Very cool, hip atmosphere, and friendly, courteous service. Finally made it over there recently for a bite and a drink. The wings were pretty dreadful; completely dried out and chewy. The cocktails are priced like a cocktail bar, but are fairly one-dimensional in their flavors. Definitely a place for non-discerning palates who are more into the vibe than what theyre eating or drinking.
Jakes Dilemma is an important piece to a very successful and enjoyable chain of popular party bars with drinking games galore. The staff here are very kind and accommodating, and youll probably want to ask one of the bartenders for their number. The space provides a front and back bar with pong tables in between for beer pong, flip cup, slap cup, and body shots, although Im not sure about the last two. When the weekend hits, this place is packed and service can be slow and bathrooms difficult to manage, but overall this spot is definitely worth the money and a trip, no dilemma.
This is a nice bar to go to and have a private event because they have a space in the back for your event with a bar. The food was pretty good. They had a pasta, chicken tenders, and some type of fried vegetable with cheese which was also good. They had security standing at the event space so that no one could enter but your guests. And the music was pretty good. I think its a nice after work spot to go to.
Very poor service. My girl and I went in the middle of the day on Saturday and were met with the worse service Ive ever experienced. We ordered waters and an order of fries and had to wait 20 minutes for the waters. After that we got beer and shots, which never showed up. At that point we left, having never received our drinks or ordered food. The chuckleheaded bouncer chased us down the block telling us to pay our tab and thats not how it works.
Nice friendly environment for the most part. Nice bar and fair prices. However there was this tall big looking dude walking around randomly starting problems with people asking them to step outside to fight (obviously drunk) and none of the bouncers did anything about it when they were clearly standing next to me and noticed what was going on. The bouncers will tell you to keep the stair way clear so people can walk through and enforce petty rules but looks like they won’t handle trouble makers their own size. But yeah Its a cool spot to hang but I would recommend you watch your back around there especially if that dudes a local.
This was my first time going to this place. I came out to celebrate a good friends birthday. This place is a bar slash pub. The atmosphere is very welcoming, the food and drinks are really good. The setting reminds me of a college hangout. I had a great time and I will be back.
Fun bar, has beer pong setups. Went during the late afternoon-evening. Great for work functions and group meetups. They served $9-$12 pitchers of beer in which I was drinking straight out of... because of the price...(I do not condone said behavior). Had a blast. Staff was great. Food was awesome. Also participated in Star Wars Trivia... in which a random guy beat every team single-handedly. It was insane.
The kind of bar you went to in college relocated to Manhattan. Complete with beer pong and flip cup. Pretty solid beer selection, though. They also have pretty good bar food to soak up a few of those beers. It can get fairly crowded on weekends, so dont go if youre not friendly.
Never do these reviews, but i felt compelled because the awesome service and atmosphere. Love this place. Great drinks, food, and BEER PONG! They accommodated for our somewhat large group, and the servers were awesome. The bartenders are cool too, he didnt know how to make one of the cocktails I requested but when i told him how he gave it too me free of charge. He said he learned something new. Cool guy, wish I tipped you at least.Jakes will forever be my staple spot for a good time out with friends.
Great place for a chill environment with a fairly young crowd. Their tater tots are the bomb. They also have a wide space where you can play beer pong with friends. Everyone is pretty friendly. When its busy, its really busy so make sure you plan your seats unless you dont mind standing
Did you know jakes has a beautiful private room downstairs?! and i mean beautiful. like Spanish/Moroccan style decor. and with a separate bathroom from the rest of the bar. such a hidden gem! the service was FANTASTIC. theres a bar in the room and waitstaff for food. super cute everything. highly recommended. a far cry from the beer pong upstairs, it was really really sophisticated and nice.
Good Place to chill, has all your basics...nice bar, tables in the back for beer pong and fooseball or just to hang and chat. Crowds on the the weekend turn quickly into the college scene. Early happy hour times are generally patronized by the after-workers, neighborhood folk and regulars.
Theyll solve your dilemmas here, especially if its being tight on money! Definitely appreciated the low prices for the drinks here, at it wasnt even happy hour, so I can imagine how those prices are. It gets pretty packed in here, but theres enough room to move. Definitely a rowdier crowd here, especially on the farther end near the rear, but if you want a more relaxed night, stick near the bar. Bartenders didnt seem so bad on my visit, never ignored us. But like other reviewers say, you may or may not find a mixed crowd here on a given night, it really depends. Definitely more college aged than anything and has that frat feel to it before it finally clears us.
