Fanally made it to this classic location. The restaurant is beautiful, it has the vibe of a mixers early 2000s. The food is very solid, we tried many different dumplings, they were so fantastic, specially the soup ones and the crispy pork. Then we move to the duck and we followed with some main courses. The duck was absolutely gorgeous. The restaurant was understaffed but that’s happening all around the city, no ones fault and everyone was very nice.
Its not everyday you can put a restaurant on your top lists, but Hutong fits that bill for top Chinese fine-dining in NYC.Lets talk duck for a second, because the best Peking duck went to Dadong, and with its unceremonious closure back in Jan20, that honor now falls onto Hutong, which has THE BEST Peking duck, and skin-thin wrap plus fixins I have ever had the pleasure of having. AND thats not even the main course! (Its its own second course!)Lots of sharable bites to count throughout the menu but all executed well and worth revisiting every single time! Ridiculously good is an understatement.Mille-feuille wagyu, Genius! Dan dan noodles, bomb! Fried rice? Heavenly. Lets not forget the mushroom baos, that are decorated to look like mushroom. Mind blown. Anything with Sichuan peppercorn? Give me moar!Lest I mention the cocktails. Crafted by expert mixologists, the cocktail menu alone starts from the top as refreshing, all the way to the bottom, as spirit-forward. Perfect for any mood youre in, or in my case, a cocktail flight to go with the progression of the meal. Its definitely a place to impress someone, and can accommodate groups of any size, including private banquet rooms upstairs. As Arnold puts it, ILL BE BACK. 10/10
This was my first time dining at Hutong, NYC. I’ve dined at Hutong, London, and I had very high expectations. The staff were very warm, friendly and accommodating. My party of 5 was running late by almost 30 minutes because of traffic, but we were still accommodated. The ambience was nice; but not stellar considering the price point. The music was quiet enough to enjoy conversation. It was elegant, but not romantic and warm.Next the food. The food was excellent, but not on par with Hutong, London. For appetizers we ordered the cold asparagus and mushroom bao. The mushroom bao was very good.Next, we had the Red Lantern and vegetable fried rice which was delicious. The red lantern is not to be missed. I wish there were more pieces of crab though. Then we had the Ma La chili prawns, eggplant tempura with white rice. If the portions were larger, it would have been nice.We finally finished off with the Halibut red star noodles which was a winner!!!! The presentation, the flavorful broth, the fish; everything was on point. Sadly we were so full we couldn’t finish it!For dessert we had the white sesame seed mousse and Ma La Chocolate. We were pleasantly surprised by how flavorful and delicious the desserts were. I would highly recommend the white sesame seed mousse! The service started off really well, but we found ourselves waiting for long durations of time between courses. The service slipped a little, and they even forgot to bring my tea at the end.All in all, it was a great evening, great food and very good service. There is room for improvement. Highly recommend
What a jazzy Art-Deco inspired restaurant! Absolutely loved the decor and the food was yummy as well! Be aware that you will need to show proof of vaccination upon entering and masks must be worn. Also, there are no forks on the table, only chopsticks. While I liked the authenticity of it, it’s something to note if you’re not skilled at using them. If you’re into drinks with a sort of ginger taste then I suggest the Comfortably Numb. It actually numbs your mouth which I found so cool! We started with the Hutong Prawn Roll which I thought was a tad greasy, but tasty…and I ordered the Ma La Chilli Prawns as my entrée which was also tasty but a tad greasy. If you order these just be mindful that they are SPICY!! Overall, I enjoyed it but took off a star for the oiliness of the food. The staff was super friendly and helpful! Oh! And I LOVED the Vegetarian Fried Rice!
The experience was horrible and it was acceptable. This is supposed to be a high end restaurant but the service was absolutely awful, McDonald has better service. First off, it was unclear to me about the location of the entrance when I arrived at the address at 731 Lexington Avenue, so I called the restaurant. The “hostess” picked up the phone, and I asked her for direction, I was a bit unclear about her direction, so I had to ask a few times to verify and she got frustrated at me and hung up. I mandated to walk around the block onto east 59th street, the whole building side walk was blocked by yellow barricade tape, so I walked to east 58th street, same and the whole building was blocked by yellow barricade tape, I walked up and down the street and hoping to see some sign that tells where I can go to enter, until a security guard walked up and to me and asked what I was looking for? I said I was trying to find the entrance to Hutong, he told me I just have to CLIMB OVER THE YELLOW BARRICADE TAPE! It was fine for me to do that, but how would anyone to do so! Normally, you don’t want to do that, when there’s yellow barricade tape, you’re not supposed to cross that! Sometimes, you’re breaking the law doing so! And I was surprised the hostess on the phone call didn’t mention about the yellow barricade tape. After I sat down and looked at the regular menu, I asked the waitress if there’s a set menu, we have only two people but wanted to try several things and thought maybe a set menu. We thought we saw that on the website. But she didn’t know, she was running around looking for a menu, and then I told her never mind, we could just order from the regular menu. Normally, a restaurant at this scale, the waiter would know better and they would give recommendations and explanation to the menu, but not so much from her unfortunately. And after we placed our order, she went onto a lengthy conversation with the table across from us, she was talking to them for over 30 minutes, I was wondering how she had the time and how she just abandoned her other guests, she literally came by only when we were at the end of our meal! Thankfully we didn’t need anything from her during the meal as we couldn’t ask since she was talking non-stop at the other table! Making it worse, the waitress kept pulling her mask down while she was walking around the restaurant, and while she was talking to the guests at the other table, and a couple times when she came over to talk to us, she SHOULD not pull her mask down!
You need Covid vaccination to get into the restaurant. The service is good but lacks smile and warmth. The food in general is of very good quality. We liked the Peking duck a lot, but they forgot the second part of our duck, when they finally brought up the dish after we reminded them at the end of the meal, it didn’t even have any duck meat inside. Sorry, we are Chinese and we know our Peking duck serving sizes and can’t be fooled easily. The arrogant unfriendly lady manager refused to apologize or offer any compensation and told us to take it off the tip from the server. Unbelievable! She should be fired for such service attitude. The beef appetizer was not good, tastes no beef only breading. Spicy chicken appetizer was good.
Everything we ordered was executed wonderfully. Shredded beef appetizer was delicious & the sweet sticky glaze & crunchy breading made it tastes like candied beef. All the dim sums we ordered were not only beautiful but delicious. Crunchy broad bean dish was addicting. We got Peking duck and the chicken with 3 types of fried chili peppers and they were phenomenal. The crispy delicate chili made a nice snack after we finished the chicken part. LolI just wish the portion size for the two main dishes were bigger but they were so tasty I dont want to deduct a star. The desserts were so cute! I liked the shao long bao shaped one a lot.
We came here for the first time on 10/4/21 because our favorite east midtown Chinese restaurant was not open for dine in customers. We had the crispy pork dumplings and waygu beef dim sim. Both were excellent. 2 of us then shared a half Peking duck which was succulent and plentiful. The crepes served with it were so thin they melted in your mouth. We were getting full and wanted to try at least one more dish so we took the second course of the duck home and shared the Dan Dan Noodles. I would reccomend this restaurant even though it is on the expensive side thought the duck was a good value considering the portion size.
I fully support the effort that Chinese restaurants could target all spectrum of the market, from cheap to high end. Hutong seems to attempt targeting the higher end. However, the over-pricing is ridiculous. We ordered a delivery and a $50 dish of cod fillets look like this. 5 small pieces. The taste is not too bad but the price isn’t justified.
I absolutely love this place. It’s quiet and dim; perfect for a romantic date. It’s also a good place to sit down and have a nice meal alone as well. I’ve had both and both experiences were equally as satisfying. The drinks are delicious! I HIGHLY RECOMMEND the “Comfortably Numb” cocktail. You’re definitely in for a tingly surprise. The red lantern dinner combos are a great value as well if you’re looking for a bang for your buck solo meal or just get a spread of appetizers and an entree to share if you’re with a significant other or friend. Hutong is a new favorite of mine.
