Amazing, hole in the wall Jazz record store in a low key building, if you didnt know it was there youd pass right by it. Had everything from classics like Armstrong to rare Uk hard bop jazz, first record store Ive seen a Phil Seamen lp in. Ill be back to this place for sure, prices were also very reasonable and the cashiers were helpful and pleasent! Love it!
Owner was snarky and rude as others have commented. He doesn’t seem to want the business. Selection really wasn’t great. Prices on most things were on the high side, but it is NYC so I get it. Not worth the effort to get to the place. Left feeling disappointed with nothing net-new to add to the collection. Hyped up by others, but didn’t live up to it for me. Just my assessment. Some better places in Lower Manhattan and a few over in Brooklyn (IMO).
I recently sold my jazz record collection to the Jazz Record Center. Fred, the proprietor, is one of the most pleasant, accommodating and reasonable people Ive ever worked with. He was honest and transparent in his appraisal and paid a bit more than I expected. As a customer, Ive also visited the jazz record center at it is a wonderland for collectors of LPs, CDs, and books.
I and three other eager patrons stood outside the entrance to the building today (August 25, 2022) at 5pm hoping to gain entry to the Jazz Record Center. No one answered the phone at the store, no one responded to the buzzes we repeatedly employed in an effort to get someone to lus let come up to visit the store. The security guard wouldn’t talk to us other than to growl “YOU CAN’T COME IN HERE!”We were all from out of town and had made the trip to West 26 St. in the hope that we could enjoy shopping at this wonderful jazz Mecca. Please leave some sort of notice when you will not be keeping normal store hours. To not do so is terribly rude to your loyal customers.
They have an impressive assortment. The business is not visible from the street since it is in an office building. The place is very well organized and one could spend the day using everything since there is a lot of material. At the same time, there is a variety of books, magazines and jazz information that should be reviewed if one plans to go to listen to music at a club or to understand what is happening nowadays. For jazz lovers it is a must.
I visited for the first time in 2002 when my 2nd trip to NY came. There is this jazz (record) specialty shop in a certain building about 5 minutes on foot from the 23rd St & 7th Av underground line for access. It is surely that it was the dimension that the lock of the door was unlocked and it entered into the store at last finished when raising to 8 F with elevator after telling the owner of the shopkeeper on the intercom installed in the building.Even from the characteristics of the products we are dealing with, we do not need cold customers, and it seems that we are taking care of security since we will also have expensive collectors items inside. However, in January 2002 when I visited the second time, there were water leaks, so analog stock was quietly decreasing and I could not smile to laugh. Since I was collecting Miles goodies at the time, I have regrettably disposed of it, but I have a memory that I bought a small price for a poster ($ 22 for Apples promotion) and $ 40 photo collection.Haruki Murakamis 18th announcement of the short story Charlie Parker Plays Bossa Nova is set in NYs second-hand record shop, but every time I read it, I remember everything about the Jazz Record Center and its coming up nostalgia.

2022-07-05THIS PLACE IS A JAZZ LOVER’S DREAM. Extensive selection of jazz, even contemporary jazz / nu jazz — the records are well organised and decently priced. If you love jazz, you *will* find a record or 5 to take home with you. Will definitely be back!

2022-04-16Amazing selection of vinyl as well CDs, videos & other media. I expected premium prices but everything was very reasonable. Very New York experience, other than the reasonable prices.

2022-06-16I have always enjoyed every single stop at the Jazz Record Center. Always come out with great, used vinyl records at reasonable prices. The book selection is wonderful, too. A must-stop for the Jazz fan when in Manhattan, for sure.

2022-06-17A good selection, well documented laid out shop.However. No listening or testing available. 2 records @$30 I bought were unplayable due to an odd warp, another had skipping issues in several places. These are evidently not tested b4 putting on the shop floor. So its a buyer beware/risk if your not from NYC and cant bring them back for a refund.

2020-03-08Great selection of jazz music in LP and CDs. More wax than plastic. New and used stock. More used than new. Pretty good prices too. There is no store front. You have buzz in from the street of catch the door when someone is leaving the building. It’s an elevator ride up. Friendly-ish staff. A bit annoyed at my request for a particular item, but he did help.

2022-02-09I had a fantastic time here a couple weekends ago. Ken was working, and I recognized him from his youtube channel. I picked out an armload of records, and he helped me sort through them. Many he knew, and he commented on the recording, the session, the personnel, the label, the pressing. I learned a ton, and with his guidance I narrowed it down to a more-manageable stack. For the pricier ones, he offered to play them for me. We put on a couple, they all sounded great. I gave them all a good listen back home, and there wasnt a dud among them. Ill definitely be making this place a regular stop on my trips to the city.

2021-04-16This record store is a wonderful store. They have a huge Jazz collection for sale of vinyl, cds and many other related things. I loved browsing through the very organized sections of each artist there and I would recommend this place to anyone looking for jazz related albums. The staff there is also very polite and helpful and made me feel comfortable and welcome while I was browsing through the sections. I definitely look forward to returning there when I am able to and I would recommend anyone thinking about visiting here to give it a try.

2020-02-04This shop is a jazz album and memorabilia destination. Took about 45 mins to browse their selection of used and new Jazz LPs, and had some good finds. All high quality stuff in the $20-and-up range. Good music playing, felt far from the bustle of the city below, made for a relaxing time. It’s on the 8th floor. Glad I took the time!
