I was looking forward to dining here after all the good reviews but was extremely disappointed. Upon entry my guest and I were not greeted and merely pointed to an open seat. We ordered a bottle of wine and the waiter just dropped it on the table, no asking if we liked it or even faking wanting to pour any for us - we did ourselves.Tartare was good, salon was decent. Fries were good ( they came aplenty). No checking in with us on our meal, the servers just hung out by themselves chatting… not very well priced either. No thank you for dining on the way out. Mind you the entire time the restaurant had maybe 10 tables sat…Pretty disappointed
Joe Allen is always JOE Allen.Solid fare after the theatre.I love how they make their cocktails. The mixture is stored in salted ice like an ice cream maker so that its served nice and cold....plus your drink isnt diluted. Our waiter from Toronto who has been at Joe Allen for a year was very attentive.
Excellent food and service. Nice ambiance and layout. Very attentive to allergies, and use a fryer that is clear for nut and fish allergens. We enjoyed the wings, ceviche, salads and of course the steak frites. The fries were perfect and the sauce with the steak was very nicely prepared. We will return!
Would have been great, however the maitre d could have made our experience perfect. We were 5 ladies dining for lunch. He refused to let us use a extra chair to put our pocketbooks onThere was plenty of room and a empty table next to us. He offered to check our purses. Who does that!!!! I would NEVER EVER check my purse. Customer service left a lot to be desired. As a retired restaurant owner, I was very disappointedOur server was WONDERFUL. He was spot on!!
Food looked good but thats about it. The wings were the worst wings I have ever had, on top of the not so good taste, theyre $20 for like 6 wings. The celery was pretty good though. Also the signature Joe burger was mid. Honestly why call it a signature burger when its just a regular cheeseburger with some bacon. Lastly the water was awful and the cups were smelly. Overall a real let down for the place.
Everything was average. Average service, average hummus, average salad. None of these things were really bad, but they certainly werent anything more than just barely average. The menu in general was limited and boring. We hoped to save the evening by getting dessert that our waiter assured us was delicious. He recommended the banana cream pie but it was so tasteless we had two bites and left the rest.
I need to speak to the owner. Yesterday the manager behaved unacceptably. We were having the most pleasant experience. Our server was an asian fellow who was wonderful. Unexpectedly, the manager walked over to our table and accused my son of having his phone sound on the while he played a game, but he did not have it on. I was highly insulted by his demeanor and most unprofessional approach. We were spending good money and he singled us out because we were there with my child, on Mother’s Day at that. So because we were the one with a child he assumed that the noise complaint was stemming from our table which is 100% discrimination and he proceeded to not apologize and moreover, cancelled our dinner order and check and asked us to leave, because of his own mistake and lack of professionalism. I will slander your name. You have no idea who you are dealing with.
Turning off the Broadway-show, touristy, crazy 7th Ave onto W46th is like stepping through a portal to the cutest street in NYC. Joe Allen is perfection - cozy, lovely team, delicious food. And I will be eternally grateful to the team for finding my left-behind shopping bag of $$$ shoes and holding for me. You will always be a part of my -pre and -post show plans!!!
Amazingly improved. Usually, in the past, you’d come to Joe Allen for the people-watching. Food was fine. We came back prior to seeing COMPANY, and the food was DELICIOUS. We were besides ourselves. Amazing job, Joe Allen. To rally during this difficult time is a triumph. We’ll be coming back for the food AND the people next time! A Broadway triumph.
We showed up for dinner service with a party of five. Upon arrival we were asked if we had a reservation. When we responded “no” the shocked hostess inquired arrogantly again with “you don’t have a reservation for FIVE people?” We found this hilarious because it was 5:30pm on a Friday and the restaurant was largely empty. We sat down and were handed poorly folded paper menus which were a limited menu. Apparently they didn’t have gas service and were unable to provide various foods at various temperatures as they essentially were cooking off George Forman Gills equivalents. The white paper table covers seriously upped the level of sophistication, providing that homey “Macaroni Grill feel”.When dinner was served, it was interesting. The lobster roll was served on a toasted hot dog roll that was probably picked up from a local chain grocery. When our party of 5 left at about 6:30, the restaurant still didn’t have a wait, and many tables remained open. Although our server was kind and attentive, we can understand from the rest of our experience and the uptight hostess why reservations may not really be required for this lackluster restaurant.
