As a wedding planner, I love recommending John to my couples! We have worked on many events and projects together and he always delivers excellence. He is a talented photographer and works to build a genuine relationship with all of his clients. He has a postive attitude, even through the most challenging events. Not only will John capture beautiful photos, but he will also deliver professionalism with a side of fun!
I cant say enough about how great it was working with John Schlia Photography. At the time we began wedding planning, my wife and I were in the midst of buying a house and working on our respective dissertations, so we had a lot going on, but John was always super responsive, organized, and willing to accommodate our crazy schedules!He often did little things -- like getting us a Javas gift card and encouraging us to use it to relax and take a break from wedding planning -- to show that he appreciated all that we were dealing with...and that he was there to support us however he could.As for the photography itself, John shot both of our engagement sessions as well as our ceremony and reception (which was at Artisanworks). His photography truly captured every aspect of our day and we could not be happier to select John for such an important occasion. Highly recommend!
John Schlia really is the most outstanding photographer I have ever worked with. When I first met him I instantly felt comfortable and was able to ask any questions I had. John was able to answer all my questions and concerns and helped me pick the package that I needed for my wedding.For our wedding package, John offered a free engagement shoot. Even though my husband and I do not live in Rochester, John worked on our schedule during our Christmas visit in December to make sure we received our engagement photo shoot. He even went to the zoo with us in freezing cold snowy conditions so we could get the pictures we wanted. The results are fabulous! After our engagement session I knew there would be no problems with the wedding pictures.At the wedding we were surprised by a heavy downpour all day. This didnt stop John from being able to get amazing shots! We took some extra time in the church, took a few shots with umbrellas out side, and then grabbed some amazing shots inside our hotel before the reception. During the reception, John was able to capture many candid photos of our family and friends. I love having all the candid shots so I can really remember how everyone felt during the ceremony and the reception.Being a bride is stressful enough without having to worry if you are going to get all the exact shots you want. With John, I didnt have to worry about this at all! I knew I would get all the pictures I wanted and even more! The photos came out beautiful. I ordered many pictures as gifts for my parents and God mother, and am planning on ordering more in the future! If youre looking for a photographer who is relaxed, listens to your concerns, gets to know you on a personal level, and truly makes your day fun and enjoyable, look no further than John Schlia!!

John was great! Always capturing moments and not getting in the way. He was good at being where he needed to be and yet not being visible, like a distraction.Also, he made everything really easy for us! He even came early to fetch me and my new husband early morning! And got us arranged in such a way so that we saw each other at the right moment. And gave clear directions and always was available to take even more pictures when needed.He made us feel well at ease! John was a great photographer for our special day!

