After reading many good reviews, we decided to try the place, only to experience disappointment... Ice tea without flavor, deep fried perch dinner with more breading than fish, french fries tasting like...fish, breakfast burrito stuffed with poor quality sausage and lots of potatoes, (onions, peppers and cheese were hard to find...) On a good note, the staff was friendly..
Had chocolate chip and blueberry pancakes, and neither flavor stood out enough. Not bad, not delicious.Home fries were good and crispy, hash looked and tasted like canned hash.Chicken and Waffle sandwich was pretty good. Same sausage gravy you would expect at a diner. Waffle was fluffy, got pretty soggy towards the end because of all the gravy. We dont care much about service quality, but they never came to check on us. Took 10 minutes after finished eating to receive the bill.
The food was great, staff was friendly, we even went back for pie 🥧 and 🍰. The muffins we brought home were the biggest Ive ever seen and they are delicious! Carrot cake was also a must have= AMAZING! It was a great trip and we are so glad we stumbled upon this little gem! We went for our vaccines and cant wait to go back in 3 wks just so we can stop here again!
The waitress we had was great. We were the first one to be seated and have our orders taken then a couple came in the 3 guys then 2 young ladies. Well they all got their meals and we got ours last. The French toast was cold. Cook did not serve his meals the way they came in which ia wrong.
Hungry bear restaurant is actually one of the better restaurants in town.1. When you go in to the restaurant You are usually greeted with pleasantries and hospitality.2. Their food, comparatively, is usually excellent, and completed just as you ask.The food is tasty, seasoned well, and brought to you in a timely fashion.3. The spacing in the restaurant (for Covid requirements) is done according to standards, helping one to feel safe as they eat.All in all they are excellent when looking for a down-home breakfast, lunch, or dinner experience.
We stopped here on the way through and we were all thoroughly impressed! We had everything from breakfast meals to dinner meals and it was all cooked so well. The service was fast and pleasant. The restaurant as a whole was extremely clean. The prices are also very good. I would very highly recommend this restaurant!
Very rustic setting. Love the interior of the place. The food is always on point. They open pretty early as well which is great with breakfast establishments. All around great, whether your having a family, business, or even a little romance this place is simple enough to be able to do all three
This rustic off the beaten path place is a locals paradise, much better than the chain restaurants. You get a lot of food for the money and it is excellent too. The wait staff was on the ball and very good. I totally recommend this restaurant for when your around the Plattsburgh area.
Love this restaurant. Im usually here once a week. Great food and the portion sizes are very generous. Great value. The staff is very friendly as well. The Adirondack burger is my personal favorite. :) And you gotta try the home made pies. Theyre delicious! Just do it. Raspberry Cream is my favorite pie.
Instead of doing our usual shopping lunch break at one of the local chain store restaurants, we decided to take a chance and try this little gem. It isnt easy to please my picky crew but this place was a huge hit. My son said its his new favorite place ever. My daughter is already begging to go back. The food is delicious , the prices very reasonable and the service was incredibly quick. The place was packed but the waitresses handled it with ease. Definitely worth the trip!
This was the first time my girlfriend and I had been to this restaurant. As we sat down it was very loud the staff was very rude my girlfriend and I waited a long time to sit then a long time for our food as the food came out the hot hamburg was like it was thrown on the plate the fries was so greasy she couldn’t eat them my mozzarella sticks were not cooked all the way and my fries were greasy and my Philly cheese steak was on a hot dog bun I HIGHLY RECOMMEND that you don’t go to this restaurant AT ALL
Stopped in while on a road trip, and it was fantastic!! The server was so kind, very nice. The food came in a timely fashion, and everything was so darn good. That was the best chicken fried steak Ive had in my entire life!! The food was amazing, the staff was attentive. All around, a fantastic experience. I love local diners that serve regulars but treat strangers like family, and this was the place!! We will definitely stop in every time we drive through Plattsburgh, NY.
Nice staff, good food. Very accommodating for my messy and hangry 1.5 year old. We went during lunch on a slower day. Biscuits and gravy is bomb and pancakes are huge! I also really love their bear bowl! Fries not so great when we got fish and chips. They were brownish... other than that, very yummy!
Brisk business on a Sunday late morning. College students and lots of different regulars greeting each other and the staff. Attentive staff, well cooked food, food selection, nice size portions. Decent parking even when crowded. Sit at the counter if alone for fastest service.
We wanted a diner after missing breakfast & lunch. This place was a classic small-town comfort food place with maybe a dozen tables. From the outside, it wasnt much to look at. The menu offered breakfast anytime, so we both got eggs, home fries, toast & meat (I got sausage patties, my wife got bacon.) What came out were plates mounded with the best brown crunchy potatoes & onions, along with our eggs, meats and toast. The potatoes were killer-good - crunchy, lightly spiced and mixed with those sweet, caramalized onions. Three cups of good coffee later and I was filled to the brim. The server was great, handling all of the tables in the room (with a bit of kitchen plate service help.) Highly recommended!