Hutong… a beautiful experience. About time there was a high end Chinese restaurant in the city. The place is enormous with soaring ceilings and a massive room. The tables are quite spaced out so you don’t feelcompromised. The bar is a separate very pretty room and massive. Perfect for hanging out or giving a private party. The food is beautifully presented and delicate in taste. And the service is very attentive and efficient. I have returned 4 times to this must go to restaurant. Don’t miss it!
Overall awful experience. Food and service is overpriced and overrated for sure.we reserved a table but were allocated to the bar area. The server at our table was hard to be reached. We had a good amount of time waiting for the server to come and order for us. We also waited for a while to order dessert. The bar area was very crowded and noisy - definitely not something I was expecting when I made the reservation.Food was okay but extremely little. we ordered a Red Lantern that costs $57 but it came with only 5 little crab. unbelievably little. For anyone whos interested in their Roasted duck, they didnt even separate the duck skin and duck meat, which is the most usual way of cooking Peking roasted duck. They didnt do well on separating duck fat either, making it very oily. The only good thing about our dinner was that the table cleaner/server whos responsible for cleaning our table and changing new plates was very responsive and always came in timely. I wish all our tips went to his pocket as his service was the only highlight last night given the overrated food and other service we have experienced.
This is a great dining experience in New York City. Really nice restaurant, with very competent, unobtrusive dining room staff. Nice wine list, albeit a bit pricey. Enjoyed a couple of different dumplings and an excellent Peking Duck. Not my first time at Hutong, and it will certainly not be my last.
1. the toilet cant wash2. the waiter who served us didnt wear the mask correctly, and he ignored my gentle reminder until I reported it to his supervisor3. the food is just above average but nothing surprised us, some dishes (red lantern, wagyu) are really mediocre and a waste of such quality material
Ambiance is great. Floor manager graciously sat us at a booth. Waitress was solid. Food: duck is served in two courses. The second course leaves you asking where is the rest of our duck. It came 45 minutes after all other courses were complete and it was 80% chopped green beans and morsels of ground dark meat. Allegedly the alternative flaming duck leaves you with more meat. Lobster: do NOT recommend the lobster. It is not even close to worth what is charged. Flavorings are colorful, delicious and its served with a whole lobster shell inferring youll be getting the whole lobster for $80, you are served about the weight of half of a tail and no visible claw meat. The response to an incorrect martini order was disappointing. A manager responded, after the bar incorrectly made it a 2nd time, by insisting that the fruit peel was lemon not orange and he saw the bartender make it himself. The entire table smelled the peel, it was deep orange in color and smelled like an orange. Our fellow guest walked the incorrect drink to the bar himself where the bartender kindly noted it was an orange peel and corrected the drink. Very wierd experience with the manager.
Very disappointing. It’s my birthday and I called in advance, but apparently they prepared nothing for me and no one told me in advance that I need to pay 40 bucks to cut my birthday cake in the restaurant. Instead when I called they told me there will be candles. The attitude of our waiter is really bad when he told me I cannot cut my cake. Indeed ruined my celebration entirely. Also, the price doesn’t meet food quality, how can you charge $42 for six small shrimp balls? Both food and service are disappointing.I would never recommend here to celebrate birthday, and won’t come back again.
Beautiful restaurant with amazing foods. This is my favorite place to eat pecking duck. We get calamari flowers and Wagyu beef millefeuille dumplings for starters. Then the whole pecking duck to share. Absolutely delicious! Red lantern and the chef’s vegetable fried rice are also very nice. Highly recommended
Love the service, food and ambiance. We were seated at the bar/lounge area and we were greeted by the most welcoming staff. From the hostess at the front door to the managers. The bartenders Henry and Mat made the best-tasting/most Instagramable cocktails in NYC. Leticia who was the server for our table was very professional and knowledgeable. Abel & Rahel were also very attentive to our table and very patient with us. The managers Sunnel, Vincent, Joshua & Raff all came to our table to make sure we were having a great experience. The food was amazing from the lobster crystal dumpling to the delicious Bao & soy milk ice cream. Theres not a of places who offer this level of great service. Thank you again to everyone, we will definitely come back.
If you like over-paying for ambiance, waiting 30 minutes per dish, and end up feeling underwhelmed despite being so hungry that anything should’ve tasted good then this is your place. If you are coming with a small group - do yourself a favor and go to a real restaurant that serves good Peking duck and dim sum. There’s plenty out there at 1/2 the price. If you are organizing a big event - go anywhere but here. You’ll be dealing with unprofessional people with no understanding of their menu and end up paying $220 for 6 dishes that took 3 hours to prepare and have Trader Joe’s ice cream for desert.Oh and never check your coat if you absolutely have to come here… they don’t know what they are doing.Never again…
For a $160 prepaid reservation for the Flaming Duck, my date and I would have thought this to be a more special experience and dish, but we received the absolute opposite at Hutong. This has to be the worst experience I have ever had a restaurant. From the moment we stepped into Hutong and let the host know of our reservation, “the Flaming Duck reservation for two at 7PM,” he seemed confused and said he needed to speak to the manager. He proceeded to ask us to sit in the bar area until he was able to speak to the manager. The restaurant itself was not quite so busy, and tables were empty, ready for seating (and continued to stay empty even after we were sat). After “checking with the manager” the host came back and said he was able to find our reservation and the table was now ready for us. I’m confused why I even pre-paid for a reservation for this lack of communication. Anyways, after being sat, our waiter came over and again, we mentioned our flaming duck, as we weren’t sure yet what to order along with the dish or if we needed to, and asked for the waiter’s recommendation. I’m offended at the waiter’s response of, “let me confirm if you really have this reservation or not.” So again, I prepaid for a reservation only for it to be questioned twice now. When the waiter came back with, “yes, you did book the flaming duck,” we asked how the portion was sized, in which he replied that it was “like an appetizer.” He was completely clueless. Everyone in the establishment was clueless. Thankfully we didn’t order more food, as it was a whole duck. Further, after the duck had been carved, since the description of our dish from both the menu or the waiter didn’t include a second serving of the leftover duck meat (like the regular Peking duck on the menu), we asked to keep the duck table side to finish. The duck was then taken away and packaged into a to-go bag instead. Why would I want the rest of my food to-go when I’m presently eating??? Hutong has got to be the worst service I have ever received. Terrible service, subpar Peking duck, not even carved and served traditionally. Zero stars if I could.
Atmosphere is great for hanging out for drink but the food wasnt that great. I expected higher quality than this but wasnt too satisfied. By the way the Koushui chicken was horrible it was like plain steamed chicken dump into tasteless sauce. The hutong DanDan noodle was pretty good but unfortunately portion was very small. The pecking duck was soso. U can tell by the skin of duck that it was over burnt in certain area of the skins. Not recommending for food but for drinks its ok
I am leaving a review after my second visit. Ambiance is contemporary, corporate and airy. Thought the bar was actually quite beautifully designed.Food is refined and served beautifully but it’s timid on the spices. Wished it was a bit more flavorful. Everything was pretty good but what stuck out was bad Peking duck. It was served cold w thick layer of congealed solid fat under the skin. (not even pictured). From half a duck, only 8-10 slices of meat. Whoever said it’s the best duck in the city?!Service is very attentive both times. I would go back - just no duck.
Very mixed experience. Waited at the bar for 40mins for our table. The Wugyu beef and lobster dumplings were really good but the delivery of the food was awful. Someone would literally just appear, plonk the plate on the table saying this is the beef and just walk off. No one asked us if everything was ok, if we needed anything. They dropped our rice on the table and we waited 15mins for our mains to arrive to go with it. No server to be seen anywhere. The Sanchen spiced chicken arrives and it was a bowl of dried chilis. When I say that I mean it literally. We found, after much searching in the giant bowl, 4 miniscule pieces of chicken. I just cannot believe any chef would serve that to someone. When we complained no one brought us a replacement dish and eventually after further enquiry they took it off the bill. We left still hungry and very disappointed from this experience.