Love Joe Allens!!! Came here after a show on the recommendation of theater staff. Their walls are adorned with posters from every failed Broadway show! There are some great ones I would have loved to see. Took a couple pics with my favs.Ok... Down to the real reason you are reading this... The food. Oh my goodness! We started with the Roasted Cauliflower appetizer with Baba Ganoush, Crispy Chic Peas, and Pomegranate Seeds served with Pita Bread. This was delicious and light. For an entree I ordered the Steak Fritte rare with a Red Wine Reduction that is served on the side. It was incredible. The NY Strip was seasoned and cooked perfectly. The Frittes were obviously cut in house and were crispy and delicious. The Red Wine Reduction was rich and flavorful. I mainly used it to dip the Frittes (screw ketchup Im spoiled now) because the steak was sooo delicious. For dessert I had a dreamy Banana Cream Pie that was so fresh and fabulous. Light and not too sweet whipped cream atop custard and sliced bananas... Yessss.Cant wait to go back!Great for a late night bite. I believe we arrived at 10pm on a Thursday.Thank You Joe Allens for a great Meal and Drinks. You Staff is amazing!💙KPPS- Sorry there is no food pics. I was starving and it was yummy!
I really enjoyed the atmosphere. Hint of Italian with American pub scene at the bar.The servers were wonderful and attentive to our requests. My meal was great. The Vegetarian Thai Stew was really good. The sauce is what made it.The guacamole was good. It was a bit tangy and had more cilantro than Im use to.The 5th star would have come from having lemonade. I imagined a strawberry or another fruit combination, but alas it wasnt so.Another reason for no 5th star, is that the seating was really tight. Granted, it is Midtown Manhattan with many other establishments. In summary, if you have an opportunity to dine here, please do.
Like 99% of other people, we went here prior to a show. And as the other reviews have said, it a warm, cozy place with show poster adorning the walls. Our waiter was very good, attentive without being intrusive. We began with two well executed Manhattans and both had the Steak frites. The steak was cooked perfectly, and while not overly large, was quite flavorful. We finished with a piece of banana cream pie between the two of us.Joe Allens is the perfect before or after dining spot for your theater experience. Well be back.
I always remembered this place as a post theater hangout. We went after seeing Company And it is definitely still all of that. Hardly a seat to be had at 10:15 at night! Unfortunately thats the most exciting thing about the place. The food is barely average. The drinks are okay. The atmosphere - terrific. It feels stuck in the distant past, and while its still well attended, it feels like the generation populating it, is dying out. They better do something to bring in the youngsters, or it may die along with its clientele.
We came here following a show - what else?! 🙂 It was Moulin Rouge which was marvelous and put us in a great mood. Joe Allen did not disappoint. Out waiter was friendly and knowledgeable and the food was so good. The place is cozy as sat near the bar. I definitely recommend it, particularly for post-show late-night fare. You cant go wrong.
I’ve been coming here for 35 years..I’ve always loved the low- key theatre-y atmosphere..the food and drinks are always basic but good...service always good...ate here today,Halloween...service was a little off...waiters needs to clean the table after dinner plates are up. Our dessert, ( of course, Banana Cream pie,!) was placed on a dirty table. Used dinner silverware was not not replaced with fresh forks for dessert ( we took them off another table!) Another problem are the white napkins that “shed” & will cover dark clothing with unremovable lint!!! Joe...get new napkins!
My hubby and I came here for dinner after an amazing Broadway reopening of the lion king! Whatever you do, do NOT order the meatloaf, it’s incredibly bland and the mashed potatoes and spinach tasted like cafeteria food. My husband got the pork tenderloin and it was divine, very flavorful. We loved the vibe of the place, lots of Broadway musical one hit wonders everywhere 😊
Martinis were great but redhead waiter was horrible. Our first time there and wanted a picture of the group and asked him to take a picture he said give him a minute, unfortunately he never returned. We had to constantly ask other servers for water refill, and ketchup. Would go back just for drinks but will definitely make sure he is not our server.