My family and I had a wonderful experience with John as our family portrait photographer. We have had portraits taken by others before but working with John was truly unique. He came to our house to take the photos, putting a personal spin on the portraits that worked out great. He got to know our house and found the perfect spaces for portraits and took different shots in several areas. He also helped us choose a spot in our home to arrange the portraits that we ended up ordering. We couldnt be happier and more satisfied with the end result!
John is an incredible professional who goes above and beyond to get all the best images of the day. His photos are always beautiful and his customer service is excellent! Whether for a corporate event or wedding/family photos John really delivers. Not to mention his pricing is very reasonable, especially for such high-quality images!
I first hired John as an event photographer for a gala. We had struggled to find a photographer who was capable of working in the low light of the event, and in John we finally found the one! He captured the flavor of the event with candids and lots of detail shots of auction items and centerpieces and was able to also get more posed shots of VIPs and other guests with a simple shot list and a quick point from organizers showing where they were. He was very independent and professional, as well as fun and engaging with the guests. He delivered quickly and easily and the photos were beautiful. We went on to hire him for other jobs, including environmental portraits of families who had struggled through illnesses, and he was so kind of lovely with them all, no matter the age. He had great ideas for how to honor the families as well as our organization through posing and location choice. Even since leaving that position, Ive gone on to hire him for professional portraits, which he did an amazing job with. Thank you, John!
John was fantastic. He worked with us to figure out exactly what we were interested in, met with us several times to get to know us as a couple and to learn about our wedding plans, and sent us a form with questions so that he would know exactly what sorts of pictures and what combinations of portraits we were hoping for. He came out to the wedding site (a farm) beforehand to scope out good places for pictures, and it was clear that he had a really artful eye and could see and imagine unique and beautiful photo opportunities. On the wedding day, he was wonderful. I really appreciated how natural he was--he didnt have us posing in unnatural or corny ways, but sought to capture who everyone really was, as well as to take some really artful photographs. The photos that he took were beautiful; we are thrilled with them. I had actually known John since high school, so I knew that he was a great person--but he was also a wonderful wedding photographer!
We used John for company head shots for my agency. We needed really sharp professional photos that also showed personality. John delivered! He did a great job putting people at ease and getting a lot of options for each person to choose from. We love the output and would definitely use John again. I highly recommend him!
John is professional, thorough, creative, and considerate. His exposures are consistent, and his framing and focus are dead on (picky former photographer talking here). His technical prowess and creativity come together to capture your entire wedding experience in a way that tells a story; his personal touch ensures that the story he tells is about you, not just your wedding. John did a superb job with our entire wedding. We met John while he was photographing our best friends wedding on July 6th, 2012. As soon as we saw his photos we knew immediately that we could have no one else capture our special day! So, on July 6th 2013 (yes, we actually share our anniversary date with our best friends!) John caught all of our once-in-a-lifetime moments with ease and professionalism. We could not have asked for a better photographer who we now consider a friend!
If you want wedding photography that reflects YOUR style, and not just what the photographer thinks is best, then John is your guy. He listened to what my husband and I are passionate about (wine, food, and each other!) and took breathtaking photos that reflect US! His photo-journalistic style captured our little moments and made them big memories.We are a military family that is stationed across America, and John came up with a package that fits our crazy clan.But all this comes with a price, and John was upfront about how much it would cost, and we never encountered hidden fees. Even my cheap-scape husband appreciated the value of Johns expertise.I highly recommend John Schlia Photography, and if I had to do it again, I would choose him every time.
We live in Northern Virginia but our wedding was in Romulus, NY. Since were not familiar with any vendors in the Finger Lakes area, it was a little challenging finding/trusting people to pull off our winery wedding. Though I dont think this particular program is being offered anymore, we arranged our photography through Davids Bridal and they assigned us John Schlia. I consider ourselves very lucky to have had the opportunity to work someone as talented and professional as John. He took hundreds of amazing pictures of us for upwards of 8 hours. They were very lovely and people are still raving about them even though our wedding was 6 months ago. He got the pictures back to us very quickly and the quality was impeccable. Hes very patient and clever and works really hard for the shots he thinks will work well. I normally hate looking at pictures of myself, but you know its a good sign when you cant stop flipping through them. I wish we lived closer to him so he could document all our major moments. I would highly advise everyone to work with him if you have the opportunity. You will not be disappointed.
John and his assistant David photographed our outdoor wedding in Rochester. They were great with our guests, especially managing our huge families. They were receptive to our photo suggestions and they improvised when the lighting was tricky at our ceremony location. My wife and I definitely recommend them!
If I can give him infinity stars, John killed the photography session for the engagement session and the wedding session. Hes very laid back, patient and fun gentleman to be around with. He took fantastic pictures and cannot wait for the final results. Hell, he was deaf accessible too since I taught him the basics!!! Hes the man and would take him again in a heartbeat!!

