Il Mulino in other cities:
This is one of those I dont usually write reviews but this experience was so bad that it compelled me to write one situations. We booked a table for outside - as my grandparents who were dining with us did not feel comfortable eating inside. My grandma even stopped by days before when she was in the neighborhood to make sure everything was in order. When we got there for our 530 reservation, there were no tables available, so we accepted a table inside. Then, it took about an hour and a half after ordering for our entrees to come out. During the 45 minutes or so between appetizers and the main course, we didnt hear anything from our waiter - no updates or apologies, until we started to ask where the food was. It still took about 20 minutes from when we first asked for an update to when we were actually served. We got the excuses that the kitchen got busy and so on, but meanwhile other tables that arrived after we did were served their meals in that time.It was just poor, poor service all around - the waiter was not apologetic and made excuses and did not act with any urgency to get us fed. And then after we were finally served, the waiter simply did not speak to us for the rest of the meal, just putting things down on the table without saying a word. We were treated with utter contempt. The manager, who we dealt with in booking the table and in re-seating us inside, did not come over once, either. We understand that there might be COVID-induced work shortages and challenges, but this was not the level of service commensurate with a restaurant at this price point. To their credit, they did offer us a bottle of wine and dessert as an apology, which we graciously accepted. But upon returning home and opening the wine, we quickly realized that they gave us a bad bottle of wine, that tasted horribly and clearly was not stored properly. I dont know if this was on purpose or accidental, but its nevertheless what we ended up with.A very disappointing experience - we will not be back.
Rather expensive food but well prepared and tasty. For the cost, service was poor. We spilled some appetizer sauce and the waiter didnt bother with cleanup nor the placing of a fresh napkin over spillage. When I eat Italian Im usually assured plenty of crusty, warm bread, but not here. They did have a very tasty faccacio but served it sparingly. We were three and after consuming the bread tray our waiter didnt bother asking nor replacing it with more. Now at $400 for our meal I couldnt see having to beg for some more bread, it was beneath my dignity. Finally the fish I ordered was totally wrong. I like texture in my food. I ordered a whole crispy fried fish with bones, head, tail and skin. Unfortunately I got a steamed piece of filleid fish sans head, tail, skin nor crispy texture. While the taste was quite good, its flesh sadly lacked the texture I craved. I wont go back!
I was very disappointed at the outcome of this restaurant, it was my birthday and i made sure to write that on the reservation, my husband and i walk in, i was sat down in a not desired table considering i wanted more privacy with my husband, when i asked if i can be sat down in a better table for us, i was ignored. This was surprising (this is me respecting all of the covid rules of course). At arrival , our temperature was not checked , nor did any of the waiters introduce them self by name (not that this matters, but would have made me feel more welcomed) ....a lovely couple walks in , the guy mentions its her birthday , all of the waiters immediately surround them and sat them down in the table i originally requested, their temperature was taken and some papers were given to them to sign, our waiter very nicely introduced himself by name to the couple. The food was not bad, however my husband and i were stereotyped and i regret so much turning down a much better restaurant because i was so excited to finally come to il mulino... will not recommend to my friends, family or colleagues.P.s Our temperature was never taken.
Went to Il Mulino for dinner with a group and it was a fantastic culinary experience. The food was delicious. I had the opportunity to try 6 different entree dishes and everything was simply amazing. The wait staff is extremely attentive. The atmosphere of this restaurant is great too. It can get noisy when the place is packed, but it felt very intimate nonetheless.
Unfortunately the staff will rudely and aggressively take away your dessert plates while you are still eating and make it clear that they want you to leave the moment the time hits 10:45pm. We were a party of 3 last night with an 8:30pm reservation. We ordered 2 expensive bottles of wine, appetizers, full meals, and dessert. We were easy customers who engaged with the staff in a polite way with no special requests and no complaints. Our bill was $600. And to my dismay, the staff practically pulled the dessert forks out of our mouths in order to get us to go home. I’m a single New Yorker who dines out at high end restaurants all over Manhattan several days a week. This was by far the most rude experience I’ve ever had.
What a wonderful restaurant! I love everything about it. This is definitely my favorite place for Italian food. The service is amazing. Everyone is so friendly. I love when the waiter carve Parmesan cheese next to my table. It is so delicious. I always add it to my pasta.
We dined here Monday night and the food and service were excellent as usual. They were packed by 6 put our waiter and the servers padding bread and cheese were professionalI had my favorite - the pasta frutti de mare and the fish was tender and juicy. Others in the party had scampi’s and lobster bisque. Everything was excellent. We will return
The food was very good, but the service was rushed and pushy. A restaurant of this alleged caliber and expense should allow diners to enjoy their meal without constant questioning if you are finished. Also the captain insisted we order the entire meal at one time when we asked for an appetizer while we were studying the menu. Definitely not the Italian vibe I am accustom to.
I am all for paying top dollar for good quality food, but this? I ordered a beet & mango salad with goat cheese and got a tiny pile of chopped up, over-salted beets with a few tiny pieces of mango and several crumbles of goat cheese straight out of an Alouette container ($22). My girlfriend got a spinach salad ($16 for the same salad that you would pay $4.50 for at a fast food chain. Again, I believe in paying $16-22 for salads, but please make them worth the money) and two glasses of water (sparkling and still, $10 a pop -- GLASSES, not bottles). In addition, upon walking in, we were completely ignored by the bartender and stood around until someone noticed us, we were asked about a reservation (we didnt have one, but the restaurant was completely empty) and got seated in a tiny corner seat right behind the bar, where it was tight and hot and I kept bumping the back of my head on the bars edge. We had to ask for menus, the chefs and waiters were sitting around the nicer, better situated dining tables, having a grand time. Overall, poor quality food and unprofessional staff.
