I like my professors here but the career center was what ruined everything. They continue to tell me to come in for meetings to help for job placement, but no one helped me. I’m from jersey so every time I drive into school it costs me 35 bucks for a combination of toll, parking, gas and it doesn’t help me when the counselors do not show up to the appointments. That’s 35 down the drain and why is there no email saying hey I’m sick or a call because no one said anything. This happened like three times and there was no assistance or consistency which is one of the reasons I chose this school for my masters. There was even a time when my counselor didn’t show up to a meeting and I asked for assistance from someone else who told me “I only help people with financial aid” that makes no sense lol why would you not help someone who pays full price that’s like saying I won’t accept five dollars, only people who have one dollar. It was designed to be inconvenient to me because I don’t believe I just got unlucky over and over again. This place did not live up to my expectations nor did it get close. The stars are due once again to some of my very patient, understanding, and knowledgeable professors but it’s not their fault the school has terrible resources. Very disappointed and the fact that they asked me for a students donation was disappointing. Telling me 16% of their students experience homelessness. Maybe because they don’t help with jobs?
Awesome environment and hard working people. Ive read a lot of the negative reviews and its from people that think that college is supposed to just hand out As and do the work for you. John Jay is earning its title by becoming a higher level of education with more prestigious colleges and in order to get there it obviously cant hand out As. College is what you make of it.
Im a recent graduate & I must say this school was wonderful. I took mostly online classes that accommodated my schedule and it worked out perfectly. The staff are willing to help and not lazy at all (well from my experience). The learning experience was well worth it and professors expect you to work hard for your grades so thats whats important.
I love John Jay College! Any college experience is what you make it. If you look for opportunities you will find it at John Jay College because the resources are plentiful; it’s all about how actively you pursue these opportunities, along with skillfully trying to achieve them. Staff are generally easy to seek help from, and usually are down to earth. My only complaints would be there needs to be less adjunct professors and less of a commuter feeling. The commuter feeling of John Jay is inevitable, however, because it doesn’t provide dorms besides the New Yorker, which is overpriced and not near campus. If these two things were fixed the college is golden. I would say John Jay has to be one of the best CUNY schools offered because of the many resources and high-quality education.
I was very pleased with all the online classes. Wish that I have made this school my first choice rather than being a transfer student. Keep organized, ask questions, make sure that you are taking the correct classes for your major by looking on the JJ website, and you will be on your road to your degree. The only thing you carry is your own name- do not let bad seeds destroy your time here.
I really had a great experience going to John Jay College, for the most part my professors were amazing and towards my last year when the new building was built it felt like a place I wanted to be at more because of the new sleek design. CUNY in general unfortunately screwed me over with the change when it switched to CUNYFirst. They had made the changes to dropping classes which lead to me owing money and I stopped attending.
Dont bother. The only reason Im still here is because Im one class away from graduation. The professors are well known in their fields, but thats about all the school has going for them. I have so many things to say about this school, but I dont want to make this a very long review. To shorten things up, youre failing as a school if youve been reported to federal officials.
Good school, but don’t expect the professors or anyone to hold your hand until your graduate, is up to you if you want to succeed in this school they provide you with what you need to be a successful alumni once you graduate, but if you not willing to put the work in then stay at McDonalds flipping burgers!
It’s my first year here @ JJ, and it’s so far been a great experience. The staff are helpful and patient, the professors are good teachers, and use humor to make the lectures fun. There’s a lot of places to hang out here on your free time and the school overall is big and beautiful.
I am an undergraduate freshman attending college here at John Jay university and I couldnt be more grateful. John Jay sets itself apart from other universities because of its unique diverse group of students striving for the same goal; academic success. I highly recommend hard working students who have a knack for law enforcement to attend this prestigious school. It is ranked number 1 in its forensic psychology program along with being the number 1 criminal justice school in the world. Go bloodhound!
I really did like this college when I was attending it, but they really have to do better with who they hire as professors or instructors (TAs) because there were several times where I took a course & I was basically teaching myself or I wasnt learning what the actual course was suppose to be about. I had professors who would teach stuff that had nothing to do with what the course should have been about or they werent teaching much at all. But, instead talk about their personal life experiences.
This is the worst college to attend. As a former student I advise you to choose a different school. Most of their representatives or agents are very rude and they treat students like garbage. Instructors are mean and they love spoiling students GPA. These people do not know the word professionalism.