Joe Allens picks and chooses who they serve. What a joke of a business. Turns away customers and money because they want to uphold medical segregation. I believe the owner needs to do some studying on what it means to be a business of public accommodation because he is breaking the law and that has severe consequences
The quintessential Theater District•Restaurant Row•pre- & post-show Drinks•Dining•Dish place to be – with legendary people-watching (primarily late/late & weekend afternoons).Happy to be able to report that, after a distressing stretch – declines in food, drink, service, & even atmosphere (thru a chunk of the oughts + into the teens), they seem back on track.Ive been in, a couple times, already, in 22❗
I imagine for long time New Yorkers Joe Allen is one of those places that feel like a warm snuggly blanket. It’s just the right amount of old school complete with guaranteed celebrity sightings. The food is well executed Americana, nothing special or clever. But nothing memorable either.
Server was extremely short with us and impounded a mandatory 20% gratuity for a party of 5. Service for the pricing is way off, maybe the server was having a bad day because the restaurant was empty. Food was good but not at the prices they charge. I took 1 star off for the service and another for the pricing. My hats go out to the bartender who was awesome, Owen the coat checkers is the best, and the cooks rock.
We went to Joe Allen on a Sunday evening, after Moulin Rouge, for a quick post-theatre supper. We had planned to go to Sardis, but it was closed, so we were pleased to find Joe Allen open. The restaurant was very quiet, but the staff were very friendly and welcoming, and service was excellent. They made the best Dark & Stormy and Espresso Martini that wed ever had. The menu was great, and as we were pretty jet lagged and just wanted a quick snack, one of us had chips and guacamole, which was home made and delicious; one of us had a lovely chicken salad, and one of us had watermelon and feta salad which was delicious and highly recommended. We would definitely go back, but hopefully when there were a few more diners there.
Loved this place! A good spot to see famous actors. The drinks were amazing. Super staff. They are the busiest before all the Broadway shows start, so the later you go, the less busy the place is. The menu has staples they have been serving for decades, favorites like meat loaf and calf liver. There are daily specials which are equally lovely, such as monkfish piccata for example. The appetizers are big enough to share. The baby artichoke app and the steak tartare were both wonderful. The walls of the establishment are lined with posters from failed Broadway shows, which I thought was neat. Definitely a wonderful place to visit.
I my husband took my Father (from England) to Joe Allens Restaurant many years ago, we had a great meal there and really good time. We knew the chef and met Mr. Allen. My father really appreciate the wonderful meal, I cannot remember what we ate it was many years ago.RIP Mr. Allen you were a wonderful man. Prayers for your family.🇺🇸🇬🇧😥😥😥.
Lovely little spot. I haven’t had a comfort dish this good in a long time. The table arrangement is snug but ads to the experience, it made my dinner more romantic. I had the shrimp and grits, my better half had the calf liver, both dishes were amazingly delicious, paired with a bottle of malbec reserva we came out under two hundred for everything, which is awesome for any decent restaurant in the city. If you are in the area and need a solid restaurant for the evening, give this place a shot.
Dont think a thing has changed since I was an itty-bitty kid! Took the next generation for burgers upon arriving in Manhattan for an overnight visit to celebrate Christmastime 2018 in the city. They were as pleased as I used to be with soda in glass bottles, and fresh crusty, hot loaves of bread on the table (with plenty of butter). I found it to still be a fun place, still with white table cloths, and theater posters lining the walls, but a more laid-back vibe then in my memory. The burgers didnt seem as good to me now as an adult; lacked some taste. Overall a nice space, and a spark of originality (plus, tradition) in the theater district that nowadays shares the street with chain restaurants one would find in suburbia. I wish the food had blown me away, but still an above-average visit. It may warrant another visit again someday - who knows!?!
No star. . Never have I been so embarrassed. We had 1 bottle of wine for 3 people. had dinner, and for some reason, they decided to say we could not have another bottle. It was some little fellow named Will who said we were cut off. We have eaten at Joe Allens over the last 25 years several times. NEVER have we been treated with such disrespect.