The only reason I’m giving this restaurant 4 stars is because of the manager Joshua!!!!!!!! He made the experience what it was. Joshua is extremely professional, well spoken and accommodating. He seen us and just came to the table and introduced hisself and gave us food recommendations. Our server was really nice too, I didn’t get her name. The look of the restaurant is very elegant and well kept. But if you want the flaming duck YOU HAVE TO PREPAY AND LET THEM KNOW WHEN YOUR MAKING A RESERVATION. This was our first time ever going to the restaurant so we had no knowledge of that. We ordered the duck and when it came out it was already sliced. We wanted the whole experience of them bringing it out & setting it on fire ectThe first manager came to us a older gentleman with grey hair. He basically said it’s nothing he could do, you have to book it ahead. He stated it tells you on the restaurant website. What made us even come to the restaurant was because we saw the duck on fire.We were going to cancel the rest of our food and leave but apparently they had a extra duck & Joshua was able to arrange it for us. The red lantern, crispy pork dumplings, crispy pawn rolls, and wagyu beef is good. The wagyu beef reminds me of a beef patty lolIt’s unique restaurant and Joshua is amazing!!!
Don’t do it. The worst dining experience of my life. Everyone here was clueless. We had a prepaid “flaming duck” reservation but from the moment we walked in, from the host to the waiters, everyone acted as if they never heard of such a thing. The manager was too busy hitting on the female guests while the dining room around him descended into chaos. Not an isolated incident as both tables next to us kept getting wrong drink orders or being surprised by some dish they had not ordered. Stay away. Hutong? More like Pootong.
OMG! Absolutely amazing experience. They carved my duck right in front of my table and then served it in two different ways. I had soy ice cream for the first time and also order dumplings and crispy shrimp. The flavors were amazing and the service was #1! I will surely be coming back.
It’s definitely an upscale restaurant experience and pricing. The food was good, well made, good quality and well plated/presented but not extraordinary especially for the cost.I knew the restaurant would be pricey and I’m fine with pricey but the food needs to match that price and I did not think it was. We treated my parents for lunch so it was the four of us. The plates are meant for sharing and the portions are meant for 2 people to share in my opinion. I also thought it was odd that for the dim sum they served 3 pieces per dim sum. Awkward to share with 4 people and it didn’t make sense to order 2 of each dim sum. For the price they should have done 4 pieces for each dim sum. The shu mai had 4 pieces but everything else was 3.We did not order dessert because it was uninspiring. The mock tails were good - at least from what my parents said.I had a cocktail (Jing Xi) which I enjoyed and thought it was pretty good but not worth $20...My dad told me that he read in the Chinese newspaper that the restaurant is rumored to not stick around. That would not surprise me if that is true given our first hand experience.Despite the price, it was a pleasant experience. Staff was very warm and friendly as expected when dining at an upscale restaurant.
This modern sleek restaurant serves Chinese cuisine from dim-sums to pecking duck. Their fried soft shell crab, Red Lantern, was very tasty and soft. Dumplings are a bit pricy for such a small portion. Half pecking duck gave about 15 slices, which was good for two people, and they took the remaining duck back to the kitchen and made lettuce wraps using the duck leftover. Pecking duck was not bad, but there were lots of fats underneath the duck skin, and hope they give more cucumbers and scallions.
I am genuinely perplexed by all of the rave reviews. I found the food at Hutong to be mediocre and the entire experience mostly underwhelming. To begin with, Hutong has a policy of not seating guests until the entire party arrives (which I understand and am not opposed to). The problem here is the layout of the restaurant. The hostess asks guests to have a seat in the bar until everyone arrives, but most people just stand around waiting in the vestibule since the bar is down a short hallway in a separate room. It made a poor first impression of cramped chaos (and people deciding to wait outside rather than in the bar) in what was supposed to be a high end restaurant. Once inside the dining room, which is an elegant and well appointed space, we found the chairs to be incredibly heavy and uncomfortable, and like many NYC restaurants, the tables are close enough together that you can hear entire conversations going on next to you, even when you are trying not to. We also could never figure out who our waiter actually was since different people took our food, drink and dessert orders - but we were later ignored by some of the very same servers, making service sloppy and inconsistent. I ordered two cocktails, the Red Lantern and the Comfortably Numb, both were very good and I would order again. The food, however, was not as memorable and most of it I would not want to have again. We ordered the Wagyu Beef Millefeuille. This is one of the two dishes that I did like, despite the fact that it is not a mille feuille and it is described as being slow cooked with black pepper, but it is, in fact, incredibly sweet (similar to the Chinese BBQ pork flavor found in pork buns) without any pepper flavor. We then had the dim sum platter. This was mostly a miss with all four varieties that are included, but the biggest offender was the spinach dumpling. The spinach was bitter and mushy, tasting like it came straight out of a box of frozen vegetables right before being boiled to death. The others were neither awful nor delicious, they were just there. We were then served Ma La Chili Prawns - a fiery Sichuan dish made with peppercorns, garlic and ginger. The prawns were incredibly over-salted with zero detectable heat or flavor (despite being served on a bed of dried red chilies) and Dan Dan Noodles, which I did think were flavorful, despite the fact that there was also zero detectable heat in this traditionally spicy dish. At this point, we decided not to order any other savory dishes, although there were others we had initially thought we wanted to try. We ordered the Bao with Soy Milk for dessert (the peach tears had to be explained to us, and the description of chewy resin on top of refreshing ice was not at all appealing). I have mixed feelings about this dish. If you got to the middle of the bao (its really white chocolate filled with sesame and semi-sweet salted caramel made to look like a dumpling), where the caramel was, it wasnt bad, but the outer portions of this dessert had a very strong sesame taste (similar to halavah - which I also dislike) and the soy milk ice cream did nothing to add or detract from the dish - like the dim sum, it was just there.
Came here with a group of friends. We ordered a lot of dishes as the portions were really small.Got the Peking duck, which was ok. I won’t say it’s the best but not bad for sure. They stir-fried the remaining meat, in a Korean style, and I liked it.The appetizer with beef inside was nice, and the shell was baked crunchy and the beef was juicy and tender. The other dishes, like the Lao Gan Ma beef, the cod and the Dou Miao was okay. Each of us only got a tiny portion of each though. The dessert was no impressive, but the look was good.Good service with ok food, but over-priced.
High end dim sum with a twist. My favorites were the hot and sour soup dumplings and mochi pork dumplings (the black ones). The flavors are unique and don’t leave you feeling as heavy as with traditional dim sum. The dessert is also a must have - a sesame dessert shaped like a bun with a side of soy milk ice cream. I would definitely come back here for a special occasion.
Really reminiscent of a fancy hotel restaurant in Hong Kong. Definitely a posh, splurge situation for some of us. As you would expect with this type of establishment, great service and really good food. Its not some contemporary, fusion faux pas. Elevated Asian is accurate. The siumai is worth the try, and the mouthwatering chicken as well.Saw the Peking duck as a crowd pleaser. Definitely worth, they do the lettuce wraps with the remaining meat afterwards, which even Chinatown restaurants arent willing to do.Definitely worth a go, Sunday brunches have a more extensive dim sum menu, so probably better option if you wanna cover your bases in one visit. Hard to go for groups, only three pieces per order, and I definitely dont recommend sharing one piece of dimsum.Heavy shout out to their XO/hot chili oil, best in the city. Best on everything. Also, weird naming convention for the rose champagne dumpling, what even is that?
Wonderful food and very kind staff that have great suggestions to wine and otherwise - really reccomend. I reccomend ordering a lot of food because meal portions arent so big. Our reccomendations: the duck meal, dumpling platter, cod dumpling/bun (REALLY good). Make sure to reserve beforehand, because it can be crowded, but if you arrive early right when it opens you should be good.