Place was a nice hope in the wall bar with a nice atmosphere, came here for a friends birthday but it was within Jakes dilemma called the oak cellar iirc and just had to pay a cover and had an open bar for 3/4 hours and the bartender Drew? Was really nice she was very willing to help out and be ready to take the next order ,if it was slow for you downstairs in the private room you can just migrate to the top where everyone else is and jam to the same music. If only the private room had different music it would really change the feel of the room or maybe have a separate DJ so you can play what you want ,thought mightve been the drinking but the drinks started to taste a bit weak it maybe it was just drinking more and not noticing the taste but you cant expect much if its an open bar for 20? Or so people and not cut the liquor ,maybe next time go with beer since its sealed and harder to cut.
I am a native New Yorker and will keep to the directness of how we are known to be :)Drinks: Great beer selection. Standard pub drinks.Space: The space is very eclectic. If you want to have a pub experience stay in the main area, if you want to play beer-pong walk up the small set of stairs and if you want to feel like you are in a chill lounge go straight ahead to the curtained off room.Scene: People watching. College scene. Pickup scene. Singles scene. Girls night out.Crowd: 20s-30s Mostly college students and locals.Service: Excellent! The staff is very courteous and attentive!
My friend has a handicap that causes him to walk strange - bouncer told him he was too “drunk” to enter after watching him walk up. I tried to explain its a handicap and that he was was not drunk, but he was still refused entry...even said I was lying about it (which was obviously not the case...he actually has a disability). Sad to see this type of behavior. Please avoid this bar.
Work holiday party great relaxed atmosphere , they kept the food flowing for the entire event , bartenders were fast and drinks were good. Aux provided so we could play music, private area and bathroom, security at the door. It was a little expensive in my opinion for bar food but would attend again.
I dont normally go to bars, but a coworker of mine was moving to the other side of the country, and this place happen to be her favorite hangout place. For a first time visit to a bar, it was a surprisingly pleasant experience. There is an outdoor seating area, for those who prefer to enjoy a nice and quiet meal along with their drinks. In between those seats, there is an entrance that leads into the bar, guarded for ID checks. Our group arrived around 7:30 pm on a Friday, trying to catch their half-price happy hour, which starts from the moment they open their doors until 8 pm. It was the perfect time to come as the crowd was just starting to trickle in. We were able to pick a strategic standing spot on the upper level where we get to see a birds eye view of the bar, watch some sports on TV, play with their beer pong table in the back, and still be close enough to the stairs leading to the restrooms on the lower level. A fair warning though, if you block the staircase leading to their downstairs lounge, the staff will ask you to clear the way, repeatedly. From what my coworkers told me, they usually hold themed parties and trivia nights in the lounge downstairs. The decor is minimal and casual. The place seems to primarily gather a crowd of college students and young professionals.Moving onto the drinks...maybe its my unfamiliarity with prices of drinks in general, but they are surprisingly very affordable for a bar on the Upper West Side. And with the happy hour, the prices are practically close to nothing. The appetizers and food were pretty decent as well and reasonably priced. There is an ATM machine inside, but they do take card as well. You can keep your tab open or closed, but if you do want to keep your tab open, they will ask to keep your ID. I tried their pineapple juice with vodka and sex on the beach, both were refreshing but I much prefer the sweeter sex on the beach. An added bonus, they also have busboys who go around collecting your empty glasses, so make sure you have enough to leave tip. Overall, it was definitely a pleasant experience. Not a place I would normally go on my own accord, but would recommend for those who do frequent the bar scene.
My best friend and I love this neighborhood spot for the PICKLE BACK SHOTS!Nothing super special about Jakes pickle back shots, but its our spot for them.Friday and Saturday nights are really fun and crowded but make for a fun atmosphere to play beer pong and relive your college weekend memories. It draws a fun and friendly crowd -- guys who just want to dominate the pong tables or girls in groups. Staff is nice; and Ive never waited too long for a drink ;)
First and foremost, I have to say that not only is this place super fun, with great food, but their staff is amazing! Bekim went above and beyond to help me out when I asked for suggestions regarding food and beer. Not only was I satisfied, but I was super impressed with how knowledgeable he was in his recommendations. I would definitely recommend this as a great spot to have some drinks with friends and enjoy some awesome food. Ask for Bekim, you wont be disappointed!!
