Truly a wonderful resource for the Washington Square community! This center within the NYU Kimmel Student Union complex is ideal for a variety of events: film, theater, lecture hall, exhibits and so forth. We have attended more than a dozen events here and have nothing but praise for the venue and its staff. Past years artistic direction is just complete first-class. We urge more of the same for joy and delight all around...
Great acoustics, nice atmosphere, polite ushers, beautiful place. Went to hear the Songs of the Soul Concert dedicated to the music of Sri Chinmoy, a Bengali born composer of amazing spiritual music. Really enjoyed in the sounds of various instruments and beautiful voices. Only one thing which is good to know, the hall is under ground - meaning, no cell phone signal while you are down there. If you are meeting someone and they are running late, you will need to go up all the way to the entrance to speak with or text to them.
I saw the Bloodlines by the Stephen Petronio Company and it was breathtaking. The choreography, the music, the costumes and the performance was outstanding. The staff was helpful and kind. We had the best seats available. It’s conveniently placed next to a train station.
Was super excited for my first Skirball experience. I have been following them for a couple years and have always been super interested in their programming. Finally made the leap and splurged on a couple tickets for Five Easy Pieces. I was so disappointed when the space and staff did not serve the piece at all. After sitting in our broken, sagging seats, I commented to my friend before the show that the energy of the room felt like a school assembly - this wasnt a bad thing when I said it. There is a certain community feeling to that, but it soon became so distracting. The space amplified every audience noise and there was a LOT of audience noise. An entire group of 6-8 college students in front of us were on their phones, chitchatting, and sharing pictures with each other on their devices the WHOLE show. I had a pleasure of watching every Snapchat and Instagram story from one womans entire social network. People got out of their seats and left and came back into the theater multiple times. Five different times someones phone rang or alarm went off during the show. I understand these things are generally out of a spaces control, but there wasnt any announcement or even a program note to remind people to be courtesy.I brushed that off because - sure audiences can suck - and tried my best to focus on the production. BUT then we were sitting pretty close to the sound/lighting table and the staff were loudly whispering to each other. Ive never felt like an upset crotchety old theatergoer (Im 25), but that night I did! It felt like no one in the space cared to be there - and that would of been fine if I hadnt paid money. Wish I got to see that piece in a space that cared a bit more. Super disappointing. Hesitant about returning, which is a huge bummer because they present great work - but if there space is like that every time it isnt worth the time/money.Try to see the work they are presenting elsewhere if possible or maybe check if the night you are going the box office releasing a lot of comps? That may of been part of the issue? If it is a louder piece like a musical work or dance Im sure it will be fine. I dont know. Felt like no one wanted to be there and took away from the entire experience and in the end I just felt bad for the performers and my wallet.
A fine theater, well-designed, excellent acoustics, yet the soundman failed terribly with lackluster audio for such a decent compliment of audio monitors/speakers. For lectures/speaking/talks etc., its superb, yet considering todays standard, multimedia, audio needs - perhaps the current audio system requires some fixes and upgrades to add a touch of fidelity, effects and bass for events which use a lot of either music and/or audio elements.Id give it 5 stars, but the audio simply sucked for the 1st part of the event last Monday. I told the sound/audio guys to add fidelity and bass. They listened, happily obliged and the second-half went well (much better,) yet still lacked the heart, punch and fullness it needed... Perhaps it may have been the audio guys....? IDK but they better get on with exceptional AUDIO....!Lastly, I really loved the interior; its simply beautiful with an elegant, minimalist, American design and feel...
Went there on Mar. 3rd, 2017 evening, equipment failure after intermission. Instead of apologizing and issue a refund, management had us sit there for an hour while the show Boom Circus tired to get their act together. Reputable businesses respect customers time, and refund for services not rendered. But not this place!
The Skribal has to find better people to serve the public. Joe the manager at the box office is a confused loser and very unprofessional...the staff is as incompetent as it gets. The child they have answering the phone talks like a bimbo constantly saying umm and like. Im sure there are smarter people willing to work in the box office.
For the first time I attended to see a show in NYU skirball, I found it fantastic, the kindness at the box office the theater in general magnificent, I was admired to observe in the right corner a translator in sign language, thousand and thousand applause for such KNIGHT I wanted to greet you at the end of the play (CORO GAY CIUDAD DE MEXICO) but they did not let me in, I regret that they had not taken it to the center of the stage to receive the deserved applause, something that mentions one of the ushers, I felt very comfortable with the chair I could get .Sec O boxes .... Row OB ... seat 9.I congratulate the organizers for having someone like the KNIGHT of sign language, since although it was not this day, my partner is deaf ... This way a greeting of applause for the ....

