My 12 year old daughter and I went for a trail ride on Mother’s Day. It was her first time ever riding a horse and I was so excited. The staff were curt and just seemed on edge. I asked to be in front of or behind my daughter and they said NO. I got to watch my daughters first ride with FOUR people between us. I couldn’t even get a decent picture. I was hoping at the end I could get one, but by the time i turned the corner, she was already off and her horse was gone. Super disappointed. A man who seemed like he might be the owner asked how it was, and I expressed to him how I really wanted a picture of my daughter on the horse and he didn’t respond and just looked away. Brandon was our tour guide. He didn’t turn around and check on anyone the entire ride. The person in front of me had a horse eating grass and didn’t know how to make it stop. There’s nothing like riding horses on the beach, but I just left there so disappointed.
Very disappointing experience. We have gone here before and had a nice time. However, due to a change in policy the horses dont move faster than a slow walk. In addition, the staff were very unfriendly when we asked to go faster and the ride was shorter than promised. I would not recommend this place anymore :(.
Its a family owned business. Located between the belt parkway and the Atlantic Ocean 🌊 where the view is breathtaking. The owner Mr. Danza owner, his wife Joyce at the office and his son Fino tour Guide were super nice and always smiling and helpful. It was a pleasure riding there and am thinking about starting riding classes. When you take a ride in the federal/National recreation area with acres of rugged coastline and pretty forest trails you end up at some point on the beach when you see the ocean there, you wouldnt even feel that you are in New York or Brooklyn anymore. The ride was for almost 45/50 minutes that went by like a 5 minutes. Two for $110 cash but if you pay by CC, it would cost $130 and you should tip your guide as well. Helmets are free and optional. From their website you can find out that they have lots of activities and tons of occasions.Talking to Fino our guide who was riding a very beautiful white Arabian horse, I found out that even in winter and while snowing they still offer rides which was really interesting to me.Definitely going back again and recommending everyone to try it. 👌👍
I’ve been here twice both in November and although it’s not lush it’s a beautiful trail and experience that’s not too far from the city. $70 for 45 min, half of which is along a private beach which is beautiful and serene. I called ahead to confirm covid procedures which were in place and assuming since it’s November, got to have a ride with just my Husband and the tour guide.
I came here with a few friends and it was great. It was a little tough to find as we almost missed the exit... We arent from Brooklyn so the highways are new to us.When we did arrive there was available parking and its a very short walk to the building. When we went in, it was very similar to a bowling alley setup, with a snack bar, shop, and indoor horse riding arena.Ive been to a few horse stalls in the past and went to an agriculture school and I can say that these animals are well taken care of. They were able to gauge what level horse we all needed and we rode western. I also saw people riding English style and I dont know if they have any others. The guide who was with us offered to take photos of our group which was really nice because we rode on the beach and there were little animals and crabs running around. It was crazy to think we never left New York City and were riding horses on a beach! We rode for an hour and returned to the stalls. We did run for a bit but I wish we were able to do that a little more as that was the most fun for me!
I enjoyed the experience, it was awesome. The facilities were immaculate. My only concern is the saddle and blanket, tack Was in horrible condition. It was garbage. I would highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys horseback riding. Just be sure and check the equipment. The staff was excellent. Very courteous and attentive.
Took my son for the first time and I honestly feel like I should have gone to another facility for that first time experience. He wasnt old enough for a horse so he had to do a pony rides and the guide didnt even go fully around the track. It wasnt a busy day and I felt like he was shortchanging us which I did not appreciate because it wasnt like I received a discounted price. ($40 for a whack a$$ 10 short half-laps is robbery) .The overall energy was that we were not wanted or welcomed there which was disappointing . There was no mention of lessons, specials, or any other additional services- I basically had to collect the information myself which was a turnoff. This place needs to develop their customer service for PAYING customers of all racial backgrounds and ethnicities because, at the end of the day, the only color that should matter to a business is green. I will not be going back.
