Joes Steam Rice Roll in other cities:
I had the shrimp party. Tasty and, by NYC standards, a good deal at $9 pre-tax/tip.Its located within Canal Street Market. I dined indoors. Someone checked my COVID vaccination card to cross into the dining area, and I was happy to see that enforced. The market was mostly empty, which was great for me, though maybe a bummer for the market itself.
We tried the one that’s inside a food hall, but there’s another one around the area too. I got the shrimp rice roll and added corn and egg. I got 3 rolls of rice rolls, which is a lot, and couldn’t even finish it. I will opt out if added corn or egg next time as it didn’t really add any flavor to it. The corn was not sweet either. The chili oil is a must with the dish.
Guess what? Its 345pm and they are long since gone! Wasted trip cause Joes has no respect for posted hours. Seriously, what kind of place just packs up.when they feel like it? Not only that, but their prices have skyrocketed, a plate now costs $12! Stick to Chinatown, many many delish choices for less with great hours too.
I like the idea of the open kitchen and show people the entire procedure. It’s stress-relief moment to watch the guy making rice roll from rice paste so promptly. The rice skin is super thin and it’s my favorite style. However the ground beef chewing like residue of cork. It’s quick bite but may take time to get your order if there’re many people in front you since the rice roll need to be steamed 1-2 mins. I may go for the plain rice roll next time and reserve my favorite beef rice roll to Golden Unicorn.
These are some of the best rice rolls in the city! Been here many times for lunch or quick dinner. The difference between Joe’s and what you’d get at a dim sum spot is that their rice noodle roll is intentionally made a little thinner. It’s baffling seeing other reviews complaining that it isn’t thick enough! Go to your other traditional spots if that’s what you’re looking for.Glad the hype has died down a bit so the line isn’t as long anymore.
I heard about Joes Steam Rice Roll from a YouTube video and I knew it was for me, I was right! We ordered the special rice roll (with pork, beef, and shrimp) and a pork rice roll, it looks like one rice roll won’t fill you up but it is more than enough for lunch!Pick all your own sauces to customise how spicy/saucy you want it, they didn’t have the sauces named, so I had to go through and try a little bit of each one which was annoying. If you can, get a seat at the counter to watch them make the rice rolls!
Tip: Try Joes Signature and their Shrimp Rice Noodle Rolls with all vegetable additions for the full experience.Rice noodle rolls are one of my favorite food and I even went on a quest in Guangdong, China (the birth of rice noodle rolls) to find what was the best the world had to offer.Joes Steam Rice Roll is by far the best rice noodle roll in NYC and it resembles to most rice noodle rolls made in Guangdong, China. The process in which they create such silky texture is similar to how they make it in Guangdong as well. If Joes Steam Rice Roll steps up their meat, shrimp and sauce quality game then Ill be concern that I wouldnt be able to distinguish the difference from NYCs best vs Chinas best. But it doesnt seem fair to knock off any points comparing Joes rice roll to the best ones made in China. Im excited to see that Joes can produce quality rice noodle rolls comparable to the ones in China!
I think my expectations were too high. it was good but Ive had much better. I ordered the Joes signature steam rice roll and curry fish balls. the steam rice roll is made to order so there is a wait time. and the line to order is long especially if you go around lunch time. the fish ball was a disappointment. they were all prepared and in containers. a little soggy with no snap to them. Im glad I tried them. but I would have preferred their other location. I think you can get half orders, this way I can try out different items.
I feel like the quality has gone down just a tiny bit versus the last few visits. I don’t blame them tho, they’re so busy! It’s not gonna stop me from not going tho! LOL. I love their rice rolls so much! I’m a die hard fan and can eat two plates easily. This is the best location for me if I compare it to their other locations. It’s most convenient and easier to access!
I was expecting a lot and although the steam rice rolls were good, I felt that I wanted the rolls to be thicker as Ive had at other places like Shorty Tangs... Maybe Im just partial to it that way. Still, very tasty and choice of fillings are nice. This was the shrimp roll with corn, and the back one was beef. I preferred the Shrimp as the beef was a little pasty in texture.
Ordered shrimp party and had NO shrimp not dry shrimp inside...For $10 and 10 mins wait time, really feels like had an appetizer.. Extremely hungry. Definitely not worth it in Chinatown... Find other restaurants couple blocks away for cheaper and possibly better steam rice.
