed with chili oil)” while right under it, the “Hunan Charcuterie” is described as “tripe, tongue, pigs ear”. So you order it thinking no chili oil, bc why would they mention It’s right above, and say nothing on this one, in this wanna be fancy establishment that is twice as expensive than Madame Hao Noodles, which is five times as good! And of course it comes completely covered with chili oil. Annoyed, I asked for a bowl of water and I just put the pieces of meat in there to wash them off. At no point did the waiter inquire if everything was okay. $40 for two failure dishes.
I understand this place tries to look like a “fancy” restaurant, so they placed a host behind the door to question if you have reservations even it’s half empty. But given the simple options on the menu, I would never wait for some noodle joint that’s not even full on a Friday night. Host girl very unprofessional and failed to even mention a estimated waiting time. Walked away for better options on St Mark Pl.
The two dishes ordered were a bit of a mixed bag: the three delicacies rice noodles ($16) were delicate and flavorful but the garlic pork ribs fall special ($26) was deep fried in sweet batter and tasted like something out of a state fair ultimately undermining the entire meal to the point that its very unlikely Ill give this place a second chance even though some of the dishes at other tables looked appetizing.
Very bad dining experience. After we were seated, we ordered three dishes. After waiting for an hour, one dish was served. The next door ordered three dishes later than us. We ordered one dish earlier, and no one was there. Its up to you, the kitchen can be seen. The observation is that the chefs need to wait for the dish to reach a certain number and finish frying the dish at one time. If you are unlucky, you will order a dish that no one else has ordered in the entire restaurant. , you wait, wait for those concentrated orders to finish they may do it for you. If the kitchen does not have such a certain amount of food, I hope to invite two more people because no one wants to wait an hour for a dish.
DO NOT be fooled by its nice appearance! This is the most particular salty Hunan-Chinese cusine Ive ever eaten. As a Hunanese I feel cheated. Another, I do not agree its an innovate cusine as well. A bowl of bean paste tofu and some quick-frozen shrimps are so salty, a pot The so-called Gongjiao with the fan is actually a Hainan yellow lantern. The spicy beef rice noodles is a little bit of marinated beef. The fresh fish fillet rice noodle sells 30 knives for half an hour. ! ? ! Who are you?
So beautiful and so delicious! Highly recommend! Very Authentic Chinese food. The interior decoration are so beautiful as well. Its so delicious, so moved to cry, Hunan cuisine, sweet, sour and spicy, all tastes are just right! A rare conscience restaurant, the interior decoration is also very tasteful! Conscience recommendation
The interior decoration is very similar to Shanhai. I always have the illusion that they are the same boss. This staple food is the main rice noodle that I like most. The rice noodle is the favorite. I want to try it. I can say it is me. The best-smelling mixed cucumber taste is very green. The main reason is that the seasoning is very good. It is recommended that the hot squid is spicy and refreshing.
Nice place with delicious food. The problem was that we booked a table for 20:30 and as we entered they said they were closing the kitchen ... we booked under pressure and a few minutes after the food arrived they already brought an account and pressed us to pay. Suggest taking a last order at least half an hour before closing a kitchen to avoid such situations.
Nice location, upscale decors, friendly host and servers. The place is very authenticaly Xiang.Although the fish head is not a fish head, it does not differ much from the best fish head in Changsha. It is enough to eat such a fish in the United States! The taste of the potato is also very authentic. It is the same as the domestic restaurant. It is delicious!
Called at 3pm on Saturday to book a two-seat seat at 6.30pm. As a result, when it arrived at 6:40 in the evening, the clerk said that it was full and said that he did not know about your reservation. It should be that the person who answered my call did not hand over with the clerk who worked at night. The clerk at the time was still very good, apologized to us, and when I heard that I was planning to go to another store nearby, he took the initiative to say that he knew a friend who worked there to help us ask if we needed a long line. This 1 star just wanted to complain about the staff who picked up my call in the afternoon and claimed to be a successful booking. It was too unreliable and made me go for nothing 😠
Today I went with my girlfriend and ordered hoof hummus, fried pork with poached eggs, salted egg yolk potato shreds and dry pot beef lotus root slices. This restaurant is really delicious. The spicy dishes are very spicy. It’s really spicy. You can’t eat spicy thousand. Do not add spicy, but the taste of the dishes is very good.

2022-07-21Michelin guide restaurant is definitely feels more upscale when you walk in, the design is very nice and modern, the service was great, we came right before they closed the kitchen for lunch at 2pm on a Saturday but the food actually came out really fast.If you can eat spicy I recommend just go for the spicy option, I picked the medium was not spicy enough for me for all the dishes. The duck tongue is a little lack of flavor taste like newly cooked didnt soak in the sauce long enough to take the flavor. The liver is fresh and good portion. Most of the dish are a bit pricy, we had 3 dish one app one noodle cost $160 that’s very expensive for this cuisine.

2021-12-16I’ve been here twice so far. It’s more cost efficient for party of 4. Def recommended the 荷包蛋小炒肉! Rice noodle was under my expectations. Beer duck was overpriced but worth trying. One suggestion tho, please serve with commute spoons especially during COVID.Will revisit this place again.

2022-04-29Overall pretty good. As a hunaner, wouldn’t say 100% authentic. But would recommend to others to try!

2022-02-10Such a hidden gem - incredible, authentic food, a quiet, comfortable location, and the most attentive staff. Will definitely be returning!

2021-11-21The servings are pathetically small, all the stuff we want were “sold out”, so we have to order some second choices. When we got there, there were only 3 tables besides us, but it still took them 4 times, 4 times to put in our order!!! The duck dish is such a huge disappointment, there is only few pieces that are edibles, the rest are all fat and bones, it look nothing like what they advertised. Compare what they serve us (the tofu dish in the pic)vs what they are advertising, you’ll see. If you see a line outside it’s not because how good it is, it’s only because they serve the dishes too slow, so slow that we have to wait 20 minutes for the next dish when we finish the previous.

2021-05-16Freshly made Hunan style food. Taste was good but not so surprised or amazed. You can request the chef to change the level of spicy.

2022-06-12Don’t have much choice on the menu. Most of the dishes taste okay but not outstanding. 4 stars is fair enough

2022-06-09Very tasty! The rice noodle is generally good! Also had frog as well as cow stomach - yummmThe reason I didn’t give 5 is that only when 30 min after we put our order and still didn’t receive anything did we realize that the waitress didn’t manage to put order in….

2021-04-11Really really tasty... not as spicy as the first time i went maybe theyre going easy on us. But the flavors are really strong and authentic and each dish is very unique. Not take out American Chinese. This is Chinese chinese food. Favorite is the spicy frog leg if its available.