It seems a bit overpriced and many dishes arent particularly unique but their roasted duck is one of the best in the city. Cut tableside, its both juicy and flavorful. They also serve it in two separate dishes - the standard Peking Duck style with pancakes, and a mixed plate with veggies and spices. Delicious! A must if your a duck fan
Very innovative and chinese dishes with good presentations. The decor and vibe is very western. Has a formal dining area and a bar area. Good place to dine for more special occasions. Too bad the service can’t keep up with the food, decor and price. We spent ~100 per person.
Hutong has become my favorite go-to restaurant in Manhattan. For lunch or dinner, whether entertaining clients or relaxing with friends, the cuisine, ambiance and design deliver effortlessly. The attention to detail starts with the friendly welcome from the maitre d (Raafet) and continues into the stunning deco-inspired vaulted interior. Statement chandeliers offer flattering light. Background music and noise-levels allow for business to be conducted with ease. The food is exquisite. My favorite is the poached branzino in chili broth, a delicious, light choice with a perfectly balanced flavor. The pink champagne shrimp dumplings prove irresistible time and again. Service is impeccable and the waiters well-informed about the fare.As a long-time resident of Manhattan, it is always appreciated when a breath of fresh air rolls into town.
Great atmosphere! Love the vibe! Had my birthday dinner in the private room. Food was delicious! Can’t wait to return with my husband on date night and try everything else not on a prefix menu.Highly recommend the wagyu beef puffs and the sea bass noodles, although the noodles and broth were pretty spicy for me I still really enjoyed it!
My girlfriend and I had a great experince. Jack, the food service manager, was extremely kind and helpful. He got a nicer seat than we originally had since it was our anniversary. The food was great and our server, Alexander, was friendly. The restaurant itself is also beautiful in a nice area.
Was served by Chris tonight and me and my party had a blast! I loved the Magic Lamp cocktail with a very nice herbal tea flavor. Every dish we had served was a treat. The only complaint was that we had to wait a moment for our table and service was non-existent while waiting at the bar. By the time we were asked if we’d like any drinks it had been about 15 minutes and our table was finally ready!
We went to this restaurant this evening and made a reservation for 2 guests. We saw an empty table inside the dining area and asked if we could sitting there. The waitress said that table is for more people party and told us we couldn’t sit there because we only 2 people. Guess what, after 3 minutes they brought a white couple to that table. So we can’t sit at a better table just because we are not white??? And to be honest, the Peking duck taste weird, not traditional flavor.
Amazing cocktails and drinks menu, superb fresh and expertly seasoned chinese classics. We head the seafood wontons, the dumplings platter, duck and cod. Dessert was delicious. Jack, the manager came to our table and checked on things and chatted with us a bit. We felt welcome and special. The atmosphere is modern and sexy. I want to come back for the Shangai nights... Truly recommended.
The front of house was very disorganised and took over 20 mins to get us seated and then we we’re told to wait while we watched them clean the table. The dimsum menu was lacking and half of it was sold out at a 7:30pm seating. The food came out cold and we never got one of our sides. When we asked we were told they bring out courses how they’re supposed to be eaten. 20 mins done with the whole meal and the side still hasn’t arrived. How do you eat a side of vegetarian fried rice if not as an accompaniment? Cocktails were passable but took ages to arrive. We were pretty done with the meal when it did make an appearance. I had higher expectations. The roast duck was a major let down wasn’t crispy and pretty chewy.
I have frequented Hutong the last couple years and while I love their food amidst a pretty space I must say that their service standard is poor. I recently brought a group of friends whom I spoke about the food highly only to find yet again their food did not disappoint however, the service did again. I had a reservation and they seemed to not be properly prepared with a table, we waited in the bar for over 20 minutes to even have our order taken and this is when ny boyfriend spoke with the MaitreD a few times.... Once seated finally at a community table our server appeared to be overwhelmed and did not provide proper attention nor asked if we desired additional drinks when all were empty. The fiends loved all our shared Chinese tapas but, for spending $1,000 and receiving service akin to an average dining establishment it was distressing. My friends even asked my boyfriend to contact the manager whom he has interacted with prior and he never even received a reply. I would say the food is great but, so not have a high expectation regarding service if you go.
I did not like that they did not tell us that we needed proof of a covid test or vaccine before we would be seated. It took us 20 minutes to get there only to find out we needed this proof. I had to let my sister go in without me while I stayed outside looking through my emails for my vaccine info.Once in, the bartender was lovely and made my drink to my specifications twice. I had the half duck, but do not believe it was half a duck-more like duck breasts, and I did not like that I only had the option to have it with pancakes. I must say that the duck was very tasty though as was the plum sauce for it. My sisters lobster dish was also really delicious. I would go here again.
While the food and decor at this place is great, the customer service is absolutely atrocious to the point where it’s laughable! First of all the hostess was the most cold, unwelcoming person I’ve ever encountered at a so called “5 star restaurant.” Secondly, the meal that I requested (according to their website) needed to be prepaid in order to even book the reservation, which was all fine until they brought the check to the table and I saw that not only did they charge twice for the same meal BUT the price on the check was drastically different from what was prepaid. We brought the issue to the waiters attention (whom we had to interrupt another server to instruct him to come back to our table after he ignored us for about 20min while pretending to be “busy” running to other tables) and instead of explaining the huge difference in price and correcting it he had the biggest, nastiest attitude, laughed and pretended it wasn’t a real issue and that this habit of switching menu prices is something that happens all the time and he even stated that “it’s not fraud and they can charge any price they want.” At this point we requested the manager, explained the situation and he seemed to be just as clueless. The manager didn’t even understand that their restaurant requires the meal to be prepaid in order to book, he was also unaware of the booking agent that handles their restaurant reservations and he could not explain why the prepaid meal was way more than the amount presented on the check.I personally think everyone involved in this situation should be fired. This restaurant needs to close for a few days and the staff needs to take a field trip to an actual 5 star restaurant (i.e. Peak in Hudson Yards) and observe their team and the way they run their business and treat customers.
TLDR; excellent dishes. Smaller portion sizes, very tasteful overall, lots of Mala / spicy options.Appetizers: Nearly all the appetizers were excellent. The standouts were crispy pork dumpling, calamari flowers, vegan mushroom bao and wasabi okras.Entrees: The full roasted Peking duck was well presented and was good (not great). The Mala beef tenderloin and crispy prawns were great. The Mapo tofu was great as a vegetarian option.Overall, will certainly come back to explore some of the other dishes.
Lovely dining atmosphere - super swish. Very yummy but a bit pricey. We had scallop and prawn garlic wontons (good but wouldn’t order again), hot and sour pork xiao long bao (soup dumplings - so delicious), ma la beef tenderloin (beef quality wasn’t so great - wouldn’t get it again), red lantern (very instagram-able and tasty, but not amazing) and Hutong Dan Dan noodles (THE BEST)! I only remembered to take a photo of the hot & sour pork xiao bao...
It pains me to leave a one star review for this restaurant because I truly love the food and believe that it is the best Chinese food in the city right now. But service is very much part of the experience, and every time I come here since it opened, I cant help but feel bad for the kitchen staff. They are cooking excellent Chinese food, but it is served by an awkward waitstaff who apparently has not received formal instructions on how to serve Chinese food to a table, and that results in food arriving too early, or too late, or all at once, or worse, in the wrong order. It feels to me that whoever owns this place simply outsourced front of the house to an American catering company. And the sommelier who sports a man bun and struts around with a cocky attitude, does not pour the wine when full bottles are ordered. When it comes to music - despite China having over 2000 years of material, management opted for Eminems Without Me!On its website, the dining room is described as an elegant Art Deco room inspired by swinging 1920’s New York and Shanghai, which makes one question managements understanding of Hutong because it has nothing to do with either Art Deco or Shanghai. And finally, the Beijing duck. Not comparing this to Da Dong because it wouldnt be fair, but there shouldnt be so much fat left under the skin. This point can be controversial, but for a restaurant named Hutong and claims to be serving northern cuisine, one does not expect the duck to be cooked in a southern style. Also, why so stingy on the accompaniments to the duck?