This was a fantastic bar until my cousin got kicked out for absolutely no reason. He was sitting there talking to a gentlemen drinking water. There were a few men who got kicked out, which we werent told the reason. I personally asked the manager why he got kicked out because they said the manager said he had to go and the manager couldnt tell me a legitiment reason why. Fun until your male friend gets kicked out for being a male I suppose.
So this was kind of confusing for my friends and I. At first it looked like a normal bar, but a bit on the back there were beer pong tables. Behind those there was a curtain that have an amazing back room behind it.The waiter seemed to be a friends of a lot of the people in the back room (or that she flirted with them...), but it took her a while to get my order.Other then that - I enjoyed it.
Go on a weeknight and you get a mostly local crowd. Good mix of students and young professionals. Weekends get more of people coming in from the suburbs. Barfood is good, nice ambiance. You also get a lot of student tourists from all over coming in, so its a good atmosphere to meet people looking to mingle.
Complaint 7/27 10pm -A party of 6 of us wanted to sit outside here and we were approached by the bouncer who claimed to be the manager. We presented identification for our service dog, and the vest but he claims it is not allowed. This is against the rules of the Association of Disabled Americans, and the rude manager gave no real justification except that he doesnt consider my dog a service dog. This place and manager will be reported to the ADA. I hope this review shows what a poor judge of character this place employs.
I arrived at Jakes yesterday at approximately 3pm with my dog, and we grab a table outside under the window. Its important to note that there was not a single other person sitting outside. I go inside with a collapsible water bowl and ask the bartender to fill it up for my dog. I order a beer and give the bartender my credit card AND my drivers license. NOTE: Bartender stated that there was no table service outside - too early and nobody to do it. I return to my dog (a 13 year old 55 bound mix), and enjoy my first beer. A gentlemen arrives about 15 minutes later and sits at the table immediately besides my table, and we begin to chat. He immediately takes a liking to my dog, and we enjoy each others company. A few others arrive and sit on the other side of the door in the outdoor seating section. Were there about an hour, and 4 or 5 beers later between myself and my new friend from Scotland, when an employee of Jakes Dilemma comes outside and approaches me. He smiles and asks, what kind of a dog is that? I tell him that the dog is a mix. He then says that dogs are not allowed in the outside patio. Stunned (because 99% of bars in the neighborhood have absolutely no issue with it), I ask the man why? He says its their policy. Fair enough. I ask him the obvious question, why did it matter what kind of dog he is, to which he begins nervously stammering about Service Animals only. I point out that its perfectly legal for dogs to sit in the outdoor cafe portions, but I also acknowledge that it is the businesses right to choose not to allow it.This situation begs a few questions - namely, why did the bartender fill up a dog bowl and give it to me if dogs arent allowed? Why did it take an hour to come out and make us leave? The dog was a perfect gentleman, sitting quietly by my side, so why after 5 drinks and over an hours time did this suddenly become an issue? Particularly in light of the FACT that nobody outside complained, and in fact aside from my new friend, probably didnt even notice the dog was there? To non dog people, youve probably stopped reading, but I am a dog person, and this is simply comical. I had no problem honestly as the bars on Amsterdam Avenue are plentiful, and actually have servers come out and serve you, instead of requiring you go inside to get your beverage. I go in and pay my tab, and as I come back out, the Scottish gentlemen is also getting ready to leave. I ask him why, and he says because the guy that came out and had me leave was a c&nt, and he didnt want to give them his business! He ended up joining me a block up at Dead Poet! So, to Jakes Dilemma, I say, fare thee well. I, my family, my friends and co-workers will certainly never return while this policy is in place. Cant wait for Frank Macs to open across the street!
Got thrown out by a bouncer after a drunk girl told him that I stole her scarf, which was my scarf. I had gone there for 5 years and even the new-ish and very cute female bartender would not back me so the extremely new and incredibly unintelligent bouncer was able to have his way. But! I still have my scarf. Theyd have to pry it from my cold dead hands. Subsequently called the police on them for harassment and disputed the credit card charges for that night successfully.
