I love this place. There are always fantastic events to go to here, and they offer language courses as well. Courses are offered in all possible levels for the Japanese language, so thats really great. Additionally, the people who work there are really nice. Talking to them will make you want to buy a membership, haha! I highly recommend going here and checking out some of their events and taking a few brochures on programs they offer.
While the exhibition itself wasnt very good. The place is nice and can be easily navigated through. Even in the winter when most people keep their coats on, you can walk around comfortably. Good acoustics as well.
Wonderful exhibition of incredible craftsmanship in the construction of traditional Japanese homes.
We love it here. We have been attending events here for just about 12 years--Ive just before our older daughter, Kata, was born. Haruna has done an excellent job of speaking Japanese to both of our girls--and, as a result, they are bilingual. They attend a Japanese Saturday school in the City, where they learn numerous aspects of the language and culture. The Japan Society--with their numerous wonderful events--is an excellent augmentation to this process of helping our children better understand their Japanese selves!
I think the Japan Society has a lot of unique things to offer for people in New York City. They have really great events. I love going to the discussions they usually have and it is a great place to meet people and network. Usually these events have Japanese food at the end, which is also very delicious. I have been to about 3-4 events hosted by them while I was working at the United Nations. They do treat students well and give good rates (free times) for interns at the United Nations

March 3 is Girls Day on Japan. There was a wonderful program for children today.
My boyfriend and I saw the US Premiere of the live action Bleach! Had a great time and the movie was very good. Also, had the pleasure of hearing from the director himself, Shinsuke Sato, before the movie started. Cant wait to go back to see the exhibits when they open this fall at Japan Society!

🇯🇵🗾📚🎌The Japan Society is a great cultural institution in NYC, sharing Japanese culture and heritage. I take classes at the Society. It’s close to the UN. Great facilities and friendly staff and professors. I’ve taken 2 classes at the Society and I always have so much fun in class. The price for the classes are quite reasonable as well. I definitely recommend to anyone in NYC who wants to learn or improve their Japanese.

First time here and came specifically to check out the special exhibition on Tokyo architecture and urbanism in the last 50 years. Im sure New Yorkers who are used to making the most of their limited urban space would relate and find the exhibition interesting and even inspiring. We stayed for an hour.As expected, the space has that zen vibe that is so calming and inviting. Looking forward to attending an event or film showing here on our next visit.
A friend invited me to a movie showing and I took in the art exhibit as well. Larger space than I thought it would be. 面白くて楽かったです。
Great spot offering a lot of different ways to enjoy Japanese culture. They just finished Japan Cuts film festival which was a LOT of movies over a short span. Really enjoyed the ones I picked. The downside is the limited availability so if you really want a friend to go see something they have to wait for regular release. I do take Japanese classes here once a week and for what they offer its affordable. Plus they have several other events with receptions following many times. If you are curious about Japan or just want to learn more this is the place.
This place of all things Japanese is a high brow cultural place. The serene entry and the auditorium below welcomes from the start. I’ve been to several events which usually sell out quickly. The events are well organized and lectures are always interesting.The prices for the events are reasonable and certainly a good date night.
They have many events which are all authentic. It is like taking a trip to Japan.They also have Japanese language classes. Children’s activities where you will learn how to make Japanese art.There business symposiums, art exhibits and Japanese movies to in their beautiful theater.

Fantastic hidden museum I happen to find. They have one rotating exhibit related to something fascinating to Japanese culture. When I went they were exploring gender and sexuality in 17-18th century Japanese culture through the use of various wood prints and other art pieces of the time.
This place is so cool and beautiful! There is a bamboo water garden in the middle of it, and really well curated art exhibits. Additionally, its worth it to go here just for the Japanese bidet toilet seats. Such a fun find in nyc!
Always enjoy the yearly Japanese Film Festival. It runs immediately after the NY Asian Film Festival, usually at the end of July. Have seen a number of Japanese films there over the years. The theater is medium sized and comfortable. They also sell Japanese snacks during the festival. There are many cultural events, artist shows and more done here during the rest of the year.

The space itself is minimalist yet beautiful, especially with the waterfall and open garden space in the main lobby. The quality of your visit will really depend on the exhibit but I would suggest going when there are special events as the general exhibit area is on the smaller side.
Love this place, have been a member for years. They organize interesting events, including Sake and Beer tasting, movies and shows, everything related to Japan. I also love its landmark building .

Saw the original Godzilla about a month ago and found the venue to be elegantly decorated with beautiful Japanese culture from bonsai to sculpture. The staff is super nice and welcoming. Didnt get a chance to experience all thats going on at JS that evening. Am planning to return to focus on other things JS has to offer!