John did an awesome headshot session for me in NYC. He has a great eye for capturing interesting and unique backgrounds, no matter what the surroundings are, and using them to make his subject look their best. In addition to being a skilled photographer, he is also just a fun and easy-going person to be around, which makes for a completely relaxing environment. Response to Owner: Thank you for your apology. Unfortunately, Im sorry doesnt give us lost memories. My review was not intended as a personal attack, that is why I gave numerous, honest, specific examples of your work/ethic.UPDATE: John was surprised and saddened by my incredibly negative review, and would like me to remove the post (now I understand why there are only positive reviews listed). He did offer to address my concerns, which I appreciate. However, I declined, as there is no way to go back in time for a re-do. All the photos he missed or captured poorly are forever gone (which *we* are extremely saddened by). As a Google Local Guide, I take pride in writing honest reviews. Therefore, I will not remove this post.We hired John, a professional photographer for my daughters wedding this past summer. We recently received our photos and we are extremely disappointed in them! There were numerous photos missing (e.g., traditional photos such as staged mirror shot with bride and mother, staged bride leaving house, limo - even though we had the limo for SIX hours, brides shoes, etc., as well as specific photos REQUESTED, such as bride & groom wearing rings (John flat out told the bride and groom No, because he doesnt like knuckles!, requested! grandmother/aunts/uncles family shots, etc.)!John rushed through all the formal shots, capturing only ONE photo of the bride, groom, and their immediate families. John did not take the time to arrange people in groups, especially large groups, so you can see everyones face fully (even though there was plenty of space) nor did he take the time to ensure peoples clothing was lying properly, especially the brides gown, veil, and/or jewelry. He rushed so much that the photo session ended an HOUR earlier than planned. The one photo he did take of the bride & grooms rings (again, not on their fingers, as requested) one of the brides rings was backwards. When taking the establishing shot of church, he did not wait for the florist to hang the second wreath on the door and get out of the shot. He never even took an establishing shot of the reception.His framing was extremely poor (in numerous photos, peoples feet were cut off but lots of ceiling space or quite a bit of empty space next to people, while parts of the people were cut off. This even occurred on photos where he had us STOP! in the midst of the wedding (i.e., church procession & announcements)). During lighting of the unity candle, he only captured the face of one mother (we know there was opportunity to capture both, as our videographer did so beautifully), same during the sign of peace. The only full-on face shot of the cake was AFTER it was cut.John appeared to be more interested in eating throughout the day than doing the one job he was hired to do (during pre-wedding photos beginning at noon, he asked for ziplock bags to pack some food for lunch), and he went MIA throughout our 2+ hour dinner (BTW he charges, very heavily I might add, by the hour and includes dinner, which he explained as he wolfs down dinner and continues taking photos while everyones eating, but we dont have any photos of our guests during dinner). After dinner, John focused solely on the dance floor; he did not capture any of our guests who stayed at their table(s) or by the bar or coffee bar to chat.When John sent the preview photos, he had my daughter and son-in-law select photos for their album. First of all, he did not send all of the photos, so they were unable to select photos they would have liked to have included. Secondly, when he sent the album for their approval, it was apparent he did not have a good eye for editing/layout/cropping. Thirdly, he tried to charge additional fees for editing of the album. Ultimately, John did not charge them, but only after they pointed out the contract did not state there were additional fees for editing.If you are contemplating hiring John to capture your special day, DONT DO IT! Save yourself thousands of dollars and hire an amateur for similar quality work.
I got some professional headshots done with John. He made me feel really comfortable and took a nice pace while photographing. We had fun! Im really happy with my new headshots: his editing was very nicely done. Also, ordering prints was really easy on his website.

Every girl dreams of her engagement & wedding. Most of this is probably based on our childhood experiences and exposures. Being a girl of Indian origin I grew up on Bollywood movies. For many Indian girls their engagement and wedding are their chances to be the Heroine of their very own Bollywood movie. I was no different. Unfortunately my Hero was in Rochester New York and I was in Los Angeles. With his schedule there was not much time for him to come to LA so I had to bring Bollywood to him. We did not have many pictures together so I really wanted to have a photoshoot that would make us feel like an Indian Prince and Princess. As I looked for photographers who were familiar with Bollywood-style photography I found that there was no one in Rochester and that I would have to find someone in another city or state to come in. I contacted several photographers in the area and told them what I was looking for and they just pointed me in the direction of their (in my opinion vanilla) portfolio. John Schlia, however, rose to the challenge. I presented him with pictures from the weddings and engagement of my Indian friends in California and told him what I was looking for. He captured exactly what I had hoped and in the end he gave me my Bollywood photo-shoot. Even my fiance (now husband) who doesnt really enjoy taking pictures got into and and had fun. I know there is a good sized Indian community in Rochester and sometimes it is difficult to trust this once in a life time photo-shoot to just anyone. I can attest to the fact the John has the eye to catch the right moment, the perfect glance, and the most glamorous poses. All my Indian friends were impressed and were sure that John has had experience working with South Asian photography. I can wholehearted recommend him to any bride-to-be as an excellent photographer. I would also like to add for those people of Indian origin who are considering importing someone from New York City or New Jersey check John out first. Had we gotten married in Rochester I would have asked him to do the photography for the wedding as well. Thank you John!
John took my professional headshots, and he was excellent. I really enjoyed my time working with him; he was professional, yet laid back and relaxed. He easy to reach as well. Would definitely recommend him!
I enjoyed working with John. I especially liked that he took the lead in directing the shots and offering suggestions on various poses. He had a clear vision of how the shots would turn out and it showed in the final results.