The flaming duck experience was well worth the price point, would be enough for four or five ppl with a fish or two of appetizers or another order like dimsum.Apparently it is different from the typical Peking roast duck, in that it was marinated in various spices but also Green Apple juice, to add to the acidity and a bit of sweet for a twist to the traditional recipe.Oh the buns are wraps so its less carbs than the BAO buns, and we loved that.Especially the interesting and delicious wasabi mustard sauce, it was also served with hoisin sauce, shredded papaya, cucumber, and scallions!Interesting drink choices like Arcane Ancient Old Fashioned, Im your Venus, and Comfortably Numb which came with a hot pepper and dusted with Sichuan spices😮🥵. It definitely had a kick to it!Really excited to come back and try their Iberico dumplings!
Food was great. The cod boa, wagyu beef millefeuille, the red lantern and boa and soy milk dessert were the best. However it took too long for the food to come out at times. We got 3 dim sum orders in a timely manner and then about 30 minutes went by before the final 3 dim sum orders came. And then about 20 minutes for the entrees.
The food and service are impeccable. I dined here with my daughter on a recent holiday and was quite impressed with virtually everything. Im not the easiest person to feed due to food allergies, but my requests were honored and I enjoyed a delicious meal, as did my daughter. And the decor is gorgeous. Well done! I only hope they survive the current dining restrictions.
I don’t know how this place got four stars but as a Chinese restaurant it is definitely overrated.Besides roast duck and desserts there is nothing I would recommend. The restaurant looks nice, upscale but the dishes are not worth the price. If you look for decent Chinese food, not the ones that only have looks but not the taste (well the look isn’t that good either), go to somewhere like uluh. I would call this place as a bad adaptation of Chinese cuisine to America.
Awful experience overall. Seated 45mins later than our reserved time after the Maitre de intervened. The food was average. Do not order the spicy chicken- was full of red chillies (which typically is fine) but one had to literally fish for the chicken in the dish. Only bright spot was the wagyu beef dimsum. This was my first and last time at this restaurant.
Hands down one of my favorite meals in New York City. Upon entry, the interior design took my breath away, with such a high ceiling and elegant decor. The dining tables are hidden away to the left, with comfortable seating and honestly just a beautiful blue toned interior design. The food was absolutely beautiful. We ordered three appetizer dishes: wagyu millefeuille, pork bao, and calamari flowers. We also ordered the duck, noodles, crab, and a few others. The service was great and the food came up at a timely manner. The server was funny but also very detailed in his explanations. I absolutely loved this experience!
Visited early on a Sunday evening, before the crowds arrived. The space is lovely, if a bit cold and austere. Overall, while the food was good, the entire experience was somewhat underwhelming, especially given the premium pricing. We were seated in a banquette toward the front of the house and the space between tables several times caused a traffic jam between waitstaff and guests trying to find their way to their seats. Service was fine, though a bit detached. Appetizers were the spicy pork dumplings (visually striking, with interesting texture contrasts, but lacking in flavor) and prawn rolls (quite good). The Peking duck served two ways was an appropriate spectacle, but we found it not quite up to par with other places about town. The flavor leaned more to the subtle than bold, and the skin was not as crisp as wed prefer. The seafood fried rice was forgettable. The wine list is nice, if pricey, and there is currently no corkage option for you to bring your own bottle. We skipped desserts as nothing really jumped out at us.
I rarely post review, but this one got on my nerve.I called to ask if I could get a delivery through doordash earlier than their opening time. Basically wanted to know if there could be a way to get a take out order sooner, because their delivery opens at 4pm. The person answered the phone got feed up, she said I could place a advanced order, but insisted that I can only pickup at 5pm. Then what is the point of starting delivery one hr before opening? She basically shouted at me towards the end of the phone call. How could this restaurant got so arrogant? Have they forget how customers supported every business during pandemic. looks like the scar is forgotten to hurt .
We were greeted with pretentious BS about showing a vaccination card. Since I dont carry one around with me, we were relegated to their equivalent of a leper colony. The food is so-so and the wine selection is mediocre and ridiculously overpriced. The decor, with lacquered iron bars, looks like an upmarket jail, and gives the uneasy feeling that the chandeliers might be bugged.
DO NOT Order from them, you may not get Any pancakes/tortillas with your duck!!!!!We did a pick-up order at for a whole duck with specific instructions ‘extra pancakes please’. When we got home, there’s NO pancake in the order AT ALL, NONE. My husband called the restaurant right away: a woman picked up the phone call, he told her the pancakes were missing, and she told him to hang on while she was transferring him. The transfer went to a voicemail. My husband called the restaurant again and it got transferred to a voicemail directly. Not even an apology and trying to make it right! I emailed right away about the whole situation, still no response. We are very, very disappointed and upset about this whole experience. It has been a crazy week and we expected this to be an easy and quick dinner. However it turned out to be a nightmare. How could you eat a Peking duck without the pancakes?!?We liked Hutong and went there a lot before , also recommended it to so many other friends. This experience tonight has completely change our opinion about Hutong.
Beautiful space, airy and comfortable. We received amazing service, the waiter was knowledgeable and engaging. Delicious and visually stunning dim sum and other dumplings, but I would pass on the Peking duck. Not at all what you would traditionally think a Peking duck would be. The duck skin wasnt crispy nor did it have that mahagony color one would expect. The fat was also not properly rendered so the dish just tasted very greasy and heavy. Management was very accommodating and tried to appease us, but it still failed to live up to what it was billed as. It was your typical roast duck, not a Peking duck. Will have to try their other offerings next time.
Really courteous staff and extremely upscale. The soft shell crab was a must. The mouth numbing fried chicken was insane. The dim sum platter was a pass. Nothing special. The Peking Duck was enormous- enough for a large party in itself.Really professional staff and a great experience!
Delicious! And so many tasty choices for our vegetarian friends! Eggplant, okra, pea shoots, crunchy puffed spicy broad beans (suggested by our bartender and a lovely bar snack!) were all devoured. Then the DUCK. The pancakes were wafer thin and the homemade plum sauce was divine. Then a second duck course came with our entrees for a fun treat. The table next to ours even took their carcass home. The dessert bao was so crazy good, we almost ordered a second one. Our server was calm and collected and really well versed on the menu. The decor is over the top - high ceilings and chandeliers for days - such glamour from the bar to the dining room, and the upstairs private rooms are pure luxury, I cant wait to throw a party here. Happy we brought our friends in for opening night, we cant wait to come back and try the rest of the menu. Dont be afraid to try the spicier dishes, some are a little zippy after a few bites, and you can amp it all up with the chili oil condiment they bring. A great meal!
3 star for the food: duck is pretty good, the rest are just okay, especially given the high price.0 star for the waiter: our waiter was pretty cold and arrogant. He looked cool but didn’t provide any high-end service. He didn’t even come in the middle of our dinner to ask how was it going. He didn’t express anything when we left. I had to wave my hand several times to get his attention. He just kept walking around and did nothing. I don’t think the service matches the $$$.I don’t recommend this restaurant at all. It is pricey and there are a lot of other good chinese restaurants in town.
Beautiful, blue themed space that makes you feel like you’re in a fancy restaurant in Las Vegas. Service is quick and attentive. Drinks come out very quickly and our waitress was very friendly. Portions are not that big, so if you’re looking for value this is probably not the right place for you. Much, much better value than Mr. Chow however. Mr. Chow is in big trouble, because the food was really great - similar to what you could find in Asia. A great date night spot, I will definitely be returning to try the duck.