I have been attending japanese classes for 4 years now and I am always happy to go to Japan Society. Its cheap, fun and the staff is very friendly. Their exhibitions are often very good as well, as is their cinema festival.
The people working there are so nice !! As you enter the location the presence of you being in new york fades away and the Japanese culture slow wraps your body with great shows and art . simply amazing place to visit and to learn there!!! Good luck travelers cause this place will pack a punch!
One of the best places to visit in New York if you are into Japanese culture: the variety of the programs is quite nice so you can find an interesting event no matter what age you are 5 or 105 ... don’t forget to try out a free Japanese Language class
Japan Societys Language Center is great! Ive been taking Japanese classes the past year. They also have different activities such as Sake tasting, screening of popular/new japanese film, galleries, and more.
Beautiful galleries, great events, and helpful staff. If youre a Japan lover like me, or just someone interested in Japan, or just need something to do with an afternoon, this is the place for you.
Attended several events here. A wonderful staff and great space for lectures and learning. I highly recommend this is a destination to be checked out, the events calendar is always full!
For those with an interest in Japanese culture and art membership is a must, though the museum and the talks and demonstrations are open to non members. A very attractive building.
They put on a free mixer where they offered yuzu sake, a koto performance, and access to an art exhibit. Very cool stuff and I love the mission of their organization—to bring together Americans and Japanese people.
A wonderful place to get away from the hustle and bustle of New York. The gallery is always interesting and they have such a wonderful mix of programs, films, language classes, and more.
Small exhibitions, and an active cinema program are two of the Societys fortes, though they have an active educational program as well. A little off the beaten track, but always glad to have visited, particularly if there is a special program on.
Attended a panel on 2020 Global Risks Landscape tonight. Great speakers, phenomenal host and wonderful facilities. Highly recommend.
A urban sanctuary for art lovers. Well curated exhibitions are top class yet never clouded. The architecture is beautiful too.
The tickets for the event was average . The location is beautiful and relaxing not a loud place . The location is located near many bars around and it might be hard to find parking near by without getting charged .
I attended a private industry related event and was very impressed with the facility. Richard Branson Skyped in to speak to the attendees which was amazing! This is a great facilty for any event that utilizes technology, especially for communications. Very modern design!
I did a crash course in Japanese here and got great results from the course. Its a very difficult language to learn but in only 4 days i was able to form a basic conversation useful for visiting Japan as a tourist.
Classes for learning Japanese are great. There are always interesting events going on and a gallery to lose some time to. Not a bad way to spend an evening.
Took an intensive weekend language course here. Would recommend their language classes, the teacher (Ms. Nakanishi) was awesome, and the materials were the right level of difficulty and pace.
I took Japanese language lessons here, very helpful instructors, nice staff. Various events go on here as well, different films from varying eras being shown, other events as well.
Ive been here on a few occasions. Ive enjoyed a food lecture with Iron Chef Morimoto and a movie screening of Aliens vs. Ninjas. The space is nice and elegantly decorated.
I feel like I am back in Japan every time I go here. They have so many fine Japanese exhibits here. I especially like exhibits on the history of ancient Tokyo.I highly recommend this place.

Clean and friendly except for the security guard. Before anyone had IDs he stopped me amongst everyone else. Why wouldnt I be a student there.... Anyways... Besides that, everything was nice.
Interesting place, as a Japanese culture lover It will be grear to have opportunity to see more of what is Japanese society in NYC... but it seems that visitors are not allowed to come in all areas
If learning to speak Japanese or more about their culture is on your bucket list then this is a highly recommend destination. The instructors are supportive and inspiring.
Very disappointed in the Film Program. I called to locate some resources and was told they only have screenings of movies and their archives are not public. This is not a good resource if you are a filmmaker attempting to do a Japanese film.

Say Konnichiwa to Japan Society if you have yet to acquaint yourself. Without a permanent collection on display, the gallery on the second floor is a revolving door of new and exciting exhibitions on Japanese art and culture. After you visit the gallery, make like the Japanese and zen out in the indoor garden and reflecting pool.

The Japan Society always has interesting and thoughtful exhibits. Its off the beaten path for a museum experience (and location) but well worth it.

2022-04-05My family had a great visit to the museum, it was truly fun for all ages. We visited for my husbands birthday with two little kids, my husband and I plus our parents. The staff was incredibly patient with our kids and offered to take pics in every room. The 2nd room with the interactive moon was definitely the highlight, my kids could of stayed in there all day. We were there for about and hour in total.

2022-05-10Went for a lecture on Designing Minfulness through Japanese Architecture. Was quite amazing from beginning to end. Very interesting speakers and equally beautiful environment on the inside. Should definitely check it out if you are interested in Japanese culture and architecture.

2022-05-04Finally had a chance to visit this place while in NYC, Ive been following their language center online and was really pleased by the gallery they have. Hopefully, my next visit will be post-COVID and things will be back to more in-person events.