Wait times are so long! It seems silly when a tiny street cart in Chinatown can produce rice rolls of similar quality in minutes for half the price. Pluses: you can choose toppings like bean sprouts and cilantro, the wrappers are more delicate than you can get at the carts, and the peanut sauce is great. And you don’t have to chase down a cart. But I prefer the cart experience - so cool to see a cart with all the drawers where they make the rice rolls expeditiously! Hurry up, Joe’s. One woman told me she was waiting for 20 min and orders weren’t being filled in order.
I’m obsessed with the rice rolls these days. Cheap and delicious! Love the peanut sauce and staffs are nice. Only a few downsides are waiting time, usually takes about 30min during lunch time, and i hope they use paper(something eco friendly) plates/containers instead of styrofoam/plastic plates.
Unfortunately the quality of the rice rolls aren’t on par with the Flushing location. They come our way too hot and overcooked, and the delicate rice roll skin has no QQ bounce to them. Overall, not too bad if you don’t want to go all the way to Flushing but not quite as good.
Took very long to get my food. Food taste okay nothing special. I use to eat here often but after the pandemic everything is diff. I took one bite and my stomach was hurting bad. I had the shrimp option and I kept telling the cashier I want number 4 the $7 priced one but she kept saying the $9 option even though I repeated the $7. Money hungry if you ask me never again.
My girlfriend and I go to Dim Sum frequently and Shrimp in Noodle and Beef in Noodle are some of my favorite items. Unfortunately, there are many times that I crave those items, but can only get them on weekends during brunch hours when we get Dim Sum. When we heard of Joes Steam Rice Roll, and saw pictures, we had to try it.Joes Steam Rice Roll is located in Canal Street Market food court. The place is really busy, with Joes being one of the popular locations. There was not much of a line to order, mainly between getting the Joes Special (Beef, Dry Shrimp, egg, etc.) or the Shrimp Party (Shrimp, Dry Shrimp, egg, etc.). If you view the picture, we ordered the Joes Special. The size was good enough for the two of us, I wouldnt recommend more than one per person. When we ordered, we were told it would take about half an hour for our order. We were okay with that as we were in no rush, and it came out in about 15 to 20 minutes. The rice roll is definitely a lot more than your typical noodle dish at dim sum. The dish is served on a Styrofoam plate (I wish it were more environmental friendly, but thats just me), already sauced. Theres a station to add more, but I didnt think it was necessary. The roll was very tasty, and you could taste the different tastes and textures of the beef, the dry shrimp, and the eggs.TLDR version: Really good, includes more than the typical Dim Sum Rice Roll, but you have to deal with the business of Canal Street Market Food Court, and possibly have to wait half an hour for your order to be ready.
Its one of the softest, springiest steam rice rolls that ive ever had to eat. it was decent, good, and appetizing. Though there was almost no filling in them. It was hard to justify the price (6 dollars for a beef roll?) and experience for something that you could get at a cheaper price with better fillings at a smaller mom and pop store in chinatown. id recommend spending money to the local chinese restaurants in chinatown, which are suffering, than coming here.
Best rice rolls in Chinatown! Can eat them every day. Hearty and hot comfort food. Service is great! Its always busy during lunch hour, wait can be 15-25 minute but you can see, the cooks always do their best. Cant get enough of these delicious rice noodle rolls!!! Thank you, team!!!
Love the mochi donuts but to be honest I havent tried a drink from here I particularly enjoy. I do wish they brought back the tea flavored mochi donut munchkins. The cream puffs are pretty good but theyre not my favorite. This isnt a place I always want to visit but whenever I pass through Chinatown I cant help but get a donut from here.
This location is still suffering severe growing pains. While the food may be good, I never got to try. The quick snack that is 腸粉 is far from quick at Joes. A simple order makes an efficient meal can take 45+ minutes during peak hours.Recommendations: Dont come during peak hours. Dont come unless you have time to spare, give it an hour to be safe. Go elsewhere in Flushing to get your tasty treats in a reasonable timeframe.
Amazing. Long wait but worth it (no one was physically in line, but it took maybe 25 minutes to get my rice roll). The wait isnt a big deal because you can just walk around the market and peruse the cute shops while waiting.Mesmerizing to watch them make the rolls. The eolls are perfectly chewy - I am salivating at the thought!! Please open a location in LA 😭