Our instructor was not friendly, but the horse back riding was amazing. My horse was Becky and she was so nice and calm. I took the trail ride and the best part was when we were at the beach. This trail ride was 45 minutes but it felt like 10. If this place was near me I would come more often. Definitely worth the $70.
My 8 year old daughter has been taking weekly riding lessons for the last 5 months and she loves it. There are lots of horses there so we were able to get lessons without a problem, and she is learning a ton. Her coach, Jake, is really great with kids and shes looks forward to her lessons every week. Highly recommend!
I had an excellent experience at this establishment. Having never ridden a horse before needless to say I was quite nervous. The staff offered the reassurance I needed to be brave enough to carry on. They have clear cut instructions and explained exactly what waa going to happen along the way. The guide was great. She even took pictures of myself and my companion.
This was definitely worth the money. It was my first time on a horse and I was mad scared but the horses are well trained and its not as horrible as I imagined. The whole trip is about enjoying nature and the best part was going down by the beach side on a hot sunny day and having the cool breeze hit you while youre on a horse.
I am not really the best rider. I have rode horses before, however. They have a wide range of horses, and know how to pick the right horse for you. The instructors are also really knowledgeable, and the trail ride is gorgeous, with a beach ride option. Definitely recommend, it will be a great experience.
We were here after like 2-3 years, it’s not cool. There were rude people, and when we were riding the horse, my sister’s horse tried running away 5 times, while she was controlling it correctly, & another horse kept eating and staying behind. But, the only rude thing was, there was this guy, at the end, he was telling us how to come off, but unfortunately, my sister fell off. And, he left while laughing at her. And, he isn’t explaining well, “Just swing across and jump off.” They didn’t even take us to the block with the stairs unless we asked after a few people came off. So immature. Overall, the only things we disliked was the personality in the people and the type of horses.
My daughters have been taking lessons at Jamaica Bay Riding Academy for about two years and they love this place. Everyone there is very professional and dedicated. They are all excellent instructors who care for each individual. My daughters also joined their summer camp program in past years and they enjoyed every minute of it. I truly recommend this place.JM
I’ve been to JBRA to do the horse riding trail twice now; 4 stars is an average rating for those experiences. The trail is wonderful. It’s truly beautiful to ride between the trees and especially through the beach.Much of the experience is colored by who the guide is. I’ve had a really nice one, who spoke and explained riding, the horses, and the trail thoroughly and we enjoyed that ride immensely. (5 stars)The next time I went, though, I received no instruction or explanation. The guide was quiet the entire time, not telling us how to ride the horse, get it to run, etc. instead she was on her smartphone almost the entire time and seemed annoyed when we asked to speed up or slow down. The trail, as I mentioned above, is beautiful and so the experience was still mostly nice. (3 stars)I definitely recommend going, but ask for a friendly, competent guide.
Great place! After looking through all the horseback riding places in or near NYC we chose Jamaica Bay Riding Academy, and were so glad we did. Due to the different levels of experience between myself and my girlfriend we ended up booking a private beach lesson with Ellen. Between riding the trails along the beautiful beach and Ellens awesome personality/training we had a blast! We will definitely be going back!
This was my first visit here and I will definitely return again. Everyone was very kind and friendly, horses are well taken care of. And the trail ride was just amazing. It will make you forget that you are in New York! As an experienced rider I was given a horse which likes to go forward, so it was definitely fun. They have horses for riders on all levels. I would highly recommend this place also for families with kids.
Absolutely amazing place. Made a surprise birthday ride for my better half, very romantic and relaxing. For me it was a first time riding and I highly recommend for anyone to go, Im not so great with names, but the guide was very professional, explained to us horses personality and guided us step by step how to ride(all my fears went away).Staff was very professional (made us feel very comfortable), ride overall was about an hour (trail and the beach),good pricing too, no need to make reservation (its always good to call ahead check with business if they are doing trail rides).Thank you Jamaica Bay for your welcoming hospitality :)
Lovely venue, at least one great horse - Jubilee - one great indoor arena - and a dedicated skilled instructor, Ellen. I have MS, and need help to get on the horse. They got me on, giving me just as much help as I needed and no more. Ellen gave great instructions, and just enough of a work out so that I recovered by the next day. The prices are super reasonable. I will be back to check out the trail in adjacent Gateway National Recreation Area - theres a shoreline, and to have an egg sandwich as I saw one instructor having in the socially distant cafe. I appreciated the precautions they took to prevent spread of Covid-19. Everyone wore a mask in the office area, and no more than 3 allowed in the restrooms at a time. Thank god for businesses like this offering the joy of riding horseback to people who dont keep their own horses.