Food is good, me and my friend both really enjoy. Service is not good. We felt really uncomfortable when our server said to us you should use your camera to take pictures of that table. All of family members are playing their phone. That is a Chinese family. I didnt feel any funny and I didnt know why he said this to us. (We are Chinese also) So I asked him that is not your business right ? To judge your customers. His attitude made me feel very double standard. Came to Hutong twice, the server always bring you to sit in front of door, I dont have any chance to see how this restaurant looks like, only the door I really familiar with. Told this door story to my friend, she said same situation as hers. The only time she didnt sit in front of the door because her colleague they went together to Hutong is a longtime customer, they know her so well. Two stars only give to food, for service if I can give under 0, I will.
We were excited to take our family here after having a great visit to the Hong Kong Hutong and expectations were high. However, we were very underwhelmed by our recent visit, mainly because the server was terrible. He was aloof, didn’t welcome us and offered absolutely no information about the food, or drink. There were four of us and every dim sum came in threes- how about mentioning that and offering an extra one? My husband requested sake. One assumes it comes in a small carafe but no it was $35 for the smallest pour in a wine glass you’ve ever seen. Most unusual. The food was tasty but portion sizes were too small eg with the chicken chili dish we actually had to try to find the chicken amongst so many chilies. I bet there wasn’t even one chicken breast in that dish. Duck was good. The cod was tasty but again tiny portion. What a shame it didn’t live up to our expectations mainly because they didn’t try. If we’d had a wonderful server it would have made all the difference. Won’t be back.
Last winter I had dinner here.Front desk ppl were not well educated. They lost my girlfriend’s scarf at the front desk. And when we asked the front desk to find it they said we didn’t actually bring the scarf when we came. We left our contact info there and after we got home, the restaurant called us saying they found the scarf. These front desk employees was not trained wellto know how to serve ppl and be professional. They doubted their customer and discriminated asians. We literally remember we bring the scarf in the cold winter but she was laughing at us saying I don’t think you had a scarf here.I sent this issue to their official email address, but it turned out to be no reply. This is how they deal with losing your personal belongings!
Was expecting a completely different experience. Upon arrival ( the day after NYC is announced to lift all Covid 19 restrictions) I am being asked for a Vaccine Card, meanwhile the bartender and some other staff would wear a mask just below their nose. Double standards. The food was ok. Good presentation. Tastes just ok! If you don’t have a vaccine card they have a different designated area for you to sit and you also would be required to wear a mask! Good luck!
Not impressed. The ingredients are fine, but the flavor is lack of creativity. It tastes as dull as an average American-Chinese restaurant: Neither creative nor authentic. Aside from the food, the experience of dining was also less than satisfing. When people reserve a table for special occasion, most of New York restaurants will offer some sort of special arrangement: better seating, complimentary drinks or desert etc. But nothing was done here. All in all, probably wont come back again. There are tons of similar restaurants in the city with better location and better service, why would I?
Felt a little under dressed when I went but they made me feel welcome with their warm greetings. This place is amazing, a great place to bring friends to eat and catch up. The food was delicious and picture worthy in the sense that the lighting was perfect. In fact, ambiance was perfect to take any and all types of pictures. The wait staff was amazing, everything was bought out in a timely manner and they even laughed at my friends comparison on one of their dish (said it looked like a demogorgon). One of the wait staff was nice enough to take our group picture, he even took multiple of them so we had plenty to chose from (all of them looked great, thank you :)).Will definitely come back again.
The food was exceptional and the service was impeccable. Eating at Hutong was truly a wonderful and special experience with the knowledge and attentiveness of the staff, the sophisticated and elegant décor, and most importantly, the food. I could not get enough of the crispy beef and the rack of lamb. The presentation was lovely and the flavors were all on point and delicious!
I am updating my review based on the 3 subsequent visits to the restaurant (2 pre-COVID and 1 post-COVID) and changing it to 4 stars (from 5) because of the service. The first time I went was right around when they first opened and while the service was just ok, at least servers were attentive/friendly. But the next 3 times I went I feel like the service got worse every time. It was hard to get the attention of servers and they just dont seem to care about your needs. The food is mostly still good but i think the deterioration in the service quality definitely changes ones dining experience, especially for a restaurant like this.-------------------------------------Literally the best Chinese food I’ve ever had in US. Everything from the ambience, to food, drinks, and staff are great. Very authentic taste and I actually like it better than the Hong Kong one. I look forward to Aqua’s new additions in NY/US.
Gorgeous restaurant with a wonderful menu. More like nouvelle Chinese - aside from the best in the city Peking duck, there are few dishes similar to run-of-the-mill Chinese. (This is not a place for won-ton soup).Service is great. And they have huge selection of wines.
Went with my colleagues today for our usual power lunch at the elegant Hutong. I was very impressed with the staff & Manager. The food, service & ambience were uber excellent, shared 3 appetizers, 3 pieces each dish, we chose the recommended Hutong dim sum dishes, the portions were just perfect! The Peking duck is a must, the added special dish from the duck was an unexpected delight; we will definitely return!
SUPERB addition to our neighborhood although this is no neighborhood Chinese restaurant. Weve been 5 times since it opened 3 weeks ago. Each time with a different couple and everything has been terrific. Weve settled into a pattern...........2 orders of Dim Sum, Peking Duck, Beef dish, fried crabs, rice. More than enough for 4 people and prices are fair. Service attentive. We are lucky that Hutong is only 2 blocks away from our building
Food was okay. Not too bad, edible, definitely not authentic. Peking duck too oily but couldnt really find anything better in manahatan.Service was terrible. Want to give negative 5 stars for that. Terrible server terrible waitor. They are rude and dont know they should appologize if they spilled food or gave me the wrong check (and charged us way more)! Do they even know the concept of appology?Food was taking forever to come out ( we waited 40-50minutes between food).
From the moment you walk in you feel welcomed, which I find rare for midtown fine dining options. Whether seated at the beautiful bar, in the main dining area, or in the private rooms upstairs, I am excited to be back and to bring clients here. The duck and the assorted dumpling dishes were both delicious and beautifully presented.
Probably one of the worst restaurants I’ve ever been to service wise. Our server was rude and not attentive. He forgot our drinks and the food took longer than acceptable to come out. We were a party of 4 people.Dim sum platter - beautiful presentation and decent flavors. Gave me hope for the dishes to follow but only disappointment was served.Hot and Sour pork Xiao Long Bao - was okay. I’ve had better.Peking Duck - the flavors did not live up to the presentation. A whole duck is brought out and sliced table side. It was a nice process to watch but the flavors were just not there. The meat was bland and the skin was oily.Branzino - was the least appetizing dish. The chili broth was more like a chili oil. I would have been less upset by it if the chili had some spice to it but it didn’t.Chef’s fried rice - didn’t come out until we had finished the duck and the branzino. Was cold as if maybe it was forgotten at the food rail when the fish was brought out.Kai-lan - this dish came out last. After we had already waited for over 45 mins for the other dishes and then finished eating them. The server’s excuse was, “They take longer to cook.” — Who are you kidding? Its Chinese broccoli. It’s the fastest dish to make. The next part is not the restaurant’s fault, however, how the way in which it was handled was a disappointment. They had a power outage. Computers were down so we couldn’t pay for our check. I offered to leave my credit card and phone number and asked them to call me before they charge my card. Two days later, still no call but there was a charge on my card. I called the restaurant and asked for a copy of my receipt. The woman on the phone who said she was a manager said she would send it to me. I left my email, and nothing. So I called my bank to freeze the charge until they would give me a receipt. I would have been fine with the charge and would have left a tip even though the service was awful but it’s like they refused to show me a receipt. My bank dealt with it.
Excellent high-end restaurant serving Shanghai-inspired food. Service is competent and efficient, if a bit impersonal. Codfish Bao are interesting, as are crispy rolls with shrimp and scallops. Chefs fried rice is very good, as is a broccoli dish. Chicken dish is extravagantly spicy, but probably the best of the evening.