2018-07-04This modern theater is a great place to see live acts. The view of the stage was great and they have a very good sound system. It is extremely well kept, has a very polite and helpful staff. They do have a bar area that has alcohol which you can not bring in the theater but bottled water is allowed in. They also have gender neutral restrooms which is a great move forward but for some it could be uncomfortable. No one honestly seemed to care at the show I attended.

2019-05-30The Skirball Center at NYU holds a beautiful auditorium (with a bar if youre so inclined). The seats are comfortable, the views of offer stage are great from pretty much anywhere, and the sound quality is great. My experience here is mostly with the annual World Science Festival, which I highly recommend you attend!

2018-10-24We went here for a NYU presentation that was more than worthwhile. If youre going to compare universities, be sure to check out NYU first, then see how the others add up. We still havent decided, but NYU is certainly a top contender.

2019-05-02Ive been here a few times to see talks during the World Science Festival, and also once to see Brian Cox. Its a great venue, not too big, not too small. The staff (not sure if theyre students or not) are incredibly friendly and attentive with helping you find your seating area based on your ticket.

2020-02-20We watched a dance performance by a group from Europe and the members were mostly Belgian and mature looking but very agile. The cello musician was French. I didnt read anything about the show nor the material. I just saw it because I love anything by Bach. And I wasnt disappointed. It was fantastic, to say the least.I didnt realize the stage was really that big and wide, since the last time I was here was years ago to watch a play on an entrapped miner, which was not a disappointment too.I am sure I will be back if theres another show worth watching according to my tastes and preferences. It has been worth venturing here especially when you have a lot of options to choose from in NYC when you like live performances.

2019-10-24Very nice yet very simple theater behind Washington Square Park, where I saw Ailey II this year, just after my 30th birthday. Amazingly, I was able to drive and find free street parking spots that were available. As I was walking, two ladies were around, trying to find supporters for their blood drive - true college/community atmosphere but it was still quiet and calm outside on this Saturday afternoon. Inside, the place was packed without feeling overcrowded. I appreciated that I had elbow room in my seat.

2018-10-02We went to attend a tabletop Shakespeare play, which was fun and unique. The venue seemed nice and intimate and the event was well organised

2019-04-20Whats not to love about this place? The space is large, accommodating, and as good as, or better, than some Broadway theaters. Their programming is excellent as Ive yet to see a bad performance here. Even the unknown shows, like the one currently running, Hot Brown Honey, are always absolute gems. From a location standpoint its near public transportation and across from Washington Square Park, which makes for great strolls before or after the show. There are also tons of nearby places for pre or post-show dining. Inside, the seats are spacious and accessible, and the bathrooms are spotless. Their lighting and stage effects rival anything on the Great White Way and they can do any production justice. Best of all, the staff are always helpful and friendly, from the ticket booth people to the ushers. Like I said, whats not to love?

2017-02-13A great venue for many fantastic performances. Buy your tickets early as the good shows always sell out. Pro tip: there arent any bad seats in the house but the best ones are the center seats in the 4-6th row.

2014-09-05Awesome venue for any show. The place is a nice size with a grand staircase to go towards the theater. The bathrooms are clean and spacious too. I approve and look forward to coming to more shows at this center!