Brandon who works in the trail is the worse ever. He screams at customers and even said Jeez. Did we owe you money or what. We came here to have fun but all we got was his grumpy angers. And he’s not professional at all with poor service. He even stopped you talking. So rude. What a manner. Other staffs are nice except him.
I used to come here as a kid with my father to ride horses. This family owned stable is the last great place left to ride horses in New York City. The trails are well maintained and its always fun to ride along the beach.I have been coming here over 30 years and always have enjoyable experiences here.It is impressive how clean the barn area is, which shows that the owners and staff care about the horses. The staff is always courteous and friendly and helpful in finding the right horse based on the riders experience.I encourage anyone who is interested in riding to check this place out.
The instructor was kind and welcoming, but the other staff were highly bitter. I wasnt even acknowledged by those assisting me off of the horse. I thanked them and spoke very kindly to them and they didnt even feel the need to reciprocate the same kindness. Very unpleasing attitudes from the majority of the staff.
Came here for a group ride with my girlfriend, we were the only ones, so we got a private ride for the same price. Our guide was great, he knew the horses well and took us out to the beach on the bay. Afterward we got a tour of the stable. There is a grill and snack bar in case you are peckish after your ride. The views are great, its no wonder they do so many photoshoots here. Well worth the price.
I love this place so much! Amazing people, Im in love with the horses!! This is a big place with many horses! Beautiful area, amazing for practicing and getting more experienced! They let you ride at your pace, and Ive improved so much in just 3 lessons! Best place in town, definitely recommended! Natalie is an amazing instructor!!
The trail ride was excellent. We did the private guided tour (highly recommend you do this) with just the two of us. We had the fortune of riding along the beach during low tide, which allowed us to go further down along the water. Our guide, Cassandra was fantastic and very friendly!I was originally hesitant to go because of the negative reviews, but our experience was completely the opposite of what the negative reviews said. The horses were well behaved and clean, and the staff was very friendly and professional. Will definitely go back.
Nice trail ride. Although the weather and season are currently not the best, I can imagine it would be very beautiful in Spring.I would give a 4 star if not for the private lesson instructor Mariam. She was very impatient and rude during the lesson. I had to stop during the lesson to explicitly tell her that I do not appreciate her tone.Beside Mariam, all the other staff I interacted with seem to be friendly and professional ( including all the other instructors sharing the arena during my lesson).
I would recommend this place for the novelty of the experience and the views. The staff and overall service was so-so.The drive here was a little convoluted given that you can only access the place from the east-bound Belt Parkway. I didnt see any notes about this on the website and interestingly, Google Maps didnt catch it either. Once we arrived, we checked in and had to wait almost 45mins for the next tour. I felt the staff could have been more transparent about the wait process. The waiting area had a food counter and views onto the training area for young riders. When our group was called, we were sent outside the stables to mount the horses. The staff could have given more guidelines about safety and allowed some practice time on the horse. The tour lasted about an hour and was very scenic. You went through woods, scrubs, and tall grasses, before coming to the beach at Jamaica Bay. The views you got to JFK and the city were really nice. The guides didnt say a word to us the entire time other than stopping for some of the slower riders to catch up.
A very slow 45 minute ride (Not worth the money) on the phone the guy said $70 per person, the lady charged me $80 per person (because I used a debit card). Customer service sucks & unfriendly staff. There’s no instructions, nor where we going or what to expect. You don’t feel like your experience matters I don’t see myself going back.