Extremely breathtaking interior. It’s like the ceiling is so high to prove a point that they can afford to have so much unused air space in midtown. All the seats are cushioned booths rimmed with metal railings that suspend large glass orbs. It’s nothing short of glamorous. If you’re coming here to get full, you’re probably ready to spend a lot of money. I’d invest in the appetizers. The wagyu puffs were a delight. As for the mains, nothing tasted quite like what the items were named, but they were still good. Just beware: each dish was portioned for sharing between 2 or 3 people. The menu says that the Dan Dan noodle is an individual portion, and they mean it. There’s less noodles in that bowl than in 1 portion of white rice.We also ordered the Peking duck. The duck was brought out onto its own table with its own spotlight. A skilled man cut the duck and it’s delicate skin to serve with pancakes, cucumbers, scallions, and hoisin sauce. It’s flaky and tender and the pancakes are surprisingly amazing. The duck butcher returned to the kitchen with most of our duck, though. We were anxious to see the duck legs return so we could gnaw them clean. But the duck “served 2 ways” is virtually unrecognizable the second way: sautéed pellets of meat that no longer taste like duck with green beans and peppers meant to be eaten as lettuce wraps. It leaves you wondering if the lettuce wrap meat is from the same duck you saw earlier. It’s still something I’d eat, but I’d totally rather clean the carcass of the duck for them.
Don’t trust Instagram and Facebook posts. They are not real. It couldn’t just be a coincidence that so many people had unpleasant experience with this restaurant, particularly on waiter side. I am Chinese. This is probably the worst Chinese restaurant in NYC. Service and food quality is not on par with the price. You can spend same amount of money or even less to get way better food and service.Waitress is unfriendly and very cold. She spilled out some coke on the table but she forgot to clean it up.
Took good friends from out of town on opening night and was blown away by the variety of flavors, textures and styles. Chinese food like Ive never tasted before, it wont blow your mouth away with heat unless you want it to, and there are so many options for dietary restrictions - low carb, veggie, fish. We over-ordered but everything was great. Omnivores will have the most fun with the Waygu Puffs and the Peking Duck in two courses (!), but dont miss the Jade Asparagus or the Dim Sum Combo - the spinach dumpling is a sleeper hit. Devon was friendly and really knew how to help us decide, drinks were clever and the prices were a good value. A super addition to the neighborhood, will definitely be back.
Its beautiful but the servers spent probably half an hour ignoring us in an only semi-busy space. We never ended up getting water or menus. I had to ask for both after getting fed up for 20 minutes. I got a cocktail and they also forgot it. Definitely seemed like more affluent-looking customers got better service and attention.
While the food was delicious and, at times, inventive, our main dish, the Red Lantern, was served with a hair in it. When our server was notified it was taken away with minimal apology, and then reserved in the middle of the next course, which crowded the table. At a restaurant of this caliber, I would expect better hospitality, either in better retiming of the service, or a complimentary dish to balance the mishap.
Highlights of the meal were the chicken in chile broth (the sauce/broth was delicious - moderate heat and savory umami) and the halibut noodle soup. Id consider coming back to have more of both! Some dishes were visually impressive, like the fried softshell crab served in a basket of hot peppers. The Peking duck was ok...like others mentioned, the skin isnt crisp and the yellow gobs of duck fat that should have helped crisp the skin were not very appealing. Definitely not the best Peking duck Ive had, despite being the most expensive Peking duck Ive ever had.Very trendy decor.
Hurting New York is a physically stunning restaurant in the space formerly occupied by the now closed Le Cirque. Following DaDong, the Beijing Peking duck chain to NYC, Hutong-a high end luxury spot in Hong Kong-was greatly anticipated by folks like me who love Northern Chinese cuisines. The food was good, but not great, but the reason for the bad review is the service and the attitude of this place towards its customers. Staff are eager but poorly trained. Even the chef who carved the duck tableside did a sloppy job. More disturbing was a incident precipitated by management in which a young single woman was asked, after having been seated at the next table and ready to order was asked to change tables so a group who had been drinking in the bar could be accommodated. This should never happen in.a quality restaurant and reflects poor management and front house staff training. She was embarrassed and so were.we. Maybe this just reflects the newness of Hutong, but right now, I cant recommend it.
Interesting space, a little ornate, but comfortable enough.Commenced the dining experience with: Yu Xiang Crispy Pork Dumpling. A fascinating culinary adventure in consuming Dim Sum. Flavors were good, however a little on the sweet side for my palate, it was an interesting journey.Peking Duck was good, and the string bean duck dish proffered was ok, but at that point you are fairly sated if you are eating for one.Tough to find a really great Chinese restaurant in any city these days, NY offers some of your best chances. SF, has some great Dim Sum haunts, but pure Chinese cuisine (Mandarin Cantonese, etc) alludes the mainland. Need to head overseas to achieve the total sophistication of the culture....
We got a waiter that had a wierd manner. He was ignoring our requests the whole time while being very responsive to the table next to us, and after the food, instead of asking if wed like some desert, he said So? So we asked for the desert menu, he said Actually I just wanted to ask you if you are full and want to order more food. like we didnt say what we said just now. Would love to go back to this place for the desert though. Food is not bad.
We went to dinner tonight with 4 friends. We had a terrible experience. The waiter took 25 minutes to come up & take our order. The food was ok. The duck is one of the most popular on the menu however it is very deceiving. The cut the duck table side give you a few pieces & the rest they take away! For 30 minutes we could not figure out where the duck went! We asked a random waiter since ours was never around & he says the duck will come back. They brought the “duck” back & it was a piece of lettuce with some cut up god knows what. They told us this is the rest of the duck. We could not believe it. 50$ & we got 5 tiny pieces of duck & they didn’t bring anything back. Worst experience left hungry. Would not recommend.
Dim sum is good, especially the baked ones. But other dishes, like the Beijing duck, as one from Beijing, I have to say this is not Beijing duck...a fancy dish, but not authentic. The spicy soft shell, like paying $40+ for just chili...when we asked to pack the food, they dump into the paper bag directly, yes, into the bag...Never see any packing like this around the world...The oil has ruined the bag, so we have to ask them to pack again. We still give 15% service fee, but tbh, should be a penny... After reading the feedback from the owner, I have to lower it to 1 star. You can have you own recipes just don’t call it Beijing Duck, as whoever pays for that is expecting the authentic one... Try rename it see if you get the same amount of order, if not, then you are bragging about the food under the famous dish name...lying to the customers.
Meh food, horrible service. We were in a hurry, I asked if we can order the following items and if we can still eat and get out within 60 minutes or we will be late to our Broadway show. Server said yes. At 50 minutes since we arrived and ordered, we still didnt receive 3 of our items, I asked for an update and reminded him we said the desserts can be brought anytime, not just the end. The server seemed annoyed but said he would check on it again. One item came out 15 minutes later, at the 75 minute mark. I asked to cancel my desserts (the 2 remaining items) and bring the check since we needed to go. We were told the desserts were being made and cant be canceled. Finally 93 minutes in we got the rest of our food and check, making us nearly half an hour late to our show. Horrible customer service for not making sure the food can be done in an hour as agreed and for not canceling the desserts. The food taste was also bland, Ive had better tasting fried rice at Din Tai Fung, better pork belly at any bbq place in Chinatown, and better shrimp dumplings at most dim sum places.
The food did not live up to the reviews. The chicken dish had only a few pieces of chicken in a mound of chilies. Was barely appetizer portions. The service was awful, other than 1 bartender most of the wait staff is not qualified to work a McDonald’s drive up window.
Went with a friend last winter, disappointed. Fancy, pretentious place. Food tastes bland and uninteresting, overpriced, portion small. The only thing good might be the staff, they were all very nice. Of all the Chinese places I went to, this is the one I wont be coming back. Really good Chinese are always those generous and affordable places, never this hype based high-end thing.