A great restaurant especially if youre looking for breakfast any time of the day! Ate eggs, bacon, potatoes, french toast, hash and oatmeal. Everything was as you would want it. Ive had much better hash and french toast, eggs are eggs, bacon is ok, oatmeal was good potatoes were above average. Menu selection was very complete and portions were medium to large. Overall a slightly above average local breakfast place that I would visit again.
Their raspberry cream pie is to die for!!! Seriously if it is available, you should try it. They have big portions for pretty reasonable prices; their signature hungry bear dish can last me for two to three meals. They have a classic rustic diner feel. Their staff is always so pleasant too.
Best home made food, great service, great prices! I had the turkey dinner and it was just like youd expect at Thanksgiving dinner. A mountain of turkey, masked potatoes and gravey with stuffing, corn and a roll. You better be hungry! A whiteboard full of home made pies, I went for the coconut cream and it was delicious (and huge!)!
Great, cozy restaurant. Service was fast and friendly. We had a bit of everything and it was all good. My daughter got breakfast (served all day) and I stole one of her sausage links...a real link, with natural casing cooked to perfection. I had a great burger and my other daughter had a cheesesteak with peppers and onions. The roll for the cheesesteak was perfect...one of the keys to a good sandwich! The French fries were really good and fresh as well. All in all, this was a great spot for a filling and tasty meal of comfort food, prompt service, and very good value.
If you are from out of town please do not go there because they will let their friends in 1st and leave you out in the parking lot for an hour. We made a reservation went out to the parking lot and waited and waited and new cars came in they went in 1st and young people say mages all the people that work there came right on in but not us. We waited almost an hour and after they let some more young people and they said they didnt have a table for 4 people still. What they didnt realize was 2 of the people there we came to visit our regulars there and theyd witnessed it and theyre not too happy about it either. Just remember people friends 1st And you come later . Needless to say we never made it inside so we had to go to another place to eat before I had a 5 hour drive thank you for nothing.
The restaurant was fairly busy when I arrived. I sat down and my waitress was at my table taking my order within a minute. I ordered one of the specials and the spaghetti was hot and delicious. I havent been here in a while but I will be coming back soon. Excellent service.
Very disappointed wirh the service. I understand we were there for Sunday brunch time but to be ignored for almost 10 minutes?? Not a hello or well be right wirh you Not even a nod and a smile to acknowledge we were even there... After more than 10 minutes of standing around we debated leaving but decided to hang in there as the saying goes if its this busy it must be good... NOT!!! Coffee served in a dirty cup. There was lipstick leftover from a past client still on the cup.. GROSS!! The quality of the food was beyond sad. The bacon (I mean raw rubbery fat) served was inedible, I asked for scrambled eggs, it was a chopped up omlet.. The potatoes were greasy and deep fried.. The toast was the best thing on the plate and even that was only toasted on one side.. Tried it. Now we know better. Will not be returning..
Terrible food. Not just bad, terrible. And what we ordered was pretty simple. Homefries that I ordered with onions, that came without onions and then appeared to have been deep fried in oil that wasnt hot enough. They were still white and tasted like oil. The eggs had no seasoning and were barely cooked. The ham was fine, just a little dry. The Michigan and poutine my SO got was not just bad but disgusting. The gravy was half solidified and burnt, the fries were over cooked with bits of fryer debris in them and instead of cheese curds, cheap yellow shredded cheese was used. Somehow the hot dog was over cooked and cold and the sauce was tasteless and barely there. And yet the place was packed, I dont understand why people would continue to pay for this level of terrible. At least the service was okay.
My friends and I stopped here randomly for a quick bite and it turned out to be the highlight of our one-day roadtrip from Canada. Excellent homemade food. You can tell that the sauce on the egg benny is made from scratch and I loved their take on it. And dont get me started on the pies!
As much as we were the only black persons here they were very friendly. The food was good and we didnt have to wait long for food. We felt right at home. Very cozy. Most importantly the food was Great and the kids alao loved it. I recommend this restaurant if your in the plattsburg area
Sorta had the perch fry Friday the 2/16. Burnt, bones, and scales. Horrible. Would never recommend to anyone. I am an avid fisherperson I know how to filet and cook perch. And what a disappointment. The French fries were severely under cooked. I threw it out. Ive have an upset stomach ever since. Hope its not food poisoning. MY ADVICE...STAY AWAY.
Service was poor and there was barely anyone in the place when we showed up. They messed up my order for drinks and when I got my food it was undercooked and it took me 15 mins just to tell the waitress. Usually they are pretty good about service and quality and this visit really upset me
Had lunch with my mother here, the service was decent, orders not so much...burger I ordered was sloppy, milkshake was so thick it literally was just ice cream mixed with strawberry topping, my mothers meal was a cabbage meal that was undercooked ...wont eat here again
Wish I could give zero stars walked in sat down waited 10 minutes no body came to our table the two people who walked in after us got menus and drinks it must be if your not a regular you dont get good service doesnt hurt my feeling we just wont go to the hungry bear anymore