My favorite and my wifes favorite for more than a decade. Ive been to multiple locations and this one represents the art as well as any other. I could live on the free-be appetizers at the beginning, but the main courses are excellent as well. Tremendous wine list. Ill keep coming as long as the restaurant and I are still functioning.
Went for dinner. Sunday night. At the beginning they served everyone with delicious parmesan cheese and various Italian breads. Then brisceta with tomatoes, a sliced sausage, and grilled sliced zucchini. Everything was delicious but zucchini was too oily but still good. Soft shell crab, was good but a bit salty. Chicken with mushrooms good. Risotto good, gnocchi good. Service excellent. White cloth linens and napkins. Some water glasses a bit stained/ dirty with prints of lips. Atmosphere pleasant. Menu hard to read in the dark. Many specials verbal only. Overall, 4.5 stars. Thank you!
The food was five star quality as was the service. The winelist will keep me from returning. The least expensive bottle of red was $90 and went up fast from there. And it was not a long list. Most offerings were in the several hundred dollarsWhites were the same pattern. Absurd
I hate to say it - I was disappointed. I ordered a veal dish that was served with potatoes. The veal was fine, but the potatoes were over-cooked, dried out and tough. Also, the price for two glasses of rose champagne was a shock when the bill came: $50. Would I go again? Yes - Ive eaten at Il Mulino several times & its been excellent until this visit.
We went for our first time and wanted to like it. Tables are too close and waiters have a hard time delivering food....which is excellent and way too much so, going forward, no need for appetizer and also entree. Waiters are real pros working and happy and nice. Very expensive ($18 for a vodka on the rocks) but will wait for second try to comment really after we order smarter. Noise is a problem and that, obviously, comes with success
Went for a Restaurant Week lunch. I had the distinct impression that they dont really want RW customers. For example we had to ask for the RW menu and then they only gave us one copy. It took 2 requests to get butter and 2 to get more bread. And instead of being offered choices of bread as we were when seated a small plate of only a couple of varieties were provided.Food was very good and Id go back but service needs improvement.
Once they realized that we were there for the restaurant week menu, we were treated like 2nd class citizens and rushed through our meal. Food was good but service was TERRIBLE. If they only realized that some people use restaurant week to find new places to eat that they will return to, maybe they would change their attitude. They are defeating the purpose of participating in restaurant.
I had one of the worst dinners ever in this expensive restaurant where the tiny tables are close together and the waiters kept bumping into my husbands chair. How could i miss with a fresh artichoke salad and pasta with mushrooms and truffles? I missed. To start with, the spikes were still on the artichoke leaves and i had to pull them out of my mouth.! One expects hearts of artichokes at these prices! And never expects spikes in any restaurant. Then, the most flavorless pasta i have ever had with no taste of truffles at all. I complained and said that i would take the dinner home with me if they could add some garlic which was supposed to be there originally but had been left out of the dish. When I went to try it later cayenne pepper had be added without asking me if i wanted it. I cant eat that so I had to throw the $60 entree away. I am disgusted with this place and cant recommend it at all.
The food was very good, but could never be good enough to compensate for the arrogance of the hostess and the maitre d’ . We waited for over an hour past our reservation time, while parties that came in well after us were seated. They obviously knew the staff and were pushed ahead of the non-regulars. After complaining twice to the hostess, the only reason we finally got a table was because I waved and glared at the maitre d’ from across the bar as he was getting ready to seat yet another party our size that arrived 45 minutes after us. You know what they say about karma...be careful, you never know who people work for!!!
I honestly dont know how this place gets good reviewsI ordered chicken parm and asked for it without the cheese (it was late and I didnt want heavy cheese). Waiter refused to make it like that until I insisted. Even then chicken was rubberyCarbonara was way too many mushrooms and too saltyHad to pour our own $200 bottle of wine numerous timesTiramisu hands down best I have had
Il mulino...more like ewww mulino. $200 before tip for 2 glasses of wine, 2 apps, and 2 entrees. $9 for still water. The Cesar salad tasted like kraft dressing. The spaghetti and meatballs was mediocre. Broccoli rabe is supposed to be bitter but this was biiiitter to the point it was inedible. Took 15 minutes to get a menu but got asked 5 times in 20 minutes if i wanted another glass of wine. The glasses of wine were good pours though. Go to carabbas 3x for the same price
I’ve never experienced such a poorly trained staff. The water was poored from My left side so that I had to stop the conversation & lean back to avoid being hit in the head with the metal water pitcher. Food was served & removed from one place so that again, conversation stopped & we all ducked our heads to not get hit by a plate of food! These are just a couple examples of a staff that doesn’t know the protocols of serving. It all created an extremely unenjoyable experience & I would never return. Food & service is good at too many ither Italian restaurants in the city.
I Made a reservation two weeks prior for a special occasion with my daughters , reconfirmed that afternoon- But when we got there 5 MN before our reservations we waited an hour before finally I decided to leave ! I’ve had good experiences there before but I will never go back . There are many other excellent restaurants in New York!
What cant you say about Il Mulino? Its amazing. Food is spectacularly presented and each bite is a culinary experience. That being said, youre paying. This isnt your mom and pop share a plate Italian restaurant. The experience starts with a couple of salads and some chunks of parmesan. So good. Then they serve you whatever youd like. I had the osso buco and it was succulent. Dont hesitate.