Low key restaurant with interesting backstory intertwined with the Arts. You could easily miss it from the outside as its down some steep steps, with a rustic atmosphere inside. The food we had was perfect, familiar flavours but with a little twist and finesse. Reasonably priced and a short walk to Broadway and Times Square.
It wasnt half as good as I was anticipating. The staff were really polite the server was a bit slow with drinks but the food came out fairly quickly. We got the guacamole which was delicious but aside from that I wasnt overly impressed with the menu and I guess I felt like if their menu wasnt impressive what was on it shouldve been outstanding (especially considering the price) and it wasnt. The food was just ok it was nothing special in my opinion
Ive been here once before a long time ago, and although Im sure my experience was fine, this time was perfect. My fiance and I were meeting my parents and family friends for dinner before Hamilton, and even though we got there fifteen minutes early for our reservation they seated us at our table right away. Our waiter KC as well as RJ were attentive and personable and just a delight to our experience.
Service was a bit rushed. Main course was OK, but the desert was a disappointment. The crumbled apple pie was a bit too thick and soggy. Whipped cream wasnt an option to add. Instead only ice cream was added and that was very bad ice cream. Obviously refrozen stuff with lots of crystallized water in it. It ruined my dinner experience.
I never write reviews but Joe Allen was GREAT! We went to Joe Allen before the Radio City Christmas Spectacular, we showed up to the restaurant early about 20 minutes before our reservation (I would highly recommend reservations) and the staff was great accommodating us early. The prices were very reasonable especially since it is so close to times square. The meal and dessert were great (I had a burger the person I was with had meatloaf) and we ordered the homemade chocolate chip cookies for dessert. Ill be returning to Joe Allen!
Have been twice in last 6 weeks. Fine service, good food, reasonable, for Manhattan, prices. On one of our visits, kitchen lost our order. Waitress and floor manager were terrific. Apologized, got order on track, offered dessert on house. We will definitely return to joe allen.
Its in the heart of the theatre district. The atmosphere is very old guard ( not a bad thing )I am told it has some history, this is what I love about places like this. I can only imagine famous Broadway types, come to corral together having cocktails and late-night eats.
Ive been there multiple times and each time I go, the food gets more and more delicious! The atmosphere is wonderful and sometimes if you are lucky, you will see Jake Gyllenhaal! Every time i come to the city i beg my parents to take me there. And dont even get me started on the food. Ranging from burgers to steak tartar! I recommend this place!
Love the atmosphere and the food, my favourite NY restaurant. I really like when you call to make a reservation for after seeing a show they ask what you are seeing, know what time it ends, and suggest a time so as you are not rushing. Weve always dined with a famous face or two after shows!
Extremely disappointing. Items on the website menu are not on the limited menu in the actual restaurant. We were told by our server that it was their slow season and that is why the menu was so small. Their website should reflect that, very misleading. Our server was uncooperative and not accommodating. We felt as if we were bothering him. The food was horrible as well. I have to agree with another reviewer regatding the rolls, they did seem like they were purchased at a convenience store. I wish we would have left as soon as we saw the ridiculously limited menu.
My wife and I first visited this restaurant back in November 2008 and it was the first night of our Honeymoon. We had never been to NYC before and were spoilt for choice as to where to eat but after going for a walk in the winter cold we walked along Restaurant Row and decided to try out Joe Allen, On our first visit the place was crowded and with no advance booking we were very lucky to get a table. Fast forward 8 years and we found ourselves back in NYC and for old times sake we decided to go to Joe Allen as we enjoyed it so much last time. We were out a little earlier this time and the place was not as crowded and we easily got a table, but not any old table, we had the exact same table as we had when we visited 8 years previously... coincidence? again, the staff/service and food was top notch, and I would visit this place time and time again
This is a classic restaurant thats great for pre- or post-theater food and drink. It definitely isnt showy, its just a solid place with offerings like burgers and Cobb salad. They tout cocktails like martinis and Singapore slings. Its a bit expensive but in line with the prices in the theater district.
We used to love coming to Joe Allen, but the lat three times we came (all 3 in 2019) the kitchen was serving a very limited menu of microwaved foods, because there was a problem with the gas in the kitchen. Its almost a year and the kitchen gas still wasnt fixed. In my opinion, there is not much point in going to Joe Allen to eat dinner until they have a full working kitchen again, but if you are in the mood for drinks, the bar is nice.