2022-03-01The sandwich was good, the waitress was super-friendly, and the service was speedy. The shoestring fries are just okay, and the dining area is small, but it was still okay. People were in and out pretty quickly, so you should have no problem finding a seat. I would go again.

2022-07-04The food was delicious and I definitely got my moneys worth. Plus the staff were professional & courteous. I had only a short wait to get my food and enjoyed chatting with a few fellow customers. Ill be going back there again soon !

2022-03-08Well not sure what happened to the service here... guess if mom and I were men, service would have been better as we witnessed the time we were there. Food was OK. Had plain bagel egg sandwich that tasted like onions. Moms scrambled eggs looked and tasted over cooked. Asked for grape jelly from Nicole and was given a very rude yup. Just not good food or service. Especially service.

2022-04-16We walked into the Hungry Bear made eye contact with the waitress, she told us where to sit. Not even five minutes later she waited on three other tables that sat down after us. Not happy with the service and will not be going back there.

2022-05-30Good food and even better service. Was super busy and some people have the wait staff a hard time. They were working their tails off and doing a great job

2020-02-18A breakfast and lunch spot made popular by the locals. Its reasonably priced and have great portions for a hearty meal. I would try it again for different dishes or simply to have a warm breakfast. The steak seems to lack proper marinade, seasoning and was quite tough. Choose rare if you want medium. Eggs and home fries are cooked well. Definitely a worth a visit if you are looking for a quaint local place to eat without all the fuss.

2021-10-27Two of us had the biscuits and sausage gravy. Biscuits were quite large with plenty of gravy on top. Gravy wasnt the best Ive had (needed more seasoning), but did the trick. Had it with eggs also. My over easy were cooked correctly. The other person had oatmeal and a fruit cup.All in all it was a good breakfast for a reasonable price. Service was good.