John Jay is a great College and I have never had a bad experience with any professors. All these negative comments about John Jay are all from lazy students who do not know what they want out of life. John Jay facility and staffs provide all the necessary resources for students florist and graduate with a degree.
I currently attend John jay college and I must say it is an amazing and educating experience. In addition, the work is insane and overwhelming because it consists of writing lots of essays. However, the more essays one writes, the better their writing improves slowly as the years go by. I learned that the hard way because the transformation to high school is very tough and the work in college can help prepare one for the future such as receiving their masters and PHD. The only problem John Jay has is the service provided for the students because they make students handle important jobs that should be handled by adults who received a higher level of education.
The John Jay College of Criminal Justice has locations in six buildings in its Hells Kitchen campus: the new building, Haaren Hall, the North Building, the Westport building, the BMW building, and the 54th street building. The neighborhood is the north part of Hells Kitchen, just south of Lincoln Center (or the old San Juan Hill) and west of Columbus Circle.Haaren Hall is the old DeWitt Clinton high school and Haaren high school building that John Jay took over in the late 1980s. It houses the library and the athletic facilities. The new building, opened in 2011, is adjacent to Haaren Hall, and has many state of the art features. It is a vertical campus containing the Shiva Art Gallery, the Lynch theatre, Memorial Hall, and other amenities that unite the campus and make it an attractive place to attend college.Dont forget to say hello to John Jay (well, a statue of him) when you walk into the Kroll Atrium of the New Building. These two buildings, Haaren Hall and the new bldg, have the places that visitors are most likely to attend on campus.
I am a 1989 alumni of this college. This school was great back in the day...great professors and the curriculum was hard. Obviously I cant speak for how it is today as I have not been back there in a long time but if you want to pursue a career in the criminal justice field Id say this is the school to go to.
I heard so many good things about this school which is why after reviewing other colleges prior to me wanting to come back after years being out of school, John Jay seemed like the answer. Currently I wish I would have stayed far away from this place. I am not working, I have no income and I applied for financial aid which screwed me over because I got so little due to TAP thinking my parents should be fit to cover the cost which is DEAD WRONG. John Jay gives no help. I can’t get work study, emergency funds, anything. I am struggling to even get to classes because of no money to get there. I’ve been to counseling sessions and several trips to Jay Express and it’s still the same run around. This school is a joke. They only cater to a certain group and it is so obvious. I’m sick to my stomach. I’m not working and all I asked was for some assistance and I have been denied. Safe yourself the trouble and don’t come here. I am trying my hardest to get out and that will also cost me. I am truly disgusted.
I was at John Jay for one semester and applied to transfer after the 1st month of classes. The atmosphere is like a big high school with the word college at the end of it. The only good thing I could say about the school is they have plenty of internship opportunities, but thats it! Quote from one of my professors while at John Jay, College students have to work for their As, except John Jay students, all you guys have to do is show up and you get As, my reaction was, wtf?; One of the students had an argument with the professor after, saying he was rude and she felt offended. Now being at St Johns University, I can relate with the professor.
The cool thing about John Jay is that it keeps getting better as time goes on. I really appreciate that the college is expanding its horizons and I am a proud alumna! Particularly great is that you can get a great education while learning through an interdisciplinary lens. The approach of the college is to take everything into focus of how it affects criminal justice; for instance, economics via the lens of criminal justice, english, etc. Go John Jay!
When I came to John jay college, I realize this was the college well known for Criminal justice. I always had a desire to become a lawyer and this college would give me the opportunity to do so. The majority of students in John Jay are majoring in criminal justice. This is beneficial because many of my peers are able to help each other because they are taking the same requirements. In addition, the teachers in John Jay are extremely helpful and always their to help you through your struggles.
The premiere Criminal Justice School in America and maybe the world. Yes, I have a bias opinion because I am an alumni and an Adjunct Professor there since 2006. However, no where, will you be able to find a more talented group of professors that not only can teach from the practical side of the Criminal Justice System, but from the academic side as well. It is a beautiful marriage of practicality and academia that anyone thinking of a degree or a career in Criminal Justice, should put John Jay College of Criminal Justice at the top of their list.
John Jay College has to be by far one of the nicest campuses in Manhattan! Between the view you get on the 8th floor and the Jay Walk itself, its a must to stop by. A great bonus about this college are all the celebrities you get to meet on campus that shoot for numerous movies, commercials, and TV shows. Its a great experience and an even greater University if you have an interest in entering the Criminal Justice field!