2019-01-01We hired John for our wedding on July 7, 2018 in Rochester, NY. We couldnt be more happy with his service! From the very first interaction, he was accommodating; none of the packages on his website were exactly what we wanted, but he was flexible and made us a custom package that was perfect for us and for a great price! Leading up to the wedding he kept in touch and made sure he knew the whole schedule and everything. On our wedding day, John just took the lead and made sure he got every shot we could want. We didnt have to worry about anything! e.g. when it was time for sunset pictures, he came and got us! He didnt miss a single moment!

2018-12-19We could not have asked for a better photographer to share our wedding day and party with! John is creative, collaborative, and a joy to work with all around. He made us and our guests feel at ease, which you can absolutely see in our pictures. He made sure to get to know me and my wife and checked in often to ensure we were all on the same page. We had a similarly wonderful experience taking family pictures with him, he picked out a beautiful location and made even the most awkward of our family members comfortable. 2018-12-23John photographed our wedding and we were completely delighted with the photos. Not only were the photos beautiful, John was so fun to work with. I never even noticed him at work during the ceremony, but then was completely delighted with beautiful ceremony shots and candids of all my friends and family. We had only booked him for a limited amount of time, but he used the time well and got excellent shots. We would highly recommend him as a photographer!

2017-02-06I met John in 2014 for a work event. I knew after seeing those photos and his personality, he had to be my wedding day photographer! Hes done family portraits, our engagement and wedding photos now and each time he takes the time to know exactly what we are looking for, he goes out of his way to make sure he knows the venues we want to take photos at, and works with us on the whole process. I never felt more comfortable with a photographer and never more confident in knowing he will get the pictures we want. I highly recommend John!

2012-07-19John was my wedding photographer. He was absolutely wonderful to work with. I have worked with a few photographers in the past for family photos and such, and John was the best. He did all the photos that we wanted and he presented us with other great poses. He was very patient with us and was willing to spend more time with us than was originally planned. He also traveled almost three hours to photograph for us. We are planning on using John as our photographer again in the future. I highly recommend him!

2013-11-15My husband and I are extremely satisfied with the way our wedding photographs turned out. They are absolutely beautiful and they will be a constant reminder as to what a wonderful wedding day we had. About a month or so before our wedding day, John contacted me asking about types of pictures I was interested in and what locations I had in mind. Up until the day of our wedding, John was very accessible and easy to talk to about any ideas I had. John is a very detail oriented photographer. Before taking 90% of our pictures, he always made sure the lighting was just right and there werent any shadows. He is an artistic photographer and always knew the perfect places to take each and every picture. Throughout our entire day, John was easy going, professional and passionate about what he does. John was able to capture every moment, including things me and my husband were unable to witness from interacting with guests. At the end of the night, I had so many guests telling me how great our photographer was and how professional and talented he was to be able to capture so many moments and engage with the guests. I couldnt have picked a more phenomenal photographer to be a part of our special day. I would HIGHLY recommend John Schlia to anyone wanting professional photographs taken to capture life changing experiences. You will not be disappointed. 2018-12-09My husband and I got married in August of 2018. John was such a pleasure to work with right from the start! He is extremely easy to work with and makes sure that every detail is perfect and just the way that you want it. Aside from just taking our wedding photos John was extremely helpful in providing us with information about other vendors – many of whom we used for our wedding because of his recommendations. Our family and friends have used John for many occasions including weddings and have never been disappointed. John is very approachable and extremely helpful in making sure that your needs and wants are met. Because we have worked with John in the past, using him for our wedding photography was a no-brainer! 2017-02-12My husband and I are really glad we went with John as our photographer for both engagement photos and our wedding. He is very professional and takes his art seriously, but is not afraid to have fun. He was even able to get some people who dont normally smile to look happy in the photos. He was willing to customize his photography packages for us and we are extremely satisfied with the photos.