Im not sure how many places you can go horseback riding on a beach in the middle of 500 acres of beautifully preserved National Parkland, with a view of the Manhattan skyline as part of the package... but if that doesnt get five stars, I dont know what does. The restaurant isnt too bad either.
We came here for the trail ride and it was beautiful but a total rip off. Paid $75 per person for what was supposed to be a 50 minute ride, it was more like 30. Our guide was not very friendly and luckily we had been riding before but they didn’t offer much instruction or help. It was a fine experience other than that but not worth the money.
What is not to love about Jamaica Bay Riding Academy? Friendly, experienced staff, a beautiful location, and horses! Chose to take a private ride, and I dont regret it! There is nothing like riding a horse along the beach, and along beautiful trails! I highly recommend it for anyone looking to enjoy a great horseback ride! They also offer lessons for those who want to take their experience a step further. Amazing. Will definitely do it again.
My boyfriend and I came here today to celebrate our 9 year anniversary. This was my first time ever riding a horse, or even petting one and before we got started, I was pretty nervous. Our guide was Rob, who was extremely nice, professional and in control of the horses the entire tour. He made us laugh our whole tour, which really put me ease and took me from being scared, to being incredibly confident and comfortable on my horse. He did take us jogging a bit with the horse and at one point, he noticed I was not too comfortable with it so we walked the rest of the way, which I really appreciated. He even gave us a small tour of the stables after our ride. Its a bit of a splurge for us but I think its worth the price - especially when you have somewhere like this located in brooklyn, of all places, and horse riding is not really an accessible thing to do in cities. Everyone was super nice and they even let us start late since we were waiting for rain to pass. The food there is good too and we definitely will be coming back and recommending to our friends.
Trail guide was very experienced, really took the time to calm us down. we were inexperienced riders and I felt they were very aware of our ability and took the time to make us feel comfortable on the horses. Only complaint is they made us wait about 45 minutes until our ride began.
I think it would have been very easy just to tell the Riders to wear glasses or some sort of protective gear on our eyes. Thankfully I had the mask to cover my mouth from all the dirt dust from the trail the whole time. I wish I wore my sunglasses because at one point I had to bring my head down because I couldnt even take more of the Dust getting into my eyes. I didnt enjoy the ride not even for a minute. Very disappointed. $160 for my daughter and I. All I did was wait for it to end.
As a first time horse rider, paying 130$ for 2 people for private ride.. I was expecting more and better service.. these people will totally rip you off.. first ask you if you are paying cash $110 or cc $130 and they dont tell you why? Definitely not tax.. we ended up doing 40 min ride, 3 min next to the shore.. the horses need to be cleaned.. after they ride, they will follow you to the door to pay them tip even if you dont enjoy the experience..
My good friend Ray and I discovered this place over two weeks ago, and weve been coming back every Sunday ever since! Great little spot off Jamaica Bay with good service, friendly guides/trainers, and great views of the water. The horses are beautiful and the stables well maintained - definitely a great place for equestrians and riding enthusiasts alike! Ill definitely be looking to get certified by the end of the year.
My sister and I have been riding for years and we wanted to take my 9 year old niece for a ride. We came for a private ride at Jamaica Bay. It was exactly what we were looking for. The trails were beautiful and our guide Jessica was very sweet. We rode the horses through the woods and along the beach. We had a great time.
I dont have much experience with horse riding academies, but I found it rediculus. I paid $25 for what? My daughter rode a horse for literally 5 minutes with the person who was walking the horse. Really??? This is my second time being here. First time I paid $15 for 15 minutes, and at that time they had option to have a person who is walking with your child for additional $10. However, it was 15 minutes, not 5?! The horses look so poor that I feel bad for them. Will never come back!!!