Disappointing experience. We just dropped in early Sunday evening for a drink and light meal. No gin martini with bleu cheese olives. I can find this multiple places in Philadelphia and Pittsburgh. It was treated like a highly unusual request that I shouldnt expect to find. Food was fine but not out of the ordinary. Not to return.
Fantastic food. However, was forced into a 4:30 reservation when I asked for 5:30. Literally we were the only ones there. Just wanted a quick bite and when we left at 5:30, still 80% of the tables were open. I get it, they need the theater crowd accommodated.Friendly staff.
Just went there, after calling to order meat loaf platter to go, having found them on Google and then spoken to them in detail regarding the order -- no sandwich, only full platter available. When I show up, manager looks at me like Im crazy, but then I show him my phone, which proves I called twice. Person on the phone willingly took my order. The manager was at best perfunctorily apologetic.Im a native New Yorker. Thousands of other places to go. Do not reward this place with your business!!!
We have begun visiting Joe Allens time and time again. Each experience has been great! On Mondays, they have a Mexican menu- I would highly recommend the fish tacos or enchiladas! Very accommodating towards pre-theatre dinners, as well as seat you at the table prior to your entire party arriving (which is a rarity in the city)! We will continue to go back!
Went with group of five people after a show, unfriendly waitress and disgracefully skimpy $34 entree of small scallops with a tiny amount of quinoa salad, plate was almost empty...others had meatloaf which was not that great either. Left hungry and $50 lighter. Go someplace else...
Very expensive but that food wasnt that good, it was just okay. We made a reservation for 8 people and they gave us 2 separate tables of 4. They refused to push the tables together! What was the point of making a reservation if we cant sit together? We were seeing family we dont see often so we kept rotating seats so we all had a chance to talk to eachother.
Good food, but ridiculous kitchen rules slightly spoiled the experience for me. I asked to mix up my dish slightly (omelette instead of scrambled eggs) and was given some gumpf about chefs and their stations and not messing up the system.... Makes me believe everything comes in pre made packaging and the chefs are robots. Maybe not.... anyway, once the nonsense was over, decent food, bit overpriced, in a nice setting and friendly if immovable staff. The Welsh Messi indeed.
One of my favorite restaurants in the city. Ive only ever been here for dinner and I always get some of the same things every time I go. The escargot appetizer is a must with the garlicky/buttery pesto that theyre cooked in. I also love the cassoulet and meatloaf, but my ultimate favorite dish is the calfs liver (the first place Ive ever had it). The banana cream pie is to die for as well. The lady that makes it has been there for eons (according to my uncle). This is a great place to grab dinner and a cocktail before heading across the street to see an off broadway/cabaret/old new york style bar.
I was not impressed by this steak restaurant. I felt that the restaurant was very touristy and overpriced. The steak was $33 per person. Everything is a la carte. You have to order sides (potato, vegetable) separately. Each side is around $7. We stopped in here because we had a coupon and the restaurant always gets good reviews. I was completely unimpressed. The service was mediocre.
We frequently visit the Joe Allen in London so a trip to the NYC location was in order. They are similar in decor, so much so that you might forget which one you are in. The service and food met high expectations with my son enjoying the liver and I the scallops. Recommended for a pre- or post-theatre meal.
My family and I have been going here since I was a child (a hella long time) - the early 80s. The atmostphere is perfect for those looking for the Broadway experience, the food is amazing, and the staff are, usually, very nice. ITs a NYC staple and if anything, you should check it out just for that. I cant remember ever having anything that wasnt delicious in over 35 years.
I love Joe Allens for a late night dinner after a show , or concert . The dining areas are intimate and welcoming , the bar well stocked and often crowded. Last time I started with the escargot cooked in shell , garlic and butter , followed by the wonderful meat loaf , better than moms, then a perfect crime brûlée. A City staple Joe Allens .