Phenomenal faculty on par with the nations finest institutions. Why anyone would drown themselves in debt when such CUNY schools exist is beyond me...but perhaps those who do belong in school more than anyone else. My experience with John Jay and its infinite opportunities and resources has been wonderful and I am more than thankful.
BEST in Criminal JusticeMy son is now a 2d Gen student attending JJC , as Officer in training for NYC Corrections Officer. He is now 2 months into the 5 month training. He is training at the same gun range NYPD utilizes. I could not be PROUDER of him. He graduated SCCC with 3.5 GPA last May/ 2017. It took most of last year from application through forensic and agility testing ( It is a Grueling process) to final acceptance. His group is #900 strong and expected to graduate the Academy in May 2018. You are all successful achievers. Congrats upon your Entry in to the Academy !!I attended JJCCJ when there was Free Tuition 1974-77; I was Freshman & Sophmore Rep; wrote for Lex the school paper; John Jays then President, Gerald Lynch announced they were downsizing the College to focus solely on CJ. I left & went downtown to Baruch ; was on Deans List first semester to graduation 1980. I received quite different types of education at both schools, I was a Liberal Arts Major, JJC was moving forward to focus solely on the Sciences. Since the 70s, JJC has been an outstanding College in Forensic and Police Science & Studies. Many of my friends went on to become lawyers, and one a NYPD Detective Sargeant. My Lex Editor, Joe Ferdenzi, went on to become a NY Asst District Atty, two female friends went on to the FBI & Homeland Security. On a current note: Im Glad they benched Isaacson: He has no place teaching Future Cops and Corrections Officers . Very Unprofessional remarks and should be subject to Psychological / Forensic review before allowed to teach ANYwhere - if EVER again.
This is the WORST college in all of NY. I went here for a semester and paud my tuition by loan. John Jay refused to accept it even though it was processed and sent through 3 weeks before the due date. They rejected my loan for no reason. Now, almost 4 years later they finally sent a bill with an additional $690 fee for their delay. In the 4 years, they put holds and blocks on my CUNY accounts and refused to send me any bills. I reached out to them multiple times 3 years ago and they never responded to me and they never sent any bills. John Jay is the worst! Their classes are a waste of time and the people who work in the bursars and other financial departments clearly have no common sense. Dont go to this awful college unless you want to get robbed.
Coming here after receiving a BS at Purdue University and an MS at GWU, perhaps my educational standard was set high. I came here to get an MA/PhD in Forensic Psychology, and, having been a police officer for nearly a decade before my arrival, I was anticipating, as one person reviewed, the premiere Criminal Justice college in the US. Unfortunately, those days, if they ever existed, are long gone. I am approaching my last semester at the school, and can say without qualms, that this school functions less well than most inner city elementary schools. The atmosphere is, as another reviewer said, one of a high school; students sit on each others laps in the hallways and make-out, scream and dance through the hallways as if the school was hosting Fame.Academically speaking, you are getting a subpar education by top notch professors. I do not believe that I was once ever made to write a paper over 12 pages in my program. It is much much worse for undergrads, as they are rarely asked to write over a 4-6 page double spaced paper. One faculty member told me that she has to struggle to get her undergrad students to be even considered for law schools because John Jay kids cant write. Most of the educational experience is now online, through the use of Blackboard; however, very rarely will you have a professor that 1) knows how to use it properly, or 2) actually responds to emails. Forget about any academic advisement; Ive been trying to contact the externship coordinator for 18 months and all my emails have gone unreturned. Professors, who demand that your email inbox be available to them and that you respond in a timely fashion, do not reciprocate this courtesy. Office hours are not conducive to full-time employed students, despite the school boasting that they have convenient schedules for those career-minded/adult students.Administratively, you may as well try to talk to a brick wall to have your concerns heard. My first year, I had a professor arrive 1.5 hours late for a final which was supposed to take 2 hours. She did not give us the additional time to complete the exam. At the 45 minute late mark, I emailed the Dean of Students, explaining that she had failed to arrive; I followed up with an email after the exam to explain her actions. Its been 3 years, Im still waiting for the response. This is quite typical of the adjunct faculty at the school/the administrations response. As for actual faculty, it is amazing that the buildings are big enough to fit all their egos. I once had a professor, who is very well known in the forensic psychology field, tell my class that we would never be able to do what he does for a living, so we may as well just quit now. He also announced that he never gives A to any student. I received As on my midterm, final, and final paper; he gave me a B+ as a final grade. An appeal to the Dean of Students went unanswered.Yes, the new building is beautiful, but it came with a hefty price. One that the College now feels necessary to pay through the use of the building for film shoots. Good luck trying to get to class on time when SVU, Elementary, The Following, and Geico are filming in the building at the same time.If you absolutely have to go to college, then by all means, come to John Jay. For in-state tuition, its not too shabby. If youre looking for a great Criminal Justice/Justice-focused education, go elsewhere. Thankfully, the reputation of JJ is still high enough that having it on resume still means something in certain circles. It is only a matter of time before that changes, I am sure.