A great Chinese restaurant on par with the best in Hong Kong and China, excellent food - the softshell crab was perfectly presented in a giant bowl of peppers, and the cod fish was also delicious and done just right. The only reason didnt give it a 5 star rating is that upon initial checkin, the lady at the counter insisted that all the tables were fully occupied except the one at the entrance. Obviously it wasnt the case because after some complaints to our waiter we were soon seated in the middle of the main dining room, with several empty tables by our side. Will definitely be back for lunch and dinner in the future, but hope the checkin process can be smoother next time!!
I was born and raised in China. I’m from the north. To be honest none of the dishes are northern. But it’s still good Chinese food and upscale setting. I enjoyed. Just want to point out that if you want to have an authentic northern food experience, Aunty Guan is the real deal but not as posh as this place
Food was actually good but not fantastic. Service was aweful. I asked for the chili chicken extra spicy and was told it would be, it came out at a spiciness level of 1 out of 5, seriously?!?! The mala shrimp was the best dish also not spicy nor ma. I asked for the bill Instead of the dessert menu intentionally, the waiter acknowledged me and 5 min later gave me dessert menus. After 10min someone finally came back so I can ask for the bill again. Took another 5 min before another waiter came to see if we got the check, no we didnt. Finally the bill came and the 20% mandatory tip was just insulting for the service rendered. Not coming back. Fantastic place! Have been to the Hutong outposts in HK and London, and this is another exceptional chapter. Beautiful room and great bar space. The soft-shell crab in chiles is amazing, as is the dim sum. The desserts were incredibly inventive as well as delicious. The Bao and the Peach Tears were very special. Great to have a good, authentic Chinese restaurant in a lovely setting in NYC.
Ive lived in NYC my entire life and worked in this midtown area for the last 10 years. This is the most exciting restaurant opening, the food is fantastic and brings some life to this part of the citys culinary milieu. Host is extremely friendly along with all of the staff, helpful and knowledgeable. Havent had Peking duck that good in a decade. Dim sum is bomb, soft shell crabs (lantern) better than New Orleans. The bao dessert is a wake up for anyones palate. As the Termintor said, Ill be back
Came here after seeing Instagram photos, despite being warned. Actual high-grade dim sum would have compensated for the snoot. As soon as I walked through the door I was completely ignored by four inattentive East European female hostesses. I ordered a variety of dim sum. Nothing in this subpar dining experience impressed. I couldn’t even bring myself to take photos of the mediocrity I was paying an arm and leg for. Do your wallet and stomach a favor and resist the temptation to try it for yourself.
High end elevated Chinese in the overly grandiose space formerly occupied by le Cirque in the Bloomberg building. Amazing dim sum especially the mille feuille dumplings, perhaps as Pete Wells said, best in the city. But some of the mains were inconsistent. Interesting import from Hong Kong by way of London.
In the absence of everything but rudeness, impossible to even make a review theres no way to go see this place even the setting of the restaurant is an absolute mess, terrible smells everywhere, nothing but the worst of the worst pretentious and foremost lack of what they have achieved in Asia. Just to see champagne cellar infective intense fluorescent light, destroying those precious fermented juices, speaks buy them self.

2022-04-13Phenomenal modern Chinese food!! The ambiance is great, service is great, however the food is exceptional.Half Peking duck was enough to share amongst 4 of us, the crispy prawns, fried rice, noodles and Wagyu beef dim sum were absolutely delicious. The sesame flavored old fashioned was very nice. You can’t go wrong with anything you order here ….as long as you’re good with the price tag.I absolutely enjoyed this place and will keep coming back. Reservations recommended.

2022-06-20I’ve been here a handful of times now, and I think it has improved since it opened a few years ago. I most recently came with my family, who were interested in an upscale rendition of Chinese food. The Peking Duck is available at lunch, while the Flaming Duck is available in the evening and requires a timeslot reservation. We really enjoyed the duck, especially with the amazingly thin pancakes. The ribs, squid and asparagus were all great too. The real tragedy is the lobster. $80+ for a poor fella who could not have weighed more than a pound. I can’t fathom the thought process behind offering such a small dish for such a price! Definitely avoid that one. Otherwise, this place is pretty decent and lunch is nice, quiet, good for the family.

2022-02-22Modern Chinese food. Nice ambiance, kinda dark, saw some using their phone as a flashlight to see the menu. Not too loud do you hear your party talking. Peking duck 2 ways was my favorite. Using the thin rice paper skin instead of the bun was really good. The duck was cut perfectly to fit inside the wrapper with no bones you have to deal with. Hutong lobster was good with lots of flavor maybe just a little too much salt but I still enjoyed it. The sea bass noodles was a little too spicy for my taste. The front door is inside the circular driveway. We had 3 adults and this was the perfect amount of food. Wontons, lobster dumplings, Peking duck 2 ways, duck fried rice, hutong lobster, sea bass noodle.

2022-05-27Lovely ambiance, amazing design and very attentive staff. The food was good, modern and visual, however it would need a little more seasoning & perfecting. The dessert was the highlight of the experience… a must !

2021-12-28Cool ambiance but way over priced for the quality of food. It was fun but $300 for a duck, a couple drinks and an appetizer is a bit much. Pretty good food, just not worth the money. You can get far superior food in Chinatown for 1/3 of the price. No fancy ambience, but the quality is superior in China Town.

2022-07-04Had a reservation for 5:00 p.m. dinner.Seated promptly and service was impeccable. Staff paid attention to very fine details. The decor was modern. Seats were comfortable. It was near empty when we arrived around 5:00 p.m., other guest started arriving around 6:00 p.m. for dinner. It was a nice mixed of both Asian and non-Asian guests. I would suggest having a reservation.Started with the wagyu millefeuille which was extremely tasty. The half-peking duck had really crispy skin. We had to wrap the duck with our hands without tongs which got a little messy. If their wrappers did not come half folded (which required unfolding before being able to wrap), it would have been a nicer experience. The wrappers also came in a bamboo steamer which was nice, however this allowed the wrappers to be cooled down too quickly way before we were able to finish the dish. They do however offer wrapper refills if more wrappers are needed. Just tell your server and a nice hot steamer of fresh wrappers will be delivered. The second part of the Peking duck where they took the leftover duck meats to stir fry with diced string beans served with lettuce wrap was a let down. The dish was under seasoned and visually not appealing. The Red Lantern dish (softshell crabs crispy and with special dry rub seasoning served in a giant bowl with dried red peppers) was very yummy without being too spicy.Dessert was bao and soy. The bao part was a moose shaped like a bao. The soy part was a soybean flavored ice cream. Presentation was spectacular and taste was intricate. We took a photo in the champagne runway, which was part of the hall separating the bar from the main restaurant. We looked into the bar, and looks like a nice place for a drink after work.Overall, enjoyable experience, great atmosphere and impeccable service; food can be a little bit more boldly flavored (food seems a bit under flavored for my Asian palate).

2022-07-04Beijing duck is not that bad. Not recommend 2 people go there as the portion is pretty large. The soft shell crab 🦀 is not bad but better just eat one per person, otherwise would feel a bit oily.

2022-06-09I have been to Hutong many times and I absolutely love it for many reasons. The ambiance is classy and cozy. The staff is always friendly. Their dim sum is beautifully made and presented as well. Some of my favorites are the wagyu beef millefeuille and scallop shumai. Also definitely try the Beijing Duck. That’s my absolute favorite too.

2021-11-21I really enjoyed the food. The fried prawns and the dessert were my favorites. Im grateful that the ribs werent salty, but the seasoning wasnt particularly interesting. The iberico dumplings had only a mild hint of jamon. The mushroom buns were very cute, but its not hard to find tastier buns. The presentation was excellent, but at this price point I expected more flavor. The service was efficient and friendly, but not very communicative about the food.

2022-01-03We popped in for the happy hour and it was amazing! We got the dim sum platter, scallops prawn garlic wontons, Sanchen spiced chicken, and the roasted spicy cod bao. Also got the comfortably numb for the drink (spicy and sweet drink). Very generous portions for happy hour. Everything blew our minds. We will definitely be back.