I simply love Joe Allen. The atmosphere is cozy, the fellow patrons are local and have decades of stories to tell, the wall of Flops - Broadway plays that came on stage with a bang, and quickly left with a whimper is unique and a beautiful touch of fun.The food is nice, homely, tasty - not Michelin star quality mind you, but exactly what you wanted after a play, or after a long day.
This place is very hit or miss. but when it is a hit i wouldnt miss it. pre- theatre bar service snappy and lively, roasted beet and fennel salad with some b&b and a cold gin martini just the perfect light meal to take the edge off before braving the theatre. i cant help myself, i will keep going back here as long as this place is open for business.
One of my NYC favorites , known by the locals for years as one of the best for the money , you can hit them for late night eats after the theater and they have the best meatloaf in the world and I normally dont eat meatloaf but here I do , the escargot was great lots of garlic and butter and the bread is made in house daily
Too predictable, but I assume, many people would like that. Average selection. High prices. Too typical. Too boring. For those who come to catch a play in NYC will probably do for a New York experience like many other places in that area. But I would definitely walk half a block further to the Hell Kitchen area to find something more authentic

2022-02-11We had a wonderful pre-theater dinner here, sitting at the bar which was the best seat in the house! The food was delicious. Ordered the roasted stuffed quail as well as the burger. Great flavor and presentation; friendly staff. Very strong drinks too! Will definitely come back here again.

2022-04-11We stopped in here after a show because everything else was closed on a Sunday night. This has a casual pub feeling with a cool broadway vibe. The service was friendly and very helpful with good recommendations. The drinks were well done and the presentation was thoughtful. The guacamole has a different spin on it but still had a good flavor. The steak and fries were good too. Over all it was a nice experience and had an affordable price point too.

2022-02-11My friends recommended me Joe Allen that it is a place I must visit. I had the pan roasted sole with mashed potato and cesar salad. It was amazing! I highly recommend Joe Allen. It is a perfect place to have a dinner before or after a broadway show. Oh and the service is great too!

2022-03-13What a great place! Highly recommend to everyone, but especially those in the area for a Broadway play. There’s pictures of actors/actresses and Broadway poster, really adds to the whole experience. The eggs Benedict was delightful, and the service was very nice and attentive. Will be back

2022-09-19This venerable dining establishment is my definition of what a perfect restaurant can be. The setting, the food, the bar and the professional wait staff make having a meal here a special evening. Joe Allen has been around for many years and I hope they continue to thrive for many more.

2021-09-10My daughter and I went here before seeing HadesTown. This is our first time to NYC. We both had the New York strip steak for our entree & the hot fudge cake for dessert. The whole meal was wonderful and our waiter was very attentive. The atmosphere is cozy and we loved the posters of Broadway flops on the walls. On our next trip to NYC we will definitely be back to dine at Joe Allen’s!

2022-08-01Positive points: nice and cozy inside, service was great, great for late dine / after Broadway show dinner etc. Bathroom was clean and ok.Negative point: food was for us a bit disappointing in taste. My husband ordered a salad - that was just ok. And I ordered a steak tartare. But it might have been that we ordered the wrong dishes. My tartare was ok in taste but not great, not memorable. the toast/bread that came together was My opinion not the right choice to eat with tartare. It was too hard, too thin, broke easily. It made difficult to eat the tartar. I’d serve it with a bit more bread and real bread. I ordered a dessert, which was not a good choice. Some type of chocolate cake covered with some industrialized chocolate caramel sauce and a vanilla ice cream. I didn’t like it-sorry. I wish they had the famous pecan pie but they didn’t have in the menu, it might be seasonal. It was for us a nice option for after show dine close to our hotel in Hell’s Kitchen.Overall I’d recommend for a after Broadway show. I’d also recommend to book online before. I wouldn’t come just for the gastronomic side.

2022-03-17I have not been to your restaurant for several years. I had an exceptional experience all around. Easy to make reservations, very curtious man making reservations, suggested the proper time after our play had finished and walking time needed for someone with restricted vision!Gave me and my friends a beautiful quiet table and we had the best liver, onions, bacon, mashed potatoes and sauteed spinach that I have EVER had!!Thank You so much! I will be back very soon, such a delightful evening. All of the staff were very friendly and professional! Great ending for a Beautiful Day!Thank You