2021-12-28Modern Italian fine dining. Friendly waiters, we liked our waiter so much. One of the best Italian meals Ive had in New Your City. Mulino has a very nice atmosphere and is nicely decorated. They served generous proportions. I tried the Scampi and mushroom rissotto and they were clean, big and so tasty. They also make very good cocktails. II Mulino is located at 37 E. 60th St. New York City

2022-04-25The best Italian restaurant in NYC. Hard to find any fault. All food is fresh and hot. Fantastic service. Complimentary starter is a brilliant touch. Can’t wait to visit again.

2022-02-15Amazing food, the best service I ever had. My wife and friends loved the place. High quality food, comfortable great music, the waiters provided an excellent service. The lobster ravioli, veal and mushroom is amazing. If you love veal you must try it. The wine selection is great and the desert was really good. It was a nice time. The money spent was well worth it.

2022-05-25Beware of this restaurant, the service is horrible. Definitely on of the worst dining experience of my life. To begin we dined at this restaurant on May 22, 2022, I had dined here 5 years ago and it was a totally different experience. After 1/2 hour of being given the menu we had to ask someone to take our order. The staff are inattentive and unmotivated. I asked for a slice of lemon and was given a club soda, which I returned. Then the spinach in my soup had sand in it as well as the spinach in my sisters veal. So they clearly dont wash their vegetables. I am a second generation Italian and nothing about the food here is Italian. The veal is drenched in mushrooms and sauce. Our wine and sparkling water was put in a communal bucket away from our table and only poured once. When we asked for more wine we were ignored, then finally after flagging another server, he told us our wine was lost. Our server tried to make it up by giving us a new bottle of wine (which we did not see him open) and free dessert. Once we got the bill, the club soda I didnt order was still on there. I asked them to remove it and they didnt. So needless to say they didnt get a good tip. We left the restaurant and I had forgotten my phone. I went back and they were staring at me for about 5 minutes and wouldnt let me in. Then I got heckled by one of the servers for leaving less tip than they expected. They really think bad service should be rewarded! I will never eat here again.

2021-10-15Highly recommend this upscale restaurant. The waiter Paul had excellent customer service skills. The manager Ruby accommodated us without reservations. The food was delicious! A special thanks to all the staff that keep checking on us and providing us with excellent service…Monica, Temo and Carlos. Miriam and Victor (Miami)

2018-10-03Great for vegetarians. We ate here both lunch and dinner 4 times last week so when I say its good believe me. I cant vouch personally for any of the meat options, however the range of vegetarians options is fine and they all taste great. The service is also pretty good.

2021-12-27I was told by a good friend of mine, this is a must go to while in NYC. I rarely give a bad review, but this place was far from meeting expectations. I can’t think of one thing I enjoy here and spent over $500 for my wife and I. The bar was so-so, the food was just ok, the service is absolutely terrible and while I had a reservation at 8:30, we didn’t get to our table until 9:45. My wife and I were sat between a party of 14 and a party of 8…we kind of got lost in the shuffle I felt like. I literally had to stop a server as he walked by and said, “I’m not sure who or where my server went, but could we get out check?” And the noise, it was like dinning at a baseball game, ridiculous.Just terrible all around.

2021-12-05This place you simply have to visit. One of the best restaurants I have eaten in. The place is elegantly decorated with pictures of celebrities in a cozy yet romantic environment. The staff are friendly, attentive and very polite. As soon as yo sit, you are served a slice of cheese which is lovely. The food is superb, their ravioli is out of this world. Their salads are fresh and not pre-made and kept in the fridge like some places. Their desert are Devine.Their waiting staff are always attentive and ready to serve. If u are visiting NY, you have to make sure you go to this restaurant.Cant wait to go back next time.