Avoid the John Jay online programs and anything online or telephone if possible no one knows jack in their departments when you ask them simple questions. I live far away from John Jay but I wanted a masters degree and decided to apply to the MPA online program which interests me greatly and I am still interested in the field. Throughout my first semester, it had been a run around with financial aid and the loan manager not giving clear and accurate advice. I didnt receive any information about my loan until more than half way into the semester. Worst college, never again Ill come to this CUNY school.
I was so excited when I was accepted into this school but it was all downhill from there. A close family member of mine had cancer so at the very end of the semester, my I couldnt focus and my grades suffered. No one was understanding about what I was going through and I failed every class. Also, at some point because of what I was going through, I reached out to a therapist at the school. She flat out told me that she thought I was lying! I shouldve reported her but was too busy dealing with the fact someone close to me was going to die. There were also some very ignorant students I came across who said racist comments. Ill never go back here.
Worse school ever!I always dreamt of going to John jay and after receiving my associates degree at another school I decided to transfer to John jay for my bachelors. WORST IDEA EVER!! STAFF IS HORRIBLE! THEY DONT HELP YOU AT ALL!!! THERE IS NEVER ANYTHING THEY CAN DO FOR YOU !! they make you take pointless classes that you dont need and have nothing to do with your major making you take more semester and helping them make more money out of you ! Seriously contemplating going back to my old school where Im sure Ill finish much faster !
This school is appallingI attended a focus group, and the whole school gives a very negative vib...The -professor who conducted the group, could not keep his eyes off my chest..What a loser, so unprofessional.Students sleep on sofas in public areas, the security officer kept me waiting, while she kept gossiping with a co worker for several minutes. This whole school is a public works project,Supported by tax payers, for losers who cant do anything else, in life.& to have a professor teach a course on teaching dead cops is not only vile, but a disgrace to John Jay, one of the founding fathers and the first A.A.Dispecable!!
I could not give less than one star thus you see one star in this review. this place does not even deserve one. Nothing I write here can truly express how disappointed I am with this school. I am a student here for a certificate program, so if you ask me I would recommend put all your money in a bag and put it to fire than spend it on John Jay. You will not be provided with anything that you cannot find on the internet already. If self learning was the only way I had to get through, I wish I hadnt spent a penny here.
John Jay Financial Aid Dept is very unprofessional. Talking to those folks is like talking to robots. They are not knowledgeable or helpful. If a financial Aid office is not knowledgeable, they can end up costing students thousands of dollars in unnecessary cost. Maybe thats their goal. Wish I could rethink this school buts its too late.
After receiving my associates degree in computer information systems I decided to apply to John jay to get my BS in forensics and cybersecurity. I went during the time for direct admissions where you can personally go to the school and apply. It has been a run around from the start, which I feel is very unnecessary. On the first day I went I brought my high school transcript and my college transcript from the school I graduated from and was told to come back with the transcript for a school I went to for a semester before my graduating school. Which was understandable but when I brought that transcript I was told they cant do anything because the person that started processing me was not there. Which I thought was foolishness because there should be someone there to handle that persons work in case she cant make it for a while. But I said no problem and ask for the card to call the processor tomorrow when she comes in and I was assured that my transcript will be put in her mailbox. Tomorrow came and I called the processor, she did not know about the situation and I had to wait until the person I gave my transcript to came back from lunch, after 30 minutes I called back again and was told that the person who I had given my transcript to had said she never got my transcript. I was alittle irritated but I explained that I went in there personally yesterday and gave it to her in her hand. After waiting another 20 minutes she comes back on the the phone and says oh yes we have it here. Then goes on to tell me that I have to still fill out an application and I need to come in. I dont live in the city and for me to come I have to drive and pay for toll and parking and this is just inconvenient for me. Why was I not told when I went in there several times to fill out this form so when my transcript came everything will be completed. Very very disappointed and Im not sure I would like to go to this school anymore because of its disorganization and how unprofessional it is.