At first I began with a trail ride which was about a year ago and this was my first time, let me tell you when I got on I knew that this was a big animal and could most likely crush me but I was calm and the horse was calm as well. I had cody and he was SO obedient, the horse my dad had threw him off but we were the first trail ride of the day and there was a lot of snow, at the end of the day theyre animals AND they also got feelings. Just how we dont like to wake up early, they dont either. So this was understandable, then regarding to how people think that the guides dont talk to them is out of proportion because when my family and I went the guy wasnt talking to us because he was being aware of his speed so our horses would follow but also so we could enjoy the view. He made conversation with us when my sister and I had spoken to him. Now this year I had signed up for classes and theyre amazing. My instructor is Ellen and shes a doll. She really cares for the horses and knows how they are. The trail rides and Classes are amazing. I love JBRA
I had a great experience with every process. Alicia was a very personable guide and answered all my questions. Those complaining about price have no idea what it cost to maintain a horse. I actually thought the rates were great considering everything in the city is expensive. Thank You JBRC!
As a first time horse rider I would have expected much better service. We had a group of 16 which were split into 2. The was a great Idea this way we could have a longer walk on the horses. I was given instruction to get on to a horse. As soon as I sat down the horse started to walk very quickly. My natural was to scream because I had no idea what was going on. The employees all acted as if I had did something completely wrong. They said I was acting nervous and would up set the horse he knows his job. I was very confused. No one elses horse just started to walk with out anyone controlling it. But I made it my business to keep a open mind. About two minutes into the ride my horse started to move her head in a vigorous motion as if it were trying to get the piece of of its mouth. I was very uneasy and explained this to the instructor. She stated everything was fine. Still trying to keep calm I listened and tried to get as comfortable as possible. The horse started to move its head more and more and to the point where I left like it was going to pull me off. I explain this to the instructor telling her the horse was bugging out and I was very uncomfortable. She replied with its an animal. A little upset I continued to keep my calm; until things got crazy. My horse just started to run and slammed me into some bushes. Tears began to fall from my eye and I began to scream in fear. The instructor made it her business to yell at me not to scream because it was making the animal nervous. At this point I was more than angry. With tears running from my face and my friends trying to make me feel better. There was never even the question of are you okay? There was no concern for my well being or even if I needed a tissue. The instructor horse started to jump and walk sideways and she could barley control it. I will never again use these people. They didnt even care when we complained.
I hate to say my daughter and I had a horrible experience here. If it werent for the unprofessionalism of some of the trainers and volunteers that work there, I would have at least given this place a 3 out of 5. Dont bother wasting your money If your looking to actually improve your riding skills. One of the workers had the opacity to ask us to give the trainers a tip! I could not believe what I was experiencing here. Gabi was our instructor and was completely rude along with her volunteer associate. I am personally not one to take a reviews word for anything so If you must come here do yourself a favor and ask for the trainers on their website or I promise you, you would be wasting your time and way too much money with rude young equestrian trainers who give dirty looks to customers and talk a lot of crap. They wont even give your child a chance to tack or learn any of the basics. As a parent I am very disappointed in the unprofessionalism of the trainers who play a huge role in an equestrian facility. This academy could have done a better job with hiring more professional trainers being that they are overpriced. Instead they hire o b cheap rude nyc volunteers to do the job. I would not recommend this place to anyone!
Exceptional service!!!. Great staff, beautiful horses. Emma our tour guide was very informative and helpful on our tour in jamaica bay today. Thank you for everything you did for us today. I definitely recommend Jamaica Bay Riding Academy to all those interested in horses.
Breathtaking, my fiancé and I rode a horse in raw nature. We utilized trails associated with Gateway National Recreation Area (protected land); with that being said, I didnt even feel like I was in the concrete jungle, New York City. The staff at Jamaica Bay Riding Academy, were friendly, professional, and on time. If you want to have a mind blowing experience with a one of a kind view, book your appointment with JBRA. You will NOT be disappointed. We rode on Zippy, and Juicy who were well cared for and well behaved.
If you like horseback riding then this is your place, (if you think you dont like horseback riding then give this place a try too, it might change your mind) the trail takes you on a private beach area and you will forget that you are in the city! Definitely recommended (older kids can ride alone) family place
I would say fairly well place to horse-ride on a weekend when you are all worked up and looking to chill. The trainers are super friendly. Gives calm and peace as it is away from the hustle and bustle of the New York city. But the way to get there is a bit strenuous if you do not have a private vehicle!