Hello everyone, I want everyone to know this story. An african American Woman sit next to my chair at bar, she started talking to me, she looked happy but after she started drinking I realized she wasn’t. she quickly got too drunk and couldn’t walk, I decided to help her getting a cab, when I came back the manager John decided to call me TOXIC to the environment and said he couldn’t serve me, I’m on my way back home, I called the police, he basically told them that my friend was drunk and he couldn’t serve me because I was her friend. Nothing was true, I helped a black woman that everyone was laughing at a white dude bar, where nobody was going to helped her. In conclusion go to this bar if u are a frat white guy, otherwise in defense of all the rest of the people do not step a foot on this bar. Ps: this info has pictures on facebook, youtube vídeo to be posted and yelp negative review to post tomorrow, also...this is my first bad review. guys from jake’s u are great this is where we used to celebrate our things, not anymore, your manager is not a good manager and he is definitely racist. good luck john.
Ive been denied here a few times for wearing gym clothes (while everyone else was wearing the same thing inside but they arrived earlier in the day). Last time I was there the bouncer was extremely strange and physically threatened a friend of a friend so we left. Will prob never go back
Dispicable place .. Refuses to serve people due to political views. Dont go to this place not only are they bias far leftist but extremly rude. If you believe and support freedom of speech i would not attent or give your money to this location. Thwy should be ashamed of themselves and be put out of business
Told my guest from out of town her ID was fake and denied us entry without taking more than a glance at her license. When we told him to look again he said “it’s not only fake, it’s REALLY bad.” Bouncers are terrible here and don’t know what a Florida driver’s license looks like. Never going here again—wish I could give it zero stars.
A long time a go (1994 -2005) this was a fun bar with a diverse & attentive staff.Over the years Jakes has turned into a shitty, poorly run frat house with one goal in mind. Making money off of dim witted children who only know hat to order Red Bull & Vodka. On my last visit there, the bartender demanded I pay for a drink that I previous purchased from the other bartender. When I informed her of this she looked at me and walk away muttering. I vowed never to return.Jakes has two saving graces:Friday Night Happy HourGreat foodBeyond that, the place is only good for watching Frat boys drop roofies like raindrops and the sport of chumps, Beer Pong.Whatever you do, DONT GO!
This bar is one of theveorst places to drink and eat.I had a problem with a rude staffer, paid my bill and called later that night not to make a scene. The person on the phone wouldnt give me the first name of the manager so i could call back the next day.Who am i supposed to talk to?The food was freezer burned and tasted knarly, and the drinks were gross.Steer clear of this place theres to many better options in the big apple.
Extremely racist staff , who refused to serve me because they didnt like my kindIm not sure what that means, but any kind of hate has no place in the world.I cried a little, and was hurt, but all I can do is forgive,And avoid this placeI wish everyone peace, love, and acceptance no matter who you are.....
If you want to spend a horrible night with a fat beer belly bartender with a nasty attitude who catches nervous break down when multi tasking and can not answer any questions from the food menu ...THEN JAKE DILEMMA is where you WANT to spend your evening ... This place is horrible service sucks big time I can only imagine what these bartenders and waiters treat their guest once they had too much too drink....This is def not a welcome cozy nor easy going atmosphere

2022-05-17A great bar and a great staff. It felt like first class on a premier airline! The service was impeccable and meticulous. The dining experience was good but their selection of beer and spirits was amazing! Its close by many stores for shopping needs and the neighborhood is quiet and safe.I cant imagine a better bar experience in New York City. Kudos to Jakes Dilemma!

2022-02-21This place is a complete trash heap. The bartenders are the rudest bunch of people that I have ever seen or come across. They are a little soy boys who get triggered at the side of a hat that they don’t like. Food is garbage the draft beer tasted like the taps hadn’t been cleaned in God knows how long. Avoid this place at all costs. Not to mention the beers are completely overpriced and the booze tasted like they mixed it with water

2019-12-05The server lady whose name is Anita was the best I could imagine—friendly, attentive, quick, you tell me. The bar has a very chill ambiance in a spacious setting. Foods are definitely above average. But I gotta be honest with this dilemma: their draught beers taste watery.

2022-03-08Jakes is a staple of the upper west side, always good drinks and a good time. The servers named Hannah and Drew always makes sure me and my friends have a good time and they go above and beyond.