I earned my Masters of Public Administration from John Jay College of Criminal Justice. The professors are highly recognized in the field. Its not uncommon to see JJC graduates sought after from the nations foremost law enforcement agencies and the military too. Im speaking from personal experience. In this economy an avid student must consider degree options, affordability, college ranking, and graduation rate. JJC has much to offer. I chose the Masters Degree from John Jay College, which offers an array of academic programs both distance learning and class-based at an affordable cost with the highest national/international college rankings. I completed the class-based program within the established time frame and felt that the academic offerings prepared me for leadership. I made life-long friendships with other productive members of society. I know students who liked the distance learning options as well (e.g. MPA: Inspector General Track). The programs are regionally and nationally accredited. In my opinion, you have everything to gain with a degree from JJC. Shortly after I acquired my MPA from JJC I promoted to a supervisory position. Thank God for John Jay College of Criminal Justice!
I have been going to this school for some time now im a stright A student . but the reason why im giving a 1 star because the person who deals with privite loans is bad i have a loan thats just sitting there and i have been calling for 3 months stright to the person that deals with these type of students loan and i havent hered form her not yet . i had a hold on my classes i had to try to find $4,000 to give to the school . Thats the reason why i took out a loan( right) . im very upset with this school it should be fix . i went to kingsbroguh and they got my loan asap and took care of the problem right away . by the way i had to pay john jay to outta to get my associate degree form kingsbrough. now im trying to apply for winter class and im seeing more money added i have been a full time student now its looking like i have to be a part-time.
An excellent college with a great administrative staff and caring professors; with a burgeoning infrastructure to support the liberal arts. Albeit recent construction is annoying, the new building looks fantastic and really gives the college the campus feel that it had been missing.
I would give the school an excellent grade if it was based on the professors and the environment, however its a bunch of morons running this college. if you ever need help from any department youll find out the hard way that these people are incompetent fools who have no idea what theyre doing (there are exceptions of course). do yourself a favor and go to a school with a dorm experience cause thats where the REAL college experience is.
Attended Jay during its infancy. Started in office building on 24TH street (somewhat around the corner from Barucak, [sic] CUNY). Loved it, to say the least. I was the first female of the Student Council. Obtained 2 degrees from Jay then went across the street to Fordham University and received last degree.least.
I love John Jay college of criminal justice its amazing experience to go there an discover see how others feel about criminal justice talk about issues that we face in Society today also how can we change as feature lawyers an police officers an young leaders!!! 💕💕💕👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾✨✨🎉🎉💼💼👔👔😎😎😎✊🏾✊🏾✊🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾📝📝📝📚📚⚖️⚖️⚖️
Really disappointed by the lack of response by the school in an attempt to get a copy of my Associates Degree. I’ve been e-mailing with Sergio Villavicencio and Melissa Dolan who have been very unprofessional. I called ahead and paid via check to receive a copy of my degree. Sergio claims I now needed to pass a placement exam (which I already passed) to get my degree, and that they no longer do an Associates Degree so I can’t attain it anyway. They cashed my check and told me to go away. He now ignores my e-mails in which I’m trying to get my transcript. I would like to join the Police force, they are not being helpful at all.
(Translated by Google) This is what you make of it, but it is amazing for disciplines related to criminal justice, professors with extensive experience and long experience in this field.(Original text)It’s what you make of it but amazing for criminal justice related majors very knowledgeable professors with lengthly experience in the field.

2021-11-15Very nice school. I’m currently enrolled here as a first year and it has been a blast going to class. The school is huge and everything is so beautiful and the architecture is so interesting. The dining hall serves really good food and the school is so clean. The classrooms are so big and all the professor are so nice and helpful. The lounge is wonderful and there are plenty of places for you to stay as you wait for your next class.

2022-04-20Great concert hall experience, if you are a presenter, think about this hall. Nice sized pit, lighting was clean and many choices, wings are large, etc. Pro stage and support box office to stage.

2020-09-29Amazing architecture and stylish building! But more importantly, the programs here are great, the academic advisors here are amazing. They are always busy and making appointments with them is a pain in the butt but once you do, they are super helpful and make you feel so comfortable about that courses you are taking and your path to graduation. I do recommend!

2021-01-30Graduated from John Jay College in 2019, returned because of convenience. Sadly it was a terrible idea returning. Things got worst. The school needs new staff and also should stop pushing its self as a veteran friendly school. It is not a veteran friendly school.