Nice views during the ride. Ride was shorter than promised. Took my wife and her grandmother. Staff put me on the horse grandmother wanted and that turned out to be a blessing. At the end of the ride my horse dropped down to lay on rhe ground and rhen ROLLED OVER ON HIS BACK! I was able to jump off when i felt him starting to roll but had grandma been on that horse there was no way she would have gotten off in time and woukd have been crushed. I would have let it pass but the guide we were with showed little concern. She told another employee but never even looked at me let alone asked if I was ok. Other than those 2 issues the ride was nice and it is more exspensive than it should be on a per rider basis
Had friends visiting New York for the first time and a we wanted to do something fun, different, and adventurous, so we decided to make our way out to Jamaica Bay Riding Academy. We took a trail ride through the woods and to the beach!! It was AMAZING!!!! Couldnt have asked for a better day!
The only thing this place has going for it is its spectacular views of Jamaica Bay and of the Manhattan skyline. The place is old and run down and not very easy to get to. If coming from the west bound Belt you have to go a few miles past get off the Belt than come back heading east bound. The guides are snotty teenagers that think they are doing you a favor taking you around. They are being paid and at nearly $40 a person they should be a bit more friendly.
Would give no stars if I could. I rode here for years, horses are mistreated and worked into the ground. The owners dont care about the safety of the customers or their horses but they get away with it because theyre the only game in town. Take your business elsewhere.
My experience was terrible. I had a 4 pm lesson and have ridden horses before but am still a novice. They paired me with a horse that was tired and stubborn. He refused to move despite repeated, repeated attempts at squeezing and kicking him. I kept getting told by my trainer to kick him harder, kick him harder after the fourth stop by the horse, and like 12 attempts, I said get me off this horse and quit my lesson early. Even before I got on the horse there was discussion about him being stubborn and the other horses were taken. Then it was well by 4 pm they are tired. So why do you have lessons at 4? Then it was he had an injured leg. Why would you give a stubborn horse to a new learner? A waste of my time and $110.

2022-03-28The overall experience is incredible. Horses are well maintained, the little guidance was clear and the trail, which we took on the horses was one of its kind, going through bushes, little beach by the bay and little swaps. The location is incredible.Im giving only two stars because of stuff attitude. No interest in people and long waiting time without being transparent. (was told to wait up to 15 minutes, in the end it was almost 45min).As a person without experience but with huge passion to animals I was not instructed or encouraged to feel confident riding a horse. Not sure if its worth the money to be back at this location. Also, the facility is little bit old, not renovated.Big plus for location! :)

2021-08-31This is an amazing place! Jake is my favorite instructor. I got the ten package and Ive been going there every weekend. Im already trotting on ground poles. For starter students, Romeo is a great horse. He barely needs anyone to guide his reigns. He just guides the student. Snowflake is my favorite horse. Hes the one in the pictures. Snowflake is a tougher horse, but great once you show him that youre in charge.

2020-07-03My husband surprised me today with this experience and it was amazing!! I’ve ALWAYS loved horses but had never ridden a real horse on my own. (Other than guided pony rides when I was little lol).Being that this was the first experience for all of us (my husband, my daughters ages 9 & 11 and myself), I honestly was not too nervous. Our guide, Brandon, was very nice and introduced us to the horses and assured us that they already knew what to do. There was also another guide that stayed in the back to watch and make sure that everything went well (I apologize I don’t recall her name but she was also very nice.)The ride was about 45 minutes and was really beautiful. Like other reviewers have said, you start to forget that you’re in NY especially when you get by the water. My younger daughter was nervous at first but was loving it by the end. I’d say it’s well worth the price of $70 a rider (when paying cash) and don’t forget to tip your guide! Will definitely come back again! :)

2020-07-20Fun experience and really nice view. The horses were easy to control, so no problem even if you have no experience. $70 for 45 minutes. There’s a lot of sand and dust so make sure to wear sunglasses and a mask. Wish we had more time to take some pictures with the horses though.