We got takeout from this location in the middle of a thunderstorm. it was raining heavily and very windy. when we grabbed our 4 rice rolls, they gave it to us in a paper bag.on the walk home, the paper bag got soaked and ripped. all 4 fell on the ground, 1 was intact, 1 fell out completely on the ground, and 2 busted open in the rain. we brought all 3 dishes back and asked if they would mind remaking it.the staff took away the 3 dishes and threw it in the trash, stating that they would replace them. then, they came back and said the manager would only allow us to get 2 dishes remade.i understand times are tough during covid. but they really botched the communication on this one. they could’ve let us keep the 1 intact dish and replace the busted 2. but they tossed all 3, told us they’d replace all of them, then changed their mind after talking to the manager.i love the food, it’s fast service and high quality. but i’m pretty disappointed with the communication on this. im also really disappointed they didn’t give us a plastic bag and gave us paper bags to carry in the pouring rain.we also tipped them 15% for takeout. and this is how they treated us.would not come back during a rainy day.
I keep coming back to this place. The rice roll is so soft and yummy. The soy sauce is slightly sweet, I love it. The shrimp is slightly overcooked but still good. Add cilantro and scallions. The pork is also good. Im Chinese so naturally, I had to get the curry fish balls! While you are there, grab a Hong Kong style milk tea at Boba Guys. Its almost as if you are in HK!
I wanted to like this place because I fell in love with the location in Flushing but:1) The rice rolls (I ordered a beef one) didnt have the same silky smooth texture and fresh quality and taste as the one in Flushing.2) The cashier kept treating me rudely and combined it with condescending looks. Usually I wont take into account service much when it comes to good food but considering the quality isnt as good as the one in Flushing either, this bad experience was enough to make me not want to come back
They were very good. i only had a quick glance of the menu. i ordered the shrimp rolls. the cashier said, shrimp party? im like, ok? didnt realize til later that the shrimp party listed second on the menu ($9) was different than the another plain shrimp roll at the bottom half of the page ($7). the shrimp party came with bean sprouts and dried shrimp. i would have preferred to have plain shrimp rolls for $2 less.i heard about this place on eater. the owner said the prices were going to be the same, $6. so when I paid $9.80 i was a bit confused. i would go back for plain shrimp or the vegetarian ones which are $4.
Tried them for the first time today in the Canal Market.. Whats not to LOVE. Juicy, savory and fresh the rice roll melts in your mouth with yummy goodness. I got the signature rice roll and Iam glad that I did. Will make this a must do the next time Iam in the Big Apple
Har cheung fun are very good, almost excellent-- slightly translucent, the right texture... only flaw is that the shrimp are a tad too small and tend to fall out when you pick up a piece.Oh yeah, and its definitely hipster pricing. But does that surprise anyone stepping foot into Canal St. Market?
They say to sell pork, beef and shrimp rolls rice... there is no meat in there, and is like eating gum... nasty, I didn’t eat that and I asked for my money back, they told me that it wasn’t their problem, that they don’t care, but I stayed standing in there like 25 minutes untill they accept to refund me the 50%. Awfull service, really bad.I tried rice rolls before, with MEAT, nothing like this...
NEGATIVE 100000 stars. Ridiculously bad services! They dont accept card but still took all the cash I have left on me without giving me ANY food! Is this even illegal? So I just went there to give them free money? Such a thief. Never met any staff like this in my life. They also texted me and cursed me to go to hell. Omg, I really should be suing them for all of these.
Half of these comments are just full of bs. Melts in your mouth?? What is it cotton candy?? For the price they put it out for and the time taken to make some noodles this place is pure bs. Just because of ig and YouTube this place became hype for something that’s not even original
Ive never had a steamed rice roll, so I have nothing to compare this to, but I did really enjoy this meal.My husband and I got Joes Signature Rice Roll. The flavor was fantastic. I recommend adding the sauces to it.There are a couple of small tables to eat outside if you prefer that.Id come back again for one of these!
We ate the traditional of the house. But the stop is an ultra-thin rice noodle with an egg, all steamed. Then they fill it with a lot of delicious things like pork, chicken, parsley, fish; and it’s a warm stop, kind of gooey in a good way, super comfort food, excellent for the cold, and all for 9 dollars. You can even share
I love the rice they sell in this place is wonderful It is very delicious this place is my favorite is excellent everything is clean everything is closed the waiters treat you in a great way I really like coming to this place in the company of family friends I had the opportunity to go to the bathroom and the cleanliness that can be observed is fantastic

2022-06-11Thin and delicate rice rolls, quite tasty but I think most people would need 2 orders for a meal, which makes it pretty expensive… this spot is inside the Canal Street market which is apparently about 90% empty (I imagine because of Covid but not sure). We have the barbecue pork and the shrimp, a little difficult to compare to what you might find in a dim sum place because the portion is a little bigger and the quality is a little better but the price is also substantially higher.

2021-12-29This review is regarding the service I rec’d at the Canal Market location around 2pm on 12/27/21. The young lady that was at the register was unfriendly and made zero effort to offer any help in term of adding veggies or sauces options. I love their rice rolls and usually frequent the Flushing location. The service there is way better and they always make sure to offer all the extra options. When I picked my order, which I order 6 total, I asked for Peanut sauce and she reluctantly gave me 3. As much as I love their rice rolls, I’ll not come to this location again.

2022-03-05So glad i finally got to try this spot! i loved the simplicity of the menu and getting to see the chefs prepare the food right in front of me, i was already so excited for my food before it even got to me. i ordered the vegetable rice roll and my friends went with the pork, and they were both amazing! highly recommend grabbing some of the peanut sauce and chili oil in addition to the soy sauce, all three sauces were a great compliment to the noodles!

2021-12-28Amazing. Super thin fresh rolls made in 15 mins. One batch will satisfy you but get two batches to feel full for lunch. Would come back again for more!Got the Shrimp Roll ($7) with cilantro and scallions. To try others next time!No area to sit - maybe like 2-3 cocktail booths for you to stand and quickly eat. Its inside like a market area with 3 other restaurant booths. Theres no sign outside that says they are located there.

2022-05-27(5/3/22): Had the Joes Signature Special Rice Roll (3.0*) I didnt like this roll much at all; it tasted too fishy. I think the Chinese sausage and mixed vegetable rice roll at Sun Hing Lung is much better. Only downside there is its a literal hole in the wall, so no seating.

2022-08-03I ordered Joes Signature Rice Roll which is #1 on their menu. There isnt much too it. It had a nice presentation and some meat nibblets in it. It took a while, a long while to make. Pricing is on the high side as they are located in a new food court on Canal Street which appears to be a upcoming trend in the downtown area.

2022-03-22The rice roll is silky smooth and delicious. I had the regular prawn one and it came within minutes. The prawns are fresh and crispy. Definitely give it a try!

2022-03-12I ordered two vegetarian rice rolls and got more than I bargained for! I expected the portions to be small for $5/each so I was surprised when they handed me two plates. They were just as good as I expected them to be and Id get them again if I was at the Canal Street Market.

2022-07-30Little restaurant stall in the market. The noodles were super soft which i loved. We tried the special which had a mix of different filings so we could try them all. Unfortunately they did not hit the pallete right for us since we were so used to the conventional dimsum rice roll. We were not a fan of corn being used in the filling since it gave a strange unwanted texture.

2022-02-28The pork steamed rice roll was delicious and I received my order very fast. The seating area is nice. I recommend this place!
